IE and Outlook Express won't launch

Q: IE and Outlook Express won't launch

Internet Explorer and Outlook Express won't launch from either the Start menu, the All Programmes menu or the quick launch toolbar. The internet connection is fine, it's just that the programmes don't start (the hourglass is briefly on show, then stops).

I run XP Home (Service Pack 2) on an Intel Pentium (R) 4 (CPU 2,53).

I've recently been battling (for the first time in ages) with a lot of viruses, though don't know if that's connected. So I thought I'd ask XP support first in case there's something simple that I'm missing.

My PC has been struggling for speed for months - and in efforts to speed it up have used CCleaner recently and weeded out the Local Settings/Temp files.

My normal anti-virus software is McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.0. To help identify and fight some viruses that weren't being picked up by McAfee, I installed free versions of Security Task Manager, SpyProtector and, most recently BitDefender v10.

Any help much appreciated (have been able to sign up with techsupport through webmail on wireless laptop).

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an email address with my ISP. When I lauch Outlook Express it defaults to my main identity. I have Internet Explorer 5 and I have Windows 4 NT. My wife was clever and set up a second identity for her hotmail email in the Outlook Express box. (which I recently found out she should not have done.) It was working fine for a couple of weeks. Then it got locked up when I switched from Main Identity to Her Identity. I rebooted and now whenever I lauch Outlook Express (either from the start menu or from the shortcut) I get an hourglass to tell me something is starting to work and then it does nothing....

Help! I am locked out of my email.
I had to use my wife's email address just to post this question.

Hi - my first time so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can even log a question, never mind get an answer! Anyway, here goes:

I am running an Asus Eee PC 1.66ghz 1.99 gb RAMIntel Atom

Asus runs XP Home Edition V2002 Service pack 3

I loaded MS/Office 2007 Student edition: I de-selected Outlook Express as I didn't want/need it, but ever since then whenever I switch on the PC I get the following message: "Outlook Express could not be started. The application was unable to open the Outlook Express store. Your computer may be out of memory (it isn't!) or your disk is full (it isn't!)"

When I reply OK to this message I get a follow on message "To free up disk space Outlook Express can compact messages, this may take a few minutes". I respond OK to this and get a Windows message ?Windoes search system tray has encountered a problem and needs to close". After responding to this message the problem seems to clear and I can continue using the PC with no further messages or issues.

If anyone could help please to get rid of these irksome messages it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A:Outlook Express tries to launch on login

At what point in the install did you de-select Outlook Express? Outlook Express is incorporated into the OS, and Microsoft Outlook does not come with MS/Office 2007 Student edition. Have you looked into the System Configuration Utility? In there you can chose which programs to start in the Start up tab.

can anyone give me a step by step description, how i can export my Emails and the Address book from Outlook Express 6 to another Computer which runs also Outlook Express 6?
I tried already to export the Address book but it only allows me to export it as a *.csv-File and after i put the data on my usb stick and try to import it on my new computer by File - Import - Addressbook, the program keeps asking me for a *.wab-File? (btw: i can only use the: "Text File (Comma Separated Values))" Option, when exporting the address book.

Export and Import from email messages doesn't work either.

Has anyone a really step-by-step description how to do this??

Thank you very much in advance for your help

A:Solved: Import & Export from Outlook Express 6 to Outlook Express 6

Hi wizzle2003

When you are ready to Import the .csv file on the destination computer,
In Outlook Express,
File > Import > Other Address Book
You should then be given the option to choose a Text File (Comma Separated Values)
Then Browse to the .csv file to complete the Import.
Enable Show Hidden Files and folders:

Open My Computer,
Tools > Folder Options > View tab,
under Hidden Files and Folders, verify Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected.
Remove the check mark for Hide Extensions for known file types.
To locate the directory where Outlook Express keeps it's message store:
Tools > Options > Maintenance tab > Store Folder
Note the location, then Cancel out of the window.

Navigate to that directory, copy all the .dbx files to a folder on the Desktop.
Copy those files to a folder on the Desktop of the destination computer.
If you are using a Flash drive to transfer the files, it may take a couple of transfers to complete.

Once all the .dbx files are on the Destination computer,
Open Outlook Express,
Tools > Import > Messages > Microsoft Outlook Express 6 > Next
Select: Import mail from an OE 6 store directory
Click: OK
Browse to the folder containing the .dbx files on the Desktop.
When you reach the Finish button,
You should see a "Congratulations Your data was successfully imported"

If there is more than one Identity in Outlook Express, switch to the other Identities in Outlook Express and repeat the steps above.

