x220 and x230 not booting at all

Q: x220 and x230 not booting at all

Hey again, This is my third thread on this topic. So I had an x220 which did not boot anything after a BIOS update and I assumed that the problem will be solved by buying a new laptop (x230) at the nearest shop. So I went and did, I tried my USB drive at the store and it did boot up. The HDD they wanted to sell it with booted up as well, everything like a charm. I came home, and tried my other HDD (from the x220) and while it could see it, the same problem arose. I could not boot up the HDD (even though my main PC can) and now I could not boot up the USB as well. Does anyone have an idea what might be the problem? Is it the HDD, or is it possible that the Thinkpad sees it as bootable but unable to boot? Then why would the USB do not boot up as well? Thanks in advance. Getting really anxious about all this.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: x220 and x230 not booting at all

Mods, please close this. The problem was bad memory, one of the newly purchased ones were corrupted for some reason. Still showed up in the BIOS and the diagnostics did not find anything. In the x220 the system got bricked as well, so that was mostly a goner. The main thing was the memory, it simply did not boot with a bad memory even though there was usable, good memory. Thanks for everyone who helped me out. Cheers,John

Hi all, I'd like to say first this is an awesome forum for Lenovo owners and everyone seems to get answers .I just bought a used X230 (i5) (with OEM 8GB RAM) recently to replace my X200s. Can't wait to upgrade some stuff So I did some searches here and I got some answers about max RAM.  Seems the X220 is capable of 16GB. My gf has the X220 (i7) currently has 2x4GB G.Skill (upgraded right away when it was brand new) . To save a little bit of $ I'd like to buy 4x8GB RAM 1600 for both our laptops. 1) Is it realistic to do this?2) Can the X220 utilize 1600?  3) Is there a "right RAM" that will work for both laptops?4) What CAS, Latency and Voltage should I get that is stable?5) Which brand works well? Was thinking of G.Skill (had good experience with them). Note: At the end of the day if it doesn't work then I'll get them separately.   Off topicHow do I get to make my signature work properly? Do I need to code it? I don't know how to code

I have an X220 that recently just had the warranty expire on it, and now the motherboard is shot.  I was wondering if logistically, I could buy an X230, and simply install my old solid state harddrive from the X220, and would the computer function?  If possible, that would be a lot easier than taking the hard drive, having someone back it up, and then reinstalling all of the software and files on the new computer?  Thanks in advance for any help!

A:X220 Hard Drive to New X230

It should work fine. I would run ThinkVantage System Update in case there's some hardware on the X230 that wasn't on the X220, but apart from that you should be good to go.

Hi,

in the last 2 month I read quite a lot about eGPU and fortunately(at least I thought so..) I have a x230 notebook which usually works fine with eGPUs and also in some german forums there where quite a lot people with setups combining the parts I have right now.

Those are the PE4L-EC060A v2.1b Adapter to connect my new Zotac Geforce GTX 970 through the expressCard Slot in my X230.
My X230 has 16gb of ram and I thought that might be the problem but I have also updated the BIOS to the newest version 2.62 which should have solved the problem. I also tried with removing one bar of 8gb ram but still does not work. If I plug the expressCard adapter into my notebook it recognizes the card and i can install the drivers. But if I reboot, it hangs up during boot process before my grub loader shows up (I also tried with an usb fresh installed windows 7) and hangs there without any error or anything... I heard that if I start with the card inside it is normal that it restarts after 1 second because of the TOLUD Table which initializes again so these setups would work. But even then it does not work and freezes.. I also took a video of the booting process:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezwE--G3GtY

If I, like some guys recommended, plug the card in only when grub shows up, it boots but then I get the "famous" code 12 error.

Could it be because the zotac gtx 970 has 4gb ram?

I really dont know what to do anymore

I also did some ... Read more

I have an X230 i5 processor with a 1 TB SSD and I recently picked up a X230 with a i7 processor and a much smaller hard disk.  Can I just swap my big SSD into the new X230 (moving that version of Windows 7 Pro) and then install the smaller hard disk (with its version of Windows 7 Pro) into the i5 machine. (Will be swapping the memory so the i7 has the 16 GB and the i5 has 8 GB).  I know that if they were completely different computers this would not work, but since both are X230 will it work?  I'd rather not have to restall all the programs if I can avoid it!

Officially, 8GB is the maximum amount of memory that the X220 is supported for, i.e., tested and verified to work with.

