AC adapter plug falls out of jack!

Q: AC adapter plug falls out of jack!

Has anybody else had this problem?  I have a Vostro 1500 -5 months old and Dell haa sent me a replacement AC adapter but it still has the same problem.  I do move the laptop around a bit, but never pulling on the cord, and yet the plug just falls out of the jack while I am working.  My adapter is Rev 03 which is pretty new, I guess.  Right now I am working with someone else's adapter which is Rev 02 and seems a little more stable.  Is it possible that the plugs are different? Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: AC adapter plug falls out of jack!

possibly the plug on the laptop where the cord plugs into is loose.. meaning that no matter what adapter you plug into it, being new or used, it will fall out easily..

Recently purchased the XPS 17 laptop, and first thing I noticed when I plugged in the adapter is that there is entirely too much play, it flops down and has fallen out quite a few times already.  Have several other DELL laptops and those are still nice and tight even after years of use~ did they give me the wrong one??  I see no reason why a brand new plug/laptop should be this loose?

A:XPS 17 NEW adapter plug loose and falls out?!?!

There is a simple resolution. Dell has not provided the @malkboy explanation to it phone support, engineering, tech, Terry_B or its partners.
Dell has not made an official statement regadring the design, the problem or a fix. Until then we can assume its a problem because we the customers don't like it.
@melkboy - were it the case that this is the design to prevent the cost of replacing a motherboard, etc., then Dell should so say. As it is Dell has burdened the cost of replacing my XPS17 2x, sending me an XPS 15, providing a daughterboard repalcement, 3x a new powercord and my loyalty and business. I have BEGGED to peak to someone with knowledge and no one has come forward to make your explanation.
@Terry_B has provided the best communication and there has been no communication from him to this effect.
Its a bad design, Dell's intent was not to prevent damage from tripping. Dell is running away from its customers and this problem.

Okay, first let me apologise for the vagueness of the following post.

The jacks (or plugs? not sure of the name for it) on old headphones, some microphones, guitar cables etc... are big, as compared to most headphones you find nowadays, which have small jacks. Now, is there an adapter I can get to make the old big jacks fit into the new smaller sockets, if so, what does it look like/what is it called?

Thanks, and sorry once again for the infuriatingly vague post.

I just got a Hp Envy laptop and I can't plug my headphones into the headphone jack.  I've never plugged them in before which is why I'm confused.    Right now, when I try to plug my apple headphpones in, only a small part goess in and then they don't go any further.  I think there may be something stuck inside the jack.  It looks like there may be a small clear ball in there, but I've never seen it before.  Am I just using the wrong type of headphones? Or is the ball supposed to be there and I'm supposed to take it out somehow? ANd if there actuallly is something stuck in there, any suggestions as to how to take it out?  Thanks in advanced!

A:Headphones won't plug into headphone jack

Hello @mkoo , Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand you're unable to connect headphones to your notebook. There shouldn't be anything you need to remove from the port. Some models have multiple output ports so make sure the port you're connecting to has the following label:  If the port has that label and you're using standard headphones with a 1/8" connector (standard size for most headphones) there shouldn't be anything stopping it from going in all the way. Check the connection on the headphones and tell me if it has 2 or 3 rings on it like this: As you can see the left jack has 3 rings and the right has only 2. Lastly, try your headphones in another PC, iPod, or audio device to make sure the headphone jack is correct. If it works in everything else there is most likely something blocking the jack or you are connecting it to the wrong port. Let me know if this helps.

Hi -
Sorry but I don't know the correct term for this jack.

We have a notebook computer - HP, 4 years old, Win 7 - that requires the speakers to work and be loud enough to hear at the other end of the house. For whatever reason the jack that comes out the front of the computer and runs to the speakers (the built-in speaker is barely audible) has stopped working. Sometimes it works a little, especially if I sit there and jiggle it and don't let it go or walk away. It's a long jack.

Is there a way I can plug this into something else so that we can hear the speakers?

Any help will be appreciated.

