No audio device installed error and devices wont show in Device Manager

Q: No audio device installed error and devices wont show in Device Manager

I'm trying to fix an hp pavillion dv6704nr laptop running windows vista home premium. It has the little red x on the speaker in the lower right hand corner. The owner said it has been there for some months. I have tried downloading the current audio drivers for the computer but every time I try to install the driver, I get an error that says the device couldn't be found.

The first time i restarted the computer, after the driver installation failed, the audio came back and worked fine, until I had to restart the computer. Now I keep getting the same error and nothing i have found so far online has helped.

There are no yellow triangles in the device manager and the device list isn't showing the category for "sound, video and gaming etc." at all.

Please help. I did a search but the other threads didn't solve this problem for me.
Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: No audio device installed error and devices wont show in Device Manager

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I see three different audio driver packages at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwar...ct=3646926#N661.You need to find the right one to install. If you install one and the system doesn't work properly...please uninstall it before trying the next one.Installing the wrong one won't do anything harmful to your system...it just won't do any good to leave it installed.Louis

I have a Toshiba laptop, model L505-ES5018. I had Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit installed on here, but decided to reformat my hard drive using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. After the reformat was finished, I ran Windows Update and it found several items to download and install for me. I noticed that it also found optional items to download and install for me, so after all the important updates installed, I ran the optional updates. After all of this installed, I checked Device Manager to see if there were any errors and I found nothing. I assumed everything was fine. I decided to check Devices and Printers and under my laptop icon, there was a yellow icon with an exclamation point on it. I decided to run the troubleshooting option when I right-clicked the icon....it gave me a solution to download a Toshiba password utility program, so I did that and nothing happened, even after restart. Same icon appeared. When I clicked on the icon a second time, I noticed that the model of my computer at the bottom of this window, changed from L505 to TIAS. I have no idea what this is. I decided to do another reformat on my hard drive. This time, I ignored the optional updates. I checked Devices and Printers again, the same icon appeared but the model of my computer said L505, like it should. There is something in the optional updates that is changing this. Could it be the Intel chipset driver that the optional update is pushing? I'm not sure. I went back to Device Manager, th... Read more

i have installed the correct driver for this belkin bluetooth usb dongle model: F8T012XX1

but in device manager, it has the belkin device and microsoft bluetooth enumerator, which is great. but when u get further down the list. it has a tab named "other devices" and then a subtab with "bluetooth peripheral device" which has an exclemation mark on it.

i have searched for driver software using the update service but it cant find no update.

i have looked for the name of the manufacturer but found nothing.

i then disabled the unknown device, and sent a picture to my mobile phone. which confirmed that it was not the belkin bluetooth device. so i uninstalled the unknown device, restarted the computer. then when i logged in, it said that it had found a new device and wanted me to find the CD that came with it..

i would be greatful if any1 could help me on this..

thanks in advance

Hi folks,

I am attaching a screenshot of entries in Device Manager 'Show Hidden Devices' that have yellow exclamation marks on them.
Their properties say "This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)"

I recently uninstalled my Iomega 100 zip drive as I haven't used it for years and I'm wondering if these are left-overs from that. I can't think of anything else I've done to cause them. Can anyone help please?

In Device Manager I have a category 'Other devices' with two Unknown device under it.
I have a ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe Socket 939 Mother Board. (in case anyone has the same and thinks they can help) This is my second install of win 7. The first install I had troubles with win 7 and my realtek sound card; as well as these two unknown devices. I was able to fix the realtek problem on the first install, but not the unknown devices.

On this install win 7 had no problems with the MB's built in Realtek sound chip. Nice to know Microsoft is busy working on these things. :-) <~ brown nosing. Last install after solving so many little problems on my own I decided to tackle these Unknown devices. Up to that point all I'd done is right click on them and tell win 7 to update the drivers.
First I downloaded any new drivers and software from Asus for vista and this mother board. Then right clicked on them and chose update driver and pointed to each (unzipped) download in succession. Then I did the same using the CD that came with my MB. Then I just started running the programs in the hopes that one of them would do it.
Afterwards I still had the two Yellow ! unknown Devices and what seemed to me a very sluggish computer. So I've done a fresh install and now am looking to find out what these items are and get the drivers installed in a less hap hazard way.
Too that end I booted up a fresh install of XP on the same comp to compare the two device managers. The two compare until th... Read more

I have two USB audio devices that I cannot seem to properly install drivers for.
Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 & KORG MicroKONTROL

I am in communication with both product tech support teams but so far they have not offered a successful solution. As the same issue is occurring with multiple devices I thought it might be an OS issue.
I run Win 7 Home Premium x64

The problem is as follows:

The product drivers install correctly without error. However, instead of showing up in the Device Manager in either USB Controllers or Sound Controllers they both show in Other Devices with a yellow exclamation mark.
I have tried the following fix from this site (USB Driver - General Fix for Problems) and this actually enabled me to access a portable HDD that wasn't working, but it didn't fix the issue for my 2 audio devices.
I have also tried right clicking on the devices in Other Devices, selecting Driver Update. I then find the correct drivers listed but when I hit install I get the following error message on both:
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. One of the installers for this device cannot perform the installation at this time."

