No files names in thumbnail folder view

Q: No files names in thumbnail folder view

There is probably a really simple answer to this problem, but I've looked in my Windows xp bible and searched MS site (yeah like that's gonna help.

I'm running Windows XP (this monster is new to me). I have my clip art files organized into different folders. While I was organizing them one day the names under the files disappeared. Just poof and they were gone. I've checked on viewing the folders and customizing them to get the names back but nothing I do works. What am I missing here?

Preferred Solution: No files names in thumbnail folder view

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all,

I at first didn't know how to give thumbnail views to folders as I had tried every step(checking & unchecking stuff in Folder Options) but recently my friend told me to rename the image to "Folder" in order to get thumbnail view.

Now, what I want to know is if there is any way to not get a bended view of the pic. As the bended view doesn't give the full pic view.

Thanks in advance for your help

I'm running Windows XP Professional edition with Service Pack 2 installed. When I open My Pictures, which I have set ot thumbnail view, it will display the thumbnail but no name for the file. Any folders set to "thumbnail" view have started doing this since two days ago. No other view setting does this, and I have My Pictures on Thumbnails because I have several hundred files there that I have amassed. I have the folders set to display the file name- when I try to click it to set it not to, it doesn't do anything and I get a ping noise from the computer.

A:Solved: "Thumbnail" view not displaying file names

Naeo, If you have the view set to show Thumbnails do the following:
Open the folder to view the thumbnails. Hold the Shift key down and click on the View button and select Details.
Remove your finger from the Shift key. You should now see the file names.
Hold the Shift key down and click on the View button and select Thumbnails.
You should now see the thumbnails with the file names under them.

I've been using Vista for two years and have never been able to find a solution to this annoyance, so I finally decided to give in and ask for help.

Here's what I want to do:
I want to view thumbnails for JPEGs in SELECTED FOLDERS. For example, folders where I store my photos. I don't use the Vista PC for much editing, but I do use it for storage, and it's a constant pain to search through older folders when you can't view thumbnails.
What I *don't* want to do:

I do not want to view thumbnails for AVI, PDF, PSD, MPEG, .XXX, you get the point.

I do not want to view above thumbnails on the desktop, as it looks like crap.

I do not want to view thumbnails in all the folders, ONLY in the folders which I select.

Everything I have read since 2007 seems to point that you either have to be absolute or forego the ability at all.

Folder options doesn't seem to do anything about individual folders, it's all or nothing.

In XP, for example, all you have to do is sort through folder views and it will let you pick thumbnails. It actually saves them too...

Vista on the other hand... well, if it did that, I wouldn't be asking for help, would I?

Has anyone found an acceptable way to take care of this? And by that I don't mean having to pay for that alternative explorer program...

Anyone else have this problem with long file names?
When using the folder view of list, it cuts off the file name past a certain point. I've looked around and can't find a setting that allows me to modify this setting.

In Vista and previous versions of Windows after switching to list view you could just hit refresh and the cut off file names would appear and the invisible list columns would maximize accordingly.

Just wanted to see if there was any way to resolve this before submitting it to MS.

Just two days ago I purchased a new Pavilion HP with an 8 G memory and 750 HardDrive.
My old HP with XP just bit the dust and rather than spend $200 fixing it,(only a 512 M with a 160 HD) I decided to buy something new.

I was seriously considering wiping any new PC clean of Vista and installing XP which I am comfortable with.
However, the timely demise of my old HP happened just as W7 was coming out, so I have kept 7 as my OS.
So far I am pleased with most of the changes but I am having a couple of small but important problems.

Everything I do is in PhotoShop.
I design and print Custom Decals for Custom DieCast Cars,i.e., HotWheels, MatchBox, etc..

Here's my situation,
When I open up a folder from Documents, mostly of which all are image files, there is no Thumbnail option in the Windows 7 View drop down menu.
Available options include Extra Large, Large, Medium, and Small Icons, Details, and List, but no Thumbnail option.
Any image that is a jpeg displays as a Thumbnail but psd files just show up as the Icon.
If I want to "see" all the different files in a folder I can't.
Setting the View menu to Large Icons did allow the jpegs to display as thumbnails.

I have to open up the folder in PhotoShop to get the Icons to display as Thumbnails.

If I right click onto a file that is opened up in Documents, and go to "Open With" there is no option to open it with PS.

Could Windows 7 not be allowing the usual interfacing of files I am used to.

