Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Gen - Blue Screen after wake up from sleep/hibernate mode

Q: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Gen - Blue Screen after wake up from sleep/hibernate mode

Hi Lenovo I have purchased 2 new Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Gen (Type 20KH006JMD) in December, and both laptops have problems with Blue Screen after wake up from sleep/hibernate mode. I doesn't happen every time, but very often. Both laptops have been updatede with the latest firmware and drivers, with Lenovo System Update. One laptop have been reinstallede with Windows 10 Enterprise, and the other has the preinstallede Windows 10 from Lenovo. Is there a known Blue Screen problem with the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Gen ? Regards,Lars

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Over the past several years there are many posts of users experiencing variations on this problem with X1 Carbon and X1 Yoga of various generations, including the latest ones (I provide a list below). That is, the systems often cannot come out of sleep mode in some way, shape, or form. I had this problem on my own brand-new X1 Carbon 5th Generation, right out of the box. In my instance, I noticed this issue in the following two scenarios: -After having gone in to sleep mode, once I opened the lid, or press power button once:power light goes from blinking to solid onscreen stays blank/blackseems that if the machine is going to be in the frozen state, keyboard presses do not "unsleep" it (which they normally would). Closing the lid causes the power light to go to solid on, but then opening it again does nothing.in a couple of rarer instances, the machine actually did come out of sleep but then instantly the screen froze (but this was quite uncommon, mostly it just wouldn't come out of sleep at all)-After passing the initial boot screen of Lenovo, the next part shows the Lenovo logo but without the swirling dots and is frozen (the power light would show on)Under both conditions: The power light is solid onThe keyboard lights functionality works: backlighting, FnLock light, mute lightSometimes you can hear the fan workingPlugging in to external display does not display anything on itThe only way to rectify is to do a hard shutdown by holding the power key With... Hi everyone!

I've been having a problem with Windows 7 recently on my new computer that I just got a couple weeks ago. The problem is that my computer will have a blue screen error when waking from sleep mode. I don't see the blue screen at all, instead, when waking from sleep mode, I see the BIOS screen and then it goes through the typical startup process as if the computer had been powered OFF instead of put into sleep mode (however, I know it was properly in sleep mode, as the power light on my tower flashes continually rather than shutting off during this mode). I get the message that Windows did not shut down properly and have the option to boot into safe mode, etc. When I boot back into normal mode I receive a message in Windows saying windows has recovered from an unexpected shut down. I follow the prompt to check for a solution, but get no solution.

When left alone, my Thinkpad will eventually go into sleep mode or hibernation mode and will not wake back up. The power light slowly flashes on and off, and the only way to get the machine working again is to long-press the power button, then power back on. This is obviously very frustrating, and constantly causes me to lose work. This issue has been happening since January or February. I've done every required and optional update on BIOS, Windows Update, and sleep button drivers. What else can I do to resolve this issue?

I'm having the same issue with my brand new ThinkPad X1 Carbon.  The touchpad usually works fine, but then sometimes after waking from hibernation, it's very sluggish.  I have to swipe for a long distance just to get the pointer moving, and the touchpad is not very responsive to taps.  After a restart, it works fine.  It's also strange the the issue doesn't occur every time I wake from hibernation - only once in a while.

Lenovo, any fix for this?

Newly, a bad problem has been appeared: when I put the system to sleep for a prolonged, the system won't wake up (the power LED flashing, Bluetooth LED and CPU fan being on). After force shutdown, in the boot process BSD error occurs and after several restart, finally Windows will boot. The BSD occurs when I turn on the laptop after a prolonged shutdown or hibernate also. I emphasize that the problem occurs when sleep conditions (or being turned off or hibernated) is for a long time (more than an hour) and in short time periods, there is no error!!!! The computer restart command works properly (shutting down via the Windows and booting again). I tried several solutions from internet search as followed without permanent success!1. Check disk (with /f and /r flags)2. sfc /scannow3. Power management modifications (disabling hybrid sleep, disabling HDD turn off, disabling hibernation, disabling wake up timer)4. A:X1 Carbon: after opening the lid in sleep mode it does not wake up

Hi Asher,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that your Lenovo ThinkPad X1 carbon doesn?t wake up from sleep properly.

