How to determine if USB ports are 1.1 or 2.0

Q: How to determine if USB ports are 1.1 or 2.0

I'm interested in buying a USB flash drive that's compatible with USB 1.1/2.0 and I want to know if it's compatible with the ones on my laptop.

I attached a screenshot of the USB controllers listed in Device Manager.

Preferred Solution: How to determine if USB ports are 1.1 or 2.0

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Your laptop has 4 USB2 ports.

Astra32 says I need to install some usb drivers for 2.0??

My computer is a compaq presario 6027us, I don't think it has usb 2.0 ... unless one of my pci cards (one of which also needs drivers apparently) is actually usb 2.0, but it doesn't look like a usb port, yeah neither of my pci cards (which I don't know what they are) are usb 2.0 I don't believe.

A:How can I determine which USB ports are 2.0? I didn't think I had any but..

1) If you go to the HP website, click on support, click for Download drivers and enter your make/model you get to the driver page for your computer here. Download the USB 2.0 driver from their site

2) As to exactly which ports are connected to that controller... it'll be trial and error. If you connect a USB 2.0 device (like an external USB disk) to a non-USB 2.0 you'll get a little pop up message telling you "This device could run faster... etc.". So just try out all your ports once the driver is installed

Run a 'sys info' and break into BIOS setup, the model number should be there on both main pages.
USB 3.0 ports (back then), have a blue 'tongue' inside the port, 2.0 have black.

Hey all so I have forwarded some ports on my router with Airport Utility (NAT port forwarding), but using cmd netstat -n the ports I forwarded aren't listed and using online port checkers confirms they are closed. I added exceptions to my firewall (even though it is off), and windows defender is off, and Avast's shields are all off. I honestly have no idea how to open the ports up and haven't found a way to do this using Windows 8 (not pro).

Anybody have any ideas? It seems like Windows 8 is blocking these ports from opening for some reason. There doesn't seem to be an override function in cmd to open them, either.

In case you're wondering why I need the ports open, I'm trying to resolve a "request timeout" error when pinging somebody on Hamachi - so I'm trying to open the main ports Hamachi uses (I just want to play Terraria, man).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Ports closed; router forwarded ports, firewalls disabled?

Temporarily add your PC IP into the DMZ and try again , see if the internal/external tests then notice the ports open , this will test if it's a router or PC issue....

Don't forget to take it out of the DMZ after testing...

My modem-router is in bridged mode (everything is disabled except internet), i have disabled windows firewall i have taken my firewall offline (until this issue is resolved) but still no one can access my server (they can't even join a game if i create a server)

if i go to port checker it says connection refused on all ports except port 80? how do i force open the ports?

i called my ISP and they say they should be open and there not blocking any ports.

I have a static ip address, 24Mbit up 2.5Mbit down.

when i run my filesharing program (for sharing files between my and my clients) and they try to download a file from me it says it will take (99years, 99days, 99 hours) now i don't really have that long to wait

edit: and yes my network properties are configured manually (and not on auto detect) i have no problem accessing the internet myself

A:Opening ports, i have the firewall disabled but ports are still blocked

It would be better to open the ports in the running firewall than to turn it off. Firewalls load drivers, running or not. Many firewalls block everything by default when they are turned off so that the machine is protected during boot.

You may need to uninstall some firewalls to get them to open all ports.

This is a brand new custom built PC for web browsing for a motel lobby.

Running latest BIOS and latest drivers downloaded directly from manufacturer's website.

I tried switching between all 3 internal headers and none of them would detect the flash drive.

If I plug the drive in the rear ports it detects right away leading me to suspect the case's ports might be defective but I don't have another USB 2.0 card lying around to confirm.

Based on this info does it seem likely that the front ports themselves are faulty?

A:Front USB ports not working, but rear USB ports work…

You might check to see if the case end of the USB cables are properly plugged into the front panel holding the headers. Some board need more than one brand of USB drivers, Renesas, NEC, etc.

Installed and used an uninstaller to clean out some old files and apparently removed some important .dlls. Some programs were affected by the removal of the .dlls including MS Office and internet browsers, and I noticed some strange things on the home network on other PCs. Some pages weren't loading flash portions of internet pages. I suspect that the router drivers were somehow compromised, but that problem seems to be under control for now. I reinstalled flash player and shockwave, and I am mostly confident that the browser problems are resolved.

Ran the repair utility on the XP installation disk on the affected machine, and for the most part the original problems seem to have disappeared. MS Office functionality has returned with the flash reinstall and with the XP reinstall. I have reinstalled some drivers including the graphics and monitor drivers, so graphics are good. However, a whole new crop of problems have appeared since the repair installation.

