Q: CNN Article on Digital River download issue

Apologies to folks who have already seen this:

Windows 7 student upgrade hell - Apple 2.0 - Fortune Brainstorm Tech

(link currently on front page of CNN)
As I posted several days ago, I am just shocked that MS didn't work with Digital River to get a solution out there ASAP...to avoid just this type of press. I really have been surprised that I didn't get an email a day or two after release day from DR or MS stating, "if you have issues, you can download the ISO from here." I mean seriously, what's the value of the ISO without a key?...and if you managed to get a cracked key, I doubt access to the install media is what is holding you back.

I am sure that this issue is DR's fault since they appear to have written the installer based on its signature...but the result is the same either way - bad press for MS and Win 7.

Anyway, just thought that I would share.

cheers,
Steve

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Ok, so I was finally able to get the main Expanded Setup file extracted.

But now I still have the 3 original files on my desktop... what do I do with them?

Also my expandedsetup file is this large:

Size: 3.01 GB (3,239,836,668 bytes)

Size on disk: 3.01 GB (3,241,648,128 bytes)

Contains: 874 files, 199 folders

But doesnt it need to be 3.02 or something? So did I download a bad version? Or do I have it all for 7 64?

I have heard lots about there being problems when people have downloaded Win 7 from Digital River as part of the student offer. Most of what I have heard is from people trying to got from 32 bit Vista/XP to 64 bit Win 7.
Are there any similar problems reported with the 32 bit win 7 download?

A:Question about Digital River Win 7 download

The biggest problem is how the download is delivered (an exe file), then expanding the file, then burning the files to a bootable ISO.... Personally, I wouldnt go through all those hoops if it were free... and apparently a lot of other people agree..

I've just registered to get a copy of windows 7 pro 64 bit when its been released from the UK student program and am wondering what format the download will be in. My friends who have got their copies using the MSDN AA have had theirs as iso files which they have been able to burn and install from there. Will the download from here be in the same format or will it be the same as the ultimate 64 bit download (3 seperate files)

It will not be in three seperate files. that was a torrented fiel. It will come in either an ISO (most likely) or a vhd (doubtful). to burn you take the ISO file and burn it to dvd using an app like IMGburn, or powerISO, etc

I purchased the student offer version of Windows 7 yesterday top up grade from XP, as for ?30 I thought I couldn't go wrong.

So there I was this morning thinking I could set a side a few hours to get it all up and running but 11 hours later i still dont even have all of the first .box file downloaded!

I live off campus (in the UK), but still have a cable broadband connection and can usually expect file download speeds of 300-800kb/s as reported by the windows download window.

Now I know that there is probably high demand on Digital River's servers at the moment, but still... My download has only managed 40-50kb/s on average with a couple of short peaks to 70-90kb/s.

At this rate it'll be tomorrow evening before I get to a point where I can install.

Anyone else having this problem, or ideas of how to speed things up? I ask as i can't find anywhere else which mentions this problem, only people talking about creating .iso files as if their download flew by and now they're installing.

Hello! While I know that this is the very first day of Windows 7 release and everything, I just wanted to see if anyone had a similar problem and had found a way to fix it.
So, I finally got Windows 7 Professional Upgrade (since I'm a student) to start downloading through my Campus' proxy and after downloading smoothly for a half an hour or so it hit 68% and paused. At first I thought nothing of it, but now when I try to click "resume" it downloads about .01-.02mb of data and then pauses again all in less than a second.
Anyone know how I might fix this? I've exited the Download Manager and started it again a couple of times, and restarted my computer and have unplugged/plugged back in my Ethernet cord.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

My download has been pausing at the 68% mark too. Maybe it will budge during off-peak downloading hours.

Yes, Digital River has official Windows ISO file downloads since that is also a Microsoft site. Of course, you would need to already have a legitimate product key to use to activate with.

A few days ago I wanted to download Windows 7 Profesional 32 bit iso from Digital River. It started to download and then it stopped to download at 10.9 mb. I tried to download it with Free Download Manager, Internet Download Manager, DownThemAll but it also stopped at 99%. This problem is on all my browsers. I didn't have any Internet Connection problems while downloading the iso. I tried to download files that are larger than 2GB but its the same problem. I am on a DSL connection. I need this iso to install it on another computer. How to solve this problem ?