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Jetway PA78VM5-H-LF motherboard.

Newegg.com - JetWay JPA78VM5-H-LF AM2+/AM2 AMD 780V HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

It's discontinued.

Downloaded the lan drivers for the onboard lan at Jetway.

Jetway - Tech.On The Move - Motherboard - PA78VM5/PA78VM5D

Went to install and I got this error.

The RealTek Network Adapter/Controller was not found.
If Deep Sleep Mode enabled Please Plug the Cable

I went to device manager and the device isn't showing up at all.

I don't have the device under network devices. Even when showing hidden devices.

Onboard Lan is enabled in bios.

Really clueless why it wont show up in device manager.

The weird thing is when I shut my computer down and restart it the ethernet on the back of the mobo turns red.

I have to unplug the tower and power cycle it to get it to restart.

And whenever I get into Windows 7 (64) the clock is always reset.

Any idea? I've pretty much done everything, I have never used it since I have a wireless USB device but I need to use the Ethernet for the time being.

I will try to install chipset drivers.

Maybe I need to update the bios? Anyone know a good how to flash guide?

A:I installed audio drivers but device manager shows a yellow triangle o

Please open Device Manager, and then post a screenshot of the Properties for the device with the triangle. I would also suggest ensuring that your audio/sound card is connected properly, or if it's a onboard sound card then it may even be broken.

How old is your computer?

Update your System Specifications with Speccy, and then copy this information into your System Specifications: Go to your UserCP, and then select Edit System Spec in the left pane. Copy the information from Speccy into the required fields. These System Specifications will then follow your every post.

I would strongly suggest installing some form of ant-virus protection on your computer.

Install and perform full scans with:Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download
Microsoft Security Essentials | Protect against viruses, spyware, and other malware

Remember to install the free version of Malwarebytes not the free trail; untick the free trial box during installation. MSE is the most lightweight and compatible with the Windows 7 operating system

When you look in the device manager double click the to devices and check the device status and see why the exclamation is there. If it says driver is not installed or installed incorrectly then try to reinstall the drivers just insert your motherboard disk and click the update driver button. Odds are if you have a sound card installed and on board sound you'll have to disable onboard sound in bios. Also the same if your using a ethernet card and have onboard ethernet connector.

The AUDIO FADE PROBLEM is an issue with this laptop and I am wondering if it is related to the above.
I have upgraded to the latest BIOS and drivers using the Dell Product Support pages.
Every other day I have to reinstall the Realtek Audio Device to get audio from streaming media.
The current Driver Version is from Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Date 12/08/2016 which is what it defaults to upon reinstall.
I suspect that for whatever reason Dell has not yet come up with a fix. Has it something to do with the fact that although I bought the laptop new, it had been upgraded from Windows 8 to 10? (A fact that I only discovered later)

When I checked the notification area, I saw this:However, when I right click and click "Playback Devices", I get the following: I immediately checked Device Manager, and found that everything appeared to be fine:I tried uninstalled and reinstalling the Conexant and NVIDIA drivers, as well as updating BIOS. Nothing seems to help, When try to use the mute/volume buttons on the keyboard, the speaker mute button lights up when pressed, but the microphone mute and volume +/- buttons don't appear to do anything. I've also tried plugging in headphones, and that does not make any difference. When I boot from an Ubuntu CD, however, sound works fine, so I don't think that it's a hardware issue.Anything that you folks could do to point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Hi Malware Specialist!

I started out in the "Am I infected?" Forum and a junior specialist sent me here to get further help, here is the link to the 4 logs I ran for him:

For several days I have been trying to complete the preliminary steps required by this forum, I can not back up to windows/microsoft program (Backup Configuration not valid 0X8100029), but hopefully the two other programs I used were successful, namely cobaine and driveimage. At the end of the driveimage session, it frozen and there was "Globalroot\device" followed by various endings. Then it completed and said finished. Also it went to blue screen the firsttime I tried to run GMER and rebooted.

The main problems of slow programs from startup, no devices in device manager, no audio device and no printing capability began after I ran some kids software games that kinda of frozen the computer, although I believe whatever is making my computer upset has been there for awhile and may have something to do with remnants of roxio 2009 and other shared folders. In services it says "Configuration Manager machine selected for remote communication is not available at this time."

