Scanning an infected OS externally as good as scanning it from it's own OS? [Moved]

Q: Scanning an infected OS externally as good as scanning it from it's own OS? [Moved]

Hi,

If I have a heavily infected OS and I hook it up to a working PC as an external drive and scan it, will the viruses be removed and found as well as if it was scanned directly from the infected OS?

Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I first bought my CanoScan 8800F and set about scanning my old slides I was a bit enthusiastic and scanned at the default resolution. The resulting images, when printed, were poor quality. I have now started re-scanning all 124 slides at 4800dpi (or is it ppi?). The trouble is that when I enhance them or change their sizes Photoshop takes ages to complete the operation. Should I scan at 4800 or 2400 then resize the images to 600 before doing any enhancing? Is there some way to scan slides so that they print at an acceptable resolution but do not involve hours of waiting? I also want to burn the scanned images to a DVD.

Aside form anti mailware bytes, what other good programs are there? I have bit defender as my A.V.

A:What are some really good scanning programs

You'll find there's no single best answer to this. A recent issue of Consumer Reports (I think it was the June issue) had a list of them, but every ranking I've ever seen is different. As I'm sure others will chime in and say, the answer is very subjective. It's like what's the best car. I use the Norton Security Suite which I get free from Comcast on my Windows 7 computers, but I've used the free AVG and Avast as well. On my Windows 8.1 computers, I just use Defender which in Windows 8 has MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) integrated into it. Whenever you mention Norton or McAfee, you usually get a whole lot of varied answers because they've been around since the 80s, and most everybody has an opinion on them; some love them, some hate them. The county I live in uses the commercial Norton product, Symantec Environmental Protection (SEP). YMMV.

Good luck.

You do realise that Zone Alarm has IM and email scanning going on all the time and periodically scans files and internet pages that you are browsing. It doesn't always show up on the ZA icon either (when the magnifying glass comes over the ZA icon)

When I run "sfc /scannow", I get the message to insert the original Windows Xp Professional CD. However, I have XP Home with SP2, which makes Home almost the same as Pro, but I still don't have that CD. It also doesn't accept the SP2 disc.

So I am missing some files, but can't replace them. Do I need to make a Slipstream disc? Does Windows XP + SP1 + SP2 fit on one CD? With sfc /scannow not working I'm pretty much out of options to repair Explorer, other than a full repair.

A:Scanning with sfc /scannow and SP2 doesn't do any good???

This issue occurs when the following .inf files contain an incorrect source media description:
?Fp40ext.inf

I have an HP J4580 All-In-One printer that also scans. The problem is, if I scan more than one (1) sheet, the program does not save them under one (1) scan but saves them as several separate scans. The scanner at work, however, saves scans as one (1) scan which can then easily be sent as an e-mail attachment. Is there a good program that allows scans of several pages to be saved as one (1) scan? (Other embellishments would also be welcome.) Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions/ideas.

Does anyone know of any reliable online reviews or lab tests that rate Comodo Firewall Pro 3.0 (not BOClean or AntiVirus) on its antimalware scanning abilities (and not just for its firewall capabilities), particularly against spyware and adware? If not, do you have any personal feedback on it?

I am asking because I've been testing various security programs (as opposed to a suite) on my machine lately, with the latest versions of ESET NOD32, Comodo and Spyware Doctor (the version without antivirus) currently installed. These have all been given top scores in various lab tests and online reviews I've read. NOD32 was ranked tops by AV-Comparatives for antivirus capabilities, but lags in antispyware/adware capabilities, so I got Spyware Doctor as a secondary proactive measure. But the combination of all three is eating an enormous amount of RAM, and I'd like to drop Spyware Doctor (at least proactively) if NOD32 + Comodo can do a similarly effective job by themselves.

If you know of another firewall (free or not) that is as good as Comodo or better that comes with well reviewed or tested antispyware/adware capabilities, I'll be happy to reconsider my current trial setup. I am in favor of keeping NOD32 Antivirus at this time, so I'm not considering security suites for myself (ESET's suite's firewall is not as highly regarded as its antivirus component from what I recall reading).

Thanks!

I know there are a few sites out there to scan files such as VirusTotal and Jotti, but there's a question regarding this. Is it possible to scan files that's in a quarantine? There's one particular file that I have that I'm guessing is a false positive since it came from one of my programs that I constantly use. I wasn't ever infected or anything, but I'm just wondering since I have a possible false positive that Avast detected as a threat and put into the quarantine.

A:Scanning possible infected files

When an anti-virus or security program quarantines a file and moves it into a virus vault (chest) or a dedicated quarantine folder, that file is essentially disabled and prevented from causing any harm to your system. The quarantined file is usually renamed before moving, safely held there and no longer a threat until you take action to delete it. One reason for doing this is to prevent deletion of a crucial file that may have been flagged as a "false positive" especially if the scanner uses heuristic analysis technology. Heuristics is the ability of a scanning program to detect possible new variants of malware before the vendor can get samples and update the program's definitions for detection. Heuristics uses non-specific detection methods to find new or unknown malware which allows the anti-virus to detect and stop if before doing any harm to your system. The disadvantage to using heuristics is that it is not as reliable as signature-based detection (blacklisting) and can potentially increase the chances that a non-malicious program is flagged as suspicious or infected. If that is the case, then you can restore the file and add it to the exclusion or ignore list.If you're not sure about the file or suspect it may be a "false detection", check your anti-virus user manual or look for documentation, FAQs on the vendor's web site. Some programs have options for submitting a file from the quarantined area directly to the vendor's lab for analysis. Most user ... Read more

Hi all and, first of all, tnx veryone who will help me.

