Solved: how to decrease and increase disk space

Q: Solved: how to decrease and increase disk space

I just got a Lenovo Z460 running on windows7.
By default, the harddisk is split into c:\ and d:\

I want to decrease the disk space of c drive and then use this additional space to increase the disk space of d drive (the logical drive)

To decrease the disk space in c drive, I go to computer management/storage/disk management and then at the c drive, I right click the mouse and then choose "shrink volumn". I successfully shrinked c drive and now I got an unallocated space but how do I allocate this new space to d drive. The "extend volume" in d drive is greyed.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The windows partitioning tool is somewhat limited in that it will only extend a partition to the right, so you're going to need an additional tool.

I personally use a Live Linux CD with an included partitioning program, usually GPartEd. If you're not familiar or comfortable with Linux then someone else will have to recommend another tool.

Keep in mind, whatever tool you use will take quite awhile to extend that partition because it not only extends the partition but also moves all the data to the beginning of the newly extended partition. It looks like you've got about 10-11 Gigs of data on there so it can take possibly half an hour or more.

A somewhat convoluted solution possible with the windows partition tool would be:

1) Create a new partition with the unallocated space. Let's call it F drive.

2) Copy/paste all the data from the D drive into the new F drive.

3) Delete the D drive.

4) Extend the F drive to include the now unallocated space on the right of the new F drive.

5) Rename F drive to whatever you want.

Hi, I just bought a new computer with Windows 7 and a 1 TB hard drive. Windows 7 recycle bin came configured with about 40 GB of space allotted to it. I want to decrease its capacity (down to about 10 GB) in order to increase the available space on my hard drive. However, when I decreased the recycle bin size, there was no apparent change when I left double-clicked on My Computer and it showed the amount of free space on my c: drive. Here's my question: how can I decrease the recycle bin and have this extra space show up on my c: drive as available storage space?

A:decrease recycle bin to increase storage space??

Hello People,

I wonder if you would help me to increase the size (in system) for the restore points. At present, on my laptop, it is maximized @ 4187mb. I want it to go to 5035, which is suggested before installing SP3.

Thanking you in advance,

Just a few weeks ago, I started noticing my computer was slower and slower and responding on programs, which I found rather weird, as I've only downloaded some movies the last entire month (Porn not included.) - But there, a virus might have slipped in.. I am not sure though, as Malwarebytes, Adwcleaner and CCleaner haven't really affected anything. (Yeah, I know CCleaner just cleans up, but it hasn't decreased the sudden increase in HD space taken)
As you can see.. The black line shows how much space was left, just a few weeks ago.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit
/Immediate update, I just removed a lot of files, it just took up additional 3 gb.

A:Extreme increase in Disk Space taken

Go to file and folder options. Go to View. Check to view hidden files, operating system files and empty file folders. See if there are any other files.

Recently I made a few videos with fraps that took up around 110 gigs of space, so I decided to compress all that and upload to youtube, the amount of space the videos are taking up are now down to 70, but my free disk space hasn't increased, in fact it's decreasing as if I never deleted the videos, it isn't decreasing on it's own only if I make files, so basically it'll take up space and it just stays that way for some reason.

I've looked around the internet for a solution, I have tried:Disabling automatic backup, that didn't do anything.
Scanned my computer with malwarebytes to make sure it isn't some worm, nothing found.
Used disk cleanup, cleared up 900 MB but the free space still didn't change.
Used CCleaner, cleared up 500 MB but the free space still didn't change.
Used disk check, nothing bad was found.
Used WinDirStat, everything seems fine as it should be, but theres 100 gigs of <unknown>, and I have no freaking clue what it is.
Used SpaceSniffer, found absolutely nothing that would take up that much space

I would use defraggler, but it will take WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too long so I'd use it when I have no other option, there's gotta be another way other than literally waiting over a day for defraggler to finish, and chances are that it wouldn't change anything as well meaning I would have wasted a bunch of time, if defraggler doesn't help I'll just reformat the whole thing.

Any suggestions?

A:Free disk space does not increase after deleting files

Welcome to the Seven Forums Jack101.

I suggest that instead of using Defraggler you use Puran Defrag and carry out a boot-time defrag.

