Help, lots of my Windows 7 files have been corrupted or are missing

Q: Help, lots of my Windows 7 files have been corrupted or are missing

hi Gang,

I don't know how it happened, I probably got overly ambitious with a disk cleanup utility and now several functions of windows 7 don't work. New updates don't install, other updates that I DID install are missing, I am unable to run certain games, and I can't run SFC /scannow.

However virus scan updates appear to be fine.

What is the best way to fix this? I have an old backup I did with Norton Ghost on disk but something is wrong with the second disk so I can't use to to reinstall the entire backup but I might be able to extract some old files if I knew which ones to extract.

I am running Window Seven Home Premium. It is a legal copy. I got it directly from Microsoft.

If I try to run SFC /scannow from Windows I cannot get it to show up or do anything. Its like I never did anything. If I try to run SFC /scannow from the boot CD using this command
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=f:\ /offwindir=f:\windows

I get this error messge:

Windows Resource Protection Could not run the repair service
IF I try to run the repair outlined here:

http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/f...the-repair-service-when-running-sfc-in-vista/

I get an error saying Windows cannot find the file specified.

My computer specs are

Preferred Solution: Help, lots of my Windows 7 files have been corrupted or are missing

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I think somehow the program you ran deleted all the links from the file extension to the correct program to open it with. Some one here will probably have a better solution than me, as this will take alot of time.

Open a folder then go Tools > Folder Options then select the 'file types' tab.
This will then list all the file extensions with what program they are opened with.

You will have to browse to find the correct file extension then go 'Change' then find the program it is suppose to open with.
ie. Select 'mp3' then 'change' then find the program it opens with (I use Itunes to play my mp3's so I would browse to :\Program Files\iTunes\itunes.exe

You would have to do this for every file extension you are having problems with.

I think someone will have a quick fix for you but I am not that smart

Just bought a new laptop with Vista Home Premium 64bit. Using it for a day, I ran HijackThis! and cameup with a bunch of system files missing. I reinstalled the OS from the recovery disks, still have same results. System seems to run fine, though. Anyone with similar problems?

Following files show as missing.

C:\Windows\System32\alg.exe (file missing)
C:\Windows\system32\DFSR.exe (file missing)
C:\Windows\System32\msdtc.exe (file missing)
C:\Windows\system32\locator.exe (file missing)

C:\Windows\system32\vssvc.exe (file missing)
C:\Windows\system32\wbem\WmiApSrv.exe (file missing)

I received a message that said I needed to update my video driver. While doing that, I was instructed to delete the old one, install the new one, and then restart. During that time, my anti virus software (Avast) found what appeared to be a Trojan virus. It was in a win32.dll file, I clicked repair on the virus program. This happened about 6 times during the scan, all times I clicked repair. Once the scan was over and the new drivers were installed I restarted my computer to a world of problems. I have no video drivers now, sometimes I can not even get past my boot up screen, and my computer keeps shutting down without warning. I tried to do a system restore and my computer is telling me its unable to restore I have tried 6 different days and they all say the same thing. Can someone help? Today I used Runscanner, which found more than 50 missing files, 48 of which are drivers, e.g. Abiosdsk.sys, abp480n5.sys, ..., WDICA.sys.

I guess, not being very experienced, that it would be possible to download each of these somewhere and put it in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers folder.

Two questions: 1. Where do I go for the downloads to be almost sure that I get the correct (non-infected) files. 2. Is it possible to download several files in one go?

If it's pointing to D:\ then a file(s) on the cd are corrupt or not there. You could try scandisk on the cd or even a virud checker - but for my money the cd is knackered.

Hardware
Virus or registry.

Registry, unless you have it backed up, you must reinstall
if Hardware you must bring your computer into the shop to be repaired
if Virus, run a full anti virus scan. Download and run a malwarebytes scan
If not a virus, make a system restore from before the problem. Run an SFC command
If this does not work, test the hardware.

I'm running a Windows XP home desktop. I've had it about two years, and have been mostly happy with it.. That is, until last week. After simply turning on my computer, I discovered all my files were missing. The folders were there as before, but my files were completely gone. I have Norton anti-virus, but apparently that wasn't enough to protect me from whatever nasty invaded my pc.