The affected computer is an HP DC7700 small form factor with 6 USB ports on the back and 2 on the front. Additionally, there are also a microphone jack and a headphone jack on the front. The 2 USB ports and the mic and headphone jack on the front both have lost functionality. I use the usb ports frequently with cameras and other small utilities and the mic and headphone jack for voice to text. Pretty important to me to restore functionality of the devices. I could use the 2 USB on the right 2.0 ports, but the transfer rate was terrible.  My response on another question where someone had a similar issue... good luck!  "Hi  Not sure if this will help you but I had the same problem, the two left ports were not working on my Dv7. Hey guys, brand new kid here. Fairly computer literate but not a whiz by any means. I had to do a Windows XP System Recovery on my HP desktop PC a few weeks ago and since then my USB 2.0 ports haven't been themselves.

Before when I used my Kingston 4gb SDHC card in my front USB 2.0 ports (as they're labeled) it worked at full speed with no problems. After the System Recovery, when I plug in the card it gives me a message saying "This device could perform faster if it were plugged into a High Speed USB 2.0 Port." The problem is, my Device Manager lists a high speed port and hub on my computer, but I get the same message on all the ports on my computer. I tried updating the drivers and uninstalling and reinstalling them but to no avail.

Is there any way to fix this?

My daughter has a lot of Barbie CD-ROM games. There is one game she has that is rather old, yet it is really one of her favorites, Barbie's Magic Genie Bottle. This game came with a life-sized magic genie bottle that acted as a joy-stick. It has a motion sensor jewel on the front that you move your hand in front of, and the top comes off. Each of these things perfomed a function in the game.

I'm sure you can imagine the appeal to an 8-year-old little girl

Now, the problem is, I've gotten a.......hmmm....complete system overhaul, I guess you could say. A new, larger hard-drive, new processor and new motherboard. The OLD system had a gameport on the back of the computer. The new one doesn't. It only has USB ports.

Please, SOMEBODY, tell me that there is some sort of adapter, or someway I can make this Genie Bottle work with this system! If any of you have never lived in a house with an 8-year-old, Barbie-obsessed little girl, you have no idea of the drama and histrionics that are occuring here.

Is there any way I can make a Magic Genie Bottle with a gameport plug work with a tower that now only has USB ports???

Somebody please save me!!

A few days ago I installed a USB 3.0 card (to be precise, this one: 2-Port USB 3.0 SuperSpeed PCI-E Controller Card - Free Shipping - DealExtreme). It uses the very common NEC ?PD720200 USB 3.0 controller. I installed the required drivers for Windows 7, and the card worked fine for the first day or so. but not since. Whenever I plug in a USB 3.0 external hard drive, I get a false "This device can perform faster..." message, as if I had plugged the drive in a USB 2.0 port.

The external drive I am using is a Western Digital MyBook Essential 1130. It is definitely a USB 3.0 drive, and came with the required USB 3.0 cable. While the USB 3.0 card was working, I got full-speed transfers to the limit of the hard drive's ability, about 90-100 MB/s. Now I can only get USB 2.0 speeds (33-34 MB/s). Windows insists I have the drive plugged into a USB 2.0 port even though it is plugged directly into the USB 3.0 card.

Things I tried so far:
-rebooting and complete power cycle. No difference.
-plugging the drive into one port or the other. Also no difference.
-Looked in Device manager. No help there either. The controller is recognized as a USB 3.0 device is using the proper NEC drivers.

Other info that may be important:
-No overclocking settings in use.
-I made sure the cable was plugged in all the way. It's in as far as it can go, but the ports will still only act like USB 2.0 ports.

This is very frustrating. How do I fix it? I might as well throw th... Read more

Hi everyone. My computer seems to have been slowing down a little. I know why. The reason is because I have added more running processes to the computer. I have more things running in the System Tray than before. This, of course, is likely taking up more of my RAM. I know that it isn't Spyware or a slow CPU (2.53 Ghz isn't very slow) that is slowing down my computer so I narrowed it down to my RAM. However, I am not certain about this. I don't know much about hardware. Anyway, I have 512 mb of RAM. Is there a way of determining whether more RAM would increase my computer's performance or not?

Vista Ultimate 64-bit, ASUS Rampage Formula motherboard, USB mouse and keyboard connected in back ports.

Two things happened: Avira antivirus warned me of some threats which I either ignored or deleted. Windows Update had some updates ready (although I'm not sure if it updated).

I turned off my PC for a couple of hours, turned it back on and realized that my USB keyboard was not working on the password screen.

I eventually unplugged it from the back and plugged it into the front, where it worked. However, my USB mouse did not work when plugged into the second front port, nor did it work when plugged into the front port in which the keyboard worked.

I accessed System Restore using my keyboard and restored to one day previously. When it finished, both keyboard and mouse worked, although I got a pop-up message alerting me that the "drivers for your device could not be installed." When I clicked "OK," the mouse stopped working again.