A:Why I can't download Windows 7 Profesional 32 bit from Digital River ?

Usually what happens after 99% is that the file is moved from a temp folder to the download folder, and then scanned by your antivirus program. Try and delete all browsing history, verify there's enough free space on the disk, and temporarily disable the antivirus.

Which version of Windows 7 is the DVD? If the DVD is damaged, which it sounds as if it is, then you can legitimately download a legitimate version of the same Windows 7 ISO - hint : do a search in Google using the terms "Digital River".

When you purchase Windows 7, you are actually just purchasing the product key number. You could use any 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate installation disc to install it on your computer, then use your product key number to activate it.

I used the fix that's been circling round the forums and have got it installed and working. The only thing I'm missing is a product key. Wasn't Digital River supposed to give me one in my confirmation email? I've received nothing of the sort, and would really like to activate this product I've purchased. I have product keys from previous versions of Windows that I've bought, but the machine I installed Windows 7 on was using Linux as its main operating system. Any thoughts?

There is no trial version of Win7, only a 30 day grace period before you must activate so you can decide if this is an install you want to keep. You should already own a license. If so then read carefully over the steps to get and keep a perfect Clean Reinstall Windows 7. It discusses in Step 1 how to find replacement media.

I've been following the above thread where a guy kept trying to download a Windows 7 iso from Digital River, and it was wrong size/'not an iso' etc. Even though I don't need any iso's myself, I thought I'd have a go at downloading one to see what the OP's problem was. Sure enough I had the same result - 2.49GB (not 3.09GB for x64). Twice in fact.

That was browser download, so I tried 2 separate download managers. Seemed fine at first, but both stopped at 99.9%. Curious . . .

I'm starting to wonder if Microsoft are playing the old 'poison torrent' game - record labels sometimes release bad torrents of music CDs into the wild and fans download them (illegally) but are disappointed when it's a fake. After a few more useless attempts to get the CD, the pirate gives up and buys the product (well that's the theory).

Pretty soon all computers on sale will be Windows 8, and a lot of folk will buy one but want to downgrade to W7. MS seem to be moving the goalposts on that scenario, but no probs - we can just get a W7 iso from Digital River. Or can we ???

Just like the 'poison torrents', after several failed W7 Digital River downloads I guess MS expect us all to give up and buy into W8 (and buy their video's + mp3's).

A:Something wrong at Digital River ?

You can remove your tin foil hat - sort of.

I used Pale Moon to download the ISO mentioned in the thread and it was fine
(e.g. I could mount it via Virtual CloneDrive and look around at the files...
...I could also build a virtual machine from it via VirtualBox.).

I also downloaded two other ISOs at the same time. One was fine, but X17-59465 was weird.
The last ISO in the screenshot above should be that same size as the first ISO.
X17-59465.iso looked fine.
I could mount it via Virtual CloneDrive.
I could even start the OS install process, but it barfed:

Notice the size being reported during the download.
That download was the 3rd try.
The completed download below it was 2nd try.

And these two download attempts were via another ISP:

Both of those downloads were via IE10. Both claimed that the download was interrupted. I looked at the file size of the ".partial" file before hitting the Resume button. The ".partial" file was the same exact file size (2.619...) shown in the first image of this post. Pressing Resume started the download all over again - but the "resumed" download made no claim of an interruption. Each second try just gave me the 2.619... file.

How odd.

I am running a MacBook Pro, and had Windows XP running under bootcamp. Downloaded from Digital River and had all the problems. Finally got it to boot, but wouldn't install due to unable to create folder.

Scrubbed bootcamp partition and tried using Parallels. So far so good, but not for long. Won't take my product key as I have the upgrade product 32bit, but at least it got that far.)

Now, reloading windows XP on bootcamp, and my XP disc has a scratch on it and can't be read

Ah well

In our household we have two students, and so ordered a copy of Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Home Premium in both x64 and x86 versions - a total of 4 products from Digital River.

Having used their download manager to download these files, I now have 6 files: 4 .exe files (as expected) plus 2 files named setup1.box and setup2.box.

The .exe files are, however, only just over 70KB each, setup1.box is almost 3GB and setup2.box is 163KB.

