Intranet Server

Q: Intranet Server

I have Win2k Server, IIS 5, Front Page Extensions 2002 on the Intranet server. I cannot view the page from within the network. I did not buy the domain so I am going around to every PC and putting the IP address in the HOSTS file. I can see everything through FTP but I cannot seem to view the site like a normal website. (www.intranetsite.com) Any suggestions ?

Preferred Solution: Intranet Server

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an Intranet Server with a static IP. How do I give it a name (www.mycompany.net) without having to pay $$ for it ?

A:Intranet Server

A little more information is required. Do you intend to make this server visible on the Internet, or just on your local network? If it's just on your local network, you can use the machine name, or almost anything you would like put into the HOSTS file for that IP address. For instance, I have VNC running on my STANDBY machine, i just use http://STANDBY:5801 to access it with IE. Obviously, you don't have to specify the port for a web server running on port 80, the default.

I'm doing voluenteer work in a school maintaining their network. They currently have 6 internet email accounts assigned to office staff members. I'd like to setup an intranet email server for them and give each teacher an account allowing the office staff to take advantage of email communication to the teachers and other staff. I would requre a total of about 30 accounts. Maybe if the software supports it, I would try to make them all internet accounts.

Obviously, cost is an issue here. I'm sure I can squeeze something out of them for software, but it aint gonna be in the hundreds of $$. So are there any reccommondations on email servers that might fit this bill?

Its a peer to peer network of approx 50 computers. Mostly XP Pro, some 98.

I recently Stumbled across this article when I was browsing the internet:
Build your own NAS using FreeNAS | geekyprojects.com
I was thinking about taking this to the next level. I realized that I have a couple of old computers I could do this too, but first I wanted to ask a few questions.

Here is the kinda thing I was thinking of:

Server using old computer with RAID array connects to router which all computers in house connect too.

Current computers:
Computer 1 - Hardwired to router
Laptop - Uses Wifi

Is it possible to setup an old computer to have a RAID array (which from my understanding kinda connects HDD's together using an addon to the motherboard, or something along those lines) that is hardwired into the router allowing anyone who connects to our home network to access files on the Server? Also, is it possible to create a home website, so a website is stored on the server and is then added as the homepage on whatever computer, so it shows links to different websites etc (I was thinking XAMPP). Then if we want to backup our computer when can back them up to our home server.

Can anyone think of something along those lines? Does anyone have something like that setup in their house?

A:Home Network Server Intranet?

I think want you want to do is possible, if maybe a little complicated. Tell me, this "old computer" that you want to use as a local server ... what OS is it running?

I am having a problem with connecting a secondary server on my intranet.

I have a routered system and have set a server on a secondary system.

I have set the nic of the secondary system to

The router is at

My own personal computer and server are at

I can send/receive on my server calls to ftp port 21/20

but when i route calls to my secondary system from port 22 to my secondary ip port 21 I get a connection from outside but no List.

If i try from inside the intranet, there is no problem.

My friend has tried the same thing with a different router.

I have a linksys BEFSR41 V2 and he has a Netgear FR314

Any ideas on this problem?

thanks in advance

A:Secondary server set on Intranet will not List

Am I not giving enough information.

Basically all I wish to do is have another FTP server on my intranet.

Two servers, one using normal ftp calls ie. 21/20 non pasv

and a call to port 22 to route to the port 21 of a secondary server.

The problem is finding a way for the data to be outputted from the router.
It just will not do this.

Any Ideas anyone?

Or any ideas where I can go to find some help.

A:Cant PING VPN server via internet (can on intranet)

Did you check if your router/firewall allows ping [icmp]? Usually it is disabled by default. Or is this server raw on the internet?
I am assuming when you say via the internet you are actually outside the office and connected via vpn.

