[SOLVED] Scan Disk / Disk Check File Not Operating

Q: [SOLVED] Scan Disk / Disk Check File Not Operating

Computer -> Right Click Hard Drive -> Click Properties -> Click Tools.

From there I get the Disk Check option. However After opening the file it does not run. No matter what is or is not checked the file will not run.

The program instantly closes out. Even when I try to set it so that it will run on the next start up. The file will close out without showing the confirmation box.

Now, when I do restart I go to my log in page, but not until after seeing a page for a brief moment, it looks like the page you see after completeing a disk check at start up.

Used the windows install DVD to check for errors in windows and to see if anything needed repairing, came back as everything was fine.

Any help is appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: [SOLVED] Scan Disk / Disk Check File Not Operating

Hello Ferdoc

Try running it with the /r (repair) switch

Start and then start typing "command prompt" until the shortcut shows up in the search list (at top). Then right click on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Choose to confirm or type in your password to elevate the process

When the command prompt opens, type in
chkdsk /r (there is a space before /)

Hi, this is just a question before I make any other moves using the Reatog xpe disk. I am unfamiliar with all of the diagnostic tools it came with so...
I just needed to know if the OTL scan I want to run will leave things as is,(not change anything on the C: drive) even if something is still wrong (perhaps with one of my userinit. files/keys). Thank you

Hey guys.

My disk defrag and Check disk are not working.

I can bring up both programs, but when I attempt to either Analyze, Defrag, or Start Scan, respectively, a error pops up, saying "Windows was unable to complete the disk check" and "Disk Defragmenter does not start"

I don't believe it is virus-related as I have ran the Malwarebytes program and nothing has come up. I also ran Trend Micro and nothing has popped up either.

I also wonder if it has anything do with my MP3 issue.

I doubt it, but if anyone can help me out with either situation, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance, folks.

I'm planning to reinstall OS etc. either on current HD or another if that would be better.
I set my box to scanning with check disk, and went out. When I returned the computer had rebooted and there was no message. Before I assume that it is safe to reinstall using this HD (about five years old), I'd like to run the data by someone who knows better than I do.
Can anyone tell me where to find the results of the scan?
Also, let's say the scan reveals no problems at all; anyone think I should replace the disk anyway?

A:How to find results of HD Check Disk scan?

...control panel - administrative tools - event viewer - in the left panel, "applications" - look for the entry "winlogon"...
...or RIGHT click my computer - manage - look for event viewer...
...even if you were there when it finished, the results flash so fast you wouldn't have time to read it anyway - as long as you had both boxes checked, (or used the "r" parameter if you used the command line to run it) the errors (if any) should be corrected...

Dear all,

I hope you can help. I have an issue with my PC which I think is virus and/or spyware related.

My issue is basically that my PC freezes randomly or during a virus scan. I have used McAfee before and during the scan 9/10 times my PC froze. I spoke to their support and they suggested I had a viruse but were pretty useless in helping me diagnose the virus (MCafee never actually found a virus in Safe Mode or normal mode.)

I then decided to remove McAfee thinking it may be an issue with their software and installed AVG Trial version. I am still having the same issue. I have run both in Safe mode and not found any problems. I have run CCleaner and resolved any issues it found.

I also find that my pc will crash (freeze) at random points (without running a virus scanner) I also tried running check disk which also caused a crash.

I hope someone can help diagnose the issue as it is driving me crazy.

I run Windows Vista on a Dell Studio XPS. I have all the latest updates for Vista and the virus software.

I loaned my USB flash (Imation Atom 4GB) disk to a colleague; it was working fine when I gave it to her. She could not dismount the disk from her netbook, even after everything was closed. The computer kept saying the disk was in use. After 5 minutes of this, I pulled the disk out and put it into my machine.

First, Microsoft Security Essentials found and removed “Worm:Win32/Autorun.gen!inf.

Next, I was given the message "Do you want to scan the disk for errors?" I clicked 'yes' but got a "Windows can't check the disk while it is in use. Do you want to dismount the volume first?" I click on "Force dismount" and received a message "Windows can't check the disk while it is in use. Do you want to check for hard disk errors next time you start your computer." I check the box that says “Schedule disk check,” the box automatically closes. I re-start my computer, it boots up just fine, but does not appear to do any type of disk check.

I have no problems “safely removing the disk.” I can eject it every time without fail, but every time I plug the device back into the system, I receive the “scan and fix” prompt.

