error 0x80070005: access denied

Q: error 0x80070005: access denied

I'm getting this error when I try to backup on an external usb hard drive. I've been doing this for months and this problem just began - I'm using Vista sp1. I can access the drive via explorer and copy/delete files so I'm confused why the backup program craps out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Preferred Solution: error 0x80070005: access denied

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a laptop running Vista home premium in a network environment. Server is running Small Business Server 2003. For almost 3 years I have been able to utilize this machine on the network despite it being a home edition. I have a couple of mapped network drives that I would just have to provide network log-on credentials to access. However, starting today I am no longer able to access the network or server at all, even by manually browsing to the server using \\sbs1. When trying to manually browse to a network drive or the server, I get the error message #0x80070005 saying that Windows cannot access \\sbs1, etc. I can ping the server from a command prompt without problem. When I try accessing mapped networked drives, instead of being prompted for log-on credentials I get an "Access denied" message. For one mapped network drive, I do get prompted for credentials, however, no matter what I log in with (myself, which is an administrator account, or the administrator account) I get a message saying "Multiple Connections to a server or a shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to this resource and try again." I'm puzzled why I have had no problems for almost three years until today out of nowhere. I tried a System Restore to last week before this started occurring to no avail.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Okay, so I can't ever remember having this problem before... but now it's an issue.
Simply put, I wanted to take advantage of the free upgrade to Windows 10, since it handles Retina displays much better than 7. But before that, I want to back up my files. So, I attempt to run backup, but as soon as I click start... I get the "Error code 0x80070005. Access is denied."
Tried a number of solutions I found on Google and Microsoft's website, including checking system services, turning off Avira temporarily, taking ownership of the external hard drive, running backup as administrator, and extending the drive partition to include some unallocated space at the top of the disk, but none of this worked. I still got the error.
Next, I tried AOMEI's free backup software, but it could not detect my operating system drive! In fact, it said I have 46GB of unallocated space in the middle of my Windows partition, which is weird because that doesn't show up in any other software... it can't even detect that any partition is NTFS. Granted, the partition setup on my internal drive is a (functioning) mess, but that really is strange...
At any rate, I'm trying to backup my files to a Toshiba Canvio External, which has 700+ GB free space and is formatted NTFS. I need help ASAP as the free upgrade is no longer available after July 29th...help!!

Are you having issue running Backup and Restore wizard.
Uninstall all third party antivirus programs.
Please try below troubleshooting steps.
1. Boot your computer into Safe Modeif the issue resolves within Safe Mode then one of the startup programs or services causing the issue perform a clean boot to find out which startup program causing the issue.
2. Open Command Prompt as a administrator and type Sfc /Scannow command and press Enter key to repair any damage Windows system files.
In case you are unable to start the System File Checker and you instead get the “Windows Resource Protection Could Not Start the Repair Service” error, you may want to check up if Windows Modules Installer service has been Disabled. To do so, type services.msc in Start Menu search box and hit Enter. The startup type of this service should be set to Manual. Double click the Windows Modules Installer service name to set its startup type to Manual.
3. Type Chkdsk C: /r  command to repair C: partition NTFS file system errors and mark bad sectors.
4. Check the Event Viewer for any error or warning logs that may give you clue what is causing the issue.
5. Run the bach script from the below link this script will restores Windows services default startup settings.
Set Windows Services To Default Startup

Hello kpwilder

Welcome to TSF

This can happen while running multiple process's (Batch Jobs) on the one user account at the same time, Fortunatley there is several things you can try to rectify this issue

Grant the Cmd.exe program Read and Execute permissions for the user account that the batch job runs under. To do this, follow these steps:

Method 1

1. Click Start, and then click Windows Explorer.
2. Locate and then right-click the Cmd.exe file. The Cmd.exe file is located in the %windir%\System32 folder.
3. Click Properties.
4. Click the Security tab.
5. Click Add.
6. In the Enter the object names to select box, type the user name that the batch job runs under, and then click OK two times.
7. Click Yes when you are prompted to continue.

