Q: P50 Reduce Brightness Hotkey not working after hyb...

I shut down my laptops once every week; they're either in sleep mode or hybernating. My P50 is currenly running Windows 7 Pro with all the drivers installed. I have changed bios settings such that the function keys behave as function keys and only act as media keys (or whatever they're called) when pressed in combination with the Fn key. All hotkeys work as they are intended to.However, resuming from hybernation causes only the reduce brightness key (Fn + F5) to stop performing although all other hotkeys work as they should. Pressing the F5 key by itself works normally; its just the Fn + F5 combination that doesn't work.Anyone experiencing this ?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I bought this laptop used with Vista on it and the LCD brightness control wont work. The Brihtness is set at default level which is tolerable but non the less i cannot adjust it brighter or less. I reinstalled Vista and installed XP media center edition and still cannot get the brightness to adjust. I have installed all of the toshiba drivers for this notebook including the recent ACPI bios and hotkey application. I am currently on XP MCE.
If anyone has any ideas to what could be wrong i would glady appreciate it. I have been at this for a few days now and no answers not even from the Toshiba site.

Thanks

A:Brightness Control Hotkey No Working On Toshiba P105

I assume this is the "push the Fn button and another key" thingie? If so, check to ensure that the Fn key works by pressing it and one of the other functions to see if that works.

Then test the key that you use to adjust brightness - without using the Fn key. Does that key also perform it's designated function?

This'll let you determine if it's an error with the keyboard.

Hi I was wondering if there was a way to bind a key to increase/decrease brightness of my laptop screen.

I can use the regular FN+Fnkey combo but I am using an external USB keyboard so it would be easier to use a non FN key combo.
I tried reading the scan codes of the FN+F6 key but I couldn't get any, so I can't remap it with a tool like AutoHotkey.

Also, since I have the slider thing in Control Panel > Power Options, this seems doable with a software.

Last note. I do not want a 'screen dimmer' program that does not actually dim the LEDs behind the screen.

Thanks for your input!

Hallo

my laptop is very very bright ,somehow this is one of the simple things i have not yet learned in vista. I even find my screen to bright when it's in cordless mode or power saver mode.

A:how to reduce the screen brightness in vista?

That's usually controlled by two hotkeys on the keyboard, usually using the Fn key and one of the F keys. On my HP, it's Fn+F7 and Fn+F8.
They should have symbols similar to these-
Should be shown in your User Guide, check Start | Help and Support, see if there is a link for User Guides.

You can also set Brightness for AC and Battery mode here:
Control Panel | (Mobile PC) | Power Options
Click the Change plan settings link under the selected plan, there will be two sliders to set screen brightness.

Since updating my HP Pavillion 64 bit to Windows 8.1, I have been unable to use an HDMI cable or reduce the computer brightness. I figured it would be a simple fix: restore to before the update, and wait for the bugs to be worked out. However, every time I attempt to access the control panel to perform a system restore, the entire OS freezes. Can someone help me resolve this?

Update: I tried to power on my computer just now to no avail. Stayed on the HP loading screen for 30 min.

A:Cannot Reduce Brightness Use HDMI or Control Panel w/8.1

Sounds like a Hard Drive issue, first things first, try checking your whole hard drive. Download Hiren's Boot CD from my link below, burn it and boot to it. Go into Dos Programs and you'll see Hard Drive Tools, pick the tool for your brand hard drive and run a full scan on the surface. You can also try GWscan, which can do both Seagate and WD drives, look for "read element failure" because that error will cause that 30 minute non-boot in some cases.

Sometimes a bad or corrupted spot on the HD will cause all kinds of other apparently unrelated and insane problems, so check the disk before doing anything else.

If you have an SSD drive in there, then do not do any of this, you will have to use the tool for the drive made by whoever made it, or simply so a CHKDSK, you can do that from Hiren's using Mini XP, it's better to do it from there rather than let Windows 8 do it, especially in the state it is in now.

Hi michelewjy,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

I recommend you go to the laptop manufacturer's web site and find the drivers, firmware, and/or software appropriate to your graphics card and your monitor and your version of Vista and download them and update your system with the revised versions. Let's see if that helps. This may also be related to the SFC problem in your other thread - so I will check especially for anything that seems to apply to this issue.

I hope this helps. If not, post back and we'll try something different.

Good luck.

A:Satellite S5200-903 Hotkey Function (Fn+F7/F6) Monitor Brightness

For this old notebook models the whole thing works a little bit different as on new models. Now you have one package that contains all necessary stuff for FN functionality.
On old notebooks like your Satellite 5200 you must install several different tools to get this FN functionality, not brightness control only.

So, to make all this easier I recommend you to check Installation instructions for Satellite 5200 and install all missing stuff. Please follow the installation order.

If you still need help let us know.

I want to reduce brightness of screen. NOT whole screen but only white pixels of screen.

Or a software that can force the graphic card to show grey or light grey or any other color instead of white. And all those pixels in screen that has other color remains unchanged. Is there any software available for such purpose? Or is it impossible to make such software? so i stop searching

I have windows 7, 32 bit

A:Reduce brightness of Screen (Not whole screen)

White is created by every component colour (i.e. Red, Green & Blue) being displayed at maximum brightness.

