Windows 7 Enterprise bug - file save-as renames a file if passing through a folder shortcut

Q: Windows 7 Enterprise bug - file save-as renames a file if passing through a folder shortcut

On my work computer (Windows 7 Enterprise), I've noticed a very strange and troublesome bug appears when navigating the Save-As directory. The usual Google searches are utterly fruitless and bloated with far-off tangents completely unrelated to this
issue... and a search of this forum and help library are equally helpless, so I thought I'd try a more direct approach.

I use custom shortcuts to zip through my folder hierarchies (my personal way of organizing stuff, since I use tons of folders). I simply ctrl+C (copy) the folder I want to link to, then right-click and pick "paste shortcut", to make my
little quick-link. That's what I mean by "shortcut" henceforth (nothing to do with keyboard shortcuts).
So, in any program (for example, AutoCAD 2013), pick "Save As..." and the standard browsing dialogue box opens up. Normal behavior is opening a folder to save the file in it, or going up a level. No problem.
The issue happens when clicking through one of those shortcuts I mentioned above. When you do this, Win7 inexplicably (and very annoyingly) changes the existing SaveAs filename (default, or one you entered) to the name of that shortcut instead, destroying
the original filename in the process.
An example: create a folder in your My Documents, then a shortcut for it (as explain above). Now try saving an image from Wikipedia or something, into that folder you just created. If you get there via the folder itself, no problem: you can save
the file as its original name. But if you use the shortcut, it follows the shortcut through to the folder (as it should), but now the SaveAs name assumes the name of the shortcut (which is this bug).
A more specific example, with hypothetical filenames and folders:

Create a folder in My Documents (or wherever you like) named "Submarines"Make a shortcut to that folder, named "Submarines - Shortcut"Save image from the internet that is named "nuclear_submarine.jpg"Double-click on the shortcut to reach the folder "Submarines": your SaveAs field deleted "nuclear_submarine.jpg" and is now trying to save "Submarines - Shortcut.jpg" instead.Rage at the bug for screwing up your file.

I have Windows XP at home, and can confirm it has never had this behavior, because I use such shortcuts all the time. Windows XP treats such shortcuts exactly like ordinary folders you might browse through, without mucking up the name
of the file you're trying to save; it just jumps to the designated location and keeps the SaveAs filename intact.
That is the proper behavior for shortcuts.

I'm planning to get Windows 7 Pro for my new home PC, but seeing this bug at work has given me pause; this bug will destroy my whole file-saving system. I would really like to know if this bug is exclusive to Win7 Enterprise or not... and if not, if
there's a way to fix it, or a third-party freeware patch/extension to correct the bug if Microsoft is unwilling to patch it themselves (or maybe they are calling it a "feature"). Thank you for your time.

Preferred Solution: Windows 7 Enterprise bug - file save-as renames a file if passing through a folder shortcut

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows 7 Enterprise bug - file save-as renames a file if passing through a folder shortcut

Hi,
I have followed the example you mentioned to save a picture to the folder shortcut, and the name won't change to the shortcut. Also the picture would be saved into the original folder.
Here is the steps I did:
1. Create a folder named New folder in My documents:
2. Select it and then press ctrl + C and right-click on destop choose paste shortcut(named New folder-Shortcut);
3. Right-click on a picture in one webpage then open the save picture as dialog box;
4. Navigate to the desktop folder shortcut and double-click into it, the file name field won't change;
5. My machine is Windows 7 Enterprise SP1.
Would you please tell some more details on how you saved the picture?
In addition, there might be some other applications triggered this action, we may take a look with process monitor:
The download link here:
Process monitor
And here is a blog talking about how to use it:
Process Monitor - Hands-On Labs and Examples
If possible, please redo the action, then upload the result into onedrive and paste the link here.

Firstly, my employee's are running into a problem where they cant save their files because the file is "in use" according to windows 7.

What i've narrowed it down to is the fact that windows uses the files to display details or even a preview of the file whether it be a thumbnail or a window pane preview of the file or even simple details barring it from saving the file after it is opened, edited, and ready to be saved.

I have disabled all the obvious frills that might be conflicting such as: "file previews, show thumbnails etc." just cant quite get this resolved.

