Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Always on USB not working

Q: Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Always on USB not working

Hi, I just got the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon and the Always-on usb does not seem to work. The USB on the right side of the machine works but the left side is unresponsive. I've tried pluging in my phone, a usb reciever for a wireless mouse, and a usb drive. Is there something I need to do to activate the USB port?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi rtann27

I had the same problem, i opened the laptop and saw, that the flat cable leading from the small usb board was not properly conected to the mainboard. A little pressing against the cable solved the problem.

Hi, I was using my laptop audio system, and suddenly they stopped to work (the speakers or if I connect a Headphones). However, if I connect through the HDMI the audio came out on the TV speakers for instance. I already tried to update the driver software and all the things possible... Any suggestion? How should I proceed?

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

Apologies if something similar has been posted, I just can't find the answer. We have a 5th Generation Thinkpad X1 Carbon connected to a Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 dock. At the moment the display is mirrored using a VGA cable to connect to the dock. What we would like instead is to connect the dock to 2 external monitors with separate content on each monitor and the laptop display blank. I just can't figure out if this is possible, what might be needed, and how! Any help greatly appreciated.

Hey everyone. I was looking to buy a new laptop this year after using my MBP for like 7 years now. After making a long term decision of not buying the newest 6g X1 Carbon because there are still some things that trouble me a little, i've listed some improvements i think that need to be made before i can consider this the perfect laptop it almost could have been (in order of importance):change aspect ratio (something like 3:2)improve reflection on HDR screenmake machines compatible out of the box with widespread linux distros like ubuntu out of the box (no driver issues, no deep sleep bugs,...)option for no fingerprint reader (it kills the design a little bit and there are some people who still dont use it at all; i know you can deactivate it)updated webcam (could be considered an important thing for some business people if you ask me)updated speakers; the ones being used now are on the low end of "OK" and i think there is def some room to upgrade even if its not designed as a media deviceof course if possible id love to see some graphics and RAM upgrades aswell but for a notebook as thin as this one i think those specs might need to suffice for another 2-3 generations.et another thing about blowing air outside the right side where your mouse potentially is could get a rework aswell.let me know what you think; obviously everyone has different wants and needs for a machine but if the maxed out or even just standard device is that expensive some of those suggestions above could ... Hello everybody, is there anybody that has upgraded his 3rd Gen X1 Carbon to a 1TB ssd? I'm running out of place and would like to have a bigger ssd and do not know which one I could use. I tried reading in the forums, but was not able to find out which SSD would work. Somehow NVMe is not supported, it has to be a PCIe SSD (I think), but I'm not too familiar with these things. I looked at the new Samsung SM961 1TB that is just coming out, would that be able to work? The specs are here: https://gzhls.at/blob/ldb/c/4/4/9/618ff48c1c0dc799c9442fd598fa06935527.pdf Any help would be deeply appreciated.Regards,Jochen

When you turn on the laptop all you get is the back-light.  You don't get the splash screen, POST or anything else for that matter. I've tried using the FN+F7 to make sure it wasn't set to projector mode but that didn't do anything.  It's like the power cable to the LCD is connected but the data cable is disconnected.  I suspect this is the case due to the screen going "weird" as the user puts it.  I also suspect that it might have been dropped. What I am wondering is if there's a BIST (Built-in Self Test) for the LCD or anything like that.  I'd love to avoid the support charges. Also, the numbers on the white tags on the back of the laptop have worn off, is there a way to get the serial number without the original paperwork?

Hello, Firstly, i am sorry but i don't speak english very well. Secondly, i just bought an external bluray reader which reads bluray thanks to the Cyberlink PowerDVD Application. Nevertheless, when i try to read a bluray, it doesn't work. So, i launched the Cyberlink bd advisor and it is written there is a problem with my laptop graphic card. The laptop is a thinkpad x carbon 4th gen and the graphic card is an intel hd graphic 520. So, i tried to reinstall the drivers after having retrieved them from the intel website. Nevertheless, i get an error message : "you should contact the computer constructor in order to update your drivers". Then, i went to the lonovo x carbon 4th gen driver's page in order to get the good drivers. However, it doesn't change something... So, i come here to ask you some help.

I have a Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 5 On the bottom right corner of the keyboard, there is a rattling noise when the laptop is shaken or moved. I opened the back cover to try to discover the source of the sound but I can't seem to find it. The laptop was purchased around 5 months ago, and I just discovered this issue. From what I can tell, the issue doesn't seem to affect performance but just poses a simple nuisance. The sound appears to be originating from the vent on the bottom of the laptop. sounds like there is either a small object moving around or perhaps a cable hitting the chassis. any insight on the origin of the issue or possible solutions would be appreciated.

Not all X1 Carbons have WWAN; many were WWAN ready, with the antennas and SIM card slot fitted but no WWAN card. You need a machine with a WWAN card and a suitable SIM for WWAN to work.

I received my new silver matte Thinkpad X1 Carbon laptop less than 3 weeks ago and it already has a slight skim mark in the lid!  I tried to lightly rub it off with a cotton cloth because I thought is was a scuff mark on the surface.  That didn't work.  After a closer inspection, I realized that the lid paint was skimmed!  Does Lenovo sell touch up paint for the silver matte finish? Does anyone have any suggestions how I can refinish my lid?  It seems that the new silver matte color is not as durable as the traditional black!

