Thinkpad X1 carbon hotkeys stopped working

Q: Thinkpad X1 carbon hotkeys stopped working

TP X1 carbon with Windows 7/64 bit Some Hotkeys do not workF4, F7, F8 ,F9, F10, F11, F12 do NOT work.Caps lock does not display on screem All this happened at the same time. Might be because of an update (either Windows or Lenovo) but I am not sure.Tried the recommended fixes and installed the hotkey tool n1qvub3w.exe but that did not solve it. It is extremely frustrating to have this issue without any proper resolution.Any help is appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Members, Recently, I noticed some of the special Hotkey Fn keys stopped working. Here's the breakdown: Working:F1 (speaker on/off)F2 (vol down)F3 (vol up)F5 (screen bright -)F6 (screen bright +)Stopped Working:F4 (mic on/off)F7 (project)F8 (wifi on/off)F9 (settings)F10 (search)F11 (open apps?)F12 (all apps?)This happened once before and a driver/BIOS update fixed it, but this time, nothing seems to fix it. I am an Inside Track candidate for Windows updates, and the keys themselves work (the normal Fn keys work). Searching Google and the Forums comes up empty. Specs: Product: 20FQ001VUSBIOS: N1FET63W 1.37Windows 10 Pro 64-bit Version 1803 Build 17134.167Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad Version 9.0.2.2 All updates completed (Lenovo and Windows). Any thoughts/ideas?Thanks!-Matt

I am not sure if I am in the right forum, but this whole site is so difficult to navigate. There are no suppot numbers, and no-one to call. I am on a different computer now because my keyboard on my X1 Carbon Thinkpad has suddenly stopped working. I can get a keyboard to come up on the screen (and type in using external mouse) but none of the keys on the actual keypad work. None of the keys work. Some of the FN keys work. I have tried Ctrl + Alt + Del.

HI there I am having a peculiar problem. The right-side USB port (the one next to the Ethernet port) of my 3rd Gen X1 Carbon (model 20BT) has stopped working. Windows reports two USB controllers, and Linux does the same. The ethernet port works as expected. I even replaced the USB/RJ45 system card and the problem persists: The Ethernet port works, the USB port does not. No peripheral is being recognised (I have tried a wireless mouse, a usb flash drive and a Yubikey) and no power seems to be available from the port.  I was thinking that if there was some issue with the motherboard then one of the USB host chips would not be recognised, but this does not seem to be the case. I am now thnking whether it would be worth it to replace the motherbaord or just purchase another (used) machine. The warranty has expired. Any ideas? Thank you! Frixos

Hi frixosk, Does it mean that the one on the Left-side still works? If yes, you may consider to work with a handy USB hub like this.

I recently purchased a refurbished Gen 2 X1 Carbon with Windows 10 Pro preinstalled by the refurbisher. Of course there's a problem with the hotkey fn+function bar. I rolled back the Lenovo OP power management driver from the August 2018 release to the November 2017 release (which seems to let the f1-f12 keys actually function) but the ability of clicking the fn key to change the bar layout was disabled the moment Windows 10 starts (but could switch during a reboot so the bar is working in bios...).  I've gained some limited functionality for the fn key by running the r0vu16e.exe installer with Windows 7 compability so the dirvers and associated files install locally. The installation program itself, however, freezes (Windows 10 claims it is incompatible with Windows 10 and recommends Windows 7). HOWEVER, I've found if I start the laptop and run the file "c:\drivers\hotkey\driver\tposd.exe" I can restore limited functionality to the fn key - I can now switch the bar from displaying the default function keys to displaying brightness, volume, search, microphone and webcam. While I'm happy enough with these two bars being displayed, I know the bar has other displays. Is there, in January 2019, an official or best way to get this bar working under Windows 10? Or should I rest on my wonky laurels?

Hello,Today I updated my Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen with the latest drivers recommended by Lenovo Vantage program, as well as the latest Windows 10 Pro updates. After conducting those updates, I can no longer sign in using the Fingerprint sensor. When I open the Device Manager to check the status of the Biometric Device driver, it shows the following message: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"The sign in option using the fingerprint does not even show up in the Windows settings for Sign In. Things I have already tried:1) Update the driver through the Device Manager 2) Download and reinstall the fingerpring driver from the Lenovo drivers website3) Reset fingerprint settings in the BIOS and making sure it is enabled4) Change configuration in "gpedit.msc" -> computer configuration -> administrative templates -> windows components -> biometrics -> allow the use of biometrics and allow users to log on using biometrics set to enabled None of the 4 attempts above solved the problem. Can anyone please provide any solution for this case? It looks like a lot of people have been experiencing this issue and no one from Lenovo provided a clear and definitive solution. The latest drivers must have bugs and, in my opinion, Lenovo must stop distributing them until this issue is fixed. Thank you very much.Best.

