Preferred Solution: SSD Cleaning in ThinkPad

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yes, it will delete all your data if SSD used in your system is FDE drive , as this software uses the mechanism to reset the Cryptographic Key used for encrypting the data.

What is FDE cryptographic erase?
"Each FDE drive has a unique encryption key, through which the data is processed real time as it is saved to the media. Each FDE drive saves different bit patterns to the media given the same original data, while non-FDE drives save the same bit patterns to the media. The cryptographic key is also used to decrypt the data. If the encryption key is changed in any way, all data on the drive becomes useless bits. The only way to read the data again would be to restore the originating encryption key."

So its pretty safe to use this software for cleaning your system SSD.

I hope the above information helped you & update us how it goes.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and this is my first post here, I hope anyone can help me. I recently bought refurbised Lenovo ThinkPad X1 model 1294-A2Y and everything worked fine until I opened it. The reason for opening was looking for battery info, since the battery I got with the laptop was bad and I wanted to replace it. Here's what I did, i opened all as instructed, unscrewd all the parts, take the keyboard off but i didn't touch the processor cooling system. Than I put it all back together. When I pushed the power on button nothing happened, the laptop won't turn on. Than i tare it apart again, plug the battery and the power cord off and pressed the power on button for 20 seconds. After pluging the battery and the power cord laptop started fine, but the problem is that it works only for a few minutes and than turns off all of a sudden. And than it won't start again, and I need to tare all apart in order to turn it off again. Did anyone had a similar situation? Can anyone help me with this? Thank you in advance

Hi, Everyone. Got me a nice little x270 to replace my old x201.  Happy enough with the machine, but getting it connected to my accessories (monitor, keyb, mouse, ethernet) is a bit of a chore. This machine appears to have a "proper" dock port on the bottom.  Is there a compatible ultradock available for the model 20HN x270?  By proper - I mean, Not USB.  A nice dock I can simply drop the machine into when I'm at the home office.. Thanks!

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

I bought a used IBM Thinkpad T20 Thinkpad Type 2647-92U from eBay for use this semester on campus. It is in great shape and has a recent edition of Windows XP but an older version of MS Office which does not boot properly.

This computer was a part of a network and keeps trying to connect to it each time Windows loads. It came with a LinkSys Wireless-G Notebook Adapter 2.4 GHz 802.11g card.

The CD is an official copy; clean and has no scratches or nicks. The DVD/CD-ROM will boot other CD's such as music CD's and DVD films and data discs with MS Word files etc on them.

Any help would be appreciated!

Yours,

Kyklopes

I've checked, none of the pins are touching. I disassembled the laptop to see if there is something suspicious at the back of the USB, unfortunately everything looks ok. Is there anything else that I have to do with this USB or probably I have an issue with the motherboard? Thanks in advance Kind Regards.Simeon

I recently purchased a T460 with an Ultradock 90w and when the notebook is docked it only shows battery 1 (internal) as charging. Battery 2 is not being used but it is not charging either and it is very very slowly discharging (about 3% over the last few days). If I plug the Thinkpad into its normal power supply outside of the dock both batteries charge (one at a time). Is this normal behavior or is there something wrong with my dock?

I have recently bought a Thinkpad Yoga 460 with Thinkpad Pen Pro. I leave it in the laptop slot for charging for more than a day and it gives me only a few minutes of usage. As per the user guide, it should be 80% charge in 15 seconds and 100% after 5 minutes. But it runs out of charge very soon. It shows me the low battery level indicator as soon as I use it on the screen. First day of usage (appox 4 days ago) it gave me about 30 - 45 minutes of continuous. But after that not more than 5 minutes. Please let me know if this is an issue with the Pen or Laptop charging port. Is there any way I can troubleshoot it?Please also let me know the average usage time for the pen, if you are continuously using it.

Hi
Welcome to the forums.

I do not have that kind of pen, but I think is the one that has some "bronce contacts" at the top of the pen. I had read some other post about it, just in case check that "contacts" to make sure they are touching with the charger when you put the pen into it's holder. Sometimes the contacts may move.

