Preferred Solution: SSD Cleaning in ThinkPad

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yes, it will delete all your data if SSD used in your system is FDE drive , as this software uses the mechanism to reset the Cryptographic Key used for encrypting the data.

What is FDE cryptographic erase?
"Each FDE drive has a unique encryption key, through which the data is processed real time as it is saved to the media. Each FDE drive saves different bit patterns to the media given the same original data, while non-FDE drives save the same bit patterns to the media. The cryptographic key is also used to decrypt the data. If the encryption key is changed in any way, all data on the drive becomes useless bits. The only way to read the data again would be to restore the originating encryption key."

So its pretty safe to use this software for cleaning your system SSD.

I hope the above information helped you & update us how it goes.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and this is my first post here, I hope anyone can help me. I recently bought refurbised Lenovo ThinkPad X1 model 1294-A2Y and everything worked fine until I opened it. The reason for opening was looking for battery info, since the battery I got with the laptop was bad and I wanted to replace it. Here's what I did, i opened all as instructed, unscrewd all the parts, take the keyboard off but i didn't touch the processor cooling system. Than I put it all back together. When I pushed the power on button nothing happened, the laptop won't turn on. Than i tare it apart again, plug the battery and the power cord off and pressed the power on button for 20 seconds. After pluging the battery and the power cord laptop started fine, but the problem is that it works only for a few minutes and than turns off all of a sudden. And than it won't start again, and I need to tare all apart in order to turn it off again. Did anyone had a similar situation? Can anyone help me with this? Thank you in advance

Hello,

Could someone please help me clean up what has become a very slow computer? I must have too many programmes automatically starting up and running because it now takes an age to boot up and when it finally does windows take an age to load and the internet seems to run very slowly. I don't think it is a memory issue because I have over 50GB of free space. Another issue is that Internet explorer often crashes and closes all open windows with an error message.

I am posting a Hijackthis log so you can see what's running. I only really use the internet, itunes and manage photos etc. so I think there is a lot of superfluous activity which I'd love to get rid of...

Hi, Everyone. Got me a nice little x270 to replace my old x201.  Happy enough with the machine, but getting it connected to my accessories (monitor, keyb, mouse, ethernet) is a bit of a chore. This machine appears to have a "proper" dock port on the bottom.  Is there a compatible ultradock available for the model 20HN x270?  By proper - I mean, Not USB.  A nice dock I can simply drop the machine into when I'm at the home office.. Thanks!

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

I bought a used IBM Thinkpad T20 Thinkpad Type 2647-92U from eBay for use this semester on campus. It is in great shape and has a recent edition of Windows XP but an older version of MS Office which does not boot properly.

This computer was a part of a network and keeps trying to connect to it each time Windows loads. It came with a LinkSys Wireless-G Notebook Adapter 2.4 GHz 802.11g card.

The CD is an official copy; clean and has no scratches or nicks. The DVD/CD-ROM will boot other CD's such as music CD's and DVD films and data discs with MS Word files etc on them.

Any help would be appreciated!

Yours,

Kyklopes

Hi guys, I found this forum very helpful   and I hope someone has a solution for my issue also. I have read everything about that kind of problems and what I found is that one of my usb ports isn't working. I've checked, none of the pins are touching. I disassembled the laptop to see if there is something suspicious at the back of the USB, unfortunately everything looks ok. Is there anything else that I have to do with this USB or probably I have an issue with the motherboard? Thanks in advance Kind Regards.Simeon

I recently purchased a T460 with an Ultradock 90w and when the notebook is docked it only shows battery 1 (internal) as charging. Battery 2 is not being used but it is not charging either and it is very very slowly discharging (about 3% over the last few days). If I plug the Thinkpad into its normal power supply outside of the dock both batteries charge (one at a time). Is this normal behavior or is there something wrong with my dock?

I have recently bought a Thinkpad Yoga 460 with Thinkpad Pen Pro. I leave it in the laptop slot for charging for more than a day and it gives me only a few minutes of usage. As per the user guide, it should be 80% charge in 15 seconds and 100% after 5 minutes. But it runs out of charge very soon. It shows me the low battery level indicator as soon as I use it on the screen. First day of usage (appox 4 days ago) it gave me about 30 - 45 minutes of continuous. But after that not more than 5 minutes. Please let me know if this is an issue with the Pen or Laptop charging port. Is there any way I can troubleshoot it?Please also let me know the average usage time for the pen, if you are continuously using it.

Hi
Welcome to the forums.

I do not have that kind of pen, but I think is the one that has some "bronce contacts" at the top of the pen. I had read some other post about it, just in case check that "contacts" to make sure they are touching with the charger when you put the pen into it's holder. Sometimes the contacts may move.

