I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently got a USB headset setup. It wouldn't seem to work with my internal mic. I disabled the internal mic under the recording tab in sound in the control panel. Once I did that, the headset started working. However the internal mic is no longer listed in the recording tab. Does any one know how to get it listed back in the recording area of sound, so I don't have to use the headset all the time?

Hi,

I was doing some updates the other night and went into msconfig,
I think i clicked hide all microsoft services and then disabled everything or most of not sure.
But usually when i go to Control Panel\Hardware and Sound i can see a tab to realtek hd audio
When i click that i get another control panel/window where i have some options to change sound
Like i had a few options where i could select to use effects like Hall, Disco, party etc

Also installed realtek AC 97, not sure if that was needed, i cant see the realtek folders in program files though.
It has another option to fix loudness which is handy to give volume a small boost.

Could anyone tell me how to get realtek back in Control Panel\Hardware and Sound

Thanks in advance

Brand new Windows 7 Home Premium (6 bit) computer. When I click on the Sound control panel item, sometimes it takes 1-2 minutes to open. But that's kind of minor (although I'd like to know how to fix it), because sometimes the HDMI sound to my HDTV works fine, and sometimes it doesn't work at all. The only sure fix is to reboot the computer, which isn't really what I want to do every time I want sound coming from the HDTV speakers.

More details: if I reboot the computer, and then switch from the monitor to the HDTV for my video output, I can open the Sound control panel (opens at normal speed) and then I select the HDTV to be the default sound device; and everything is good. At some point, I stop watching the HDMI output to the HDTV, switch the video to my main monitor, and the sound now comes out of the computer speakers. Great. That's what I want. I can even turn off the HDTV, come back 20 minutes later, switch the video back to the HDTV and the sound goes through the HDTV speakers. Switch back and forth a couple of times and everything works as expected. Great. That's what I want.

But at some later point in time, it stops working, and I don't know what triggers this. At this later point in time, I switch the video from the monitor to the HDTV, but now the sound remains with the computer speakers, if I try to open the sound control panel, it takes 1-2 minutes, and when it finally opens the sound control panel no longer lets me select the HDTV to be the default soun... A:Sound Control panel takes 2 minutes to open; HDMI sound inconsistent

I had the slow opening sound panel/playback section for a while. I tried several things and all of a sudden the problem went away. Not sure what fixed it but I have updated the AMD video card drivers several times, no audio driver updates. The only common point is that I too have an AMD video card (HD7770).

In most cases, if the PC "speakers" (sound card) is set as the default audio playback device and then an HDMI cable is plugged into the PC it will automatically switch to the HDMI sound (and make it the default playback device), and if the cable is disconnected it automatically switches back to the speakers. If you are having problems accessing the sound panel, this is another option (for most) until you get the slow opening panel issue resolved.

In my Windows 7 x64 on the Sound options in the Control Panel it is shaded grey all the time. So, when I'm trying to set the default sound to Bluetooth it is not possible to Apply any changes. To this end, the sound has be switched over manually every time I boot up the laptop.

Hello. I installed a new Creative Sound Blaster Zx sound card and installed the drivers from the CD and have found that the controls/features from the Z-Series control panel are not activating. The video within the control panel itself runs but there is no sound. Windows shows there is sound playing from it though but nothing can be heard. Do I need to turn something else on or adjust more audio settings somewhere?

As another note, before I was able to install the drivers from the cd itself, Windows had automatically installed something after recognizing the new hardware, then I ran the driver CD. I also had a previous external sound blaster audio card/driver that I was using before.

Thank you for the help. Have a great day!

A:Sound Control Panel

Sounds like the internal sound card is not installed. However, Windows will only allow one default playback device so even if it was installed and enabled you couldn't use it for a playback device.

But, recording is different. You need the internal sound card installed and "Stereo Mix" set as the default Recording device. Then whatever is connected, such as a mic, or line in, will be heard and can be used.

(I do a lot of audio as I have a recording studio).

There is no volume slider for the microphone in the volume properties - and yes, I have looked to see if there was a checkbox in the properties I was missing. There's one for recording, but that's un-muted and at full volume.

In many cases where something has worked and all of a sudden does not work, using the System Restore function and restoring the PC back to a date when it did work will fix these types of problems. System Restore MAY take care of this problem, too. System Restore can be accessed from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools.

I just got new 5.1 surround sound speakers and i have a couple of problems configuring them properly.

1. with higher frequency there's a static noise, which i believe has to do with treble, in the control panel the sound configuration doesnt offer any option to change this, any tool which i could use?

