DNS Caching problem

Q: DNS Caching problem

Hi

I have a company network with 2 internal dns servers on 192.168.0.7 and 192.168.0.9.
Using DHCP.

2 problem Win7 clients.

When I run ipconfig /all on both it shows both DNS servers as expected

We have a corporate server on AWS and it's IP address changed on Monday during a restart.
Shouldn't have but it did, so we are stuck with a new public facing DNS name for that server, so we updated the friendly CNAME record to point to the new address.

18 of our 20 internal clients, including Win7, 8 and 10 clients and Mac and Linux clients are all finding the corporate server now using the original friendly name.

But 2 Win7 clients are still not getting there.

On both, if we run
nslookup <friendly.domname.com>

It returns the name of of our primary internal DNS server (as nameserver) and the NEW IP address of the host address

So it seems that the client's base OS DNS lookup returns the correct IP.

If I paste that IP into either chrome or Internet Explorer, I get the correct website.

However, if I enter <friendly.domname.com> into either browser (and Firefox) a different website appears.

I can in Chrome test the dns resolver using chrome://net-internals/#dns which returns a list of addresses in chromes internal cache.
And I can flush that browser dns cache by clicking the "clear host cache" button

If I then try the same <friendly.domname.com> again, the cache list is re-populated with a bunch of urls accessed including

friendly.domname.com
IPV4

<old.ip.add.ress>

Which seems to indicate that the old ip address is now reused on the cloud and somehow the browser is overriding the settings in the actual DNS to resolve to a cached version.

In IE we have tried deleting history and cookies without effect.
Not sure if there is a facility to do something similar on IE to what Chrome does with DNS.

But ALL browsers on these 2 machines are still looking at the old ip address despite DNS saying something else.

How do I flush the entire machine and start from scratch dns-wise?

Thanks

I have windows Vista home basic 32 bit operating system. Recently i installed IE9 ans now if i open a website after clearing cache it gives HTTP code 200 on fidddler then on second session it gives 304 for most of the request . My temporary internet file setting is "Automatic". I checked on temporary internet files and nothing is seen there. If i do the same in firefox 4 then on second request it doesnt give 304 and content is served from cache and i am able to see the content there in firefox cache.
1). In case of IE9 if content is not there in cache then how it is giving HTTP response code 304 (not modified)
2). Is there any other cache other than disc cache if yes then how can i see the content of that cache.

A:caching problem in IE9

I recently installed IE9 on my Windows vista home 32 bit. Whenever I open a website after clearing browser cache then on fiddler first time it gives HTTP code 200 for all requests. When i check on browser cache all gif, jpeg, js are cached and expiry time is 1 month. But when i open the same page it gives HTTP Status code 304 for gif, jpeg and js.
Not able to figure it out why it is not picking the content fron the browser cache. Temporary Internet Files setting in set to "Automatic".

I have several blogs I administer. They are wordpress sites. Sometimes when I try and access them, I get a blank screen with only the words "It works!"

I have tried a cache cleaner called CCcleaner, and done all of the other memory dumps that are available thru Windows.

This problem occurs across all browsers, I have seen it in Flock, Firefox, Chrome, Safara, and IE 8, so its definitely a problem within my system.

hi,

i'm a newbie web designer, and i've got what seems to be a pb w/caching. the pb only occurs in IE -- not mozilla or netscape.

what happens is, the page loads and i go to mouse over an image where i've got image swapping set up for a mouseover. instead of just swapping the image, IE does another GET. once the mouse leaves the image, IE does yet another GET to redisplay the image it already had. i can keep doing this ad infinitum, it does a GET for every single image swap, even once it's gotten the image already.

here's weird thing #1: i'm preloading the images. looking at the web server trace file, IE definitely does preload the images, so it shouldn't need to keep GETting them.

weird thing #2: going to another page by clicking a link, then using "back" to get back to the bad page alleviates the pb; the bad page displays perfectly.

now here's weird thing #3: the pb goes away when i completely clear out the cache! if i manually delete all the files in Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 and then go into internet options and do it again so that IE knows everything's gone, then reload the page -- everything works fine, just like it does w/mozilla! no delays on image swapping! IE preloads the images and swaps them w/o doing any more GETs. i was thinking that if it were a pb w/the image not being cached, a sure way to reproduce the pb would be to clear out the cache. in fact, that solves the pb.

