no boot, black screen, powers itself off

Q: no boot, black screen, powers itself off

trouble started today... fan was whining so checked it and rebooted, got some bad beeps(7 then 1 long 2 short i think), rebooted again and it booted fine but fan was barely turning so powered off and bought new fan, put it in... started booting, fan started, it was checking drives and then just powered off...

took the opportunity to get new case and power supply and put everything together again... same problem

disconnected all but the motherboard... same problem

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Sounds to me that you have a short circuit that is grounding your MoBo (where it shouldn't be grounded)

make sure that you did not install any standoffs where they don't belong. remove your mobo from the case, verify that your standoffs are in the right spots for your mobo and form factor. the holes that your mobo should have mounting screws in will have a metal ring around them, if it doesn't, then dont use a mounting screw or metal standoff there (you can use a plastic standoff if you want)

before reinstalling the mobo, try "table testing" it first...boot up without mounting it in your case to verify that everything works before installing it

I recently tried to turn on my computer. It appears to power up, but there's nothing on the screen. I tried running the LCD test (power + D) and see the flashing colors so screen appears to be working.  Tried to run the POST (?) test (power + Fn) and can hear lots of beeping, but I cannot see anything on the screen. At one point early on, I must have pressed something to turn on the verbal assistance, because it was reading to me. That has stopped, though. Any suggestions for a fix?  I'm on a work trip overseas, so I'm not able to hook it up to an external monitor to see if that works.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

Here is a list of everything I have connected.

I've disconnected everything else. I even tried both sticks of memory, one at a time.

in this case i suggest reset the graphic card and make sure all connections are seated well after that if it dosent work you could fix it by swaping the Graphic card with a different one to determine if its a GC issue .

one question you see black screen ? do you even get to see the bois menu or nothing at all?

So my laptop powered on and I hear the fan and everything sounds normal, up until when the option to type in my password should appear. At first, there was no screen to type in my password. Now, there's the Windows logo, but the cursor doesn't move and there's no box to type in my password.

I tried a quick google and people suggested unplugging the adapter, taking out the battery, and pressing the ON button for 15-60 seconds. I did that and all it did was have the Windows logo pop up. I've tried booting it in safe mode, but nothing shows up.

So I tried step 3 from this page: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03518165&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en but pressing F10 didn't take me to the BIOS settings. The only option was to press enter, and it led me to options such as system restore or fixing the hardware.

Now this lets me see the screen perfectly fine, so what's going on? I can only see the screen here, but not on normal boot up or safe mode. I tried a system restore but that did not work. I'm currently in the VAIO Recovery Center and I ran a Quick Test and nothing was wrong. So I just did a "hard disk verify and repair" and it said it found something wrong but repaired it. I just restarted and still nothing, just a black screen with the Windows logo, no box to type in my password and the cursor can't move.

Do I need to get something replaced or what? Oh and this laptop is about 5 years old. If I nee... Read more

A:Laptop powers on, but screen is black

What operating system to you have? Windows 7? 8?

It sounds like the hardware is functioning, but something for Windows is corrupt. I had the exact same problem on a computer a couple of weeks ago.

I had a Windows on my flash drive, plugged it in, and choose to use startup repair to fix the problem. Ironically in my case, it said it failed, but it did fix the problem.

If you don't have a Windows disc, in your recovery settings, you should be able to choose startup repair. Sounds like upon booting the computer, you have to press enter. Not sure where to go from there on your computer. Can you provide all the options you see from that screen or see if you can find? Also, what is the make and model of your pc?

My son has a Lenovo G580 running Win 8.  He uninstalled McAfee AV which completed and indicated a reboot was required. He rebooted and Win 8 did not start.  Has a black screen.  Power lights come on and I can hear the fan running.  When powering up, there is a quick noise from the DVD drive being engaged, but then no other noise -- just the fan.

I was going to try to use a recovery disk, but he does not have one.  Can one be created using a Win 7 machine?

Help!!

Tom

A:Laptop powers up to a black screen

It's a good point about using the Windows 7 system repair disk for Windows 8. I do not know if that has been tried before or even if it is possible. Both use the BCD store for booting. But because this happened after Mcafee was uninstalled, I think it has affected more than just the boot files. I googled and found other people had the same problem of a blank screen after an uninstall.

