OK , having major difficulties getting these fixes to work. I have windows vista premium home, hjt will do the scan but halfway through says for some reason "your system denied write access to the Hosts file" I tried to set hjt to run as administrator but that is grayed out, so when I select "ok" it finishes the scan but no copy is posted in notepad. I did actually select a few known trash and it did remove them. dds appears to do its scan but doesn't post any results in notepad. And rootrepeal gives me a device controller error and wont scan. Does anyone have any suggesting on what to do? I did a system repair back to the 30 of December but that seemed to on reduce the popups.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

Interesting problem, my MFC 7820n suddenly decided that it would take 10 minutes to scan a black and white page in 100 dpi resolution where it used to only take 10 seconds. Also, when trying to make a copy, it takes an absurd long time and then only copys 3/4 of the page.

If I unplug the network cable, the copy function works perfectly. If I send documents to print, no problem. So it would seem that the network function of the scanner is messing with the copy function??? Any ideas on how to remedy this? I've talked with Brother support for 1.5 hours, they say take it to a repair person. The network settings are set correctly (per Brother) and so I don't know what to do next.

Operating system is Windows XP Home, but I doubt that it matters since when the network plug is pulled it copies fine.

My guess is that the nic port on the printer died. From what I can tell, that printer is 6yrs old. Nothing lasts forever and the price of MF printers is pretty cheap now. I just bought an epson top of the line MF printer, scanner, fax that works perfectly for all of $179 at the egg.

Getting yours repaired is going to cost at least that much IF you can get repair parts.

My computer was infected by SpywareQuake awhile ago, i followed the instruction step by step and the SpyQuake was removed, it was gone. And now it appears again in my active scan again (but i dont see any windows pop up in the bottom right of the screen saying that "my computer is seriously infected" like before). So im just wondering that there are something that i missed or my computer is infecting again. I greatly appreciate you guys can help me out, thank you so very much

I'm fixing my aunt's computer and I just find this out that formatting the partition isn't going to work out due to the fact that that they unfortunately lost all recovery cd's.... I do not wanna go through the trouble of special ordering them so I was wondering if anyone could help. So the problems with the computer are these: McAfee virus scan and all options are disabled, when I tried running Malwarebyte's it said that I have no permission and to contact the administrator, and when I try uninstalling something, it just says "cannot run plug in. please try again later" I'm starting to get frustarted because i scanned the HDD through another computer and it deleted all visible trojans and what now but it still has the same problems. Someone help!

My McAfee Real-Time Scan will not remain enabled. When I try to run either Quick Scan or Full Scan, an error message comes up, telling me to return to the McAfee Internet Security Home and to try to run the scan again.

I have followed their instructions for re-enabling the Real-Time Scan to the best of my abilities, by trying to restart the McShield Service, and by running the oas-disabled-fix.cmd utility that they instructed me to download. The oas-disabled-fix.cmd utility will not run.

I have contacted McAfee and they have told me that it is a problem with Windows Update. I have contacted Microsoft and told them that as well, but they seem to be trying to rule out any other possible cause, than what McAfee says is the actual cause of the problem, thereby dragging this out even longer.

Microsoft is supposed to be getting back to me again tomorrow, but any other help would be appreciated.

Almost every time I do quick scan and got nothing and I think it is good. However, I just read online, it says that when quick scan does not find anything then you do deep scan. It confuses me, since it means I should do deep scan all the time. ?

ON windows defender and malwarebytes and many others only a quick scan is necessary
The converse of what you have read is usually the case eg. You do a quick scan and only if that finds something should you then need to follow it with a full scan
For instance a threat scan on Malwarebytes paid for edition or the scan on the free version will scan up to 99% of the system
A full scan also scans the system restore points and other unusual places to detect, or at least try to detect, all possible traces of infection.
As I said it depends on the AV and to some extent the OS which I presume is not Windows 2000 as indeed commented on by my colleague Cookiegal in another of your topics
Also, it appears you're running Windows 7 and if you don't still have your Windows 2000 computer you should visit your profile and change that information so that it's current which makes it easier to help you in some casesClick to expand...

