Solved: Strong network signal but can’t connect

Q: Solved: Strong network signal but can’t connect

I just installed a D-Link wireless router (DI-524). The network shows up with a strong signal when I do a site survey from my laptop (Dell Latitude D400), but it wont connect to it. Ive tried connecting using both the PCs built-in wireless card and also the USB wireless adapter (DWL-G122) that came with the D-Link kit, with no luck. Other relevant facts:

--I have no trouble connecting to other networks with the built-in wireless card
--Tried changing my network's channel; didn't help
--Im sure I typed the WEP encryption key correctly
--Laptop is only 3 ft. from the router, no barriers or interfering devices present (2.4Mhz phone, monitor, etc.)
--Router has the latest firmware upgrade
--Tried several network mgt. utilities (Dells, D-Links AirPlus, Network Magic), including their repair network features

Im stumped. Can anyone suggest anything else I might try?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I've looked over some threads in this forum and have tried some things. When I typed ipconfig/renew in my cmd promt I got this error: An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket.

The computer is an Averatec Laptop, circa 2002, running Windows XP service pack 2. It's been in a drawer for 3 years waiting to go to a repair shop to possibly have it's screen replaced.

What else can I try to get this door stop back on the net?

Hello, I have 2 PCs in my home both running windows 7. My PC is directly receiving internet (10mb/s broadband). I have tried a few times to set up wireless for my mother who has her PC in the other room. The problem I have is that all though her PC recognizes the signal from my wireless, when I try hit connect, nothing happens and it gives me troubleshooting options.

The signal strength is excellent, I entered the WEP key manually to the correct KEY when adding a new connection which everything seems fine.

I can connect to my neighbours wireless fine, even though the signal isn't as good as my wireless.

I am using a NETGEAR Wireless-G Router WGR614.

My mothers PC is using a NETGEAR Wireless USB Adapter WG111v3.
I installed the driver for her USB and have tried the software provided to connect as well as windows 7.
Maybe I'm missing something simple?

I can't figure out why my desktop can't keep a network connection.

I have a wireless network (802.11g) at home, consisting of a desktop, laptop, and printer. It's been stable for almost three years, and I've had no connection issues until a few days ago. My desktop (which is about three months old and has been in the same location since I got it) started having internet connection problems about a week ago due to a "weak" network signal. Today, it started out fine, but as the day has progressed, it has degraded to the point that my desktop functionally has no connection to the network. It will see the network briefly but not be able to maintain a connection.

I don't believe the issue is with my router. Neither the laptop nor the printer are having problems. In fact, the printer is next to the desktop and works fine, and the laptop shows a very strong signal when placed near the desktop. I can only conclude that the problem is with the desktop.

However, I can't see what could be causing this. The wireless card (Gigabyte GN-WP01GS) came new with the PC. I've not installed any new software recently. There has been no change in furniture or appliances in my house. I live in a neighborhood of small houses and can pick up on, at most, three other networks in the neighborhood. I'm stumped.

Any recommendations on how to sleuth this?

It sounds like (or should I say reads like) you already did--the wireless card is the culprit. Overheating seems like a reasonable possibility given the gradual fading.

I have two desktops in the same room. Both are Dells running Windows XP. Computer A is attached to a Linksys Wireless G router. The cable modem is also plugged in to the router. Computer B has a Zoom Wireless G USB unit. The setup worked fine for several months. Now computer B says it has a strong signal, but it won't connect to the internet. I downloaded the latest driver from Zoom, installed it, and was able to get on to the internet for a few minutes. Then the connection was lost.

The next day I uninstalled the Zoom Wireless G USB unit, then reinstalled it. It worked for less than a day

Windows offers to check the network, but then can't do anything because it says Windows was not used to set up the network

I have a laptop that connects very easily to the network, so I am pretty sure it is something in the way computer 2 is set up.

I picked up a nasty virus over the wknd, but finally got it wiped & my pc is running normally, except for the internet. I cannot connect to it. It shows I have a strong signal, & I also have a LAN, but there is no communication between my laptop & internet. I've tried resetting winsock; ipconfig shows NO ip, & I continually receive a "unable to query host" error. I've checked drivers & reinstalled drivers on the network cards, downloaded MS Mr. Fixit tools, etc, all to no avail. I have not reloaded XP. I suspect there should be a quick & easy registry fix (I hope). Any help is appreciated.

