Lenovo yoga 3 14 - hard shut down multiple times -...

Q: Lenovo yoga 3 14 - hard shut down multiple times -...

Today I experienced 4 times a 'hard shut down' of my Yoga laptop when browsing Chrome.- the screen went black within 1 minute after launching google chrome and browsing chrome --> the laptop then 'died' in without any notifications or error. I did not ever experience this before. I was hoping that Chrome was the issue, so I de-installed it. Unfortunately that was not it ... Now the same happens when I pull out the 'power connection', the laptop then shuts down hard, and will not come alive anymore, I can only turn it on when the power is plugged.- this now looks like a broken battery issue, however with the experience of the multiple 'hard shut downs' on the same day (with power plugged) I am not that sure anymore... Is there anyone that has an idea what could be the issue? many thanks, Jeroen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Several times my brand new Yoga 900 shut off unexpectedly, visually looked like a kill-switch off, not a Windows shutdown or something. Different battery charge level: 30%, 55%, 75%, 95%--didn't matter; even on AC once. I had to turn it on and continue work. It irritated a log. But the last time it just didn't turn on. When I press Power button, the keyboard lits, the fan goes crazy, the screen stays black, and in five seconds it turns off. The same with NOVO button, but some times no fan going crazy, and no shutdown in five seconds, just nothing happening: the power button glows, the screen is black, no reaction on keyboard or screen touches--have to power it off in some time. I saw similar problems with Yoga 500 or 700, some say disconnecting the battery helps. I don't know about 500 or 700, but in 900 the battery is not detachable, and I assume taking the cover off to reach the battery would clear away the warranty, so that is not the solution in my case. Unfortunately, I am away from the States now, where I had a purchase, so sending it back not an option at the moment. Could anyone advise, please? Thanks!

Yoga 900 laptop shuts down abruptly while being in use. This has been happening since last couple weeks The laptop was purchased in 2016 summer. Installed anti virus and checked for virus. Nothing turned up. Installed all the latest Windows 10 updates. Nothing is helping out so far. What's the best way to resolve the issue? Is anyone else having similar problems?

I have recently purchased a Yogo 500 which has been refurbished by Lenovo. Everything seems fine once it's up and running but it seems to take an age to boot up past the Lenovo logo. I end up with a black screen and my curser shows a blue circle. This can last a good 3 or 4 minutes. I have the i5 version with 8gb RAM and a 8gb SSD alonside a regular HDD. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolved this? I do have a spare SSD I could pop in but I'm not exactly sure how I go about doing that... or if it would help? Many thanksStuart

Hi jimmisavage ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

On slow booting system , testing how it behaves on safe mode can help check if add on programs are causing this along with running diagnostics.  If no hardware issue detected on the test , then you may proceed checking with windows update if there are any process running in the background like installation and update.

Using another account such as local administrator  instead of a microsoft account isolates any Microsoft features and software usually synched with Microsoft Store applications can help.

Clean boot can make boot up faster by disabling non essential programs everytime you restart. Some would even disable hibernate to speed it up and likewise increase data space specially if you do not really need to use such feature.

Hope this helps answer your query.

I have a Dell Latitude C840 running Windows XP that I have had for several years now. I used to build computers years ago but with technology advancing so fast, I would call myself internediate, especially from the software side of things.

My computer has gotten quite a few problems; from a hard boot, I have to do three soft reboots before it will run decently. I can no longer run any streaming video without skips and pauses and I use Chrome on Facebook where I frequently play games and it has gotten to the point that I can only play for 10 minutes or so before the whole computer gets bogged down, CPU is running at close to 100% etc and it doesn't matter if I use Chrome, IE or Firefox, happens to all three. I also can't run more then 2 items at a time.

I just ran HijackThis and here is my log, if someone could help me, I would appreciate it, I am totally lost. Oh! I have also run Avast and a couple other utilities trying to figure things out but no go

Hi Neramusis, welcome to the forums.

Can you please post the full model number of your Thinkpad?