Running the Home PRemium versions fails immeditaely, saying it can't find the required files. Running the Pro x64 .exe file starts to build a .iso file ("Unloading the box"), but then fails with an unspecified error.

Any ideas?

Please obtain these links by contacting Digital River customer support. The Windows 7 ISO file is large (>2GB). Please verify that you have sufficient hard disk space to download this file and install Windows 7. Approx. 20GB will be enough for both operations.
Download the Windows 7 ISO image and save the file to a location you can remember. The download may take a considerable amount of time on slower internet connections.

As Jann from Heidoc reports in Windows 7 Direct Download Links as of now only English and Spanish are still up, links being replaced by a new MS Recovery Center that provides ISO's for a retail Product Key.

I'd also had heard from SIW2 who couldn't get it to take his retail key due to a Language error. I also had the same error on two of my retail Keys. The address we were using is Microsoft Software Recovery

But if it's not allowing Product Keys from COA stickers then it is another ridiculous attack on the ability of MS customers to get the best possible install of the OS they bought with their PC even after over a million consumers have done so following Clean Reinstall Windows 7. I honestly thought we were beyond this, but apparently not.

I'm going to wait a day before bringing this up to the MVP forums to see if anything changes.

It looks like the Digital River iso downloads of Windows 7 are done. A person now has to enter a key on this page to get the iso. I have not confirmed yet if an OEM Windows 7 key will work. Maybe Microsoft will reinstate those links but I doubt it.

A:Microsoft Digital River iso downloads - gone for good?

Looks like they are gone. sari and Toffee informed me about it yesterday, apparently, a lot of people (including MVPs) aren't happy with that decision, but there's nothing that can be done. I have the Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bits .iso on my computer, which is one of the most popular, and I can access all the others be entering the product keys I have and also use my e5.onthehub (DreamSpark) account, but I think that uploading them and distributing them would be illegal. This is kind of stupid too. What if the person needs a recovery DVD to access the Recovery PE, but lost his product key on the sticker. The only way would be to grab it from Windows itself, but it wouldn't be bootable. Hopefully they'll make these .iso available to the public again.

A:Win7 Digital River Master Disc Won't Boot

You say you can't boot from the disk even after making correct BIOS boot order settings, but then describe the disk loading. How does the disk load if not booted?

Do you get the prompt to "hit any key to boot from CD/DVD drive?" If you do this, does it then begin loading with a progress bar and proceed as you say? That is booting from the DVD.

If it was not able to boot from the DVD then it would start into Windows 7 and probably bring up the Autoplay menu of the DVD in the drive. Is this what happens?

It is possible that the DVD only has the files and isn't bootable. If so, we can help you create a bootable ISO from the files to burn to a DVD.

Hiya

Excel and PowerPoint have a macro security framework that controls
the execution of macros and prevents macros from running
automatically. Under this framework, any time a user opens a
document the document is scanned for the presence of macros.
If a document contains macros, the user is notified and asked
if he wants to run the macros or the macros are disabled entirely,
depending on the security setting. A flaw exists in the way macros
are detected that can allow a malicious user to bypass macro
checking.

A malicious attacker could attempt to exploit this vulnerability
by crafting a specially formed Excel or PowerPoint document with
macro code that would run automatically when the user opened it.
The attacker could carry out this attack by hosting the malicious
file on a web site, a file share, or by sending it through email

Hiya

I think one of the Moderators changed my title of my last post so I have put it like this. The CERT/CC is a recognised security site.

CERTŪ Advisory CA-2001-28 Automatic Execution of Macros

An intruder can include a specially crafted macro in a Microsoft Excel or PowerPoint document that can avoid detection and run automatically regardless of the security settings specified by the user

Systems running:

I see lots of auctions on ebay for the Windows 7 key and a link to download Win 7. Are these legit? I guess it's the same process as the RC where you download an ISO and burn it to a DVD?

Win 7 Home Premium for under $30 sounds like a great deal.

Thanks!

They would be more likely pirated copies, or already activated ones.

I have a 3.1 mega/pixels camera, ulead software for downloading pictures. When I click start to download I get a popup that says you are about to download large hard drive file. What am I doing wrong? I went to the ulead site for help, but hit a dead end, IE says address not found.