Hi,

At the moment we are running an online virtual world game with around 1500 simultaneous users in the evening and around 1200 new users a day. Unique logins are around 13000. They are mostly kids between 8 and 12 years old. Currently we are having problems with files not being cached in the browsers of our clients. We tried all kinds of different headers but to no result. This results in heavy bandwidth usage of our server giving us high costs. Since most of our users use Internet Explorer we don't want to rule out IE specific problems (if any exist). Last month we moved around 6000 gigs.

The situation is as follows:

We have 34mb worth of files ( SWF's and some MP3's) of which the main SWF file is the largest (8mb). This file loads all the other files depending on need. We are not using any get or post parameters on url's to load these files and the files are 100% static. We are not using any expiry dates or times. The only thing we basically use is if-modified-since in our headers. We don't do any frequent updates of our content.

Yet hardly anything seems to stay in the cache, with our own tests, it seems fine for a couple of hours but after a longer time ( maybe 24h) it seems to disappear from the cache without any serious browsing or downloading. Although we don't have hard evidence for it we don't think it is the cache of our client overflowing as it would require a lot of browsing and downloading for that to happen. Which is not very likely for an average... Read more

So I have Internet Explorer 7 beta 3 RC1 or w/e and recently it stopped caching my pages at all. I've set the amount of disc space to use to 70 MB and to let it Automatically check for updates of pages, and I don't delete the temporary files, yet whenever I go to GMail there is a noticeable pause on The Loading page. Normally it skips that page since it's already been cached, but nowawadays it stays there for like 1 minute. It doesn't cache any other page either, I've tried it with Google, my blog, TH, TSG, etc. Any help? I want it to cache properly so I can reduce wait times when browsing.
I've tried clearing all my temporary files (temp files, cookies, history, etc.), reinstalling Internet Explorer 7, and rebooting the computer and such but no luck.

Hiya

I've moved this to Web and Email for more response

Just to put your mind at ease, its not just IE7. I have IE6 on XP home, and it does it for me on Gmail. It just sits there, but if you click Refresh, it finds the page. I wonder if there has been an increase in users.

I know that they've changed their page layout recently, so maybe that has someting to do with it.

Or have I misread this post, and its with all websites? I'll see if someone can take a look at your HT log.

Hi all,

When you load a webpage, the files (images, ...) that the webpage contains will be downloaded. If the server hosting the webpage goes down while the files are being downloaded, then IE's Temporary Internet Files will contain partially downloaded files. When the server is back up and running, and you refresh the page, the partially downloaded files will not finish downloading, and will never be downloaded again. The webpage will never display the files that were partially downloaded, and the only way to fix this is to delete the Temporary Internet Files.

Other browsers do not have this problem. It looks like IE does not compare the file size in the Cache, to the file size on the server, but only compares the date, which is the same.

How to reproduce the problem (for developers):
-create a webpage that contains a big file (jpg, swf, or any file).
-on a client computer, clear the Temporary Internet Files, then start loading the page.
-before the file has time to finish downloading, stop and start the web server.
-look inside the Temporary Internet Files, and you will see a partially downloaded file.
-refresh the page, and the partially downloaded files will not finish downloading.

Note: I tried many different file headers, but it looks like whatever header you set for the file, even "no caching ..." headers, the problem always happens.

I just have a question about this. I got a vista home premium 32-bit gateway laptop. And I see the option to delete DNS Cache in CCleaner. All I'm curious about is, what is that really going to do? Anything major besides make my pages load .2 seconds slower?

A:DNS Caching

In general, it's not going to do anything other than force the system to go out and repopulate the cache as you surf the web.