The only idea that I have right now is why do you try to update the drivers of you computer, specially the Lenovo Power Management Driver.

This are my tips about updating drivers on the Thinkpad:

1) Try first Windows Update and update all the drivers and Patches
2) Try Lenovo System Update to get any new/missing drivers.
3) Try to install Lenovo Settings and Lenovo Companion from the Windows App Store, Lenovo Companion also has a "update driver search"
4) Sometimes all that software does not recognize some updated / missing driver. Check Lenovo's Support Site and search for your specific model drivers.

I know that this is "trial and error", but I think that updating the drivers may help with this issue.

Hello, I would like to preface this by saying that I have spent a lot of time trying to figure this out myself and I would greatly appreciate your help. My laptop is a Lenovo Yoga (Machine Type Model 20CDX00) that has problems with shutting down and sleeping sometimes. The problem started after I restored my laptop with a clean copy of windows 10.  I installed all of the drivers and I also updated my BIOS.  I noticed that sometimes my laptop would not shut down completely and the battery would just drain in the blank screen that I couldn't do anything about.  This also happened with sleep to.  Not all the time, but sometimes.  I tried to turn of hibernate and also fast start-up.  But, that did not work.  I, then, restored my computer again and I tried to reset the BIOS to the original BIOS.  I am still having these problems even after the restore which makes me believe that the BIOS is at issue becuase it is ROM and would not have been changed by my restoring of the laptop.  But, I did try to reset the BIOS to a previous version.  So, I am stuck and I do not know what to do.

I bought my laptop in 2015 and unwarranted, I'd like some help to get full functionality back into my laptop. While the subject states my problem, I do have some ways of getting use out of the computer:It can turn on if the battery is fully drained and after the computer is plugged in; it takes 8 days to drain. [Pressing and holding the power button only results in the PC flashing its backlit keyboard.] The battery can recharge and the PC can run on battery just as long the PC does not shut down, go to sleep, or the lid closes.Battery removal with the PC plugged in: the PC can always turn on, but when closing the lid or shutting it off, the power cord has to be unplugged and plugged back in.Additional computer information:-Windows 8.1 with updates-Installed BIOS update and Windows hotfix update from Lenovo.com

Hi The laptop was working perfectly until i updated the intel HD graphics driver to version 23.20.16.4849 (27/10/17).  As soon as I did this, the machine would not wake from either sleep or hibernate mode when the lid was shut. When I open the lid it will either enter staright into a black screen, and I can hear the fan spinning with lights to the right hand side but no further activity. Sometimes the Lenovo log appears on the screen first and then enters into a blank screen state. I am on Bios Lenovo C6CN34WW 29/10/15 As soon as I press and hold the power button to turn off, and then turn on again the machine loads into windows perfectly, with a visible display.  Any suggestions how to fix this? Thanks

For awhile, my laptop (Lenovo Yoga 13) wouldn't shut down from the screen (i.e., pressing the shut down option on the screen) so I had to physically touch the power button to shut it off. Now that I can lock my laptop finally, and leave it overnight, I can log into Windows just fine...I'm using Windows 8.1, just s you know. My only problem now is when I shut it down...Once it's shut down, I'm left praying that it turns on again and boots up like normal....but it takes me, like, 8+ (or more) tries before it's back on again. So now, when I use my laptop, I lock it so that I don't have to worry about it powering on; I"m able to use it normally after unlocking it. But what could the reason my laptop shuts down (when I shut it down myself since I can't shut it off from the screen using my mousepad) and the power button being on and glowing but showing a black screen? That's what happens after I shut the power off and turn it back on again.   My laptop is 4 years old, so it's out o' warranty and I can't get it fixed by Lenovo.  I hear it's a hardware issue, but is it an issue with the screen itself or is it a motherboard failure specifically? How can I fix it if I take it to a computer shop and how much exactly is it gonna cost me to fix it? Help is appreicaited!

