ThinkPad X1 Extreme BIOS v1.19 FIXES ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock incompatibility

Q: ThinkPad X1 Extreme BIOS v1.19 FIXES ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock incompatibility

See subject. Ever since the BIOS upgrade, the dock no longer crashes. Two days running now with no problems; prior to the upgrade it would crash routinely when connecting via USB-C. I had to employ the unsavoury workaround of connecting the laptop to a charger and connecting it to the dock via the USB-A port using the USB-A to USB-C adaptor supplied. Now I'm connecting via USB-C cable only. In fact, I'd given up on using the dock at all and had it just sitting there. I decided to give it another go after reading that BIOS v1.19 fixed instances of BSODs occuring when connected to an external monitor (which I did experience now and again when connecting to an external monitor via HDMI i.e. not via dock). Dock Type : 40AFX1E Type : 20MF

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi All I have an X1 Extreme which for the most part I love. However, I am getting seriously frustrated. For 8 hours a day I have the laptop connected via USB-C to a "Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock" via the supplied USB-C cable. In the dock, I have 2 x Benq 24" 1080p monitors connected via DP, a Cherry wireless keyboard/mouse dongle, and a Sennheiser headset for VoIP. The dock is connected to power using the supplier power brick and cable. A few times a day I will get a 'user-mode driver crash' where the dock and all the connected peripherals will crash. The laptop continues to function even though the lid is closed. If I open the lid, all is well on the laptop but the connected components remain 'frozen'. If I unplug the USB-C cable and reconnect it, everything comes back ok. I've tried removing the Cherry dongle and plugging it directly in to the laptop - same issue. Also done that with the Sennheiser. I'm using 1.00.13 of the driver for the dock, and it's on the latest firmware V10010 all from here The laptop works fine when it's not using the dock. It appears to freeze more often when I open a new tab in Chrome, or during a Microsoft Teams call, which seems to suggest it's a 'load' thing that is causing the driver to crash?  I've raised it with Lenovo and they sent me a new cable and closed the case. It's getting to the point where I'm wishing I'd stayed with my previous X1 Carbon. Any help appreciated!

Hi, Everyone. Got me a nice little x270 to replace my old x201.  Happy enough with the machine, but getting it connected to my accessories (monitor, keyb, mouse, ethernet) is a bit of a chore. This machine appears to have a "proper" dock port on the bottom.  Is there a compatible ultradock available for the model 20HN x270?  By proper - I mean, Not USB.  A nice dock I can simply drop the machine into when I'm at the home office.. Thanks!

Hello Community, I'm currently using a Lenovo P53 in combination with a Docking Station ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock.According to the page "Important information about using the dock" it should be possible to charge the Laptop using the dock, if the dock is connected to the USB-C connector on my computer.I'm using the USB-C connector, but my laptop is not being charged. Is there a configuration I missed? Do I need to use another connector (currently using the Thunderbolt connector at the back side)? Or are the information about using the dock misleading? I found this thread:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Displays-Options-and-Accessories/ThinkPad-Hybrid-USB-C-with-USB-A-Dock-... Is this still correct? Kind regardsDarJa

I just obtained new LG 4K displays. I have them hooked up to a ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock via DisplayPort. The dock is connected to a T480s (20L7) via USB-C. I am running the monitors at 3840x2160 @ 60Hz. The performance is a bit laggy at times...it almost feels like I'm pushing the limits of what the laptop/dock can support. I have the latest drivers and firmware installed for both the laptop (via Lenovo's System Update utility) and dock. Even doing operations like Windows + TAB cause the WUDFHost.exe process (Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework Host Process) to spike up to 10% CPU / 100 % GPU.  Anyone else running with a similar setup? Any suggestions (short of getting new hardware) that I can do to boost the performance with my existing setup?

Hello,I've got brand new T480 with ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock and I'm experiencing USB issues when docked.I have read related topics and they seems to be dead without any working solution. Description of problem:When I docked my T480 for the first time, all USBs (only mouse and keyboard) were working. I had left office for night and when I have returned and docked my laptop again, USBs seems to stop working. I?ve tried to reconnecting dock, powering dock off and unplugging devices or changing USB slots without any success.Only restart of computer seemed to get USBs working back again. BUT, there have been about 5 minute period when USB devices were randomly connecting and disconnecting without any warning.Problem appeared again when I left my desk for 30 minutes without turning off or putting laptop into sleep. USBs were dead again. Only restart helped and it was followed with 5 minute period of randomly disconnecting USB devices again. All other connected devices ? 1x FHD monitor via DP, 1x FHD monitor via HDMI and headphones via front 3.5mm jack are working without any problems and laptop is charging properly as well. My laptop is fully updated via Lenovo Vantage and dock in currently at only available FW. Is there any solution to this? It?s get pretty annoying for laptop that is meant to be docked! And it seems that problem occurs accros multiple ThinkPad Thunderbolt docks.. Thank you