Hey Folks

I am trying to import OE5 .dbx files from a Win2k machine to a completely different machine (Win2003) with OE6. Everytime I try to import the DBX files I get an error message stating:

"No messges can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open..."

The thing is I have even tried copying the DBX files from the old machine to the new machine and importing them from a directory on the new machine. I stil get the same message!

Another strange thing is the impor facility on OE6 does not provic an option import OE5 files, only OE4 & OE6.

I've already imported my mail accounts and address book, just not my messages.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Thx in advance.

A:How to import files from Outlook Express 5 to Outlook Express 6?

Hi Melissa, Welcome to TSG! First, make sure you can view hidden files and folders and do a search for your OE5 .dbx files. Find > *.dbx
Remember the location!

Then to import from OE5 into OE6, click
File > Import > Messages > OE6, then select "Import from an OE6 store directory" and Browse to the folder containing the OE5 *.dbx files. Make sure they are not set to 'read only'.

Qurb is a third-party anti-spam program. Try going to Start > Programs > Qurb > Disable Qurb

If it's not listed in Programs, try the following:

In Outlook go to Tools > Options > Other > Advanced Options > Add-In Manager

Look for a "Qurb" entry here and uncheck it. Ok out of Options and restart Outlook.

Hi folks! I'm new here, so please forgive me if I commit a faux pas on forum etiquette.

But, here's the problem:

I recently uninstalled Norton Anti-Virus and installed AVG.

Now, when I try to open Outlook, it won't launch. It hangs and I get this error message:

"Microsoft Office Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

It closes and when I click on it again it asks if I want to open it in SAFE MODE instead. I click Yes and it gives me the same error message again.

I try to open it again and it gives me an error messages stating:

"Outlook failed to launch in safe mode. Would you like to start 'Detect and Repair?"

I click Yes and it goes through the steps (I have the office set-up file on my hard-drive) and once it's done, I try to launch Outlook again and it does the same exact thing again (see above).

I've tried everything!

I've uninstalled both AVG and Norton to no effect.

I've tried to reboot in safe mode and it still does the same thing (I can't even launch it in Safe-Safe-Mode!)

I've upgraded my outlook 2002 to 2003 and downloaded all the most recent updates.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2003...same thing happens.

I've run a scan of my .psi file to make sure it wasn't corrupted.

I've uninstalled AVG anti-spyware...nothing.

A:exporting Outlook Express to Outlook Express

The files you are looking for are in a folder called Outlook Express and will have the extensions .dbx

They will be in a directory path similar to the one I've include below except for the number enclosed in braces. If you don't find a path similar then just do a search for the directory Outlook Express.

C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{F71B2263-58F5-45EF-8A2D-B337C0C73961}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Just replace the .dbx files on the new machine with the .dbx files from the old machine.

My OS crashed this morning (a corrupted NTOS exe file), and I couldn't boot, so I tried to boot from the installation CD and wound up installing W2K Pro again. In the process, all my mail messages were erased/displaced. I actually have a copy of the .dbx files in another folder.

I have imported OE mail messages (dbx files) before, several times before when I changed systems and HDs and have done so successfully. However, on this day, I cannot seem to 'get it right'. Here is what I did:

I copied the dbx message files to a folder on the C-drive (mail mesages 0523105). I then opened OE and under File, clicked on Import, then messages, them OE6, then OE6 store directory, then Next....The process imported only 12 of the 42 folders I had on the list, and no matter what I did, it only imported mail from those folders and none others.

Is there anything I am doing wrong, or should do in addition to what I have already done? Is there another method for importing OE6 mail messages to another OE6 application?

A:Importing Outlook Express into Outlook Express

I have done some experimenting since I posted the first message.

I created several .dbx files from the list of dbx folders I have for the messages. It doesn't seem to matter which folders I include in the dbx files, the same identical 12 folders show up as mail folders to be imported....even if they are not included on the list I created.

Apparently, there is a default list of folders that has not changed, or does not change when I select the mail folders to be imported. I guess I need to find out where these are and change them.

