Blank/Distored Dialog Boxes

Q: Blank/Distored Dialog Boxes

Hello, I have been searching high and low for a way to resolve this. I'm hoping someone here can help me. I'm having a problem in Windows 7 (64 bit) where a lot of my prompt/dialog boxes are blank and I can't see the text. This mainly happens on prompt windows, like if I am trying to update or install a program. I am on a Dell XPS 9100, with an Intel Core i7 2.8 GHz processor. It has 3GB of Ram and a 500GB hard drive. If that helps at all.

Can anyone help me fix this error? I've run all kinds of virus/spyware/malware scans, but they don't come up with anything. I've attached some screenshots

Thanks in advance!

Preferred Solution: Blank/Distored Dialog Boxes

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Nothing in the screenshots unfortunately.

I am having an issue in which some dialog boxes (specifically boxes that require input: next, close, etc.) are blank. (see attached) I am unsure of when this began, but I think it occurred around the time that I installed Reimage Plus to help with some other issues. I have since uninstalled Reimage Plus and done a complete malware/virus scan using Malwarebytes and Hitman Pro.
My research suggests that this may be an issue with regsvr32 jscript.dl file. I have tried to reload this file, but I receive a message that says the file was loaded "but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80004005." Continued research of this code suggests a possible registry error. I ran a registry cleaner (I know, not the best thing to do), but the problems continues. The problem also occurs in safe mode.
On a related note, my Windows Update continually fails for a particular update. The update that fails is KB2647753 (see attached). The error code is 80070490. After researching this error code, I downloaded the System Update Readiness Tool from Microsoft. The hotfix was successfully installed (see attached), yet the problem persists.
I appreciate any help.

Hi Nat86 I suggest you to uninstall that Reimage Plus program since it fits in the "PC Booster" category of programs. "PC Booster/Tune Up" programs are part of the worst programs you can install on a system. When it comes to messing up your system (Windows), these are as worst as malware. They are completely worthless and useless to use. The worst is that they'll often take action on your system without you knowing, nor authorizing it, which could lead to your system being altered in a way you don't want it to be or even worst, a "broke" system. Every feature they provide, you can either do it natively under Windows, do it via another standalone executable (which is way easier and safer to use) or they aren't providing something you need. Here's a few examples:Cleaning temporary files: TFC (standalone executable), CCleaner (installed), Cleanmgr.exe (in-built);Managing start-up entries: Autoruns (standalone executable), CCleaner (installed), Task Manager and Registry (in-built);Driver Updater: Not needed, all you need is to go on your manufacturer website so you'll be sure to get the right, official, working drivers for your computer or hardware;Registry Cleaner/Defragger: Completely useless and also dangerous;Disk Defragging: Disk Defrag (in-built), O&O Disk Defrag (installed), Defraggler (installed);Powerful uninstaller: Not needed, only needed when you have to make sure a program is completely uninstalled. Revo Uninstaller have a portable version you can use;"Enhanced" ... Read more

Hi guys, sorry if my english it's a little broken, best regards from Brazil!

I'm having some trouble for a long time now... I already searched a number of foruns and other help websites, but no luck so far. I tried to format my PC, reinstall Windows 7 and nothing.

Basically, when I run some softwares, all different kinds, usually small ones, no problemas when I'm using Microsoft Office, Adobe software, etc... I'm getting blank buttons, menus and dialog boxes. they are fine, until I put the mouse cursor over it, then the go blank/white (like in the images - the first one it's where the "next" button should be, the 2nd one, it's the blank/white spaces, should be some buttons right there)Any ideia what it's going on? Thanks!

What version of Windows 7? What bitrate?

Where did you acquire the windows installation media to "reinstall windows"?

What's the make and model of the computer?

Hi Guys, sorry if my english it's a bit broken, best regards from Brazil!