Hi All, I'm considering buying a new Lenovo ThinkPad laptop. I can't decide between the ThinkPad P50 or ThinkPad T560. I currently have a T500; had this since 2009. Its worked well apart from three screens replaced under warranty, as they failed. I've checked out other machines (eg Dell XPS, HP Envy etc). I'm still drawn to having another ThinkPad. As Lenovo is shocking when it comes to being able to see a machine to check out before you buy (very poor service in this respect unless you want to buy 200 machines), I haven't been able to look at either the P50 or T560. I've looked at reviews on the internet, but you can't touch the machines. Which is considered the better machine to buy; the P50 or the T560? I travel a lot on business overseas, so the quality of build and durability needs to be good. The laptop needs to be reliable (ie no issues with the screen). I want to future proof the laptop with a high spec (16GB, 512 GB SSB/ 1TB?, high spec processor, etc ability to upgrade etc). I want the laptop and keyboard to be good quality; no flex etc. I sometimes present to small groups using my laptop, so screen size should be suitable for this. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Cheers  Jamie

I just bought a Thinkpad Yoga from Best Buy and upon opening, found that the pen pro included does not work. I'm on the most updated version of all the drivers, and the touch screen and multitouch with my hands still work. After taking an multimeter to measure the voltage of the pen, I found that the pen just wasn't charging. I'm a bit hesitant to check the voltage of the charging silo itself but my suspicion is that the pen is dead. Could this be a software problem? Has anyone encountered a similar problem? Should I return to pen and the laptop to bestbuy or just the pen? Or should this issue be brought to Lenovo instead?

A:Thinkpad Yoga 460 (Best Buy) - Thinkpad Pro Pen do...

I don't have a 460, but I do have a 260, which is a smaller, but VERY similar machine.  I had the same problem and I believe it is not the pen.  Before you do anything, you need to unplug the machine and disable the internal battery.  You do that by going into the BIOS and under the config tab, look under power.  There will be an option to disable the battery.  When this is selected, the machine will turn off.  The battery is re-enabled the next time you plug it in.  IF THE BATTERY IS NOT DISCONNECTED, YOU WILL CREATE A SHORT AND BLOW A IRREPLACEABLE FUSE ON THE MOTHERBOARD.  Remove the pen and look inside, where you will see 2 contacts.  My guess is that one or both got pushed back into the housing during manufacturing process.  You can take something fine and sharp like a needle and gently free them so they will pop back out.  Once I popped mine out, the pen charged very quickly and I never had another problem with it.

I am hhaving difficulty finding an acceptable scaling mix between resolution, system scaling, and edge scaling. At 1080p, 125%, 125%, os navigation is mostly fine, but edge text is way too large. At 1080p, 125%, 100%, edge text is way too small. At all combinations text is inflated (but crisp) in certain elements while fuzzy in others. What scaling combinations work best for you? I am considering returning this to Best Buy and upgrading to a Pro 4 / Book, or even a Mac. The scaling is ruining an otherwise great experience.

A:Cleaning - HT Log

Oh I forgot to add.. Whenever I start up windows, actually right after I log on, I get 2 error messages about Windows Media Player.

"Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\services\wmplayer.exe' Make sure you typed in the name correctly... blah blah"

Then another immediately after that about the registry

"Could not load or run 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\services\wmplayer.exe' specified in the directory.."

If anyone could help me fix these it would be appreciated. I don't mind pressing enter twice after I log on, but I would rather not have to. Thanks!

Anyone?

Any ideas on how to clean properly the PC fans, they kinda starting to grind.
Thanks

A:Fan Cleaning

You can get one of those PC compressed air dusters. They work nice. They don't get off the deep dust but they got off the majority.

And you can always wipe the blades off with a damp towel.

Hello there and welcome to Bleeping Computer's security forum. My name is David, I will be helping you with your log today. It is a good idea to print off these instructions:This will be useful as there is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available. You may also like to save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above. A print out of the instructions would be a good reference to make sure you don't yet lost. Also, it is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and also that you don't miss any steps out!If you have any queries about the process or just general questions, just ask.I don't see anything major in this log, just a few small things to patch up.WeatherBug is a system tray icon that offers weather information and includes built-in ads. WeatherBug is controlled by AWS Convergence Technologies. There is some controversy over whether WeatherBug should be targeted by anti-parasite software. AWS strongly deny their software is ?spyware?, and by the definition used here, it is not, as it does not leak information back to its controlling servers. However, WeatherBug has in the past been silently installed by the FavoriteMan parasite and Freeze.com screensavers, and more recently has been bundled by software such as AIM and Blubster. Ok, I tried this on my own without success. I have a laptop that is running XP and Panda 2007. When the computer starts, Panda finds and says it is deleting a number of files (dload.exe, x.exe, startpage.aao, kernel64 among others). But they keep coming back. Also, an icon keeps popping up that is associated with antispyware soldier. I have rebooted in safe mode and run the Panda scan and all of the files listed above are deleted. I have also downloaded and run SmitfraudFix, combofix and killbox and they all report that the files have been deleted. But they keep coming back when I reboot in regular mode.(Moderator edit: log post moved to HJT log Forum for team analysis and member assistance. My IBM Thinkpad T60 gets pretty hot so it burns my legs. I should
no doubt take the back off and vaccuum it for dust inside. Are there
any pitfalls with this? Can I critically unscrew the wrong screws?