I would suggest you to try installing the latest version of display drivers and Lenovo Power management driver and check if it resumes from sleep normally.

If the above said didn?t help, try the "reset" hole on the bottom of the laptop. You'd use a paper clip to trip the switch.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.

My ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Gen (2018) does not wake from sleep mode when plugged in, with the lid open. I have no trouble using the computer when it goes into sleep mode with the lid closed: when opening the lid, it immediately wakes. When the lid is open and the computer goes to sleep, I cannot wake it with the keyboard, trackpad, or power button. I have no other option than to force a power cycle by holding the power button until the machine turns off, then turn it back on again. My Windows power settings are "Balanced," with all settings default. I have the latest build of Windows 10 installed.

Hi, I've got two thinkpad lenovo S1, one works fine when going to sleep but with the other one I've been having a problem for a number of months now and it's becoming more frustating. Basically, I'm using the laptop then I leave it for doing something else and when I come, it's gone to sleep. Fine, the problem is that I can see the 'red light' blinking but if I press any key or I press the power button for a little while the laptop doesn't wake up. It just keeps with the blinking red light.  Sometimes, not many, it does wake up but the others, I have to press the power button for a long period, switch the laptop off and start again, losing all my sessions and opened windows in the process.  Any idea what could be causing this issue and what I can try to have it sorted? Thank you guys!

Hello all, I bought my lenovo Edge 2-1580 in December, but recently, the display won't turn on after I wake it up from sleep mode. The rest of the notebook still turns on and the power button is lit, but the screen will stay black even if I move the mouse or press any keys. I have to do a manual shutdown and then turn it on again, which works but then the problem occurs again when it goes to sleep mode. I've updated the drivers and disabled the notebook from going to sleep, but if I manually put it into sleep mode the problem continues. I've seen this as a common issue regarding Windows 10 as well. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

A:Lenovo Edge 2-1580 won't wake up after sleep mode

I just resolved this issue recently with my Flex 3 1580, so hopefully my solution works for you.  First, update the video/graphics driver (intel or nvidia) from the Drivers & Software page on support.lenovo.com.  Test sleep mode again.  If the screen is still not turning back on, then update your BIOS.  Back on the Drivers & Software page, look for the latest BIOS update and run it.  In both cases, but especially for the BIOS update, make sure your laptop is plugged in.

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

Hello, I have an Ideapad 510S13ISK on Windows 10 bought less than a year ago. After installing the Updates for windows (Version 1709) on December my pc started not to wake up from sleep mode, neither closing and opening the screen nor trying to wake it up using the power or any other key.I tried previously to update all drivers from Lenovo's support site. Then i tried to use a restor point created before the Windows Updates, but they still remained installed. At that point i reset the pc using the reset option by windows but the problem was still present.I updated again all drivers after the reset but nothing, it doesn't wake up. Precisely the pc seems to wake up but the screen doesn't, and it "flashes". Here a video of the probem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LntcxCrlZqQ I'm sorry for my english, hope you understand. Kind regards. Marco

Hi, I would like to get some help please. I got my Sony E series laptop with windows 7 on December 23 2010 I sent it back to the person I bought it from in February 2011 because it was not starting I got it back in March 2011 and it worked great. However, when I got ti back he changed a couple things on it, he installed a new cam program (nero) deleted the old one along with the bluetooth software that came with the laptop.
This week I put it to hibernate twice and when I came back to use it I found it had cut off. Upon restarting it I saw it was not shut down properly. Then I decided not to put it to hibernate but to put it to sleep, the same thing happened. A box came up saying to check for solutions I did and I also checked to see what was the problem (see below). Attached also is the result of a program a friend sent to diagnose what went wrong (i think). Thank you in advance.