The odd thing is: everything was fantastic the previous night, and the files on the "guest" and "shared" accounts are completely unscathed. The only thing I did differently from normal was I updated my Verizon DSL to a faster speed.

I was wondering how I could find out what happened. I've run a few virus scans, which have all come out 100% clean. And I've checked the computer's log to see if suspicious activity occurred. Only some sort of power glitch is listed.

Being ever the optimist, I was also hoping there might be some way I could recover my lost files. Most of my information wasn't backed up, so essentially, I've lost everything. (Please no lectures here, I have learned my lesson, and believe me, I'm more than kicking myself.)

I have already installed and run Restorer Pro 2000 to no avail. Some of my files aren't even listed on it, and most of the ones I did manage to recover refuse to open. I keep getting the "this file is either missing or corrupt" dialogue box.

Strangest of all: the files I've tried to sav... Read more

The only problem is that some of my files are missing and some are corrupted, so basically I'm moving files over to another drive, anyway to recover the lost files?
Also, Win7 is installed on a separate ssd...

Hello TSG!

I think I have a corrupted OS in my hands. My computer worked fine yesterday. This morning I added an extended SATA hard drive. When it booted, Windows XP (Pro SP2) startup seemed unusually slow. After I used the hard drive manufacturer's CD to partition the HD and rebooting, I could not get on any of the limited XP accounts because it required a password when it should not have. So I was forced to log on my admin account, after which I've discovered the following major problems...

1.Many control panel functions fail, including:
-User accounts window shows blank
-Add/Remove Programs don't work, an error pops up for not finding Windows Installer
-Admin Tools>Services shows no services, totally blank
2. Taskbar has quick launch, language bar, etc. But does NOT show open windows
3. Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player does not work
4. RealTek audio works, and sounds are normal, but system & Volume Control do not detect audio hardware.
5. System Restore fails ("is not able to protect your computer") even in Safe Mode
6. WinKey does not pop up Start Menu
7. Windows startup abnormally slow, as mentioned before.

I am posting this from Firefox, which with a number of other programs unrelated to Microsoft seem to work for the moment. I think I'm missing system files or they are corrupt. I've recently had a Vundo infection which I did clean up, but now I can't even open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

I've just found out that the folder containing my baby's photos from her first year cannot be opened displaying "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" when I try to open it from my Windows 7, whereas when I access it through Ubuntu (I mount the files from windows to access it) it opens it empty
I remember that a couple of days ago I was rearranging those pictures from the folder in sub-folders by cutting and pasting from the main folder to the sub-folders, but I guess I did that from Ubuntu, not from Windows, where they are stored. I first thought that I have lost them and trued to recover using software program but it did not detect them as deleted. I have no idea what to do and these are really important for me and my family.
I also tried to find them in via the windows search but to no avail. I also checked ubuntu but nothing came out:(

If anyone has any suggestions please share them, but do make as simple expalantion/suggestion as possible since, obviously, I am a dumb'ss when it comes to computers.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I attempted to transfer the 250GB Hard Drive (F & G) from my old Sony Vaio desktop PC via a Hard Drive enclosure (model: MaxValue USB2.0 HD IDE/SATA) to my new Dell Vostro desktop PC (both Windows XP).

The enclosure installed correctly and I transfered a few folders I needed at the time. Sadly, I let the rest sit in there; planning to either store them in the enclosure or transfer later.

A few days later, I booted the PC with the enclousre connected and noticed the PC was apparently deleting files from the enclosure systematically. I turned off the enclosure to avoid deletions. When I tried to access the F part of the drive, I was told that the drive was corrupted and could not be read. I tried running "Check disk for errors" as instructed to no avail. I noticed a few files from the G drive were missing also, but a very minor amount.

However, while the Enclosure was plugged in (after booting) a few days later I was told by my Sophos Antivirus that sp... Read more

If you "check it for errors" it runs chkdsk. If the files are corrupted chkdsk will move them to another folder. That is why the disk size is not going down and the files are disappearing.

Realize that the more you do to it now, the less likely it is to recover. I would turn it off and unhook it until you get it to a professional.

Hello, thanks for looking at my problem!

I bought a new 64GB Class 10 MicroSDHC card to put in my Samsung Galaxy S5. For the last three days I've been trying to add ~26GB of music to the card without success. I've tried transferring it from my laptop with a card reader, transferring it from my laptop straight to the phone and using windows media player's sync function. It takes half a day or more to transfer all the files so it's been tough to troubleshoot what's going on.

