I created a backup of my hard drive files onto a CD. It contains very important data. Yet when I put the CD into my CD drive, I can hear it spinning and trying to be read, but I get a window that says something like "Searching for Auto Play" or "Seeking/starting Auto Play", then it just hangs there forever and freezes the rest of my computer - until I take out the CD. It's obviously trying to seek an autorun file, but as far as I know, none of my data files on that CD include any autorun files! Why would it do this? Is there a way to turn off the autorun feature?
I have Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron laptop. Thanks!
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
hi all
I am a little unsure where to place this as a topic, thats why it is in the general section.
I am trying to change my group policy setting so that auto run doesn't work. I have to get some data of an external hard drive that is infected.
as i am running Home premium I can't access it. Will this regedit work for windows 7
One quick trick prevents AutoRun attacks
cheers
Why don't you just change it in control panel autorun
Read other 9 answersIs there a way to turn off auto play on some of my drives. I want my DVD and blu ray only to be auto play. I know the old tweakui in xp did this, but now I have windows 7. I don't know if this works with windows 7.
Thanks
Windows 7's Tweak UI is the Ultimate Windows Tweaker. I haven't tried it so I'm not sure if it can disable AutoPlay for you.
How to Configure AutoPlay Settings in Windows 7
A little FYI for everyone, since there are articles out today, how people were never told about the hidden little feature that turns off video auto-play for Facebook. See below for the instructions how to disable.
Everyone, there are two ways to disable the Video autoplay feature for Facebook. If you use a Web Browser, go to https://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=videos
In the iPhone/IPad App, you have to go to Settings for the device, then scroll down to "Facebook", then select to go into the Facebook settings for iOS. Then choose "Video". Then just turn off or set to Wifi.
For Android devices, it is in the App settings (three horizontal bars), then scroll down to "App Settings", choose "Video Auto-Play".
Thank you for the info. Anytime you have an issue with F/B or even your mail or Website. Always go to your Settings to
find what it is that you are looking for. Whether to turn on/off.
This applies also to you sharing from you Internet. Make sure you go to settings and "Mark" do no allow users' to connect to
my connection. There is 2 questions in your internet that may fool you. Just make sure that both are marked, DO NOT allow
other users' to connect to my account.
The reason I say this: If someone is outside your home with a laptop, they can actually connect to your computer and you
dont' even know it. Make sure your Airplane Mode is shut off as well. Leave nothing open!! To many hackers' and thieves'
in the world today. If the can get you I.P. Address it is unreal what can happen to your computer. Hackers' have to be the worst.
I would like to completely disable auto run / auto play in Windows Media Player 12 on Windows 7, and I cannot find a way to do so. I've searched the web endlessly, and there are lots of suggestions, but nothing works. I have disabled every type of auto run / auto play I can find, but if Windows Media Player is open and I insert a flash drive, CD, or DVD, whatever I'm playing is interrupted by what was inserted even if it's not media. Just a plain, blank flash drive does this.
Has anyone else been able to figure this out?
I am running windows 7 x64 ultimate and in the last couple of weeks my computer will not auto run anything. auto run box pops up and the immediately closes. I've tried setting the "turn auto play off" setting to disabled and I've made sure that every setting in control panel is set to "ask me every time". I appreciate any help you can give me. THANKS!
I'm stumped as to why when inserting a disk into either of my drives that nothing happens! I've even (I think) checked the autoplay setting in the properties of the drives and I still can't get it to work. Any idea's..?
Hi Mrmars...
so when you right click on your CD/DVD drive and select Properties and then the AutoPlay tab, each of the content types (Music files, pictures, video files etc) has a check in 'Prompt me each time to choose an action'?
making a backup copy of my call of duty cds using game copy. when it started to copy disc 1 it asked if i wanted to disable autoplay because some errors might occur. now i can't get it to start when cd is inserted. when icon is used the cd contents comes up. it will load disc 1 but won't auto play disk 2 and continue with install. everything loads fine with original discs in cdrom. how do i get auto play back on the cd burner?????
thanx
Complaint was audio CDs won't play. Think problem is actually autoplay doesn't work. It is enabled for the drives/files. Tried Microsoft autoplay repair tool, Tweak, checked services. Music CDs just won't autoplay