Try the following first.

Remove the power cord and battery. Press the power button for 30 seconds. Attach the power cord but leave the battery out. Power up the computer.

Are there any files that need to be recoverd from the laptop?

Levono has a button that will start the factory reset process. It's called the NOVO button and looks like a little arrow. I am not sure where it is on your computer but if you do a factory reset, all files that were put on the computer after purchase will be deleted so do not do this until you have recovered all of your files.

Hi, I shut my laptop down last night without having a problem with it at all...ever! IT is a dell xps1530 running window's vista. This morning I booted it up and it powers on but justs sits at a black screen. No cursors are flashing, none of the F keys do anything to try to boot in safe mode...the computer just absolutely does nothing. I have tried inserting the install cd to try to boot from that and it accepted the cd and now won't spit it out. I tried taking out the battery and unplugging it and holding the on button down for 60s. that didn't help. I have reseated the hard drive and the memory. beyond that I am not much use. Any suggestions?

A:Laptop powers up but boots to a black screen

Its possible that the motherboard is failing or has failed.have it looked at so that you will know for sure the exact problem.from what i understand the xps laptops are for gaming and are known for having motherboard issues.as far as the stuck cd try to go to the cd/dvd drive itself and try to eject it or use a paperclip to try to pop open the drawer.

Hi there fellas.

I have had my comp for about 3-4 years. I have never had any problems but this week when I turned it on the screen remained black and said "no signal". Obviously there is no output from the graphics card and I have tried a second moniter which also failed. Im almost certain that this is a hardware problem.

When the PC boots up, the LED's on the flash card drives and floppy drive are permenently on. However, when the PC was working these lights would flash briefly and then go off while the boot sequence continued.

I have opened the case and turned the power on. The CPU fan and PSU fan are both spinning but the fan on the graphics card is not. The two DVD drives both work but there is still nothing on the screen.
Im not sure if the hard-drives have power because they are quite hidden.

Im am unsure of how to proceed. I thought I would seek some advice before physically taking it to a specialist.

I have a HP Compaq 6820S that all of a sudden has stopped working   It had been on unattended for a few hours, and when I came back to it it had frozen with a black screen (I had to hold the power button to turn it off).  Now, when I power it up, the fan kicks in, the caps lock LED flashes on then off, the wireless and power button LEDs stay lit, and the DVD drive continously clicks - but nothing else (screen remains black /off, no beeps, no BIOS/ POST screen). I've tried with hard disk and/or memory removed, and with/without the battery inserted - with the same result as above each time.   EDIT: have also left the battery out for 24 hours too.  When on nothing happens (caps lock/num lock keys don't light up when pressed, wireless LED doesn't go off when pressed).  I've also tried exporting to an external display, again with no luck.  I suspect the motherboard is dead, and it may be new laptop time, but wanted to check here in advance in case anyone has any other suggestions.  Can anyone suggest anything?

Hello anyone who can help!

I have a Lenovo Laptop Thinkpad Edge E520 8GB RAM, Intel CPU B960 Pentium Processor 2.2GHZ

Recently when I have powered up my laptop it occasionally doesn't load properly, the screen stays black. You can hear the laptop working fine but you cannot see anything.

This happens once or twice a week, I usually hold on the power button for 5 seconds, then reboot and it resumes my hibernate settings as usual

Could this be because I always hibernate my laptop?

Can someone please explain what might be causing this problem and how I go about fixing it?

Thanks in advance!

A:Laptop powers on but screen stays black?

Thats a fairly new laptop as i have the edge 530.ive never put any of my computers on hibernate so im not sure if that why its doing that. it sounds like either a power supply problem, a screen problem, or a harddrive problem.or rarely the motherboard.you might want to take it somewhere and have it checked out then you will know for sure and go from there.if you have an external monitor you can try and see if anything shows up on it. if so or even if the other monitor is black i would still start with the screen first as the problem.