Doug

Cambridge Soundworks FPS2000 Power Plug/Jack Problem

My subwoofer seems to not be recieving power from the cable. It's gradually spiraled downward, at first my subwoofer would cut out sometimes, but if I jiggled the plug around a little it worked, then it started doing it more and more. Until it got to the point where the speakers would not work unless I took a piece of tape, applied it under the subwoofer, looped it over the power plug, pull it down as far as it would go, then reattach it under the subwoofer again, which holds the power plug down. That worked for about a week. Now, it won't work at all. I've tried almost everything, aluminum foil, tape, etc., thinking it to be a problem with the contacts. Apparently it's not...Nothing works.
I'm wondering if anyone has had this problem, or has some kind of solution for it!
P.S. -> I still have warranty coverage on it, I've only had them for 10 months, on a one-year warranty.

Thanks!

A:Cambridge Soundwords FPS2000 Power Plug/Jack Problem

I'd agree that it is the contacts. Since the Warranty is still good, you might be more comfortable going that route, personally I'd check the continuity then resolder any bad connections.

recently bought a Dell latitude E6420 i5-2520M 8GB and I am experiencing a very annoying issue with the speakers.
The sound coming from the speakers worked until I plugged in the headphones jack into the computer for the first time - when I unplugged the headphones internal speakers stop to work completely.
What I have tried so far with no success:

Uninstall and reinstall windows audio/sound drivers
Tried Realtek drivers
Disabled headphones
Recovery and reinstall Windows 10

What is strange is that every time I uninstall and reinstall the sound drivers the speakers start to work again until i plug the jack of the headphones and again speakers stop to work. Any Idea?
Please let me know what you need to know about my computer to better understand the problem and I will amend the question accordingly.
Thanks!

I'm not sure about that particular model, but you would think it would be like anything else, just soldering a new plug onto the motherboard. Not something I could do, but a laptop specialist can do it I would think.

Hello all,

My daughter has a HP laptop and she cannot use it as it wont turn on. I thought it was the a/c adapter but it is not (other daughter has the same machine). I think the problem is where the adapter plugs into on the laptop. Can this be replaced or is her laptop broken completely?

Please help, she is driving me mad x

A:Cannot plug A/C adapter in, please help

Which laptop model is it (get the info from the label on the bottom, not the bezel or plastic near the screen.
The adapter plug can be repaired by a skilled technician... but the cost is often as high as $175... the cost of a new motherboard. The part itself is sold by HP for about $40 from their "support" center, but should really only be about $6.00 on eBay. The trick is the soldering, which require skill and a lot of experience.
When we know your model numbers from the bottom sticker, we can perhaps be of more help.
It would also be helpful to know the city near where you live that might have technicians.

I am traveling to Hong Kong in a couple of months. My HP laptop is from the US. It has an external power brick that takes 100-240V.

My question is about the cord that goes from the power brick to the wall outlet. The cord has a US plug. Does the cord also take 100-240V and I just need to buy a plug adapter, or does the cord only take US voltage and I need to buy a new cord?

A:Buy plug adapter or new power cord for travel?

You just need a plug adaptor, the power brick and the cord itself already supports International Voltages (worldwide)

(e.g. Hong Kong uses 50 Hz, 200/220 V, so you're pretty much covered there.)

My Dell D800 laptop stop working.

When I plug the ac-adapter the power light goes off on the adapter. It is obvious short on the motherboard. I did took it apart and look for some problem around DC-jack, but I don't think the problem is there. All the accessories are off . It is only mobo now by it self and does same thing. Anybody knows where I should look for the short. Which chip or diode it could be? I heard it is very common problem with D800 and D600 models. Since I am pretty good with soldering I think, and it is my hobby as well I would like to repair the mobo my self instead replace. Definitely would be much cheaper as well.

Thanks in advance for any input on this matter.