That said, I have 16GB (28GB DDR3 SO-DIMMs) installed in mine and it seems to work fine without any problems.

Good day.

Pretty much all of the steps are outlined in the HMM: https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/0a60739_04.pdf

Essentially, you'll need to remove the LCD, pull the hinge screws, carefully lift the antennae tapes, and then reinstall all the parts into the replacement lid. Section 2010 is a good starting point.

Hi All,  With reference to https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X230-Laptop-4G-LTE-in-the-UK/m-p/2258754#M681... - trying to find a Lenovo FRU 04W3821 is like trying to find Rocking Horse doodah.... What other options are there for UK based WWAN cards ? i.e. the next best thing ? I'd love to have my x230 be 4G capable, however, I'd settle for a decent, and working 3G.I've got the cables internally - just not the card. I've found one that is being advertised as ... "60Y3255 60Y3279 04W3767" Another as "60Y3297"Another as "04W3786, 60Y3297" - stated as same model. And finally - a " 04W3767" I am not 100% sure about GPS or not - I use Linux, not Windows, so don't know if that would work, I guess, if there is a GPS that works (especially under Linux) then that would be a bonus, not a necessity. TIA K__R

A:Replacing DVD with SSD on X220

Upgrading your system from HDD to SSD is doable and would have an immediate impact, less heat, less noise, fast bootup times, overall one of the best and easiest upgrades - next to adding more RAM, which you might consider. Don't forget you will either need to clone your existing HDD to your new SSD or install the OS fresh, including all your drivers, apps, etc. Make sure you have everything you need before you go erasing your HDD's data - BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP. Youtube is your friend here, there are numerous videos on how to accomplish the upgrade. Now, it may be possible to remove your DVD drive and swap in a second drive (HDD), but this is a very complicated task and requires technical skills you may not have. I would watch a few Youtube videos first and make a determination if you can do it, including, does your system have the needed interface that will allow for a 2.5" SATA HDD, and what about the space itself. Don't forget you will want to seal the opening, can you remove the bezel from the DVD drive, maybe customize a cable. Do you feel comfortable taking your laptop fully apart -- everything, if it's required? Can you put it back together and not have extra parts? Some of the hardware is delicate, and small, screws can get lost in your carpet when dropped on the floor! If more storage is what you need maybe an external drive would work better. Using a USB to SATA cable plugged into an HDD, or external enclosure may be a better option??? IIRC 2.5" drives... Read more

A:My X220 is really overheating Please Help!

Welcome to the forum!

Difficult to say why after a repasting the temps are that high, let's give a look at a checkist I personally follow when repasting my ThinkPads:

Was the old paste properly cleaned from both heastink and CPU die? (Use 100% alcohol or Isopropyl for that)
Are the fan blades clean? First block the fan to prevent it from spinning and apply compressed air from the heatsink and from the top of the blades until you're sure is clean
Apply a very small amount of paste and distribute a very thin layer over the CPU
Is the heatsink sitting flat on the CPU?
Make sure to properly tight the screws
Do the heatpipes look bent or damaged?

I have no experience with the thermal compound you used, I normally use Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut and my X220's don't overheat, when your temps get to 99C, what applications are you using?

alankoh, unfortunately, if you haven't recovery media with WinPE environment (didn't make it from Rescue&Recovery tool) you can't recover laptop by simple step. Or you have to have Factory_Recovery media. Also, partition Lenovo_Recovery must be Q;.Nevertheless, you can do it:1. find out imagex.exe tool on other Lenovo laptop, within "C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\Factory Recovery" folder or in MS Windows AIK2. make usb bootable media with Windows 7 environment (WinPE as an example), copy imagex.exe on that media3. boot from new media, in cmd line (re)assign partitions as follow:system_drv as S;, Windows_OS as C;, Lenovo_Recovery as Q:4. type and execute the following string from cmd line:imagex.exe /apply /verify Q:\factoryrecovery\Cdrivebackup.wim 1 C:\You'll get partition C: as from the factory. Also you can restore hidden partition system_drv:imagex.exe /apply /verify Q:\factoryrecovery\Sdrivebackup.wim 1 S:\5. boot laptop as usually, Install Lenovo Rescue&Recovery tool

Hi Mim1234,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I am sorry to hear that you are facing the issue with no power on your ThinkPad X230.

