USB Mass Storage Issue Windows 7 x64

Q: USB Mass Storage Issue Windows 7 x64

I have finally given up so I am posting this. I have an issue in which no USB mass storage devices work on my system. I have tried my BlackBerry, IPod, multiple USB jump drives and a SATA dock. They system recognizes them but won?t install them and they show a yellow exclamation mark in the device manager. The USB ports work as I can use a webcam, scanner or mouse in the same port with no issues. I used a program called DriverMax to make sure all my drivers were up to date but that did not help. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Attached is a report from DriveMax of what drivers are installed.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Welcome to the Seven Forums! texusn

Most likely since the ports are known to be working something is preventing the detection process on those particular items. For the external dock and flash drives once plugged in you should be seeing a popup for running things or viewing the file content.

The two images here what to look for when in the Disk Management for either a drive when present in the docking station or when plugging in a flash drive and displayed in the DM there. The two screens attached here will show that the drive in the external enclosure is being seen as "online" otherwise a right click to find that option rather then setting it to offline would be needed as well as right clicking a second time to assign a drive letter.

This usually is all it takes at first to see any new drive or device initialized. When opening up an explorer afterwards you should be seeing the new drive icon with the drive letter selected in view. As far as DriverMax or any other 3rd party driver locator those are generally a waste of time to begin with since this is a Windows related item not a driver concern as far as detection and automatic installation to make things active. Once detected properly you would see a prompting if any drivers are needed.

Its not my hard drive as that is listed as ok under disc drives, so any ideas? Downloaded several drivers from the sony site, bt none seem to have any effect.

Hey Andy

You mobo probably has RAID support. you can find out be going into device manager to the unknown device>right click>go to proerties>details>pull down> hardware IDS. take the hardware ID and google it. It will tell you who the mfr is and then you can get the driver.

Hope this helps

Got an issue with trying to use my ipod as a usb mass storage device. I connect it, then it automatically syncs with my itunes, and ejects itself.
That means if I want to drag files over I have to get it done in this short period of time. Is there a way around this?

Thanks.

Hi, I have this issue going on since i installed windows 7--32 bit on a new partition.
Firstly In the 'device manager' I see 'Mass Storage Controller' which shows me a yellow sign of exclaimation & the following message pops up when 'right clicked' on 'properties' ;''The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)There is no driver selected for the device information set or element. To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver''

Secondly; In the 'device manager' below the 'Mass Storage Controller' name/driver it shows a name/driver called 'Unknown Device' again with yellow sign of exclaimation as mentioned above & When 'right clicked' on its properties I get the same error message as mentioned above.

Thirdly;None of the External buttons on my laptop for web cam, volume etc present are working. They only work with my vista OS but not with windows 7.

Now What drivers do u recommend & Where can i find the specific drivers for windows 7 beta to function without any further driver issues or other issues as mentioned above

Also When i plug in my usb external hard drive it shows me a message ''Do u want to scan the drive or continue without scanning'' & i tried both the ways/methods but still my files stored in usb e.xternal hard drive drive freeze & therefore dont respond immediately when i try to view or open them. Did reinstall, update everything but couldnt solve it, Would really appreciate any help. Thanks & looking forward for it.

Heya, I've got some issues with my usb devices. I bought my comp 2 years ago with a cordless keyboard, which was few weeks later the first usb device to go unrecognized.

The problem seems to result from computer shutting down due to a reason other than manually doing it. Pressing the power button if the comp freezes seems not to cause this, but such from overheating, or power blackout cause my computer to loose recognition on seemingly random usb device. I have 5 usb devices connected, and yesterday I received the fatal blow. My cable modem is connected through an usb wire, (because ethernet just doesn't seem to do its job). The computer shut down unnormally, resulting in the cable modem being reported as "unknown" under USB mass storage. Thusly I cant use my internet at home.

The problem though, seems to be sometimes fixed by moving the device to another port, which I did with my cordless keyboard. During some months, I went through all ports with the keyboard, and today, all ports report the device unknown. I would really like to fix this problem once and for all.