The ProblemsWon't start without being plugged into charging cableIf charging cable is removed or power outlet is turned off, the computer shuts down immediatelyBattery level stuck on 38% and will not increase.Screen flickers constantly The StoryI have had my Lenovo Yoga 3 14' 940m for a long time now and was very satisfied with it, up until a few days ago. Suddenly the computer wouldn't start. I tried holding the power button for +10 seconds and nothing happened. Then I plugged the charger in and it started up. However when i got to the desktop the battery level was at 38%. I let it charge for about an hour and when i got back it was still at 38%. Furthermore the screen was constantly flickering. In some applications the flickering is worse than i others, ex. Google Chrome flickers a ton but in Adobe Acrobat it is a lot less. Is there any solution to this? Help would be greatly appreciated

Hello there,I've had my Yoga 900 for over a year and a half, and a year into owning it, I began having charging difficulties. The only way to have the yoga charging would be if i bent or contorted the charging wire in weird ways and kept it in that position. I have replaced the charger 3 times (from different companies as well) and they would each work GREAT and normally without weird contortions for about 2weeks to 1 month and then the same problem would happen again. I'm thinking its a problem with the charging port? What does anyone think about this. Please help (im in the middle of studying for my licensing exam, this is terrible timing!)Thanks so much

I've got a relatively new Yoga 720 15". Ideally I'd like to be able to "dock" it on my desk by plugging in only the power cable and a USB C hub with my mouse, keyboard, monitor, and audio interface (behringer umc404hd) but I'm having trouble issues when connecting these to USB C hubs (I've tried a few). The mouse, keyboard, and audio interface have worked for me just fine for over a year on another PC, and they work with the Yoga as long as I only use the regular USB 3 ports. I can even use them all connected to a single USB 3 hub which is plugged into one of the regular USB 3 ports. The monitor works fine connected to USB C hubs or a simple USB C-to-HDMI adatper, and doesn't seem to impact the issues I'm having. ---------- Basically, it seems like the USB C port can't handle a very high data throughput: If I plug in the audio interface to the USB C hub, my headphone output crackles every once in a while and sounds slightly staticy. When the mouse is also plugged in, the interface seems to crackle more frequently and reliable whenever I move the mouse around. The faster I'm moving the mouse, the more crackles. The keyboard also seems to cause increased crackles when I'm typing, but to a lesser extense. The interface streams high resolution audio data with 4 channels out and 4 channels in and the mouse is a high dpi "laser" mouse, but neither one should even be a struggle over USB 2. If I plug in just the keyboard it seems to be fine, however with... Less than 2 weeks after the end of my 1-year warranty, my Lenovo Yoga 920 crashed. I've used Lenovo products for years and have recommended the Yoga 920 specifically to many of my coworkers, so when I experienced a hard crash (no blue screen, just a stuck image on screen) I assumed it was something Windows/Driver related. For the past two weeks I've been on a journey to try and resolve the issue but haven't had much luck. Below is a history of what I've experienced and what I've tried:Friday, August 2nd - Computer was plugged in and on, but not being used, when I found it unresponsive. I tried turning it back on and within 1-2 minutes of booting up, it would crash again. Any image on screen would remain on screen (sometimes with visual artifacts, sometimes without) and any music that was playing would be suspended indefinitely until I hard powered off.Booting the machine in Safe Mode would allow me to use the machine for any period of time - the 1-2 minutes before crash was only experienced under normal boot upSaturday-Wednesdays - No issuesWhatever was causing my crashes all Friday (until late in the night) was not causing it for the next several days. I used this time to back up my filesI used this time to verify I was on the latest version of Windows, that my drivers were up to date, and that neither Lenovo Bridge or Lenovo Diagnostics Windows found any errors with the machine.Wednesday, August 6th - Computer was plugged in and on, but not being used, and same as before, i... Hi Everyone, I'm at my wits end and was hoping someone might be able to help me understand what exactly I need to do, purchase to bring my laptop back to life. Long story short, I have had this for just over 2 years, no more warranty and the hard drive I believe is going out/has gone out. It all started with a failed windows 10 upgrade, kept looping, finally I blew away I guess everything on it. Now when I am trying to re-instal windows 8.1 it tells me that it cannot because the hard disk may fail soon. I can get mostly through the windows setup but it always ends up failing. My question is, can someone help me identify what exactly needs to be replaced? I am fairly tech savy good at following directions and installing things by myself. (garbage disposals, haha). What I am not good at is trying to track down what hard drive to buy would be? I hate to bring it to best buy as its $200 just for a diagnosis and then whatever to fix it on top of that.  Can anyone offer insight and help me become enlightened? Thanks so much, L