I could use Web Mail with Gmail or ATT-Yahoo, to which I have access, but I prefer getting my mail to my PC and keeping it there.

gang I found an old post here that describes my situation, something I caused but don't know how to undo.
The system in question has Windows XP Professional, and MS Office 2000 Professional, the main reason for which is OUTLOOK. When Outlook cranks up it triggers an error message which is in my subject line:
"Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook Express 4.01 or greater....". The system of course also has OE6 on it which we don't use, but it does work etc.

The issue is me: I use autoruns to shut off everything non-mandatory, and, as another thread-poster identified, there is something in the list of goods that I have disabled that OE is dependent on, if I understand the old thread properly. The problem is that the poster [OP] in that thread said he found the key, but he didn't NAME THE ENTRIES
Thus, I dunno which ones he reversed that made the issue go away.

if anyone knows, pls let me know, so I can fix my goof.

The worst thing is that this is totally random even tho mostly I have to restart my work machine before I even get a shot at starting Outlook again after this error..
As I said, the error is random and "fixes itself" after a while...and that "while" can be over an hour long... This is on my laptop at work and our support only says that it's the .pst files that aren't closed correctly however I still get the error when I don't use any pst archives...I also tried to create a new mail profile but that doesn't help either...I even managed to get the same error when I was creating a new mail profile...

So any ideas and suggestions on this?

A:Outlook 2013 - unable to launch

A few suggestions: https://www.ablebits.com/office-addins-blog/2013/12/06/cannot-start-microsoft-outlook-solutions/

In there it mentions trying to reset the Navigation Pane, a quick way to test would be Windows Key + R and type " Outlook.exe /resetnavpane" see if that helps any.

Let me know if that article helped at all or not.

I recently installed Office 2003 pro and when I try and open Outlook I get an error message that says;
"Can not start Office Outlook. mapi32.dll is corrupt or the wrong version. This could be caused by installing messaging software. Please re-install Outlook".

The fix in the KB was to rename the file to mapi32.old and then run the fixmapi.exe. utility.
When I click on that (fixmapi.exe) though it won't open.
Everything else works fine in the Office 2003 installation.
Just so you know I un-installed it and re-installed it just to be sure and it still happens.

Can anyone help me?
Thank you,

A:Solved: Outlook fails to launch;

Have you tried re-installing Outlook from the Office install cd's?

How to repair Office
Start > control panel > add/remove > select Microsoft Office and then click change > select Repair Office when the menu appears. This should repair any errors in Office.
(you may need your Office Disk ready, unless there is a ghost image called 'ose.exe' installed on your computer.

A couple of days ago my Outlook XP (2002) began crashing on start-up (after generally launching and running normally before). I installed Office XP Service Pack 3 in hope that this update would fix the problem however it didn't.

On start-up, the following things occur:
1. The MS Outlook main window and introduction splash screen (i.e. large logo with user and product ID details, etc) is displayed as if Outlook is loading as normal
2. The main application window is white, i.e. with no actual program elements (folder list, preview pane, etc) displayed inside except the main toolbar ("File", "Edit", "View", etc).
3. After a short while (c.15-30 seconds) the application crashes and the "Restart Microsoft Outlook" and "Send Error Report" dialogue box is displayed. The Error Report contains the following error signature data:

AppName: Outlook.exe
AppVer: 10.0.6626.0
ModName: Outllib.dll
ModVer: 10.0.6515.0
Offset: 0002d704

Outlook also failed to launch in "Safe Mode" and also after I deleted my default Outlook.pst and Outlook-Hotmail.pst files (made copies first so I didn't lose the data).

I have spent the last couple of days trying to resolve this problem myself and checked several websites (including Microsoft) for any information that might help me but have found nothing.

I urgently need to get my Outlook back up and running and access to the data contained in my PST file. I would appreciate any help you ... Read more

This symptom has been bothering me for a while and I can't seem to find a permanent solution to it.

In our company's domain, where we have pretty stringent standardization on everything, our users seem hit or miss whether or not they'll get an Outlook logon prompt when they launch Outlook. This account information is always just their Windows domain logon.

The profiles are set up with a straight exchange server address, there is never any saved passwords in the users profile. And it is never a case where they are not synchronized with the domain. There also doesn't seem to be any common denominator in terms of desktops vs laptops or using a cached profile or not.

Something is interfering with the pass-thru authentication. We keep Windows firewall disabled via GPO as well. Our Outlook installs are completely generic, no add-ins or forms or templates.

