Cracked Screen Repair Delay

Q: Cracked Screen Repair Delay

I purchased a new laptop three months ago and noticed a crack when I recieved it, within the week I called HP Support and had it sent to a repair facility. The estimated delivery date was delayed a total of five times until I finally requested that the device be sent back to me after about a three month wait period. The repair method appeared to take a far too unreasonable amount of time and I was losing a lot of productivity during that period. Is there some other HP support method which is quicker where I could get a fully functioning device?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

If you are unfamiliar with how the Forum's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forum.

I bought a Lenovo 910 in December. Upgraded the warranty to onsite and added the damage protection. Good thing I did. I now have a cracked screen. So, you say, good thing you got those extra coverages, right? Hold on just a minute. I've learned that "cracked screens" cannot be replaced in the field. They have to be shipped to a repair depot.  I'm so frustrated I could scream. Cracked screen (with no trauma I'm aware of) and now I'm told to repair it I need to be with out it for who knows how long. The story could have gone like this: "Contacted Lenovo, a tech came to may office, replaced the screen and now I'm right as rain! Lenovo is awesome!" Instead, the story goes like this: "Contacted Lenovo. No joy. I have a new computer with a cracked screen that I must now use in a cracked state for the rest of its life because I cannot be without my means of making a living for who knows how long. Lenovo sucks!"

The problem is ona HP laptop running windows 7. bought ~ 2009-2010. Not sure if 32 or 64 bit. Running Norton antivirus. My other windows 7 computer at home is 64 bit.

I searched forum here but did not see a solution.

Norton was updated recently on this laptop.

when you turn the computer on it immediately goes to a screen that is white with fake black cracks and holes. Believe it is a virus(no idea what name). Looks the same way every time it is turned on. I am 100% sure the screen is not physically broken.

Rebooted machine machine and it goes straight to this white screen does not show any windows or other symbols. I did notice that the light indicating capslock turned on before this screen popped up. Hitting capslock again does not fix it. It does not respond to any keystrokes when white screen is up.

Rebooted machine and immediately and repeatedly hit f8 for safe mode and it did no good. Same issue Saw a suggestion that HPs use F11 and same outcome. I tried this several times. One time F11 prevented white screen from coming up but computer turned off. rebooted and tried f2 and that did no good.

I do not have a recovery disc. I am the original owner but cannot find the discs.

What is the best ( an alternate) way(s) to fix this? Hoping for a solution that does not involve removing hard drive and one that I can do at home.

I saw suggestions for hitman.exe and recovery discs and boot discs etc but they require safe mode which I cannot access. Can I scan fro... Read more

Title I wanted to use: Windows XP SP3: Slow Startup / Boot: Black Screen Delay & Delay after logging in

For some reason I can't preview my post when I use this title: I have tried removing all the punctuation, including the &, which doesn't work and have tried other titles with the same character length, which does work.

Problem Begins Here:

When I turn on or restart my computer, the boot up time from the time I press the power button to the time the final icon on my desktop loads is slow. I am not too concerned about the time after my desktop is shown since I have several items to run at startup.

The two areas of concern are:

1) After the XP logo is shown, my screen goes black. This lasts for about 17 to 19 seconds. I don't know when this started as I rarely restart my computer. The problem is worse if I startup in Safe Mode. It's about 1 minute and 10 seconds before I see anything on the screen, and another 40 seconds before something else is shown on screen. Note: In order to not to have to waste time pressing F8 and choosing Safe Mode, I enter safe mode by specifying so in msconfig. The options I chose were /SAFEBOOT and Minimal.

2) After I login, there is a delay of about 30 to 45 seconds before the desktop is shown. Windows stays at the login confirmation screen during that time. This I feel has happened recently.

Normal Boot (i.e. Not Safe Mode):

Call the service support line. Give them the model number, serial number. The keyboard bezel is a CRU (customer replaceable unit). The is a service video that will guide you through the removal and install steps. Should take you about 10 minutes tops to complete.

