Inspiron 7548 Trackpad Issues After Windows 10 Upgrade

Q: Inspiron 7548 Trackpad Issues After Windows 10 Upgrade

My trackpad occasionally will just stop working. The buttons become unresponsive as well as the trackpad itself. Only way to temporarily fix it is to reboot. I and many others had this issue on Windows 8.1 but it seemed fixed after updating to the A03 bios. Now, on Windows 10 using the A05 bios, the issue is back. Is anyone else having this problem?

Preferred Solution: Inspiron 7548 Trackpad Issues After Windows 10 Upgrade

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I also had some issues, the it was unstable and then after some windows updates it failed to boot. I decided to roll back and will be waiting on the upgrade. Looks like other Inspiron 7548 users are having issues

I love the new Inspiron 7548, except for the trackpad. The trackpad just doesn't work, since day 1. Half the time, it skips, clicks in the wrong places, and there is no configuration app (Alps configuration manager??) to manage the sensitivity or other settings of the trackpad. I am fairly savvy managing driver etc issues, but there are no drivers posted for trackpad in 7548 support page. What am I missing??
My trackpad absolutely refuses to work sometimes, and even the touchscreen becomes unresponsive during those times. I did a diagonstic on the Dell website  and came up with "Critical hardware error" . I personally don't think its a hardware problem as everything appears fine, maybe there are no drivers because the laptop just released a month ago? I really need help with this, please.

A:Inspiron 7548 trackpad critical failure

Hi Sayak57,
Thanks for your post!
On the main Windows 8.1 screen:   - Swipe in from the right to display the "charms",   - Pick "Change PC settings",- "PC and devices" on the left side of the screen   - "Mouse and touchpad"
and you're all set.
If you need to reinstall the driver, here is the link.

FOr some reason, my dell inspiron 7548 trackpad driver reverted to a generic driver and I can no longer configure two finger gestures. The website based on the Service Tag points to a Unifying Driver from Logitech that doesn't seem to make sense, and asks for a small usb receiver. Any suggestions?

I updated my Dell Inspiron 15 7000 7548 to windows 10 only to be brought into a catastrophic error. Based on my research this may work for other laptops but I can only say I used and tested it on my Dell.

A:Dell Inspiron 15 7000 7548 Windows 10 internal_power_error Fix

The problem is that during the Windows 10 installation, the computer installs the wrong graphics card driver. It installs the AMD Radeon R7 M265 driver instead of the M270.
Here are the steps to fix the issue.
1. As soon as the computer boots up, login, and then hit the Windows Key button and the X,
2. Go to "Device Manager"
3. Scroll to "Display Adapters / AMD Radeon R7 M265 / Driver/ Disable". This will stop the computer from rebooting.
4. To install the correct graphics driver, just hit "Update Driver" and have it "Search Automatically" for it.
You can download the Windows 10 drivers from the link below.

In the newly deployed GetWindows10 app, there's an option to "Check your PC" - when I choose this option on my Inspiron 14z, I get:
Windows 10 will work on this PC
This PC can be upgraded but there may be some issues.
These devices aren't fully compatible with Windows 10
AMD Radeon HD 7570M (with a bluetooth icon beside it??)
You'll experience problems with your display
These devices might not work correctly after the upgrade
Bluetooth Server (with the same bluetooth icon)
Intel Corporation
I'm not inclined to upgrade if it's going to result in problems either with my bluetooth OR my display. Any change that Dell will release updated drivers to address these issues? Other options?

Unfortunately, we have not received any list of systems that Dell will be making drivers for the hardware installed.

I took the free upgrade to win 10 from 8.1. I have a new XPS with Win10 and wanted alignment. This laptop has 8gb mem with 2.2 cpu. Usually I don't usually upgrade but I felt this laptop was compatible. Since my upgrade I have experienced slower function. I'm not that happy about win 10 in general as my XPS had other issues from day one and I had to do a complete OS reinstall. I think I need another reinstall of the XPS because I lost all my One drive connections in file folder and it won't remember log in and pw that I set to remember - little things like that. Others Inspiron 15 issues. The touch pad is awful but I just use a wireless mouse on the right side of the panel. I keep on having wireless network card issues and will drop off forcing me to run trouble shooter or reboot.any comments welcome. I was thinking of rolling back to 8.1.