Remove the AC adapter, system battery and CMOS (coin) battery (under the palm rest) for about 30 seconds.
Reattach the CMOS battery, palm rest, AC adapter and system battery.
Power your ThinkPad system ON.
If it powers on successfully, then update the BIOS and Embedded Controller code.
If it did not power on successfully, then have the ThinkPad system board (planar) replaced.

Please let us know the findings after performing the above troubleshooting steps.

Hope to hear back soon!

Hello. I took apart my X220 but forgot to put the DC jack back in. I couldn't find it anywhere (very likely due to cats), so I ordered a new one off of amazon (this one). The new one only came with the jack and cord, but not the little metal plate (also lost) that holds it in place. After I put that in the computer, I plugged it in, but I saw some sparks and quickly pulled it out. So, I'm thinking the part was probably bad, but I figured I'd inquire about another possibility that occurred to me:Does the metal plate do any grounding? Or is it just there to secure the part in place? I'm about to order this one from ebay. This time I looked up the part number and it's a match. I just wanted to make sure that it will be safe to install without the metal plate. Thank you.

Since you used the MS tool, I'll assume you want to boot the flash drive and install in legacy mode.  Try turning off UEFI boot in BIOS if you haven't already.  Probably should set BIOS to defaults first.

If you actually want to to a EUFI install you'll need to prepare the flash drive differently.

Z.

I have been questioining the Sandy Bridge QM67 chipset with my X220 out of concern that I have a possible problen with the machine. The QM67 has 2 SATA III ports and 4 SATA II ports. The hard disk bay has one of the SATA III ports which is where I installed a SSD to improve performane.  The SDXC card reader is SATA connected but I am not sure which port on the QM67 it is wired up to? The Wi-Fi card I suspect is PCI Express 2.0 x1 connected so its not affected? The other slot is mSATA which I discovered a SSD option but with slower SATA II speed. Now noticed there is a bay for a SIM card, so is the WAN card PCI Express connected?

What's the problem exactly? What do you want to perform?

Hi everyone, I have a question about the RAM in the x230. I bought the base 4gb of RAM with the intention of upgrading it myself later. The stock RAM inside is a Samsung model with this serial: m471b5273dh0-cko However, I cannot find this model RAM to put in another identical stick into the open slot. The closest model available is: http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MV-3T4G3/US Do you think these two sticks would be compatible? Did anyone else try a different type/model/amount of RAM? My gut feeling is that 8Gb of RAM would be great, and that 16Gb would be overkill. The other option is just to shell out a few more bucks and buy two pieces of matching RAM. I am considering Cruicals and Cosair Vengence RAM. Let me know what you guys think, Thanks, Jah

hi. if you were to order from Lenovo: http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?...you'd probably get Samsung, Hynix or Nanya, from my experience. most recently, i got Hynix. price may be higher than other places, though. from what i've read, Crucial is good quality, but Corsair may be hit or miss. cheers.

Hi, can I use eDrive on my ThinkPad X220? I confirmed that it has TPM v1.2, but apparently it also needs UEFI Version 2.3.1 (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831627.aspx). My reported "UEFI BIOS Version" is 1.39. Are these numbers comparable (one is Lenovo-specific, one is not, I guess), so that eDrive is not possible on my device? Or how can I find out, which UEFI Version the Lenovo "UEFI BIOS" is based on? And do Opal drives even work on the mSATA slot? I also found this:http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/win8beta_8det8059.txtThe version number is not even close to 2.x and yet it supports eDrive? Could I switch to this BIOS version and use it? Or does 1.39 include the changes of 1.29a, anyway? Thank you for your help!Philipp

Can I use eDrive on my ThinkPad X220?Yes. I use a Crucial MX100 SATA SSD with X220 BIOS 1.29a and eDrive hardware encryption is fully supported in Windows 8.1. Are these numbers comparable? No. How can I find out, which UEFI Version the Lenovo "UEFI BIOS" is based on?This question has been asked several times over the years and so far nobody has offered an answer. And do Opal drives even work on the mSATA slot?I would expect so. The version number is not even close to 2.x and yet it supports eDrive?Correct. As mentioned in the description 1.29a was for beta program support. Features added were for testing and not guaranteed to be supported in subsequent BIOS releases. Could I switch to this BIOS version and use it?Yes, just downgrade to it. Or does 1.39 include the changes of 1.29a, anyway? Not according to the changelog, but as you are already on 1.39, try it for yourself before downgrading to 1.29a. 1.29a works for me so I have no reason to upgrade.