A:Thumbnail View of PhotoShop 6 files in Windows7

To "Open With" ..
You have to browse to find it the first time ... for it to be in the Open With list.
There's a program to show psd Thumbnails in 7 .. but I found it was Very slow and I didn't like it.

The freeware Irfanview has a nice thumbnail browser that shows psd files ..
and Irfanview can be set up to send a file directly to Photoshop .. as its external editor.
I Have Irfanview installed to be my Default Viewer and basic Image editor.

There's also a way to edit the registry for Irfanview that will open a file in Photoshop ..
Without having to take the "Open With" > "Multiple Choice" test.
Or you can try the registry edits Here

If I get a new computer .. I'll put XP in it ...
Since Vista or W7 doesn't know there's difference between an Icon and a Thumbnail.

When I turned my computer on today it seems that all of my filenames have 'disappeared' - the files are still called the same that I named them, but instead of them showing the titles, they either show the date modified or only certain details. I mainly have music on my hard drive, and now the folder looks like this:

As you can see, on the left in the folder tree, the path is showing up, the files are still there etc, but instead of the track titles, there is now only the artist and album? I have tried shift and view, tried different views, tried changing the folder view to pictures and videos etc, I have also completely scanned the drives and there doesn't seem to be any problems? Under 'folder options' I have tried showing all extensions etc, showing hidden files, different customizing of views:

Seems strange, but 'title' isn't an option for the folder view anymore? As here:

The folders now look like this:

Furthermore, the desktop now looks like this:

All the icons work, nothing has moved, but now they are all called the dates modified rather than the names, however, if i go to rename any of them i can, it shows the original name briefly, then reverts back to the dates modified names instead???

What has happened? Can anybody shed any light as to how I can fix this?

I have a folder with about 20 images and 20 folders (with avi's, images, and txt files inside).

When I initially check the disk size (while the folder is being viewed in Icons View), the disk size reads 28,415,404,695 bytes.

When I change it to Thumbnail View, the disk size increases to 28,415,444,631 bytes.

I know it's only a 39,936 byte difference but I'm just wondering where this is coming from? When I change it back to Icons View, it still reads 28,415,444,631 bytes. How do you get it back to the original 28,415,404,695 bytes?

A:Convert long files names into short files names

It is generally not a good idea to truncate long filenames to 8x3 unless you have no other alternative. Perhaps you know that already, I apologize if I assume too much.

If you are certain that it is required to be in 8.3 format by the server, you can use a 16 bit copying program rather than the default Windows copy command. The Windows command detects the 32 bit environment and automatically uses a 32 bit copy procedure that preserves long filenames.

I would recommend using xxcopy16, which is a free utility. It comes as a component of a two part package, the other component being xxcopy. xxcopy is 32 bit, xxcopy16 is 16 bit. You get what you ask for when running those commands and the windows environment will not dictate selection.

The command line with xxcopy16 would be:

xxcopy16 <source> <destination> /yy /WV0

(That's a zero at the end and the command is case sensitive.)

A:Unable to View Hidden files and Folder

hello & welcome to TSF ,

do this first

do you have a Windows Xp cd, not the restore cd's that come with some systems, the cd will have the Windows logo & 3D hollowgram/image on it

if you do not maybe you can barrow one from a friend/family member/co-worker as long as it is the same version that is on your system

if you have (Windows XP Home Ed. sp2 ) then the cd will have to be that / if you have a cd with (Windows XP Home Ed. )you will have to slipstream (SP2 ) onto a disk that you create

this also applies to (Windows XP Professsional )

now if you do have the Windows XP cd with sp2 please follow these steps

performing a (sfc) system file checker

It is a scan that checks the core files & dlls of the (os) operating system and replaces them if they are corrupt or missing with the correct original version

#1 then select (run) , then press enter
a window will open
#2 type in ( cmd ) then press enter
another window will open
#3 type in ( sfc )then press enter
another window will open
#4 type in (sfc /purgecache) then enter / your pc will work like crazy / this helps in rebuiding the cache file (notice the space between (sfc & /)
#5 type in (sfc /scannow ) then press enter ( notice the space between the (sfc & / )

now a scan will start , have your (Windows XP software disk ready ) your pc may ask ... Read more

[Please note I have attached a couple of small screenshots for the following problem]
I have a pretty frustrating problem. I seem to have some hidden files and folders which I CANNOT view in the normal way.
Normally, if I have hidden files and folders and I want to reveal them, I do the normal thing and go to
Tools > Folder Options > View
And I check the box "Show hidden files, folders and drives"

However, I have noticed that a lot of my folders are not visible at all, not even the "transparent icon", even with this box checked, and only become available to see when I do a search for them.

