Parse HTML tags in Word

Q: Parse HTML tags in Word

Dear macropod,

Split from: insert html tags into word document

I've never dealt with macros before and trying to do this myself is making my brain melt haha.

However i need it ONLY for files that are opened, not located.

Also is there a way to turn it on and off if it is automated?

Could you please help?

Preferred Solution: Parse HTML tags in Word

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Parse HTML tags in Word

For that you could use:

Code:
Sub UpdateOpenDocuments()
Application.ScreenUpdating = False
Dim wdDoc As Document
For Each wdDoc In Documents
With wdDoc.Range.Find
.Text = ""
.Forward = True
.Wrap = wdFindContinue
.Format = False
.MatchCase = True

.MatchSoundsLike = False
.MatchAllWordForms = False

End With

Next
Set wdDoc = Nothing

I've got several hundred word documents that I need to do some formatting on. I need to go through them and insert html tags into the document as per below...

a short bold text line

becomes

a short < b >bold text< / b > line

Minus the spaces of course.

At the moment I really only need bold, italic, underline, and unordered lists.

Does anyone know of the easiest and most efficient way of doing this? (Or some macro code?)

I don't have much experience in Word, but currently looking at writing a macro.

A:insert html tags into word document

Hi,

You could use a macro like the following. It processes all file in the selected folder.

Code:
Sub UpdateDocuments()
Application.ScreenUpdating = False
Dim strFolder As String, strFile As String, wdDoc As Document
strFolder = GetFolder
If strFolder = "" Then Exit Sub
strFile = Dir(strFolder & "\*.doc", vbNormal)
While strFile <> ""
Set wdDoc = Documents.Open(FileName:=strFolder & "\" & strFile, AddToRecentFiles:=False, Visible:=False)
With ActiveDocument.Range.Find
.Text = ""
.Forward = True
.Wrap = wdFindContinue
.Format = False
.MatchCase = True
.MatchWholeWord = False
.MatchWildcards = False
.MatchSoundsLike = False
.MatchAllWordForms = False
.ClearFormatting
.Font.Bold = True
With .Replacement
.ClearFormatting
.Text = "<b>^&</b>"
.Font.Bold = False
End With
.Execute Replace:=wdReplaceAll
.ClearFormatting
.Font.Italic = True
With .Replacement
.ClearFormatting
.Text = "<i>^&</i>"
.Font.Italic = False
End With
.Execute Replace:=wdReplaceAll
.ClearFormatting
.Font.Underline = True
With .Replacement
.ClearFormatting
.Text = "<u>^&</u>"
.Font.Underline = False
End With

Hello.

I haven't worked with Word scripts before and don't really know if this is possible, but from what I've read it should be.

Basically, I use a plain text editor when I write on my phone on the go, where I use HTML tags to indicate formatting like this:

Normal text <i>text I want italic,</i> some more normal text

Is it possible to create a script that makes words between <i> tags italic and then remove the tags? (same for <b> for bold and <u> for underlined text) and how would I record or write one?

And also, can I use one to remove blank lines?

I use Word 2010

A:Word macro to format plain text using HTML tags

I imagine you could write a macro to that checks this and does the appropriate action.

You will however have to establich the codes you will be using.

I don't know if there will be a conflict when you open word and depending upon the layout <i> might be interpreted before the macor runs, but I think it's a aquestion of trial and error,

<i> </i>
<b> </b>
<u> </u>
<rmv> </rmv>
etc...

Try this, don't know if it will work or not but go to tools, options and on the view tab make sure there is no tic in the Field codes.

Second check the view you are in. Sounds like you are in viewing the htm source as listed under view.

Are you seeing all the htm tags or just the one for bold?

Let's say I send a mass email to all my friends. Obviously, they would all have different email accounts, providers, browsers etc etc. If I put those special html tags on them, will everysingle person be able to view it??? I"m not talking about just the <b>bold</b>, or <i>italics</i>. I mean those other things that you don't see to often, such as <s>strike</s> and
<marquee ALIGN="Top" LOOP="infinite" BEHAVIOR="slide"
<BGCOLOR="#FF0000" DIRECTION="left" HEIGHT=30 WIDTH=200>
moving marquee tags too.
</marquee>.

I use yahoomail, and there is a function in yahoo to "allow html tags." I did that, and sent an example to myself. It worked fine. What about other mails, such as Outlook, hotmail, etc etc etc. Are there any limitations this? Will everybody be able to see the effect??

Basically it has an input box for a date and a submit button, the site then sends you to the relevant page.