As short side story: I once tried to fix it without any knowledge of what I was doing, and I shut off one of the USB mass storage thingies that appear when windows reports the device not being recognized. It resulted in complete loss of control over my usb devices, meaning mouse and keyboard as well. Goddamn I had hard time fixing it. Continuing to work without any knowledge, I stumbled ... Read more

A:USB mass storage issue resulting from unnormal shutdown

I fixed the modem, somehow I had some driver for network stuff disabled and it formed connection through the ethernet cable when I enabled it. USB problem remains though.

Greetings all

I am about ready to dump this thing. I purchased it quite a few years ago and never had a problem with it until recently (about 5 days ago). Like an old shoe it just sat in a dark corner doing its thing. I suspect there was some unexpected issue that may have shut the "puter" down but I'm not sure since it belongs to my wife.

I have tried searching all over the net and various folks report having varing issues with their Mass Storage Devices and there never seems to be a resolution to any of them that I can find.

I did a clean up and re-installed the sofeware and all of that is ok but the problem is the control panel "System" entry identified as USB Mass Storage Device for the One Touch is not recognized and I am unable to fine a driver to remedy the issue.

I've searched the forum and can't find any resolutions that would help me.
IN a brand X forum someone suggested shutting the cpu down unplugging from electrical outlet and waiting for a few minutes before powering up. The funny thing here is 11 of 11 folks claim it resolved their issue.....but it surely didn't help me.

The device is associated with a Dell Pentium 4 ( I know, I know..an older box, (Lol) but it still works running XP Professional & Service Pack 3)

Any helpful suggestions are appreciated.

Hello, everyone =)

OK, well, I've got an external hard drive that I'm connecting to my USB port. I can mount it just fine in linux (mount /dev/sda1) but in Windows XP Pro, it appears in the system tray as a "USB Mass Storage Device" but I can't seem to access it from "My Computer" in any way. I'm a Linux user who is rather new to Windows, but I still have a feeling that this is not my own problem. Anyone have any ideas of what is going on?

Thanks in advance

A:Windows XP Pro not seeing a USB Mass Storage Device

You may not have a windows filesystem installed on the drive yet. If that's not the problem, try this fix:

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

Hello,

My father has purchased a laptop a month ago or so, and it runs windows vista. I wanted to install windows xp on the laptop, but as soon as the windows xp cd started to load windows on the dos mode I recieved a message stating that my driver cannot be identified or something like that. So I called the gateway tech support and they told me that this laptop has this message that i recieved because of their policy and that you are really not supposed to downgrade and all that nonsense.

However, the technician also told me that it is possible to install the windows xp on my laptop, and all I needed was something called MASS STORAGE CONTROLLER in order for the laptop to identify the hardrive or driver.

Would anyone be able to tell me how I can successfully install windows xp on my laptop so that I can be ready to use it for school soon.

Thank you,

Hello, I have a problem with Windows 7 Build 7100. I am running a Fujitsu Amilo Li 1818 laptop. The installation went fine, I had to download a driver for the WLAN card, but everything else works perfectly. However, when I connect a USB thumb drive, or an external USB HD, I can't access it. Windows 7 recognises the device, installs a driver, and the device is visible in Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers. It doesn't show up in Computer > Devices with Removable Storage. In Device Manager, the USB HD shows up under Disk drives and it says "The device is working properly" and the driver is up to date. However, when the USB HD is connected, it also creates an "Unknown device" entry under other devices in the Device Manager. This part says "The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28), and clicking on Update Driver doesn't work ("Windows was unable to install your Unknown Device"). I have installed the Vista chipset drivers from the Fujitsu website. Any ideas how I can fix this? Why does Device Manager recognise the USB HD but also create an "Unknown Device" entry?