If you reduce the brightness of White, every other colour will (by definition) be less bright.

I must have set a windows system hotkey?

I thought it might have come from windows media player (I'm running version 11) but I cannot find any setting of f/8 in the WMP menus.

anyone have a guess how I set this? and how to turn it off?

I have tried installing a later version the hotkey does not work on this either, so I put on an earlier image (made last week) I had and the hotkey worked fine, ran windows update, and it stopped working.

I did the same with my new computer, but it doesn't work.

On my laptop when I hit the right alt key, the language would change as shown in the image above.

On my new computer when I hit right alt I hear the Windows exclamation sound and nothing happens.

I have a Lenovo Edge 2 (one of the Flex Series) that has been working great for the past 10 months.  I usually use the mouse and turn of the touchpad so I don't accidentally move the cursor while typing.  On this machine, the F6 key enables/disables the touchpad.NORMALLY:  a notification comes up briefly on the screen when F6 is pressed (either a diagram of the touchpad, or a diagram with a diagonal line across the touchpad); there is a "live" icon in the lower right hand tray of the display that indicates when the touchpad is disabled.PROBLEM:  Yesterday evening an automatic Windows 10 update occured, and the touchpad could no longer be disabled (the notification came up, but the touchpad worked even when the notifcation indicated that it should be disabled); also, the "live" icon was gone.  TEMPORARY FIX: I uninstalled the Windows 10 update, and resinstalled the Synaptics driver for the touchpad (from the Lenovo website), and everything is back to normal.  I have prevented automatic updates by making my internet connection "metered", but I work in many places, and use different networks, and don't want to have to keep all of them "metered".MY QUESTION:  Any ideas what this update is doing to mess up my touchpad, and how to fix it? (I would like to allow the updates)?

Pressing the "Fn" key while pressing the lock screen key Neither of these things made it work. The key is not physically broken - if I press it in certain contexts (such as when the Desktop is showing) I get a Windows "ding" sound (the same way you get if you press any other key Windows doesn't recognize at the Desktop). For some reason the system just doesn't seem to know what to do with it, even with Lenovo Hotkey Features Integration installed. This is a brand-new install of Windows 10 on a laptop I just bought (used), so I cannot say whether or not the key worked in the past. Hello,

Now that windows 7 has been around for a while, my friend has maanged to install it on the laptop, since it can use vista drivers.
Ive added uk extended keyboard to the standard list (which was uk keyboard and some other thingy I dont know). I also set default keyboard to extended.
Now if I want to do a letter with a circumflexy, i type ALTGR+ 6, let go of all keys, then press the required letter. this works.

But for some reason, tilde doesnt work (did in Vista). Normally, AltGr + # (tilde is on # key) followed by required letter. Tried using shift, just in case, but no joy.
Tilde works fine by itself (ie shift #)

OK Thanking you all for Any and all ideas

Wireless is turned on in the BIOS. In the device manager it appears as working and enabled. The computer is in every way set up to use it, I just can't get the key to do anything so i can't turn it on. Weirdly, I can turn bluetooth on and off separately, just not wireless.

I've updated the driver for the wireless but the hotkey driver isn't anywhere on the site. I've tried searching it elsewhere but couldn't find it for windows 7. Can I use the XP one, or one from a different Toshiba model? The T130 section just returns no results.

Does it sound like the hotkey is the issue? Does anyone know where I'd find the driver? Is there any way to turn the wireless on without using the function key (there's no switch)? Like through windows? I've been trying to sort it out for 4 hours and gotten nowhere.

Thanks for reading.

Hi

Win 7 requires the Toshiba VAP (value added package) installation to get the FN buttons working.
Visit the Toshiba EU driver page and there you can find the VAP for Win 7 64bit

If you need the VAP for Win 7 32bit, choose another notebook series and use the VAP released for another notebooks.
The VAP does not depend on notebook series.

My working/viewing window in Paint program was somehow made enormous. It's completely white and goes down maybe 2' and spreads across the right side about the same.

I can't get it back to normal. "Normal" for me is - the screen opens, mostly gray, and the working box is about the size of a a business card. Presently the white area goes down over 2'! Also goes way out on the right side. I've tried scrolling down to drag the little black dots on the edge to draw the screen up and in. I see a dotted line moving up the page but when I release the mouse nothing shrinks.

This has happened before but I've been able to drag the white screen back to normal. What can I do this time.

For some strange reason, the brightness doesn't appear to be increasing or decreasing anymore. Whether I try it from the FN key function, or the power options and even under settings on the right swipe menu, the brightness on the monitor is not changing. I trying rebooting, but that didn't help either. I'm runing an acer aspire ES1-512-C1W0 with Windows 8.1 64bit 4GB RAM. Any ideas what's wrong?

Well, nevermind. Problem solved I guess. I did a restart instead of a shutdown, and it looks like it started working again. Not sure why it wasn't before.

What is the product number? Did anything change before this started happening? Power the system on and press F10 about once a second to get into BIOS.  Once you are in BIOS, go to the configuration tab (typically next to last tab) and set Action Keys to enabled.  Save the changes, exit, and the system should reboot automatically.  Test the brightness keys wihtout pressing the Fn key.  I suspect they will not work in this state, but I want to rule out the possibilities while awaiting the product number.