Wireless network with two macs and one pc-- all was working great, with wpa2 protection-- but then changed to WEP (because my Olive Musica only uses WEP) and reconfigured the computers. But now only the macs work. The PC connects to the network and sometimes shows a strong signal and sometimes show limited connectivity, but in no case connects to the internet. And when I try to configure the pc it ultimately reverts back to the WPA and when it opens available networks it describes the network i use as a wpa network, even though i reconfigured the whole thing to wep!
If I sound like I know what I'm talking about, alas I do not. But I have tried opening, redoing, reading info, and everything else to get my pc back on board this wireless network.... but nothing seems to work.
What do you think? Thanks for any and all help. best, charlie

I am using a Linksys 2.4 ghz router in the basement of my house. On the second floor, I have a laptop. It is an iBook with an internal wireless card (airport), which has been receiving minimal signal upstairs. I thought it was just a dead spot, but I added a linksys usb adapter and the signal began clearly going from very strong to out of range every couple of seconds. Why is this changing so rapidly? How should I aim the router's antenna/ usb adapter for maximum range?

I should also note that i have 900 mhz cordless phone a few feet away and a 2.4 ghz phone about 30 feet from the laptop (both upstairs).

Ok, I've seen problems similiar to this but there resolutions have not worked for me. I'm running Win 2000 Pro and installed a Motorola wireless pci card that should connect to a Motorola wireless router. I have a computer running xp connected directly to the router and that works fine. The router settings are all correct, as per normal installation instructions. Here's the specific lowdown on the problem:

When you try to establish a connection, the network taskbar icon says that "network cable unplugged." The signal indicator for the wireless card says networks are available and lists the one on my router when I open it up, however, when I try to connect to it, nothing happens. The site monitor says that the signal is excellent. My winsock is fine. I have restarted all components several times. Tried it with and without WEP. Any help would be appreciated.

First time posting but have referred to old threads in the past - thanks to all. I have Windows XP (updated w/ SP2) on a compaq laptop with a Broadcom G-card (updated driver). I have DSL through SBC on a Speedstream 5100b. Finally, tried to hook up a wireless network with a Belkin 54g wireless router - I opted to do this manually and followed the steps carefully. If the laptop is directly plugged into one of the four router ports, I get internet access (through Explorer) with no problem (only when I have the router configured for dynamic connection, interestingly). However, if I unplug it and go wireless, despite an excellent signal I cannot access the internet. Initially set for WPA, but also tried WEP - still unable to browse.
By reading other threads I have some things to try (like maybe just restarting the laptop and hope for the best, disabling encryption, etc.) but is there a more logical approach to this? Thanks in advance!

OK, last night I was using my Toshiba L305-S5581 laptop that I purchased last week. I have been connecting to my 2Wire wireless modem fine all week. Slow, but fine. So, after searching some posts for speeding it up, I saw that it could be issues with either Mcafee or Norton. I had Norton, so I deleted it. Then I temporarily disabled my windows firewall. After I did those two things, I lost my connection. I have a strong signal from the wireless modem. However, I get a limited connectivity message. Im getting frustrated. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Additional information: I have attempted to hardwire to modem. Same issue. I am using Vista. Currently Im on my old laptop, which has no issues connecting nor does my wifes.

Hi. First of all, I'm not really good in networking stuff so I don't know many terms but I'll do my best to follow the instruction properly.

Now the problem: I'm using windows xp computer that connect internet with wireless usb adapter Aztech. It used to work properly with internet at home. Then one day, when I brought my pc back and forth from my uni and to my home, it suddenly not working. It said limited connection. I tried to dc and re-connect but it's still not working. So I found out that it is the IP address is the same as the default gateway so I change the gateway to the router address. Now it has strong signal but no internet.

So what should I do to get the internet back?

A:Solved: Strong signal but no internet, pc with wireless usb adapter

Try following this post from Johnwill in the order he suggests.

Some things you can try here, listed in the order you should try them.
For wireless connections, remove all the stored wireless profiles and search for networks. You'll have to enter the encryption key again, which is sometimes the issue for connection problems.
For wireless connections, change the channel on the router, I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.
For wireless connections, try moving either the wireless router/AP or the wireless computer. Even a couple of feet will sometimes make a big difference.
Update the network drivers (wired and wireless) on your computer to the latest available.
Update the firmware to the latest version available on the manufacturer's site.
Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.

Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues. __________________

Hi guys
I have already seen many threads with the same problem but none of the solutions worked for me.
I am unable to connect to my router (Beetel 450TC1) via wireless network. Even if I enter an incorrect security key, no authentication error is displayed. The wired connection works flawlessly and I can access router admin panel through wired connection. Things I have tried:
1) Called up the ISP customer care
They upgraded the router firmware, did a hard reset and did all settings remotely. This did not fix the problem and the executive reported that I have a faulty hardware. I think my hardware is fine because the same problem exists with other smartphone devices and I can connect to college WiFi easily.
2) Changed wireless security authentication and SSID.
3) Tried a manual hard reset and firmware downgrade (same problem persists with downgraded firmware) and again upgrade.
4) Tried different operating systems (Windows 8, Windows 7, Ubuntu 12.04). Same problem exists with each of them.

I think the problem lies with my WiFi router because the ISP executive did all required settings remotely.

Greetings all,

Hopefully my predicament will be a cinch for you...

I've an older, hand-me-down, laptop (thinkpad 1400). I simply got it to start learning about computers in the anticipation of upgrading.

The previous owner had installed xp home, and the system was slow as you can imagine. I reinstalled win2K, but since then, I have lost the ability of my wireless card. I thought maybe 2K didn't support a g card, so i reinstalled xp, and now and am unable to use the card with that system either. Something happened when I initially reinstalled win2k that will not allow the laptop to receive the ip from the router. I get a full strength signal, but no ip. When I hardwire via ethernet cable, I can get online, no problem.

I've been corresponding with tech support from the router/card manufacturer, and it has been determined that those components are not to blame (I proved this myself configuring another laptop with my equipment; problem-free)

Microsoft has sent me a few hotfixes, XP sp2 specific, although this was a problem before I dwnloaded sp2.

So, I think when I 'downgraded' back to 2K from the XP installation, something got fried or deleted that allowed the router/card to assign the ip to the laptop.

I've nothing to lose with this laptop, but a whole lot to learn in the meantime...

Hey guys! Well I just recently got my computer back from Gateway. I sent it off to them because I was having overheating issues. Well they fixed that by replacing the cpu and fans. But now that I have it back I'm not getting a very good signal from my wireless router. I'm one room away from the router and it use to be full bars...Now I'm at a steady 2 bars, signal strength poor. I used to be able to pick up probably 20 networks that were close to me. Now I don't pick up any of those, just my own. I'm wondering what the heck happened! I've tried restoring my system but it didn't do anything. Also, if I go to Control panel and click on diagnose wireless adapter it will say it fixes it, and then a bunch of networks pop up, all good strength, even mine will have full bars for about 30 seconds, then boom, all the other networks dissappear and mine goes clear down to 2 bars!! So any ideas what's going on with this thing, and how can I fix it??

This problem has been persisting for a while now, ever since I set up wireless home network. I have have a WRT150N Linksys Router that gives off a perfectly strong and reliable signal I have the computer in my office effectively hardwired from the router and the computer in my son's room is connected to the network as well. For whatever reason, other than my son's computer, no other device will to the network. My phone, wii, and laptop all recognize the signal as being strong, but none of them will actually connect to the signal. I have considered that maybe the chimney which is in the center of the living room may be scrambling the signal, and my son's room is not in line with the chimney. Any other ideas or suggestions?

So this started a couple days ago after i did a full re-installation of windows 7, as i do from time to time.
I got all my drivers up to date without any errors or issues. There has been no alteration to the surroundings so i can not believe there is any interference.

I have a
Belkin N600 DB

I used to receive at least 1-3mb of download speed. Im lucky if i get 200kb which is pointless to even come online with.

I changed the channels some are worse than others but it doesn't get better.

I usually get to 50mbs now its not even close, uploads the same.

A:Strong Signal, Bad Connection

Your numbers are a little inconsistent. You show 15 Mbps, but say "used to receive at least 1-3mb" and "usually get to 50mbs." 15 Mbps seems typical for cable service in the US.

i have just found out that my wifi signal is being seen all over my estate all though i have wpa security turned on and i have just turned off broadcast ssid i would like to turn the strength of the router down if that is possible.it is a belkin54g.cant think of the mn at this moment.

A:wifi signal too strong.

if it has WPA on it, what's the problem? In a few routers I have used there is a power level, usually 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. Don't worry about it, no-one can hack WPA, consider WPA2 if your router and clients can support it for the extra safe touch.