Bought a Lenovo Flex 4 laptop for my grandson but it did not come with a DVD played. So I had to buy an external LG - Ultra Slim 8x Max. DVD Write Speed External USB DVD±RW/CD-RW Drive - Black
Model: SP80NB60.
He likes to play DVD movies and wanted to play the DVD movies on this laptop, but we were told we had to download and install a free DVD player program. He downloaded two, not knowing which would be better.
VLC and AunPlayer. He tried to play the DVD with the AunPlayer installed, but when he input the DVD disk it didn't start right away in the AunPlayer. My neighbor said there is some way in Win 10 where we can indicate which program (AunPlayer) we would want to open and play the DVD as soon as the DVD was put into the external DVD player.
Does anyone know what we would have to do to the DVD start playing as soon as we put it in the external drive. As soon as it was inserted it would open right away in AunPlayer or VLC (We don't know which one is better).
Thank you.
Think I found the answer = Control Panel / Auto Play / DVD / VLC
No matter what I do every time I put a blank disk 9n Ashampoo opens automatically. How can I fix this ?
HI,
Using XP Pro
I notice when right clicking the DVD drive and selecting the Auto-Play tab the option to play DVD movies is set to Power DVD (which is what I want) I do have the option to select Windows Media if I want.
But say for music files, there is only the Windows Media Option to choose, is there a way of having Power DVD showing here?
I know when inserting a music disc (i.e mp3) I can use option to Pay with... and also File types to change....but just curious abot the above I have mentioned?
Previously under Win 7, I could insert an SD card into the slot and I would get a pop-up box asking me what I wanted to do with the pictures, and I would select "Save to file". Then another box opened allowing me to select which folder to import the pictures. Does that feature still exist in Win 10? I went to the Auto Play page and changed the preferences to "Import" but nothing changed. I insert the SD card and have to search the computer for the file in order to view.
start/my computer/right click dvd-cd drive (usually drive 'D') /properties/autoplay tab, then appropriate settings.
click 'prompt me each time...', if you want a different media player for different types of media.
I made the mistake of trying Tuneup Utility 2011 and uninstalled it but now I can't get auto play to work. I went into control panel and all my settings are there but don't work. I also have my DVD burner and Bluray burner showing as CD drives in Devices with removable storage. They work but I have to start PowerDVD and load from it. I would try system restore but Intel corrected my SM Bus Controler chip set problem. If I restore I'll have to start from scratch. Isn't there an way to get auto play and the ID's for my optical drive back without restoring?
Thanks
chas638
I assume you already went to my computer, right clicked on the optical drive in question, selected properties, clicked on the autoplay tab, and set the type of recording to the proper player?

I have 2 cd roms
1) Asus Cd 5480/AH
2) Philips Cd/DVD8421
When I insert a CD (audio) there used to be a menu appears asking me what I want to do. Now all I get is a open folder to view files. I have been to the microsoft site and made changes they requested to the registry. I have also opened up the Cd rom properties and reset the defaults in the auto play tab. Even if I set the Cd to open in a different folder, nothing changes and I still get an open folder to view files. I am using a HP AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (Windows XP). Could anyone please help me to resolve this issue, Thanks.
Right click on your CD drive in My computer, then properties. Then click the autoplay tab, and set music to play with windows media player( or what u use).
I am running Windows Home Premium Edition X64 bit SP2. When I insert a CD or DVD into my disc drive my discs do not start automatically. I have to manually go to MY COMPUTER and select the drive where the devise is loading. In CONTROL PANEL after selecting AUTO PLAY icon I checked "use auto play for all media devises". This feature used to work, but it no longer does. Hopefully some of you have had this problem and have solved it. Thank you for your help.,
Go to start search box and type regedit
look for the following key and check its setting.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom > Autorun
Set reg D Word value to 1
EDIT Don't change anything else!
I can not seem to get autoplay to work I have been to settings of the drive and cheecked them I have also downloaded the microsoft autoplay repair tool. Any other ideas.

Suddenly my CDs and DVDs don't "auto play". I can't find where to turn the Auto Play feature on for the CD Palyer and the DVD Player. Can someone help me please?

IS THERE A WAY TO CHECK THE AUTO PLAY FEATURE ( windows 2000)
Lights work cd rom spins and thats it. Thanks
try this fix http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...b6-e8fa-45c4-a171-1b389cfacdad&DisplayLang=en
Also put a disk in with something on it and if it doesn't Auto play, go My Computer right the drive it is in and choose Auto play
Please forgive me if I'm not in the right forum. My autoplay function is being change automatically and I can't figure out why. I have to load what ever ie.. jumpdrive, sd card, thumbdrive, cd/dvd and so on then the last program I used to do what ever with said media thats what opens. Instead of giving me the choice to pick what I want it to do. I have to go in manually and change everything to default and click save. All is ok untill I use say copy a music cd and it starts all over again. Say this time I have a picture cd, I put it in and the copy cd opens up. I have to go in agian change it back and start agian. It just a pain in the butt. Is there a way to stop this from happening on a permanent basiss.
That would depend - what software do you have installed that changes the auto play settings?