My question is:
How do I duplicate what the <FORM> tags do on that site in my VB program?
In other words how do I send a date (or any data) to the targeted script via VB?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

I previously used Firefox, but had some problems connecting to a couple of my favourite websites. They'd just be interminably slow to open and it became a huge annoyance.

So I recently installed Opera 10 and am just getting to grips with it, fixing some annoying defaults (like Password Manager).
I've come across a couple of niggles, and wonder if anyone here can help.

First problem occurs when posting / editing / quoting messages on internet forums. In Internet Explorer and in Firefox, I can see rendered images, smilies and text formatting as I'm writing. I can use CTRL + B to bold etc.
Using Opera, images don't appear - I just see the image's address inside [ IMG ] [ /IMG ] HTML tags. Smilies and text formatting, the same.

This means I have to Preview messages to make sure things look as I intend them to. This is awkward when there's a lot of formatting in a message.
Is there a way to make Opera show images and formatting in forum posts whilst I'm editing, not just after I've posted?
The second issue is to do with the wee icons next to my bookmarks. I have everything checked under Delete Private Data, but unfortunately this deletes the bookmark icons too.
I'm wondering if I uncheck "Clear bookmark visited time" if this would retain the icons? And what exactly is "bookmark visited time"? I don't want to retain any sort of log of when I or other users of the PC visited particular websites, especially ... Read more

Good morning all, (at least here in EST) Im not sure if this is the proper forum, so ill see if it dies here before I try to post somewhere else.
Every Month, i need to send in a report on what i have done here at work (read: justify my existence). It generally takes me about an hour to do. What i would like to do is to create a HTML form, formatted the way they want it, with text boxes/pulldown menus, and fill in my information, and have the completed form either A)saved as an html form without the boxes; IE:the information gets added into the actual html OR B) All the information gets pushed into a word.doc.
Ultimately, i would like to have it save with something like this "Report-{date or month}.html (or doc).
Soooo, this being said, any of you code wizards out there know how to do this? Thanks alot for any imput you can give.

I want to create marco in Word which will remove text between 2 tags throughout a document, for example

{begin tag}
This is the text to be removed.
{end tag}

The tagged text will appear throughout a large document and will have multiple instances where it needs to be removed.

These tags will always be the same and the text needs to be deleted between the 2 tags. This will allow me to maintain 2 different versions of a similar report in one document and generate 2 final reports with a macro.

Any ideas if this can be done and if so how?

thanks, Matt

ps Using Word 2007

A:MS Word Marco Help - Removing text between tags

If I have understood correctly you might find this approach easier
1. Type the document with all the text in it
2. Format the text you want to 'delete' as hidden (Format->Font->Effects and tick 'hidden')
This will hide the text
3. If you want to display the text go to Tools->Options->View and tick 'show hidden' text
Hope that helps

Then save as DOC.

You could open a dozen at once and save a dozen and close a dozen.
Alt+F, then A gets you the Save as box.
Tab-->Up arrow a couple times gets you the DOC file type.
Enter.
Ctrl+W is the shortcut to close a file.

I believe there is an installation option for Word...directly from the help file:

Install or remove individual components

If you originally installed Word from a network file server or from a shared folder, run that copy of the Setup program.

1 Close all programs.
2 Click the Windows Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
3 Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon .
4 If you installed Word by using the Office Setup program, click Microsoft Office on the Install/Uninstall tab, and then click Add/Remove.

If you installed Word individually, click Word on the Install/Uninstall tab, and then click Add/Remove.

5 Follow the instructions on the screen.

For the location of components in Setup, click .

Notes

If you installed Word from a CD-ROM, and you have mapped your CD-ROM drive to a new drive letter since you originally installed Word, run Setup again from the CD-ROM. If you are running any Word files from the CD-ROM, you must uninstall Word and then install Word again from the CD-ROM.
To add or remove components of Word on Windows NT Workstation 3.51, start Word Setup or Office Setup in the same way as when you first installed Word, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

I have a Word 97 file that I want to convert to HTML. The problem is that it is 48 pages of text and it ends up being a 858 kb file. It is all text (football stats) so most of the file size is attributed to the bloat that Word 2000 adds to it when it does the conversion. Does anybody know of a program that will convert doc files into HTML without all the extra overhead? Or is there a way to strip out the extra tags?

Microsoft words conversion to HTML is pretty poor. Although I've never done it I understand moving it over to frontpage and then saving it as HTML helps a lot. Personally I would recommend making a new page for the calendar, in most cases it will look cleaner and nicer then anything converted in word.

A:HELP: Converting Word Doc to HTML

the pictures are not going to be saved with the formating to html. You are going to need to post the files online to be viewable by the recipients and even then their email software might now allow them to view the images right away.