Hello there,
I need help with this brand new Acer laptop. It has only been used 4 times including this one. When opening either mozilla or chrome soon a 'Strong Signal' add appears either side of the browser.
I have already run MBAM, antispyware and adwcleaner, still these appear in the browser.
Also, whenever I click on a link it is redirected to annoying adds.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

How many wireless device are your network?
does your wireless network have encryption on it?
How many people use it?

If to many people are on the same device it can get congested and the connectivity and reliability can drop significantly.

I have never seen anythibg like this before so I figured I'd ask someone with a little more experience. Does anyone know why this happens? Could it be the network card? Drivers?

Hey there, guys. So, after I came home from boarding school for the weekend, I noticed my browser was infested with ads. Annoying redirections, pop-ups, and simply ads all over. They all are labeled with "strong signal" or "powered by strong signal", and some with "Buzzdock ads". I was already familiar with Strong Signal, and found out it was being caused by a programm with the same name, which would keep adding "Strong Signal" to my Google Chrome extensions. I deleted it, aswell as the extension.
I thought I was free, but just a few hours later, I noticed I wasn't. And it got worse. More ads, and I get redirected with about every third click I make. I checked over and over again through my programms, but none of them are sketchy/adware. I rummaged through my Chrome extensions, and the problem isn't there either. I've got absolutely no clue as to where these ads might be comming from.
Every page on the internet I've found about this matter, tells me to uninstall "Strong Signal" from my computer and remove it from my extensions, but I've done that, and it continues. Some help would be very appreciated. If you need any more information of my machine, please do post.
I'm very grateful for every bit of help and advice.
- Your ving
P.S.: I have AdBlockPlus on google chrome, but it fails to block the Strong Signal and Buzzdock ads!
EDIT: I realized just now I posted this in the wrong forum, and don't know how to delete it. Please move it to ... Read more

I'm using a laptop and desktop side by side connecting to a router by LAN cable and wireless. The desktop computer connects, by cable, thru the router to the internet without problem, but about 3 weeks ago my laptop stopped getting an internet connection. The computer is connecting to the router but no further.
I have spent the last few weeks checking cables, reinstalling drivers and trying plug in cable LAN cards to no avail. At the start of the problem I connected to the internet by dialup and although I appeared to connect there was no communication.
I have currently installed a Realtek RTL8139/810X family fast ethernet NIC, Intel Pro/wireless 2200BG and a Netgear FA410TX Fast ethernet PC Card.
The IP addresses on the laptop all start with 169 and I have tried to renew thru the command prompt but I get the message "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket"
I'm confused as I appear to connect by several means but get no communication, any one got any ideas?

Hello Everybody,

I just got a job at a School district that has an extremly old and basic network setup (No Firewall, only 2 accounts on the server Student and Teacher). They have two small buildings that have 1 wireless router on each floor about in the middle of the hallway.

I am having a strange issue I haven't seen before with a windows 7 laptop that a few of the teachers in the district are having. They can see the wireless router on the network but everytime they try and connect it says "Windows Cannot Connect or is Denied Access". All the other laptops in the building connect fine.

Heres what I have done so far.

-Power cycled the router, nothing.
-ipconfig /release, and renew, nothing.
-Getting closer to the router and connecting, nothing. (Also tried with a differant laptop in the room and it could connect no problem which confused me more)
-Updating the network card.(says it has the latest updates)
-Re-entering the network key, nothing

What I haven't tried is setting up manually a static IP. But do I need to do that? And if so how do I know which IP to give it is there a way I can generate a list of all the IP's on the network?

I appreciate any help, I AM STUMPED!

I have a strong wireless connection but no Internet connection. I tried turning off the Norton Interent Security Firewall temporarily and tried to connect - with no luck. Strangely enough, I have turned off my computer, disconnected the power supply, restarted the computer and I get an initial web page (Google) but then it craps out again (and not even that works now). I ran the Norton Securities to check for malware and all it found was one cookie (subsequently deleted). My computer uses the HP wireless connection system. I have tried disconnecting from the Wireless network and re-connecting, again with no luck. I don't know if this means anything, but another guy in my office started experiencing the same problem about one day before I did. I'm going to ask our IT person if my computer has been somehow blocked by the server here. OK, that's all I have. Can someone please help me?

A:Wireless: Strong Signal, no Connection!

I would not normally do this, howver, in this case
I would suggest you goto your IT department as this is a company setup and someone else has the same problem, it will be difficult to diagnose as you will not have access to the routers, infrastructure, hubs etc