I just bought a Thinkpad Yoga from Best Buy and upon opening, found that the pen pro included does not work. I'm on the most updated version of all the drivers, and the touch screen and multitouch with my hands still work. After taking an multimeter to measure the voltage of the pen, I found that the pen just wasn't charging. I'm a bit hesitant to check the voltage of the charging silo itself but my suspicion is that the pen is dead. Could this be a software problem? Has anyone encountered a similar problem? Should I return to pen and the laptop to bestbuy or just the pen? Or should this issue be brought to Lenovo instead?

A:Thinkpad Yoga 460 (Best Buy) - Thinkpad Pro Pen do...

I don't have a 460, but I do have a 260, which is a smaller, but VERY similar machine.  I had the same problem and I believe it is not the pen.  Before you do anything, you need to unplug the machine and disable the internal battery.  You do that by going into the BIOS and under the config tab, look under power.  There will be an option to disable the battery.  When this is selected, the machine will turn off.  The battery is re-enabled the next time you plug it in.  IF THE BATTERY IS NOT DISCONNECTED, YOU WILL CREATE A SHORT AND BLOW A IRREPLACEABLE FUSE ON THE MOTHERBOARD.  Remove the pen and look inside, where you will see 2 contacts.  My guess is that one or both got pushed back into the housing during manufacturing process.  You can take something fine and sharp like a needle and gently free them so they will pop back out.  Once I popped mine out, the pen charged very quickly and I never had another problem with it.

Hi All, I'm considering buying a new Lenovo ThinkPad laptop. I can't decide between the ThinkPad P50 or ThinkPad T560. I currently have a T500; had this since 2009. Its worked well apart from three screens replaced under warranty, as they failed. I've checked out other machines (eg Dell XPS, HP Envy etc). I'm still drawn to having another ThinkPad. As Lenovo is shocking when it comes to being able to see a machine to check out before you buy (very poor service in this respect unless you want to buy 200 machines), I haven't been able to look at either the P50 or T560. I've looked at reviews on the internet, but you can't touch the machines. Which is considered the better machine to buy; the P50 or the T560? I travel a lot on business overseas, so the quality of build and durability needs to be good. The laptop needs to be reliable (ie no issues with the screen). I want to future proof the laptop with a high spec (16GB, 512 GB SSB/ 1TB?, high spec processor, etc ability to upgrade etc). I want the laptop and keyboard to be good quality; no flex etc. I sometimes present to small groups using my laptop, so screen size should be suitable for this. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Cheers  Jamie

I am hhaving difficulty finding an acceptable scaling mix between resolution, system scaling, and edge scaling. At 1080p, 125%, 125%, os navigation is mostly fine, but edge text is way too large. At 1080p, 125%, 100%, edge text is way too small. At all combinations text is inflated (but crisp) in certain elements while fuzzy in others. What scaling combinations work best for you? I am considering returning this to Best Buy and upgrading to a Pro 4 / Book, or even a Mac. The scaling is ruining an otherwise great experience.

Hey all. I'm in an internet cafe and noticed that their computers aren't that fast and they have a lot of instabilities. So, I decided to ask the owner if I could upgrade a few things (Such as to Service Pack 2, Motherboard Bio's, Video Card Drivers, Sound Card Drivers, etc) and I'm also planning to install some cleaning applications such as TuneUp Utilities, Ad-Aware, Spybot, Registry Cleaner, System Mechanic, etc.

well for starters the bios upgrade really wouldn't be nessesary unless you really wanted to take advantage of the new features or whatever. It all depends on what these computers store on them. ccleaner is a good one, but you should really be careful before cleaning out these computers, just in case there are stored passwords or legitamate bookmarks, certificates, plugins and stuff. the log looks fine. the search bars, hotkeys, and other stuff is unnecessary, but they might serve a legitimate buisness purpose.

The utility that is originally installed says that it needs attention as it is running slow....not real noticeably so to me, but not real savy if you know what I mean. Joined the forum to learn how to care for it and keep it clean without going through Norton. I am using Microsoft Security Essentials as my primary defense and run an adware once a week.

I have a Dell Demension 8200 with an 80GB hdd. I'm now down to 50GB free space. Is there an easy way to find the really huge files, other than Add/Remove Program, that are taking up so much memory on the computer. I would like to get my hdd down to 10GB of used space or below.

I must have some massive files/folders that are taken up alot of space but I don't know how to find them? Can any one help? Thanks!

I will move this to the HijackThis Log Help category. Please post the log next time instead of attaching it.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you m... Read more

Hello and Welcome to TSF!

Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of fixes as soon as they are posted.

Before we start, I want you to understand one thing first. You have a very bad infection which is very difficult to remove. It requires a lot of work - both from you & me together. I'm gonna request for your full cooperation during such time. You should not at any time skip any of the steps outlined herewith nor do any of the fix outside out the order as I've laid out. Doing so may render the fix to be ineffective

Please take note of any problems you encounter during the fix & post them when you have completed the fix.

You do not appear to have an anti-virus application installed on this machine. Let's start off by getting you a free but yet effective antivirus program. Please choose one from any of these 3 programs which are free for home use: AVG Anti-Virus
Avast Home Edition
BitDefender Free Edition v7

Please download these additional files/programs. Do not run them untill instructed to do so.
Unless otherwise stated, they should be stored in same directory as the HiJackThis program.

I recently had help cleaning my notebook and now need to clean my PC (yeah I still have one of those in the den).

I first need to recover my Administrator password...although as HOME, I can right-click and run programs as administrator, but I created the Administrator account on the advice of a different forum to be able to run the cleaning utilities (they never once said to 'right-click and run as administrator.

I tried to post all of this under my previous thread and I got 'blocked' while trying to add the FRST Additional text report...so I'm starting a new thread to see if I can get the assistance I need.

Spybot cleaned a few things, then said everything was clear. I am being attacked by yield manager popups and while I was running ad aware and house call by microtrend, Norton picked up 21 alerts for trojan downloaders and trojan.byte verify. Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hello and welcome to TSF

I recommend you Subscribe to this thread so you are notified of any replies via email. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

There isn't much showing in your log, so we'll try a general cleaning and see what turns up.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Downloads(make sure to save these in a permanent location)
Cleanup!- Install it. You will use this later.

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does not make backups.

Ewido Anti-SpywareInstall Ewido Anti-Spyware
Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files. On the top of the main screen click Shield
Click the word active to change it to inactive
On the top of the main screen click Update.
Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
I also recommend changing the "Update interval" to something more reasonable like 12 hours.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido
When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.

My computer is running a lot slower these days which i suspect is because of some virus or other.
have used the various software to try cleaning it up but does not really help.

The thing is i am planning to buy a new pc and intend to give this one to a family member, so i want to clean all the crap from it. And yes, i have visited the odd porn site or two so really want to clean it properly

Is formatting the drive the best way to clean this up?

thanks

A:cleaning my pc

reformatting the harddrive is oneway of getting rin of all th eprograms you have installed and giving the PC to the new owner clean.
However,
Make sure you have all the programs you want to be able to run on the PC.
Also make sure you have all the drivers - sound/video/modem/ etc etc

this online scan will tell you whats on the PC
http://www.d-a-l.com/hardware-scan.php
this wil do the same but need to be installed
http://www.belarc.com/

OR

download and run
Ad-Aware
Download and run
Spybot

see link in my sig for those prgrams

then

post a hjt log

HIJACK THIS:

Download and copy hijackthis [should be version 1.99.1] to its own folder , it makes backups so keeping them separate and available can be useful.
SO DO NOT put hjt onto the desktop or temp files.

create a directory say my documents/hjt

Note the Spyware tools websites are very often under attack and so I have provided more than 1 location to download from:

Hello TechWizards,

I have been doing some computer cleaning up, basically trying to get my machine to run faster and more secure.

I have been online researching helpful software and I found out about HiJackThis. I downloaded the sofware and I have ran the scan to get a log. I am wondering if someone could take a look at my log, and see if there is any malware installed. Thanks.

Also I use to have a kodak camera, and there is alot of programs showing as installed on my machine currently that I want to get removed to free up space.

I have attempted to remove the items using the windows uninstall program as well as a gary utilities program, Absolute uninstaller, but it has been unsuccessful.

If someone can help, I will be thankful.

I will post my log below the line

Can anyone help me with this problem?A couple of times,I've got the message "Cleaning up,do not turn off your computer".The first time it happened,I had closed the lid on my laptop which put it to sleep, and on opening the lid,I got the message.I left it for half an hour and then decided to force shutdown. The second time,I had just installed a Windows Update and on restarting,I got the message. My laptop is a Samsung NP550P5C-A08UK running Windows 8.

A:Cleaning up.

My disk cleanup manager would go what seemed like forever and ever. I learned quickly not to cancel it. Cancelled it the first time thinking it was hung.. ended up with some errors that took too much time to straighten out.

Did you ever run the system clean up ?? I think once I did that disk clean up became much more tolerable time-wise. But still slow compared to win7.