So, this problem has been plaguing me for a few months now. I lived with it because I could not find a solution in any forum or website. Yesterday I completely formated the PC and reinstaled Windows 7. For my surprise, the problem came back already, I could not belived it. So, what happens it's this:

This does not happens with programs like Microsoft Office or Adobe. Usually only with smaller things, like a game Launcher, smaller installers, etc. Like in the 2nd image, it's a ROM editor for messing with old game boy games.
Those blank spaces should have buttons, however they get like this when I put the mouse cursor over.
They still work, but I can't see what I'm doing.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I am having problems with an Intel video driver.  This started a while ago but I finally tracked down the issue.  At this point, Intel is telling me that this is a Dell Issues because of the compatibility of its drivers.
Background.  Whenever I am trying to close a Word or other Office document, the Save As box usually comes up asking me to Save Save As or Cancel.  Now, this box is blank.  Nothing in there.  I am having the same problem with other applications such as my document management software.  Last week, it started with Chrome.  When I launch, the entire window is blank.
After tried to address this with Microsoft and spending dozens of hours on tech support calls, I started playing around with stuff myself.  Today I checked out the display adapters. I updated everything first to see if that solved the problem.  It did not.  Then I opened Display Adapter items in Device Manager (Windows 10 and I first tried disabling the AMD Radeon driver.  No Change.  Then I tried disabling the Intel HD Graphics 520 driver.  Everything worked (except all the items that rely on this driver, such as Extended Display).  I have tried updating the driver, rolling it back, but nothing helps.  I have run countless anti-virus scans and Windows updates but no help.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate. I've just noticed that most dialog boxes I open are blank (i.e., msconfig), as well as windows with tabs (i.e., msconfig). Even the date and time box! Everything! When I go to more prominent sites such as Facebook, even the buttons on the page are blank!

This obviously was not the case before and has just started in the past 24 hours or so.

I've tried doing some simple research on my own but to no avail. I've found that in older versions of Windows others have had similar issues but seemed to be more isolated to specific programs whereas this effects most things. To solve their issues, they re-registered jscript.dll and that fixed their issue. I tried that, and even though it was successful, it did not solve the issue.

I just finished running System File Checker as well but it didn't locate any issues.

Any help on this matter would be most appreciative. If there is any info you'd like from me, let me know and I will get to you ASAP.

Thanks in advance!

I have a serious problem. One of the client computers I administrate where I work is not displaying text in some dialog/alert boxes and many properties boxes. This started two days ago; today, Internet Explorer does not display web sites correctly: boxes where the user can enter text to search are appearing as small squares too small to type and read, and the buttons in the web sites are reduced to thin lines and no text in them. Finally, Outlook 2000 no longer displays any of the folders (Inbox, tasks, contacts). This also occurred today.

But here is the truly strange part. It only happens under one user logon. Under a different user logon, there are no problems with Internet explorer, dialog/alert or properties boxes or Outlook 2000. And the user can access her mailbox from another machine without problems.

The computer is running Windows 2000 Pro, SP-2 and is attached to a company network and domain. I believe that the user's file may be corrupt in some way that is causing these errors to occur only when that one person is logged on. And that user has not added additional software to the computer because only the Network and Client Admins have the authority to install programs.

So far I've run an anti-virus program, run Detect and Repair on Office 2000 Premium and run the Emergency Repair Utility from the Windows 2000 Pro disc... twice. But nothing has improved. I'm at my wits end.

Does anybody have any other suggestions?

When accessing the Printer Dialog from VB there is a bug whereby you cannot print to any other printer than the default printer. Microsoft's solution was to produce the VBPrnDlg.dll as a work-around. ie. add another dll to the project.

I have written a piece of software for nutritional analysis in schools and printing is an important part. Schools networks are very badly managed and resourced and dlls are difficult to install on local machines due to levels of protection (to prevent the little blighters wrecking the system). It is difficult to install and register dlls - so it is better if no dlls are needed.

To get around these problems I have been using procedures from "vbaccelerator" but I am unable to obtain any further help. The procedures are provided in three Class Modules, namely: cCommonDialog, gCommonDialog and cMemory. The method avoids placing a control on the main form.

I have downloaded the Printer Dialog demo from:
There are very limited instructions. The demo is provided with another dll called CMDLGD6.dll but I am uncertain what to do with this dll.