A:Windows 7 won't recognize USB mass-storage devices

I've got it fixed now, after reading this: http://forum.freecompromo.com/viewtopic.php?t=181 The solution: step 1! Go into C:\ and create a folder called usbdriver step 2! Go into C:\WINDOWS\INF and copy the whole contents step 3! COPY ALL THAT INTO C:\usbdriver step 4! THEN when your asked to look for the driver! and vista cannot find it POINT IT TO THAT FOLDER C:\USBDRIVER and click ok. Looks like it was a bug from Vista. I have a rather strange problem with my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  Everything seems to work fine except for USB mass storage devices.  I have USB keyboard, mouse and even a USB audio (wireless headset) all working fine on the computer.  But
any USB external drive, thumdrive or USB card reader with flash cards inserted into the USB port of my computer won't work.
Windows keeps reporting that it is unable to find the driver.  When I go into the Device Manager console and choose to manually update the driver, then point it to the C:\Windows (with search for sub-directories enabled), it detects the USB Mass Storage
driver but complains that it is unable to load it.  The exact message is this:  Windows found driver software for your device but encountered error while attempting to install it.  USB Mass Storage Device.  The system cannot find the file
specified.
This happens to ALL USB Mass storage device, and it doesn't matter which port I plug the device into.
Here's the weird thing, I have VMware Workstation installed on this computer and if I power on a VM that runs Windows 7 32-bit as the Guest OS and connect the USB storage devices to the guest OS via VMware Workstation, the USB storage devices work!
So it would appear that the USB ports are functioning properly but for some reasons, my Windows 64-bit is unable to load the driver.
Any idea how to fix this besides a "nuke it from orbit" and format/reinstall Windows?... Read more

A:Windows 7 64-bit not loading USB mass storage driver

Found the problem.  For some strange reasons, a few files in the C:\Windows\inf directory went missing, 2 of those was usbstor.inf and usbstor.PNF.  What I did was to copy the C:\Windows\inf directory from my properly functioning laptop to this
problematic computer (skipping all existing files) and it resolved the problem.

Weird though, I never deleted anything from the INF directory, not sure how those USB Mass Storage driver files went missing in the first place.

The problem originated after i tried to "low format" a USB memory that a coworker asked if i could fix, it had a "Protect against writing" message, i was not able to format it, but i was able to copy stuff from it, but not add new stuff to it. I tried several google tutorials, changed registry values and run some CMD commands, found the same information on several sites with no luck. The USB memory remained "locked".

Long story short, i gave up, when i disconnected the USB drive i noticed all my shortcuts from the desktop disappeared? and also all my bookmarks in Firefox?, i was astonished.

Now 4-6 days ago i wanted to copy ome videos and a portable version or MPC-HC, but then i connected my USB 32gb memory flash ( my personal USB memory, not the one i was trying to format) into my 3.0 port, and well... it was not found in my computer folder !!. I tried to look into the manage device > storage device to see if it was a problem with the "letter label" but no! is not there either!. And yes, the USB worked on my other laptop as normal. All my other USB peripherals work perfectly, mouse, keyboard etc.

Next i went into device manager, and found a yellow triangle as shown in the picture, and when i clicked the "show hidden devices" i found that there was the name of the usb that i tried to low format !! greyed out!, I instantly uninstall it with no luck from the device manager, is not there anymore since i saw it, but even so ... hey guys, im new here (signed up solely to ask this question cuz it looks like a pretty cool site) and i need some advice

so i built my own computer out of purchased parts about a year ago but its been having freezing problems until a few months ago (bad hard drive lol!). i havent noticed this problem til recently (due to the constant efforts to diagnose the freezing/crashing) but my computer seems to eject any usb mass storage device when i try to say.... copy files into or out of whatever drive is connected, whether its a flash drive or my phone's sd card (which is connected via usb).

For example: this happened today - i tried to drag an .avi file out of a SanDisk cruzer and the windows dialog box pops up to tell me that it has begun copying. after 5 minutes, it is still 'Calculating...' the ETA and i notice that the explorer window that displays the content of the drive has been turned into that washed-out, unresponsive state. Running Windows 7, if i try to close the window, i get the choice to either close the program, wait for it to respond, or some other thing.

this happens if i plug any usb drive into any usb port (front or back) on my computer. Wow that was a lot to write. well if anyone has come across this sort of problem before or can help point me in the right direction,

PLEASE REPLY

Have recently received delivery of a new computer (based around the Athlon dual core 64 chip) and am looking to transfer my existing external hard drive and DVD-rom. However when I connect up my external HDD, Windows XP media centre edition 2005 initially recognises it as a new USB device but after a short period of searching returns the message - hardware not installed because wizard cannot find necessary software.

According to installation leaflet for the external drive, the driver for the hard disk is already built into the windows XP system. From what I understand the driver it should be loading is - USB 2.0 Hub

(When I attach the external drive to my old machine it initially recognises it as a USB device then shortly after it identifies it as a USB mass storage device. The new machine only gets as far as identifying it as a USB device.)