USB is plugged into computer, camera is on. Have a lot of pictures in this camera, really want to get them out!

P.S. I am not too computer smart, so simple language please!

Have you tried just plugging the camera into the computer. My camera, which plugs in via a USB cable, is automatically recognized by Windows XP when I plug it in. Then I can simply copy the files off using Explorer. I did not need to install any software first.

I have XP and a Sony digital camera. When I connected the camera to the computer with the USB cord a download Wizard talked me through the download process. Somewhere along the line I uninstalled Sony Imagestation (thinking I didn't need it, but I have it back now) and I think it was then that I lost the "Wizard". I now have to go to My Computer, and click onto Sony Memory STick etc and move files from there. I liked my "Wizard" so much more - how do I get him back?

Did you try: Start, click Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Scanners and Cameras. Right-click the camera from which you want to get pictures and click the appropriate option for that device?

I purchased a copy of W7 through digital river so I could get the student discount. They offer a digital download than consists of a zipped file that I must unpack or run to install. I have never done an install like this before. For $13 I can purchase a back-up media disk which I did but would still like to know how this process works.

I want to do a clean install of W7 Professional but can't seem to wrap my head around how that is accomplished through using this method. I always delete my partitions then install to get the cleanest possible result. If I wipe the harddrive then essentially I am deleting the files that are doing the installation.

The website suggest purchasing a backup disk but I would love to perform a clean install the day I download the software. I guess worst case scenario I can do a clean install of vista and then upgrade before I put anything else on the computer.

What format is the file? Zip? ISO? other?

How big is it?

When you unzip it, do you get folders and files or one ISO file?

The control panel camera & Scanner settings shows the camera as device ready when I turn the camera on. Cannon suggested I redownload the Camera Window software - it didn't help. Then said my video card (3dfx voodoo3)has a problem- but according to system settings it's okay and it works fine for everything else. About a year ago I had a Pentax digital camera (a cheap model) and although the pictures wern't that great it downloaded with no problems. (Yes, I removed its software) Any ideas? The camera isn't much good if I can't dowload photos! Thank You!

I bought an inexpensive digital camera which I intended to use on both my computers. It came with a driver disc for XP and installation was no problem. It works great.

However, when I attempt to download the driver for my computer with Windows Me, I can download the exe file just fine - but when I attempt to install, I get through the language selection screen, then click on install, and get the following message: "The file 'C:WINDOWS\INF;C:\CABS\stv680.inf' could not be opened. Please check that your disk is not full and that you have access to the destination directory. The system cannot find the path specified." My disk is not full - I know that for sure - about 80% free right now. Anyone have any suggestions about what my problem might be? I have contacted the camera site, but as of yet have not been able to find the problem. Appreciate any help anyone in here might have. Thanks!

I purchased Adobe Pro from Dell online.  I received the confirmation and subsequent email saying it was completed.  I followed the link to my My Locker account where it showed my confirmed purchase.  There was a link that said "Download Link."  This is the only thing that could be clicked.  After clicking it a program was downloaded (smartsource.MediaManager.application).  Every time I try to run this program it fails.  I can upload the error report, but it says to contact the supplier.  I don't anticipate support from Dell any time soon.  Now I've paid for software and not able to use it.

A:Adobe Pro digital download link not working

nyland,
You can click the link for my dell downloads, register at the site and you should be able to download the program.

Downloads from the site must use Internet Explorer.
For me to better assist in troubleshooting, please click my DELL-Jesse L and send me a Private Message with the Dell Service Tag number and your Dell Order number.
You would click my name in blue, then on the next page in the upper right corner, click the words "send private message"

Just started using new PC that came with Windows 7 installed. Attempts to download pictures from a Canon A460 digital camera fail. It auto-initiates and the PC displays a popup that shows it recognizes the camera and goes through the motions of beginning a download. Then a second popup displays: "No new pictures or videos were found on this device". There is a link to a download settings menu in the first popup, but it won't display while the second popup is open. Upon closing the second popup, they both go away.

This camera readily downloads pictures into a PC running Windows XP Home Edition, or the PC Linux Operating System as well. No cockpit problems here that this experienced PC user can discern.