We have an issue where some of our E431 devices will power on but the screen will remain black. If we let things sit for awhile and try to boot again it may come up just fine. There are no beep notifications during POST. When it boots fine the ThinkPad logo appears and will go on to the OS. If we restart or shutdown the computer may or may not boot. Has anyone had an issue similar to this and what did you do to correct the issue? We have tried replacing screens, mother boards, new hard drives, and swapping memory but cannot pinpoint what is causing the issue. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Can not boot Pavilion 23-b319. Powers up to a black screen with NO beep sounds. This started as an occasional non-boot symptom, but now will not boot at all.All other functions appear normal:  power supply light remains on, power button lights up, fan is constant, hard drive spins, optical drive can open and disks sound as spinning. What I have tried: Power supply brick has been tested.Hard drive has been pulled (for data recovery) and is confirmed working.CMOS has been reset, battery replaced with new. When single 8GB RAM stick is removed, I get 5 beeps, a pause and patten is repeated.  Can anyone familiar with this model  confirm if these beeps are indicating ram failure or motherboard failure? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

A:Pavilion 23-b319 Powers up to Black screen, no beeps

@q59, welcome to the forum. The first component that comes to mind when I see these symptoms is the power supply unit (PSU).  However, here is a guide that will help you troubleshoot the hardware to see if it is working properly.  Some of the diagnostics are done from UEFI so the computer doesn't have to boot. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

It did but screen was black and i could hear no sound of functionality. Searched the web for a solution and i powered laptop off, removed power cord, battery, rams and hdd. Then kept pressing the ON button for greater than 30 seconds. Reconnected everything and laptop booted windows normally. Last night it happened again and this time the same procedure doesn't seem to fix the situation. This whole things looks very bizzare, never heard of anything similar, i hope you can help! Whenever you power it on the indicator lights shine but however it seems the screen doesn't want to turn on. I've troubleshooted the computer by doing all I know. Such as removing the battery and draining the excess life in the computer, cleaning the RAM cartilages (also checked to see if it were by chance the RAM themselves), and as far as to dissembling the computer to see if the flex cables had by chance came unhooked. Everything seems to be hooked up and wired just fine. Just no screen display. The fan will turn on after several minutes of the computer idling.

Hope we can work things out!

Hi,

I have a HP ZE1210 notebook which is about 3 years old now. I replaced the motherboard and cpu.

Before replacement, the computer would not charge a battery, and when the power button was pressed, it would turn on for about 1 second, then immediately shut off.

When I first booted up the laptop after replacing the parts, it booted fine and started to load XP Pro. The computer froze on the "Loading Windows XP" part of boot, and I had to restart it.

Now, when I turn on the laptop, the CPU fan comes on, the hard drive indicator blinks, and the power stays on, but the CPU fan stops within 5 seconds, and the screen never turns on. Also, the hard drive access indicator does not light again after the first 2 seconds. It appears to do absolutely nothing, but stays on. The battery charges fine, and all the regular indicator lights seem to be working.

I am wondering what the problem may be, since the first time I booted with the new parts it seemed to work?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi. I have a old Dell Inspiron 5000 Laptop and its having some issues. First of all, during the boot process, It'll freeze up. It happens at various stages (shortly after POST, During Windows XP boot Splash screen, during XP welcome screen etc.) I've also noticed that any movement of the laptop causes it to freeze as well sometimes. Also sometimes when i try and power it on, the screen will flicker vertical lines for a few seconds and just remain a black screen. Another issue is that When i power it on, the fan inside won't even come on and then sometimes a few seconds later it will cut off and then come back on (sometimes if i tilt it a certain way). I suspect a loose connection at the motherboard maybe. I have no idea how to dismantle a laptop (Only desktops) so any help much appreciated.

NOTE: THIS IS A COPY OF MY POST ON THE COMPAQ FORUM...getting desperate.

Hi, i bought a 6150b from a company auction. Everything worked perfect for the longest time. Then last week i went to go turn it on, and all it does is run the CPU fan for a couple seconds, flash the AC LED about 7 - 8 times, and while thats flashing the power and hard drive LEDs stay solidly lit. Then it completely turns off. This all lasts about 3 seconds at the most. Thats what happens when on battery power.

When on AC power, the same thing happens, except it continues doing the cycle over and over again until I unplug it.

I think it might have something to do with the LCD monitor, since it does not even show a slight flicker at all. No color change like it would from when turned off to a black back lit screen when turning on.simply nothing.