Do you use EITHER the dll OR the library of Class Modules OR both??

I found a major bug in the demo where the options at the hooked dialog box could not be selected. I seem to have rectified that problem and will be happy to share the solution if anyone... Read more

Hi everyone. This is my first post. I have an Acer desktop with Vista almost 2 years old now.

Whenever I delete, remame, cpoy/paste files, I get a dialog box showing the progress, but when the process is completed, the dialog box(es) do not terminate. So it presents an undesirable viewing blockage. I have to go to task mgr, or rkill to eliminate the dialog boxes. I've run registry and malware scans to diagnose the problem but I didn't find any answers. What would cause this problem? I'm about ready to go to the last resort and reformat my drive, but I don't want to go that far. Any ideas?

Then click on the Customize button for the Start menu, then on the Advanced tab
Scroll down to the Run command there and put a check in the box, then click on Apply to save the changes.

This is my first post in these forums and I think I have a unique problem.

None of my dialog boxes are not showing up. Meaning when I go to "save as.." nothing comes up after I click on that. The little right click menu appears but when I select what I want, nothing else comes up. It's not behind any other windows or open programs or on the edge of the screen anywhere. I believe I did a defrag and I did a sweep with AVG anti-virus but nothing came up

Anyone know how I might fix that and how it got that way in the first place?

1. I'm running Win XP with a DSL connection but keep getting a box that asks me what dial-up connection I want to connect to. I select "cancel" but it recurs--sometimes sooner, sometimes later--but it always comes back. How do I stop it?

2. After visiting a website (no, it wasn't porn) I started getting a message from Zone Alarm saying that Real Networks was trying to gain access. Since it wasn't something I was intentionally seeking I selected "Deny" and "Remember This Setting," but it has repeated a couple of times. I've also gotten a box that popped up telling me the following:

This computer must be connected to the internet install RealPlayer. Please check your internet connection and click Retry to complete the installation.

That message is then followed, coincidentally or not, by the message in number 1 above. I have no idea whether RealPlayer is something I need or not, but considering that I was not trying to install it and that it is behaving badly I would like for it to go away. How do I do that?

The dialog boxes on various programs have become oversized, beyond screen resolution. This creates a problem for a variety of rather obvious reasons.

This has been an unexpected development and I can think of no reason that it has happened as everything I've done has been as I've always done it. No weird installs or anything unusual.

I checked that the video drivers were up to date and even did an uninstall/reinstall of them, to no avail.

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even

Hi All,

the dialog boxes of every program in my win xp SP3, including win xp dialog boxes, show up blank, buttons, radio boxes, lists, etc, come up with no text. In addition, most of the entry fields/text of web pages displayed by firefox or IExplorer appear VERY small and form buttons sometimes reduced in size some others with no text.

I ran AVAST and no virus found, I ran Ad-aware and nothing either, same with Hijackthis, everything seems normal.

In addition, from time to time the task manager shows high peaks in CPU Usage mainly because Iexplorer goes above 100. Moreove, if i go control panel and try to open Display, I got a rundll error saying "C:\windows\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL"C:\windows\system32\desk.cpl",Display". I did regsvr32 shell32.dll and registration does not generate error, but still same rundll error showing.

Any clues ? :-(

Since Win7, I've noticed that all of my timed system events configured to pop up reminders or Microsoft Office Calendar events always pop up in the background.

Usually, I have sound on, so I can here the Windows notice, but not always.

Also, I have dual screens that I keep pretty busy!

Is there a way I can tell Win7 that I want these dialog boxes to pop up in the front like they did way back in the WinXP day?

A:Dialog Boxes Focusing Behind All

This is annoying me as well. It appears to be an issue with Windows 7 (Win7),
not Outlook. By default, Win7 combines the taskbar buttons. By doing so the
Reminder gets embedded into the "grouping" behind the Outlook icon. This
makes the reminder difficult to notice.