Hi Issue: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen black screen / 'screen off' on resume from sleep I know this issue has been posted about several times regarding the X1 series but .... none of those threads seem to have any kind of answer to this problem. This seems like quite a horrendous issue for a +1500 to have !! Constantly 'hard rebooting' and losing all my open work is seriously seriously annoying. Please note: My drivers are 100% up to date based on Lenovo's own update software. I have all official Windows 10 updates issued to date (21 aug 17). These are the patterns I've noticed: - It doesn't always replicate the same behaviour: after resume from sleep sometimes it's 'black' and other times it's fine. I'd say 66% of the 'lid openings' it's OK but 33% of cases it's not.- I've found that if I shut the lid again and reopen (often 3 or more times and waiting 30+ seconds on each open then 30+ seconds on each close) then I can eventually 'force' it to turn the screen on.- If I 'manually' set the unit to sleep from the start menu rather than just closing the lid, I'm pretty certain that it *does not* exhibit this problem. I'll be 100% certain once I've tried this a few more times.-  I've removed all USB devices from the laptop one-by-one and waited for the problem to reoccur thus ruling out any single or combination of USB devices.- I have the 'lock screen' shown when it does successfully resume from sleep. - The screen 'blackness' looks t... This is my third X1 (all different generations) and I was very happy up till now. The problematic one has a Skylake processor and 512GB SSD and it seemed like a really nice config. The problem is that it doesn't want to shutdown nor wake up from sleep.First symptom: when shutting down, the pc seems to have shut down, but is still draining battery. If the keyboard FN-lock button is lighted, you can notice that this stays on. Also the fan will stay on if it was running before. The keyboard is even still responsive and you can turn on and off the different LEDs.Second symptom: when the pc goes to sleep, there is no waking it up. Also here the keyboard stays responsive for fn-lock etc.I've tried many things: reinstall windows 10 from scratch, reset the bios, upgrade the bios. Then Lenovo was actually very helpful to start: they swapped out the motherboard and when that didn't work, shipped the pc to a repair center. From here it went downhil: the repair was done in less than 5 hours according to the ticket (so I was impressed) but when I got the pc back I noticed why: they didn't repair it. They put on an image of windows 7 and since there the problem was not visible, called it fixed. Very frustrating. I put back windows 10 and guess what: the problem was exactly the same. When they shipped the pc, they had created a new ticket in the system, closing the original one. Now they even closed the second ticket although I already commented that the pc still doesn't work as it is supposed... Read more

Hi,

After a sleep or hibernate and logging in, I have a black screen that windows reported a blue screen later. Could you help finding the problem?

- x64
- The original installed OS on the system
- DELL OEM version
- What is the age of system (hardware)? 1 week
- What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?) 1 week

Thank you in advance!

"It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception.

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash.

As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds.

If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating.

Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU.

Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference... Read more

After a period of non-use, the laptop goes into "sleep" mode where the screen goes completely black and the white power light is a steady white color (i.e. not flashing).  At that point, I am unable to "wake" up the laptop by clicking a key, pushing the power button or clicking the mouse.  Nothing works.  I have to hold down the power button and do a hard boot.  Very annoying.  Any fixes?Note:  I went to the settings and chose "never" for sleep mode.  That does not fix the problem.

Dear support team, I have a very new B50-80 - 80EW Lenovo laptop model,  running with Windows 7.When I try to wake up it from the sleep mode, the screen is always black. The laptop seems to be restarted OK but the screen is totally switched off. After that, only the complete shut down is the solution for the sleep mode recovery.I am afraid is something related with the power management or with the BIOS drivers... do really need my new Lenovo be restarted OK from the sleep mode.Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello all,

I've scheduled my PC to wake up at a certain time with vista's task scheduler, and when it wakes up, I always see black screen on my monitor instead of desktop.