So, I am looking to get ahold of an intranet messenger-like program for use in a commercial business setting. Ideally, I am looking for free (or cheap) options, but I understand that you get what you pay for. I downloaded LAN Messenger from SourceForge and I really like it, but I had some pretty big issues with it. So, let me explain some criteria and maybe someone knows of a program that meets those needs. Throw some suggestions at me!

- HIPAA-compliant security.
-- This is a medical facility and we are bound by HIPAA to safeguard PHI.

- Able to run simultaneous instances.
-- LAN Messenger is nice because it pulls Window account name, but can only be run on one user at at time. This is very inconvenient for the way we conduct our business. Multiple people may use the same computer throughout the day and have tasks running that they may need to return to, which makes logging off that user account cumbersome.

- Ideally, server-based and/or administrator access.
-- I need to be able to establish user groups, in the contact list, that are populated on all users connected. Our employees need to be able to easily see who is in what department. I also need a level of control over users, such as chat monitoring and enabling/disabling accounts. I would like to be able to ensure the program is being used for work-related purposes and that information discussed is compliant with both HIPAA and our company policies.

- A polished UI, or the ability to create themes.

I'm looking into different security options to secure a site that has a 3 IIS servers.

Currently, there are 3 IIS servers: each one has a web app that ties into other servers in the network.
right now, we're using a sub-domain that points to one of the IIS servers. when you go to this subdomain, you will be prompted to login (i used IIS Basic Authentication for this)
Once you login, you will get to a "gateway" page that will allow to click on a link for whatever app you want to use. the gateway page resides on one of the IIS servers. the authentication only protects the documents on that particular server. How can I make it so that this will also protect the other IIS servers on the same domain?
i can clarify anything thats not clear. i appreciate any suggestions.

we're not quite ready to do SSL and we don't have an Active Directory Server to use Digest Authentication.

A:Intranet Security

Only have one gateway for all of the applications that you are running. You can also password each application (might become an admin nightmare) prior to anyone accessing it. Session variables can ensure they stay connected and authenticated while they are using it. These do tend to hit performance when there are many users. I was going to suggest SSL ,but you beat me to it. There could also be some other type of encryption that could secure the transmissions if they are that critical.

I do develop web applications on this PC, so not sure it software or settings on my PC are preventing a consistent load.

What do you mean by corrupt? With any connection to the internet the possibility of being hacked and contracting a virus exists regardless of what protective software you are running. If you are attentive and keep your antivirus and firewall current you lessen the odds, but by its nature the internet is unsecure.

I want to set up a Intranet Site here at work for employees to get info forms etc. What's the best way to go about it? Should I put it on our server, or set up a PC thats not being used and has win 2000 pro on it. Or should I set up a Linux box for this propose? Could I load Internet Information Services (IIS) on a Win 2000 pro box? How do you do it? What are the pit falls?

A:Setting up a Intranet?

Ideally you would want to have the web server on a computer that is standalone like your main server, however, depending on the number of users you could cause your server to slow down. There are no serious dangers if you isolate your intranet from the internet. I'd run IIS on your server if your server can handle it otherwise I'd take that Win2k pro computer and install Linux with Apache on it.

I don't think there is a "turn off" option. The "Intranet" refers to other computers on your LAN and as such they are deemed more trustworthy than sites not on your LAN. But if these other computers are not running web or ftp servers then the IE Intranet settings won't have any affect on anything.

hello everyone,

My old laptop (see spects) will be retired this year and would want to use it as a server. it already has iis 7 installed, but how would i go about acomplishing this?

It would be ideal if i could have mac filtering so that all the "recognized pcs" at my house can avoid the intranet webpage, while other(public) pcs cant.

The public pcs would stil have internet acces, but will go to the "inranet" page first.

Hi folks,

I'd like to set up an intranet in our office. I'll have an xp box as the server running apache with php and mysql installed. There will be a database with sensitive data so I want to make sure it is secure.

Can anyone point me to a tutorial on how to secure my intranet server? I'm very new at this.

Perhaps I should add a few more details. This will be used to run a php app with access to a mysql database. It will be tiny, just the server and about 4-5 clients.