I opened her up (no warranty anyways) and checked all the connections for the keyboard, monitor, DVD drive etc....also reseated them as well, with no luck.

Pulled the both RAM modules and reseated them as well, nothing.

Pulled the battery as well, no change. Still cycles the same over and over again while on AC

There are no audible errors codes (real nice HP...), and im lost at this point.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario 6150b wont boot - no BIOS screen - powers on and off repeatedly

I think instead of just pulling and replacing the CMOS battery you might purchase a new one and install it. Proceed from there. If you get a screen and it's still has a problem try a new PSU. Jazz

Hello,
I am having problems with direct booting into Windows 8 installed into a VHDX file.
This is a four-partition UEFI boot on a GPT drive. EFI files are residing on a second partition of disk 0 (the ESP partition) in the EFI folder. The boot virtual disk is residing on the fourth partition of that disk 0.
When I turn on the PC, it shows black screen after the BIOS POST screen. No Windows 8 boot menu, no other information is displayed. However, if I press Shift+F12 (or F12) to start Dell BIOS Boot Menu and choose Windows Boot Manager from the UEFI part of
the boot menu, Windows 8 starts to boot without difficulties.
How do I make Windows to boot automatically without having to select Windows Boot Manager in DELL BIOS boot menu?
I believe I messed up with boot sector somehow... What needs to be fixed provided that Windows 8 will boot into VHDX file?
Thank you.

I had disconnected all drives but my ssd while installing windows 7 but when i reconnected the old drive (on which there was still the 100 mb system partition) the black screen with the blinking line was back. The ssd is in sata1 and Bios sees all drives.

it would be great to be able to resolve it without reinstalling windows a third time.

thank you very much in advance.

Hello,

I have been having this problem since a week or so. Broni has helped me in malware forum to rule out malware as responsible. My machine is clean and I was refered here for further help.

Here is my problem:

At boot-time, I see windows XP load screen with the progress bar, the progress bar advances to the end and then, the screen turns pitch black and all is see is an arrow cursor I can move around. I thought until yesterday that this was a permanent freeze-up, but if I wait, say, 6 minutes, the black screen disappears and windows then starts normally.

Last week, problem was intermittent, it now happens all the time.

Windows boot-up was fine before.

Please help me.

A:Windows load screen at boot, looong black screen, then normal startup

I had this tons of times with my old XP PC. It is normal if you have a lot of files on the HDD and you have little RAM. How much RAM do you have? What is the capacity of the HDD? And do you have the Windows XP disc? Would you be willing to upgrade the RAM and/or the OS if we must resort to that? Or would you rather just buy a new PC?

Hello.

Just today, I turned on my computer and got the blue screen of death, so I restarted my PC. Then a black screen came up saying "Windows could not start beacuse the following file is missing or corrupt : \windows\system32\config\system."

You can attempt to repair this file by putting the winxp cd in etc...

Now when i turn on my computer there is just a black screen showing, with nothing at all on it.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks very much for your help.

It's a nasty error that requires some persistance and resourcefullness to overcome without a clean install.

If you have a Windows CD or have the recovery console installed, you might want to have a go at these directions.

my PSU went out and i had it replaced and since i replaced it i havent been able to boot my pc. i plug everything in and hit the power button it immediately goes to a black screen with a blinking underscore cursor in the upper left corner about 1/4 of the way from the left side. all my fans work, the hard drive is running.

Vista (64 bit)
AMD Phenom x4 9100e 1.6GHz
ATI Radeon x1950 Pro
4 Gb RAM
Power supply was from another pc i had that i didnt use anymore, same wattage just had the 6 pin PCIe connector i needed, the one currently in it is the stock one that came with the tower.

no clue what to do, F1, F2, ESC, DEL keys dont work to get to BIOS, the only responses i get are CTRL+ALT+DEL kind of restarts i think, my monitor goes to standby when i do it for a brief period of time but then fans kick on again and same black screen.

also when i hit the pause/break key it stops the beeping that is coming from the mobo. *note* if i hit the key during the beep then its continuous noise.

anyone have any advice?? any would be appreciated!!

*Edit - just to clarify, i get zero load up of anything, there is no loading screen prior to the black with blinking cursor, as soon as power is on it immediately goes to this screen.