When I try to format the device, I am given the message "The drive is in use. Another program or process is using this device. Do you want to format it anyway?" I click "Yes" and receive the message "Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or programs that are using... Read more

I just have to empty a SD card; compressing its contents to a 7zip-file takes too much time, and if I have to access the files quickly, I prefer to use a mountable filetype. Thus the requirement to quickly create a VHDX-file, then mount it using the context
Tested using Windows 8.1 without Hyper-V-Role installed.
First, you need to create an empty vhdx-File as a template.
You already have to specify the maximum size this vhdx is allowed to expand to, in my case 255 GiB (255 GiB × 1024 MiB/GiB = 261120 MiB). This can be placed in either your user profile or shared for all users:

Current User: C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\All Users: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\
To create the template:
1. Start an elevated command prompt
2. Run diskpart.exe
3. Enter the following commands:
create vdisk file=C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\Virtual-Hard-Disk.vhdx type=expandable maximum=261120
attach vdisk
create partition primary
format fs=ntfs label="Blank Virtual Disk" quick
assign letter=z
detach vdisk
4. Once the template is in place, just run this command:
reg.exe add HKCR\.vhdx\Windows.VhdFile\ShellNew /f /v FileName /t REG_SZ /d Virtual-Hard-Disk.vhdx
Now you just have to right-click in any file explorer window, also on remote network shares, select New > Hard Disk Image File and rename the file as you wish!

1. Hello. I would like to see if all data files in my computer are still healthy, i.e. they haven't been damaged or corrupt yet. Manually opening one by one is not an option. There are literally millions of files.

I knew the System File Checker but it is only for Windows system files. I want to check the health of all my data files. Disk checking, as far as I know, has nothing to do with file corruption. The drive can be healthy even if some files have been corrupt unrelated to drive failure reasons.

I tried to search on the net but couldn't find any.

Any method or workaround which could check for file corruption & errors, even if the check is not comprehensive or faultless, is much appreciated. Thank you.
2. I would like to ask whether there is any good program which could:
(A) *really* wipe specific files and folders irrecoverably
(B) *really* wipe the data of whole drive/disk irrecoverably
I hear that some programs claim it does but actually not (it's still there when you use the recovery program) so I want something which is really working, be it free or paid. Thank you.

This sounds straight forward, but I can not figure this out I am new to this. I have a Etower 500 MHz with 192 mb's of memory and 4 gig hard drive. I used partition magic 3.5 to partition the drive inorder to try and install DOS and win98 and maybe linux. I am following the instructions from this web site here>> http://www.xperts.co.za/multi-boot/ I am using the disks that I made from downloading from this site referring to REUEL Boot disk this disk took me through the entire process. It all went great until I rebooted and I keep getting Non-System disk or disk error I have no disk's in the drives. I even installed win98 and all it did was go straight to windows. With in windows I could see the drives I partitioned all of them except the one that windows was actually on. I have done this again and again trying to see if I did anything wrong. Anybody know what is wrong?
Also can anyone tell me how to get free dos I can not figure out what files to download. The one that I am trying to install now is suppose to be mini dos 6.22. I am really new to dos so I am doing a lot of guessing.

Hello, I have a problem when I do disk checks on my Laptop, it gets to 59% complete but after that it freezes, I know it's frozen as I left it for 5 hours scanning the 1 file and it didn't move up. Try to boot into safe mode (press F8 a few times after the PCs first beep at bootup) and let chkdsk finish. Then click on Start/Run and type in MSCONFIG to see if it is entered there under one of the boot menus. Stop it if you can.

Hi, I've tried a lot of things but nothing is working, I would greatly appreciate any help. About two months ago a blue screen would come up and then shut my computer down, which I've been able to work around. Now, not sure if it's connected, but it's not reading my cd drive (won't eject or read it in my burner), disk defragmenter says "Disk Defragmenter could not start", and check disk says "Windows was unable to complete the disk check." I've tried some things I've found on the web including running check disk from cmd which ran but didn't change anything; the volume came back not dirty, and I checked the logical manager and all in the services section. So I recently installed Windows 7 Home Premium on an Acer Aspire 5349. I've been having a bunch of issues with it since the install.