But if you want to see your images your going to have to save them in the same directory as your html document or edit the html to look for them in the right place. You would need to zip the hole thing up and send it as an attachment though.

I cannot get Word 2002 to send e-mail in HTML format. My partner and I both use word for e-mail on the same PC. His works, mine with the same formating does not. My mail is always received in plain text, and inserts are received as attachments. What can I do to correct this? Thanks for any suggestions. Irby

Well, you could begin to use Outlook/Outlook Express/Eudora and their ilk instead of a Word Processor to send email. Generally speaking, you really should use a tool designed for what you need to do: you wouldn't try racing a Dragster on a bicycle now would you?

We have a business need for simple word documents (i.e. a bit of standard formatted text, with a few simple microsoft drawing ovals containing hyperlink to various sections of the text) to be saved as HTML.

It would appear that Word 97 doesn't convert drawing objects, but does any other pictures that have been inserted. Really need to keep this simple and allow the guys creating the documents to only need to insert a micrsoft drawing oval and add text and link to a bookmark in the document, (rather than then having to cut this and paste back in as a picture).

Is there any patch / fix / update that will force Word 97 to convert the drawing objects aswell (it appears to convert fine on the one machine we have with word 2000 but loses the objects on all our Word 97 machines).

Thoughts?

Greetings,

I have Office 2003 Professional installed on my pc here at work. I want to post a Word 2003 doc with a picture and web links to Craig's List, but Craig's List only accepts text documents. So my question is this, is there a way to convert my Word 2003 doc to HTML, so I can then save it as a text document and submit it to Craig's List? If 3rd party software is required can anyone make any suggestions for me?

Note, I found a converter tool for Word 2000 on the Microsoft website which does exactly what I am looking for. The only problem is they do not have one for Word 2003.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If you are wanting to save in html, when you go to 'save as', click on 'web page filtered'. I usually use front page for html documents for it is easier for myself. When you open the newly created html file you can simply view source. This is the long road but does work.

I have a legal copy of Office 2000. I like using MS Word to create web pages. However when I select "View Source"I am taken to the "Microsoft Development Environment", a sub-program which I can't find any information about in Office Help or even on the web. In particular, I'm trying to find out how to upload a website created in Word and how to modify all the URL references in the code automatically without doing it manually with search-and-replace.

I'm trying Adobe Acrobat Professional for 30 days to see if it meets my business needs. I need to edit a pdf document. I then want to convert that document (with my edits) to an HTML (preferred) or a Word document.

Right now....when I'm in Adobe and have my edited document on screen, I click "Save As" then "Save As Type" "HTML" and have tried "Word" and I get an error message "Bad Parameter".

I appreciate any help. Also...if you know of any other editors that would do this, I'd like to hear about those too.

Thank you!

A:Solved: editing pdf and converting to HTML or Word

Don't know what your problem is. I just tried it with a bunch of PDF's I have created in the past and it worked perfectly. I will look into it though.

This program won't let you edit the PDF but it will convert a PDF to html.

I am using Outlook 2002 SP3 under Win XP Pro with a 2.8GHz P4 and 512GB RAM. I have Word set as my editor.
One of my contacts sends me fancy e-mails with embedded wallpaper and graphics for comment. When I click on either Reply or Forward, the hourglass appears and remains for 20 minutes before it is possible to even start to type a reply. (During this time, there is minimal processor activity so it does not seem to be a memory problem.)
However, if I revert to the default Outlook editor, the response is immediate. If I copy/paste the e-mail content into Word, the same thing happens so it seems that Word simply cannot handle the graphic content whereas the Outlook editor does. Unfortunately, the Outlook editor lacks certain features that I need.
Can anyone tell me if this is an insurmountable barrier in Word or is there a workaround?

A:Word slow to load html e-mail

I have now realised that this situation not only applies to e-mails
containing complex graphics but in fact to html e-mails such as those received from Yahoo Groups. Furthermore, this is a new situation because, until recently, I could reply to or forward all e-mails and I have always had Word as my Outlook editor.
I have tried Detect & Repair without any success so I am bewildered about what has happened.
It would be appreciated if anyone can offer any suggestions.
If it is any help, during the 20 minutes loading time, Task Manager shows process activity only in Outlook.exe, which occasionally rises to 20%. The PF seems to sit constantly at 610MB whereas the PF size is 750MB.

I used MS Word to create an FAQ. I then used the Frames option (Format->Frames) to create a header frame and TOC frame. I now have a 3-frame FAQ, and I will be saving it as a web page. I now wish to include a search engine field in this project, but I am not sure how. I am thinking there is some kind of html coding I could apply to have this field appear once I convert to html, but I do not know the code. Can someone help me on this? Feel free to recommend a product if that is the only solution. Thank you.

We run various Coldfusion/Flash applications and one does a Word doc upload and conversion to an html file. Never works and we're sure the code is correct. We've tried some hard coding to narrow the problem and it definitely has something to do with Word. We're running Word 2003 on a Windows Server 2003 and sometimes, not all the time, but sometimes when double clicking on the doc file through Windows Explorer, Word hangs - not responding. Doc files are associated with Word 2003 and all permissions seem ok.

Any ideas on what to look at particularly with the doc not opening when clicking on it as we think it might be related?

Thanks in advance.

Try repairing Word by opening it or any Office product and selecting Help and "Detect and Repair".

And consider resetting the default settings.

When I click on a link, key in a URL or hit refresh on any open page, Opera opens the page with Word! I was downloading something and changed the extension on a file and ever since then it hasn't managed to open anything within Opera. It always tries to open a new Word document.

Has anyone seen this and managed to solve it?

A:Opera Opens Html Page With Word

Hi Pete
In Opera, click tools > preferences > advanced tab. Click "downloads" from the menu on the left. Uncheck "Hide File Types Opened With Opera" in the top right corner.
Select "application/internet shortcut" then click the "edit" button. Make sure "Open with Opera" is the only one selected. You might want to look at the msword association as well.
Anyway, that's were all of Opera's file associations are located and can be changed.
Also take a look in windows explorer at tools > options > file type tab and check the associations in there if the above doesn't happen to work for some reason.

This is very frustrating...is there some way I can view and edit html code in Word 97?? Thanks for your help!

Generally, if something is missing in Office, it was not chosen during installation. Run the installer again and choose a custom installation to add and remove any components you choose.

We are using Window 2000 operating system and Microsoft Office 2000 pro.

When I open an HTM file in word and click on HTML source so I can edit the HTML, I get an error that says it isn't installed and if I want to install it. I say yes and put in the CD. The system tells me that the file doesn't exist on the CD, but I can browse the CD and see it. Help

Not sure I am in the right forum, but here goes. I have a 24 page word document that was saved as a word document. I need to post this on a web site, but the format changes and I don't want retype the whole thing. I am told I need to save it in html format, but it does not work. Can anyone help. Thanks.

A:Copy word document to HTML format

Hi,

What version of MS Word

DO you have all the options installed. Save as HTM may be a selectable option during the installation of MS Word.

What happens when you use the "save as HTM" option Any messages on screen, any prompt for a location to save the file.

What error message(s) do you get.

I've just tried this with a Word XP document. The "save as htm" option allowed me to save a copy of the document as filename.html in the same folder by default. The file opened in IE and Opera quite normally.

New to this forum, so just gonna say hi first. Hi lads... and lassies!

Now over to the serious stuff.

Background:
I had Windows XP Pro SP2 installed, and then i did the huuuge mistake to install Vista Ultimate. Got annoyed and reinstalled XP Pro SP3.
I backed up my files before goin back to XP on an external HD..
And when I copied back the files to the pc I saw, to my horror, that everything looked ok. But when I try to open text documents, it's just garbled text. Looks like this:

Every single document looks like that, rtf files, txt files, word documents and so on. And I've tried to open them and converting to different codings in word and so on (UTF, ANSII and what not). Nothing works.
And then I saw, when I was gonna import my bookmarks in Firefox that I saved before I went back to XP from Vista, that those html files also are full of garbled text..

I looked around on google, and can't find anything about it.. I would greatly appreciate some help. Every single text document, which is quite a few, is messed up... And some of them, I... Read more

We can open an html document in Microsoft word by either specifying Response.ContentType = "Application/msword" or by clicking "Edit in Microsoft word" on the File menu.

However, it always opens with margins set at 1.25in, and I need them to be .5in.

I have tried setting styles in my (asp.net generated) html page, I have modified my normal.dot document template, but nothing seems to affect the margins (as displayed in the "Page Setup" dialog).

I have googled this question for hours (days, really).

Do you have any idea what I could try?

Thanks in advance.

Hi

I have a user at work with the following problem:

Basically, his Outlook 2000 email is set to HTML. When he receives an email he opens it fine. He then clicks edit>edit message. The message then opens in Word 2000. I have checked under Tools>options>mail format and made sure use microsoft word to edit email messages is unchecked.

I checked and unchecked to try and force it but no luck.

It works fine on my pc.

Any ideas? Sounds like a registry setting to me!

We are using windows 2000.

Thanks
