Solved: Windows Media Player error - missing another component required to run?

Q: Solved: Windows Media Player error - missing another component required to run?

I'm really not sure what happened to my Windows Media Player; however, I DO have children/teenagers using the same computer - I may never know. My Media Player had been working and in the last week or so when attempting to play a song I receive an error message indicating Media Player is unable to run "due to a missing component".

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program. (Interestingly, the first time I unstalled the program and re-booted - it was still there!?)
I have also made sure the PC is current with regard to Microsoft updates.
The machine is running Windows XP.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance!

....(then I'll move on to solving slow performance, etc. - in another forum area )

Preferred Solution: Solved: Windows Media Player error - missing another component required to run?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi, I'm having a bit of trouble with WMP. I am unable to set it as the default media player because it does not show up in the "Set Default Programs" list or the "Set Program Access and Defaults" list. I have the Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP) installed, as well as Real Player, Quicktime Player, and Media Player Classic Homecinema. I would like to make WMP have all it's defaults but I can't do that due to this problem.

Here's a pic of the "Set Default Programs" window:

And here's a pic of the "Set Program Access and Defaults" window:

I've tried registering wmp.dll using an Administrative command prompt and it says it "succeeded" but it doesn't solve my problem. I tried going back to my earliest restore point and that didn't solve my problem either. Unfortunately, there's no way, as far as I know, to reinstall WMP in vista.

Can anyone help???

PS: I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-Bit with all updates installed.

I have owned my new computer (Dell XPS 410) for about a year now and have had almost no problems with Vista. BUt just recently, about a month ago, I noticed that when I downloaded a video from the internet, and then went to watch it, I got this error message from WMP "the file wmploc.dll has a version number of 11.0.6000.6344 where 11.0.6000.6366 was expected[...]Windows Media Player is not installed correctly and must be reinstalled[...]Do you want to install the player from the Microsoft website?" I click OK, and it takes me to the Microsoft web site to the XP download of Media Player. Now I know already that WMP 11 for Vista is not available for download, so why did it take me there? When I do download it...it says it is not possible to run an older version over a newer version.
I emailed Dell...and all they said was to do a system restore. This may have happened more than a month ago, and I am not prepared to lose that much data.
(btw there is a thread on this site about it http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/forums/index.cfm?action=showthread&threadid=277561&forumid=23
Anyone know a solution to this?
I know one thought was to put in your vista DVD and let it repair it...but I only have the Dell vista upgrade from XP DVD...will this still work?

Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone.

I was working on my pastor's son's computer on Sunday afternoon and he mentioned to me that a Baptist College which his daughters attend streams live sermons over their Web site. He said, though, that for some reason he was unable to access these sermons. I installed the latest version of Windows Media Player, but still to no avail. I also tried to play the streaming video on my computer, but I encountered the same problem. I am attaching the error message dialog because I am sometimes not the best at explaining things.

The link to the sermons is (apparently) always available on the Web site. The only thing which I could deduce is that the streaming video would only work when the sermons take place, but that if the link is clicked on at another time other than the scheduled time that this error would occur.

Could this be a possibility?

Thanks everyone for any help or advice.

Take care.

I tried to open windows media player and it is giving me an error message "an internal application error as occured" it doesn't tell me how to fix it so I googled it to see if I could find some answers. The microsoft website only gives one solution for this problem and it does not fit my problem. I can also not find the media player icon in my add and remove program folder but when I right click on the desk top ICON I can find the target and it shows that it is still installed on my computer but for some reason I can't get to it.

I was going to try to do a system restore but that does not seem to be working either, the system restore screen opens but it is blank.

So I guess I have two issues, if I need to list the system restore issue in a different forum, let me know but if someone out there can help me with both issues, I would be grateful.

Thank you

We are using OS Windows XP
The version of media player on the computer is 10 to the best of my knowledge (I did try to re-download it and it seemed to download okay but I get the same error)

I have no idea what to do about it and I would like to get it fixed because I have to get this done in a month or it expires!

I've decided to shift my computers one desk right. Which means the oldest one goes out of the window, and I'm getting a new work computer. Fun.

I'm using my computer mainly for research purposes. I guess a good comparison would be image/video processing. I benefit a lot from multiple cores, and I tend to push my CPU(s) to their limit. I do play the occasional game, but I'm not playing enough to justify a graphics card. However, I am able to harness the computational power of the graphics card for some specific tasks, hence I do not want to eliminate it completely.

I have saved a fair amount of money for the new computer, and have about $1700 allocated. I'm interested in the box alone, no peripherals required. However, I do not want to throw my money away. Which is why I'm posting here for help. Also, I am easily impressed by big numbers. Especially if I have no idea what they are referring to.

One more thing, I am not planning to overclock my system anytime soon. Mainly because of my work environment. The computer is going to be in a fairly dusty and hot place. Dog hair is a bonus.

And now for the questions!
Motherboard: I realize it is important. However, those things rarely have a number attached to them. How do I choose which one is right for me?

Processor: This is probably the biggest decision I need to make. I know I want 4 cores. I know I want each core to be big. I know Intel has 2 kinds normal (Q6) and extreme (Q9), and I know those ... Read more

I just installed a clean install on my 64bit machine with Windows7 Pro. Media Player is nowhere to be found. Searching the drive discovered hundreds of files that are not executable and have the registry naming system in them, also found several .dlls but no executable. Microsoft's site simply says that it is installed with the OS and there is nothing about how to add it. I did look through all the add windows features and did not find it. I also tried to find the .cab file on the install DVD to see if I could manually install it, but I could not find that as the file structure of install discs has changed since I knew how to do this before.