Hello, Yesterday I bought a new lenovo yoga 720 (15) along when lenovo active pen 2. The laptop is fantastic, but the pen experience is not great. It is not writing smoothly. I had to put some pressure to write on the screen. At first I thought the pen is faulty, however I noticed that at some parts of the screen the pen is able to write so smoothly, whereas in other parts, the pen is facing friction. I don't know what to make of it. I cleaned the screen, changed the nibs, tested on different apps (one note, xodo) but it is showing the same behavior. To be specific, the left bottom and right bottom of the screens are smooth to write on whereas the top area is causing friction.  Any solutions to resolve this?  Thank you

Hey Guys,Im trying to get a laptop working for my brother. He has a Yoga 500-14IBD. The laptop works perfectly fine with the current hard drive running windows 10.He has been sent out a new hard drive which has been preloaded with windows 10 but adapted with specialised software (which shouldn't be too important for the issue).I installed the new hard drive into the Laptop and it won't boot past the Windows Boot Manager. The laptop does recognise the Hard drive and see's it is connected but wont boot into it. Where it gets weird is that I tried this hard drive in my other Lenovo T420 Laptop and it boots into the hard drive no problems. This rules out hard ware issues. Is there something which needs to be adjusted in the BIOS to allow the Yoga to boot up into this hard drive? I have tried switching from UEFI Mode or Legacy BIOS mode but this didnt make any real difference. There was an error showing in Legacy mode regarding PXE-E61 Media Test Failure Error but this occurred when the laptop worked in my T420 so it shouldnt be related.  I have tested another Windows 10 installation Hard drive on the Yoga (the one from my T420) and it worked. Just a note the hard drive that isnt working is not and SSD but the ones which are working are SSD'sAny advice would be appreciated

HiI am new to Lenovo and just last week bought a Yoga 520 (Type80X80) Ideapad running Windows 10.I'd be grateful for some answers from the community re - 1. The hard drive capacity says 120gb. I'd like to upgrade to 256 or 512 gb SSD. How do I know if it is a 2.5'' SSD or if any free slot is available.Do I need to open it up (will it void the warranty?) 2.Can I then partition the hard drive and dual boot android and windows 10? 3.Can I use a Wacom bamboo pen with it (comes under budget)   Regards Simon Lenovo Yoga 520 (Type 80X8) Laptop Ideapad Machine Type Model - 80X800S4UKProcessor: 1x () Memory: 1x 4GB DDR4-2133 Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64(JP:Japanese) Hard Drive: 1x Wireless Network: 1x Ports: 1x 4-in-1 Media Card Reader (SD MMC SDHC SDXC) Camera: 1x Graphics: 1x Monitor: 14.0 FHD Included Warranty: 1 Year Depot

so our yoga 2 13 crashed - due to a bad hard drive.  in looking at the pages and pages of entries on this forum regarding hard drive failures in these machines i find it incredible that Lenovo doesnt do something.  When i called, i was told - too bad, you are out of warranty we wont do anything for you.  My response is that I will never again buy a lenovo product and will go back to Dell - i have Dell laptops that are 11 years old and still running, unlike my just out of warranty $1000 Yoga laptop.  such garbage they put out.