In all three cases I formatted the SD card from my phone first so I'd be working with a fresh card. After the transfer is done the card will show "35GB out of 64GB" used up. When I go into a music player (I've tried several) it only shows the A and B artists and sometimes the latter letters, X,Y, and Z. When I look in explorer every artists folder is in the music folder, but then when I open the artists folder none of the music is actually in there.

I've looked through every folder in the SD card and I cannot find any of these missing files. I've tried doing some google-fu but I can't find any similar problems like this. Anybody have an idea about whats going on?

I am a return customer to Bleeping Computers. You helped me immensely with my last PC dilema! Thanks in advance for any assistance you may have on this one:

Background info:
Sony Vaio desktop (Pentium 4, 3.2 GHz, 512K ram) with XP Media Center Edition ver 2002 SP3.
Everything works fine except Media Center. There has not been a problem with it for the 2-3 years of owning this computer until recently. I cannot identify any new programs or drivers that may have caused the problem. I have already tried to do a system restore to prior dates - without success.

Description of the problem:
Media Center loads normally when activated. From the Media Center start menu screen, when I select "My TV", I get the following error message:

"CANNOT LOAD FILES: Some of the files needed to play radio or video are missing or corrupt"

All the other menu options within Media Center work fine, I just cannot get any video for TV or any info on the TV Guide. I can play movies using "My Video" and play MP3's using My Music within Media Center. Yes, the TV cable cable is still connnected to my computer.

I would like to avoid a complete reinstall of the operating system to fix this problem if at all possible. I have no idea of how to find the missing files or whether it is possible to selectively reinstall the missing files. Can you help? This is a different computer tha my last inquiry - so I do not have HJT installed (if needed)

Thanks again.

I'm running xp media center edition on my laptop, with automatic windows update. All was well yesterday, and the computer shut down normally. This morning I tried to boot up, and almost immediately it gave me a missing/corrupted file error message (sorry, can't remember the exact file). Using an xp CD from another of my computers (which only has SP1 on it), I was able to expand that missing/corrupted file and restart. Restart gave me another missing/corrupted file (again, didn't write it down, just corrected it by expanding from the xp CD). Restarted, it said I had missing/corrupted system32\drivers\isapnp.sys file. Expanded, corrected, restarted. Then it says missing/corrupted system32\drivers\ntfs.sys. This one, apparently, you copy instead of expand. So, I renamed the corrupted (ntfs.old) and copied. Restarted. Got the same missing/corrupted message. Tried copying several more times, and it did ask if I wanted to overwrite (and I could see the file where it was supposed to be when I ran a "dir" command), and I did. Still giving me same missing/corrupted error. c:\windows shows that 5 files were amended late last night (10.10pm): bootstat.dat, brownie.ini, wiadebug.log, wiasrvc.log and windowsupdate.log. Earlier in the day, win.ini and wmsetup.log were amended (but not consciously by me). I thought maybe the ntfs.sys on the CD was too old, so I tried to copy it from my tower computer, but it denied me access (a ... Read more

Hello.

I just finished scanning with Rkill and it came up with two malware processes, as well as numerous possibly patched files, and missing digital signatures. Yesterday when I ran Rkill it showed nothing out of the ordinary with the exception of the Windows Defender being disabled.

Somehow I don't understand what suddenly spiked such unusual activity. What I'd like to know is, is that if these have something to do with the current database of Rkill, or something else.

I couldn't post the log because it was too long so here's the link.

I tried to fix the problem in several ways: reinstalled the video drivers from the Dell Driver Installation disc, reinstalled SP3, ran Norton Disc Doctor where an error came up that there was an error on HD3 and the master partition table is unreadable (Only low level format will correct this problem). I got windows up and running for awhile on this new computer I built. Soon, I found out that, I found out XP had corrupted files. After going into XP Setup, and attempting to fix the problems, it still had problems reading files from the XP CD. I was NOT able to do a repair. Half way through a normal installation, it usually gave me the error saying that whatever files were corrupted and could not copy them over... Windows XP may not run properly press <ENTER> to retry and <ESCAPE> to skip file. After hitting <ENTER> over and over a million times to see if it would eventually work, I realized that it was hopeless becuase it had file after file that was bad. When attempting to go BACK into XP setup and doing it all over again INCLUDING reformating I had the same problems. I then realized that my only way to re-format the HD is using the floppy disk that came with the HD. Only problem is that it formated it into FAT-32. This format only took about 10 seconds if that to complete. However, it did remove XP's partitians and allow me to reinstall XP. After XP reformatted my HD BACK into INFT format, again, about half way through SETUP it did the exact same thing. Keep in mind I tried this whole deal about 5 times. I began to suspect the CD-ROM drive as being bad so I switched CD-ROM drives with one that works on my other computer. I made sure BIOS recognized it and all checked all the settings again, hoping that might solve the problem but it didnt. So as of ... Read more