Anyone know how to install it? I would like to play music and videos.

Thanks in advance.

We are having a problem on a Windows XP Pro SP2 machine running Windows media player 10. It says "this version of media player is incompatible" when you try and open it. We have tried removing version 10, and putting on 9 but you get the same problem. This happens if you download the install file from the website or install WMP from the WindowsUpdate site. Has anyone come across this before, or got any ideas on how to get WMP to work?

Thanks a lot,

I downloaded the SAC Desktop Alert from www.steepandcheap.com today on my work computer. (It works fine on my personal computer.) However, when the alert attempts to pop up & play the alert sound, which is a WAV file, the following message pops up:

"Sonic CinePlayer Decoder Pack - Please wait while Windows configures Sonic CinePlayer Decoder Pack"

The following message pops up on top of the one above:

"Sonic CinePlayer Decoder Pack - An installation package for the product Sonic CinePlayer Decoder Pack cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'CPDP.msi'."

After clicking "OK" several times (the error messages repeat 3 times), then those pop ups will go away & the SAC alert box will go ahead & pop up. However, it is suppose to pop up w/o the errors & play the alert (as it does on my home computer).

I looked in my Program Files & there is a "Sonic" file that includes a "CinePlayer Decoder Pack" file w/ a "cmdvdpakENU.dll CinePlayer DVD Decoder Pack Resources" file w/in it.

I'm not sure if this version is what I need to avoid these errors & if it was just a matter of allowing something to point to this Sonic file?

Also, if I go into the "SteepAndCheap" program file, then "Desktop Alert", then "Resources", then "SAC", there is the "alert" WAV file. When I click o... Read more

Hi weeswally

Well, since your system has had a few things coming and going lately, let's start with the WMP 11's FAQs for this sort of thing:

"Q. Why doesn't the Player recognize my CD-R or CD-RW drive?
A. The drive is either not supported or not installed correctly.

"If the Player is running on Windows XP, search for your drive on Windows Marketplace Tested Products List ( http://testedproducts.windowsmarketplace.com/ ). If your drive isn't listed, it might not be designed for use with Windows XP and might not work correctly. To verify that your CD drive is recognized and set up to burn, do the following:

1. Open My Computer.
2. In the Devices with Removable Storage area, right-click the drive, and then click Properties. If your CD drive is recognized, you will see a Recording tab.
3. Select the Enable CD recording on this drive check box."

Those words are direct from Microsoft.

Another thing to check is that the background Windows XP service that CD recording relies on is setup properly. Right-click My Computer, select "Manage", and under "Services and Applications", select "Services" --- and make sure that the "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service" is set to "Manual" (this will allow it to start when needed). If you want to check in on any other services, here's a guide to XP Services --- http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm

Hi, I used windows update (not microsoft) to download and install windows media player 11 as it was showing in my software updates. After restart, quick launch icon is now missing, start menu entry is gone, and I now have a folder named windows media connect 2 which I hadn't noticed before. Windows media player is still showing in windows explorer, and windows media player 11 shows in add/remove. Please advise, I've probably been installing and uninstalling too many programs lately trying to regain disk space. Btw, neither windows media player, nor media center show up in windows update any longer........both had before, WMP is the only one I tried to update. Thanks

I have a very strange problem. When I listen to a cd or mp3s through Windows Media Player 10 and 11 the instrumental parts sound fine but the vocals sound very faint and distance. This happened all of a sudden, I didn't change anything. If I use RealPlayer it works great. I tried uninstalling 11 and reinstalling 10 and that worked for 1 day. The next day the sound was screwed up again. Anyone heard of this problem? I've checked all the settings I can find in Windows Media Player and can't find anything causing this problem.

I recently had to reinstall Windows 8.1 after having to wipe clean my harddrive because of a hacker "invasion". The Windows Media Player Icon did not appear either on the desktop nor task bar. I know it is there and works because it opens when
I play a music or video. Occasionally I need to go to the app to change or check a setting, for example, to place it on the task bar. Can you tell me how to get the program icon up on my desktop?

Hi all,
some, actually, a lot of my avi files in Windows Media Player are missing, they have just simply disappeared.

My system is:
Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Windows Media Player Version: 11.0.5721.5145

I ran AVG Full scan & Anti-Rootkit scan but they came up with nothing.
I also ran Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware flash scan, quick scan & full scan, nothing again.
I also found a site online that said if WMP has missing files then clearing the WMP Database or the WMP Cache may fix the problem. I didn't do these 2 things though cause it didn't say if that would delete the rest of my avi files as well or just fix the problem...
Any help would be much appreciated.

Windows Media Player playlist location is in 'My Documents\My Music\My Playlists'. Look to see if your playlists are still there.

Next, go to 'My Documents\My Music\BearShare' and see if some of your missing music is located there.

You can transfer music from BearShare to Windows Media Player by following these instructions:

I have noticed that some of the visualisations that originally came with Windows Media Player have gradually got 'Lost' as the Player has become upgraded (now Version 11)

Ambience, Particle, Plenoptic and Spikes are all showing in MP but do not work.

I have done a search on Google for these and can't find them at all. My searches threw up several forums and I found that these missing visuals with the later versions of MP is common. I followed some instructions given on one of these forums and managed to restore 'Musical Colors' - a very popular one, which I had completely forgotten about, as this wasn't showing at all in Version 11.

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to how these other missing visualisations can be restored?