*Edit - again i forgot to put that the 6 pin PCIe connector needed for the x1950 pro is non existant in the new PSU and i havent gotten an adaptor yet for it. dont know if that would be the reason i cant boot BIOS or windows. the original gr... Read more

sounds like you need the PCIe power connector to run your video card. Try removing the card and enabling the onboard video until you get a new PSU or adadpter.

no display on LCD from start up (no splash screen or cursor) AFTER using  Windows "restart" I do get video from HDMI port to TV After Win 8.1 boots up (visible on TV) ,if I disable intel video 4600 driver and re-enable it , I immediately get video on LCD. If I do a windows "shutdown", and after it shuts down - then press the power button, it will boot up with video on the LCD (still no splash screen, though) BUT, If I do a windows "restart", the computer will start again with no display on LCD. I have done a complete computer reset to Lenovo factory software  and have updated all display drivers and BIOS - to no effect. Have tried disconnecting the battery, unplugging bios battery, 20sec power button hold. Any other solutions out there?

Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 and today I suddenly got a blue screen error message, the main message said "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA". After rebooting, I got the same message. Then on the next reboot I couldn't get to the login screen.

I used my Dell OS Recovery CD that I created to try and repair Windows XP. It asked for a place to partition/fragment Windows, and then it went through copying files etc.

After that, I tried to restart, I got the normal Dell Boot screen but then it went to a black screen, with only a flashing cursor in the top left hand corner.

I cannot do the Ctrl Alt F11 option to recover Windows XP, I can only either choose F2 or F12 at the initial boot screen.

Please help, I really do not know what to do!

What is the blue screen error message all about? I haven't installed any software or hardware so I do not see what might of caused the problem!

Help!

Before explaining how i got here, i will explain what exactly is happening. When I boot up my computer i see the logo then text saying Preparing Automatic Repair with a loading icon. Then i would get a black screen that would sometimes show a cursor that i can use with the black screen but most times just the black screen. Eventually this black screen ca give way to Diagnosing your PC loading screen that loops endlessly

Okay this started after I downloaded the anniversary edition for Windows 10, the first time i booted up the computer i had faced the AVG Watchdog initialization bug which prevented from accessing the laptop for the few weeks as tried looking for solutions forcing me to eventually uninstall AVG through Safe mode (the only way i managed to was through turning it off and on 3 times as every other way including holding F8 had not worked). After booting up the first time without issue after removing AVG and getting some things done, I turned it off without issue then i faced this new problem which is still plaguing me. I've looked up in forums for a solution but the closest i found was just reinstalling windows and losing everything, does anyone have a solution where i can still keep my data?

A:Can't access startup screen, boot up leads to black screen

Hi Helix935 and welcome to Tenforums.

If it was less than 10 days since this happened, you might have been able to go into Settings>Recovery and rollback from the Anniversary Update. But it's been too long now.

If it's data only that you're needing to save, you could boot the system to Kyhi's rescue media and use File Explorer to copy your data over to an external drive, then perform a clean install, (or reset or refresh from within safe mode).

You will need to reinstall your personal applications after the OS is working again though.

Thanks for all providing valuable suggestions in my previous thread Win 7: Black screen on boot up, before login screen?

As I am picking the clean install option for my resolution, I am opening this new thread.

I reviewed the tutorials (Macrium) of this community. I found Macrium Reflect Free (Version: 6.0.753 (21 July 2015)) for download.

I downloaded/installed above Macrium to working PC. This version has an option to create Macrium Reflect rescue media on CD, DVD, or USB stick upon installing on working PC. I created a rescue media USB.

I created complete HDD image of my unbootable (Z580), before doing clean win 7 install. I am going to clean install Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) using my OEM KEY.

I posted the OEM DISKMAP in my previous thread Post # 90

I find System (d:\) 200 MB Windows_7 (OS) ( c:\) 653.44 GB & my Lenovo_data (e:\) 25.47 GB. Lenovo says, if I change the partition configuration, it will make built-in Lenovo recovery unusable.

I like the idea of adopting infrequent system changes (adding new programs etc) and frequent data changes (growing user documents) in image backup strategy. I mean taking system partition (d:\ + c:\) image back up as and when I add new programs and taking data partition (e:\) image backup periodically.