I have checked BIOS and both mouse and keyboard are recognized, so it does not appear to be a hardware issue.

This is an overly stupid question, I know, but I can't find out anywhere online.

I have a Sony Vaio (PCV-RX790G) with a Pentium 4 2.4GHz that I'm going to sacrifice to the gaming gods. I'm going to pull the processor and put it on a new mobo (with a 8x AGP slot so I can use the ridiculously expensive 7800GS I just bought, thinking the Vaio I was getting for free had a 8x, not 4x slot). I'm very sure it's a Socket 478, but want to be very sure before I buy the new mobo.

Also, how can I tell what series this is (i.e. Prescott, et cetera...or is Prescott AMD? either way, you know what I mean). I want to overclock it, hopefully, to something like 2.6 - 2.7GHz without water cooling (shouldn't be too hard - I'm going to have one harddrive, one floppy drive, and one DVD-ROM drive for gaming, a 7800GS AGP card, a 530-watt PSU, and nothing else, so I'll have plenty of room for fans).

Additionally, does anyone know if my Celeron 340 3.0GHz CPU will go into my Vaio mobo? I understand that if it even does I'll lose speed, but that's a cool computer, and I'd like to keep it running if at all possible. I'm guessing they're different chipsets because of the drastic differences in speed.

As always, any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A:How to determine my P4 chipset?

The best method is to go to www.intel.com they have a small program you can download that will identify your Chipset.Ofcourse you runit on the box you are investigating.
If you look in Device Manager>Veiw -Devices by Type, You will see all of your chipset model numbers , open "IDE/Atapi controllers, and "System devices"

You can also see the names listed for CPU"S at Intel then you can read the properties of each.
Prescott is definitly Intel not AMD

You should check the upgrade path for your current MB at SOny ,since they use proprietary components you would need to be sure of what the Mb's options are. You need its exact model number which will be on the Mb somewhere.

Is there is a way to determine if a file is 32 bit or 64 bit? Right-click>Properties doesn't seem to show anything. Neither does dir /a from the command line.

A:determine if a file is 32 bit or 64 bit

The biggest difference between the 32 bit and 64 bit applications is the change in data-type models. The C data-type model for 32 bit applications is the ILP32 model,
because the int and long types, and pointers are 32 bit data types. While the data-type model for 64 bit applications is the LP64 data, as the long and pointer types grow to 64 bits. To get to know if a file is 32 bit or 64 bit, you may need to use the disassembler
to analyze if the file uses 32 bit addressing or 64 bit addressing.
BTW, if you only mean identifying whether a 32bit operating system or 64bit operating system. Please visit:

1. Please note...It is much easier to find patterns, etc, when there is more than one crash.
We prefer you wait until you have at least two so that if one is corrupt the other probably wont be.

2. Avast can be a contributing cause of BSOD'S .
Please remove and replace with Microsoft Security Essentials AT LEAST TO TEST

I have a water cooled unit - 2 yr old Coolit closed system - and the CPU is not cooling and shutting down.
First suspect is the cooler but I believe the pump is running - the fan is not an issue.
If I power only the pump it sounds like it is turning - it hums and sounds like it spins down when I disconnect it (with my ear against it). Temp reached 125°C on TMPIN0, which I assume is the CPU temp prior to it shutting down. Core temps indicate about 13°C lower. I unplugged both the pump and the fan when temp was about 99°C and the temp remained the same ~99°C with 86°C core - system doing nothing except SIW monitor running.

Would it be very safe to assume something is wrong with the Coolit system?

It looks like what I have is a very inefficient heat pipe.

Why would the pump be running and not circulating any fluid???

I'm using xnView to display exr files. With the UAC at the hightest level, I always get a warning with starting the program or double clickng on an OpenEXR file. It would seem like there is some action xnView is taking to trigger this. How can I find out what action is is trying to perform that needs a higher privilege?

A:Is there a way to determine what causes a UAC warning?

Hello 7powerWannabe, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Anytime that you see this shield icon next to a link (Window Explorer) or at the bottom right corner of a file icon, it indicates that you will get a UAC prompt when you open it for it to Run as administrator (elevated).

Hope this helps,

My friend has a dell demension desktop that is running way slower than it should. I can't figure out why. Her CPU is a P4 2.66 GHz; with 1.25GB PC2700 RAM; 80G HDD (using 25%); The only hard ware installed is a printer, high speed modem, and ipod. I updated the drivers for those, and still no help. I also went through add/remove programs and got rid of those that she will never use, I did not remove any system critical programs, I'm an advanced user so I know what not to delete. I also went into the system tools and stopped some services for running auto on system boot. Like her Ipod, I set to manual, Printer (not spoolsvc) I set to manual, etc. I also ran a defrag on the HDD. Still, not much difference.