If you change the "Taskbar buttons" setting under the "Taskbar and Start
Menu Properties" to "Never combine," then the grouping separates and the
reminder pops-up in front of whatever else you have open.

However, one of the great new features of Win7 is this nice, clean taskbar
grouping. So it becomes a matter of sacrifice in order to get this to work

All of the solutions I've found either have to do with AutoCad (Which I don't have) or the dialog box simply appearing off screen (None of the solutions work)

Can you make a screenshot so that we will better understand your issue?

It's possible that what you experience has to do with folder templates. All folders in Windows 7 are assigned to one template or other. When you change properties and click change all folders then you only change properties of all folders of the same template. The template can be changed in folder options -> customize.

Hi everyone,

I've been having this problem for some time on this new computer. I think it might be some malfunctioning device driver, but I really don't know where to begin looking. Sometimes when I am using networked applications (including one I am currently writing in C#), opening a dialog box will cause a 3 or 4 second delay between when I click it and when my system finally is able to respond. After this time, it finally shows up in the task bar; during that time, my system is completely unresponsive to everything else. This can also happen, on occasion, if I click a link in a networked application and it tries to open in the default browser (which is already open and waiting). I should also clarify that it's not just dialog boxes, but can also be new windows from an application (for example, Windows Live Messenger). I'll be working away and suddenly my computer won't respond for 4 seconds. Then, after that time, a new IM window will pop up on my task bar with a new conversation someone started, and then I will get control of my OS back again.

I've actually just gotten used to it over the last year or so, but now it's actually causing problems with the application I'm building (even trying to open an "Open File" dialog box can cause the system to miss key messages sent from other connected users during this stall time). I know this isn't supposed to be this way. Do I have some sort of malicious program causing this? Is it a... Read more

A:Opening Dialog Boxes Can Cause 3 Second Delay

Most often this is caused by a lack of resources to process the action. In most cases this points to an overload in either the memory or the CPU. In the memory, this is typically because there's too much stuff in memory, so the system is taking stuff from the pagefile (which slows the system down). In the CPU, it's typically because there's just too much stuff open.

Does this behavior improve when you close down all of the running stuff? If so, then it's a matter of selectively closing down the running stuff to see what's causing the behavior.

Here's another way to see if you can locate the exact problem that's causing it:

Open Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del)
Click on the Processes tab
Click on the View menu item
Click on the Select Columns selection
Place a tick mark in the IO Reads box
Click OK to accept the changes
Resize the Task Manager window so you can see all the columns

Then do the action that causes the lag, and watch the Task Manager window to see what's causing the problems. If you double click on each column header you can get it to sort by that column so it's a bit easier to watch (do this for the CPU, memory, and IO Reads columns)

Problem began a month or more ago; seemingly out of the blue.

Printing preferences for only printer & Norton Protected recycle bin do not display all of the contents. These are fixed boxes; cannot be re-sized by me.

No other property / dialog boxes seem to be affected.

Turning off Norton protection allows all of recycle bin contents to be displayed.

I uninstalled the printer software. Upon trying to re-install the printer software, I am informed that c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt . the syste file is not suitable for running MS-Dos & microsoft windows applications. This message appears in normal mode & safe mode. I can re-install the drives, but not all of the programs. After re-installing the drivers, same problem.

Things I have tried:
1. scanned for viruses & spyware at Panda & natively with Norton AV 2005, with all updates;
2. RAM diag;
3. Hard disk drive diag;
4. check disk;
5. sfc /scannow;
6. uninstalled printer software; able to re-install drivers only [ see above ];
7. restore point;
8. safe mode.
9. different screen resolutions;
10. contacted printer tech support; they suggested screen resolution, even though I noted in my initial report to them that I had tried different resolutions.
Thanks for your attention to this problem.

When running macros that cause dialog boxes to come that require you to answer yes or no to move on, is there a way to get a piece of code in there that will automatically answer yes?

In my case, I'm running an openquery macro on a "make table" query. It will (1) tell me that I will be modifying data and if would like to continue. (2)It will then tell me that the current table will be deleted. (3)It then tells that it will paste "x" number of rows to the new table. I would like, if possible, to answer "yes" to all of these questions.