When I took my computer off my desk the other day in order to carry it to my work, I found out that the lid had cracked, just underneath the Lenovo brand name, so the front part of the lid comes off and I can see the screen between. I went into my local Lenovo ThinkCenter and asked them to repair this problem, but they said this kind of damage is not covered by the warranty. I stand by it that this is a case of material weakness and it ought to be covered. The product simply doesn't correspond to what is promised. Also, I'm afraid that the crack may have caused one of the WiFi antennas to break, besides further impacting the structural integrity of the computer. The computer had never fallen, been hit nor has any it been exposed to any kind of impact. It is also only 2 months old. Of course, this is hard to prove, but there are no other signs of damage on the exterior, which would be the case if it had indeed fallen. And this is a Thinkpad, they're supposed to be able to withstand a certain degree of impact anyway. My X200 went through some seriously rough jungle and never had any problem. The reason I had bought another Thinkpad after my X200 - despite a below-average screen resolution and an above-average price - was their superior customer support. If my issue is not dealt with properly, if it cannot be repaired for free and within a couple of working days, this will be my last ever Lenovo. I sent in my Precision 7510 for repair on Dec 15 2017. It was received by Dell on Dec. 18. Since then there has not been any progress. No diagnosis was done, Dell does not know whether this particular repair center in Texas is doing any work. I called in 4-5 times to get a status update and each time I get a slightly different answer. One rep told me they were working on my laptop working out bugs. Another told me the engineers at the repair center were on vacation until Jan. 2 2018. It has been more than 10 business days since my laptop arrived at an official Dell repair center. Numerous e-mails (supposedly) were sent to the center to get a response from any of the engineers at the Texas repair facility, a Dell manager is supposedly on the case and it's been escalated to expedite it. However, on Jan 3 2018, almost 3 weeks after I have been without my workstation Dell cannot produce any information, the engineers are ignoring the manager's direct order to generate status report e-mail. I personally asked tech support rep to get one of the engineers to contact me personally so that I would be able to know what is happening.
I did not think Dell would be so incompetent, without management control in repair process, and totally disorganized as they have been in the repair process when I decided to buy my Precision 7510. I have asked a manager who is supposedly looking into this to contact me to provide me with some information. So far that has not happened. More th... Read more

Recently I had a HAL.DLL error ("hal.dll is missing or corrupt").

I followed this procedure -

http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/SLN132839

Which consisted of doing a - bootcfg /rebuild

Everything went fine, but now I seem to have two boot configurations.

When the computer starts, before it even get to the operating system, the screen stalls (30 seconds) on a black screen with white print that gives me TWO Boot Options.

Windows XP Home Edition

and

Microsoft Windows Home Editions

Windows XP Home Edition is the new one that I just created.

I've guessing that somewhere there are two boot files, and I have to choose which one. Is there any way to get rid of the old boot configuration so it will bypass this screen and go straight to starting Windows?

At this screen, it has a 30 second time out. After 30 seconds it defaults to the new Boot Configuration, which is the one I want it to default to. So, the computer doesn't freeze or anything, it just adds another 30 seconds to the boot time unless I am there to hit the ENTER key.

Thoughts?

Well, it was bound to happen. After 20 plus years in corporate tech support, unpacking, configuring, and shipping laptops all over the world for the first time I cracked a laptop screen. Unfortunately, this laptop screen was attached to my personal HP Envy Touch Smart 15 Notebook PC.

I have always believed that ?stuff happens?. We live by the luck of the draw. When it?s time it is time. You never know. When I picked up my laptop one morning last week on the way to an offsite there was no mistaking that muffled pop of a cracked screen. Stuff happens.

My screen still worked but no longer with touch screen functionality and I immediately jump on the web to determine the cost of and the degree of difficulty to replace the broken screen. In this site and others, I was surprised by the number of Envy owners who?s broken screen story mirrored my own and whose uploaded photos look uncomfortably familiar.

In almost every uploaded image the impact area was nearly identical, roughly 1.5 cm from the top bevel and nearly perfectly in line with the center of the touchpad.

Many generations of the Envy are designed with a Touchpad that sits in a shallow trough. That trough, the width of the Touchpad, extends out and forms a depression along the outer edge of the laptop.  When closed, the top or lid, with the fragile display, is supported by the stiffer bottom ?half? of the laptop. But a depression on the edge of the keyboard half of the la... Read more

I cracked my Stream 11's screen (well, my 3 year old threw a Lego at it!) but the blacklight worked fine and I used an external monitor until the replacement LCD screen arrived. I replaced the screen and switched the laptop on...black!  External monitor still yields a display, so it's not the GPU.  Then when plugging in the OLD screen (cracked but had still lit up), that now fails to turn on!  I was very careful in replacing the screen, yes the connector is snapped properly in place and there is no damage from the install. What's going on?  Not much having shelled out 40 for a replacement LED for now no screens to work at all!

You might be better off doing a clean install. You won't need to enter the key as its already been associated with your computer.

Backup any files you want to keep first.

I am not certain but it may take the install files from the recovery partition (perhaps someone can confirm this), I know this worked with a recent HP job I did.

