Slow Windows Media Player startup when playing MP3 files

Q: Slow Windows Media Player startup when playing MP3 files

Hello there and apologies if it has been posted before (though I couldn't find it anywhere). I have two PCs running Windows Vista Business 32-bit since the RTM version. In other words they have survived long enough to download updates via Windows Updates, install both Service Packs etc.For some time now I experience the 10 - 25 second delay when playing a MP3 file in WMP. This delay appears to happen only once per Windows boot. Now, this does sound odd so I've tried to troubleshoot myself. When playing an MP3 file WMP launches mfpmp.exe file and this is how it's meant to be even though the files aren't DRM protected. Using Process Monitor I've found that before the process launches wmplayer.exe "pokes around" %systemroot%\system32\catroot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} folder. By "poking around" I mean querying file information (among other things) on most if not on every file. This introduces the delay during startup of playback as there are about 1400 *.cat files around. It can be clearly seen in Process Monitor summary that it takes even 25 seconds (depending on other hard disk activity) to "get through" the folder. It appears that the module responsible for file activity is CI.dll (code integrity). I would speculate that verifying the signatures (or whatever it's doing at this point) is a prerequisite to the launch of mfpmp.exe which plays the MP3 file. However WMP is checking the *.cat files that doesn't appear to be relevant to media playback (like the Remote Assistance update etc). The issue also happens if I launch WMP first and then select MP3 file from Media Library. The delay occurs as soon as I attempt to play the file. Afterwards it's all OK until the next reboot or (sometimes) until the next day.I took a look at a prefetch file for wmplayer.exe and I could see that over time the files from catroot folder are mentioned there as it just gets a little faster in the future. Nevertheless it's a little annoying. I've disabled the "Check for publisher's certificate revocation" setting via Internet Options. According to CAPI2 log it seemed that wmplayer.exe was trying to obtain those from the network. It didn't really help with the *.cat files scan. I've tried to disable WMP plugins, turn off visualization, disable all sound enhancements in the Windows Audio properties. Unfortunately if didn't help. I believe there is no other software running in the backgrund that could considerably slow things down (if anything there is an antivirus software on one PC and Windows Defender only on the other).Removing the oldest *.cat files as well as mfpmp.exe seems pretty dangerous. My questions are:1. Have anyone noticed the same issue or is it just me and those two PCs?2. Is there any way to disable code integrity checks or limit them (daily, monthly, per process)?3. Is there something else I should try? Thanks for any input you can give me.

Preferred Solution: Slow Windows Media Player startup when playing MP3 files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My new laptop got my old music files from my old laptop via third party computer on a stick and media player 12 will not play wma files.  The files that won't play are ones I had the cd for.  I have tried several things none of which fixed it
to include contacting Microsoft and letting them run the computer.  The sfc scan has been run twice, the media player has been uninstalled and installed something  like three times.  VLC and iTunes downloaded and files downloaded to iTunes have
not converted to mp3 as expected, perhaps it is something with that I am not doing.  Many people on this and I appreciate the efforts

My uncle got DSL a couple of months ago and I've downloaded several large and small video clips and saved them to cd-rw's so that I could bring them home and put them on my computer, but I've encountered a problem when I try to view some of the clips. Some clips say ANOBOLIC when I try to open them and they won't play on either my laptop or my desktop pc, but I can open and view them fine on my uncle's computer. What do I need to download to fix this problem?

The other problem that I am having is that I saved some video clips that range from 15 to 30 minutes, and when I put the cd in either my laptop or desktop pc a couple of the clips say that they are 1 or 2 minutes when they are really 15 to 30 minute clips. I try to play them and they play for 1 or 2 minutes pause at the end and then move to the next clip, and when I fast forward the clip I am able to see some more of what wasn't shown in the first 1 or 2 minutes but it won't finish playing the whole clip. Again, I am able to view all of the clips perfectly on my uncle's computer.

At first I thought that the problem was with the cd-rw's, but since they work fine on my uncle's computer I have to believe that it is a problem with the media player. I've tried playing them with Realplayer and a couple other media players, but I keep having the same problem. Hello,

I have a memory card camcorder that records video as .ASF files (MPEG4 I think too) and until now have had no problem playing back the video files that I have recorded.

