Thinkpad Twist s230U no internal display, works on...

Q: Thinkpad Twist s230U no internal display, works on...

Hi, My Thinkpad Twist does not display anything when turned on except on external monitors. The Device manager shows a greyed out internal display icon, says it is not connected. 1. Could this be the power connect ribbon cable p/n DC002C003W00 have a fractured wire(s)? I have tested for open circuit between PWR1 and PWR2 connectors and there are 4 sequential pins which are open circuit. Is this normal? 2. The touch screen works 3. There appears to be absolutely no LED backlighting working 4. Is there a possible fix for this and if so is it the power cables or some physical problem with the ribbon cables OR is it definitely a new display that is needed using existing cables? Thanks in advance Andrew

Preferred Solution: Thinkpad Twist s230U no internal display, works on...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Thinkpad Twist s230U no internal display, works on...

The last 4 pins on the connector are unused I have determined so it is not the power ribbon cable connector. I found two wires fractured in the LCD ribbon cable right at the point where it feeds through the twist mount. I expect this could be a common problem after use. After repairing these two wires it did not fix the screen problem. I have ordered a replacement LDVS ribbon cable and will report back once I have replaced that.

I have a ThinkPad S230u with a possible monitor problem.  It has Windows 8 pro and while logged in if you wiggle or twist the monitor it switches between the Start screen and Desktop screen.  Or if you are carrying it around, it might happen.  Touch screen works just fine.  I've updated the drivers and rebooted but it is still happening.  Not sure where the issue is and taking it apart to look for physical issues is not the best option.  Best ideas for a resolve would be greatly appreciated! Thank you,ITproJim

I have an older s230u Thinkpad Twist that I barely use anymore because it has become abysmally slow.  I just want something lightweight to take to work with me other than my 17.3 inch Alienware beast that always gets wicked stares, and weighs over 20lbs in the backpack with the PSU.   A couple years ago I freshly installed Windows 10 removing all previous partitions, installations etc.  In the past I have always been **bleep** about imaging new PCs with Acronis, but some reason I cannot find the original image on my dozens of external HDDs I have laying around.   I have multiple questions regarding this: FIrst, the 24gb inlcluded ssd - Since I did a bare windows installation on the main drive, with no original drivers/bloatware left in the laptop, is this drive even functioning anymore? How do I know?  How does it even work? (I am not very savvy on the whole "hybrid" thing)  Microcenter has a 256GB mSATA drive for $70, if I put this in, will it even do anything, and how do I get it to function?  I would just assume store/run my entire system on this drive if it were possible.  I see it  in the disk management when I open it up, but no idea how it is actually working, if it is even working.   I have been able to take the laptop apart enough to find the HDD/SSD slot and the mSATA slot, so the harware installation is not a problem for me.   Would I be better off replacing the main mechanical HDD... My HDD died suddenly a few weeks ago and took everything with it..Before that I had successfully updated from the original Win8 to 8.1 and later to Windows 10, never losing any functionality. With the new hard drive I now have performed the 3rd clean install, including one off the recovery files in the computer (was not aware of that funtion at first), with both 32-bit and 64-bit varieties, but I have been left every time without the touch-screen functionality of the system. The Device Mgr simply does not show any trace of a "HID compliant touch screen", neither hidden nor in the open.=> What drivers do I need to download (from where?) and install, to get the OS to "see" the hardware?I have tried the "System Interface Foundation" install, but without any visible success. Thank you

Hey all, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Twist s230u with a 24GB SSD and 320GB HDD. Recently my pc had boot repair problems, and I had to reinstall windows 10. Thinking that this was the original location, I reinstalled windows 10 on the 24GB SSD using diskpart commands to reformat the SSD to ntfs, and removed the original windows 10 from the HDD. I also reformatted both hard drives as part of a clean install. Now I've done some research and found out that the 24GB SSD isn't meant to be used as a boot drive for windows 10 and is instead meant to be used as an SSD cache. After looking up how to perform SSD caching, I found that Lenovo used ExpressCache as the software to cache the SSD; however, it seems that the software doesn't provide support to this laptop in windows 10, only on windows 8.1. So my question therefore is, is there any other way for me to use this 24GB SSD as a cache? or perhaps ExpressCache software still works even though Lenovo Twist isn't included in the windows 10 version? Also, if I ended up just keeping the OS in the 24 GB SSD and using as a boot drive what would happen? Or am I SOL with this 24GB SSD?Thanks,

Hi there guys! First of all, it's my first time to post something here. Just recently purchased a Thinkpad Twist. However, after a few days, all of a sudden, I always get the error 2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HD). I'm not sure what exactly is the problem though because after a few minutes, when I restart, it'll load Windows 8 back and eventually after a few browsing and use of computer, will force restart stating there's a problem encountered, etc. Once it restarts, it gives the same 2100 error again. Please help me guys as I'm really frustrated. I can't seem to use the computer normally without force restart due to error and loading windows 8 thereafter due to 2100 error.