A:Cleaning a T60

You're risking trashing that laptop by taking it apart and using a vacuum cleaner on it.

It may be getting hot because it's sitting on your lap/legs and not on a hard flat surface, so it's not venting out hot air properly.

I tried to post all of this under my previous thread and I got 'blocked' while trying to add the FRST Additional text report...so I'm starting a new thread to see if I can get the assistance I need.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

I am just wondering if anyone had a good idea of how to clean the bottom air grills. Mine has this ultra fine dust I can't seem to remove with air. Tried to blow it out from the inside, outside, etc. Tempted to take the cover, and soak it in a sink with mild soap at this point! It just looks so dusty, so... ew. Also, wanna clean the top of the housing, I presume it's called the basel. Where the [crappy] mouse sits, etc.

Hi Hazarath ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Your hardware manual have detailed steps on removing base cover but since opening the laptop may take advance steps , take note of your warranty coverage and better yet to inform technical support as anything that would get damage in the process may void it.

Hope this help answer your query.

Now, I know how to clean most parts (CPU heatsink, how to apply new thermal paste, how to clean out other heatsinks, how to clean out motherboard, how to clean out graphics card, etc.), EXCEPT the powersupply.

Say that a lot of dust has become trapped in there - what do I do? I dont want to buy a new power supply because it is pretty beefy, and although old, still has enough power for my pc (my pc prolly uses 60% of the actual rating).

(Note: this is a fake story. I just want to know for the future )

The best way is to open it up and clean it out. remove the PSU from the computer case. Remove the four (or howerer many there are) screws on the PSU case remove the top of the PSU case and clean the heatsinks and fans inside. Whatever you do don't touch the leads on the capacitors it hurts alot (anyone say electrical burn).

<font face="Comic Sans MS" color=0099FF><b>First off, I just hope this isn't one of those over-ased annoying questions, and I'm not annoying you all.. Anyways, I'm having a bit of trouble with my CD-Rom. I put a CD in, close it, and nothing happens. Doesn't show up in "My Computer", no autorun, nothing. The light blinks a lot though, so I guess it still works? I was looking through some of the other threads, and some of you suggested making a boot disk and trying the CD-Rom from DOS. I tried that, and it still didn't recognize it. Now, I just got this computer in January or so, so it's not that old, so I don't think the CD-Rom is "dying" or whatever. So anyways, I was just wondering, if there's a way to "clean" it. Like, how would I physically take the thing out, and clean it? I don't have much experience with that sort of thing, so should I take it in to a shop and have them do it? Or what? Any help is appreciated.

Sure do, first thing I see is you need the critical updates for XP and IE. Why not wander on over to microsoft.com and pick those up while I review the rest of you log.

I saw a thread for a guy who's system was real sluggish & they told him to clean up the programs that start up and take memory but aren't used. I tried eliminating some of the programs that I could identify but this didn't improve performance much. I was wondering if someone might have some additional suggestions. I'd appreciate any help that you can provide!!! Thanks in advance!

Recently I had a FakeavAlert Trojan and it was attracting a lot of crap. I saw a post about it that incited me to DL Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MAM). I used it and it cleared the virus right up (btw I'm extremely greatfull), but I also started to look in to the Hijackthis program to make sure I had cleared it all out and nothing got damaged. I'm not sure how to interpret what it's putting out and since it sounds like a small mistake could accidentally delete important stuff I'm looking for some interp on that area. If you have some advice or could help me read its log I would really appreciate!

I must have some massive files/folders that are taken up alot of space but I don't know how to find them? Can any one help? Thanks!