Method 2

1. Click Start, and then click Windows Explorer.
2. Locate and then right-click the Cmd.exe file. The Cmd.exe file is located in the %windir%\System32 folder.
3. Click Properties.
4. Click the Security tab.
5. Click Add.
6. In the Enter the object names to select box, type Batch, and then click OK two times.
7. Click Yes when you are prompted to continue.

reboot and try backing up again

This issue is most likely caused by the firewall or anti-virus on the Windows XP computer. I suggest that you disable the security programs in Windows XP as a test.
If the issue persists after you disable the anti-virus and firewall, please let me know if you have enabled Simple File Sharing and the Guest account in Windows XP, or you are using the same username and password to access the computer.
Please note that if you enable Simple File Sharing, the Guest account needs to be enabled when you would like to access this computer. Otherwise, if you disable Simple File Sharing, please launch "gpedit.msc" in "Start"->"Run", locate to Computer configuration/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/User Rights Assignments, in the left pane file the key "Access this computer from the network". Make sure that the account you are using to access the Windows XP computer or its group is in the list. Also make sure that it is not in the list in the key "Deny access to this computer from the network".
Hope it helps.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 32 Bit and Kaspersky 2010. When I run an automated backup with Vista, I get the Back up error access is denied (0x80070005). If I temporarily disable Kaspersky then the backup will complete properly.

I've looked into trying to deselect any Kaspersky files in AppData or elsewhere that might be getting backed up and causing Kaspersky problems, but there seems to be no advanced menu to pick and choose exact files and folders.

Does anyone know of a way round this problem thats more permenant than disabling Kaspersky for each backup?

A:Kaspersky and Back up error access is denied (0x80070005)

Yes - completely get rid of KIS! The 0xc0000005 exception errors you are seeing in System Restore/ other backup is just the beginning. The KIS personal firewall, like its competitiors, tend to block local NETBIOS ports which in turn cause Windows 7 (& Vista) system services to crash.

Un-install KIS using the KIS Removal Tool (KRT) - http://usa.kaspersky.com/support/home/208279463/

Download the KRT; save to desktop. Then go to desktop, RIGHT-click on the KRT icon and select Run as Administrator. When complete - re-boot.

Reset the Windows Firewall to its default settings -
START | type ffirewall.cpl | select "Restore Defaults"

I would recommend MS Security Essentials --> http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

I've tried to create a backup of my computer files on an external hard drive three times but I get the same error message each time. Microsoft Security Essentials pops up and tells me that it caught a Trojan (Karagany.G) lurking in one of the shadow copy files. This is the directory that always pops up: file:\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy61\Users\cjlanc\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\55\63ca7fb7-144752c8 It's driving me insane. Some help please?

3 computers, desktop running Ultimate and backing up to AC-powered external drive and 2 laptops running Professional and back up to USB-powered external drives.. Backups set for full data and included system image for all 3..

No problem with desktop (which backs up daily), but unable to successfully back up either laptop since Windows Update installed SP-1. Fails as below:

Error: 0x80070005 - Access denied

Both laptops were set to run backups once a week (since the external drives are not plugged in at all times).. and, never had a problem with the backups failing before..

No changes were made before or after SP-1, checked permissions, all set to Full Control, log in as Administrator with UAC off (only one using the computers).. Ran chkdsk on both laptops and both external drives and no problems found.. Ran sfc /scannow and also clean for both..

Tried disabling all non-Microsoft services except for anti-virus and bluetooth (mouse is bluetooth) on one laptop and backup still failed with the same error.. Seems to get to approx 97% - 99% before it fails..

Have found older posts referecing making sure the D: drive is not set for backup or system restore.. Have never used it, backups have always been to the external drives (L: on one laptop and H: on the other).

Other than a problem with the fingerprint reader on 1 laptop after the SP-1 update (had to go back and install the original HP driver), SP-1 seems to be fine and do not really want to un-install.. Not sure if I even... Read more

So I am having a rather unusual issue here....

I have been fixing up a computer which was loaded with malware/viruses. I have run the below software programs to help clean up the system:
- Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
- Super Anti-Spyware
- HiJack This

After cleaning it up, I am running into one additional issue which is flagging my system as not being genuine

The system was purchased with a valid license key for Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

My thought here is that there is still some rootkit or rogue malware running which is preventing me access to this file. It is preventing access to other system files such as the hosts file, the ability to start/stop services through the services.msc console, etc.

Couple of things I have tried to resolve this:
- Microsoft support KB article 2008385 = https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2008385
- Disabled Plug N Play service within registry through CMD command
- Enabled Administrator account to attempt activation

After attempting these steps and performing a reboot, I am still unable to get around this unusual activation error. Please help!

Hi all,

I got me an Acer Iconica w3..... New little 8 inch tablet.
Setup like any other machine.  Connected to my Windows home server or Windows Server 2012 essentials.  Tried to run a backup using the server connector.  Backup failed with the subject VSS error in the application logs.  I also tried
the built in backup Windows 8 backup under control panel labeled Windows 7 File history system image.  No dice with either.

