Solved: Duplicate of main hd

Q: Solved: Duplicate of main hd

I think my hd is on its way out. Lately I have to used the OS disk to fix corrupted files more often. And after start up, the hd making noise sort like it doing formatting, and won't stop until at least 15 minutes later.
So my question is: Is it the hd going bad? If it is, then how can I make a duplicated or moved everything on it, including the operating system, to a new hd?

My second question is: The computer is fast off line and online such as surfing the net. On a particular site, it really slow. It's not the site because my other computers load it fast (older computer too).

The OS is window Vista 32. Dedicated video card. 2.5 ghz cpu speed, dual core AMD.

Thanks in advance for your input/help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My ISP is sending me two ethernet over powerline adaptors with a new service they have started. It needs an etehrnet connection which is very close to where I have a switch so I don't need to use the powerline adaptors for their intended use.

Instead I want to use them in replacement of the wire that currently runs between my router and my switch (switch is the only thing plugged into the router), what is the usual speed of these ethernet over powerline adaptors?

Also are they usually reliable enough to use as the internet backbone of my network?

Sorry if this gets long, I want to make sure I explain the problem sufficiently. I am trying to hook up my LG LCD HDTV to my husband's Toshiba Satellite via HDMI. I right-clicked on the desktop and went into "Graphics Propreties...". At first, I did a desktop clone, which worked out great, but I wasn't satisfied with the resolution. I figured it had something to do with the max resolution available on the notebook, since what displayed on the TV was just a clone of the notebook's display. I then switched to single display, with the HDTV as the display. That worked, andI was able to up the resolution past what was available before. Here is where the problem starts: I was switching back and forth with a few different resolutions, and happened to pick one that apparantly my HDTV does not like, as the screen went black and "Invalid Format" danced around the screen. As soon as I unplugged the TV from the notebook, it switched back to the notebook's display. Here is my question: I need to know how to either fix the resolution issue with the TV without it being plugged into the notebook, or I need to know how to reset the graphics settings so that it does not remember that I ever hooked it up to the TV in the first place, at which point I can start from scratch and not mess around with the resolution to begin with.

A:Solved: Problem with using HDTV as main display

Hi Skinygrl99, and welcome to TSG.

Found this in the PDF version of the A500 Series User Guide:
Directing the display output when you turn on the computer
Once you have connected an external display device, you can
choose to use the internal display only, the external device only, or
both simultaneously.
Some modes are only available with the appropriate device attached
and turned on.
The quickest way to change the display output settings is to use the
display hot key (Fn + F5):
1 Press Fn and F5 simultaneously.
2 While holding down Fn, press F5 repeatedly until the setting
you want takes effect. Briefly pause each time you press the F5
key to allow time for the display to change.
This hot key cycles through the settings in the following order:
❖ Built-in display only
❖ Built-in display and external monitor simultaneously
❖ External monitor only
❖ TV (or other external video device) only
❖ Built-in display and TV (or other external video device)
❖ Built-in display and external monitor (extended desktop)
❖ Built-in display and TV (extended desktop)
❖ Swap—Switch primary display between internal display
and external monitor when using extended desktop

That should let you get back to using the control panel to select a suitable mode for the exteranl screen.

I've been trying to clear out my hard drive of some stuff to free up some much needed space. However, I can't seem to find what it is that's taking up so much space. When I look at what all is on there, nothing seems to add up to the amount that it says is on there. My main drive is 69.6 GB big and it says I have 13 GB free (I know that's low, that's why I'm trying to clear it out of things I don't need on there). The problem is, I have uninstalled and deleted everything I don't need and have the main drive almost down to the essentials and a few other programs I use regularly. It should leave me with almost 30 GB free space, but as I have mentioned, it says I only have 13 GB free. Aside from what I have done, how else can I find out what is taking up all this space? Could it just be that something is wrong with my main drive? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi, I have been through all the threads and I cannot seem to find one that is similar to mine. I had a network that was working fine, and now suddenly my main computer has disappeared from the network. It just suddenly happened when I tried to print to the main printer on the network.
I can access the internet on the router and print to my main colour printer that is connected to my computer but when I click "View workgroup computers" I get the following message "Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrater of this service to find out if you have permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available"
I also cannot print to Acrobat Distiller.
I recently changed from McAfee to Kapersky because McAfee was not able to update and I also ran RegCure. Could either of these things have caused my network to disappear? I also removed Google Desktop Search and then installed it again a week or so later. Sorry if these are dunb questions but I am a real newbie to the way computers work and only know my way around digital image editing!

What version of Windows is on each PC?

How does your work laptop connect to the internet? (if its via a local network, which then connects to the inetrnet via a router there will be firewall issues)

How does your home PC connect to the internet?

Does "your work" actually permit a remote connection (and how do they manage the implied security issues if they do?)

Here is the situation. My customer called me and said his computer keeps booting in an endless loop. I suspected a corrupted master boot record. I went to his house, booted up into the Recovery Console, did memory checks and such, and did a FIXBOOT command. Well, this did nothing for me except give me some typing practice. I noticed too that I can't get it to boot into SAFE MODE.