I urgently need to repair my Vista Home Premium on Toshiba Satellite to factory state. However when I tried to copy my documents after putting DVD in the drive the Auto Olay dialogue hasn?t appeared. Then following advice on the net I had to change registry through regedit. But I found out that all the registries are at default, which meant that I couldn?t follow instructions. How do I get out of this?
Does the DVD have anything on it?
Have you tried just using a different DVD or USB?
Auto Play work just fine but the handlers or actions somehow got deleted and I was wondering how to fix them without re-installing windows. The handlers I need is take no action and open folder to view folders.
when i insert CD or USB or camera card auto play would open a window and ask what i wanted to do with it . This does not happen anymore and i have to go to the appropriate drive to open these things, the auto play box is checked in the control panel. I understand this is common in Vista and it has just happenned to my daughters HP laptop. I have tried the fixes from Microsoft Forums, some say to go into registry to manually fix but i am not that advanced or brave enough to try. Any other ideas.
Thanks
If you back up your registry as suggested in the Microsoft solution, you should have no problem following the steps in Method #2. Time to be brave: The AutoRun feature or the AutoPlay feature does not work when you insert a CD-ROM in the CD drive

These are my settings, flash drives do not open explorer when plugged in.
Nothing happening when I drop in a Blu-ray, nothing happening when I drop in a blank CD
They show up in Explorer, but no auto play happening at all.
Any ideas why not ? TIA
SKU : Windows Vista Home premium ,
Issue: Autoplay function is not working, I have tried to enable auto play from default programs, tried following this link : http:// http://vistasupport.mvps.org/autorun_autoplay_don't_work_when_cddvd_is_inserted.htm When i try to edit Registry ,to my surprise Autoplay is not listed under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom , Please assist.
My DVD drive will no longer auto play either DVD/CD's. I can still play music CD's by opening up my media player but nothing else will work. ie: Microsoft Zoo Tycoon - I click on start game which then asks for the CD. Insert CD but all that happens is a window opens up with the files that are on the the CD and thats the end of that.
I have tried the auto play under properties tab, have checked under the Device Manager and have checked for updated drivers. All these seem OK.
I have download the Autofix from Microsoft and ran it. Under the Auto Play V2 event there appears to be a problem. I click repair but then get a message that either the device is malfunctioning or that the wizard cannot detect the problem.
I am running Windows XP SP2 with an internal Sony DVD RW DW-Q28A drive. The computer is made by Mesh and is approx. 3 years old.
Sorry to waffle on and hope that somebody can help.
The only thing I can suggest would be to find the burner in Device Manager, right click, uninstall it then reboot.
when i plug my usb or hdd into the computer its not giving the auto play options. nothing pops up.
usb will still be in explorer, just not poping up when i plug it in.
any ideas what could be causing and how to fix??
I'm not sure what happened, but now whenever I insert a DVD (movie), the movie will not play automatically. Instead the folder showing Audio_TS and Video_TS appears. This happens with any DVD I insert. I checked "Properties" for my E: drive, and went to AutoPlay, and everything appears to be fine. That is, I highlighted which Video player I'd like to use. But to no avail.
Any help is appreciated. TIA.

The window that use to pop up asking what to use for the disk i put in no longer does that..I've tried using the properties of the disc drive and applying propt me each time to chose an action still no luck..
My Musicmatch no longer pops up to play cd's or mp's anymore either.
I re assocated them to it..
Any help would be great

I burned a CD-R at 1x speed and all my CD
players (auto,stereo,computer) could read it
w/no problem. The next one I burned at 2x
speeed and the auto CD player does not read
it the others will. Did the speed setting
cause this problem? Is this common?
Some older cd players will not play cdr's
The new standard on CD players is "Multi read"
Also if you did not close the session on the burning by making sure that you are not going to add more songs later. This will also cause problems.

