USB controller and hub weirdness, which driver handles which port

Q: USB controller and hub weirdness, which driver handles which port

I didn't know whether to put this in General, or Hardware, or Drivers, or what. But here goes.

This particular system has Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit, with an Abit KN9 Ultra motherboard. I was having some USB issues (a particular external USB drive wouldn't work when plugged into the front USB ports) so I started some investigating.

I thought that the built-in USB ports on a motherboard (on the back of the computer) are connected to a particular USB hub which is handled by a specific USB driver. But that doesn't appear to be true!

This is strange: When my Microsoft optical mouse is plugged into a particular port on the back of the computer, Device Manager says this when viewed by connection:
Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
USB Root Hub
Microsoft Hardware USB Mouse
Microsoft USB Comfort Optical Mouse 1000
(Those are indented to indicate "child" devices)

That would indicate that this particular USB port is a low-speed USB port, which worried me. BUT, if I unplug the mouse, and plug the printer in to the port that the mouse was connected to, I see this in Device Manager:
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Controller
USB Composite Device
Canon MF4320-4350
(Those are indented too)

...which means that the SAME physical USB port is now a USB 2.0 port (Enhanced).

How can the same USB port be driven by Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller driver one minute, and Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller the next minute? If that's how things are done these days, that's fine, but I never knew this. And the behavior was clouding my investigations -- I was convinced that the USB headers on the motherboard were not USB 2.0 (even though the documentation says they are, and Windows never complains that devices "could" perform faster if plugged into a high-speed port, etc.).

I thought that a physical USB port was connected to an on-motherboard set of circuitry that is handled by ONE driver, but apparently Windows moves drivers around when it wants to. Is this commonly known? Am I crazy? Does this happen to other people?

Thanks.

David

Preferred Solution: USB controller and hub weirdness, which driver handles which port

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: USB controller and hub weirdness, which driver handles which port

I would say, if the device is not USB 2 capable it uses the Standard driver and if it is USB 2 it uses the Enhanced driver. My HP DVD-RW USB drive shows up under Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller but my Logitech keyboard and mouse show up under Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller.

Hello, I am trying to get my Texas Instruments DSK6711 DSP board communicating with my Windows 7 64-bit DELL Inspiron 15R laptop. The DSP board has a DB25 IEEE-1284 compliant parallel port ad my laptop has a USB port. I bought a USB to DB25 Parallel
Port Adaptor cable to connect the DSP board to my laptop. Windows installs the USB Printer Support driver automatically but the DSP utility fails when invoked to check the connectivity. The DSP board documentation suggests I change the parallel port mode
to ECP or EPP but I have no idea how to do that. I am also using Code Composer Studio V2.1 to send exedcutable code to the DSP board which is expecting an LPT printer port to be available but there is only a USB port with the adaptor cable plugged in. Can
anyone suggest what I can do to get this cable working with my laptop and DSP board?
Thanks

A:Configuring Windows 7 IEEE-1284 Controller Driver for USB to Parallel Port Adaptor Cable

I can only suggest visiting the manufacturer's support for the adapter for details on configuring the port. Most of the usb to parallel adapters I have looked at were designed for printers and thus lack any ability for port management.
A more direct adapter that may create a managable port would a PCMCIA or Express port card bus adapter card.

I'm working on a small application that requires direct access to a printer port, under XP.
I understand that hardware access requires a driver, and I have a good dll available, which gives both port I/O and memory access functions. (Hwinterface32.dll)
I can readily use it to read and write via LPT1, initially using 0378h as the base address.
In order to make the code portable, I wanted to read the port address table in BIOS memory.
A dump of 0:400 through 40f with debug shows four COM ports and three LPT ports configured in the system, with LPT1 at 03BC and LPT2 at 0378.
However, if I read what's supposed to be the same memory using my code, I see only COM1 and LPT1, with the other ports zeroed out. AND, LPT1 shows as 0378, not 03BC. (And 0378 does work correctly.)
I assume this is an artifact of running in user mode, but can someone explain the discrepancies?

Thanks!

Dave

I open up internet explorer when starting up or restarting but the wireless doesn't catch up with it so you get a no connection and then you have to refresh after about 5 seconds. Here are what are listed on my device manager but I'm not sure which of these handle this and what driver I could update or switch

Atheros AR8151 PCI Gigabit Ethernet Controller NDIS 6.20
Intel Centrino Advanced N6205

Here are my options from Acer:
Wireless LAN Atheros Wireless LAN Driver 9.0.0.202
Wireless LAN Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver 5.100.235.19
Wireless LAN Intel Wireless LAN Driver 14.0.1.2
Wireless LAN Realtek Wireless LAN Driver 1005.12.0105.2011

A:Wireless isn't loading as fast. Which driver handles it?

On most laptops. It does take 5 seconds or so for the Wireless to connect and authenticate to your Wireless Router using what ever security you have set.