Hi all, I recently brought a Thinkpad T495 (20NJ0011GE) and a ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C Dock with USB-A (40AF0135EU).The reason why I went for the Hybrid Dock is because I also own an older T460 which does not come with USB-C yet. According to the manual the T495 supports DisplayPort output on the USB-C (USB 3.1 Gen 2) ports which I assume will then also make use of the internal Radeon Vega iGPU (say, in terms of video performance no difference compared to directly plug a monitor into the HDMI port). My question is now, does the Hybrid Dock recognizes the USB 3.1 DP output or is the DisplayLink "mode" of the Dock always used? The exact same question was discussed in a German Thinkpad board already but there was no definitive answer:https://thinkpad-forum.de/threads/212722-ThinkPad-USB-C-Dock-vs-Thunderbolt-3-Dock-vs-USB-C-Hybrid-D... However, also Windows device manager is showing 2 graphics cards when the Dock is connected so I assume this is the sad truth  Any alternative instead of going for a pure USB-C dock (which would not work on my T460 then)?

dear support forum team,I am suffering from a very annoying problem in combination with my Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga X380 and the ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock. The setup: Notebook - Dock connection is via USB-C, 2 Displays attached to Dock via DP.    The symptoms: Mouse freezes, displays freeze ... after approx. 15 seconds they turn black and recover to normal operation within another 10 seconds. Interestingly: LAN connectivity, which is also handled via dock, stays working. If the problem reoccurs to often, within a short period of time, after the third attempt the external displays stay frozen (showing the last screen) and do not recover. I have to open the notebook lid, as this is the only active display then, and disconnect/reconnect the dock again.During that time, the eventviewer gets flooded with the EventID: 10111 Source: DriverFrameworks-UserMode and the Text: The device "ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock" (Location "003e.0000.0000.001.002.000.000.000.000") is offline due to a user-mode driver crash. I have an X1 Extreme plugged into a Thunderbolt 3 Dock (40AN0230US).  Whenever the screen locks it cuts off audio.  I like this. Prevents sound coming from a computer that is locked.  However, when I unlock the computer, the only way to get the sound back it to restart the whole system.  This I don't like.I have 2 monitors (ThinkVision P27H's) plugged  in using Display Port and the audio is playing from one of the monitors.  The monitors are listed in the audio panel, but neither will provide any sound on unlock.  If I change the volume it lags terribly and eventually freezes.  I can switch to internal audio.I have:1) Reinstalled audio and display drivers on the computer.2) Reinstalled thunderbolt drivers on the computer3) Updated the dock's firmwareBut the problem persists.  Any ideas of what to try next besides getting a replacement?  Every item - even the cables - in the chain are supplied by Lenovo.  Should work flawlessly in my estimation.

Aryeh,

Perhaps you'd be willing to comment on a hardware issue.
I also recently replaced my wife's desktop PC (which I built!) with a Thinkpad T480 that we planned to link with a Thinkpad Basic docking Station (L440?). She has an old, Samsung SyncMaster 214T monitor that required (per our Lenovo salesperson) a DVI ot Display Port cable, which I purchased and connected. Of course, the docked laptop won't recognize the presence of the SuncMaster monitor suggesting the cable may be a problem. It's a standard DisplayPort Male to DVI-I Male Adapter Cable (6 ft). Any thoughts?