My CR ROM drive does not auto play CDs. Hour glass sometimes starts and then nothing happens. Sometimes I hear the CD spinning and nothing happens. Plase advise. Thanks.
Try this:
Double click on "My Computer". In the window that opens, right click on your cd rom drive, and click on "Properties". When that window opens, click on the "AutoPlay" tab. Click in the circle, next to "Select an action to perform". Then click on the "Restore Defaults" button. Click on "Apply" button, and then the "OK" button.
See if that puts you back, where you want to be.........
Good luck! Let us know how it goes?
When I put a CD into my cd player on my Presario notebook, nothing happens. I went to my computer, auto play, and checked "open files in explorer", but not even that happens. When I checked the different files to see what I want to automatically open, I saw "mixed content", "music", etc. I tried most, but when I put a cd in, nothing happens.
I would like it to automatically open the software. How can I do this?
Thanks!
Good evening to all.
I decided to make an image of my C drive on my windows ten spare laptop,Using the free Macrium Reflect software.
followed all the info on how to proceed with the software,It all went well I burnt the recovery disc as directed.
Now this is where things got a bit wrong,I went to place the recovery disc into the drive and of course started the laptop up then when it came to press on the respective key on the keyboard,The next thing I saw was that the optical drive had opened the recovery disc up and all the contents were showing in the file explorer.
How do I overcome this problem has it got something to do with the settings in the auto run not to open the disc.
Any help Please.
Hi.
Update to my posting I did over come that auto run.
Now when I insert the recovery disc in the optical and connect the external drive that I have made the backup of windows 10.
Start machine up to test the recovery disc yes it starts and upon pressing F9 on keyboard to access the recovery disc it comes to the stage tap any key to run from CD Or DVD when I select any key it takes me straight to me windows.
Shouldn't that option take me to the external drive that the backup is made.????
Help Please.
This is trivial but it is got me bugged. When I insert a disc into my dvd or burner I do not get prompted on what to open it with or it does not play automatically. I use to get prompted on what action to select. I have checked the auto play tab under both drive properties and they are set properly. I have selected them both ways, rebooted, so on and so on. I am thinking it is disabled somewhere else in xp but I dont know where. Another thing is when I put a disc in for example a dvd it shows the title of the dvd if I look at the drive in my computer but if I put in another dvd it will still show the old title even if I play the new one. I select the refresh action under my computer and still shows the old title.
Any clues?
Ok just used Ashampoo CD burner to get some songs burned onto a cd so i can play them as i drive.
But; a huge but when i play them they don t play automatically one after another as they should; i have to click on every song every time yikes so whats that about and how do get auto play to work ? thanks
I have used the Ashampoo burner but it was a while ago.
As I remember, and in common with most burners, there are a range of burning options to produce different types of disc. For example a data DVD has a different file structure from a music CD. It is important when setting the options before burning a music CD that you choose 'Music CD' or 'Play in a CD player' or similar wording before you start the burning process.
As a check, put your CD in a drive on your computer and look at it in Windows Explorer. The various tracks should have names ending in .CDA - Track 1.CDA; Track 2.CDA and so on and the reported size should be 1 KB each. This has got nothing to do with the size of the music files as they are hidden. What you see in windows Explorer is a type of catalogue file.
If this is what shows up when you look at the disc in Windows Explorer then it means the disc is faulty, just make another. If you see something other than the above, burn it again but check your settings carefully before you hit the 'Burn now' button.

For some reason the autoplay does not function when I insert CD with either music or programs, ie. when I insert a program cd, I need to go to My Computer, click on the CD drive and use the *.exe to start installation. I did set the autostart in the properties of the CD Drive did I miss something?
Thanks Guys
when i insert a cd in cd drive or dvd drive, it will not play. it has error message 'e not valid win32 application'
I can access it through right click-explore,

This is a fresh install every thing else seems fine (so far) except there is no auto play when it's set to and also, I can't rent a dvd movie and watch it cause it won't play no matter what I try Thanks for all advice/info.
There's no native support for DVD video in W8/8.1. You need to install a third party program like VLC or Pot Player or something in that style.
Read other 3 answersDoes anybody know of a third party add-on for Power Point that will make use of the auto play feature of Windows?

Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe
* Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
* By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
* Click on Install.
* It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
* Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
* Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
* Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Hi
Does anyone know how I can remove a program from the Auto Play menu? I used to have Nero installed but uninstalled it but Nero Photo Snap is still listed in the Auto Play menu. Any advice is much appreciated.
Many Thanks
You can remove AutoPlay options a couple of ways. You can do it through the registry manually (not recommended) or you can use a utility like CleanHandlers to get rid of broken stuff. You can find CleanHandlers at:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/autoplayhandlers.htm
If you /really/ want to do it manually, I can tell you where to go for that as well. I'll leave it out for the moment, though.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes,
