Thinkpad P51 odd fan start sound

Q: Thinkpad P51 odd fan start sound

Hi all, I have a question about my Thinkpad P51 (20hh0014rt). The system is pretty quiet at all, but I found that CPU fan (the right one) produce some kind of odd sound when it start to spin: I hear it like some quiet sneeze, or something like loud "Pffffff".I attached audio example and also here is the Clyp link. Phisically it looks like the fan start to spin at full speed and immediately slow down to lower speed. Could some of P51 owners or may be Lenovo guys tell me if this is a normal behaviour for this system or I have a problem? Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi I am facing the following strange problem. Please let me know what am doing wrong.

On board speakers not working suddenly( was working fine a day back).
Did a mute(using the button in the keyboard) and then tried unmuting but no sound.
However my microphones are working. My friends can hear me in yahoo/gtalk.

Steps Tried already:-
1)Checked for mute in volume controls. Not muted.
2) Tried "Test Hardware" in laptop. I can see the green light working fine(it goes up and down) in playback but again no sound that I can hear.
3) Checked for drivers of sound and audio. No errors(no yelllo). The device(Sound Max Audio) is enabled and it says working fine.
4) Tried "System Restore" to 2 days before but again no sound.
5) Tried using headphones no sound again.

What could be the problem?Any ideas. I will update this thread with some more info if i do any..In the meanwhile if anyone can help me it would be great.

A:IBM Thinkpad T43 - no sound

Well here's your Audio driver (for Xp): http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/license.do?filename=mobiles/1ya210ww.exe
Note: Vista driver for audio is located at Windows Update, custom.

You could try uninstalling your currently installed audio driver (say, Add\Remove programs)

Then install the above.

This could also be Virus\Spyware activity. Have a look at:

Got a strange problem, when I try to record sound on my thinkpad 560z I can't get any sound to the speakers.

Does this make sense to anyone?

Any suggestions on what the problem might be?

I have no sound on ThinkPad T520 except at headphone jack, Win 10 version 1607 OS build14393.351, I have a ThinkPad T420 with Win 10 version 1607, OS build 14393.447 the T420 has sound from speakers and headphone jack. I have the latest Conexant driver in the T520, I have done all the "problem solvers" i can find online and nothing works. Is this a software problem or equipment problem.

A:No sound on Thinkpad T520

Troubleshooting Thinkpad audio - You have described a hardware problem with the T520. Download the hardware manual from Lenovo and determine if the headphone jack is part of a replaceable assembly and replace it if so. If the headphone jack is part of the system board the problem is more complicate to repair. You can go to Lenovo's site, plug in the full model number, like 5170-339, and locate the hardware manual--Lenovo's forum is the best place for help with a ThinkPad.

A:Sound Driver for IBM Thinkpad T42

ibm / lenova has a very easy site to find info on, and, in that YOU have the info needed,
start with this:

Finding my product number (machine type / model or part number) and serial number

User's guides and manuals

Support & downloads

download them then 'burn' them to a cd for backup, 'cause if you needed them once, you will need them again

this one's a though one I think..

Few months ago, I bought a IBM thinkpad 600E laptop. I received it running under Windows XP and everything was working fine, even the sound. Right after that, I reformatted it into Windows 2k for performance purpose (it's only a PII 450 Mhz!!) and I then loose the sound.. I didn't worry about that since this week 'cause I need the sound to work for a music purpose. I tried my headphones, I tried to change every possible option of my sound card or my speakers and nothing would help.. I thought the problem was Win2k... I then took it back to WinXP but I still have no sound! I tried every options, disabling/enabling the sound card and its drivers, I tried my headphones and nothing gives me a single bit of sound! I don't think my speakers are dead cause they were still working fine few times ago.. I searched for any driver update but IBM keep saying that I need to use the driver provided by Microsoft (the one which is included in WinXP)... Any idea?

Here's the spec:
IBM Thinkpad 600E
PII 450Mhz
256 Mb RAM
3 Gb hard drive
Crystal WDM sound card (integrated)
Windows XP Pro

Thanks in advance!

Although my laptop has speakers, volume control buttons and sound out hook-ups for external speakers and headset, I cannot seem to be able to get any sound out of it. Under Device Manager there is no listing for any sound card. I even tried running Ubuntu just to see if I'd be able to get any sound out, but even there I could not see anything under hardware, which makes me believe there is no sound card installed. It's strange to have all the components for sounds to be played ( volume control and speakers ), but no sound card. Any advice?I am using Windows XP Pro.

Hi everyone this my first post here.

Well here's my problem my ThinkPad a31 (model type 2653-bu2)
just has no sound or modem now I know it's not a software problem
as the IBM pc doctor utility does not even recognize the hardware.