Ok, after trying many things to solve this issue, I turn to the community to try to help.I have a T420, i5-2520M, Windows 7 Pro, SP1, 64-bit. Everything was working fine until I switched off the wireless function using the manual switch on the right hand side of the laptop next to the DVD drive. When I switched it back on, the wireless network did not reactivate by itself. After waiting a little time, I hit Fn+F5 to see if it needed switching on via that control. The window came up with a message saying I needed to flick the manual switch back which I already done. I switched it off and back on anyway still with the F5 hotkey window open and nothing happened.I decided to try re-starting the laptop which brought the wireless network back on - except now the hotkeys, microphone mute, brightness controls etc won't work. The only hotkey that works is Fn+PgUp for the keyboard LED.I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Hotkey Features Integration software twice, once with the Lenovo Power Manager driver installed and once uninstalled. I've also reinstalled the Lenovo Power Manager but it makes no difference. The On Screen display works for Caps Lock, Volume and Mute.Would it have anything to do with the Windows Management Instrumentation (as it's listed as one of the dependencies)? I don't believe this has anything to do with my problem but I recently swapped the motherboard as my GPU was failing. I bought a 6th gen X1 Carbon in November for $1258 (after tax). Last week the speakers stopped working. I rebooted it, there was a wierd noise, and it never turned back on. I was unable to ever get it back on. I sent it into the Depot and their response was that it had water damage and we would need to approve billing for the following components:LNV-00HW562FRU Yoda-2 Audio Subcard-JYT1LNV-01YR210PLNR WIN i7-8550U 16G TPM21LNV-01YR421ASM Case Base Cover Black1 The total repair would cost $733, nearly half the laptop's cost. I asked for pictures, and they sent me one: Picture I've never spilled anything on the laptop (only 5 months old) and it has been used on a desk away from liquids, so I have no idea how this happened (or if it happened). My questions are: 1. I escalated the request, but what other options to I have to fight this?2. Could this picture have an alternative cause that would be covered under the warranty? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

In the last couple days my X1 carbon 5th gen (with its warrenty coming to an end in 2 weeks) has started to do the weirdest thing. While every other FKeys work perfectly, the first three, those who control volume and mute and un-mute have stopped working.  I checked every possible driver update every day, multiple times since then and nothing seams to work. I also have rebooted and - miracle - the 3 keys started working again ... for a couple seconds before stopping once more. The only thing I have not tried is to reinstall windows, but I must submit my masters thesis pretty soon, so if I can manage to fix this problem without spending a whole day reinstalling everything on my laptop, I'd be eternally grateful.  Ideas?

Hi. I've been having X1 carbon 5th gen for a few months and have been satisfied with it.But today I found out that the USB port located on left side is not working properly. Here are the symptoms:- USB storage such as USB sticks or portable HDD work fine, and data get transferred normally.- It also charges smartphones and other devices that can be charged by USB.- It does not detect corded inputs such as external keypad, mouse, and, keyboard. The USB port located on right side works perfectly. I find it to be really weird with this problem. Input devices do not work at all when USB storages work just fine. I have tried reinstalling Windows fully, installed all the latest updates including the latest BIOS, have set the BIOS settings to default, and nothing worked.  I'm curious if it could be some driver or BIOS driver issue or pure hardware defect. Has anyone experienced this? If there are other things I could try before sending it for repair please let me know. Thank you!

Please help, i use this pc for work and college stuff and if the only remaining usb port dies, this machine is pretty much useless for the kind of stuff i do.

I've just updated my X1 Carbon 3rd Generation to Windows 10. and there are three problems. I'm posting them in one message because they may be related. The Intel Chpset Driver from the support website will not install. It geest as far as the Intel branded installer then says it can't find "setupchipsetx64.msi", even if you browser to the file location.Intel Management Engine 12 appears to install without error messages but every time I run System Update it says it needs to be installed, so either it hasn't installed or it has but System Update doesn't recognise it.The cellular connection option has disappeared from Windows 10 and the Lenovo Wireless Power Settings app. My Sierra Wireless EM7345 appears without error in Device Manager under Network Adapters, it also appears as a GNSS Sensor undeer Sensors, but Windows cannot start this device because its configuration information is missing or damaged in the registry (error 19). It appears in Network Adaptors with a strong signal and is enabled but there's just no way of using it.I have of course installed ALL the updates from th support website apart from the two I've noted which won't install and the two enterprise updates which I don't need.. Windows Update also says the system is up to date. Very disapointing because the 4G adaptor was an expensive option to add to this laptop.

Is there a way we can change the touchpad Reverse scrolling option (Scroll --> Two Finger Scrolling --> Switch Direction) on the X1 Carbon through an automated way. We see that after Windows 10 upgrade, the scroll option on the touchpad has been changed. So doing it manually it works but we want to automate it either through a registry change or some other method. Yes manual changes works perfectly.

Recently I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 Pro, before this I have no clue if the webcam was working but since trying to use the Camera app I have noticed there is no feed.I then went looking around, having installed (all auto-update recommended) applications for the laptop from the Lenovo support and drivers page. I noticed that there was no Intergrated Camera driver in the list, I then decided to install it manually. I was then met with a "Can't find the device, Abort install!"I have attempted to use FN+F6 to enable and disable the camera, even with restarts in between. I have also gone through the BIOS and enabled/disabled the camera to see if it would then detect it and nothing has worked.Has anyone else had an issue like this and been able to resolve it?