There is nothing on the Internet that I found to document the exact process to remove and replace the internal battery on the Twist. So, wen the battery died on my Twist I video taped ow I did it. Hello! I am troubleshooting a s230u/Twist and and having some issues getting it to POST. At the moment there is not a keyboard or a battery connected to it as I was trying to narrow down a couple of issues. When I plug in the AC to the machine I get the green light. I can press the power button on the monitor and the fan will spin for 2-3 seconds and then stop spinning. I get no display on the monitor but the power light remains on as well as the red light above the Lenovo logo. I habe tried connecting an external display as well but nothing will appear on that either. I also get no beeps from the speakers.  I have tried holding in the reset button at the bottom of the laptop for 2-3 seconds and releasing it but it doesn't seem to have any effect.  Does anyone else have any ideas? I am comfortable handling most repairs on machines but am just not familiar with Lenovo specifically.  Is it required to have a battery/keyboard plugged into the machine for it to POST? Is there anything other than AC Power and the monitor required to be plugged in for the system to POST?  Thanks!

Hi All, I have a 2 year old Lenovo 230u Twist. It was working fine and.then next day it does not boot. When I say it does not boot, I mean, nothing comes up on the screen. The screen remains black. When I press the power button, I hear the fan kick in for about 1.5 seconds and then stop. The red power dot glows above the i in Thinkpad so I know it is on. The machine stays on and you can feel it get warm. It just seems to never get past the initial power on and never makes it to the bios. Again. the screen stays black with nothing displayed on it at all. I am afraid it is the motherboard but before I even think about dropping that much money for repair, I want to be sure What I have tried that does not work for me:1. Plugged in the adapter and see the green indicator glow. keep it plugged in for awhile and try to power on and get same behavior2. Hit the reset button for 1-2 seconds on the bottom of the laptop and press the power button. Same behavior.3. Remove the harddrive and tried powering on, get the same behavior as described. To me this proves that it is not even geting to the bios4. Carefully disassembled/disconnected everything down to the motherboard/systemboard and them reseated everything. Pressed power button and same behavior5. Powered on and let it sit for a hour. Still same behavior (except bottom gets pretty warm)6. Go into the device manager and uninstall the screen, then reboot the computer and let windows reinstall it. You may have to reinstall the software package for the screen after windows is done reinstalling the driver.http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS035344

I have a Lenovo Twist s230u, and after installing Linux Mint 17.3 I have experienced issues with the touchpad. TouchPad works fine in a warm boot (Restarting after OS loads), but in a cold boot the touchpad is non-functional.It's not just me, others have also reported the same problems after updating to the recent BIOS updates.http://www.linlap.com/lenovo_thinkpad_twist I am currently on BIOS version 1.71 and versions 1.52 and below do not cause the touchpad issues on Linux. I have tried running the 1.52 Bios update utility (In Windows) and allowing rollback in the BIOS settings.I get this error message after running the 1.52 BIOS utility:BIOS image file does not match this systemThe utility process has not completed The download page for the bios updates state that it is not possible to roll back after updating to 1.71. Is there any workaround for this to be able to downgrade to 1.52? Or will there be a new update that will fix these issues on Linux? Thanks!

A:Lenovo Twist s230u downgrade bios

Hi ultimate55
The BIOS 1.71 readme does not show good news about downgrading.
It says:
Version 1.71

[Important updates]
- Fixed security vulnerability (LEN-2015-002 and other fixes).
If the UEFI BIOS has been updated to version 1.71 or higher, it is no
longer able to roll back to the version before 1.71 for security

[New functions or enhancements]

[Problem fixes]
Checking the log history of BIOS there are some Touchpad updates.
UEFI: 1.58 / ECP: 1.58
- (Fix) Fixed an issue of USB I/O memory leak which causes EFI application errors.
- (Fix) Fixed an issue of UEFI touchpad/trackpoint/keyboard/touchscreen.
UEFI: 1.55 / ECP: 1.55
- (Fix) Fixed an issue where the mouse cursor drifts in Tablet mode.
Sorry, I don't have  a solution, just some thoughts...
Maybe you can try to confirm the issue with other OSes, maybe you can boot from CD/USB other Linux versions to confirm that the error remains. Check out which other versions of Linux are afected with the changes on the BIOS if it applies and also try to find other Linux users of the same machine.
After that the only idea that cames into my mind is trying to escalate the issue with Lenovo support.