I opened my laptop tonight and the screen was cracked, I carried it downstairs and did nothing to it, so it is so WEIRD.  I just spent an hour on the phone and politely explained my situation, the person on the phone said it is $424 to fix.  I explained my dissappointment and said this had to have happened before it is clearly a defect.  They told me nope, so I paid the 424, like everyone else and then I get on the forums and it is rampant.   Clearly HP has a problem.   I am pretty nervous, becuase I just bought a boat load for my employees and this thing just cracked this easily, I am seriously considering not ordering any more.  I fought everyone, they all wanted the surface, but we might have to reconsider.  Sorry HP, I think you are great, but you need to figure this out, and not charge everyone so much to fix it.  Too bad the laptop is awesome, and the screen was amazing.

Manufacturer warranty is for component replacements only but it doesn't include any customer induced damage. This is the number that you should call. HP SUPPORT: 1800 474 6836. Hi, I paid top dollar to get this latest greatest Thinkpad X1. I have used Thinkpads for well over 15 years. I was working in a coffee shop, put it in standby, closed the lid, put it in my bag, walked 100 meters to another store, sat down and opened my machine to resume work and found a hairline crack right across the monitor from one side to the other.  The machine seems fine and most the time it is hardly noticeable. I have a full 3 year warranty but IBM wont even consider the warranty because they say it is physical damage and whenever its a monitor that is damaged they wont even begin to consider it covered under warranty. They want AUD640 to replace the monitor.  I was on holiday and so can also claim in my travel insurance but this is highly unusual for Thinkpads in my experience and wanted to knwo if anyone else has had or heard of similar problems with the screen cracking on a Thinkpad X1.

I recently cracked my screen on the way to class.  Everything works fine, except that I cant use the touch screen now.  The LCD part isn't broken, just the glass covering it.  Theres four little hairline cracks down the middle extending from the microphone hole.  How much would it be to replace?  And how should I go about doing it?  Thank you!

A:Cracked screen

We will need to know the exact model. Maybe all you need is the glass and digitizer and that part is available usually on eBay. The replacement is not easy and usually the best thing to do is take it to a cell phone repair shop as they know how to work with touchscreens better than most computer repair places.

Laptop fell from table and there is crack on screen. I need to replace screen. I checked on internet and there are few different types available in screens like IPS, FULL HD for my laptop. How do I know which screen is compatible with laptop. Laptop model is Dell Precision M4600.

Hello. You have posted your question on the Laptop Audio discussion board. This is out of my area, which is laptop audio, but I would go to the parts-people (Dell parts specialists) and enter the service tag of the laptop in the box under "Not sure which LCD screen fits your laptop", then if still needing more help, chat with one of their parts experts.

The screen on my Spectre has cracked twice. I have extended service protection, so it was replaced each time. Last time, the repair person specuated that the heat from the computer may have cracked it. He suggested that when I turn it off, I put some sort of protection between the screen and the keyboard. Does this sound crazy? Does anyone have any suggestions about how to keep the screen from cracking? I am scared to actually take it any place, so it is no longer "portable:"  This kind of defeats the reason that I bought it. I am definitely discouraged.

Hi. My HP Stream x360 accidentally got cracked.  I bought my laptop in August of 2015 and the warranty has expired. Can I buy a warranty that covers accidental damage? I saw a warranty that covered it on the website but wasn't sure if it needed to be purchased on the day that I purchased the laptop.

Your probably going to have to go to casio, I doubt any of the places you mentioned will touch it. Had trouble about a year ago with one and it got sent back to the manufacturer, it was under warranty, gotta be expensive to have it replaced.

Sitting beside my husband yesterday as he closed the lid on his 11 month old Spectre x360 to hear a slight cracking noise as we reopend to find a harline crack starting at middle top of screen. Spent most of the morning chatting and talking with HP to get the standard it is not covered explanation. First line repsonder quoted me standard 299.00 but when I escalated the supervisior gave me a 30% discount BUT they had a new starting price of 549.00!!!  Has anyone had any luck in repairing through local franchise or shop or escalating. I noticed the new 13 inch model has a redesigned 13 screen. No suprise there.

Bought laptop for my doughter in november , one day she open screen as usual and noticed crack on screen . HP Customer Support decided : mechanical problem , customer fault . Have to pay HP ( repair in workshop other than HP void quarantee ) 250 for repair because HP don't know any issues with bad quality of screen ( they not read posts in this HP support forum I assume ) . But when I requested return of faulty screen to be diagnosed by independent workshop ...... first shock , then usual game " we give you some discunt from price " , then ... we won't take laptop to repair . On the end legal department will be involved and will see .