Hi all, I recently purchased a Lenovo Yoga 300-11IBR with the 32gb internal hard drive. I thought it would suit my purpose well as I only want to use it to run software to check error codes on my car (not much hard drive capacity required). I'm really disappointed though as I thought it would be super-fast to boot and use with 32gb SSD that only runs the operating software; how wrong I was... Long story short I?m trying to improve the performance and would like to install a 64gb SSD; I have remove the back and found the connector (SATA_CONN1) but it has no cable connector. Does this mean the motherboard will not support a SATA drive or does it mean I need a connector soldered on (this looks very tricky as the pins are so close together). See attached photos of the inside of my notebook and the connector cable I intended to purchase. Any help would be greatly appreciated; if I don?t get this resolved the notebook will be going in the bin and I?ve wasted a reasonable amount of money. Final resort is to down grade from windows 10 to windows 7 and free up some disk space. I?d like to do this anyway but struggled for 6 hours already to undertake this task; I keep receiving an Error Code: 0x6 Thanks, Richard

I'm running the latest version of Windows 10 (Anniversary Update - Build 14393.693) clean installed on  a Yoga 2 Pro (20266 / 80AY) BIOS 76CN43WW. The "Lenovo Yoga  Mode Control" version 2.0.0.9 (ymc.exe) has consistently crashed every day for the last few months. Crash reports are logged. Are there any plans to fix this issue any time soon? Best Regards,

Since you have to hunt around different Lenovo sites (and other sites) to find out about these softwares, I decided to make a post to get feedback from actual Yoga owners on how these programs interact, what they do, which ones are prerequisite, and which ones are unnecessary. Please don't take this as a blanket answer. This is just what I have found. It might be right - it might be wrong. I'm looking for others to post their experiences as well. Lenovo System Interface Foundation Driver - Necessary prerequisite (missing driver in device manager without it). It allows the Lenovo Utility and Lenovo Companion to work. Lenovo Yoga Mode Control - Necessary if you want to use your yoga to seemlessly change between all the different modes (laptop, tablet, tent, stand). This software is responsible for autorotating and putting Windows into tablet mode. Lenovo Utility - Recommended(?) This one I'm not too sure on. I remember that I was missing some function that I wanted but I can't remember what it was now. Maybe battery cycle count and health? Lenovo Companion - I don't have this one installed and don't think it's necessary but would like someone else to shed some light here.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now when I go online, IE automatically opens (I don't use IE, I use Firefox) and ads pop up. Also, Zone Alarm prompts me w/alerts regularly (esp. when I open a file or program) that <program name> is trying to access <something> which can track keystrokes, etc. I'm now also getting ZoneAlarm alerts saying that <random #s/letters> is trying to start automatically when I start the computer.

I downloaded hijack this, clicked scan button, and got this popup alert:

---------------------------
HijackThis
---------------------------
For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type:

notepad C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as 'hosts.' (with quotes), and reboot.

For Vista: simply, exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, choose 'Run as administrator'.

OK

Hit the OK button and here is the log:

A:I Am Infected. Can Only Boot In Safemode. Removed Multiple Items Multiple Times. Is Combo Fix My Next Step?

Please run this scan first. Combo fix may be the next alternative, but it is NOT a tool you should run without guidance. That can all be done from the HiJackThis malware removal forum. But we'll try this first. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed succ... I built a computer recently. Since day one I get BSODs but the drivers, and Bug/Checks listed are never the same.
I was thinking it couldn't be a single device or driver so I've:

Replaced the MOBO.
Repair Installed the OS.
Replaced the RAM.

It BSOD'd multiple times between each change.

The only things I've run are IE/FF and Ableton Live 9. Ableton is usually running during the BSOD but it was not the last time.

Thanks!

Welcome sfbybuss! Without looking at the file, since you say the lists is never the same and you built the computer, are you sure the PSU is up to speed? Latest MB BIOS?

I am trying to get my wife's new computer up and running without any BSOD or program failures. Note that the system was not initially set up to capture the dmp files so all the earliest ones are missing. I presented the initial problems to the original seller who recommended sticking with MSE and uninstalling Norton 360 and I did that. Another forum suggested that Virtual Memory was the problem and I disabled and restored VM. Still having multiple crashes and I am hoping that I can get real help here. I do note that all the crashes have ntoskrnl.exe in the driver stack although sometimes alone and sometimes with other drivers.