For example, I have a folder with piano lessons in it, of ripped dvds and ripped cds, under the same folder "Learn & Master Piano"
All the ripped DVD lessons are visible in this folder, however, there are sub-folders under "Learn and Master Piano" containing the CD's called variously "Play Along CD 1" and "Play Along CD 2" etc. and there are 5 of them.

However, none of these are visible at all when I go into the folder "Learn and Master Piano". What I have to do is go to the search box and do a search for "Play Along CD" to reveal them in explorer.

I only came across this because it appeared incidentally in explorer when I was searching for other things.

This makes me wonder how many other thousands of files and folders I have downloaded or whatever are totally invisible !!

Hi was finding that many people are having issues trying to fix their folder options under tools. the actual problem was that it was not allowing you to change hidden file to viewable files and vice versa. well you guys can try this, i used a simple little program called kavokiller, now not sure what generates this problem with folder options but i remembered it happened after my computer had some trojans and worms, and i think a kavo . anyways here is where u can get it from. (or you can use my attachment)

Not able to see hidden files can also prevent u from properly cleaning your PC from malwares and virsus etc. so while this might work as a temporary solution it helps so u can really find whats your pc's problem that how i deleted some damn disgusting trojans.

its very easy to use, its not in english lol. just restart your pc in safe mode, unzip and click to open, then press the one and only botton you see just click yes to agree take about 3 seconds or depending on your pc about 30 sec the most . restart ur computer over again and it should work fine, please make you run and good virus scan after wards and ah.... yeah... I love nod32 sorry guys it works for me.

well hope this helps a bit...

Good afternoon everyone, Here is the problem. I am trying to get a standard view for the files under 'My Music' and all subfolders. Does not seem to work. Let us take an example: In the My Music\classical\ subfolder all the subfolders below that are artists names and the files may consist of mp3, mp4, m4a, flv, swf, some txt, occasional mpeg. It seems that if the folder contains all mp3 files then I can select 'name', 'size' & 'length' and in folder options I select view>apply to all folders then it will display correctly. But not if there are mp4, m4a, and flv mixed or some other combination. Then (whoever is in charge of my computer) adds all the additional columns and I wind up clicking away to remove the offending details only to have to do it again and again. Is there a way to do it 'my way'? Thanks for viewing!

I recently bought a second internal dvd drive, physically installed it, plugged it into the last remaining SATA port on the mother board.

When I inserted a data dvd, autoplay popped up giving me one option - to open folder to view files with Windows Explorer. When I clicked that option nothing happened.
When I insert a blank dvd, Nero opens its burning app as it is set to and I'm able to burn a dvd on that drive. Nero is also set to verify the compilation which it does with no problem.
When i reinsert the same dvd, the same option pops up with the same result - nothing.
When insert an audio cd, Winamp will play the cd but I'm not able to "open" the cd with Windows Explorer.

By trying all combinations of cables and dvd drives to make sure that both the cables and drives were working properly, I determined that whatever drive was plugged into that last SATA port would not function properly.

The only options in my BIOS that I could find referring to SATA drives was to enable or disable the SATA controller.

I'd really like to have both dvd drives fully functional and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Need some help with my system, as its behaving erratically and I suspect its a virus but I've no idea how to start to get rid of it.

Symptoms are as follows:

Everything has started from my Outlook 2007 going nuts. And I have had to completely close down one of my email IMAP account folders, as it can no longer be accessed. If I try to, Outlook when crazy, and kept flickering for a few minutes, without me being able to control it. The only way was to Task Manager > End process.

The same flickering has also affected other programs including Photoshop, Acrobat and InDesign. In the later three, it tends to stop after a while, but then continues if I do something else.

The problem with Outlook (e.g. the IMAP account) said that it was corrupted. Therefore I have tried to use scanpst.exe to at least to look at the .pst file. However, when I tried to find the the .pst email account file inside my Doc settings folder, I couldn't because it was hidden as a system file.

Hence, suspecting I have some kind of virus, I tried to uncheck the Do Not Display Hidden Files, Folders option -- only to find that there is only one option -- which is always checked. Therefore I cannot display all system files etc.

After a few attempts to alter the registery to SHOWALL, it remains locked. Therefore I suspect there is a virus problem blocking me from finding the .pst file, and to resolve my email problem.

I may have done something very stupid -- as I downloaded and ran what looked lik... Read more
