Graphics card upgrade help

Q: Graphics card upgrade help

Hello!
I recently tried to update my graphics card and was met with disastrous results. Can you tell me if my machine "should" have let me upgrade to the following card with no issues?
My MachineDell XPS 8700 X8700-3312BLK Desktop (Windows 7 Professional,Memory 16GB (Upgraded to 32) Dual Channel DDR3 1600MHz - 4 DIMMsVideo Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745 4GB DDR3
Upgraded Card to: MSI GAMING RX 480 GDD R5 8GB
What HappenedEvery time I tried to load my game (World of Warcraft) my machine would reboot. When I tried to load the MSI software it made the screen have boxes all over it then it did a reboot. Finally I got the blue screen. Put my old card back on. I also had to use the special connector for it which I did. It wouldn't start at all without that.
Thanks!
Nancy

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I haven't seen anyone with an RX 480 in an 8700.
I would try DDU www DOT guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html
to remove all traces of previous graphics card drivers.
I don't know if BIOS matters on the AMD cards. recent nVidia cards need BIOS A10 for Win7/8 and A11 for Win10

Hi everyone....

Current PC specs listed above ..... to get it out of the way I am a gamer......

This upgrade is to allow me to play some of the newer games such as The Witcher and also to enable me to utilize DX10 when I eventually upgrade to Vista.

RAM.....this is what I have found...I do not overclock and I am very happy with the matched pair of Corasir XMS 512MB 5400C4 running at 533 that I currently have so I figured the safe bet is in just jumping to a matched pair of 1MB sticks of the same.....
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145015

Graphics card.....

I do have a budget and from the reviews I have read this card should carry me through the gaming world for at least the next year (hopefully 2) I like eVGA and I have nothing but good things to say about the eVGA 6800GS that I am currently using.

But if anyone has some input as to problems with the card listed below or if you know of another card that will perform just as well (or better) for around the same price I would like to hear about it.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130317

Thanks in advance for any help.......

So I have a Sapphire Radeon R9 280x, and I just bought a MSI GeForce GTX 970. I also have a 500W CoolerMaster powersupply, would I need to upgrade this to 600-750W?

+note: I also bought two sticks of HyperX 16GB RAM and a Corsair H75 Hydro Series CPU Cooler.

A:Upgrade graphics card=upgrade powersupply?

Your 500 watt PSU meets the minimum requirement.... GeForce GTX 970 | Specifications | GeForce

So with that in mind....I'd say yes to a new PSU.

Hi,
My system came with a R9 270 which I want to replace with a Sapphire Dual X R9 R280x.
That card needs a 6pin and an 8pin connection and the manufacturer's site say a 500W PSU is advised.
So, I'm concerned that I get a new PSU that fits my case, has the right connectors for all the 8700 components, and is say north of 600W.
Could anyone point me in the right direction.
My system info is......
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz, 3601 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
RAM 24GB

I'm looking to upgrade my PC for higher performance in games. Currently I play games such as Starcraft 2, Mafia 2, World of Warcraft, Left 4 Dead 2. I might buy the new Call of Duty when it's released as well and play that.

These are my current specs:
CPU: AMD ATHLON II X4 620 2.6GHZ
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-M720-US3
Memory: CORSAIR DDR2 XMS2 PC6400 1024 MB x4
Graphics Card: ATi Radeon HD3850 512 mb
PSU: Zalman ZM600-HP, 600w

I'm thinking the graphics card is currently the weak link in my system and what I should look into upgrading, is this a correct assumption?

The card I have been looking at buying is XFX ATI Radeon 5850 1024MB HD-585X-ZNFA XFX ATI Radeon 5850 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
It looks to me like it would be a good upgrade and the price tag fit my budget very well.
Any comments/suggestions on this? Would this be a good idea or should I look into upgrading something else instead? Also, will my PSU be enough with that graphics card?

Thanks in advance!