So I'm not quite sure how to phrase this as it's a super weird problem, But I'll try my best.
I'll start by saying a few things. First of all, I bought this computer in March 2013 and was SUPER excited about it. The last 2.5 years have been nothing but a neverending series of headaches. From the constant firmware issues, to my hard drive inexplicably dying after a year, to having to reformat 3 different times for various reasons, I've lost any faith I had left.
This is gonna be a long one, so many get some popcorn. Or a beer. I think I'll have one too.
So here's the issue: About two weeks ago the internet stopped working. I checked my husband's laptop and his wasn't connecting either, so I called the ISP. I was on his computer when they came out and fixed it, perfect! They couldn't even really tell me what was wrong. Then I go back to get on my twist and the internet won't work again. Says it's connected, says it has full bars, but pages either don't load or load lke molasses.
I spent all that afternoon trying to figure out what it could be, disabling hardware, uninstalling drivers, googling to the ends of the Earth. Then I realized I had just upgraded to Windows 10 so I started researching that and it looked like other people had had some trouble with Windows 10 messing with their IP addresses, and so I fiddled with that for several hours. Still nothing. So I bit the bullet and reformatted back to 8.1. Obviously I keep a Bootable... Read more

I don't have my ThinkPad S230U Twist with me right now, but I am wondering if this might be because the ExpressCache software for the mSATA SSD is still installed.  If it is still installed, try uninstalling that and seeing if it makes a difference.

It is unclear exactly when the problem began, but there was a windows 10 update, then a bios update shortly before I noticed the problem.   The touchpad behaves erratically, selecting/unselecting or inserting text, allowing  little to no control of intended tapping actions.  Pointer features seem to work fine, erratic behavior involves tapping only.  I believe the bios is the most current version, and I have updated the touchpad driver.  It is not clear to me whether there is an issue with the bios or touchpad driver installation or software, or if the touchpad has failed.  Looking for help to figure out how to resolve the issue.

Hey, I recently installed Windows 10 on the 24GB SSD on my Lenovo Twist s230u and am using the other 320GB HDD as storage. I've read elsewhere that this is a bad idea as it can mess up your computer and that the SSD should only be used as a cache. However, I have yet to run into any problems with the current setup, and the only problem I can foresee happening is not having enough space to do updates on the OS, though Windows 10 offers a workaround by sticking in a USB flash drive. Are there any other problems that could happen if I continue to use the SSD as a boot drive NOTE: The 24GB SSD is a seperate drive from the 320 HDD and not a hybrid.

My Thinkpad Yoga 15 has a problem, which may or may not be related to the BIOS update recently performed. When booting, the bootup screen only appears on an external monitor via the HDMI output. When performing the hardware tests in the BIOS, tests are done on the HDMI-connected display, the internal display does not seem to be recognized. I verified this using both Linux and Windows. It does not seem to be a hardware failure; I have been able to get the display on the internal LCD a few times, by powering down the laptop, holding the power button for about 20 seconds, then powering back on while pressing F1. The laptop will then function for a while, but loses its display after coming out of sleep. Needless to say, this is unworkable. Does anyone have any tips on how this could be fixed in a more permanent fashion or any indication to cause? BIOS does not allow me to turn off NVIDIA, or its opposite, to enable it exclusively. I also tried different drivers, from both Lenovo as well as NVIDIA and Intel, but to no avail. Any pointers appreciated.

Hi I have a s230 u that I dropped so HDD has crashed and going to replace it with another hdd (presuming cost is much less than a SSD) and don't know which make, model would work (assuming ebay is easiest to buy a replacement). How do i know what makes and models would fit/work ie just plug it into the slot. The current HDD is a Hitachi HGST HTS725050A7E630 2.5 SATA thin 500GB 7200RPM which i think is 7mm. So I could buy the exact same make and model or buy a newer one from Hitachi/other vendors. So trying to figure out which ones will work and also where to buy cheapest one (other than ebay) (and what I need to check before buying, assume 2.5 inch and SATA and any HDD should work?) Thanks Shriram

A:Thinkpad Carbon X1 Display BLANK after Update - External Monitor Works

I spent a day working on an issue and want to share to save folks time.  Bottom line, Intel Graphics Drivers WDDM 1.0, 1.1., 1.2, 1.3 automatically updated with Windows and broke the system. BIOS and Lenovo splash screen showed and safe mode worked fine showing this was not a hardware issue.  Windows began to load and the screen went black.  I connected an external monitor via HDMI, pressed power for 2 seconds to put the machine to sleep, pressed power again for 2 seconds and it woke up on the 2nd monitor. In Device Manager, the 2nd (HP w2007) monitor showed up and there was no mention of the laptop physically connected display. I reinstalled Windows 10 and all was well until the auto-update occurred and I had the same issue.I installed Windows 7 and all was well until I installed all updates, same issue. I didn't think this was a display adapter problem because the 2nd monitor worked just fine and it was the monitor that didn't show in Device Manager.  Alas, my assumption was incorrect. After HOURS of selecting which Windows 7 updates to install, nearly 180, I finally narrowed it down.  I thought it was a Windows problem, turns out this was an Intel Graphics driver issue. SOLUTION: I used Revo Uninstaller to remove the Intel Graphics driver program and the system recovers.  Sadly, in both Windows 10 and WIndows 7, the auto updates would put the drivers back and the same problem recurred.  I was finall... I ordered a larger 1TB model with similar specs from the manufacturer but it is physically too thick to fit in the slot (I've kept it as an external HD with an adapter cable). Without access to the HD the system defaults to the default 28gb SSD to boot and works very well except for the small size. I'm using a 32GB SD camera-card in the card slot for temporary storage along with a 1TB external. I would like to replace the SSD with either a 128 or 240gb SSD but need to know if it will fit in the same space. Are SSD drives the same size? Will this work?