Hi all,
I was hoping someone could help me diagnose my laptop. Out of no where it will not boot up. The power LED on the power button lights up when I hold it down but the screen stays blank. No other LEDs show, if the power cable is connected then the large LED at the base of the laptop lights up.
If I test the screen by holding ?d? when turning on then the screen switches through multiple colours so I assume the display is fine. I have tried removing the battery and draining the power then re-attaching the battery. I have also tried removing and replacing the RAM.
Can anyone suggest next steps to identify the issue? I feel I may need a new motherboard but want to exhaust all other options first.
Thanks so much!

Hello, I have had my Dell Inspiron 15 7548 since last July and I have just now noticed this screen issue. It is a white spot on the left-middle  area of the screen that looks almost like a smear. It looks almost like some sort of backlight bleed. It is very distracting for me and discourages me from using this laptop. Is there any way to fix this? If it requires me sending my laptop in for repair will it be covered by my warranty (that's still active until this october)? Thanks.

A:Dell Inspiron 7548 Screen Issue

Please reply us with the snapshot of the LCD screen so that we can check and assist you further.
Also, we will have to perform the ‘LCD BIST’ (Built in Self-test) on the computer. Please follow the steps mentioned below to run the “LCD BIST’.

Turn of the computer.
Press and hold down the ‘D’ key on the keyboard and press the Power button.
You will see different colors on the LCD screen. Please check if the issue reoccurs on the screen.

In addition, please connect the system to an external monitor and check if the issue reoccurs.

Hi guys,
I just bought a new Dell Inspiron 7548 with preinstalled Windows 10 Home and when I tried to use the camera it showed me that it is not connected and Skype can't find it. I tried a few more sites to test if it is a Skype problem but it seems to be something with the webcam driver. I didn't had the Imaging devices in the Device manager until I went to the View menu and chose to display all the hidden stuff. Then it appeared, and in the properties section it was saying the same thing, that the camera is probably not connected but it is a built-in integrated camera so I don't thing that is the problem. I uninstalled the Integrated webcam driver and restarted the PC, hoping that it will work as it was mentioned in the Dell troubleshoot webcam instructions that Windows 10 will reinstalled the drivers automatically. This didn't happened. Now I can't even find it under the hidden stuff, it just disappeared. I also scanned for hardware changes but  that also didn't work out. I am with the latest drivers, I checked it with the tool provided online from dell. Does anybody have any suggestions what could be the problem and how to fix it? Just to point out again I just bought the laptop an I never seen the camera working so it might actually be that the camera is broken or not connected right. I am out of suggestions - oh, or probably it is Windows 10? Is there somebody with Windows 10 got the camera to work? Thanks in advance. If any more informatio... Read more

I have Dell Inspiron 15 7548, recently I am experiencing an issue in which my laptop screen suddenly becomes fuzzy with pink and green horizontal lines and the screen becomes not responsive. I have to restart the laptop to use it again. This issue appears randomly without any warning and i am getting to much irritated with this.
My laptop screen is 4K with touch support.

A:Dell Inspiron 15 7548 fuzzy screen come and go

Does the system overheat? Does this happen with or without the adapter connected? Are there any bluescreens / system crashes? What applications are you using when the issue occurs?
Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/2dl5Cp4- reinstall the video drivers and check.
If the issue is not resolved, run a stress test on the system - http://dell.to/1NEc1Y4
Connect an external monitor and check if the issue is seen on both external display and the LCD.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.
Run the LCD bist - Turn off the system and press and hold the "D" key + power button to turn on the system and it should run the LCD built in self test - see this link for more info - http://dell.to/1SkXNrG - swivel the screen and check if the issue reoccurs.
If the system is under warranty, Please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name, Phone#, Address and Email). If there is no warranty, then you could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call - http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ

My laptop wont change from CPU to GPU.
Any suggestions on a fix would be great, tried many theories that have worked for others.
I believe my laptop is supposed to have Radeon M270, however AMD automatically find your software downloads the M265. I've tried to make this work but I've ran out of options.

I've gone to Device manager, disabled the gpu, and updated so it updates to M270, however then when I right click to view the AMD settings I get an error that my software is not supported?
(When on M265) I've got my global application settings on maximize performance.
Steam is also on high performance
I've messed about with all the settings within the AMD radeon settings, trying to find optimal performance however I still find games are running on fps 4, even when the game settings are all on very low.
I've also used the command Prompt (Admin) fix that has been mentioned on various forums.