Also, if the DNS Cache is "poisoned" it can prevent you from reaching a website that you want to go to.

Hello!

I am about to buy my SSD, but I don't know whether I can use the Crucial M4 64GB for caching, next to using it for my complete OS and a game (maybe two, 7 GB average). Because what I would like to do, is put my OS on it (Win7 64-bit) and the game. And then use (a part of) the space left (around 30GB, reserving 27GB for the OS and 3~4GB for the game) for Caching.

Will this work? Or can I only use the Intel SSD Caching on a empty SSD?

P.S. Someone told me I could only use ~20GB or 60GB for SRT Caching, I find this hard to believe, is it true?
P.P.S. Is it true I ought to put the SRT Caching to 64GB? Or would there actually be a difference if I would put my OS and Call of Duty 4 directly on my SSD?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hey,
I have been looking around for information about using a onboard msata ssd as a boot drive for fast start up etc.
I have found information about loading windows directly to this drive (setting this drive as c and lists of ways to move the my music files etc to another partition so that when windows starts it only reads program information. However it sounds as if all or most programs would be saved to the drive not windows only.
Other information has described setting this up as a cache via srt with the cache automatically recognizing whats used most often and storing it there saving the issue of less frequently programs slowing it down.

Does anyone use this system? Do you know of a good msata ssd?
Is it possible to set up a drive as a boot drive and only store windows there?
Can you use onboard msata as a boot drive for windows and another small ssd for srt caching?

Sorry about all the questions a total noob to msata and ssd caching. My mobo will have srt / onboard msata capability and Id like to use it.
If a thread already exists about this please let me know what to search by as I haven't found anything on mSata here.

Thanks

You could try to update the mainboard bios if there's a new version available. It won't definitely fix it to be able, but there is a decent chance. Also, the controller drivers should be updated to latest, if they are not already.

Hi,

We use a WPAD file hosted on a Websense appliance and use IE11 on Windows 7 x64.

We are seeing some performance issues with the Websense delivery of WPAD and have discovered that every computer is making a large amount of calls to the websense appliance to retrieve WPAD.dat. (Up to 1000 per machine in some cases)

We have worked with Websense and found that they were returning a 'no-cache' option in the WPAD response header. Via a patch we have had this removed.
However I still can't find a cached WPAD file on my machine that I am using for testing and have checked all the registry entries I can think of related to caching.

Ok, so my hard drive in ACHI mode does not allow me to enable write caching but in compatibility mode it does.

Should I enable write caching?

Also this whole thing about memory loss is bugging me on what they are talking about. I have a laptop with a battery and mostly has power. But what if power were to cut off or it gets somehow unpluged, will my HD be corrupt? or would that "Word" document I was working on that was not saved be gone, everything else will be fine?

Thanks

You can read this tutorial from Vistax64 on it. Basically, it's not recommended for laptops without a UPS. I believe if the power were to go out, only the temp. cache would be lost, so like your word document you were working on might be lost if it were to go out.

Also a tut on how to enable it with AHCI on, but I don't think it was relevant if you read all the comments in the tutorial.

Now, just today, when i start my computer and try to log into windows, it says my password is invalid and i should contact my system admin. Is this a problem with the way win xp caches the profile? Maybe there is a time limit that xp will keep a profile cached?
I have to dial-up using the VPN, so, the password isnt looking at the domain because my laptop isn't connected to anything until i pull up the vpn.

Please help.

Usually I only see this on newly built PC's or PC's that you have not logged onto for the first time.

From time to time I have seen this occur even on windows NT machines but have never seen "why".

Do you run your VPN as a service? If so have you thoughts about trying to log onto your PC as Adnmin to the PC VPNing in and then logging on as your Domain user ID and password.

the superfetch feature has seemed to stop caching as much...

ive had fresh install of vista ultimate for 2-3 weeks now and Superfetch was filling the 1.5Gb spare RAM with cache data (as it does) , now its seemed to have stopped even though the service is still running...

right now its saying 450Mb cached and 900Mb free ???