Hi guys, I recently got hold of my new X1 carbon and decided to do a thorough firmware update with vantage. When the trackpoint utility firmware 1.0.0.3 was installed, my laptop flashed with an installation failure notice and rebooted. After that, the trackpoint as well as the mouse above the touchpad no longer worked. I tried the advanced setting in control panel, but the entire trackpoint configuration option was blacked out. Does anybody experience similar issues with this update and have any suggestions on how to do a home fix for this? Hi all, I have a problem with my X1 Carbon. My X1 carbon was infected with virus couple days ago. No sweat, did fresh installation through windows 10 recovery option. Everything works fine until noticed there are three issues happening and I could not figure out what is wrong with it.1. The hotkey (function key) does not work anymore. F1-F3 works normally, F5-F6 as well. Besides that, all the function key does not respond to any command. I have installed the Hotkey packages for X1 Carbon as per some Lenovo rep instruction in the other topic, but it still does not work.  I suspect that the System Interface Foundation Device driver which controls the function key through Imcontroller is somehow corrupted. Everytime I opened the Lenovo Companion app, hardware settings, keyboard, it pops up a notification saying "This app could not run on your PC, to find a version for your PC, check with the software publisher. Further checks through process, pointed out to the Imcontroller, which I suspect controls the function key settings.System Interface Foundation driver installed version 1.1.12.0Fn and function keys driver version 9.0.0.6 (BUT, in device status says "No driver installed for this device") 2. I noticed that my mouse configuration changes to windows default everytime it wakes up from sleep. This is incredibly frustrating. I followed some instruction to disable some settings in the registry editor. Still does not work. Any help is appreciated.&nbs... Read more

My touchscreen is not working and I am on the phone with Lenovo Support. They have no clue but quickly suggest I return the PC.It took longer than expected to get this laptop (by weeks, from China) and now Lenovo support wants me to send it back without even trying to help resolve.  They claim the issue is the LCD but didn't do any debug. When I said I would send it back and get a refund they said OK. Very poort experience all around

After windows 10 updated itself to version 1703, the TrackPoint on my X1 Carbon stopped working. It's enabled in the BIOS, and uninstalled and reinstalled the Ultranav drivers. When I go to the Ultranav settings the "Enable TrackPoint" section is grayed out. It there a new driver or fix for this issue?

Hi, Thinkpad Ultra Docking Station - 40AJ0135EU Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th - 20KH006JMXBIOS: N23E56W 1.31 Recently installed updates: ThinkPad BIOS Update - 10 [64], version 1.31Synaptics Touchpad Firmware Update Tool - 10 [64], version PR2698617 / PR 2812761ThinkPad Hotkey Features Integration Package Setup - 10 [64], version 9.0.2.15 Everything was working fine before these updates, but now I can't get the wireless mouse and keyboard (usb dongle) or the usb headset to work connected to the dock. Works fine when connected directly to the X1 Carbon. I suspect the BIOS update, anyone got any tips? The dock is listed as "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" under Windows settings. I have of course tried to uninstall/remove device and install it again, but it won't work.  I have a colleague who also has a X1 Carbon, with recent updates and his X1 Carbon works perfectly with my dock. And similarly, my X1 Carbon works perfectly with his dock, which is a Thunderbolt 3 Dock. Edit: Tried to update Dock firmware with driver from https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/no/en/products/monitors-and-projectors/docks/thinkpad-ultra-docking-sta... But problem still remains When I try to run automatic scan for updates through Lenovo support I get the failure message: "The package catalog for your system is currently being updated on the System Update Server. Please try again later"

Hello Gurus, May I have your time to help on this case? My thinkpad model is X1 Carbon 3rd generation 20BS, which has run smoothly for years with customized touchscreen hardware. From last week, I suddenly noticed that "touchscreen" is not in operation and "wired USB mouse" can't be recognized by Win10. When checking their status in Device Manager, it shows their drivers aren't in installed. The detailed screenshot from Device Manager is as the bottom. I have tried following ways to solve-out, but doesn't work:1, Remove the unknown devices from Device Managers, then restart to make the OS to reinstall the drivers again, but touchscreen and USB mouse still don't work;2, Try to find touchscreen driver from Lenovo support portal, but there is no particular link to download for updating the driver;3, Remove "Mice and other pointing devices" from Device Manager for installation, but seems nothing to do with "touchscreen" and "USB mouse", still not work. All above ways can't help my problem out. Would you please suggest that? Thank you in advance. Leo.Touchscreen driver missed in win10

Title says it all really. This stopped working after the last major Windows 10 update (the one that introduced the three-finger horizontal scroll for scrolling through active applications). All other gestures seem to work OK, only the 2-finger scroll gesture has stopped working. I have all the latest updates installed, and all the latest drivers.