I've recently had to do a full system wipe of my computer due to various issues. Now I have a bang up to date version of Windows Media Player 10 as well as all the codecs packs. However the .ASF videos just won't play properly, the videos stop and start every second with huge gaps in between each frame. Windows Media Player also crashes with playing these files, I tried RealPlayer which also delivers exactly the same results.

I'm totally stuck with what to do,

Thanks for any help you will be able to give me in advance,

Martin

A:Trouble playing ASF files and Windows Media Player

Sounds like it might be a codec problem. Do a google search for a program called gspot (you can guess why I won't do one at work -.-;; ) It opens a file and reads what codec's its trying to use. Giving that output about the audio and video codec would let us know what those files are using in particular and can hunt down a way to fix it.

you can roll it back to wmp9 in add/remove-windows componets and delete the wmp10 install file. then redownload it. but you may have some conflict or it could be just a bad file. i like 9 better then 10 anyway.

Got a new computer at work (Dell Optiplex 760 w 3.25 GB RAM - running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3). When I try to play my music files (originally downloaded from purchased CD's on my old computer) on this new computer through Windows Media Player the sound is stuttering. Randomly. My IT dept. can't figure it out. I was running WMP v. 9 and today I updated to v. 11. It doesn't matter. Still stuttering. I have little Bose desktop speakers. When I go into the control panel on my computer and click on the "sounds and audio devices" icon it says SoundMax HD Audio. I'm assuming that's the sound card? The music files are local on my hard drive. It's driving me crazy....and I'm not a sophisticated computer user. Help. Thank you.

I have just bought a new machine with Vista Home Premium and it is running great but is not playing video files. I can hear the audio but no video. This happens regardless of whether it is playing inmedia player, or I am creating a DVD in pre installed movie maker or DVD Maker.

Is it just a codec pack or driver files it might be missing... or some other nasty?

Thanks in advance.... Beagleboy.

You could be missing a CODEC, what type of file is it? This utility can tell you: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

There's also a chance that the video card driver needs to be updated, there's lots of little glitches with display drivers at the moment.

Then - for apparently no reason - Media Player decided that it was no longer going to open the files, not even the ones that it had opened previously. It came up with the cood1199 error, but I don't understand why it's stopped playing them as it used to. It's infuriating. I don't want to have to download another program to play them when Media Player should - as it *did* - play them. Is there anything that I can do to get it to play what it used to play?

Have you tried a system restore back to when you know this worked or is this to far in the past? Have you tried to play the files with something like Realplayer. I know that you want to use WMP long term but this would confirm that it is a WMP issue.

Hello,

I have for the last few weeks, experienced an exceptionally slow startup for internet explorer and media player. When I try to start explorer, it freezes for about one minute before you can click on any links on the page. It also does this when a new window or tab is opened. Once the page has opened and the approx. minute lag has passed, it functions normally and I can browse the web. Clicking on any link which opens a new window will again cause this lag, but only on the new page. I can click back to the already opened page and browse normally. I have upgraded to IE 7 but the problem is the same.

For Windows Media player, a movie will open but no controls become available for about 30 seconds. Once the controls are available, it functions normally. If I leave the program open, I can click on different movies and they will pop up and function normally without the lag which is present on the initial startup of the program.

In addition, my on-screen ibm controls for volume have ceased to be displayed and my touchpad/trackpoint won't retain changes made so that only the trackpoint is on, with the touchpad off. It reverts back to certain settings upon computer restart.

I have run Norton, Adaware, cwshredder, AVG, ATF cleaner, Ewido, Kaspersky, Panda, fixwareout, vundofix, registry cleaner, and many others including the ones listed in the preparation section of this site, but the problem persists. A:VERY SLOW Internet Explorer and Media Player Startup

Hi Tom and welcome to TSF.

My name is Iain and I will be helping you clean your system.

There's nothing showing in your log, so let's try an online scan. Could be more of a Windows problem.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan Click on located at the bottom of the page.
A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
Click on then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Post back the Panda log.

The message is kind of strange -- but the bottom line is that Windows Media Player has never come with the mpeg-2 decoder needed for playing DVDs.