Also, windows 7 and its short term memory loss wont allow some of my employees to save their favorite folder views (I understand that windows 7 tried to implement a more functional window mode, allowing users to have multiple view for their different folders) but the "pick one and stick with it option" of "Apply to all folders" the obvious approach doesnt work. Or merely works for a few days then reverts. I've seen regedits about changing the "bag size" and such but that looks a little more involved than i want to get with the registry, also potentially affecting something in the process.

Any tips?

Hello
I have been trying to create a shortcut to launch a batch file one folder up from the shortcut location.
I have been able to do this using and intermediate batch file in the same folder as the shortcut as follows:
Intermediate.bat:
@echo off
FOR %%V IN ("%~dp0..\") DO set curdrv=%%~dpV
start "" %curdrv%Oneup.bat

And the shortcut target is:
%windir%\system32\cmd.exe /c Intermediate.bat

and the 'Start in' is left blank.

This way I can move these folders anywhere on the drive or another drive and the shortcut still works.
However, I would like to leave out the Intermediate.bat file and launch the Oneup.bat directly. I tried:
%windir%\system32\cmd.exe /c FOR %%V IN ("%~dp0..\") DO set curdrv=%%~dpV && start "" %curdrv%Oneup.bat
in the Target of the shortcut, but it doesn't work.
Is there some trick to getting this to work?
Thanks

A:External hdd renames itself after an image file i mounted cant rename

Open Control Panel then Folder Options.
Click on the view tab and uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).

Now browse the external drive and look for a desktop.ini file in the root of the drive. If there, delete it.

See if that gets the name straight again.

You can check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) again when done.

Try "saves" or "gamesave".. <-- without the quotes.
If not you can look through your user account folder for a games folder or any folder that has the game name or publisher name.

Found this too.. http://www.gods-game.com/forum/?f=71&m=137100

A:file save to temporary folder

I think wat you are saying is that when you click to download something you cant choose if you want to save it or if you want to just open it. If this is so, follow these steps.
1. Open My computer
2. Control Panel
3. Folder Options
4. Click File Types tab
5. Select the file extension you wish to be able to safe (Example: .zip, .exe, .rar, etc)
6. Click advanced button
7. Check "Confirm open after download

You will have to do this for every file extension that you need it to be done for, but only once. I hope this helps

I have Windows 7.
i copy entire flash drive to a folder (Call it "RemovableDrive" folder under My Document) from flash drive (USB).

In "RemovableDrive", folder, I right click and select Properties, then I uncheck READ ONLY, and select Apply to set all files and folder/subfolders to uncheck READ ONLY.

In the "RemovableDrive" folder, I opened a file, and edit it. Then I try to save it.
it would not let me. I also set the property of the file to READ ONLY, but still has the same problem.

What is the problem?
I have administrator privileges.

A:Copied flash to harddrive, and Cannot save edited file in folder.

What you did was to clear the Read Only attributes for this folder, sub folders and files. In FAT32 this is enough.

But in NTFS file system, you have to check the file permissions along with the ownership also for the folder.

To check the file permissions, right click on your flash folder in My Documents, select Properties - Security Tab.

Here under your username check the file permissions. Do you have full control?

Click on Advanced - Owner tab and press Edit button. Now select your username and put a check mark on Replace owner on subcontainers and objects and press OK button twice to return to the folder Properties dialog box.

Now click Advanced button, and make sure your username has full control permissions. If not click on Change Permissions and remove the tick mark on include inheritable permissions from this object's parent. Click Add button on the opened dialog box. Select your username and press Edit button. In the opened dialog box, put a check mark on Allow at full control, select Apply to this folder, sub folder and files. Keep another check mark on Apply permissons.... in the bottom of the screen and finally press OK button. Now close all the dialog boxes.

This should now allow you to edit any files in the folder.

Hello all. Not a regular user of Excel; but do need help in creating something that would be useful to me and a few others at work. I suppose the best way of explaining what I'm after is by giving an example.

I have a directory C:\Users\Tekko\Desktop\Maintenance Project\Cape Nelson
In Cape Nelson are a number of folders named alpha beta charlie delta echo and foxtrot and so on.