I have an Inspiron 7548 laptop with two USB 3.0 ports (one with PowerShare) and one USB 2.0 port.
I have tried charging my iPhone 6 in "Low Power Mode" with an Apple cable at several instances from all the 3 ports and found the following average rates of charging (with 3G ON and almost no usage):
USB 2.0 port - ~1%/2minUSB 3.0 port - ~1%/2minUSB 3.0 port with PowerShare - ~1%/1min
My question is - is it possible to achieve similar charging current on the other USB 3.0 port? Since USB 3.0 is capable of providing up to 900mA, can I somehow get it to pump this much current by some driver/software manipulation?
Extra information:
I am aware of some adapters which can force higher current out of a USB port - is it possible that they may actually damage the port? (assuming that the port is not configured to provide higher current as per its driver)
While I found an average of ~1%/2min for charging on all USB ports (two 3.0 and one 2.0 with PowerShare) on my previous laptop XPS 15 L502X, in Inspiron I can distinctly see one port charging the phone at twice the rate.
I suppose that only one port is providing 900mA, while others give only 500mA. I checked the controller for the ports on HWiNFO64 and found all the 3 ports coming from the same controller USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller (on Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.0 (Microsoft)), which also happens to have Wi-Fi adapter, touchscreen adapter installed on it, as per HWiNFO64.

So i'm not familiar with this series in that i'm not sure if every version came with true color or not, so assuming yours did the only thing I can think of is it looks like your running windows 10.  If thats the case I do not see any true color driver for windows 10 for your laptop, just for windows 8.1.  While normally windows 8.1 drivers will work sometimes they do not so it could be a driver problem with windows 10.

removing the hard drive,

Just got my new laptop today, and of course first thing I do is open it up and put in an SSD. Well it looks like the "holder" that you put the drive in before screwing it into the actual laptop is warped... Photo attached. If you look, towards the left of the pic is where the screw is, then the caddy slowly protrudes out, then goes back in closer to the second screw. Do you guys think this is cause for concern (ie will it randomly one day destroy my entire laptop due to the pressure)? Or if I leave it alone should it be fine.

A:Warped HDD caddy Dell Inspiron 15 7548 (7000 series)

You could take it out, take the drive out, then use light finger pressure to straighten it out. From what I can see, it wouldn't cause me any undo concern. If the retaining screw isn't binding I wouldn't worry about it.

Hello everyone,

Both the laptops Dell Inspiron 15R and Dell Inspiron 7548 came with 6 GB of RAM. I'd like to upgrade it to at least 12 GB by replacing the 2 GB dimms in both laptops with 8 GB dimms.

Was wondering whether it is safe and okay to combine different memory modules from different manufacturers.

I'm also leaving the US next week and so would prefer getting RAM that's more reliable and wouldn't mess up the laptops.

Could you guys please recommend which ones you'd get? I've bought Samsung and Crucial in the past and didn't have any issues.

Here's the existing RAM information from CPU–Z:

Inspiron 15R:

Inspiron 7548:

Based on the above information, could you please recommend the sticks that you would get, preferably from Amazon?

Dell's upgrade page for Inspiron 15R recommends this one:

Dell 8 GB Certified Replacement Memory Module for Select Dell Systems - 1600MHz LV SODIMM : Memory | Dell which is 1600 MHz.

So can I get this one for that laptop: Kingston Technology 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L (PC3-12800) 1.35V Non-ECC CL11 SODIMM Intel Laptop Memory KVR16LS11/8 at Amazon.com

This would match the manufacturer of the existing stick (Kingston).

Dell's upgrade page recommended the same stick for Dell Inspiron 7548 as well.

Since I wasn't able to locate Hyundai's 8GB stick, is it okay if I get Kingston or Crucial's stick:

Kingston Technology 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L (PC3-12800) 1.35V Non-ECC CL11 SODIMM Intel Laptop Memory KVR16LS11/8 at Amazon.com

Ever since I upgraded my laptop to Windows 10, this SoftThinks Agent Service is taxing my HDD to 100% slowing things down.
This is related to Dell Backup and Recovery software. I can kill this service and that's that but every-time I start up, this happens.
As for sleep mode, I will come back to my laptop and raise the lid, hit the keys, move the mouse, nothing. I hit the power button and nothing. So I hold the power button and then hit it to boot up, so clearly there are issues in relation to sleep mode and something shutting it off. (others have posted the same)
I installed all newest Intel drivers on your site and I read 1 user stated to uninstall Intel Rapid Storage, which I did. Intel Management Engine remains as I am still trying to troubleshoot. Are you testing all these new drivers you are putting out for download? Do I need to go back to Win8.1, your site said my laptop could be upgraded.
Please advise and "do the needful".