When I rebooted it, it came up with the infamous "NTLDR IS MISSING - PRESS CTRL-ALT-DEL TO RESTART". And then it gets really exciting!! I tried rebooting again and got the BSOD 0x0000007f error. Well, I did all of the normal processes of elimination by removing one RAM module at a time (but memory already checked good so it was more of a second check than anything else) and disconnected one CD/DVD drive, although since I worked on the hard drive last, it just makes sense that something went awry on the hard drive.

Moving right along, I removed the hard drive and connected it to my Linux laptop (gotta love Linux!!!) and Linux sees all of the folders and files. I think something got messed up in the boot sector but now all I can get is a constant BSOD. Let me just clarify one point I left out above....the BSOD appears when I try to boot from the Windows XP disc in an attempt to get back into the Recovery Console. I think that perhaps the FIXBOOT and FIXMBR commands jacked up some pointers and now the processor doesn't know where to look so it stops.

I say all that to ask this: Is ... Read more

A:[SOLVED] BSOD due to main hard drive

Hi Mike, you know I've been seeing this kind of thing alot lately. It ususally ends up being just like you said a totally messed up boot record. Now how this comes to be I really haven't found out yet, although I suspect some sort of a Win update, 3rd party service conflict that is occuring to all these computers. Although you may very well be able to resolve this without a reinstall, since you are able to recover the info with linux, the easiest fastest way to fix this persons computer is going to be to get the data, use kill disk to wipe the drive and do a format and re-install. Believe me the client will thank you since the computer will most likely work better than ever. If you need a link to download killdisk just let me know. I'm sorry I don't have a better fix for you, but I have tried everything else with this problem and as I said this was always the easiest fix.

Let Me know if I can help further.

Ok, I downloaded the Aol Computer checkup and it found so many duplicate files that are taking up space BUT I have no idea as to what files I can safely delete. Is there a duplicate file program that will let me delete un-necessary files while protecting the one's that I need? If not, someone should make one!

A:Solved: Duplicate files

The only duplicate files you should delete are ones you accidentally created. There is no issue with duplicate system files, and they're usually required by the operating system and programs.

Do not perform unnecessary maintenance on your computer. Many people have literally "cleaned" their computers to death until they no longer function and need to completely reinstall everything.

Hello, I have been going nuts since Friday. I am trying to figure out which settings on a Sonicwall 1260 Pro could cause this Duplicate name on the network error on every machine in our network.

I have tried a bunch of things to fix this error but can not figure out what could be the issue. I followed the few threads i could find here and elsewhere to try and fix the problem. I am thinking there was a setting changed on our router sometime ago that did not take affect until the router was restarted on Thursday night. That is when the problem seemed to start. There was a challenge from a remote DC over a Site-to-Site VPN to our local DC that took the master browser from our network. So now anytime someone reboots we get a Duplicate name on the the network. I did change a setting in the DCs registry that makes it the MasterBrowser and rebooted it, but that has not made a difference. The only thing i can think of now is to shut down every machine in the network bring up the DC then the rest. But if the setting has not been changed on the router, then i will have the same issue again.

I am basically asking for help for where to look in the Sonicwall. We do not have a WINS server and use DNS instead. All our machines are XP or Server 2003, so there was no reason to put WINS on the network. I do not want to disable the netbios settings on each workstation, we do have users who like to browse my network places for shares on other computers.

Any help is appreciated. Hopefully this... Read more

I had Exported copies of my bookmarks for Firefox and Netscape and put them into a Backup folder. When I do Exports, I add the date that I did them - ex.: FFbookmarks[July20-07].html.

I've reformated my puter and when I wanted to Import my bookmarks, well, I had 3 of each - all different dates and sizes. Obviously, when I Imported them, I ended up with doubles and triples of all bookmarks . Since I have 100's of bookmarks, is there an easy way of deleting the extra's without having to go through each and every one of them???? I have them organized into folders and although I've gone through quite a few of them, scrolling up and down and trying to memorize URL's is just NOT my forte

At least IE recognized duplicates and deals with them.

I was looking in my program files the other night and noticed that I have Firefox listed, along with Firefox(2). It appears both programs are complete, yet when I go into uninstall on Revco uninstaller...it only lists one Firefox.

I also tried looking with ccleaner uninstaller and it shows only 1 Firefox.

I recently uninstalled Firefox because it was having a problem one day. I immediately downloaded it from cnet....and re-installed Firefox as my main browser.

I didn't import stuff from Internet Explorer....like I did when I first added Firefox. Plus, I didn't add the Firefox "add ons". However, they still are on current Firefox. I have RTM (Remember The Milk) and Clipit. The Internet Explorer stuff does not appear...which is want I want.

I don't seem to be having problems with Firefox currently, but why have 2 on my hard drive?

Any ideas on how I can fix this? I did not try uninstalling with Windows uninstall yet, but ccleaner and Revco seem to do a better job anyway.