I had some trouble last night and today with getting rid of a virus. Now that it is gone, I am having sound problems (maybe related, maybe not). This morning, when I opened iTunes I got a message that there was no audio device detected. After trying several things, I rebooted. Magically, I could play music again. However, a short while later, I again got an error message telling me that there is no audio device found, even though it shows up in Device Manager as working properly. The problem goes away for a short time after I reboot, but returns. It is Realtek AC 97. Why won't my computer keep recognizing it?

Hi All!

Any and every help/advice is appreciated... I have an Asus K8-8VM mobo, and (yes it's) an Athlon 3000+ (K8 proc, i know i am to upgrade in a week or 2). The problem is that every time i restart after having installed audio drivers, the OS shows that no audio device is installed. I did some comprehensive googling about the same... however, i only found that i need to switch off my dsl router, if i must have audio on Vista. XP, it does fine for playback and all, it's only Vista which is causing me grief. My speaker system is a 4.1 setup, could that be an issue?

This happens on both Vista X64 or X86 (ultimate versions)

All those problems just noticed in last few days (no sound, no DVD, system restore doesn't work?) as that also makes wonder if you have malware...

Also List any Problem Devices

Make sure devices are connected and powered on
Click Start->Run, enter: msinfo32. Click the + sign next to Components to expand it
Click Problem Devices. Anything appear?
If yes, click on it, Ctrl-A to select all, Ctrl-C to copy it, Ctrl-V to paste into next post
On the other hand, if no devices are listed, tell me so
Generate and attach a DirectX report

Click Start->Run, enter dxdiag and click OK
===> If you?re on a 32bit computer, dxdiag will launch on its own

(Please tell me if I'm in the wrong area of this board)

But a friend living hundreds of miles away uses XP and ran an "unasked for" Pop-Up utility that said he had computer problems because of malware or spyware some unnamed entity had installed on his computer. Unfortunately he doesn't remember the name of the "so called spyware detector/remover", but he fell for the "Warning" and ran the program to "check" his system.

Of course, as most those unrequested detect/remover programs do...it found many "so called serious" problems. But would Not "fix/clean them" unless he payed for the program.

From THAT point on, his CD-ROM wouldn't work(which it had dependably always before)....the Device Manager that it "is there" and what make/model it is....and also says that it is enabled and working properly(but it isn't working, as before). And the Icon disappeared from from the My Computer folder. I guess that program somehow did something to it, in order to force people to pay for the program to "fix it" and othe so-called problems!

Has anybody ever heard of this?
Can you help me get his CD-ROM accessable and working dependably as before? Please??

I'm hoping someone may be able to help me, and if so, will receive my eternal thanks

About 2 months ago, all of a sudden my sound stopped working on my laptop - yet the speaker icon in the bottom right of the toolbar was still showing itself as working. Occasionally, when I would re-start my computer, the sound would work. But then 'randomly' go off again after half an hour or so.

After a week or so of this, the speaker symbol then changed to one with a red cross and the message "No Audio Output Device is Installed". Again, for a few weeks, this would appear intermittently. Sometimes I would have sound. Sometimes I would not have sound but the speaker symbol would be ok. And sometimes I would have no sound and the speaker symbol would be the one with the red cross.

For the past couple of weeks now though, all I see is the speaker with the red cross and the same 'No Audio Output.." message.

I'm at a loss as to how to get my speakers back.
- I've tried a System Restore to before all the issues started, but that didn't work.
- I've tried installing the appropriate soundcard driver, which didn't work (but admittedly, I didn't really know what i was doing, so may have made a mistake here).
- I've tried the odd online cleanup program, but to no avail either.

Finally, within Device Manager, the sound card doesn't even exist anymore.

I uninstalled those drivers and installed the 2010 Realtek drivers for Vista (R2.42) but nothing worked.
Oh by the way, I don't have the Sound, Video and Game Controller section on the Device Manager menu.

I have Windows XP Home Edition w/ Service Pack 2 on a Dell Dimension 2400. No audio devices detected. When I open Device Manager it is completely blank - no devices of any kind are shown. Same with Hardware. I haven't made any recent changes to anything having to do with audio, just a System Restore or two, and I don't know if the problem started before or after that.

Edit: Ok, I got the devices to show up by enabling Plug and Play. None of them have the yellow exclamation mark. Gonna try troubleshooting the audio devices...

Troubleshooting didn't work, updating drivers didn't work, Windows Help and Support was no help.

Please help

Hi there,

So when I woke up my computer from sleep this morning, for whatever reason, the sound didn't appear to be working. Nothing seemed to be amiss, but I simply wasn't getting any sound. When I clicked on the speaker icon and tried adjusting the volume, the bar would show up, but there'd be no sound.

So I tried restarting the computer, and the speaker icon now had a red cross next to it, and says "No audio output device is installed" when hovering over it. Clicking it brings up a "detecting problems" window, but it always says that no problems have been found, and/or that hardware changes may not have been detected.