A:Dell D800 AC adapter turns off when plug in

Some laptops have a separate internal DC converter, and some DC converters are part of the motherboard. If you haven't tried another AC adapter, I would do that first. After replacing the AC adapter, check the DC jack for a high resistance using a good multimeter... A normal resistance would be around a half Meg ohm. If the internals are shorted, the resistance would be much lower. Unless you have the skill and tools to do surface mount soldering, I wouldn't attempt a repair

a little bit of background first. i no longer have a battery for my laptop. i can only use it when the adapter is plugged into it. yesterday i tried turning it on, but it doesnt. this morning i tried turning it on again and it turned on, for a few seconds then it died. after a few frustrating tries, i noticed that the AC adapter light would blink on and off, like it wasnt supplying power to my laptop. and because my laptop no longer has a battery, it dies. i tried to plug the adapter to another socket because i thought it was a grounded socket issue, but the same thing happens. a friend of mine suggested that it may be the radeon video card that i had got somehow fried or overheated or something, so we tried uninstalling it(yes, there was a time it stayed on long enough for me to log in and uninstall my video card). sometimes it would take 5 seconds for the AC adapter light to blink and die, sometimes it takes 5 minutes or so. after uninstalling my video card, the same thing still happens. when i turn it on, sometimes it only takes a couple of seconds before it dies. sometimes, even if i dont turn it on, the AC adapter light would go on and off, like there was something disrupting the flow of electricity from my socket to my AC adapter to my laptop that causes the light to blink on and off very fast. could it be a power supply issue?

Hi. Often, not always, when I plug in a USB device to one of the external USB ports on my desktop, my (already plugged in, and working) USB wireless adapter stops working. I lose my wireless Internet connection, and I have to reset it - either manually by unplugging it and re-inserting it, or via Windows' troubleshooting wizard. Is there either a way to stop this from happening completely (preferred, of course), or is there at least a quicker way of resetting it - like a quick program on the desktop I can run - I can even code it in Visual Studio (2013) if needed). I'm assuming that the USB ports are somehow shared and conflicting? FWIW, I have 6 USB ports on the back of the machine, plus a single one on the front access panel. Win 7 Ultimate x86, 3 Gig, no errors/conflicts under Device Manager\USB controllers. Any help is appreciated. Further info upon request....

A:Wireless adapter needs resetting when I plug in a USB device

Hello JDGiants. Welcome to the forum.

Does this behavior happen no matter what port you plug the USB stick into? Even the one on the front access panel?

If this were a power problem then it would make sense that it occurs when two or more devices are drawing power from one USB controller on the motherboard.
USB2.0 can have up to 4 ports on one controller, so I'm guessing that at least 2 ports in the back are on a separate controller. By trying the wireless device in all the different ports you may be able to come up with a pattern.

You might also try experimenting with the keyboard and mouse disconnected. Report back what you find.

Hi
We recently purchased 4 Optiplex 7050 Mini Towers and 4 QLogic 57810 Dual Port 10Gb Direct Attach/SFP+ adapters. After I installed the Qlogic network adapter to the PCI-E x16 slot, POST failed when power on. The power light flash in yellow but no video output. I tried to use other PCI-E 8X card but the same result. A PCI-E 4x data acquisition card works find in both PCI-E slots (16x and 4x).
It seems the system considered the net network adapter as video card and thus no video output from build-in video card. Also, failed to check and init hardware.
Please correct me if I am wrong and could you advise any possible solutions such changing BIOS setup?
Many thanks

A:POST failed when plug in PCI-E 8X network adapter

Try this, with that card removed from x16 slot, reboot and immediately press F2 to open BIOS setup.
Look for the Primary Display option and make sure it's set it to Intel HD Graphics, not to AUTO. Save the change and exit setup. Allow PC to boot and confirm that the onboard video is working. Then power off, unplug, and press/hold power button for ~15 sec. Now install that card in the x16 slot. Close up and reboot.
If that works, keep in mind that every time BIOS is reset to the defaults, eg to clear an error when the motherboard battery is removed,  you'll have to remove the add-in card, change the Primary Display option again...
If that doesn't work, you're probably out of luck using that card in the x16 slot.

Hi there, I just happened to stumble upon this site (thanks to Google ). It seems that this problem with the DC adapter jack is quite common on these computers which puzzles me when I try to figure out why HP doesn't have the XC1000 cable no longer available. I have a zv5000 series notebook and although it's done it's work, it is still quite reliable for the kids. If I knew about the XC 1000 cable 2 years ago when the problem started, I would have bought one in a hurry. The problem initially wasn't a broken solder connection, it was due to the jack being 'tapered', so I made a 'paper thin' sleeve to go over the adapter end so it would prevent it from touching the plastic tip (at least it lasted for a while - 2 years).
Can anyone out there please let me know where I can obtain a XC1000 cable or dock for this computer?
Thanks in advance!