Problem: A few weeks ago this unit stopped connecting to the internet, and that was
remedied. Since then when ever it starts, 2 Dialog boxes Pop up and cannot be removed.

One is ; ''Microsoft.NET Framework,'' saying Unhandled Exception ..etc..etc.
and the Second is 'Windows Installer" saying preparing to install.

The NET Framework can be pushed down out of sight below the screen, but the
Windows Installer, just sits there in the middle of the screen.

Apart from that the sysem seems to be fine except a somewhat slow startup, and internet
logon.. I am,(in case of need) attaching a HIGHTHIS log. Any help will be appreciated i getting rid of these nuisancies.

Hi peeps,

My computer runs fast when I start up, but after a period of using different programs it begins to slow down until the stage where I go to reboot, but it takes about 5 minutes to close everything down, and needs the help of asking 'Do you want to end this app now?'

I've scanned for viruses, spyware and cleaned the registry using Kaspersky AV, Ewido, Windows Defender and TweakNow RegCleaner, but it hasn't made much of a difference.

I think that it may be having problems freeing up RAM after I have used it and so performance deteriates over time. ALthough the task manager doesn't reflect this and the virtual memory is set to system managed.

Can anyone offer any suggestions please?

Thanks in advance

I'm running an NVIDIA GeForce Ti 4600 128 MB video card, with new drivers which I downloaded from nvidia in early June - 71.89, and using a SONY GDM-FW900 monitor at 1600x1000. I'm running a P4 with Windows XP, SP2, and plenty of resources. I have 1 GB of RAM, and 500 GB of mass storage

I have a desktop display problem, which appeared after I installed the new drivers. I have 6 printers installed on my system. When I bring up printer windows to set "printing preferences", the right side and bottom of the dialog box window is chopped off, leaving me without access to important printer settings. I have played with every possible variable in the display settings, such as font size, icon size, etc., etc.. Nothing will bring things back to normal, as they were before I upgraded the video driver. I tried reinstalling the printer drivers, but to no avail. There are 3 printers which exhibit this, and 3 printers whose dialog boxes are perfectly normal

Strangely, 3 of my printers seem to have the dialog boxes OK. The others are a mess.

The problem must be with the video driver. I see that a newer driver from nividia is available - 77.72, which I downloaded. Should I try this driver, or should I uninstall the present nvidia driver, and use XP's generic driver??

I must have access to my printers' functions, and I don't know the best path to do this now. All was well before I upgraded to the 71.89 driver. I was still using the drivers installed when ... Read more

I'm having trouble with certain apps not opening dialog boxes. The two places I've noticed this so far are:

Adobe Photoshop CC - Clicking Save As - nothing happens when clicked. In this case, I can force it to close, reopen and it will then work. Luckily it auto-recovers projects that were open.

Chrome browser - clicking an Upload button on a website application to upload an image. Normally it would open a windows browser dialog but there's a quick blink and nothing happens. Closing and reopening Chrome doesn't fix it, but restarting the computer does.

I think it's a Windows issue and not an issue with Chrome and Photoshop since both started acting up around the same time. It doesn't happen right away. It will work for a while. If I restart my computer, it will work normally for a day or so and then the error will start in one program. It's happening in Chrome for me right now, but if I switch over to Firefox, it works fine for me. So maybe it is a windows issue but an interaction with certain programs.

Any ideas?

At another topic I asked for the system fonts, which according to the sfc command and the manual control of Windows/fonts folder are fine.
The issue with bad font persist, see screenshot here Pasteboard ? Uploaded Image
One application uses a font for the dialogues, which when is missing makes those sw uncontrollable. Does anyone know what font it can be, and why makes that mess?
Thanks for comprehension and any advice

I have attached some photos that hopefully illustrate the problem better than I can. It seems that on one of our Dell business machines is somehow screwed up. In Macromedia Fireworks the bottom and right toolbar are severely oversized and dramatically decrease the ever so precious work room. Also in our Lexmark scanner import window the same kind of problem occurs but it is more of a problem, because it cuts off some of the very important "Advanced Options" that allow you to set the scanning resolution. I have tried the System File Checker in Command Prompt and it still seems to be doing this. Dell Tech support won't even talk to me since the warranty is expired (which is very rude especially to a business) .