I have my pc infectd for sure, i try to explain you the problem in my bad english:

- my pc is not going slowly or something like that, but "simply" i have every window that i open "flashing" ( i can always see the active window without problems, it stay opened, but i see the menu bar of the active window like flashing, it happens with every kind of window: IE9, Firefox, Crome, Win7 window/folder)

- when i pass the mouse over a program in the win7's program bar, it makes me watch at the iconized programs just for a bit, because of the "flashing issue"... (but i can maximize the iconized program

- when i'm in a folder or just on the desktop and i select one or more files, after a bit it unselect it automatically, always because of the "flashing issue"

I did many scans with Avira free, Kaspersky virus removal tool, mbam, Hijackthis, initially some of them had found something, but then i disinfect all the issues and now they don't find anymore threats, but the issue is still on.

What can i do more?

(i don't have windows install disk)

My daughter informs me that the computer is "infected beyond belief". After I put the drive in an external enclosure and scan it with my anti-virus, are there any other recommended tools I can use so I can transfer/burn the files safely? I'm not that familiar with external drives yet
Thanks

A:Scanning Infected Laptop Drive

Mark,

I'd backup your own system first, who knows what it'll do to you as you connect

I think a good antivirus will catch things on that drive, and then again as you copy so long as you set it to monitor read and write.

The problem is if that drive has some rootkit on it or some other hijacker ...

I'd run more that one AV on that drive and I'd definitely run a-square and on-line Kaspersky and I think NOD32 has an on-line scanner as well. Spyware is minor but superantispyware run might bot be a bad idea.

I really don't know just hinting at possible ways.

This is a very interesting topic. I'll be watching the expert replys!

Hello! I'm using Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, and my computer, somewhat after installing Windows 7 (clean install at that!) earlier this year, has been having problems. Every time I attempt to do any time of scan (Antivirus, CCleaner, adding new files to a program, etc.), my CPU will skyrocket from 60 to 80+ degrees Celsius. This never happened on Vista. I've tried everything I know (doing a full scan using my antivirus, Microsoft Security Essentials, scanning in safe mode using MBAM, Spybot, and MSE, using an online scanner, cleaning my computer) and nothing is showing up as infected.I can't use GMER as it seems that the software will not work in 64-bit. So, I'll copy-paste the things that came from DDS only.EDIT: Couple other things to note:I use to have a problem with one of the svchost.exe files where it would slowly -- and randomly -- use up almost all of my physical memory (nearly 100% of it) and I would have to Ctrl-Alt-Delete the issue away each time it did it. However, when I installed this program called Soluto, that problem went away.I also can't get Microsoft Security Essentials to boot up when I start my computer. Hi,

Any help here would be much appreciated.

A friend has asked me to take a look at their PC after a new new anti-virus program appeared and started asking him to pay for it.

Windows XP Home SP 3, Multiple user accounts, Macafee was installed but doesn't run now.

Booting into windows normally the background is overlayed with a message stating "YOUR SYSTEM IS INFECTED", then "Antivirus 2010" starts up. Some browser sessions seem to be redirected too.
Stopped these appearing by disabling some questionable entries in MSConfig, but this only a part of the problem.

Tried booting in Safemode, Background OK & Antivirus 2010 did not run (before MSConfig changes). PC does not seem to be behaving badly in safe mode and no obvious processes are running.

Installed MalwareBytes & Spybot initially, when trying to run either, the apps start but once scanning starts the applications are terminated quickly. Once terminated the file permissions are changed blocking access to run the application again. HijackThis behaves the same.

I managed to get Panda Active scan to complete a quick scan and it found: Tracking application:pskill.exe and Virus:TrjCI.A

Not sure what to try next so I've worked through your guide...

I ran DDS.scr and the logs are embedded and attached as suggested.
GMER would not run initially renamed and tried again. log attached.

I'm posting this from a clean PC and can get a windows disk if required.

Should one be scanning for viruses and malware in SafeMode always? I have Norton 360 which run while my computer is on but, it does not block malware. I got infected with AV Security Suite and with instruction from Bleeping Computer to remove it but, the malware kept coming back. I finally went into SafeMode and did a complete scan with Malwarebytes and Spybot and was able to remove the malware. Should I also make it a habit to scan weekly?