i tried to do the on-line Panda scan a few times, once my dial-up connection disconnected it, and i couldnt get it back, and I tried it 2 more times and it stalled about 3/4 of the way thru, even tho i was still connected. When i do Spybot S&D scan it stalls midway too, several times, i have to keep moving my mouse around for a while to get it to start again. Why do u think this keeps happening on my computer?( Virus scan was negative, and i deleted some adware with a scan i did a day before.) I know the Panda scan used Actixe X which i had to download to do the scan. Should i delete it now? What would it look like and where would it be on the computer.?
I have an old Dell OptiPlex GX1 Pentium 2 with 350 MHZ, with 256 RAM and WIN ME O.S. with 10 G. storage with a slow dial-up connection. Thank in advance. ZUZU2

I have a toshiba with a windows 7 64bit, and it's been acting really slow recently and freezing up on me so I thought there might be viruses that I needed to get rid of, so I restarted my computer so I could go in safe mode with networking to check if there really were. When I restarted my computer I momentarily forgot to press the f8 key and the windows starting screen with the logo showed up. Without thinking I turned off my computer since I didn't want to restart again (it took forever for the computer to do). Once I turned the laptop on again I ended up going to system repair. For some reason this did nothing to my computer. I left it on for hours and hours until I finally decided I wasn't going to get any results. I once again restarted the laptop but this time when I went to system repair I cancelled it and when into more options and tried doing a system restore which also didn't work and said a bunch of my files couldn't be read. When I looked back at the system repair log it said "system volume on disk is corrupt." I googled it trying to find something to help me, and every place said to run sfc scan, which I did on command prompt, which always gave me the reply "there's a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete" and since my computer can't reboot properly no matter what this is what it'll say. I suggest first before doing anymore repairs you need to make a backup of all your important data so as not to lose it.

A linux live cd choosing to run off the cd not install go to the windows installation and backup all your data to an ext hdd.

Then using startup repair option at F8 option choose choose the windows installation by highlightlng and choose next go to cmd prompt and type: chkdsk /r press enter

WinPatrol keeps detecting a new startup program and whilst I keep saying "No" it tries again about every five minutes. After I say "No" I get the warning "This setting is in a key location for your computer operating system. We do not recommend removal unless you are absolutely sure its causing probems".
The WinPatrol New Program Alert shows that it has "No Icon, No description found. Company name not included in this program".
I am therefore posting my HijackThis scan with the hope that someone will be able to advise me if it will be safe to delete this mystery program.

i think my computer is infected with the trojan.exploit.131 virus. pop-ups keep on popping up everywhere and opening up my IE browser and saying i have a system alert and then the pop-ups lead my browser to a site telling me to download their antivirus software. i tried using windows update but the site says i don't need any new updates. i have symnatec and it did not pick up anything. in addition, i downloaded the AVG anti-virus and scanned my computer in safemode but it didn't pick anything up either. the last thing i did was use SUPERantispyware and scanned my computer with it. it detected the trojan but after i rebooted i am still having the same exact problem. this is the log that i obtained after it finished scanning.

I would really appreciate it if someone can help me. I've been trying to fix this for the past 12 hours and nothing is making a difference.

Hi,I have my one-month-old Lenovo ThinkCentre E93Z hardware scan works fine not unless today! Found LSC.exe error and stuck at 53% forever leaves me no other resort but force shut down by pressing hold down its power button. I am not computer savvy just use it for creating documents and surfing net that's all. Any help for a fix and please advise what has caused this? Many thanks,Bradley

Sounds like your resolution is set to low. Increase it by right clicking the desktop, and choose screen resolution. Under resolution, set it to the recommended, and click apply and then ok.

Hello Rollin' Rog - a while back in one of your replies to a particular security thread you posted a link to site where suspect files could be submitted for online scans to a whole bunch of the leading AVs simultaneously. As I remember it it was an individual's website not a commercial website, and it also featured all the stats of comparative detection rates across the AVs nicely tabulated on the home page. It looked like a useful site but I can't find the link now - if you have time to post a reply I'd be grateful for the relevant link again - many thanks

Hello,Last night out of nowhere, "Memory Scan" malware turned up on my computer, saying it cannot detect hard drive bla de bla, but I can, done the usual and made an rkill log which you can see below. My browser (IE7) has gotten quite slow recently. I had a trojan (can't remember the name) pop up in my AVG Free scans twice in a row, and it said it was deleted. Nothing showed in my ZoneAlarm scans. (I have their security suite) I did an online scan with Panda (cookies only) and Kaspersky; K. showed a bunch of stuff but couldn't name them. Not sure if it's an issue or not, maybe just more cookies or whatever. Anyway, before I complain to my ISP yet again, I'd like to make sure everything is indeed clean. Close any open browsers.


Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Hi we ran the vundo fix posted here: http://forums.techguy.org/t406238.html

and at the end it instructs us to paste the result of the Panda active scan and a new hijack this logs "into this topic", we weren't really clear on what this "topic" was so we posted the results here.
Can someone review them and help us finish killing this beasty?

PS: we actually have two computers, "A" and "B",afflicted with this and have run the fix on both, I will post the results for computer "A" first and then may I post the results from computer "B" afterward so we can fix both in this one post?

I have a laptop running vista i run avg8.5 and malwarebytes for protection when i start avg scann whole computer 20 mins into scan the laptop turns off when i restart get message scan log corrupt have tried reinstalling avg no luck and tried using CMD commands to find and fix any errors and same thing happens half way through the task it shuts off I have no clue what has gone wrong any one have some idea what could this mean.

Are you still having this problem? If so, do the following:
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)

Hello and hopefully someone can help. I have spent some time searching and cant find the answer.
I ran AVG and scanned whole system. 4 Trojan Horses were found.
1 was a false positive
1 was secured
and 2 said take action, couldnt remove(something like that)(still have report result)
Now I update avg, rescan whole computer 2 times and nothing is found.
I scaned each file seperatly and it said pass.
Where the other 2 trojans removed or not being detected now?
They were called Trojan Horse Generic32.EGL
Please help me understand the result and what to do

Okay, here's my problem:
My hard drive is failing. It's under warranty and can be replaced.
I had an AVI capture from my camcorder that was several Gb, but is now marked at 0 kb.
Undelete software does not help as the file has not been deleted, but truncated to 0 kb.
I know in theory the data is recoverable.

Here's my theory:
Make an image of the whole hard drive, some 200 Gb.
Put this image on my PC at work and somehow scan this image and extract all video content.
Is there an application that will rip all video content from a large file that contains other "junk"?

I ran an sfc (system scan) and it generated the following error:

Ok i did a bit of searching and found that running sfc/scannow in command prompt would display any errors as ive been getting non responsive programs and crashing computer for a few days now.
It finished and said this:
Ive tried to access the file but it says access is denied. I am the admin and only user on this computer so not sure why.

I have a
Win 7 home 64bit SP 1 ( NO Install dis)

My pc has been slowing down and sometimes crashing
I have ran the following ...

A variety of virus and malware scans (clean)
The CHKDSK from the windows command prompt ( no bad sectors)
SFC & SFCfix scans ( at least 4 or five) a lot of errors were
System Update Readiness Tool 2 times
I still have 2 corrupt files ( I do not have install disk)

Right click at Start button > click Command Prompt (Admin) > at the flashing prompt, copy/paste this.......
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

> press Enter.
It will take some time.
When it is finished, it will give you the report.

There is a chance you get the error code and message that " sources file could not be found ".
If that happens, please post back. There is a way to fix that.

hi i have run the sfc scan 3 times each time it says it has fixed files? yet when i run again it says it has corrupt files?

is something beyond repair or is there just lots of corrupt files and sfc can only do so many at a time so has to be re-run until there all done?

The System File Checker (SFC) can only repair files that are in the mirror. And those are only the most important files. For a better resule you have to run a startup/repair with your installation/repair disc. That has a bigger inventory of files.

But even then there may be files that cannot be repaired - e.g. ,dlls that came with program installations that were not on the original installation disc but which were installed from the web.

I have many old albums filled with old pictures that I would like to get onto my computer. I have scanned many of them, but it is a very time-consuming process. Somewhere I heard that photographing the pictures with a digital camera and uploading that image would be quicker. Perhaps I could even photograph a page at a time and not need to remove the prints from the album to do the job.
Any suggestions -- is this a good way to go? How should I go about it?

I'm looking for an efficient, relatively quick way to scan directly to a printer over a network, using the scanner and printer together as a photocppier.

Our office has an excellent, super-fast Xerox Phaser 860 DP printer. Our photocopier has died, and our scanner is old. So we're in the market for a new copier, and perhaps a scanner.