Does the Thinkpad P51s support the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? I have the Thinkpad P51s with stock Windows 10 Pro and updated to latest drivers and Windows version and installed the latest Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock drivers. Attaching the Thunderbolt 3 Dock to the P51s as described in documentation, it charges the notebook, however, noting attached to the dock is recognized. I've tested with attaching USB flash drives, headphones, Ethernet, HDMI, and DP, but nothing is recognized nor are any warnings/errors displayed in Windows. While the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock is listed as being compatible with the P51s and T570, the notebook order page does not list the Thunderbolt 3 Dock in any of the accessories lists. Lenovo Sales also confirmed that the Thunderbolt 3 Dock is fully compatible with the P51s.  However, I needed to purchase the Thunderbolt 3 Dock separately from the notebook order. What's going on? Has anybody successfully used the P51s or the T570 with the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? Or is this something I need to wait for full support via a future BIOS/driver update? Or perhaps my Thunderbolt 3 Dock is defective? Thanks,Boris

Hey everyone. As the headline says, I have a ThinkPad 90W Pro Dock and a ThinkPad T470 laptop with the following specs:i5 CPU8GB of RAMWindows 10I'd like to buy three identical monitors - nothing fancy, something between 27" and 32", sub-4k resolution, intended for corporate office use exclusively - and connect them for a cohesive screen experience. Ideally, connect everything via digital connections so there are zero/minimal differences in resolution and image quality on each monitor. Is this possible? First off, can my laptop/dock even run three external monitors? There was some conflicting information online. If it can, am I limited to 1 analog (VGA) and 2 digital (DVI and DisplayPort) outputs as a result of the port options on the dock, or is there some workaround for that? Could I upgrade to the ThinkPad 90W Ultra Dock which has 1 HDMI and 2 DisplayPorts as a possible solution? Would really appreciate anyone's input. And if anyone has a recommended monitor that would fit my needs, I'd love to hear your suggestion

I have a new Thinkpad X1 Extreme that I use for development (virtual machines, remote connections, dev env suites etc.) and I experience regular extreme slowdowns (mouse cursor lags several centimeter on screen). When I looked at the processes everything seems fine (<50% Cpu, memory). When I look at the clock speeds and power use I notice that during a slowdown the CPU clocks down to 800Mhz that is likely the cause (see left side of the picture). I also notice that power use never goes over 35W which seems very low. I have the computer connected to the Hybrid USB-C/A dock with the included USB-C-cable. When I disconnect the dock and connect the poweradapter (135W) to the computer, it gets ~80W and no longer clocks down (see right side of the picture). So it would seem that it is not getting the 65W that is promised in the dock specs that leads to CPU clocking down. The Lenovo app shows no updates and one solution I guess is another poweradapter and have both connectedat the same time, but any ideas if there's other solutions?

As far as I know, there are 3 ways of updating a ThinkPad:1. System Update Utility2. Lenovo Service Bridge Automatic Driver Scan3. Manual Driver Download & Install When updating my machine via System Update Utility, I was met with a BIOS update for 1.23:     Yet after multiple attempts, System Update Utility failed to download the BIOS update:  So I tried option 2, and used Lenovo Service Bridge to automatically scan and download the pending BIOS update. But oddly enough LSB returned by stating my machine was in no need of an update:   My third and last option was to manually download and install BIOS 1.23. Even weirder this time, I was met with a 404 Not Found page when downloading the update:   So what's the deal? Is this an isolated issue, or is this a Lenovo-wide servicing problem? Perhaps Lenovo pulled this BIOS update to work out some bugs with that particular version? I recently installed a 2nd SSD just to run Linux, but not until this BIOS issue is resolved.  Any insight would be appreciated.Thank you.

That is almost certainly a device driver issue, and is usually not related to the BIOS.       The best way to troubleshoot the problem is to locate the C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP file created by the blue screen, zip it up, and then upload to OneDrive etc. so it can be reviewed. Sometime the Windows event logs can help too, but the memory.dmp file works best. Best of luck,

After updating my new X1 Extreme to Bois version 1.18, the systems CPU is capped at 0.78GHz, windows shows a MAX useage of 30% no matter what I am doing. I did verify this is the Bois, I have a second one running 1.17 and if I move the m.2 ssd over to that system the CPU will run to 100% (4GHz). So it's not the windows install or drivers. I have also reset the bios to defaults, same thing. Has anybody else seen this? How do I go back to 1.17? Brent

Today I updated my P50 BIOS to latest version available on the Lenovo website: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/rs/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-... Something is seriously wrong with this BIOS update. It worked like charm before, and now it won't boot when docked (Workstation Dock for P50/P70). The only way to use it docked is to first undock it, start the boot process and when Windows 10 logo appears on screen, then quickly re-dock it. I tried to load BIOS factory defaults, but it did not help. Discrete graphics (M1000M) is forced in BIOS and display priority is set to docking station. Anybody else having this problem and how did you solve it?  Regards,Dragan

I just reverted back to v1.42 and everything works perfectly fine again. It's definitely a problem with BIOS v1.43.