Firstly, When I boot, it takes me to the "Disk Check" screen and tells me that one of my disks needs to be checked for consistency. However, the disk in question isn't something like "C:" or "D:" it's "\\?\volume{c4afec15-cb60-11e4-9583-806e6f6e6963}". The disk check also automatically cancels. It doesn't prompt me with the usual " Press any button to stop the disk check" option, just straight to " Disk check has been cancelled"

When I eventually get to the desktop, I get the screen " Windows detected a hard disk problem ". I look at the details and I'm told that my C:\ drive has been reporting failures. When I check the status of the disk via the Disk Management tool I'm told that all my partitions are healthy.

When I actually use the laptop, it's very slow and frequently freezes. It takes a while to catch back up and sometimes these freezes lead to a BSOD. The BSOD message was KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR. I checked the event viewer and it also seemed that before certain crashes I would have driver controller error on an IDE Port. I've attached a picture of the disk check screen, event viewer, and memory dump. I apologize about the quality of the pictures, I couldn't screenshot the images on the actual laptop as it was freezing and crashing too often.

As of late my PC has been going very slow, stuttering, freezing for a minute occasionally, and sometimes when I restart I get a disk read error that requires me to turn the PC off and on again. I ran check disk using command prompt, it got to 12% before it said it had found corrupt files, now it gets up to 37% verification before it finds corrupt files but cannot repair them.

I tried running system repair from the windows 7 disk, but it fails. I've used western digital to run tests on my hard drive, but there were no problems found.

dont know how to fix this now, i've been told its probably the hard drive failing but the scan says otherwise. I can really tell how it takes a lot longer to boot up, log in, even open internet browser takes a lot longer than before.

help appreciated

A:Check disk failing, disk read errors, blue screen, computer going slow

Are you running the Western Digital Data Lifeguard CD ISO (extract first) burned to CD using WIndows Image burner, then booted to run the Extended Scan? This should give you a definitive diagnosis of the HD, which appears from the Disk CHeck to be failing.

If the HD checks out I would do is try a perfect test Clean Reinstall to the same or another HD to know for sure.

Hi everyone.

Going crazy with this. So about 2 weeks ago, my "intel rapid storage technology" software gave me an error. I opened it and saw that one of the disks (2 disk array) in my Raid 0 array, had an error. I reset it back to normal and left it. Then I started to get pop ups saying that files were corrupt over the course of the next few days. My OS still worked and everything worked as usual, except my sound card. I have no more sound from anything plugged into the jacks, only USB connected audio works.

So, I attempted to run a check disk to fix said errors, but I get a message that the drive is not accessible due to a recent software package install "error 766f6c756d652e63 3f1". I went into my system restore and all restore points are gone, except one. When I click on it, it says the drive is not accessible.

Today, I installed 2 new 1TB hybrid drives in another Raid 0 volume (yes I know...but that's what I am using for now). When I went to write the system image, it said the disk had errors and to run a check disk first......which I can not.. I clicked ignore and let it go and write the system image with the errors. When it is done, do you think that I will be able to run a check disk on the new drives (2nd array, since it will not be inaccessible) to repair the errors that it wrote from the bad disk?

I am not sure where to go from here. My PC is still up and running and almost finished copying the image to the two new drives. My hopes are th... Read more

Hi guys.

I have a weird one here. I downloaded few video files from a streaming website using Internet Download Manager and couple of such files do not playback properly. In Windows Explorer (detailed view and preview pane) it shows the file sizes as few hundred MB (which should be correct) but when I check the file properties (right click file -> properties), it says the file size as 0.

Now it doesn't let me delete the file, rename it or move it saying that Explorer cannot find such file. Tried unlocker. No good. Tried CCleaner. No good. I even ran CCleaner's wipe free space thing. No good.

I thought it was some missing index messing with everything. So I did a regular check disk from Computer but it didn't fix anything. Then I did a full check disk from cmd prompt which ran in the next boot up and didn't fix the problem either.

Now, instead of fixing this issue, the Action Center says that it found a problem with the drive and wants to run check disk every time I boot to Windows. It reboots, runs check disk, doesn't fix anything and gives the same error once again upon reboot.

Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

I can fix it the hard way; that is, move everything from the D:\ to backup drive, format D:\ the restore. That's more than 2TB data! Backing up is not a problem because I already have backed up everything I need. Restore is the hard part. Will have to do it overnight anyways.

I have vista on an acer aspire laptop and recently had to reinstall from the back up disks which I have done before with no problems. This time the machine will not boot up and gives a message about a check disk file missing. It then goes onto start up options page, safe mode etc, but selecting any option goes round in a loop to the check disk missing message. I have looked it up but the only solutions seem to involve making a floppy start up disk, there is no floppy drive these days so I am stuck.
I am using the machine from a linux CD so it must be the windows software that is at fault.