How do I re-structure my DISKMAP to have effective periodical image backup without disrupting built-in Lenovo recovery?

Are there any Windows 7 disk partition recommendation/guidelines?

Hello, I had a very odd incident with my computer.

Specs:
FX-6300
ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0
Ripjaws Gskill 2x4GB
Rosewill Green Series 630W
Also have a Cooler Master 212 EVO for the CPU
R9 270x Gigabyte OC Edition

So I was playing a game called Gnomoria, which to my knowledge shouldn't be very taxing on a computer... When suddenly my screen went brown with vertical lines! I could still hear the music playing but it seemed my PC was frozen. I decided to then restart the computer. As windows booted up, I got the chime that signals you were moments away from logging only to get a screen that is black. I can move the cursor but thats its... nothing else works. I then restarted my computer again with the same problem. Finally, I restarted the computer again but in safe mode with networking and I got that to work. Beyond this point I am not very experienced when it comes to computers, though I did build this rig myself. I'm just wondering what went wrong, and how can I start to fix this problem. I was not overclocking at all, at temps right before the Brown Screen looked cool with the CPU at 40C and the GPU around 35-40C. I also posted this under graphics problems mostly because this issue probably is GPU related. I'm running on 3.12, or 3.9 drivers. Im not sure which one but I am running on older ones mainly because I was having Blue Screen issues about 2 months ago which was fixed thanks to this forum. I'm just not sure where to go from here, any help would be appreciated.

A:Brown Screen and Vertical Lines - Black Screen on Boot

I forgot to mention that I did a system restore which brought it back 10 days earlier in which a version of direct X was installed. The system restore didn't work though and i was still welcomed with the black screen and only a mouse cursor. I have not changed any settings though recently.

Hello, I'll go ahead and start from the very beginning. Thanks in advance though for taking a look at my problem.

About a month ago, my computer would give me a few problems while booting up. I would start the computer, it would run through BIOS, run through the Windows loading screen, and after that it would run the CHKDSK to make sure my disks are fine. CHKDSK doesn't work, it just freezes right before checking the disks, so I restart and generally it will boot up. Most of the time it would boot up perfectly, but rarely would it go to the xp loading screen and then flicker as if it as going to go to the windows login screen but wouldn't. The screen would just stay black and I'd have to restart. Next time, generally it would work perfect.

So this brings me to the current day. After the windows xp loading screen, it goes black. The computer is on, but I don't see any activity for the HDD via the LED. SO i go into safe mode, i finally get CHKDSK to run, I had to really mess with some stuff to get that working. Windows says the volume is fine, and the only way I can boot my PC is in safe mode, but even that will freeze sometimes while loading some of the files.

Just to let you know I'm running Raid0, and this is my first time running it. I'm not sure if this symptom is a common problem if one of the disks are going out. Does anyone know whats going on? Could it be a virus that messed with a boot.ini or any startup stuff? also, is there anyw... Read more

Ok it all started when I ran Nod32 antivirus. I ran it because I had some viruses on my computer that I wanted to get rid of. After the scan there were 180 some detected objects that were quarantined or deleted. So then I restart my computer and after the windows xp logo there is just a black screen with no cursor. And after awhile the computer will just restart and try booting up again. I tried going into safe mode and safe mode with command prompt but I still get a black screen with no cursor. The last known good configuration doesn't work either. I'm pretty frustrated because I did nothing wrong. I am also having a feeling that nod32 might have quarantined some infected files that are essential for Windows Xp to boot. I also do not have any windows xp disks with me because I lost them a very long time ago. Is there anything I can do to fix my computer? Thanks.

I took out the heatsink from my fiance's computer and replaced it with a new, better heatsink and started having this problem. The computer will power on and all the fans are turning but the monitor stays in "sleep" mode it does not show anything.

One time, after the computer was on for a while the computer speaker beeped and the system booted, but after windows tried to boot the screen was all garbled and I had to restart the computer. Now it won't boot again, just a black screen.

Does anyone have any ideas?

A:Computer powers on, monitor is black

I can't possibly see why replacing the heatsink would have to do with the problem you are having - it is most likely a coincidence. Try reseating the video card. Have you changed any BIOS settings?