Investigating the error, I found some tests to confirm permission - all passed.  Trusting the error message to be accurate (permissions problem) I see direction to make sure the VSS service is started (I started and changed to automatic) and to grant
explicit access in the registry. I also see suggestions to grant the Network Service explicit rights to the computer using dcomcnfg.   No dice.
I've flattened and re-loaded.  Actually on a second machine with a newer image from Acer (first machine had a bad microSD socket that would not eject).  2nd machine exhibits the same symptoms - failing to backup
Compared settings to another Windows 8 machine - VSS service by default is manual and no explicit permission grants were in place.  e.g. changes above were unnecessary but made just the same as part of trouble-shooting
Clearly there is something more fundamental that I'm missing?  All other machines are running Windows 8 Pro or Enterprise.  This machine is running Windows 8 b... Read more

I realise that this is a bit of an old chestnut. I have read previous blogs about the same error message, but my problem is not exactly the same. I get the message when I back up my data onto a separate hard drive. The thing is I only back up my 'C' drive I don't bother with the 'D' drive as there's not much on there. I can back up everything in the list, except for the music. I have 'unticked' everything on the back up list and just tried to back up the music files but I get the Access is denied (0x80070005) message every time. I am worried as I don't want to lose my music files. I still have quite a lot of space on my PC and my separate hard drive (64GB of 250 left).

Any bright ideas?

I am trying to record a program on Audacity, taking input from a tuner. As this program is at 5.30 am, I want to set the Windows Task Scheduler to open Audacity at the appropriate time. I am using XP Home, SP3. However, I get the message "An error has occurred while attempting to set Task Account information. 0x80070005. Access is denied. You do not have permission to perform the requested operation." I am logged on as the administrator, but the Task Scheduler asks for a password, and if I provide one, the Task Scheduler responds with the above message.

So, my questions are, how can I get the necessary permissions and avoid this error so that I can schedule my Audacity recordings. Or, perhaps, is there a better way to time record from a tuner? (but maybe that's a question for another forum).

Many thanks for any help

I'm new to the forum and not overly computer literate so please be gentle !

I have a Sony Laptop with Vista Business.

I back up using the save and restore facility on the lap top to an external hard drive connected via a USB.

I have a daily back up schedule.

Befroe Christmas it stopped backing up - initially because the destination drive was full , and then because of the above error.

I've looked through all the answers to this on Tech Guy, I've re-formatted the destination drive, I've moved to manual back up , stopped the schedule , turned off de-frag tool.

Nothing seems to work.

It gets to virtually the end of the back everytime and then the error appears and the back up fails.

I HAVE managed to do a full back up once - backing up the whole PC as a shadow copy, but a cant do a scheduled periodic back up of files.

Occasionally It seems to co-incide with my security protection ( Microsoft essentials ) finding a tool that it says is used for downloading malware - as this keeps recurring and started about the same time.

As it stands I'm doing a manual back up of my files - but it is a bit of a pain.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to address the error so I can schedule back ups again

We're in the process of deploying Work Folders at a customer environment, the core infrastructure is Windows 2012 R2 based with a mix of Windows 7 Pro and Windows 8.1 Pro client machines.
The majority of the machines have been fine but we have a small number of users that have failed when we try to setup Work Folders with an Access Denied 0x80070005 error message, I've checked all the permissions and they are correct and another user on the
same machine works fine so it seems to be something specific to these users.
I can't see any errors in the event log related to Work Folders and there are 50+ other users working fine so I don't think it's an issue with the core setup. FWIW we've only seen this on Windows 7 Pro machines, I haven't had a chance to test on of these
users on a Windows 8 Pro workstation yet but that's next on the list to do.
I don't suppose anyone has any suggestions as to where I can look next?

I am having great problems with my laptop which is running Windows 7 (I am using my desktop to post this). I was saving photos with star ratings in a folder and deleting ones which I didn't want. Suddenly I was told I didn't have the authority to delete the photos (I am the only user and also the administrator) but I clicked to continue and the photos were deleted. Later I wanted to view the other photos and found that access was denied because I didn't have the right permissions to open the files in Windows Picture Viewer. I then found I couldn't open any of my photos in any folders. I don't know how to reset my administrator permissions.
On closing down the laptop I was told "settings.ini is being used by another process. Close the other program and click retry". There is no other program open. Hello I am unable to access my task manager on Windows 7 as administrator. Whenever I try to access it a Command window flashes on the screen quickly and that's it. Same thing happens when taskmgr.exe is clicked.
I was able to capture the command window error as the following:
C;\Users\<name>\Documents>REG and HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System  /v  DisableTaskMgr  /t  REG_DWORD  /d  /0  /f
ERROR: Access is denied.
Any help with this would be appreciated. I have checked that TaskMgr is enabled in the registry, and have ran AVG and Malwarebytes and they didn't come up with anything.
Thanks again for any help on this one.