If I move my mouse or type any key during a black screen, it turns back to desktop.

I've searched around the net, but I couldn't find a solution...so I've decided to ask.
I really need help on this one.

Does anyone have any solution for this?

Thank you.

A:My PC gets BLACK SCREEN after unattended wake up from sleep mode

have you looked in your power settings to see if you have the display set to turn off.

that could cause it.

Whether I choose any option other than to turn PC off, instead of tapping spacebar on my MS wireless keyboard I have to tap the button for power on the tower, then the monitor turns on as the fan runs, but always a black screen. So then I have to do a manual boot and select to start normally.

Started a week ago, around the same time as a graphics card failure. I installed a new PNY GeForce, updated ALL drivers on my Gateway DX4710-UB301A, (Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit, AVG antivirus free 2014) played with power management and startup config settings, trolled forums, performed malware scans, and still can't figure out the issue.

Please help!

Hello,I have a lenovo y700 on Windows 10 and when I put my laptop to sleep, I am able to turn it back on. But sometimes the screen stays black and the keyboard lights are on. Such that the computer did start up but the screen doesn't want to.The only way I am able to fix this is buy putting the computer to sleep multiple times and then wake it up back again and after once or twice it starts to work. The solution (fool-proof) is to hold the power button to shut it down and then start it up again.I bought this laptop a week ago and (yes) I updated all my drivers(including NVIDA GPU) and windows updates. I also don't have that many background apps running. Here are my specs:Lenovo Ideapad Y700-15 Laptop - 80NV005FUS Processor - 6th Generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ (2.60GHz 1600MHz 6MB)Operating System - Windows 10 Home 64Memory - 16.0GB PC4-17000 DDR4 2133 MHzGraphics Card - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 4GBHard Drive - 1TB 5400 RPM+128GB SSDThanks for your time, cheersBouga

A:Lenovo y700 screen doesn't wake up from sleep

Hi bouga ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Checking on the support site for   Notebook IP Y700-15ISK I7 , seems no BIOS update needed for this model.
Typically even on Win Vista and Windows 7 that issue with sleep has been related to hybrid features.

Method 1 : You may try to disable it using the cmd elevated for the command  powercfg -h off .
Check on this video link for the guide steps

Method 2 : Setting Power option to High Performance instead of conservation mode . then manualy setting sleep on the start icon

Continue to apply neccessary updates that may correct this issue but for the time being , you can use Method 2 as alternate solution if method 1 fail to correct it.

Hope this helps.

Regards

I just got my Thinkpad X1 Yoga and here's the question: how do i turn on the screen when it's in tablet mode without folding it back to the laptop mode and hitting any keys? I thought it's like an iPad just by clicking the power button but it doesn't seem to work. Now I've been folding it to the laptop style and enter any key to wake up the screen but how do just wake it up as a tablet?? Thanks!

It should work with the power button, but it seems like it requires a relatively long press, like half a second.

Recently, my X1 Carbon 5th started to show a blue screen for a split second on wake from sleep before proceeding normally. I'm guessing this was not the case before a Win update. Not sure though. This is mildly worrisome or at the very least annoying. Is there a specific reason for that or even a solution? P.S.: Had to start a new topic as search results were exclusively for the blue screen of death, sorry if a double thread.

Hi The laptop was working perfectly until i updated the intel HD graphics driver to version 23.20.16.4849 (27/10/17).  As soon as I did this, the machine would not wake from either sleep or hibernate mode when the lid was shut. When I open the lid it will either enter staright into a black screen, and I can hear the fan spinning with lights to the right hand side but no further activity. Sometimes the Lenovo log appears on the screen first and then enters into a blank screen state. I am on Bios Lenovo C6CN34WW 29/10/15 As soon as I press and hold the power button to turn off, and then turn on again the machine loads into windows perfectly, with a visible display.  Any suggestions how to fix this? Thanks