A:HP pavillion zv5000 - bad DC adapter jack

Try Ebay. The problem with laptops is the fact that the metal/plastic connector that is around the power input gets shaved, bent, or broken. Your situation seems to be the shaved. The contacts arent touching fully and is not able to provide the correct ammount of power to the laptop. This could be either INSIDE the jack, or INSIDE the power adapters port. If it is the port, you should be fine going to walmart and picking up a universal power adapter for about 20 dollars. If it is the Laptops port, then you need to go to a radioshack or possibly order it from the manufacturer to re-solder on. Let us know what you can observe.

I have been searching for a right angle adapter for the DC power plug.  The male plug diameter is 4.5 mm (0.178 inch diameter).  The existing male plug is straight and the cord receives much stress at that point because the female receptacle is located on the side of the laptop rather than the back.  A right angle adapter will relieve that stress.  There are many right angle adapters available but I have been unable to find any of the correct size needed, which is much smaller on this  laptop.  Looking for a source!

I did that to myself once when I carelessly put the power supply too near the wireless adapter.

If your power supply is not within inches of the adapter, and not in the direct path between router and adapter's antenna I'd guess you have a serious problem with the power supply or with the overall wiring in your house. Try plugging into the same outlet as the router.

I just purchased an adapter plug that allows me to connect my Lenovo/IBM thinkpad (T420) to my HDTV by plugging the HDMI cord into my TV and the other end to this adapter plug which converts the HDMI cable into a male plug which fits into my display port (there is no HDMI port on this model computer). It worked, but now I can't remove the adapter plug...it's stuck in the laptop display port. I do not know if the problem is caused by the male adapter plug or the female jack in the computer, but they're locked together now.

I have previously read review comments (on these HDMI/display port adapter plugs) mentioning this jamming happening on more than a couple occasions, but I don't recall any resolutions being mentioned except to break off (and destroy) the plug and possibly damage the display port as well. I called Lenovo tech support but they said I'd have to mail the computer to them to get it fixed. I'd prefer avoiding that if possible even though my warranty is still in effect and it would be of no cost to me.....just time lost without a computer.

I'd greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who may be aware of how to resolve this problem (and also how to avoid it happening again) without doing damage to either the plug or especially the computer display port.

Thanks for your consideration in any case....

Battery not charging in my Inspiron 5748 - Intel [email protected] / 8GB RAM / 1TB disk / two years old. I've replaced charger and battery but problem persists. I've seen posts about other laptops and wonder if this could be a problem with the connector/socket (between adapter and laptop), and if I could replace that? Also, the problem seems to have started when we upgraded from Win8.1 to Win10; could that be an issue?

Hey, so I have a problem and although i'm terrible at describing computer problems I'll give it my best shot. So one day I turn on my HP Pavilion dv6000 with Windows Vista x64 Ultimate and the internet would not work and it had been the previous day. The wireless connection switch is turned on and the light is blue, not orange, but my computer will not detect any networks. My little brother has an HP desktop with the same OS but he is not having problems connecting or finding the network so the problem is obviously internal to my computer. WHen i diagnose and repair it...i get the message: "plug a cable into the network adapter "Local Area Connection"." Again my connection is wireless and i have no idea how to fix this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Linksys WRT54g Wireless router with a Linksys 5 port workgroup switch on my end so that I can operate three computers at my desk.

There IS an ethernet line plugged into the ethernet port on my new windows vista PC. I run primarily windows xp but got stuck with vista on this new beast because they wouldn't sell the package without it. My only copy of xp is for dell so I can't install it on an eMachines. I won't run windows 2k on this one because it won't run some of the programs I use.

So the network is composed of mostly xp and one or 2 windows 2k computers... there are a LOT of computers on this LAN.

All I want is to get this stinking POS connected again. and by again I mean I was playing world of warcraft on it less than 10 hours ago. It worked GREAT.

If somebody could tell me what this CRAP operating system just did to 'FORGET' how to connect to my network I would really appreciate it.

I restarted the computer and it ate itself. I'm having to do a clean install 12 hours after getting it set up in the first place.