To see which Wireless Card you have, Click on Start, in the search box, type Device Manger. Click to open it.
under network adaptors, click the expantion arrow. It should tell you if it's Atheros, Or Broadcom, etc etc.

Then check the website for a new driver.

Last night I installed XP Pro SP2 on my laptop, it has an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 in it. So I boot up XP, and im stuck in vga mode, but my card isn't even using the "Standard VGA Display" driver, instead its using VgaSave mode. Due to this I cant install my driver because it cant find a previous driver to remove, or something like that. But anyway I found a fix to convert the normal drivers to mobility ones, http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/, which worked wonders, it installed, I rebooted, it got to the desktop and the screen flashed black as though it was loading the driver. It worked. So after a bit of playing Second Life I decided to shut down the laptop. So this morning I boot it up, and it gets to the desktop, but the screen didn't flash black, and the driver didn't seem to be loaded, it felt like I was back in VgaSave mode (move windows and they lag really badly), so I thought I better check the hardware list and see what driver my card is using, sure enough its using the ATI driver. So now im confused >.<

Can anyone help me get out of this VGA mode and back to accelerated goodness?

Thanks in Advance :)

My granddads computer was infected up the kaboose with trojans, viruses and stuff from not having SP 1 or 2 on it.

I've put on Avast Anti-Virus, Zone Alarm, Ad-Aware, Hijack This, SP2, ran all the updates and everything else I could think of to clean down the system and it seemed to do the trick.

Then I noticed the GFX card (Nvidia 5700) and Sound card (Soundblaster Live) werent installed correctly so I downloaded the latest drivers for each.

When I install the GFX drivers the card works but when I restart the machine its like the drivers were never installed. I go into computer management the device list says "This device cannot start".

When I install the Sound drivers it makes me restart for the drivers to take effect but when I restart I get "This device cannot start" again.

I'm hesitant to do a reinstall cause not having a burner i cant back stuff up, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been getting frequent "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" errors, and even the occasional BSOD, with by HP 2311x Monitor, so I decided to see if I needed a display driver update. On HP's site I downloaded the driver "Version 3.00 REV. A (9 Jan 2013)" (Filename: sp60378.exe) and ran it. I went through the installation process and everything seemed to go fine, and I rebooted. It didn't seem to help. So I looked at the driver properties for the monitor in Devices and Printers, and it says Driver Provider HP, Driver Date 8/16/2010, and Driver Version 1.0.0.0. Any idea why this would be?

Hello guys, I've been having a lot of issues with my AMD drivers, specially when it comes to chipset and video drivers. I recently had to downgrade my video drivers to June 2015 release date, that was the only solution found so I could run games properly (with recent drivers, games that should run with 100fps+ were running with 15fps)..

But that is not the point of this thread, instead, I'm here because after a few weeks running this drivers, I noticed my WiFi was not connecting to my router (wich is working, I can get access with other computers/cel phones). In my drivers list, the Ethernet controller and SM Bus controller are flagged as not installed.
I've tried to find these drivers, but AMD seems to only release packages of drivers. I've come to this download page:
Chipset

where I should be getting the drivers that solve my problem, but the big issue is: apparently, by doing it, i will be reinstalling the latest video drivers (for the APU), and that is ABSOLUTELY NOT what i want.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem? And I mean: where can I get the sm bus and ethernet controller driver w/o having to install a bunch of unnecessary drivers?

My notebook is a MSI 60X 3BE
video card: Radeon HD 8970M
chipset: AMD A10-5750M (with Radeon HD 8650G)
motherboard: MSI MS-16FK

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I've downloaded the drivers in the link, installed and SM Bus is running properly, but Ethernet doesn't. Any further help?

I'm thinking of getting a P70, I see it has 4 USB 3 ports and 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports.  My questions are: 1: Is each of the USB 3 ports connected to their own controller so that each port is capable of it's maximum bandwidth?  Or are all four ports connected to the same controller so that the data bandwidth is divided among the four ports? 2: Similar Thunderbolt 3 port question.  Is each of the two Thunderbolt 3 ports connected to it's own controller?  Or is the bandwidth shared between the two ports? I'm planning on using the USB 3 ports (maybe Thunderbolt 3 also) with a high end, high data rate USB 3 camera that, according to the specs, can use up 95% of the USB 3 bandwidth.  If I were to use two cameras at the same time, it would not work if all four ports are connected to the same controller/bus and sharing the bandwidth.  I have read that laptops usually share all USB ports on the same controller.  I'm hopeing it will be different with the P70, being a "professional" workstation class product. Thanks

I've come to the conclusion that my current controller card has gone south, thus I'm looking for a replacement. It is simple to compare cards in terms of their basic specs, but even with cards of the same specs, the prices vary widely.