Hello, What would one need to play a Dolby Vision UHD Blu-Ray disc on this laptop that has a DV screen? Is it a matter of just waiting for PowerDVD to support DV? What about playing a regular H.265 movie file that has Dolby Vision? Note: for what it's worth, as the laptop has no optical drive it will be a case of playing an .iso of the disc that has been ripped using my desktop PC. The CPU supports SGX. PS: I also read somewhere that Dolby Vision will only be enabled with a future system update, is this still the case? Thanks.

My current Lenovo is a refurbished one and has a storage drive of 117GB. I desperately need more and have already gone through external storage drive, and also USB.  Is it possible to add more storage drive space or SSD to this Thinkpad? What is most compatible with it?  Thank you for your time

A:Adding more storage space on a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2nd Gen

2nd gen means the model number starts with 20A7 or 20A8.  Those drives were all SATA based, so most retail 2280-format SSDs will work (not NVMe).  The biggest drives that were sold with the machine were 512GB, although 1TB and 2TB drives can be found.  The safest thing is to buy one with a Lenovo FRU on it.  Here is the parts list"  (SSDs are at the bottom)

Sometimes pressing on the certain places helps, at the bottom of the display near these dark lines. First I thought that the problem is in the display cable, so I installed a new one, but it didn't help. I noticed that touchscreen works fine even when display is blacked out. What should I do, maybe someone had some simular issues? Sorry for pics quality, I can attach better ones if needed. Thanks for any help!

Hello, We have an Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2nd Gen (20A7, 20A8) Windows 10 x64 and the computer performance slowed down since we updated the system with Lenovo utility, the most relevant update is BIOS update us 1.31.1.19. The CPU usage increases from 5% to 9x% with no reason and its continiously increasing and decreasing without opened applications, we also installed Intel IO updates. Somebody have the same situation or knows how to fix it? Thanks,Regards

A:Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2nd Gen slow performance after installing Lenovo updates

That is the reason why I always going to see forums of new updates, those updates are like beta, with bugs and other things that cost us to waiste our time fixing it and getting stressed.I got critical update about bios, but as my performance is great I don't updating anything. My answer would be, to backup your bios version, it will get things back to work properly. And for future just don't install anything, after installing it cost problems.Yesterday I wanted to download program, yeah downloaded virus too, rofl, internet is full of virus, so technical supports could make more money ( if you can't fix yourself)

I've just updated my X1 Carbon 3rd Generation to Windows 10. and there are three problems. I'm posting them in one message because they may be related. The Intel Chpset Driver from the support website will not install. It geest as far as the Intel branded installer then says it can't find "setupchipsetx64.msi", even if you browser to the file location.Intel Management Engine 12 appears to install without error messages but every time I run System Update it says it needs to be installed, so either it hasn't installed or it has but System Update doesn't recognise it.The cellular connection option has disappeared from Windows 10 and the Lenovo Wireless Power Settings app. My Sierra Wireless EM7345 appears without error in Device Manager under Network Adapters, it also appears as a GNSS Sensor undeer Sensors, but Windows cannot start this device because its configuration information is missing or damaged in the registry (error 19). It appears in Network Adaptors with a strong signal and is enabled but there's just no way of using it.I have of course installed ALL the updates from th support website apart from the two I've noted which won't install and the two enterprise updates which I don't need.. Windows Update also says the system is up to date. Very disapointing because the 4G adaptor was an expensive option to add to this laptop.

Hi. I've been having X1 carbon 5th gen for a few months and have been satisfied with it.But today I found out that the USB port located on left side is not working properly. Here are the symptoms:- USB storage such as USB sticks or portable HDD work fine, and data get transferred normally.- It also charges smartphones and other devices that can be charged by USB.- It does not detect corded inputs such as external keypad, mouse, and, keyboard. The USB port located on right side works perfectly. I find it to be really weird with this problem. Input devices do not work at all when USB storages work just fine. I have tried reinstalling Windows fully, installed all the latest updates including the latest BIOS, have set the BIOS settings to default, and nothing worked.  I'm curious if it could be some driver or BIOS driver issue or pure hardware defect. Has anyone experienced this? If there are other things I could try before sending it for repair please let me know. Thank you!

HI there I am having a peculiar problem. The right-side USB port (the one next to the Ethernet port) of my 3rd Gen X1 Carbon (model 20BT) has stopped working. Windows reports two USB controllers, and Linux does the same. The ethernet port works as expected. I even replaced the USB/RJ45 system card and the problem persists: The Ethernet port works, the USB port does not. No peripheral is being recognised (I have tried a wireless mouse, a usb flash drive and a Yubikey) and no power seems to be available from the port.  I was thinking that if there was some issue with the motherboard then one of the USB host chips would not be recognised, but this does not seem to be the case. I am now thnking whether it would be worth it to replace the motherbaord or just purchase another (used) machine. The warranty has expired. Any ideas? Thank you! Frixos