Hopefully someone here will be able to help me.

I am using Windows 8 Pro 64-bit.

In previous versions of windows, dialog boxes used to pop-up as required on top of other screens to indicate if there were problems or if action was needed (e.g. if you were copying a file from one location to another and if that file already existed there, you were asked what you wanted to do).

However when at the desktop level of Windows 8, dialog boxes remain in the background and due to grouping of the same icons together in the taskbar it is often difficult to see if a dialog box has popped up and requires action.

For example: if I am copying a file from one location to another and I have a Windows Explorer window open covering the whole desktop screen, apart from the taskbar at the bottom. If the file already exists, a dialog box opens but it is hidden behind the Explorer screen - the only indication is that another "file" icon opens in the taskbar, but hidden behind the existing explorer file icon so it is difficult to see - so that you are often unaware of the issue and are assuming that the transfer is going ahead, unaware that your intervention is needed.

Is there any way to get dialog or pop-up boxes to always appear on top, so that you are immediately aware of any issues or where action is needed?

Many thanks for your help.

Win 7 and Internet Explorer 9.

On many web sites I am missing the small "dialog boxes" that allow me to make a selection or take an action. For example, I frequently don't see the box that would allow me to note that I wish to replay to a forum post. I can sometimes randomly move the cursor around the screen and watch for it to change to the "finger". I can then click and and get the desired action. Many other boxes are visible and active.''

"Show Pictures" is checked in the Tools, Internet Options, etc. menue.
Any ideas for me?

I'm running Windows 8.1 with all the latest updates as of 8/20/14. Whenever a dialog box appears, it shows up on the second monitor. This didn't happen before Update 2 but it's a pain for my wife since she doesn't turn on the second monitor and thinks software is locked up when it's only trying to ask for input on the monitor that's off. Is there a way to limit dialog boxes to the active monitor?
I have the same version of Windows at work and it doesn't do this. It displays dialog boxes on monitor 1 which is what I want.

Been getting those random fake Windows dialog boxes urging me to get the newest spyware protection. Just started getting these popups tonight. Also, about to update to SP2 so I want to make sure I'm completely disinfected. If you could have a look at my log and see if you find anything, I'd be very happy! Thanks.

A:Couple of fake Dialog Boxes

Hello miwachiru123 and welcome to TSF,

I'm not seeing anything in this log. I would suggest holding off on installing SP2 until we verify that this system is clean or you'll likely have issues with SP2. Just download SP1 or SP1a at this point.

Download Combofix and save it to your desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

Close any open browsers.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.

Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post the ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hello I need some help.

Outlook 2003 allows you to set a Reminder date and Flag color on email messages.

After right clicking on the greyed out or colorless flag beside the message the "Flag for followup" dialog box opens. It has a line for the date of the followup titled "Due By." Next to the "Due By" box is an arrow which when clicked displays a calendar.

When I move the cursor to select a date on the calendar, the dialog box containing the calendar closes so I can not select a date. The comparable box for selecting a flag color works fine.

It did work properly in the past so I'm guessing some program changed a setting but I don't know where to look so all help will be appreciated.

Thank you

When I tried saving in Microsoft Word, no save box would appear for me to enter file-name and location. I tried on other Microsoft Office and none of them would allow me to browse files with Save/Open dialogs either. I even tried other non-Microsoft products and some of (although not all of them) had the same problem where no Save/Open dialog would appear when I requested it.

The programs I tested which did show me a Save/Open dialog were: Paint.Net, Notepad

The programs I tested which did not show me a Save/Open dialog were: Notepad++; All Microsoft Office; Visual Studio 2008; Google Chrome; iTunes.

If anyone has any idea how I could fix this, as it leaves many of the programs which it affects unusable, I would much appreciate any support.