A:Scanning

Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode designed to start Windows with minimal drivers and running processes to diagnose problems with your computer. This means some of the programs that normally run when Windows starts will not run. Why use safe mode? The Windows operating system protects files when they are being accessed by an application or a program. Malware writers create programs that can insert itself and hide in these protected areas when the files are being used. Using safe mode reduces the number of modules requesting files to only essentials which make your computer functional. This in turn reduces the number of hiding places for malware, making it easier to find and delete the offending files when performing scans with anti-virus and anti-malware tools. In most cases, performing your scans in safe mode speeds up the scanning process. Why not use safe mode? Some security tools like anti-rootkit scanners (ARKs) and programs with anti-rootkit technology use special drivers which are required for the scanning and removal process. These tools are designed to work in normal mode because the drivers will not load in safe mode which lessens the scan's effectiveness. Other security tools are optimized to run from normal mode where they are most effective. For example, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is designed to be at full power when malware is running so safe mode is not necessary when using it. In fact, MBAM loses some effectiveness for detection and removal when used in safe m... Read more

hi,
I ve got an average, run of the mill scanner
it gives great results, but Ive noticed
sometimes the skin tones come out a bit redder than
I would like.

Maybe the paper has something to do with this
eg magazine or newspaper.

Anyway, Im wondering, is there better equipment out
there, maybe more professional.

I want top quality scans, or as good as possible,
If you re going to the trouble of scanning pics it s silly to accept second best.

Looking at my scanner , its so basic, I can t even
see a name on it

The controls via scanner and camera wizard are very
basic too with just colour and brightness to adjust

on slideing scales.

Surely there must be something better out there

It would be interesting to get an opinion or
advice from someone who is into scanning and getting
top results

thanks in advance

Hi I am just needing a bit of help on this matter. I have AVG to run my scanning but I am wanting to know if it has to scan all of my files on my pc or just the ones that are downloaded through IE and temp internet files. Does this make sense to anyone? When my pc does the scanning it takes like 3 hours to complete because I have many files on here. I'm not advanced enough in PC lingo to understand it all but I am assuming the only things that can get "infected" are either the ones downloaded or loaded on pc from another source like zip drives, etc. Any help or links to check much appreciated. Thank you.

A:AVG scanning

Any file can be infected - you need to scan it all

do this before scanning

DownLoad EasyCleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/download414.html

Use the clear files and Unnecessary files buttons – I do not recommend
using the Duplicates files button as many dupes are there on purpose.

Not all files will delete – that is normal.

In the unnecessary button I check the top 4 entries

Empty the trash and then scan

So... hi
It's been a while since I've really posted. Had nothing to contribute really. But recently I've had something in mind; what if~ I'm scanning with my usual stuff (antivirus, malware scanner and others), and it's all clear from there. But I feel like there's something wrong with the system? (A few hints of lag here and there where it shouldn't, I just visited a new site, I just downloaded a program from the internet)
What should one do to be extra sure? And if there's a post about this already I'm sorry, just wanted your guys feedback and if you've ever felt the same paranoia lol.

can i scan a .exe to find out if it is safe to run?

A:scanning .exe

If you asking if you can scan an exe program, then yes, if your antivirus allows it you can use the right click to do an on-demand scan of an individual file, whether the file is a .txt, .pdf, .avi, .jpeg as long as the file exists, seeing as avs can scan corrupted files it will be able to scan it, and if you have an av like comodo or avast, or norton you can run it in a virtualized environment called "sandboxing"

As the title says, after I turned off my Anti-virus software, dds.scr will not scan the computer. It is on my desktop. Please advise.

A:dds.scr not scanning

Please note, this is just to assist you in trying to get logs. I currently have as many open topics as I can effectively handle, so please don't post the logs here.

What OS is this?

What happens when you attempt to run DDS? Does a command window open, then close? Not open at all? Open but no progress indicated?

Delete your existing version of DDS, and download fresh copy from one of these links.

here, here

Let me know if that works.

When carrying out a scan I always opt for using Malwayrebytes Anti Malware in Quick scan mode or Full scan mode because Microsoft Security Essentials is so slow. Will this be equally effective at picking up any nasties. I still have Security Essentials as my first defence.

When i scan my computer with a anti virus macfee. It takes ages to scan. It scan one to 5 item a time

What does that.mean
And why so slow. It used to scan fast

Does that mean my hard drive is slowing down. I have ran i defrag last 30 days.

A:scanning

The scanning speed is usually associated with system performance. If you have multiple applications open at the same time as the scan, it will slow down significantly. The newer versions of Mcafee eventually require more resources than the previous iterations. I suggest thus that you close any unnecessary applications and try scanning again.

I have some garden equipment manuals that I need to scan but when I scan them, details on the black and white photos do not come through clearly.

Most are so black or blurred that details such as the location of a nut or bolt are not visible. The text scans just fine.

I am scanning at 600 dpi in the "line art" on a Microtek i800 scanner but my HP 6100 scanner does the same thing. This is the mode they recommend for best black and white scanning.

Is there some way to get more details to show?

Thanks

I know there is a scanning app at the Windows store and also found one there specifically for Brother printers but these don't have features I used to have through my Brother MFC-5840CN before moving from Windows Vista to 8.1. Has anyone found any free or not-too-awfully-expensive apps or programs to do this?

Note that I somehow utilized an old driver on my first Windows8.1 64-bit computer but, after getting a new one recently, I haven't been able to duplicate that. HELP!