And I should also add, I don't know how to setup an intranet, much less a secure one.

I'm on Windows XP SP3 and using IE 7.0.5730.13

I'm using our company intranet, which is wrote using classic ASP and javascript. The home page of the intranet has several Iframes that use javascript to refresh the content at set intervals.

The problem is after a while the intranet just dies. You cannot refresh, clear the cache, etc, or even close the tab and open another one to reload it. You have to restart IE and load the site again, which will then continue to work. There is no set time as to when this things dies. Sometimes it can happen in minutes, other times it can go for hours or it doesn't happen at all, it seems to be a random event. All the other pages are fine, it just seems to be the home page. I'm sure it could have something to do with the constant iframes reloads, but I've searched everywhere but cannot find anything.

If you do try and refresh the screen goes blank for ages before finally returning 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage', I then run the 'Diagnose Connection Problems' amd it reports no errors???

I've had this problem for a while and was wondering if anyone else has had the same thing and a possible solution.

A:Intranet dies after a while

There could be a resource leak somewhere on the homepage. Check resources for the instance of IE you are using in task manager, and see if it increases dramatically over time.

Also, are the IFRAME content pages "huge" or relatively small?

I am designing a user-friendly interface for staff to access the server where our main directory of operational manuals and folders of documents are stored. We call it the 'Z-Drive'. The server is NT4.0 and staff workstations are XP. Currently staff gain access to the Z-Drive by using Windows Explorer.

This is actualy quite a cumbersome method of navigating as you need to click into folders inside folders inside folders to get to the desired document. Also some of the less experienced staff are accidentally dragging and dropping folders into other folders and causing a right mess of things.

To remedy these issues and to make the whole Z-Drive much more user-friendly, I am designing an html page that has links to all the folders on the Z-Drive so that staff can get to these folders with a single click. This would also allow staff to understand the structure better as an overview of the entire system can be viewed on one html page. I will set the 'Home page' of Internet Explorer to this HTML page so that when ever staff open IE they have the entire 'Z Drive' there in front of them on one page.

I am wanting to know if there are any security issue that I could be concerned about. For instance, would this in any way make the server more open and vunerable to attack form the Internet? Can the vunerabilities of IE be exploited in anyway to gain direct access to the Z-Drive by doing this? Is this method more vunerable than the current arrangement of using the sta... Read more

Considering this is purely a client-side web page with links to the directories on the server, I can't see any way this would cause security problems... but considering the users can change the directory structure on the server, I would also suggest looking into locking down the server a little - how much access do the users actually need? Do they need to be able to overwrite the files on the drive or are they just for reading only (you said it stores manuals, so the thought comes to mind you could just have the share set to read only)

not sure if this is the correct place to post this, i apologized if i posted it wrong.

ok, soon my small office of 6 users will be connected to our company network, intranet and i was told that we can excess to internet as well.

becoz of this, our usual internet application ie hotmail messenger, yahoo messenger , icq etc would not be appropriate for firewall reason. Is that true. Will there be an alternative way?

A:applications for intranet/internet

Ok, now ICQ, MSN Messenger, Yahoo, AOL Messenger etc all use different ports to communicate on. Most of these ports are kept closed by firewall software for various reasons, but mainly because they pose a security risk.

It is not known if one of the Instant Messengers has a bug in it, which might allow an outside user access to internal private documents.

You can ask your network administrators to setup their firewall to allow for programs like ICQ (ICQ Firewall setup instructions), but what they might be concerned with, is files being sent to you via ICQ, that they can not police. Now, besides the files that are not that serious (porn pictures, etc), there are more serious files like games that are Trojan viruses and install products like Back Orifice 2000. These programs can be used to view confidential files on your network.

Also, ICQ allows you to SEND confidential files out of the network.

So... you see it is understandable, from a security point of view, to see why these kind of programs pose a security risk.

The decision is up to you (or your network administrators/security advisors).