A:Inspiron 3542 - Win10 upgrade issues - SoftThinks Agent Service utilizing 100% HDD & sleep mode/power issues

same thing here as far as the power issues. you must remove the 2 other intel things that were installed along with the Intel rapid storage
intel security assist
intel management engine something or other (cant remember the exact name)
i still have the intel graphics and chipset drivers installed without any problems. it was just the intel rapid storage stuff that caused all the power , sleep mode problems..

I have removed the original Win10 and reinstalled from scratch Win8.1 Pro on my Dell xps 13 9350. I have downloaded all the possible drivers from the official "Dell driver download" page and run them all in the order suggested. Also the BIOS is updated. However, there are still several devices not recognized: 1. There is no Win8.1 driver for the trackpad. The one of Win10 is not compatible with Win8.1, so the trackpad is currently recognized in the device manager as PS/2-compatible. Moral: the scroll function does NOT work!! 2. Under "other devices" I get two "PCI data acquisition and signal processing controller" icons and one "unknown device" flagging "there are no compatible drivers for this device" 3. After installing the latest drivers (February updates -not sure which one in particular created the problem) I now get also under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" and icon with "Standard SATA AHCI Controller" flagging "this device cannot start. A:Dell xps 13 9350 downgrade windows 8.1, trackpad not working and other issues.

Hope this helps for items 1 and 2, not sure about item 3...
For item 1, have you tried using the Windows 7 touchpad driver?  Download link below.  When you run the downloaded Dell Update Package, choose Extract (not Install), and create a folder to extract the files.  Then right click Setup.exe, choose Properties, then click the Compatibility tab, and then check the Compatibility box and choose Windows 7.  This should allow the driver to install successfully.
For item 2, you'll need to install the Serial I/O driver, which isn't listed for Windows 8.1, but you can find it in the Dell Driver Pack for Windows 8.1, link below also.  You'll need something like 7zip to extract the CAB file, but you'll find the driver buried in there.  Once you have the driver pack extracted to a folder, you can go into Device Manager, then right click the PCI Data Acquisition device, then choose Update Driver. Then choose Browse, and point it to the extracted folder and make sure include subfolders is checked.  The driver should then install.

I have recently upgraded my Dad's Inspiron 15-5547 laptop by replacing the standard HDD with a Samsung 850 EVO SSD drive.
Having swapped out the drive and installed Windows 10 everything seemed in place, however, the system soon started to have issues.
The power button became unresponsive, some times making it impossible to turn on the system, other times finally doing so after 8+ presses.
This behaviour made the system very frustrating to use.
I removed the SSD and reinstalled the original HDD and the system and power button then work flawlessly again.
Is there any known compatibility issue between the Inspiron 15-5547 and Samsung Evo 850?
Are there any other reasons why installing the SSD would lead to issues like this?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the appropriate section for this, but I'm working on a friend's Dell inspiron 15-3521 that has been unusable for about a month. The laptop is about 3 years old and came with Windows 8 and he tried to upgrade to Windows 10 when prompted. After the "upgrade", the laptop would boot correctly into Windows 10 about 1 out of 5 attempts and when it did boot correctly, it would ultimately crash without much explanation. He wanted to downgrade all the way to Windows 7(which I have a legitimate copy of) so I booted into a Linux Mint Live distro, formatted the drive, and installed Windows 7. After the installation, Windows 7 booted up fine but was incredibly slow and still basically unusable. Now, after restarting, the computer either restarts at the login screen of Windows 7 or freezes on a black screen after entering login info. Initially I thought maybe the ram was bad and was just running out of memory, but the Linux memtest comes back clean. Now I suspect that it could be a bad hard drive, but it would be great to get more opinions before I continue guessing.

So I've been having this issue with the trackpad on my Inspiron 13 where it has a really hard time telling the difference between right click and left click.  Like I try to right-click on something but it ends up left-clicking so I have to do it again to get it to work.
I also have an issue where I try to regular (left) click on something but it ends up moving the mouse instead.
Is there a way I can get a regular trackpad swapped in?  This integrated one is a real pain.

Hi there!

I have a Dell Inspiron n4010, and recently my speakers stopped working. At first, it was just one of them, but later the other stopped working too. Everything in the OS seems to be right, the drivers are installed, etc... So I decided to open it so I could see if the connection on the motherboard is alright. And they were, so couldn't solve that.