Now this problem occurred suddenly about 2 days ago just randomly
without any notice and no major events that would provoke such an

I was thinking that there is a problem with the ac'97 codec chip which would
explain the modem and sound both disappearing. But the system can still beep and boop when I want it to i.e. boot up or mashing the keyboard. Also when speakers are connected into the line out jack the beeps and boops can be heard through those speakers.

I also tried the machine without the modem daughter card just to see if anything would change to no avail.

And as a last step I did a teardown to see if there was any debris or bad areas on the
Motherboard and there was not a single oddity.

So anyone have any ideas?

Hi all!

I've got a problem with my IBM ThinkPad: it simply won't start up. Here's what usually happens:

IBM ThinkPad startup screen ("To interrupt normal startup press the blue Access IBM button")
"We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this [none made in the recent past]... [Options:]Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration
Start Windows Normally

Choosing any option leads to: Windows XP "loading" screen with blue loading bar
"A problem has been detected and Windows has to shut down..." Blue Screen of Death
Process repeated with IBM startup page
Any help would be greatly appreciated; I have many important files stored in my laptop. :)

A:IBM ThinkPad won't start up

From the look of it you can try an xp repair or slave the drive to a another machine and get the files off and do a fresh install.

Personally I'd slave your drive to another machine and get the files off it before you do anything else.

Did see a fix in another thread for a similar issue, slave the drive and then run chkdsk on it.

Then I'd personally reinstall windows.

If you wish to try a repair follow this guide

My Thinkpad 390X is running Windows XP Home Edition. When I play a music CD I can barely hear it. The sound card is ess1969 from ESS Technology. All the volume controls are on high. The dates on ESS's site for their latest driver is the same date on my installed drivers. This problem isn't new. It has gone on since upgrading to XP. In searching for the past hour on the internet I've seen where this is a known problem but I've not found a solution. Does anyone out here know about how to solve this problem?

A:Thinkpad 390x sound problem XP

Does the music sound kinda fuzzy... or akward... because the speakers perhaps have been blown. Old speakers go quick, attempt to hook headphones or plain speakers up to your thinkpad and see if you receive the same results...

I received my Thinkpad X1 Carbon a week ago and it's been working fine both on battery power and on the AC adapter the entire time. This morning, I closed my laptop like usual (so it goes to sleep but doesn't shut down) and brought it to class with me. When I tried to wake it up though, nothing would work. It won't boot with the AC plugged in either. I'm pretty sure the battery is an integrated battery and I don't want to void my warranty by fiddling with it. Does anyone know what I can do about this problem? It's the only computer I have in college and I'm taking some computer science courses so my problem is pretty urgent. I also can't feasibly bring it to somewhere to repair since I'm in a pretty isolated town and I don't own a car. Also by reading the forums here, I'm under the impression that the Lenovo customer support line is simply terrible. Is that true? Once again, thanks for any possible insight!

Welcome to the community.
Sorry you're having issues.
Have you tried the "reset" hole on the bottom of the laptop? I believe that it's unmarked, but you'd use a paper clip to trip the switch. I don't have an X1C, personally, so I can't describe it further. I'm mobile at the moment, so have limited search capability, but if you search the forum for a post by Mark_Lenovo, I believe there's a picture of it.
Regarding contacting Service, I've personally never had anything but good experiences. Please keep in mind that on open forums like these, the good reports seldom get posted.

Since I've installed Windows 10 on my ThinkPad Yoga S1 (20C0-S0AX00), I've never been able to get audio via HDMI working. In theory, it looks like it's all fine: ? In practice, however, no audio is transmitted via HDMI (I tried it with different monitors), and the video signal of any application trying to play audio over HDMI is stuttering ? as if it's trying to sync audio and video, but failing for some reason. As soon as the output device is changed, the video plays smoothly again. Changing the "Default Format" did not change anything. Currently, "16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD quality)" is selected. A support ticket I opened quickly after upgrading to Windows 10 promised a driver update to fix this. A more recent ticket advised me to revert to the stock Windows 8.1 installation instead, which I refuse to do. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this issue?

A:ThinkPad Yoga S1 - No sound via HDMI on Windows 10

I have a different Thinkpad Yoga. Checking your issue I wonder if you would like to do some "trial and error" like:
1) Try a different HDMI cable, you never know.
2) Check the driver version of you Intel Display Audio. Here it is mine:
3) Just in case check the Lenovo Support site for your model and try updating the Intel Video and Realtek drivers just in case.
This is only that cames to my mind right now.