Often, the higher priced cards seem to emphasize their performance, but this is something that I don't know how to evaluate. How does one choose a card for the best combination of quality and performance, without wasting money on a brand name?

Seekermeister, i have been considering one too. What I do is go to a place like Newegg and read all the reviews. It depends on what you want to do with it. I just need 2 or 3 extra ports. I don't care about raid. I've seen some that have low reviews, because they can't get top performance from raid, but if used as a single drives they work well. For me, that's all I care about. It seems if you want to run raid, a good card will cost some extra money.

I am not experiencing any problems. I am just trying to figure out how things work. I am exploring the relationships of the Host Controller, Root Hub, and USB Ports. Any helpful insight would be appreciated.

This computer has four USB ports. I plugged the following devices into the USB ports:
Logitech Unifying device for wireless mouse/keyboard combo
Logitech dongle for wireless headset
external hard drive
another external hard drive
Then I explored Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers in all of the following categories (two instances of each):
Generic USB Hub
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
USB Composite Device
USB Root Hub
The properties revealed seven (7) distinctly different port#/hub# combinations. With the four devices plugged into the USB ports, these four devices were self explanatory.

Another device was identified as my finger print reader. (which I have disabled) I am trying to figure out if the finger print reader is hard wired to either the Root Hub or the Host Controller, or if it is a virtual connection made through the registry.

The remaining two connections remain a mystery to me. I may not have known how to access the information to identify them. I do, however, have a virtual machine installed. The VM was not running at the time when I explored Device Manager. I also have a built in web cam which I did not load drivers for when I performed a clean install. Is it probable that these two d... A:understanding USB port, USB hub, Host controller architecture

It's normal for a laptop to have more USB port controllers than actual ports.

That fingerprint reader is soldered to an USB "port", and the webcams are usually soldered to an USB "port" as well. It's like they were USB devices connected to an USB port, just that the "port" they use is not soldered to the female USB plug, but directly soldered to the cable leading to that device.

Quite a few times laptops don't use all the USB ports they could, as the controllers and stuff to make the port work are physically located on the board's chipset (the component responsible of operating all ports on a motherboard, although more modern processors contain RAM and PCIe 3.0 controllers in them), and the chipset is made to fit models in all price ranges to be mass-produced in huge numbers to cut costs.
Which is why for most devices that don't need a particularly big bandwith they prefer to use USB controllers, instead of wasting much more valuable PCI express 2.0 or 3.0 lanes (3.0 usually reserved for graphics and 2.0 for wifi/bluetooth/3G modems on mini-PCIe cards and other laptop expansion card slots)

A few brave geeks did open their laptops (or netbooks) and soldered devices like say bluetooth/wifi dongles or 3G modems to some of such unused ports, and the devices got recognized and worked.

USB root hubs are the same thing as the external USB hubs, that is they share a single USB connection's bandwith over multiple USB controllers and thus ports (also U... Read more

Hello,
We have a few virtualized Domain Controllers on VMware. As the lighweight Gateway is not very lightweigt - also with 16GB of RAM we were running out of Memory on our DCs - we decided to try port mirroring. This is working very good, but sometimes we get
the message that no traffic is received from one of the Domain Controllers. The only Thing we Need to do then is to restart the Gateway Service.
So the port mirroting is working and traffic is received by the Gateway.
Anyone else noticed this?
Could it be because we mirror the traffic from 3 Domaon Controllers to one port? But it also happens to the Gateways where we only mirror one DC.
But as I said - after a restart of the Gateway Service the error disappears and everything is working again.

Until yesterday, when I had to move the Windows Xbox Wireless receiver for Windows unit to another USB port, it worked for 2 years, no problem. Now,
no matter how many fixes I try, it will not connect the wireless controller.

Here's what I tried (many times)
Switched ports
Changed controller batteries (12 different, brand new batteries)

Different controller(s)

Removed, all not essential USB devices, etc, keyboard and mouse
Uninstalled and reinstalled the latest driver (from the CD and 4 different locations [all the same installer])
Moved the receiver within inches of the controller

Tried to use the connect button on the bottom of the receiver different ways (hit it once, hold it for up to 30 seconds, hold it once, then release it,
then hold it again (that makes the controller green circle blink faster for about 10 seconds).
Hold the connect button on the controller until the circle lights rotate from 1,2,3,4 (over and over in all of the above steps).
Made sure I had all the latest windows updates

And the "one" fix that worked for everyone I read, that didn't for me because the controller never shows under device manager, or add device to
your computer, it showed as "Unidentified Device" for all of them, and I never get any unknown device.
Here are their steps

Hi everyone.