Anyway, the big problem came later. When I plugged the three ribbons attached from the top panel to the motherboard (one for the powering button, another one for the keyboard, and the last one for the trackpad), and put all the screws back in, the laptop didnt boot up. So after playing around a bit to try different possibilities, I realized that is only when I connect the trackpad ribbon that the computer doesn't boot. If it's unplugged, there is no problem.

Searching for a solution I found this on another post on /vb/topic37680 (Add techspot.com at the beginning and .html at the end, cause I cannot post links).

But that works for a different model, and implies breaking a sensor, which I'd rather not doing. So I would like to know if anyone knows the solution to this, or if there is anybody out there with the same problem and had success fixing it. Thanks and regards!

You have probably shorted or damaged one or more of the ribbon cables wires. Did you release the ribbon cables properly by releasing any plastic clips, or just by pulling on them? A Windows re-install might have brought the sound back to life. An errant Windows update might have caused this loss of sound. Now you have really messed things up

It should not be that way - contact Dell to return the system for replacement.

After a recent Windows update (I am using Windows 10), I have found that there is now acceleration on my built-in trackpad input. That is, the distance my on-screen cursor moves for a given amount of movement of my finger depends on the speed at which I move my finger. This is undesirable.
Normally, mouse acceleration is caused by enabling the "Enhance pointer precision" setting in the mouse settings section of the control panel. However, I have this setting disabled.
Is there any way I can disable this mouse acceleration? Thank you in advance.

Hello again Seveners!

I come to you with yet MORE computer problems! Hopefully you brainboxes can find out what's up this time, too!

Okay - so my friend has asked me to try and fix his Dell Inspiron N5040. I have tried, but to no avail, and am seeking 7-support!

The built in trackpad is playing silly buggers. When the computer has logged in (and Windows in finalising the loading of programs), left clicking with the mouse causes the right click menu to open. This is rather annoying. After about 5 minutes, the problem goes away and is fine.... for about 5 minutes! It then keeps trying to right click everything, makes me unable to click on the Start button or any other Taskbar items for that matter. The only way to make it work again is by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete and then pressing escape. It will then happily allow me to left click again - as if by magic!

The same thing happens if I try and use an external USB mouse, although it is a lot more reliable than the built in trackpad.

I do have a technical brain, so I have thought and tried the following. Hopefully you can see something I overlooked!

- Checked that the trackpad wasn't disabled - but no - the trackpad still allows me to move, just clicking with the buttons wont work. I will also add that it stops be being able to click using the touchpad rather than the buttons, too.

- Uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers. - Same problem.

- Tried to update the drivers - Marked as up to date.

If I had to make totally wild guess, I would speculate there is another program running that takes control of the pad. I would boot in a safe mode to see if that helps, if not I would try to look at all services running and disable some. Usually there is brief description to give you an idea if it's safe to disable. I don't see virus scan in your list, I would start with that.

When we see pictures like you have, it is nice but we may not understand the circumstances when the picture was taken.
So, why is the Windows Boot Manager showing as Disabled in the pictures.
Why did you disable Secure Boot?

Hello all,

Recently I have been having problems with the trackpad on my laptop. The trackpad will freeze every five minutes for a few seconds. Once my trackpad freezes for the first time after startup I am no longer able to scroll. I have tried to update my drivers but I am unsure if I was succesful. Maybe I should try to uninstall and reinstall the rivers. Any help with this problem would be much appreciated, it is very annoying.

Thank you!

Hi Flipthedog
Thanks for writing to us.
We would suggest to uninstall and then reinstall the touchpad drivers from our support.euro.dell.com--enter tag#--submit--choose drivers and downloads--select the operating system--install the driver from the list.
If its still the same, please check in safemode on the functionality.
Also if the issue started recently, you can try doing a system restore and observe.
Do provide us your system tag#, email address and name via private message,by clicking on my name

Hello!  I bought this device just yesterday evening, and in about 12 hours usage I have had this problem about 3 times: 1) The trackpad slows down2) Next, it'll apparently start detecting the wrong gestures, like multifingered gestures when I use only one finger, or the inverse, or else it starts clicking when I'm not putting on much pressure, etc.3) Finally - and this is the worst part - the trackpad stops detecting pressure in about 60% of it's central area...4) I restart the system and everything is perfect again for a while. What should I do? Should I return the product? I already searched for updates in the software, but everything was fine and up to date. Thanks for your time!