I would like to have an excel template in "Cape Nelson" with a macro that when activated names the file as whatever folder name might be in say cell A1 and whatever ever date might be in cell B1. Eg charlie_15-mar-2013.xls
This then is saved in the relevant folder. So in the end I would end up with
C:\Users\Tekko\Desktop\Maintenance Project\Cape Nelson\charlie\charlie_15-mar-2013.xls

Also the macro script would ensure that the macro was disabled in the saved file.

Hoping this is achievable and look forward to replies.

Hi, I am trying to completely wipe my system and reinstall windows, only I don't have the CD key. I've looked it up, and it seems relatively straight forward, I just need to save the iso file for the version of windows I'm using to a flash drive and run

Hi all,

Since many years we are using custom BMP files as icon for one of our programs. That has always worked correctly, until Windows 8 (and Windows Server 2012) came. When we create the shortcut on our desktop and we browse to the network location where the BMP
file is and we click ok, we see the icon correctly in the "preview", but as soon as I click OK twice and I go back to the desktop, the shortcut is white, with no icon.

But when I place the BMP file on the local drive and I browse to it, it displays correctly in the previewer AND on the desktop.
This behaviour occurs on both Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. Who knows how to resolve this?

We have associated a particular piece of software with a file type so that when the user tries to Open a file of this type, a specific program is run with the argument list provided by the user.

Normally there will be no arguments:

User command: MyFile.ext
Executed command: Viewer.exe MyFile.ext

But the user can invoke the file with a printer name to indicate that they want to print the file rather than view it:

User command: MyFile.ext -p MyPrinter
Executed command: Viewer.exe -p MyPrinter MyFile.ext

The problem we have is when we have to pass printer names which contain spaces - it seems impossible to edit the registry so that the spaces are preserved but the printer is still recognised as a single argument. In other words:

User command: MyFile.ext -p "My Printer"
Desired command: Viewer.exe -p "My Printer" MyFile.ext

Depending on how we attack this, what we get is Viewer.exe returning any one of the following:
Unknown printer: My
Unknown printer: "My
Unknown file: Printer

NB
The reason that the user cannot execute the "Viewer.exe" application explicitly is that its location is indeterminate - the identity of the viewer application is stored elsewhere in the registry. As part of our installation procedure we generate a .reg file and update the client PC. I attach an example - note that this is a version which only supports printer names that do NOT contain spaces - the question is how it could be modified to do so. Nothing we have ... Read more

Hi,

When programs calls for a file to be opened, it starts the "Open File" screen. On the left side there are a few custom shortcuts like Library, Desktop, Computer etc.

Some of these I never use, like the Network shortcut. Is it possible to remove this?

But more important: I use Dropbox a lot. Is it possible to add a shortcut to Dropbox (or any other frequently used folder) in the "Open File" screen?

Please see attached picture (although all text is in Norwegian you might still know what I'm talking about?)

Hello Hoggorm,

Yes, it sure is. The tutorial below can help show you how to customize the list of items displayed in the Places Bar in common File/Open dialog boxes (ex: Save As, Open).

Hope this helps,

Hello,
I'm currently in the process of testing/deploying IE11 in our environment and I've begun testing on the IE11 Enterprise Site List manager.
I've read that there are a few different ways to configure the XML file to apply via GPO per the article below.  HTTP, Local Network, Local File. (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Dn640699.aspx)
In my isolated testing I've chosen to use the local file method which is very easy to setup and use on a testing machine.
It looks like we have the flexibility to choose how we apply the XML file, and I was curious what the best options are and why?  Also are there examples of each setup being used and the benefits/downsides to each?
Here's the options that I can see using:
1. HTTP - setup an IIS website to host the XML file.
2. Local Network (UNC) - setup a UNC path on our DFS where we store the current XML file and users would have read only access to that location.
3. Local File - We could just deploy the XML file via SCCM package/application when updates to the list are required.
Could anyone please point me towards some articles, etc, explaining the pro's and cons of these methods and why I might want to choose one over the other?  I'm leaning towards just using a DFS share and option #2 because it doesn't require us to maintain
an IIS site for it but I am curious to hear if there might be any downsides to this method, or benefits to going with another method.
Thanks!

A:Stuck after passing checking file system c: screen became black

Hi Matsu5003,

Welcome onboard.

I think you did not get any response mainly because your problem description could not be understood.

Press the Power button on your Desktop (?) for more than 5 seconds to shut down your PC.