Okay, so this morning I turned on my desktop computer, and I got a blue screen with an error message. I don't know why this happened, yesterday it was working fine. Here's part of the message:

STOP: c0000218 {Registry file failure} the registry cannot load the hive (file): \systemRoot\System32\config\sam

I rebooted my computer, and it said something about turning off wrong, and gave me options to either boot into safe mode, restart normally, or restart at the time that worked normally. All of them lead to the same error mesage with the blue screen.

I did a little research on this error, and found a microsoft help page about it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545
Instead of using the recovery console from the CD, I used my computer's recovery console (everytime I reboot, it gives me an option to go into the recovery console or continue normally, so I entered that recovery console, thinking it was the same as the CD's recovery console...) Whenever I try to start my computer, the bios loads as normal, but then I get a black screen with the message: Windows can not start because C:\WINDOWS\System32\config\system is missing or corrupted.
It tells me that I can try to repair the problem by loading the repair console on the Windows XP install disk, but whenever I try this, I get a black screen with a DOS console, and I don't know enough DOS to fix the problem. Help please!

P.S. If it is avoidable, I'd rather NOT have to reformat or wipe my hard drive.

There are a number of functions available in the Repair Console. The one most likely to help would be "chkdsk /r", but you can review this and other possibilities by simply typing "help" after logging in.

A:windows system 32 file missing or corrupted!!

There is no System32 file...there is a system32 folder which is full of different files.

You need to pay attention and write down the complete message exactly as it appears onscreen...then someone may have an idea or two.

Do you have a Microsoft XP install CD?

Unwanted encoding messages on opening MSWord files. Inability to open MSExcel files and picture files. Apparently corrupted files?I am having problems opening .doc and .xls and .jpg files in some (but not all) folders in my folder tree, e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\My Documents\Folder X. However, Folders Y and Z are apparently unaffected. This has arisen only recently. My system is Windows XP (Home), and SP2 upgraded to SP3.MSWORD EXAMPLE:- On opening a Word file (whether from Word or from Windows Explorer) I receive this dialog box;"File Conversion - (filename).doc""Select the encoding that makes your document readable." The already selected button is "Other encoding" and the suggested code is "Japanese". The preview pane shows only an array of characters, all the same.On trying to select the button "Windows (Default)", the preview changes to a continuous array of lower-case xxxxxxx. On returning to the "Other encoding" option and trying "Auto-Select", the selected code returns itself to "Japanese" with the display as already noted above. On returning to the "Other encoding" option and trying "Western European (Windows)", the display reverts to the Windows Default style as already noted above, lines of xxxxxxx. I am unable to open the file.MSEXCEL EXAMPLE:- On opening an Excel file, all I get is an immensely long string of a character in ... Read more

This sounds like it might be a malware infection.

Have you run any scans lately?

Did you download BackUp4All from a reputable source?

I currently have Windows XP on my computer. I powered up one day, and now I receive the following message: "Windows cannot start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system". I searched on the MS help/support page (http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;307545) how to fix the problem by using the Recovery console. When I type the first line in the command prompt I receive the following message: "C:\Windows>copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak --- The system cannot find the file specified." All othe command lines work except for this one. I followed and finished all the commands and I still get the message about the file missing or corrupt. I guess it's missing as opposed to corrupt? Any help? Thanks!!

Load Recovery Console and run sfc /scannow,
you need the Windows CD in the drive to run both programs
so let it replace the files it states have changed from the original
version. If you have updated the service packs on the computer
you will want to slipstream the service pack to the OS files and
burn a new CD.

Good Luck.