Eventhough I am a die-hard NVIDIA fan there is no denying th raw power of this card. EVGA is also top of the line and have had ZERO issues from them

It is at 320 after mail in rebate and a lifetime limited warranty

Hello! I have recently purchased an HP Pavilion 550-222ur and found out that the default graphics card (GeForce GT 730) is underperforming in most games. So I  want to get a more powerful one (was thinking GeForce GTX 750 Ti or Asus GeForce GTX 950 mini). While researching the upgrade possibility, I found out that some graphics cards fail to function on HP-branded PCs due to some BIOS issue. So the question is: will the graphics cards mentioned in this post work? And if those cards are compatible, I will have to get a better PSU as well, right? Thanks in advance. Providing specifications of my PC for reference purposes: http://support.hp.com/gb-en/product/HP-Pavilion-550-200-Desktop-PC-series/9259612/model/9764558/docu...

A:Graphics card upgrade

GeForce GTX 750 Ti or Asus GeForce GTX 950 mini are not viable for your specific desktop PC. The internal 180W PSU, as shown in the specs that you graciously provided a link to,  is a definite showstopper. Your PC is, unfortunately, not what one would call a good upgrade candidate as HP did not state which case format it has. I will ask HP about it.

Hi all

I've just decided to upgrade my desktop, which has 64bit capability/hardware, to win7 64 bit. It's part of me investing a small amount of cash in my desktop to make it really strong for another year or so before I retire it (hand it over to my Mom, haha) and upgrade to a strong laptop.

My question is: I have an NVidea 64bit board and an ASUS cpu--should I get an NVidea graphics card, or another brand will be just as good? Thanks.

Well, first off, there are only two companies that make CPU's, thats AMD and Intel. You probably have a Asus motherboard. Now, for you're question, you need to know if you have a 16x PCI-e port in your motherboard for a card, and, you need to tell us what you wanna do with the card.

If you play games, you need a good one. For HD video, it can be not that good, and for just browsing you dont really need one. If you wanna upgrade just for the show, go ahead, even if it wont do anything crucial.

Anyways, There are two companies that design Grahpics cards, thats Nvidia and ATI. These day's ATI has the most powerful cards, but for the more normal cards, either company is cool.
Hope this helps, Coolnes

Two of the main reasons I wanted a High end hardware PC is for gaming and music production. With gaming there is a small issue, I noticed that my graphics card is really not that powerful and have to constantly run on minimum graphics in the games's settings.  Hardware Information:Processor- Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz 2.90 GHzRAM- 12.0GB (11.9 GB useable)Graphics- Intel(R) HD Graphics 620 (1.00GB adapter RAM) Since this a newer laptop im sure I can upgrade the graphics driver, also if I can upgrade, ive been looking into nvidia GeForce drivers. Which one would fit in to the laptop, or if there is a specific type of graphics driver I must use for this laptop.                                                                                                                      Thank You for your time.

A:May I upgrade my graphics card?

Hi, It is a CTO (Configure To Order) machine therefore I can't find its real specs but from your information it only has Graphics- Intel(R) HD Graphics 620 (1.00GB adapter RAM) therefore the short answer is no you can't upgrade its video card. Actually it does not video card to upgrade because Intel(R) HD Graphics 620 is integrated to the CPU and motherboard. Regards.

Hi: There are no removable or upgradable graphics cards in your notebook. The nvidia GT940m GPU is integrated into the motherboard and the only way to upgrade the graphics would be to replace the entire motherboard with one listed in the service manual for your model notebook that may have better graphics. This would be a very costly and labor intensive project. Better to sell your notebook and get one with the graphics solution you want.

I am currently using a GeForce MX/MX 400 graphics card. Forgive me if the answer is obvious, as I am a bit illiterate when it comes to computers, but should I upgrade to something better? And if so, how do I know if a better graphics card is compatiable with my system or not?? I hope this isn't a hard question to answer... cause if I have to upgrade half a dozen things on my computer BEFORE I can even get a new graphics card... well, I really can't afford that, lol.

I am into PC gaming, and games seem to be needing higher minimum requirements all the time, which is why I am considering the upgrade. The graphics card I'm using now had a driver issue, where I have to use 56.73 to play Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, but that driver won't let me play City of Heroes. I have to upgrade the driver to 66.93 to play that game, but then the Vampire game has horrible graphic issues suddenly, so I have to rollback to 56.73 again JUST TO PLAY THE NEWER OF THE TWO GAMES!

I figure that maybe an upgrade would fix all this, and probably wouldn't hurt anyway since newer games will probably require me to upgrade later on anyway.