For this you must have a 3rd party player installed such as PowerDVD-- or if you don't care about using WMP -- you can view just about anything in VLC: >>

To check whether Windows already has the required decoder, use this:

My windows media player works fine, it is just when I am trying to play a video in both IE7 and Mozilla Firefox, the Windows media player comes up in the browser with the black box and says "ready" but nothign ever plays. I hit hte play button and it does nothing.

Any ideas?

Hi there rathofman,

this sometimes happens if the server is busy, it may be an idea to completely clear your internet cache, history, cookies etc then go back to the page. If the same happens, click refresh on the toolbar a few times to see if that loads the clip or not.

Does this happen on all sites with video clips or just some?

Hello,

I have a windows xp pro sp3 with all updates (as far as i know), 2 gb ram, 320 gig hard drive, radeon ati video card (forgot model number), amd 3200+, not sure why i listed my pc specs but ehh why not. anyways the title says it all, but to break it down, the problem is when i go to play my music in windows media player 11, it will make this terrible screaching sound (and thats for all music no matter what file extension it is .avi .wmv .mp3 etc.) after the screaching sound the music will sound very low then slowly it will begin to make the volume louder and louder till it gets to the correct volume setting that you set it (on computer or physically on the speaker). i have tried to see if other media players does this such as quicktime and itunes and they work fine, its only when playing in windows media player does it give me that screach sound at the beginning of everyone music/movie then it sounds low after a few minutes it will get loud again and sometimes get low volume then it will increase the volume, whats the matter anyone? could it be related to Divx, which i do have it installed on my machine however i am not sure if it all started when i installed divx, wasnt really paying attention nor was i using windows media player when i installed divx, please help its really annoying and would love to get this fixed.

Thank you

Let's find out for sure.

Start > Control Panel > Automatic Updates
Click the link for "Windows Update Web site".
Click the Custom button

What results do you get?

First, try removing Windows Media Player (WMP) 11 in Add/Remove Programs, then reinstall it. Does the problem continue?

If so, try removing DivX. I do not think it is causing the problem, but could not hurt to try. Does it still continue?

FROM WITHIN WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER THERE IS A LINK THAT TAKES ME TO PLUGGINS THAT WILL DO THIS, BUT THOSE PLUGGINS ALL STATE THAT THEY ARE FOR WIN XP. WILL THOSE SAME PLUGGINS WORK IN ME, OR ARE THERE OTHERS THAT I SHOULD DOWNLOAD?
THANKS

We don't help with with illegal stuff here, and DVD ripping is sort of a gray-area. I understand that you own a legal copy of the DVD, but ripping it is still illegal because it uses DeCSS to crack the encryption. So im not sure if I should be helping you here.

That aside, those plugins won't work for you, however PowerDVD will play VOB files for you.

Welcome to SF arkasharma

Do you have any codec packs installed? If yes which one?

We usually suggest Sharks007's codecs. You can get it from here: Download Windows 7 Codecs 3.6.8 - FileHippo.com

Some steps that you may need to follow after installation of Sharks codecs.
Click on the
Scroll down to Shark007s codecs folder.
Expand it and select the settings application by right click run as administrator button.
On the bottom click on Shark007 SUGGESTED settings.
Lastly you will get a confirmation dialogue that all the videos will open with windows media player (but actually they will open with other players as well)
Attached is a picture as reference.

And some prefer the Klite Codec pack from this link: Download K-Lite Codec Pack 8.92 (Full) - FileHippo.com with basic next next next installation steps.

Install either of it but make sure you've removed any other codec packs previously installed.

Let us know how it goes.

Hello, I'm new here and I hope that I can get this fixed,
um well lets see first I'll start with my problem.
I have Windows Media Player 11 it worked fine for a real long time but recently it finally something happened to it. I can hear sound just fine except that I can see no video at all I've tried different videos and nothing all I get is sound, but the weirder thing is that my Enhancements box is completely blank along with the video it won't show any visualizations either. I tried using Windows media classic and it worked fine I also tried iTunes and it was good. I also checked if it can stream any videos but it won't do either but it will stream on firefox. I'm not quite sure what I can do.