Now about free disk space. Sometimes the correct free disk space shows up after a reboot. However from your message it would appear that you have already tried that but without success. Another way to find out how much free space exists is to open the Command Prompt and use the "dir/p" command. Please try that and check if the free space shown is identical with what you see with your method and report back with the command prompt screen shot after dir/p has been executed.

Good luck.

I am working on creating space on a laptop. It has a 250 GB HD. Out of this, apparently almost 25 GB is taken up by system backup/restore partition (I think). So the total disk appears as a 224 GB disk. I started to backup files using the Toshiba Disk Creator but frequently got errors saying it could not continue writing to the DVD because it may have scratches or something to that effect. This happened several times.

After this, when I was actually successful in writing to another DVD, I deleted the folders on the disk that I had backed up to the DVD. Thus I was expecting the free space to go up. But it didn't. I tried using ccleaner, and I also tried rebooting thinking that after reboot I will see more free space. But it didn't.

Eventually I started using another disk burning program (ImgBurn) since I was fed up with the Toshiba Disk Creator and then I noticed that suddenly by free disk space went up from 44 GB to 104 GB. So I thought the problem might have been that Toshiba Disk Creator was creating some kind of cache for storing temp files, but when I looked in AppData I did not see any large files or even a large number of files from my previous unsuccessful attempts at writing to DVDs. Since the free disk space went up, I was happy and I continued using ImgBurn with better results. But after I deleted the folders that I had backed up, I again noticed that sometimes I am not seeing the free disk space go up.

I would appreciate any pointers as... Read more

Alright, so this is about a sound problem, but my tests make me think it's something to do with Windows 7. Here's the issue :

I have a SteelSeries Merc Stealth keyboard with buttons for increasing and decreasing volume. The decreasing volume works, but the increasing does not. So, if I want to increase the volume (in a game, for instance), I would have to alt-tab. I thought this was because my keyboard was somehow broken and that particular button didn't work anymore.

However, I just received a brand new pair of Corsair HS1 headphone. On the cable of the headphones are buttons to increase and decrease the volume of Windows. So, as you may guess, the decreasing button works, but not the increasing one.

Since the probably of having two defective items, one being new for the exact same problem being so slim, my guess is that something in Windows 7 is off. So, can anyone help?

Here's my specs :
Gigabyte X58A-UD3R
Intel i7 Quad Core @2.67GHz
Corsair TX750 750W PSU
Corsair Vengeance 3x4BG CL9-9-9
Gigabyte Radeon HD 6870
Corsair Vengeance 12GB 3x4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 Triple Channel
Windows 7 64-bits w/ Service pack 1

A:Can decrease volume, but can't increase

Just to specify as a proof the buttons work, when I use a program that enable Global keys like Winamp, the volume of that program will increase or decrease. It's the Windows volume that doesn't increase.

As the title states. I'm planning on trading my dad laptops. I do audio production and gaming. I have an i3 and the cpu is clocked at 2.4 ghz and he has an i5 clocked at 1.8. How much of a difference will this impact performance? For better or worse?

Im curious because I had a desktop a while back and it had a Core 2 Duo @ 2.8 and I went to this i3 @2.4 laptop and the cpu sucks in comparison to the desktop...I was originally thinking the i3 would be a increase since it was newer architecture.

I would still think on the graphics side its definitely an upgrade because the i3 uses Intel HD Graphics and it sucks...it doesnt even use opengl. The other uses a Nvidia GeForce GT 740M.

A:(2.4 Ghz i3) to (1.8 Ghz i5) Increase or decrease in perf?

The difference between the desktop and laptop is multifaceted. Desktop probably had faster hard drive, dedicated video, and optimized for performance versus laptop optimized for battery life.

And the core i3/5/7 each do graphics onboard. The slower the cpu, the more impact the graphics will have on overall performance. Core i3 are budget machines, for basic tasks. They are not really suitable for gaming or video and music production. The core i5 will suit better in these areas.

I am new to posting on this site, but I've used this site before, when I came across something that I hadn't seen before.  I really enjoy this site and when it helped me with an issue, I always put this site as a resource.

A:Will Windows 10 increase or decrease support questions?