I have tried the usual list of troubleshooting steps, re-created the email profiles, deleted OST files, ran an Outlook repair, turned off/on cached mode.

No matter what, it just seems like a roll of the dice whether a user gets the logon prompt or not, except that if they do get the prompt, then they always get the prompt upon the launching of Outlook. Most people don't, but about 20% of our users have this "plague".

Any idea's or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have over 13 years of Outlook Express folders and addresses that I desperately need to convert to Outlook 2007. I should have imported them into Outlook before I made the "Easy File Transfer" to the new Win 7 machine, but didn't know I needed to do that. Several years ago I had imported the files into Outlook, although that data did transfer it is now way out-of-date and full of duplicates.

The up-to-date data is still in my old machine and also in an external hard drive backup. I have isolated the Outlook Express personal folders into .dbx format and the addresses into .wab format.

Is there a way this can be reformatted into Outlook? Or is there some other way? I would probably also need to delete what is already in Outlook first, or I would have many more duplicates.

I welcome any suggestions.

I mainly use Outlook 2000, however, in order to get a number of Hotmail messages onto my computer's HD, i synchronised Outlook Express with Hotmail. I now have messages from a folder I have on Hotmail on my hard drive too.

A search revealed that this folder (and presumably all messages in it) is stored under C:\Windows\Application Data\Identities\{00B31680-0793-11D3-A398-C0610D677E39}\Microsoft\Outlook Express.

I copied the .dbx file named hotmail - [folder name].dbx to my desktop. I went in to Outlook 2000 file>import blah blah blah, but it wont let me import .dbx files

soooooo.....is there anyway to get my messages from hotmail from this specific folder into outlook 2000? i no longer need the folder in hotmail and will just delete it as soon as i have a permanent copy on my hard drive in outlook 2000. im assuming that since the dbx file is on my hard disk with all the messages (which i can read offline in outlook express) that i wont need to set up outlook 2000 for hotmail synchronisation ?!?

Folks I have read the MS tech notes on how to get Outlook 2003 [I have it via Office 2003 Professional, full install] to import from OE6. It fails under either option: import from "another program" or "Import Internet Mail....". Under the former it is pointed to the correct folder, but fails with Error: Cannot open,.. another program in use" but there's not... I tried copying the folder to a nice clean location on the C: and checked all the properties, nothing interfering, still won't open the folder.
Under the latter option it just doesn't do anything after directing it to the correct folder. Seems to accept the command, closes the window, but does not import anything. No error messages.

Umm.... do MS teams communicate with one another??

Closely related: If I could just get the FOLDERS I had setup it would be a great asset, or if i could just get the ADDRESS book it would help. Do you know how to import *.dbx folders into Outlook 2003? Or the old outlook Express address Book?

A:Outlook 2003 Will Not Import Outlook Express folders, mail, anything

They are written in two different formats that are uncompatible. The Oulook Express has a file sytem totally unique to it.

I had the same problem about 6 weeks ago going from XP to Win7.
I had to transfer address book to notepad and put it into Outlook one at a time. The old mail sits in the old PC.
I have heard you can transfer the OE mail files over to Windows mail or gmail etc. Then transfer files from the new mail server to Outlook.
File system is changed over with the mail transfer- I haven't tried it though.

I did a Google and found this. I didn't find this page six weeks ago.

Hello everyone (And sorry for such a long thread title!)

One of the elderly gentleman where I work, has been given a Dell laptop by his Son that's running W7 64bit.

He has a copy of Office 2000 that he would like to install on this machine, and use the bundled Outlook from it as his default e-mail client. The only problem is, the current desktop PC he's using, is running Windows XP (unsure which version) and he's got Outlook Express as his e-mail viewing software on there at the moment.

Can the profile (sorry if that's the wrong term) from XP's Outlook Express be "ported" into the Outlook from Office 2000, whilst all of this is running on W7 64bit?

Many, many thanks in advance

A:Migrating XP's Outlook Express to Office 2000's Outlook on W7 64bit

Office 2000 is not supported on Windows 7, and is insecure and past it's lifetime support. That said, there may be workarounds to get it to work on 7, but that's probably more difficult then your original question. I'd think your friend would need a newer version, then revisit can it be done For instance:

Import messages into Windows Mail from Outlook Express

Import your messages or account from Outlook Express to Outlook - Outlook - Office.com

Trying to use Office 2000 would not be at all advisable.