Hi there,

I bought a used laptop. I checked it carefully and sure that there was 300Gb Dik C and 500Gb Disk D.

But after a day, Disk D suddenly went missing. I checked the Disk Management and use other partition software but Disk D (w 500Gb) cannot be found.

I tried partition recovery and perhaps i might recover the 500gb in Disk C but no success.

I checked the files in Disk C and noticed a certain file with "ss" as a name and icon like a disk. "ss" format as I check is in Disk Image File.
And to my surprise, the files originally in Disk D is here in "ss"

After several tries, I figured out that in order to unhide Disk D, I have to open "ss" inside Disk C. Everytime I shut down my laptop and opened it, Disk D is missing. Then I have to click the file "ss" again in Disk C to unhide Disk D.

Though annoying, somehow it solves the problem.

However I realized that my Disk D w/c have 500gb would only saved the files in Disk C "ss" file. Meaning if I only have 50Gb files in Disk D, only that 50 Gb will be saved in "ss" file.

Has anyone encountered this problem? There are no other problems in my laptop except that Disk D file is missing. Can someone help what to do to make Disk D appear as it is? My friend told me to just reformat my laptop but it might ruin my disks. I'm currently using Windows 8.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

A:Disk D Missing/ Disk D Saved File is in Disk C

I agree with your friend. Do a clean reinstall of Windows and get a fresh start with that laptop.
Using a laptop that still contains all the debris and issues from its previous owner is not what you want to do.

What's the brand name and model name and complete model number of that laptop?

Restart the PC and keep pressing F8 during the bootup. You should get a menu with 6 options. Take the option for SafeMode. Once in SafeMode run your defrag/scandisk. When it's done click on Start>Shutdown>Restart to get back to Normal mode.

When you click them they open a cmd window, dont close that window. Be patient that window will dissapear by itself. These advanced shortcuts are the best free defraggers there are. To get better you would need to buy something like PerfectDisk, so dont bother with defraggler etc...

Hey Guys,
I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what my problem is. Basically, we had an issue with the computer and so we force restarted it at one point about a month ago. After that, we started getting requests to run a check disk after every time the computer was rebooted. The check disks take 20+ hours for some reason on this computer, and we cannot afford to have it down that long since it is a work computer. We cancelled the disk check and afterwards we noticed that the hard drive was filling itself up. The computer has a 450gb hard drive and after a couple of hours it was telling us that there were only 2mb of space left (we have maybe 20gb of data on the computer total). This is the point in which I stepped in and ran a disk cleanup and deleted all of the old system restore points. It gave us about a gb of space so I left it alone (I didn't realize at this point what the problem was, just thought it was too much stuff on the comp). The next day the computer's user told me it was the same problem and I knew that she wasn't using all of the space that I had found so I checked it out again. Once again, it was giving me the low disk space error. I decided to download and install Windirstat to see what was taking up all the space. When I run Windirstat, it tells me that 430gb of the 450gb of space is "Unknown". After that, I shut it down and let it run the check disk completely over the course of a weekend. It ran for about a week after... Read more

A:Windows 7 No Disk Space after Disk Check Cancellation

Likely the file system was messed up by the forced restart, a rare but possible occurence.

So the unknown used space may be failed attempts to copy data over to repair the file system. This is why it's always advised to back up data before doing a Disk Check and of course data should always be backed up anyway against HD failure - which itself cannot be ruled out here.

I would test the HD with the maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan, followed by a Disk Check done from the Win7 disk or Repair CD's System Recovery Options Command Line which doesn't depend upon the OS on a potentially scrambled file system.

Obviously the user can check the consistency of a FULL, whole NTFS hard disk by performing a "chkdsk" command and run in addition one of the well known tools (like MiniTool Partition Wizard) a surface test to check whether all sectors of a hard disk are ok.

But what if I don't want to check the full, whole hard disk but only one (big) file?
I suspect only one file of being defect and want to avoid a long-lasting chkdsk and surface test.

Are there tools which narrow the ntfs and surface check to one file?

A:Check for ONE File (!) if NTFS structure + hard disk sectors ok?

Don't know if Chkdsk can be done on a single file but I'd first Copy it to another drive, USB Thumb drive or USB HDD, delete it, run Chkdsk again to assure that was the only file involved then run Chkdsk on the drive it was copied to. If it comes up good, put the file back where it was. Or if less than about 4.2GB put it on a DVD-/+R disc.