I know this PC should be running must faster than it does, I mean it honestly puts me in mind of a PC that has been upgraded from Win98 to run XP. My desktop is an IBM; P4 2.53GHz; 1.25 PC2700 RAM; 120GB HDD; with 50% HDD usage, printer, scanner, camerea, highspeed modem, digital voice recorder, and mp3 player on it. My system blows hers away! To be honest, my laptop that I bought in 2000, that is running Win2000p, blows hers away!

Can someone help me troubleshoot, or help me find a solution. That PC should be able to run as fast/good as mine, if not better!

I'm having a hell of a time figuring out why I get the BSOD. I have a thread here: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic34053.html

There I had my minidumps examined and it seemed to show signs of faulty RAM.

Then I tried one stick alone...no problems...then the other...no problems. Both again, and after several days, finally I get one crash.

I can't tell what it is anymore. A friend suggested maybe the mobo was having problems keeping up in dual channel, or that the mobo was set for a heavy demand on the RAM and when both are in, they can't work together fast enough.

I don't know...I'm close to getting new RAM, but would hate to still have the same problem.

I have 2GB (2X1GB) of Kingston PC3200 DDR 184 pin Value RAM. (Link to RAM given in thread listed above)

My PC is BRAND NEW, there seem to be no problems, brand new p/s, everything.

I'm half out of my head over this...I've had this system for nearly 3 months without stability!

The little light stays on saying my computer is downloading something. Sometimes it's a huge email file, sometimes it's Adobe Acrobat updating, sometimes it's something I've given permission to auto update (avast, firefox, thunderbird).

Is there a way to determine anything about what's coming through?

My current computer is 4 years old and has never had an upgrade (except for a graphics card which I bought because the integrated one stopped working)

At the moment my computer is struggling to run games as simple as minecraft (on the lowest possible graphic settings, after a full health check and even re-installing Windows 7). I don't need it to run amazing games like Call of Duty, but I would like my computer to be able to do more than just browse the internet, for as little cost as possible. Maybe run an RPG like Savage 2 or something similar.

Operating system: Windows 7 (Used to dual-boot with Ubuntu 11.04)

Motherboard: Foxconn RC4107MA
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 3GHz
RAM: 2 x 512MB
HDD: 80 GB (lol, I've never actually ran out of space though)
Graphics card: GeForce 7300 SE / 7200 GS

I think that's everything. All of these are disappointing but is it possible to upgrade it without buying a new computer? Thanks

I have the problem that when the weather is hot the laptop starts acting super slow mo after about 10 minutes after start up. I have a E6400 with a 2.93Ghz cpu, 256 onboard NVIDIA video and 4GB of RAM. I bought this used on eBay 2 years ago and am only now discovering why it is overheating.

I run Windows XP SP3 on it and I know that it is this laptop that is having problems because when I used the same hard drive on my D630 I had it heatup just as much(as hot) but it did not slow down in performance. I had it running for a day during our last hot spell with no hint of overheating. Unlike the D630 of the bottom surface being hot enough to fry an egg on half of the bottoms surface from the location of the cpu and to the middle, the E6400 is only hot where the ROM drive is.
I had taken the back panel off thinking that it would resolve the heat problem but after checking the fan area, re-applying the caked and cracked thermal grease on the cpu I discovered that the problem was not the cpu overheating. I did notice that when I touched the cpu's heat sink that it was cooler to the touch(it was warm before but was now cool, as though it wasn't transferring any heat) after replacing the thermal grease but I noticed that the heat from this machine was coming either from the ROM or from whatever is under the ROM drive.
The bios version of this machine is A28.
Any ideas how I can diagnose what the problem is? I am guessing that the processors in my D630's is actually a good... Read more

I often see minimum requirements for various software programs and one I see reference to quite often is OpenGL followed by a number, such as OpenGL 3.3 for example.

I have gathered that this has something to do with the graphics card, possibly it's drivers; am I right ?

How does one go about determining which OpenGL their equipment has.

Hey guys, I've been having this weird problem lately on my laptop which i have never experianced before.

What's happening is when my laptop gets some GPU load (watching YouTube etc.) the computer freezes for like 5 seconds.

My first though is that the laptop is overheating since i havent cleaned it in a while and so its slows down to a halt. Thats why i will clean my laptop first thing after i post this thread.

My second guess is that the cpu that I'm using is being done for. I have bought and i5 540M like 4 years ago and it might be at its end now.

And the final version of this is that my windows got too crowded up and I need to clean my laptop and reinstall W10.

Have any one of you experianced this type of problem and can help me out determening it and fixint it as well. Thanks in advance.

I just had to open my machine to visually inspect my RAM because neither CPU-Z nor Speccy were able to determine the manufacturer from the SPD. Anyone know why this would be so? For the record, I have one 8GB DIMM in the default slot under the keyboard and the memory chips are from Hynix.