If anyone could shed some light on my situation, I'd appreciate it, thanks.

Although my computer is less than a year old, I think it's time to upgrade some of its parts. Mainly speaking the RAM chips, and video card, all in the name of improving gaming experience. (Half life 2 on full power requires one helluva beast of a machine to run flawlessly).

I've got a Toshiba Satellite A75 (not sure on the other 4 numbers, but I will find them) dual 3.06 Ghz P4's, ATi Mobility Radeon 9100 IGP AGP internal DAC (400Mhz) (128Mb) I think 512MB RAM, but on the system info screen it says I've got 384mb RAM. 60 (56)GB hard drive. Matshita DVD-ram RW. My screen can run up to the 1280x800x60hz setting, which it's on normally, and sometimes reduced for games. Anything else I left out, let me know.

I think I've found the RAM chip that I want, the Kingston 1GB DDR SODIMM . It's the most RAM I can cram into this Toshiba, or at least the most that is listed as per Toshiba's website. A member an another board recommended THIS. It looks like the same product and has the saem specs, anyone think it's different or see and conflictions? I think this needs to be upped as sometimes during HL2DM, I get a blue screen of death saying that a memory dump is being performed, and I have to restart.

I was hoping to stick with ATi as the current chip I have now has been good to me, and HL2 seems to run a little better on an ATi chip.

I can't really find another Mobility Radeon chip for sale, even though ATi has them listed on their si... Read more

I would like to upgrade my grahpics card to support 3 monitors, what cards can I purchase?

A:Graphics card upgrade

Lettng me know what kind of budget you have for the upgrade would be a plus. You will need a card that supports legacy BIOS.Sapphiretechnology makes cards that support legacy and EFI BIOS.A card such as the Sapphire Radeon Dual-X R7 2G D5 would work.  A Sapphire Tri-X Radeon R9 390X 8G will as well. There are others, but the card  you select as a candidate has to have legacy BIOS support . A card with only EFI support will not boot with your motherboard.  GeForce GTX 10xx series cards have only EFI BIOS support. You will also need to upgrade your ATX PSU to one with 400W or more capacity and PCIe power connectors. I suggest usng a modular style PSU, perhaps a Corsair Builder PSU like the one in the link at NewEgg.com

The motherboard is FOXCONN A74ML-K. What are some good, but rather cheap graphics cards as well as a processor which will fit my motherboard, both for the price of 120 combined? I would like to use this computer for light gaming, i dont expect ultra settings on every game, just want them to be playable. And can this motherboard work with any processor and graphics cards?

As the title says, I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card. I have a Sparkle 9500 gt right now so I really am looking to the upgrade of my card so I can play all the newest games I have on max settings (or at least very close to) with good frame rate (Crysis, Oblivion, Dragon Age, MW2, Metro 2033, ect.). So I am looking to buy into a higher range model around the 250 - 350 dollar price range (maybe a bit higher if necessary). Below is a list of my system specs which I hope you find useful.

1. Motherboard- XFX nForce 680i LT SLI Motherboard
2. Graphic interface - 2 PCI Express X16 Slots
3. Memory - 4 gigs of Kingston 667mhz pc5300 ddr2
4. CPU - Intel core 2 quad q6700
5. CPU Speed - 2.66 ghz
6. Power Supply Make/Model - Ultra LSP 650w
7. Watt output/Amperage -- 650w
8. Country -- USA
9. If it helps I have a 22" Acer Widescreen monitor

Originally I was thinking about switching to ATI but heard that if I do that I would have to invest in a new motherboard because mine looks like it can't use crossfire. Even though right now I'm only really interested in buying one card but in the future I will probably buy a second card if necessary. I heard that ATI's drivers don't work to well with Nvidia stuff so I'm kinda under the impression that even one card might crash a lot. Also, I was looking at the Nvidia GTX 200 card series to purchase but I am wondering if they are even worth the money that they are being sold at (GTX 285?) or if... Read more

Just off the bat, I took a look to see what they have at www.tigerdirect.com. Click on Video Cards on the left side menu column, then select the submenu AGP cards. There are 40 cards to choose from. You'll have fun looking at the selection. Check to see that it is compatible with your processor. I would also see what kind of selection they have at www.directron.com. Those are my favorite two online stores for getting computer parts.