I periodically get notices from Win7 that I need to run the disk check utility. This is usually after a BSOD. These events have been occurring from the day I bought this laptop and I have posted them here in the past.

This time, the disk check utility changed names on at least 12 files. I don't know WHAT files, because the utility said the file names were corrupted.

After the reboot, I found that my Libraries were missing from the file manager. My Documents, Pictures, Videos and Music were gone. If I looked by clicking on C: and then navigating to them, I could find them, but the file manager could not.

Also, clicking on the Start button, then All Programs, gave me an empty screen. All the shortcuts were gone. Many of the shortcuts on my Task Bar are missing their Icons, but they work.

Many of my music files will not play because the file extension is now m4p. Changing the file extension to mp3 or mp4 does not work, the system sees them as an unknown file type.

I ran Microsoft Security Essentials, a FULL SCAN, and it scanned about 86,000 files. That was all it could find.

I have attached images that show the start menu and virus scan results as well as the usual dump files. The images show a black desktop, but I corrected that by re-choosing the custom theme I had made.

I tried to use Restore, but the restore points have dissapeared, and I cannot restore to before this event.

A:Disk check utility changed file names, now I got problems.

Try this first:
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Then try this:
Icon Cache - Rebuild

Then try running Malwarebytes:

When I try to use Check disk on drive C: with the 'Automatically fix file system errors' box ticked and then press 'Start' I get the usual message that the disk check cannot be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files and asks 'Do you want to schedule this disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?'

However, if I click on 'Yes' and then restart the computer, it boots straight into Windows without doing a disk check.

It used to work but for some reason does not work any more.

Any help would be appreciated.

Recently just did a scan disk as the computer said that I should do it for some reason when I went to look at a program so I did and I missed the last part of the scan disk so I have no idea what was found if anything as I went to level 5 scanning free space and nothing harmful was found except 5 unindexed files which it fixed. Is there any way to find out the scan disk readout remembering that I am not very computer savy as far as typing in commands goes?

A:Solved: scan disk readout.

You didn't tell us what version of Windows or Linux or OSX you use, I'm gonna assume its Windows based on the description so see here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/96938-check-disk-chkdsk-read-event-viewer-log.html

I've tried system restore and got this message:
Windows detected file system corruption on OS (C:). You must check disk for errors before it can be restored.). So down below of that message, there's a link which says ''Check the disk for errors''. So I clicked on it, and then it says ''Windows can't check disk while in use, do you want to check for hard disk errors the next time you start your computer?''. So I agree to it by clicking ''Schedule disk check''. So then I restart my computer & and it does nothing at all. I wanted to try system retore because theres this pop-up that keeps accuring on my Internet screen (Google Crome,Internet Explore) that says ''Please Install Flash Player Pro To Continue'', and saying that It's outdated. But when I did try to install it, It wouldn't let me. Comes to find out, I THINK (Idk) it's like some type of virus. But I was just wondering on why my computer wont allow me to restore now? What should I do??

I recently had a new hard drive put in by a friend. All the data from my old hard drive was put into the new one. But now I can't run a scan disk or a disk defragment. It says I don't have enough memory. But I have 256 MB and my resources are usually in the high 90 percentile. I only had Explorer and Systray running. I can't figure out why it would say I have insufficent memory. Does anyone know why this happened and can it be fixed?

A:Solved: Scan Disk and Defrag Problem

What os? If its 98, try booting to dos and running the scandisk. Try the defrag in safemode.

If ME, try both in safe mode.

Hello all!

I'm having a few problems

1. When I run scandisk it hits 20% and stops.

2. The last 2 or 3 days my computer has been running really slow. If I have 2 or more pages open and try to use f11 or click on my favorites button it takes ages to respond. If I try to open a new window it will freeze for 5 to 10 seconds.

I ran ad-aware and avg (made sure that I updated both before scanning) and they didn't find anything.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Since I'd downloaded Kaspersky Rescue for another PC I thought I'd run it on my main PC to check all was ok. I only found one infected file (which was some keygen thing), but now the pc won't boot up. It says

c:\windows\system32\l_intl.nls is missing or corrupt

Have I caused serious damage here?

I can try and repair this file using the recovery console , but I need to find my raid driver disks first.

But I'm worried the whole thing is going to be roken now!