Now i was testing it on and off when i first installed Vista to see what the fuss was about and most of the time when it was OFF it would still cache to about the same figures as above but most of the time it would end up filling all 1.5Gb cache (yes even when off)... NOW its been on 2 weeks running and filling up the cache quicker than normal (as its learning) but then from yesterday its stopped filling it right up??? why is this???

I did install Firefox Pre-Loader and have uninstalled it due to problems with firefox actually NOT opening - I doubt that would have affected it

THANKS

Hi all,

Quick question. I have a spare Agility 2 64GB SSD doing nothing so I'm wondering if I can use it as a pagefile drive for my OS drive which is also an SSD drive.

*NOTE*

All the threads I've read about this have all been about using the OS drive whether it be an SSD drive or HD for pagefiling. I want to use a SPARE SSD drive to pagefile FOR my OS drive.

Is this even possible and if so, how do I do it?

A:Using a spare SSD for Pagefile and caching

Yes, it is possible.

The general advice is not to do it, since it can shorten the life of the SSD because the pagefile is written to often and SSDs have their limitations in regards to that.

But things have gotten better: Taking a Hard Look At SSD Write Endurance - Slashdot

It's for you to decide. I say better to make sure you have enough system RAM (8 GB is starting to get into the "a lot" zone for 64 bit OS - on a 32 bit OS, 4 is "a lot".)

I see you have 24 GB of RAM installed. The pagefile still does certain things, but will be used much less than a system with say 4 GB RAM.

If you do it, make sure TRIM command is active in Windows.

All you would need to do is tell Windows to set the page file to the drive, while deleting the current page file. Nothing difficult.

hey there my laptop came with a seagate hybrid hard drive which has 20GB SSD... recently i did a clean install of windows but now i can't seem to figure out what caching software came with the seagate hybrid drive.. any help would be appreciated.. thanks!

A:what caching software does seagate use

It may not have come with any such software, I've never had to install any when going to a new drive. Have you checked with Seagate or the maker/vendor of the Notebook/Laptop? Basically put, cache is a memory module on the interface board on the drive, holds data temporarily while writing to the disk/s.

This is the problem I have:

On Windows Vista Business machine.
I have created 4 identical CDs. They all have the same volume label.
I'm not sure about any possible serial number that I have heard people talk about.

I became uncertain about whether they had all been created properly and decided to check them one at a time in the same drive.
After doing a file comparison of the 1st CD against the same set of files on the hard drive, I put the 2nd CD in the drive and did the same file comparison.
Instead of it taking a couple of minutes, it took about 10 seconds, which makes me think that Vista is caching the CD contents somewhere,
and when a CD with the same volume label is inserted it assumes it is the same CD and just uses the cached contents.
If I reboot the machine and try the 2nd CD again, the file comparison takes about 2 minutes again, which you would expect, since rebooting is going to clear the cache.

Although Googling this gave me a couple of people with the same problem I can't find any info on the caching, and in particular, on how to turn it off.
I don't think this has anything to do with the "Write Caching" which I did find in the DVD drive properties.
Does anyone know how to turn this caching off?

Many thanks in advance....

On another thread I had stated that there will be a performance hit if you turn off write caching for a SSD. But on second thought, I am not so sure any more.

What write caching allows (in my understanding) is to accumulate records in a buffer so that so that they can be written to the disk in one big swoop. That is an advantage on a spinning disk because all those records are written during the same rotation - and there is also only one seek for the arm.

I wonder though whether that brings the same advantage to the SSD where access time to any place is the same - and it is usually only 0.1ms. There would be an advantage if the records were written in larger blocks from the buffer because the SSD's write performance grows as the block size grows. But if records are still being written e.g. 4K at a time, there may not be an advantage.

Does anybody know whether the blocksize for the write operations increases with caching?

A:For the write caching experts

Hi whs - I see your point about the "write caching" and the SSD. Actually I think SSD's do write smaller blocks of data even faster than large sequential blocks so you could very well be right.