I am a noob at upgrading and installing parts in computers. I bought a gaming computer from amazon and it has been running quite well so far, but I intend on upgrading the graphics card. Maybe paying some-one to do it for me, as I have no knowledge what so ever on how to install/remove a graphics card.
Current PC Specs that I know of:
Processor: AMD Quad Core 4130.
Graphics Card: ATI HD 5450.
Power Supply: According to the Seller. 110v, 500 watts.
As you can see I do not know much about my computer. But here is a link to the product that I bought from Amazon: http://amzn.to/1kaSsXv
------------------
I play games like: COD: Ghosts, COD 4: Modern Warfare, GTA V [When and IF it comes out on PC], Garrys Mod, WoW, Portal 2 and other high end graphics games. - Overall, I need a recommendation on what graphics card to buy, and would it both run and fit in my computer. [I live in the UK and my budget is aprox. 150]. Sorry if I have either posted this in the wrong thread, or if I am not giving enough information. Please inform me if you require more info.

EDIT!: I found some information about my computer from the amazon link, here is some Product Details:
Processor Brand: AMD
Processor Type: AMD BULLDOZER [4130 Quad Core]
Processor Speed: 3.9 GHz
Processor Socket: SocketAM3
Processor Count: 4 Memory
RAM Size: 8000 MB
Computer Memory Type: DDR3 SDRAM Hard Drive
Hard Drive Size: 1000 GB
Hard Drive Interface: Serial ATA
Additional Drives: DVD+-RW Graphics

With that budget and 500 watts, you should not be too limited in your purchases. One thing you need to check is if your Power Supply has a set of 6 pin connectors or 8 pin connectors because sometimes on the pre-bought machines they do not have too many.

Here is what I would recommend if you have at least 2 6 Pins available:

Highest
R9 280 175
or
R9 270X 140

Those would both be excellent cards with the 280 being the best and the 270X being right below it in terms of performance. Both would be a huge step up from an HD 5450.

I was recently thinking about upgrading my GPU from a gtx 745 to a gtx 1060, more specifically this one.Can anyone tell me if it will work with my pc, or do i have to choose a different one/even buy a new PSU?

A:Graphics card upgrade

HI. It has a PCI Express x16 slot for graphics cards.Any card that needs that connection slot, should work for you ya sea 2.0 o 3.0,una cosa a tener en cuenta es la frecuencia a la hora de trabajar en MHz.-There may be incompatibilities between motherboards and graphics cards but by features should work, which, I recommend that where you buy that allow you to return it in case it does not work.-There is no list of compatible graphics cards since you can not try them all because of the number of cards in the market. The steps to follow and that work at the time of placing it are:1) If you already had the new graphic installed ... uninstall it again, reinstall the original.2) Restart the machine by pressing f103) Once in the bios you must deactivate "boot safe", which is inscribed in the security tab. Next you must activate "inherited mode", save changes and turn off the machine.4) Install new graphics card.5) Start the machine and with a bit of luck is everything. Regards.

I'm a graphic artist using my fiance's computer HP All In One 20-d034. My question is I'm a member of Adobe CC and run the latest versions of Photoshop & Illustrator mainly. I'm unable to use the 3D functions of these programs due to OpenGL issues. Can I upgrade the graphics card? The drivers installed are the best that I can get for the factory installed card.

how noticeable will it be if I upgrade from my GeForce FX5200 to a
XFX GeForce 4 FX5600 Ultra 128MB TV DVI VIVO. Any problems/conflicts with my currents set up? I only own one game (Call of Duty) and I'm rather unimpressed with my card's ability to keep up.

Hey,So I'm new to the PC gaming experience, coming over from console. I've had this PC for a while, and I've wanted to get into gaming, but my PC just can't handle any games, having integrated graphics. So ive looked around for a ~cheap~ graphics card that I could potentially shove in. I've looked around, and found that the GTX 1050ti is fairly good band for buck, and wondered if it would work / fit into my system.I understand that I will probably have to upgrade the power supply, and if so could you guide me on that as well.If it is at all possible, a guide to doing so would ~really~ be appreciated. Thanks