So I've had my Twist for a few months now, and I've noticed that it gets kinda hot every once in a while. So I installed the Open Hardware Monitor to monitor its temperature. Are these normal/healthy temperatures? Casual use (web browsing, word processing, watching movies) in "Power Saver" mode: 40s and 50sIntensive tasks (Matlab, Mathematica, Photoshop, Visual Studio, various games) in "High Performance" mode: up to the 90s Should I be concerned at all?

A:Thinkpad Twist heating issues

Hi AmarD,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I?m sorry to hear that your Lenovo ThinkPad Twist is overheating at times.
If your laptop feels hot and shows any of the problems below, chances are its overheating or getting there:

Fan constantly running and making loud whirring noises
Computer struggling to perform basic tasks like opening a new browser window
Mysterious error messages popping up in random programs
Lines on your laptop screen (a sign your video card is overheating)
System freezing or the dreaded BSOD (blue screen of death)
The laptop abruptly shuts down on its own

Optimal operating temperature is 50 Celsius (122 Fahrenheit) or below during normal operation of the device. 90 Celsius is an inacceptable temperature value even in case of high intensive tasks.
Use dust remover spray to clean out of the laptop's vents. Dust can accumulate in and block the laptop's fan vents Start using compatible cooling pads which will help in the flow of cool air into the underside vents of the laptop. Keep your working environment or computer room as comfortably cool as possible.
If the machine is still overheating, I strongly recommend you to contact our technical support for assistance.

I get a blue screen error right after the Windows logo, saying an error has occurred, and then UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME, the computer restarts, and the cycle repeats. I can't get into Windows at all. Any help please? Also, shift F8 is not working.

A:Lenovo ThinkPad Twist blue screen on boot

Please start with these free, bootable diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/initdiag.html
In some cases the Unmountable Boot Volume will be a symptom that the hard drive is dead/dying - so run that test first.

Hello, I just purchased a newer (est) thinkpad twist and need to fully disable the auto rotate feature on this laptop. I switch to tablet mode, hit the rotate lock, and the screen will randomly rotate. I'm running a older piece of work software that gets really buggy when the screen rotates. There must be a way to make the screen rotate strictly a manual operation? I've tried unchecking the box in the control panel, but the screen still actively rotates, again even when the rotate lock is on. Thanks in advance.

just to clarify it is the 33472GU model

After about 18 months of use, I am repeadedly receiving the following errors on my Thinkpad Twist S230U (Model #3347CTO): 2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD)Press Esc to continue. (On Startup) or   Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you. (0% complete)If you'd like to know more you can search online later for this error: CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED (Windows 8 BSOD when I am in Windows) I am periodically able to login, so on my last login I did a complete refresh ran all the disk utility options, and did a complete refresh.  I just finished installing the 150 or so updates, did another run through the disk utility applications, and it is still doing it.   Any thoughts? I'm worried that it will get to the point where it won't startup again (and it is a huge pain when I am working and it goes BSOD on me).  There was nothing installed or any physical shock to the machine that would have led to this happening when it did.

My 230u has been stuck in a loop since a recent Windows Update. The machine crashes while booting Win 8.1, reboots and crashes again during the recovery phase, then this cycle repeats. Reinstalling Windows doesn't work, as the same thing occurs during the install process, even with a 'clean' install. I've run the pre-boot Lenovo Diagnostics, and every result reads 'PASSED'. I've attempted to update the BIOS from both a bootable CD and bootable USB, and the result reads 'failed to read bios". The machine is currently a brick that passes all diagnostics. Is there any solution to this? EDIT: Current bios version is 1.70

Hello Scotty and welcome to SevenForums.

Is it possible your cat's chewed out your cords, thus damaging the Video Card?

Have a Lenovo Twist S230u which is capable of 1366x768 on the Laptop monitor.  Want to connect an external monitor that will run at 2560x1600, will this work?  Either from MiniDisplayPort (laptop) to DisplayPort, or MiniHDMI (laptop) to HDMI ?  Getting a cable converter that has Active Converter, will this achieve what I want, or is it not possible?  Thanks.