The linked tables all have PK's set, that are also autonumber, no duplicates, unique; and then a linking field to link it to the clients table. There is a main clients form, with 6 tabs, each tab contains a subform for each of the linked tables.
There are 13 users on the system, and all 13 are usually using the database throughout the day. The database is split between frontend / backend, with the BE residing on a shared 1TB network server drive.
Recently, they are getting the error (when entering in the billing tab) that "the record cannot be created because it would create a duplicate in an index field" or something similar to that. I assume this is happening because two or more users are entering billing information at the same tab, but never in the same clients record, just entering data into the same table at roughly the same time.
How can I stop this from happening, short of creating an independant popup form for the billing.
I have tried to figure out a way to have the subform "hold" the new entry until they tab through the record completing the record information, and then adding it into the billing table, but as of yet havent figur... Read more

Logged on and got a message saying I did not have Windows Operating System or that it was Corrupted....Not sure how this happened. I reinstalled OS from recovery disc then when I booted up I was prompted to select the OS that I wanted to use. I determined which one it was and then followed instructions found on this site to remove the one that I did not want. Now when I log on I am still prompted but this time to Choose either the XP that I want to use or Microsoft Windows. This is what my boot file looks like. The bottom entry is the one that works. My question, Is if OK to delete the Default line?

[boot loader]
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

TY for you help.

Hey guys,

When I click on my IE icon on my desktop it just creates another shortcut and never launches IE. I can get to IE through the start menu however when I click on anything in the menu bar or type in any address in the address bar IE will lock up. I can type things into the search engine. I am running windows updates now to see if this will take care of the problem but I had to type windows updates into the search engine I was unable to get to it through tools windows updates without it locking up on me. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this?

I just noticed that I seem to have two versions of Net Framework....can I safely uninstall version 2.0

XP Home SP2

A:Solved: NET Framework duplicate ?

No, in order for 3.5 to work it needs 3.0 and 2.0.

But to be up-to-date you should go to Windows Update and get 3.5 SP1, which will update the others to 3.0 SP2 and 2.0 SP2.

I have a Main form with 2 subforms. The first subform is in Dataview and the second is in single form view. I have a hidden field on the main form called txtscvid with control of =[Path subform].[Form].[SVCID]. On the 2nd subform I have Child=scvid and Master=txtscvid. I also have on the 1st subform the code for "on click" Me.Parent![Record subform2].Requery. Also, both subforms uses the same query. This all works fine as I cycle through the Main Form records. I can click on each record in subform1 and that record is displayed in subform2. However I also have a combo box on the Main form where I search the for orderid in the subform1. When I select the desired orderid in the dropdown, the subform1 displayed the desired records but the second subform disappears. What am I missing in the coding to make the combo search work correctly for the second subform?

Note: If I open my form and the first record that appears does not have any records for the the subform, and I do a search then the subform2 will never appear. But if I cycle to one that does and then close my form and reopen then the combo box works and displays my records with the subform2 at the bottom.

Hi there,

I have 2 computers (+ a laptop sometimes). Both computers are ethernet hard wired to a belkin wireless router & the laptop uses 'wireless' connection.

Both computers often remain on for hours; the main one (with the router installed on it) will very often fail to connect to the internet via explorer, O/E or even any updater (avg etc.) after being on for several hours. A reboot cures the problem.

However, the other computer never loses its connection. (Nor does the laptop). All run the XP o.s.

All suggestions for a cure gratefully accepted please.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Ok, so... As you know a motherboard has a main power connection, and the number of pins varies - 20+4, 24, 20 pin... and I think 20/24+6 pin in some cases.

Now, I am going to purchase http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188024, which is an EVGA motherboard with a 24 pin main connector.

That is set in stone, and almost as much so is the power supply of choice, a fantastic creation by Zalman:

But this is a 20+4 pin configuration.

So, having never tried to get one to work with the other in the past (i always chcked the pins were the same on previous builds), is there a way to hook up that sexy motherboard with that beast power supply? Will the "+4" pins simply plug into the last four pins of the 24 on the mobo like a USB header (with the 20 pin and 4 pin snug side by side on the 24 pin mobo) , or is there any sort of adapter?

Or do I have to find a new PSU. That would suck.

Also, I would be willing to cut up a pair of adapters and put together my own 20+4 to 24 pin adapter if they are not available (cannot find them... so I assume it is not needed though). Although I would need an adapter.

I had a windows 7 home basic installation on a 40GB (C Drive) drive. This did not let me share files on a home network and the drive was practically full of OS stuff.

So I though I'd solve the problem by getting an 80GB HD (D drive) and installing windows 7 Ultimate on it.

plan worked until I tried to format the old drive. It doesnt allow me to. If i make it "inactive" from cmd prompt, the computer wont boot.

In disk management, it says "system" for the old C drive.

I even tried unplugging the C drive, in the hope inserting the windows CD would repair the D drive and it would boot up, but no such luck. failed to start windows full stop.

any ideas?

A:[SOLVED] Cannot format a hardrive that used to be the main windows installation

To avoid problems like that, you should always perform a fresh Windows installation with no hard drive connected other than the one you want to install Windows on.

It appears that the boot files for your Windows 7 Ultimate installation have been written to the old drive.

Physically remove the old drive, then re-install Windows 7 Ultimate again on the new drive. This will ensure that the boot files are also placed on the new drive.