2.i changed the speaker volume according to where they are, so for example my right speaker for being much closer is quieter.
but now this configuration is assigned to all my jackets, so if i plug in my headphones in the front jacket i have the same alteration.

in the jack information it specifies ALL jacks for that device.
and in the device list there used to be a headphone device too, not just speakers and the 2 other realtek stuff.

is there anyway to change the jacks for the specific devices?

maybe an overall different software which works better and has more options.
thanks for any help.

A:Sound control panel configuration

The high pitched sound usually occurs when you have your out set greater than about 75% of the computer's max and are using high end speakers.
The audio devices in computers just aren't made to push super high volumes and they get over strained when you push the volume way up.

I'm guessing the speakers are already amplified.
I guess that leads to my biggest burning question.

I see you have optical out as an option.
why are you not using that? I mean it's 1 cable for all the channels.

Hi badcaps and welcome to Windows Seven Forums!

With the information you have provided, it would seem there is a conflict with the default Windows audio driver and the Auzen audio drivers. I would suggest you remove all audio drivers, reboot, remove any audio driver remnants (check again), and when clean re-install the Auzen drivers and reboot.

Please post back with any additional info you might be able to supply?

I have only just noticed this issue when trying to open Sibelius 6 (music notation software) or Sonar X1. They both hang on starting and I have also noticed that in Control Panel, the Sound tab itself is unresponsive and won't open the next menu level. The same with 'manage audio devices' in the sub menu underneath it. I have a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB interface, which plays back audio fine. I have tried reinstalling the drivers for the Saffire to no avail, but this seems more like a Windows problem. Has anyone got any clues, as my work relies on me creating music and I just can't see another solution except reinstalling Windows, which would be a pain given the amount of stuff I have installed already

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

A:Sound options in Control Panel unresponsive

I have Sonar X1c and a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 (firewire) and an MAudio Fastrack Ultra 8R (USB).
I only use the Saffire Pro 40 or Fastrack Ultra 8R for recording. I have a separate PCI sound card that I use for "regular" PC audio.

I did have some problems with other ASIO devices in Sonar. I used to have a SoundBlaster sound card and that had ASIO drivers. When Sonar started it would look for the SoundBlaster and set that as the default device in Sonar. I finally dumped the SoundBlaster card for an HT Omega Striker 7.1 sound card for PC sound. The Striker 7.1 does not have any ASIO drivers. That fixed the Sonar problem.

First thought with the Focusrite unit is to make sure you have the latest Windows 7 drivers and also that it is showing up in the Windows Device Manager as "working properly", to start. USB devices, if the "Safely Remove Hardware" is not used to stop the device before disconnecting or powering off can cause the device status to be corrupted. When this happens you can connect the unit but instead of it showing as an audio device, it will show up as an "Unknown Device" in the Device Manager USB section. When this occurs, you have to uninstall the device in the Device manager, then physically disconnect the unit from the PC, restart the PC and after Windows starts, connect it and Windows should detect new hardware and reinstall it. This usually fixes this type of problem.

Not knowing what your repair was and what was done to it during repair, the first question, do you have the correct HP supplied sound driver? If it was reinstalled and the correct sound driver was not installed that COULD be the problem.

Have you tried the Mic jack in the back?

What happens if you uninstall that driver and let Windows install a default driver... or is there a default driver for that audio system?

It looks like you're installing a legacy driver for a built-in HD audio chip. Is that the driver Intel recommends for Windows-7? Is there a Win Vista driver available?

i finally got onto this mac to find my actual ip (192.168.1.1-subnet 255.255.255.0) and put that in mine - no go

I have an HP ProBook 4730s, which comes with "SRS premium sound" sound card. It has it's own "SRS audio settings" control panel, which actually sells you rocks as candy (i.e. fancy interface with really strange and useless options for a sound card).

I just discovered that my headphones have NO BASS, approx. everything under 150Hz is at 50% it's original volume.. A quick search on the 'net says to "disable system effects" (Playback devices > Speakers device > properties > effects tab > check "disable system effects"). It solves the problem!
Please notice that the tab is named "Effects" and NOT "Enhancements". Other playback devices have "Enhancements" tab instead.

But I want to FIND where these system effects are and disable only the ones which kill my bass. The "effects" panel shows no effects.

So I'm guessing that the "SRS premium sound" software is destroying my sound. And believe me, the sound is REALLY bad. Or are there any other effects, somwehere else and I'm missing it?

Is it safe to uninstall the SRS control panel?

Thanks guys!

A:SRS control panel on HP laptop altering sound

The SRS isn't actually your "sound card", its just a software add on to the "sound card". And the "sound card" is actually a hardware chip on the motherboard.

There are sound "enhancements" (effects) such as reverb, echo, chorous, etc available but they should not be affecting frequency response. Are you sure its the PC and not the headset? Have you tried the headset on a different PC or tried a different headset?

If you've installed some other sound driver that can be an issue as the PC vendor (HP in this case) sound driver is the best one. Non vendor sound drivers can either not work or not work correctly.