First, a quick history. I'm using a desktop machine I 'built' in 2013, and hasn't had much use in the last year because I use OS X / Linux for work and school. The past few weeks I've been using it again for games and such, and up until a couple of days ago, things were going swimmingly. There was one issue, though, which was one of the audio jacks started to be buggy, which I don't believe had happened before. I had to hold my headphones in at a certain angle to get the "full" amount of sound to come through. I did a workaround with another port. Otherwise no problems.

Yesterday, I started to get some issues with the machine where when I was in-game (Rocket League), the machine would sometimes freeze up - not BSOD, but the cursor and display would stick. No keyboard input possible. Interestingly, the audio for the game would continue and "loop" properly - the song would continue. I think it did this indefinitely until I force powered off, but I'm not sure. I updated all my drivers (Driver Booster 3) and ran Malwarebytes to see if that would help things - it did not. I play with an xbox 360 controller, and at one point I remember plugging it into a USB port and it instantly freezing, so that seemed like a likely culprit. Seeing as I was starting to go down a rabbit hole, I just decided to reinstall windows. I did so last night without problem, and re-downloaded all my essential program. Mostly innocuous stuff - skype, steam, and so on. Nothi... Read more

Two causes, faulty hardware or drivers. As you are trying to use Win8, I'd say it's a driver issue. Nothing to do but wait for proper drivers to be released.

A few days ago I did a clean install of Windows 7. Now I have a problem. The computer is a wireless 'client'. It has a Realtek RTL8168D/8111D PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20).

When I bring up Device Manager and expand 'Network adapters' I see "Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller".

When I expand 'Other devices' I see "! Network Controller" (Note the exclamation point.) Double click on that and I see "The driver for this device is not installed. (Code 28). When I click on Update driver I get a message Can't find a driver. I have tried many times with different source folders and files and nowhere is a driver found.

I have gone to MSIs driver web page and downloaded the Realtek PCI-E Ethernet Driver for Windows 7 32/64 bit "realtek_pcielan_7_nb.zip", extracted the files and still no joy. (M/B is MSI G41M with Intel E7400)

There is a wireless icon in the tray. I click 'Open network and sharing center". No matter what I choose Win7 ends up telling me to plug in an Ethernet cable. No, this is a client not the server. I have verified that the NIC can connect to the computer with the Ethernet cable by using the old XP hard disk.

Any suggestions?

I've got two eSATA drives. They're almost new.

If the drives are turned on when you power up the
pc box you'll see the card BIOS bootup before the
mobo boots from its own BIOS chip.

With these cards you have various RAID options.
I wanted each drive to function independently so
I selected the "concatenation" option in the card
BIOS. This effectively seperates the two external
drives.

(If you want to know, use Google to get the various
definitions of "concatenation.")

XP is having serious problems with these drives. They
are listed normally under the card BIOS and the mobo BIOS.
I've plugged them into them into three other PCs that
can handle eSATA drives. Both drives are working fine.

With each reboot, you never know if one or both drives
will be recognized by XP. When XP decides to "see"
these drives they are shown as healthy in My Computer
and Disk Management.

A couple of seconds after attempting any basic command
like copying the drives vanish from XP. A system tray
error message appears about hardware failure. Believe
me, I wish the damn hardware was failing, but its not.

I updated the card drivers and flashed the card and mobo
BIOS. Silicon Image provides a management utility for
the card. I've seen dozens of these kind of apps. All
they do is show you what Windows is already managing.
I installed it anyway, hoping it might perform a miracle
and resolve these problems. The management app is

I have read/searched through most of the posts on this and various other sites and can't seem to find help with my problem. So hopefully someone will be able to help.

This morning when I woke up my computer worked properly. I then went to work, and when I turned it on I got the "blue screen of death." (I apologize for not posting the exact wording, but I did not think I would need it). I restarted the computer per the instructions, and it booted up. The computer, however, failed to connect to the wireless network. I noticed that the network icon was not in the taskbar. I then went to device manager and my integrated wireless adapter (Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG) had a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark. I clicked on properties and under the 'general' tab the device status read:

This device cannot start (Code 10)
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device

I then unistalled the controller and attempted to reinstall via the 'add hardware' program. I then received the message:

A problem occurred during hardware installation. Your device may not function properly

I then, believing it was a driver issue, downloaded the latest drivers from the intel website for my device on another computer. I uninstalled the controller again, and tried to install with the new drivers via a thumb drive. I received the same error message and the controller had the yellow triangle. When I clicked on properties this time I received the fol... Read more

A:Integrated Wireless Controller/PC Card Adapter/Ethernet port stopped working

Sounds like your motherboard is rapidly dying.

If the ethernet controller (or adapter) does not show under Network Adapters and is not in Other or Unknown devices with a warning or error message check in the BIOS (Setup) to see if it somehow got disabled. If it is already enabled, or doesn't show there, see my first paragraph.

When the ethernet controller is defective it can prevent other integrated and/or PCMCIA networking cards from working. When this happens sometimes a USB adapter will work.