A:Unable to access Task Manager - Error: Access is denied

blue gravity,
Please confirm that the command that is attempting to execute is the following:

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
This command is trying to enable task manager but the command prompt that is trying to enable task manager does not have the permissions to do that.
Please try the following:
Click Start
Type cmd
Right click cmd.exe
Select Run as administrator
type "REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f"
Press enter
Close cmd.exe
Log out
Log in
Try to open task manager
If this does not work, or you believe your computer might be infected, please follow the instructions found at Am I Infected, as I am not authorized to assist with the removal of malware.
Thank you,

I recently upgraded my entire computer (motherboard, harddrive, the works). I kept both of my old drives, and installed a new one. One of my old hard drives was converted to an external (not enough room in the case).

I'm trying to access My Documents on my (now) external hard drive, but whenever I try to look at these files, it tells me that access is denied.

Any ideas/suggestions as to why this is and what I can do about it?

Does the drive show in My Computer? With some USB cases, it matters what setting you use, master, slave, CS. If it's giving you the message that access is denied, you might have to Take Ownership of the files

I hope someone out there can help,as this is my last resort.

Whenever I am attempting to install anything that I have downloaded, I receive this error message. "Error-Access is Denied" // (no error number)

I have scoured the internet, and have tried everything that is out there. Turning off UAC, Running as (and from) administrator, taking ownership of a lot of different files/folders, turning off any/all firewalls, enabled the hidden administrator account and tried from there, as well as running CHKDSK and SFC with no problems found. I have restored to my earliest restore point as well, unfortunately it must not be early enough.

I hope someone can help me, my last option of reinstalling Windows 7 would be difficult, as I have lost my disc.

Thanks a lot for any help

A:Error- Access is Denied

Hi and welcome to the Forum. If you have lost your disc don't worry, all is not lost! Where did you buy your copy of Windows 7 Ultimate?

These pop up errors keep coming up even when my computer is just sitting there. I think it's linked to visual basic command line compiler. I'm thinking it's either a worm or that visual basic is malfunctioning and I should reinstall? I've tried 4 different antivirus programs (WSS, AVG, Avira, Trend Micro Housecall) half said there was a problem but couldn't do anything because the infected file is inaccessible and the other half doesn't detect anything. Anyone have an idea how to fix this?

"";"C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\vbc.exe (3664):\memory_00400000";"Virus identified Worm/Koobface.AG";"Object is inaccessible."

Ok, I have a quick question regarding the admin. tools on the windows XP system. There are three accounts on my computer, one for myself, my brother, and my family. My brother made it so that my account has no admin/user abilities whatsoever, and when I try to change it, it gives me the error. This happens when I try to download things as well, and it's very irritating. Is there ANY way to get around this? No, I cannot simply go on my brother's account and change it because my brother's acct has a pw. Is there any other way? TY.

I have Windows XP Home, Sp 2. I tried to make a change in the System Configuration start menu and got the message "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an
Administrator account to make the specified changes". I am the only user and
am the administrator. What does this mean and what can I do about it? The
change I was trying to make had to do with the Nvidia remote, but I noticed
that others resulted in the same message.

Hi Minnesota1, welcom to Sevenforums

I had this yesterday with a package of other problems.
Can you explain more about the issue? What type of environment your in, what user rights you have, where the program is running from?
A first suggestion would be to right click on the application, go to the compatibility tab, and select 'run as administrator'

I've looked for an answer to this challenge but so far the best I can do is joono's posting of 13 July 2006 http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/482888-installing-xp-service-pack2.html?highlight=joono that ended in the conclusion that the offending copy of XP was pirated. I know for a fact that my copy is legal, I got the discs it direct from microsoft, so that should not be an issue.

I did the SP2 install thing and after about 20 minutes I got an 'Access is denied' error after which the removal wizard unravelled everything and I was back to square one. After a bit of research I came across http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873148, which looked promising, and followed the very clear instructions as far as step 2.e. but I cannot find an error that looks like the one illustrated. The latest Error 5: Access is denied strings appear in the setupapi.log file in the lines:
