Keyboard keys T, Y, backspace, shift and tab not working on Yoga 900

Q: Keyboard keys T, Y, backspace, shift and tab not working on Yoga 900

Good afternoon. We have a Yoga 900 and have problems with the keyboard keys T, Y, backspace, shift and tab not working. We have tried updating the keyboard driver, Windows Update, using the onscreen keyboard, and rebooting the computer - all with the same results. Does anyone have any solutions on fixing this, please? Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

So, T, Y Backspace and Tab don't work on the onscreen keyboard, either?

I've had my TPY for a little over a year without any issues, but today I lost the ability to use the following keys: Backspace, Windows, Left-Shift, T, Y, Tab, Capslock, [, ]  in addition to some of the function keys. Using the onscreen keybaord or an external usb keyboard works just fine. I am unable to use the tab key at the BIOS screen, so it appears to be a hardware issue. This seems to be a common problem for these keys in particular for various Lenovo models and even some Dells. I have tried reinstalling the keyboard drivers as suggested in other posts, and I have tried reseating the keyboard connection according to this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxHKvpI8Wvc I bought this unit from the MS store with only a 1 year warranty (which is now up), so I'm not sure what to do. I can try replacing the keyboard but it appears others have had only limited success with replacement. Has anyone else dealt with this problem?

Update for anyone else who runs into the same problem: I ordered a replacement keyboard off of eBay and used the online hardware replacement manuals to take apart my TPY and switch out the keyboard. Everything is working like normal again!

On my Thinkpad Yoga S1, the keys t, y, backspace, enter, caplock, and left shift are suddenly not working. This seems to be a common problem on lenovo computers, but the lenovo forum administrator closed the only thread that attempted to address this without any solution. The lenovo admin said that too many diferent models were involved. I don't understand why these exact specific keys are affected on so many Lenovo models. Lenovo has no solution, and will not support a thread to work towards one. The Microsoft store already replaced my keyboard under warrenty over a year ago, but the YTP S1 is now out of warrenty. This does not seem to be a hardware problem given the relatively recent Keyboard replacement. Does anyone have any suggestions? I wont buy another Lenovo if this problem cant be solved. I've had tremndous problems with this computer and have found Lenovo to be unhelpful/unresponsive. This was an expensive computer when it was purchased.

As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

Hello, I am hoping someone could help me with this issue. I am not sure if I am posting in the right section of the forum so forgive me if i am not. I am using a compaq laptop with windows 7 for an OS. The G, H, 8, and backspace keys decided to stop working. For some reason the only way to get any of those buttons to work is if you put on CAPS lock and hold shift. Then you can use those keys. Im not sure if any other keys have been affected as of yet. Ive tried to google for a solution, which normally helps me fix any computer issues I come accross. So far I can only find the reccomendation to hold the function button and press numlock, and its supposed to remove the, "sticky keys." I am not quite sure what exactly the sticky keys are but I didnt think it was the problem here, and the laptop doesnt seem to have a function button anyways. I have seen the option to turn on sticky keys when holding shift on other computers or tapping shift 8 times, I dont know if it was turned on or if sticky keys cause certain keys to not work unless you hold shift while CAPS lock is on, but if this sounds like something you can help with please advise me of any suggestions. I appreciate any time you take to help or even if youve read this far. Thank you

A:Certain keyboard keys not working unless you press caps lock and hold shift?

First thing you do is get a canned air and clean out the keyboard... slowly, carefully, then do it again with the laptop upside down. That rules out the most common cause... dirt, dust, and debris.

Hi all, I bought a Lenovo S1 Yoga. The shift key only works with certain keys but not other, important ones like T. It is extremely inconvenient and makes this laptop unsuitable for work. Characters like the semi-colon are completely unavailable on this laptop now. I have already read through quite a few forum posts to find the solution. I have tried using the device manager to uninstall the keyboard, have used Lenovo vantage to find the latest drivers and install them and have also tried turning all keyboard ease of access ommands off. Nothing seems to fix this issue. It seems to be a software issue, rather than Hardware as the shift key works with about half of the keyboard. It does not fix itself when working on the command prompt. Please could someone provide an adequate solution to this problem. Thanks,SZ

For last few days, the certain keys like T,Y, Shift, Backspace etc..started mulfunctioning. It will work sometimes but it won't work sometimes. This issue persists for few days, but on a day, when i was typing important documentation , my backspace key started mulfunctioning again and tried multiple times by pressing it as it is urgent work to be completed on time. The same key got popped out after multiple tries. My laptop is under warranty until 2019. So i took my laptop for service in an authorized service centre. They said the keypad keys malfunctioing due to the some issue in chip but the same can't replaced under warranty as one of my key was popped out. They said that even if we fix the backspace key which is popped out , other keys wont work as the issue is with keypad chip. My question is why i need to pay for the keypad change as the keypad issue is not only with the popped out key. Actually the key is popped out after the keypad was already got defect. Please help me how to claim a warranty for this case

Hello Community,  I have a problem for my lenovo Yoga 720 keyboard. Some keys "1","q","a", z" (as far as I know of) just stopped working suddenly. I am using Windows 10-64 bit. It has been up-to-date I then used 'Lenovo System Update' to update my BIOS to the most recent version, and anything else that I was suggested to update. The keyboard keys still didn't work. It actually worked a tiny while, like it seldomly tryped out some of the letter it didn't work, then all failed keys stopped working again. Then I tried to reset windows, and re-install windows 10. However, it didn't work at all. The on-screen keyboard works fine. Under the 'Commandrompt", failed keys didn't work either. I am not sure if it is the hardware of software problem in this case. Anyone has the same problem? Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

About 4 months ago, I had an issue with the keyboard where about 9 keys on the keyboard sometimes would not type. I sent the laptop in for repair, the keyboard was replaced, and I did not have any issues since then. That is, until recently. For about 2 days now, I have been having the same problem again, except with different keys this time. One point of consistency is that both times I have had this issue, the broken keys were all on the right side of the keyboard. I have already tried updating drivers and draining power then rebooting. The specific keys not working are 8, =, i, ], and k (both shifted and not).  I recently updated my BIOS and chipset, could this have anything to do with it? Is there another possible solution, or do I have to send it in again? Thanks in advance.

Hi, An external usb keyboard should work fine. Regarding your notebooks keyboard, it may be worth trying the following. Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Regards, DP-K

My X1 Yoga keyboard stopped responding suddenly. Was working fine, walked away for 15 minutes, came back to wake from sleep and no key response. Track button and click buttons on keyboard work fine. Caps lock and F1 indicator lights don't work either. The touchpad is fine. None of the keys work at all. Didn't install any new software or updates. Bought replacement keyboard from laptopkeyboard.com and replaced but still same exact issue so don't believe it is a faulty membrane (as suspected).  Pulling hair out trying to understand.  Only thought is maybe either the system board or the ribbon cable from the keyboard to the board went bad.  There are two ribbon cables from the keyboard to the system board.  My guess is one is for the track buttons and the other for the keys.  Before replacing these, hoping someone has some other idea (maybe like a simple software glitch?).  Thanks.

Hello,

My G, H, apostrophe and backspace keys suddenly stopped working on my keyboard. I do not think this is a physical issue, because it happened suddenly with just these keys, and I have seen upon Google searching that others have had a problem with the exact same combination of keys suddenly not working. Is there a way to fix this without having to reinstall system and lose my Microsoft Office and other installed programs? (I have an HP notebook with Windows 10, by the way).

I have tried ejecting battery and unplugging cable and holding down Start button, but it didn't work. The onscreen keyboard works, but it's a pain to have to use. I know I could buy an external keyboard, but I'd prefer to fix this problem if I can.

Thanks in advance.

Since upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, the shift keys (both of them) on my pavilion have developed a problem. After a non-specific amount of time, but never any longer than a few minutes after boot (and sometimes straight away) the shift keys do not work. If I revert to Windows 8.1 they function perfectly, but if I then upgrade to Windows 10 again, the problem returns. I have tried rolling back (and updating) the synaptics touchpad driver as I found some posts that suggested this might be relevant. This does nothing.  I have connected an external keyboard. This works fine under Windows 10. I have removed the keyboard in device manager and had it picked up again on a reboot. None of the things I have tried have made a difference. Any further suggestions? Thanks.

Hi i am hoping someone can help with my problem.  I have a G505 laptop for over a year now.  About two months ago some keys on the right hand side of the keyboard stopped working.  Mainly the shift key, enter key, return key.  Other keys around these working fine.  I cannot use Word or type emails now and rely on the onscreen keyboard to compete return or enter functions which is painful.  Also, sometimes when I boot the laptop up, the screen is very dark.  The only way to rectify this is to reboot (sometimes several times) or for some reason if I plug in a HDMI cable to link laptop to TV, the brightness returns straight away. I would be very grateful for any guidance on these issues. Many thanks in advance and kind regards,JB

Hello everyone. Today my shift and ctrl keys stopped working correctly... it happened while I was playing and later when I tried to change the language using Alt + Shift. I checked if Sticky Keys and other similar options weren't turned on by accident, but they weren't.

And after some time spent in trying to fix the problem I opened the On-Screen Keyboard and noticed that when I use my Ctrl key, Shift is pressed automatically as well (it's just what On-Screen Keyboard says). The same thing happens when I press Shift, then the Ctrl key "presses itself". It so happens that all four (left and right shift, and left and right ctrl) keys are pressed at the same time, when I press just one of them.

Does everyone know where the problem could be from and how I can fix it... it's really annoying, I can't use any of the combinations like Ctrl + V, Ctrl + C, Ctrl + A, etc. The problem started while I was playing Assassin's Creed; I sometimes hear sounds like too-much-buttons-pressed while I play it, but I've never had this problem until today. I have no idea what it could be, I tried everything I know.

If it helps, the problem is still there while I chat or surf the web through Asus Express Gate, when the windows isn't running at all.

PS: Sorry if I used strange phrases or words, I am not a native English speaker.

Hi. I am using a Lenovo G70 and for the past few days my shift keys stopped working. It's a huge problem as I have a manuscript to turn in very soon and I can't really write without using the shift keys.as for now I've tried the following;-reset my laptop to the factory settings, that included erasing all my files with the exception of a small partition where I kept my manuscript and only that-update the keyboard driver/uninstall it and then restarting the laptop-checked my region and language settings, it's all set to the US, although I do not live in the US...wondering if that might be the problem, but it's almost impossible.-remapped my shift keys using keymapper or smartkey, something like that. The weird thing is that those changes persisted even though I reseted my laptop, but even so, I solved nothingI want to add that I can't get a 3rd party keyboard these days, but the fact that even remapped, those keys didn't work could mean that the problem is software-based. My laptop didn't suffer any thrusts or stuff like that, it's not even warming up.Also, an interesting thing to note is that sometimes, the shift keys begin to work, but only for a short period of time, before failing again. I really have no idea what makes them work. I cleaned both shift keys on my keyboard, although aside from some dust, they were clean to begin with. What can I do/ I am really on the edge with the time limit...

I cleaned both shift keys on my keyboard, although aside from some dust, they were clean to begin with. What can I do/ I am really on the edge with the time limit... P.S; borrowing/buying a keyboard, even a cheap one, is not an option right n... Hello, I was hoping someone out there could tell me if they've had both of their **bleep** keys stop working at the same time. Mine stopped working this morning and haven't worked since. I have a Lenovo Z70-80 and its not even a year old, caps lock is the only thing working for capitals right now.