Is there any way of forcing windoew on the new machine to recognise it as a USB hub / mass storage device?

Grateful for any advice on this.

What do the august contributors to this forum think would be a sensible series of steps to make sure the switchover is smoothe and which hopefully avoids a reinstall?

I'm working with a bootloader program for a product with my company. The code designates the USB connected product to act as a Mass Storage Device with 64Kb of memory. This is important because the image to be loaded is exactly 64Kb. This process
works perfectly for Windows 7. On Windows 8 and Windows 10 when looping at the properties of the Mass Storage Device there is 1Kb of (1024 bytes) of used space when the device should be completely free. I'm not sure where this mystery 1Kb comes from. Does
anyone know the differences between Windows 7 and Windows 8/10 with regards to initializing a Mass Storage Device?

To make this problem even weirder I discovered that if the computer goes into Sleep mode and is woken up from Sleep mode. The the Mass Storage Device is fixed. It shows 64Kb of free space and the mysterious 1Kb is gone. What happens to the USB drive
in sleep mode? Is there a reset that occurs that causes the computer to reread the correct storage space?

When I unplug the USB and re plug it back it the problem returns. And is again fixed by a Sleep mode cycle.

Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

We recently purchased a FujiFilm FinePix 1300 digital camera. This camera uses USB Mass storage to access the smartmedia. As of this writing, I have installed and un-installed the driver countless times in any type of boot that I could come up with! No matter what is running, be it my few startup programs or just SysTray and Explorer, the computer ALWAYS locks up tighter than a drum whenever we try to access the camera. So tight that I have to overide via the power button to shut down. I'm running a HP Pavilion 6630, 256MB ram, Win98se. This is really frustrating! As I was successful the first try at installing it on my HP pavilion 4430 at work. It ran like a charm! And I might mention, that program wise, this computer and mine at work are almost identical in the installed programs. I use my home machine for work also!

Anyone have any ideas before I throw in the so called proverbial towel, and return the camera for a Sony????
Thanks!

Normally if I can not stop the harddisk, (even if all the apps and windows are closed), I go to sleep mode, remove the harddisk and wake the OS up. But last time I tried something different. I disabled the USB Mass storage (I read this some where on the net and they said to enable it after removing the disk) device under device manager. But I can not see that icon/device back in the list to enable it back.
Now if I plug in my harddisk OS won't do anything. If I plug other devices like USB mode, it works fine. How can I re-enable it back ? I tried to search , but could not find a solution (there was one solution for XP, as it was registry stuff not sure whether the same works for 7). I tried penyuusb, but due to some problem it is not getting activated (free software).

Can someone please help me ?

Thanks
Naveen

I've been trying to download pics from my digital camera for a few months now. The pc acts like the USB cord is not plugged in. When I go to intall new hardware it doesn't find the Camera plugged in and try to install it on its own like I believe it should. (I may be wrong.) So anyway, I go to add/troubleshoot USB Mass Storage and it says: This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24). So, what am I doing wrong? It worked fine until one day the USB cord was unplugged. (At least I THINK that's what caused all this crap.)
Pleaaaseeeeeee help me!!!

A:USB Mass Storage Gone..where did it go!!?

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

If I have lots of files (more than 70) on a DVD-RW. Windows takes ages to read the disk and be ready to access the files.

Is there an optimum way of doing this that makes Windows happier?

I update the files fairly regularly.

I do have DVD buring software. (In any case, if I use Windows to update the disk, it finalises the disk.)

I remember with earlier versions of Windows using a UDF reader, and then there was no speed problem.

A:Using DVD-RWs for mass storage

I am not sure I understand what yu are asking. I think you are asking about using DVDs for backups. If that is correct, I would suggest investing in an external hard drive. They are relatively cheap right now and all of the information is in one place. I have 4 externals and use them daily. Redundancy of backups is the key. esata and USB 3.0 if you have them are great and much faster.
If you decide to go that route, look into using microsoft sync toy. Once you set it up, just push the run button and it will syncronize any folder or entire hard drive you want. I use it for my user folder. Best of all, it's free.

Hi, and thanks in advance.