I haven't installed Win 10 yet...but I have seen the introduction of every Windows system since Win 95 and it occurs to me that what is currently reflected is the same amount (or even more) of puzzlement, rhetoric, and uncertainty...that comes with every version of Windows...until the first SP is issued.  Once that occurs, users seem to settle down and have become more familiar with what are imagined problematical situaitons, as opposed to real problems where they need/want assistance with specific types of system situations.

A:Unable to increase free space on Recovery Disk "E"

System Restore points take up space on C, rather than in E or a recovery partition in my experience. A recovery partition is normally put there by the manufacturer to allow you to restore to factory specifications if needed. I wouldn't ever deliberately put anything else on a recovery partition.

Hi there!

over the past 3 months, my free space has decreased dramatically! i had about 14GB of free space and now it's down to 5.5GB.
During these months i haven't installed anything, the only thing i do is surf the web, update some old programs and download movies which i transfer to an external hard drive.
So i haven't added anything to decrease the free space.

I've noticed that on the user folder, google earth takes some 1.8GB of space.
The folder C:\Windows\winsxs is growing almost every day and now it has reached 9.57GB

So my question is can how can i free some 8GB safely? Is there any folder that keeps temp files that can be safely removed?

A:Free space dramatic decrease ! !

The WinSxS (Windows Side-by-Side) directory cannot be deleted or modified. . Content is added to this directory in response to installing applications, enabling packages in the add-remove-programs UI, and installing Windows Out-of-Band releases. One important note - uninstalling your application or Windows app will not necessarily remove the physical bits from the system. The servicing stack marks the bits as unusable and prevents their use through "normal" means. Files and directories will be removed over time as the servicing system cleans up after itself. Administrators should not, for any reason, take it upon themselves to clean out the directory - doing so may prevent Windows Update and MSI from functioning properly afterwards. Preventing accidental deletion from the directory is accomplished by putting a strong security descriptor on the directory that inherits to its children.

In Windows Vista, the directory %windir%\WinSxS has much stronger protection on it than it did in Windows XP and Server 2003. The owner/group is now a SID named "Trusted Installer", a service SID used to start the TrustedInstaller service. Users other than the trusted installer are granted only generic-read/generic-execute by default. This increased protection ensures that only the trusted installer service is allowed to modify the servicing-related metadata and files.

If you move or delete winsxs directory there are 2 issues. 1. Updates will NOT work on the machine as ... Read more

I recently noticed that my drive C: decreased in around 5GB.
I have my HDD partitioned in 2 (100GB for C: and 350GB for D:), and I store everything in drive D:.
I have kept my drive C: with around 30.5GB of free space for several months now, but since last week that suddenly dropped to 24.8GB.
I checked with WinDirStat, which shows that C: does have 69.5GB in use. I don't know if this accounts for the part of the drive that I'm not allowed to use though.
I do not recall having installed or downloaded anything that large. I did update my Avast antivirus and downloaded some windows updates I believe. Disk Cleanup did not show anything large, and the Disk Defragmenter says it's 1% fragmented.

The file attached shows WinDirStat's results. My Users folder has my drobox folder using 4.75GB, which is almost half of the current Users size of 10.4GB. Unless it was empty before, I don't think the 5GB decrease came from here.

Am I missing something? I'm not really in need of that space if it's something unavoidable, but I am worried of spyware and viruses. Avast doesn't detect any threat so I can't be sure if it's that.

Any help would be appreciated. If there are better tools, I will try with those too.
Thank you.

The space is used by system restore. Delete the restoreoints. Then make a new one in case it is needed. I think that your problem will be solved.

i wanted to copy a cd image (4.18GB ISO format) from partition F: (NTFS 9GB free) to partition D: (FAT32 12GB free space) and windows gives me that crap there is not enough space and i should do a disk clean up..ok i made a disk clean up to partition D: and there was 3GB of system restore files!!! maybe coz i deleted 6GB earlier anyway i deleted the system restore files and i turned it off so i have now 15GB free space on partition D: and yet it tells me there is not enough space..

i tried a trick i thought i can use winrar to archive the ISO image and select the destination folder on the partition i wanna move it to..but at like 80% winrar popped up a message that only NTFS partions can have files with file size more than 4GB..i hope theres nothing wrong with my windows or my hard disk..and i wanna know if theres a way to move that ISO image..thanx in advance.