When I go into device manager, there's no tab for "Sound", instead, it shows "other devices" with a question mark symbol next to it, and below it is "multimedia audio controller", which has a yellow warning triangle next to it. Trying to update the drivers does nothing, it apparently can't find any. When I click on the properties for the device, it says "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)".
I can't seem to find what manufacturer it is or what not, since it lists everything as being "not known".

My computer is a Windows 7 64 bit, doesn't appear to be having any other issues currently aside from the sound not working at all. I've tried plugging in headphones as well (via the USB) to see if I could get sound from that, but nothing.

I haven't made any changes to my co... Read more

I used to have audio through my monitor speakers, but it suddenly stopped working in Nov. 2016.My computer is divided into two parts.I'm the adminisrator & I have my part of the computer password protected. My husband is the other authorized user & his part of the computer is NOT password protected. This computer is a Compaq Simline model s5213w & we are running Windiws 7 on it. It had Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it when we bought it a number of years ago. We had sound through the monitor speakers up until the last part of the month of Nov. 2016. Then they just suddenly quit working.I have tried everything I can think of to restore the sound, the monitor speakers are fine, but so far I have only been able to get the sound working on the part of the computer my husband uses, but I have no audio on the part of the computer I use.Could the fact that I have it password protected have something to do with me not having any sound?I don't know a whole lot about computers & my husband knows even less. Should I just get rid of the password I have currently installed? I really would like to, BUT I don't know how to do this. I would appreciate any suggestions right away as this is really interffering with me being able to hear the videos I need & want to hear. Sincerely,Fran Bethell ([email protected]

I have posted this in the wrong forum i think previously.I have tried updating drivers numerous times without success. i Have two hdd installed in my laptop an Acer Aspire 7520. I tried re installing w7 pro on one hdd but the problem remains.I cannot play/edit my music library because of the problem. On booting sometimes i have sound without any problem but more times than not an x appears on the task bar sound icon.Is this a problem with the bios? I know there appears to be a bios update available but i am reluctant to download it.

So I'm having the same issue. I had this issue a month or so ago so I went to HP Recovery and reverted back to previous windows updates and viola! my sound was restored!

Since then I've been having a lot of Internet issues, websites not available, DNS server issues (which I do not believe I am even USING a DNS server, but I'm not sure!), etc. So, I decided to reinstall Windows 7 updates and now I have the same annoying no sound issue. I read the previous posts and have attached a screenshot of my Device Manager.

I've also installed Malware Bytes and it keeps showing something called "rock.turner.addon" but I haven't been able to remove this either. I removed this add-on for all browsers (Google Chrome, IE, Firefox), but it still won't delete from the list of fprogram files, even though I've "uninstalled" it from the control panel.

think I've got some type of software issue here, but I have no idea where to start. I keep seeing "resolving host" on sites trying to load also.

Any help is most appreciated! Thank you.

I have an Aspire 5750Z laptop. My audio randomly stopped working. It was working the night before no problem. I hadn't done any updates to my laptop. My dolby disappeared.I have tried the acer recovery no luck and I even uninstalled the Realtek driver and downloaded the audio driver from Acer and reinstalled it. Now it shows the realtek and Dolby there and working and up to date but I still have no audio and I have a red X on the volume icon reading that no audio output device installed. My laptop is 3 years old and I'm running windows 7. I have a flag saying I can upgrade to windows 10 but haven't. My research has shown other people having this issue when they upgraded to windows 8 and 10 but I have not updated my OS. Can someone please help me?

We have two M83 desktops that both have an error in Device Manager next to the High Definition Audio Controller. So far we have tried the latest audio driver on the driver download page (Realtek as well as the last Win7 driver that worked in our Win7 image and neither were able to satisfy the yellow exclamation point. One of the M83's has an NVidia vidio card installed, so I updated it's driver to the latest version on NVidia's site and it did not help either. We never had this problem in Win7, it has only appeared since introducing Win10.Can you please point me in the right direction for an Audio driver that will work in Win10? The hardware specs are as follows... ThinkStation M83 SFFModel: 10AHS3QP00Serial #: MJ03B80W High Definition Audio ControllerPCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8C20&SUBSYS_309F17AA&REV_04 Thank you,wwill93

Well, this time I did it but good! I was trying to figure out WHY my Stereo Mix was disabled and unable to be "enabled" and I did something that totally screwed up any type of sound from my HP running Windows 7! Now there is the dreaded red X on the speaker icon and the error "No Output Device is Installed" is the error when I hover over it! I have done the audio playback troubleshooting and the error is "audio device is disabled" and when I try to use a specific playback program (Express Scribe), I get the error "Unable to start playback . . . This might mean you do not have a sound card installed or the sound card is being used by another application"

Do you have try the Device on a other Device maybe there is an issue with it. If with it is all right with the device, maybe you can try to reinstall the driver for this device. https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/fix-code-43-error-device-manager/