My problem is that when I try to record anything in Audacity, or even just with the windows recorder under ?Accessories? in the Start Menu (so the problem is not specific to Audacity at all), I get a lot of static in the foreground, with my voice in the background behind the static.

I?ll tell you what I?ve done to try to fix it, and maybe one of you good folks can tell me where I?m going wrong?

In the Windows Control Panel I went to Sound --> Recording tab --> I chose my Default Device: ?Front Mic?, it is enabled and it has the little meter beside it that monitors input levels. All is fine there. So I go to record:

I open Audacity or Windows Recorder (Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> Windows Recorder) and click on record. The file I end up with is invariably a track of LOUD, screeching static, with a tiny voice in the background. (The voice is m... Read more

A:Setting Up Win7 Sound in Control Panel – Please Help!

Sorry, I should add that I have tried this with two microphones (a Shure SM-58 and I'm using it with an adaptor that allows it to be plugged right into the mic input of a PC and also with a regular pc mic), both of which I know work perfectly, but changing the type of mic makes no difference in the outcome.

How to get this to play using the minijacks surround sound in wmp and wmc?

VLC does play all the 5.1 channels, center with voices ok..
wmp and wmc only play stereo.

I went thru speaker setup for both wmp and wmc.

A:Envy 24 5.1 sound works in vlc, the control panel but not in wmp wmc

I finally solved this problem with help from the thegreenbutton.tv web site.

WMC was trying to bitstream the sound out of this card, even though in sound settings panel it was set to speaker, NOT spdif.

The fix is to

Quote:
To test this theory, go to Tasks > Settings > TV > Audio. Check the box to enable Auto volume, then select Save. See if live TV results in audio output after enabling Auto volume.

And then it plays in WMC speaker test.

I'm posting a new thread because I've also lost my sound and get the rundll32.exe error and see no answers in other threads.
This is a seven year old Dell 8300 running Windows XP with a Pentium 4 processor and what the invoice refers to as "Integrated Audio". We played an old version of You Don't Know Jack a year or so ago and lost the sound almost immediately thereafter (coincidence?). I subsequently installed a new sound card from an abandoned computer and had sound for about five minutes. When I restart the computer my speakers make a brief 'blurp' on opening Windows. I've tried every troubleshooting possibility imagineable thus far but to no avail.
It occurred to me to uninstall the old driver but when I attempt to access the "install/uninstall" option from the control panel I receive an error message: "Windows cannot find C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe". This error message also pops up when I attempt to access most any option in the control panel. Could these problems be related and is there a common fix..? It would be nice to work again with my iPod, etc. Thank you for any help..!

If I rename audio devices by the method indicated below, will there be any negative repercussions? I would assume that programs don't use those names to identify devices, but I want to double check.

A:Renaming Devices in Windows Sound Control Panel

I've never tried it (or needed to). Give it a try and if doesn't work you can always change it back.

One of many problems recently has been that every time I visit the sound settings under Recording--don't even change anything--I get a BSOD. I disabled the internal mike on my HP DV7 since I use external mikes. I have no idea why this is happening, but my system protection has also been disabled, although nothing screwy shows up in virus and malware scans. So i can't even do a system restore to undo anything. I have a minidump file and xml file related to this, but it's not listed as a valid attachment here. I did notice one of the messages on the screen itself said STdriver64.sys and Driver IRQ not less or equal, but have no idea what this could mean. Any ideas?

A:BSOD when just CHECKING sound settings in Control Panel

Reinstall the HP provided sound driver and see if that helps.

Hi guys, my friend is having trouble with his headset. He has the jacks plugged in on the rear ports and they come up in the control panel but they dont seem to be transmitting his voice at all while the he can hear sounds. We have checked the control panel sound menu and the realtek drivers, and im at a loss of what the issue could be. We have also tried the front ports and while they also come up in the menus they refuse to transmit

Any available help would be appreciated

A:Jacks picked up by computer but still no sound, checked control panel

Has the headset's mic been checked with a different PC? First thing is to verify the headset/mic is good.

hi ,
i was trying to fix one of my friends old computer. On that all of a sudden sound stopped working. sound files seems to be playing ,but no output comes through speakers or headphones.
I have done all the basic tests, and evrythng is fine. When i checked in control panel ->sound and audio->voeme tab , device volume ans speaker settings i can't use, it appears like disabled.
Pls note the audio drivers(realtek alc650) are properly installed. I have spent more than a day downloading and reinstalling the drivers and googling to find out the issue. But still in vain. Now i want to try reinstalling XP, but my disks r missing , so i need to give a try in this forum. Pls help.

Look in device manager if the sound device is enabled. If you don't see it, you might need to enable it in bios.