So I'm really at a loss with this issue.  I've done so much troubleshooting to no avail.  Removed soundcard and bluetooth and reinstalled.  Installed new drivers.  Deleting and repairing devices. Changing the WiFi to "Prefer 5.2GHz band".  Other troubleshooting based on discussions on other forums... The Problem. Brand new Thinkpad P71.  I have two of the same external speakers I've used with my iPhone via Bluetooth to stream audio and never had a problem.  The speakers are the Oontz 3XL. When I connect with my P71, it can go 24 hours or two minutes, but it will just suddenly stop playing audio.  The blue light on the speaker will turn off.  To get it to work again, I'll have to close the audio app and reconnect the Bluetooh.  Then it will run for anywhere from one minute to 24 hours and disconnect again. I also just bought a brand new Thinkpad X1 Yoga (2nd gen).  Exact same problem.  Did all the same troubleshooting. I mostly stream Sirius XM from a browser (and have tried different browsers as well).  I also play audio from iTunes.  The weird thing with iTunes is that when this happens, the Play/Pause button in the software will also stop working, unless I close the app and restart. It's definitely a Lenovo problem, since I am encountering the same problem on both systems.  I don't know if this could be related to BitDefender and/or Malware Bytes (both are inst... This is the first laptop I've owned, and of course it's a used one. Anyway today while using it, it just froze up on me, and then it would not respond to anything, even cntrl, alt, del. So I had to unplug the battery to get it to turn off. Then when I tried to turn it back on, the HD started to make a sound like if the needle in the HD was actually grinding into the disk. It sounded painfull!. Then it would attempt to post, and then gives me a "disk error". I am going to take a wild guess and say that my hard drive crashed in the truest sense? LOL ... Since my first inclination was to immediately try to find a replacement, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to how to go about selecting a suitable replacement. It is a IBM thinkpad 600 series. I was thinking maybe I should remove the old one and get a part number first? What would you do? Thanks for the input.:blackeye:

A:My thinkpad HD is making an awful grinding sound!

Sounds like a head crash. This is when the head and the platters actually make contact. It can make a screaching or grinding sound. Only thing I can suggest about a replacement is to make sure it is the right size drive. Most of the time laptop HDDs are listed separately from the rest so it shouldn't be a problem finding one. If you wish to get an exact replacement then yes, you'd probably want the numbers off of it.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and this is my first post here, I hope anyone can help me. I recently bought refurbised Lenovo ThinkPad X1 model 1294-A2Y and everything worked fine until I opened it. The reason for opening was looking for battery info, since the battery I got with the laptop was bad and I wanted to replace it. Here's what I did, i opened all as instructed, unscrewd all the parts, take the keyboard off but i didn't touch the processor cooling system. Than I put it all back together. When I pushed the power on button nothing happened, the laptop won't turn on. Than i tare it apart again, plug the battery and the power cord off and pressed the power on button for 20 seconds. After pluging the battery and the power cord laptop started fine, but the problem is that it works only for a few minutes and than turns off all of a sudden. And than it won't start again, and I need to tare all apart in order to turn it off again. Did anyone had a similar situation? Can anyone help me with this? Thank you in advance

Hello, In September 2015(a few days after end of warrenty ), my W530 suddenly refused to power on(turns off after 1/2s) or charge, so I took out the battery, disassembled it, and of course disconnected the CMOS battery, then after waiting several hours, I reassembled the computer and it worked for about 2 days without an issue, but then it failed again...Since that I could always bring it back to life(till reboot or shutdown) by "just" waiting. So my guess is that there is a faulty capacitor somewhere in the powermanagement part. Any Ideas, where to search, or how to fix it(perhaps I am not the only one)? p.s. I have an 100mhz oscilloscope, soldering iron etc.

I have a thinkpad T400. Couple of months ago the problem started. I could not shut it down it just keep re-booting. I had to press and hold the start button to shut it. Now it won't boot at all. It beeps 1-3-3-1 and just sits there. When I press start button all lights come ON for a while and after only battery , AC and Ready lights stay ON. Here are few things I did so far without any luck: 1. Removed battery and AC adaptor waited few minutes put it back - same problem2. Removed CMOS battery. DIMM cards waited for ten minutes replaced - same problem tried with swapping  DIMM cards - when I put only one card on top slot it says put the card on zero "bottom" position. After placing the Mem card on the bottom slot no thing happens. It beeps again and sit. When I checked in the manual it says either DIMM or System board. I do not know which one is giving me the problem. I just do not want to replace all parts without knowing. Can any body help please or had similar issue and solutions if you managed to solve it. Thank you. Roshni

A:Thinkpad T400 won't start just beep 1-3-3-1

If you tried both DIMM cards you have in the bottom slot, it sounds like tyhe system board, assuming they were seated correctly