Remove it from the Mains Supply and leave it for half an hour to dissipate all charges in it.

Now connect it to the mains and switch on your PC.

Describe exactly what happens after the BIOS run.

If you get an error message carefully note it down and post.

The knowledgeable folks here ( not me ) may then perhaps be able to help you on that cue/clue.

A month or two ago I started noticing that when I try to save files to HDD from Opera it takes about 4 seconds for the (explorer) file menu to appear and let me save it.

Now I noticed the same in Subtitle Workshop and Irfanview, only that in these it takes even longer, like 7 seconds, for the load file menu to appear after I click on the "open file" icon.

Some other programs, like VLC and Winamp, don't have this problem.

Any clues?

Using Win 7 64bit, BTW. Everything updated.

I have searched up and down and around the web for a fix for this with no luck.
Hope I am posting this in the correct place..

Whenever I request a "File|Open" or "File|Save" from any application, the
mini-Windows-Explorer dialog box that opens freezes and hangs the entire
application. Happens with almost all applications. Not limited to just Microsoft programs.
It does not matter if I like change the download folder or if I rt click always the same.

Back when it was under warranty Hp tells me to just restore to original settings. I hate to do that. But I am about to see that this might be the only fix for it. (But I am hoping not.)

I think it started a long time ago when I was changing the USB ports I used for my external Hard drive and it changed drive letter. (maybe maybe not.. just seems I remember that being something that had happened when I first recall things hanging...) anyway I have all drives in the place I want them now and this issue still happens even if I dont have that external drive plugged in.

If I need to post more info please just let me know.
Thanks so much.
Appreciate the help...

I was trying to add a few shortcuts to my Windows 7 Start Menu and add a command line argument to the short cut.

I was able to create a shortcut for "Windows Explorer" using
Code:
C:\Windows\explorer.exe /n, /e D:\
When I tried to create a shortcut for FireFox to select the profile
Code:
C:\Internet\FireFox.exe -p
it didn't work. I tried using the Start> Run> command with
Code:
C:\Internet\FireFox.exe -p
and it worked fine.

What am I doing wrong?

Greetings!
For all my Microsoft Office products (Office 2010), when I go to initially save or open a file, the default location is the Documents folder. I rarely use this opting instead for a specific folder on my dedicated Data drive (in this case my E drive). Is there any way to change the default location? Note: I am NOT asking to move the documents folder to a different location. I am interested in using a different location altogether. Is this possible? I am using W7

Thanks for you help again,
Pradhan

A:Solved: Changing folder in which "Open/Save File" lands

Go to File, then Options, then click the "Save" button, and change the "Default File Location" option. You may have to do this for Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc... separately though.

Hi there,

Have you ever seen that File|Open and File|Save As does not work at all for any application? Basically nothing happens, the dialog never opens. I have tried in several browsers, Word, Visual Studio ... nothing. The common dialog to handle files never opens and as a result I can not do more "complex" things like choosing a file to upload, adding a reference in a Visual Studio project.

I have googled the web with no results. Any clues? I have a fairly new laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate x64bits. Antivirus (Microsoft Security Essentials) says the system is clean. I have rebooted several times with no luck either.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!
Miguel

A:File|Open & File|Save As does not work

It works in all our computer...

Try this:
Open an elevated CMD
and type sfc/scannow and hit enter. If there is a corrupted system file that is causing the problem the sfc/scannow utility will fix it..

I have XP SP3. I run avast and then malwarebytes once a week. I also have FF 4 and IE 8. Lately I've been getting a box that pops up on some sites (especially ebay and etsy) that either ask me to save the file to a disk or cancel. If I hit cancel and then try it again, everything is fine. Examples are below: (error, type of file and website)

All_bargains.php
php file
http://allthroughthenight.net
EbayISAPI.dll
dll file
http://myebay.com
I only get these in FF and not IE. I noticed it usually seems to happen when I click on a picture or the link next to the pictue. ( but that seems to be the basis of ebay and etsy) I did notice that if I'm in FF--I go to tools-option and then application--the following say save to a disc(always ask) beside it: dll file, irc, ircs and webcal

Is there something I need to download or what program do I assign to these items. I'm so confused. I've looked everywhere for an answer. Please help.