I use W7's volume control for the studio monitors I use. It's not practical to use the knob on the monitors since it is located in the back.

The max volume (100%) in W7 is not loud enough while the minimum volume (0%) still makes sound when Id like it to be mute if it's at 0%

How can this be done?

So when i first started defragmenting my C:drive....i had 34.0 GB of free space..and i left to go eat taco bell..XD..and when i came back...it was around 70% done but the free space was down to ONLY 2 GB.....

so iv looked evrywhere and foun lots of people had this problem..didnt quite find a solution though....and BTW...im stil defragmenting *** im writing this...but i might just end it becouse it started going really slow.....im assuing becouse i have no free space left on that partition....

Another important thing is that im NOT using the disk defragmentor that comes with the OS....

im using one called "Piriform Defraggler"....and before that i used the default one that came with the os...and it said that it was 0% defragmented..but when i analyzed it with the other program..it said it was like 64% fragmented......

So if theres ny more info u guys need ...just let me know...and i dont know if my HD space will come back after i close the program..but idk..il let u guys know..becouse i might just close it out now..becouse i dont think it will finish any time soon....

A:Error: Low Disk Space. You are running out of disk space on Recovery (D:) For Vista,

Hi and welcome

We could use a screen shot of the drive D partition but probably your backups are stored there and you can delete the oldest to free up some space. Make sure you have another before you delete it. That partition is tiny bTW 9 gigs is way too small to be effective.

I am wanting to multi boot my laptop with my current version of vista and windows 7. i went into the control panel>system maintanance>administration tools>computer management>disk management. I have tried to 'shrink' the volume of the vista disk drive (:C). It, however it only allowing me to shrink it by a maximum 248MB, when I need at least 16GB. Can someone please assist me with how to increase the maximum limit i can decrease the volume by?

I am running,

Windows Vista Home basic, SP1, 32-bit.

A:Increasing maximum volume to decrease on a disk drive

Sounds like your hard drive is too full. You may need to delete stuff to free up space on your hard drive then it should allow you to shrink it more.

Hi I have very little space on my C Drive.

I have done the following:

Removed hibernation feature
Run disk cleaner
Removed previous restore-points, (I think, not sure how to check though)

Any other ideas to delete items for space.

I keep getting warning that the space has run out.

(This is all my problem b/c when I installed the OS I gave W7 such a small amount of room. When I get the chance I will re-install.)

Basically, I set my hard drive into two partitions with the idea of running 64bit on the smaller volume one.
This was so I could start adding programs etc. to 64bit when I knew they worked but I have found that this is now my main O/S to surf & play on.

I now have a problem where I am running out of H/D space...

I want to increase the volume on my 64bit but it only states 'shrink'. Does this mean I will have to shrink the other partition which inturn will INCREASE the other automatically?

I would rather ask you grown ups first before I start tinkering.... :-[

BTW, its a 160gb hard drive.

I just bought a new Alienware m18x computer, and it's partitioned into three sections, as seen in this screenshot. The thing is, I want to split it into 4 partitions: OS (150GB), Data (250GB), DATA2 (300GB), DATA3 (300GB), though if DATA2 and DATA3 were one partition, that would be fine.

However, when I go into Disk Management's "Shrink Volume..." option, it says I can only shrink it by 464GB (464394MB), even after a defrag. This would make OS about 500GB in size, which is much too big. What's odd to me is, since this is brand new computer and there's only 30- or 40-some GB of data on there, is that I can't shrink it down smaller.

Do I have to reformat to get these partitions that I want? I ask this because I can't seem to find a Windows serial key that came with the computer (only the disk) so I only want to do this if absolutely necessary. And if I don't have to reformat, how do I shrink the OS partition to ~150GB? Edit: I *did* manage to find the location of the product key, so I can reformat if necessary. Would still like to avoid this, though.

Note: I have seen this thread and searched Google a bit, but I haven't found any solutions to this particular predicament.

A:How do I increase available shrink space on C?

With the bootable CD of Partition Wizard you can do it. Here is some more info. Partition Wizard : Use the Bootable CD

Warning: Before you create new partitions on your disk, make sure you have only 3 or less primary partitions on that disk. You will see that only in Disk Management.