However, as I compare per page costs of inexpensive copiers, I find that the per page cost for the Phaser is as cheap or cheaper.

So I'm wondering if there's a way we can just buy a new, fast scanner, hook it to the network, and send the output straight to the printer?

I should mention we're a small office, and do very limited photocopying.

I think you're trying to use a hammer when you need an axe. I've tinkered with scanner/printer applications, and they're basically a pita. There is no way I know of to scan directly to a printer, you need an application to process the scanned image. Quite frankly, I'd buy one of the printer/scanner/copier combos that are so popular nowadays. If you don't do much copying, an inkjet model would probably suffice. As a bonus, you get a color copier option. I have an HP PSC-750 scanner/copier/printer, and it's pretty handy.

My latop has been turned itself off about 8 times today so I did a bit of reading on the forums and one of the things that was suggested was run the sfc /scannow command. The output says that it was unable to fix teh corrupted files that it had found and deposited the results of this scan in the CBS.log file.

A:results of my sfc /scannow scan saying can't fix corrupt files. Help!

To try and correct the shutdown problems
Run the SFC three times if errors are found. If they are not repaired, go to event viewer (type that in search, by the start menu) and go to the left panel, Administrative and look for errors.

Run a full anti virus scan
Download and run a full scan with malwarebytes.

Make sure that you are not overheating, shutting down is a classic symptom.
Download and run speed fan to check tempsl

If that does not help
Test memory

If nothing seems to help a repair install should do the trick, unless it is caused by hardware problems.

On opening the Task Scheduler I get a message " Task MP scheduled Scan. Task image is corrupt or has been tampered with ". I look in Library, Microsoft, Windows Defender and the Task MP Scheduler is not there. Real time protection appears to be working and I can do a manual scan through the control panel. Can I download a replacement Windows Defender file or can I fix what I have now without using Refresh or Recovery.

As an afterthought, is it possible to recreate the task in the library and please provide a snapshot of what it may look like

OK ladies and gentlemen, need some advice. My HP F380 has bit the dust, best all-in-one I have ever owned and had it for 8 years. I would like something like it as I need to be able to use the scanner and copier on occasion. I liked the fact I only had two cartridges to replace, one black, and one color. I do not need a photo type which requires four separate cartridges.

I'm almost positive this can be done under Windows Vista. I have a little HP all in one printer/fax/scanner. I have a receipt for tires I just bought. I want to scan the receipt, and somehow save it to the hard drive of my computer, or maybe the flash drive. I don't remember installing any software when I bought the printer, both the printer and my lap top are HP. I think this can be done just under Vista.

Normally with any scanner, you need to have the driver installed for the computer to recognize it. Usually the driver is located on the software disk and you can just locate the setup.exe. However, if it's an older scanner you will need to visit the HP site to look for a Vista driver for it. It may be called TWAIN driver. But by default, Vista will scan documents into your C:\Users\<username>\Documents\ directory.

In the past day, my computer has been very tempermental. I am running Vista Home Premium and have been for about 2 months without any issues. I run Avira Antivir and Kaspersky Internet Security in the background. I ran a full Kaspersky scan and have no issues. Antivir has not found anything either, except for HP false positives. When I run Ad-Aware and Spybot scans, nothing shows up. I also ran CCleaner to scrub temp files and registry. Also, a quick scan with MBAM was clean.

But when I try to run a full scan in MBAM or SuperAntiSpyware, the computer hangs. This usually happens when the screen saver kicks in. So I disabled the screen saver, but it still happens. I cannot access anything at that point and have to power off from the power supply (ctl alt delete won't work).

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thought it might have been problem with linksys software - pc locked up on a linksysfile. Removed/unistalled product; rebooted machine. Attempted Norton full scan - still received 0c2 abend. Approximately 5900 files are successfully scanned before it tanks.

Machine: Gateway GT5228
OS: Windows XP SP3

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Which Norton product and version do you currently have installed?

It sounds like there is a problem with the drivers on your system. Please follow the steps below to properly remove Norton. After you remove Norton, update all of the drivers on your system and then install the latest version of the Norton product for which you have a valid license.

1. Click on the following link to download the Norton Removal Tool:

2. After you run the tool, please restart your computer. Log into Windows again and run the removal tool again. Restart your computer after it is finished running the second time as well.