It would be interesting to run a series of tests with the "write caching" turned both on and off- Checking the Windows Disk WEI and checking the results of some of the disk benchmarking utilities (like HD Tune and ATTO).

At the moment I have my "write caching" turned on.

Hello

I have an issue with my outllook exchange 2010 on my windows 7 machine.  Sometimes it will auto cache emails in my contact list when I start typing the first few letters, and sometimes it doesnt.  It is getting very annoying and frustrating.  Sometimes it also doesnt recognize a previous email sender when I click the 'To' tab for me to find it.

Any ideas or suggestions?

A:Outlook Exchange not auto caching

You may have to turn the cached mode off in Outlook, or, if you aren't connecting to an Exchange server, rename the old RoamCache folder.

Hello ladies/gents, I've got a rather frustrating problem which I'm hoping somebody can help me with.

The Company which I work for has recently acquired a hosted web security solution, which acts as a web proxy amongst other things.

We have got a DNS CNAME setup which refers to one of our webservers as 'wpad', and when IE is configured to 'automatically detect settings' - wpad is accessed and the proxy settings are obtained from the wpad.dat file which lives on our webserver.

The wpad.dat file contains proxy exceptions and rules which are generated by the hosted web security system.

The hosted solution which we're using requires that all users login from a known IP address - which is fine for our office users, but is causing problems for remote users. The default behaviour of IE is that if WPAD is not reachable, then proxy settings will be ignored and the user will be allowed directly to the internet - but unfortunately the wpad file is being cached on the local laptops causing the users to be blocked from the internet (as they're not from a known IP).

I've written a .bat script which runs a simple del \wpad*.dat /s command which the users can use to clear the cached file - but I'd like to prevent IE from caching the file in the first place!

I found a Microsoft article here: How to disable automatic proxy caching in Internet Explorer which unfortunately doesn't work for us. I setup a test GP object and performed the change manually to the registry, neither had an ... Read more

Hi,

My younger siblings surf the internet all day, oging to websites that are packed with images that fill up the browser cache and slow my computer to a hault.

How do I prevent specific domain names from downloading files (images, cookies) to my computer while still retaining their functionality?

A:Disable caching from specific URLs?

You could limit the cache size to a more managable amount...

- Control Panel
- Internet Options
- General tab -> Temporary Internet Files -> Settings
- Change 'Amount of disk space to use:' to 150MB or less
- Click Apply then OK
- Clear the cache/cookies etc
- Restart and see how that goes :-)

Also, you can change the location of the cache to a different partition with more space too...but if you're experiencing slow downs caused just by cache, you may also want to think about getting more space for your C drive as you may end up losing or corrupting data.

Hope that helps :-)

Hiyas, ok when running bootvis to see my system boot up time I see,"Disk write cacheing is disabled". Now how the heck did I disable this, and how do i reenable? Could this be turned off by default whenever a bad block is detected?

EDIT: I tried to optimize it and the process did nothing.

A:Enable Disk Write Caching.

Open My Computer right click your harddrive choose properties then the Hardware tab, then properties again then the Policies tab and see if "Enable write caching on this Disk" is checked off.

Hello all! I have two concerns...

1. My external HDD has 64mb of cache and is connected via Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) 1200va along with my entire computer. Should I enable write caching, and how will enabling it benefit me?

2. I have been using ShadowProtect to backup my data and OS; is it okay to defrag this external drive? Will it negatively affect my backup data?

Thanks everyone!

A:Write Caching and Defragging External HDD

Question 2. If the back up is on the external drive do not defrag, you can lose all of your data and then you have to start over.

Have you double checked to make sure you used the correct update for your BIOS? It would be unusual for a BIOS flash to not work correctly unless it failed completely, but it might be worth a shot to try to flash it again with a newly downloaded update.

Is there any means of instilling Floppy Disk Caching in Windows XP?

I.e., anything similar to (pre-NT/2000/XP) SMARTDRV’s option to cache floppy disk drives?