I have been searching hard for this USB mass storage device driver. Just staring at my device driver window with that yellow ( ! ) has given me an empty void in my life that needs to be filled.

And believe me it's even tougher to find on Google. I've run into false files claiming to be the driver. My usb slot has been treating me like crap for a heck of a long time now. It's time it to meet its maker. So Alas i have given up and decided to ask the pros for some help. Can you help me with this issue?

I was using a USB 256mb Massa Storage to transfer files, all of a sudden the computer cannot see the device. In the Device Manager, Universal serial bus controllers it stated "Unkown device", this also happens with other mass storage devices. Could somebody please help geet the computer to re-recognise the devices.

hi. you've probably seen this before but i'm new here so i'll just post it again. i have this memory stick: it's a 4GB cruezer, ready-boost compatible but i use it to transfer files from one computer to another. it worked until 2 days ago and now, all of a sudden, my systems don't recognise it anymore. i have both vista and xp and it works with neither of them. at first i thought it was the drivers but can that be the reason on both my rigs? i haven't tried much and i'm open to any suggestion. thanks in advance for your help. daniel

Do you here any sound when you plug it in? Like the USB connection sound, but slightly different?

If not, then worst case scenario is it might have died. Happened to mine a couple of months ago. They are fragile and can get zapped easily with things like an ESD.

hello all i have what i consider a hard problem but someone here can help me with. i puchased a usb 2.0 mass storage h/d. been using it for a while with no problems, i let a friend borrow it for loading some files, format and reload saved files. he told me that he installed what he wanted to keep, then formatted his hardrive with mine still plugged in. when he attempted to use it after the reloade windows would not allicate a drive letter for the drive. i think the hardrive just needs formatted and re-partitioned, but i can't figure out how too do it because there is no signature to the drive. i have tried usb boot drivers for dos and got an error usb target not found. the drive does show up in devise manager but i can't access from windows. i am running windows 2k pro on service pack 4 , the format was done with win xp pro corperate. all i want too no is how too resetup the drive. any answers would be appreciated. thanks THE NUT.

I am having trouble with my IPOD I was wondering if this error was the reason it wasn't working?
This is what error message comes up for the mass storage device:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because there is a duplicate device already running in the system. (Code 42)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

A:Mass Storage Device

I always reply to the head scratchers. Please un-plug/turn off all your USB devices EXCEPT the Ipod, your keyboard, and mouse. This includes your printer, and any Jump Drives you may have plugged in.

1.) Open your Device Manager
-Right click on my computer
-Select 'properties'
-Click the 'hardware' tab
-Press Device Manager

2.) Do you see your Ipod on the list? If so, uninstall your IPOD. I don't have an IPOD so i don't know what group it would be stored in, but I would assume your Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

3.) Download a new Ipod driver or load the Ipod driver off your cd like you did the first time you installed it.

I hope this fixes it.

Recently downloaded a Verizon 4G LT# USB Modem for wireless internet. Worked fine for a week or so. Now, I get two messages. "Windows needs to install software for your mass storage controller or your device will not be detected." Second message, "Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact network administrator."

This is a home laptop.

The other day, I was reinstalling win XP pro, and when I finished , the computer have started ignoring my mass storage devices. Just like that.
No iPod, No flash disk and no camera.
It does recognize a new device is being plugged into the USB port, but it doesn't show up on my computer/explorer/any other program which needs access to it.

Pretty similar to the problem further down the page, although I am pretty sure I haven't fried any of my appliances. Help?

Where can i download a usb mass storage device/driver or how can i get it back on my pc? I believe i deleted it because i remember removing it from add/remove programs and now i can't see it in device manager.

Before and after i deleted it my Iomega External USB CDRW Drive has suddenly not been detected by my computer(was not detected even when i had the usb mass storage device so this is not why it's not being detected). While i was removing other programs that i thought might have been causing this i accidently deleted USB Mass Storage Device from Add/Remove programs and i believe that is a driver i need for my usb plugs to work. As far as the cdrw drive goes i have tried everything on the Iomega troubleshooting page except for one thing that involves the usb mass storage device but now i don't seem to have it on my computer and i was wondering if there was somewhere i could download it or how i would get it back.

A:Need help with usb mass storage not working.

Hello ,

you need to rebuild your USB tree

try this

now what i you need to do is go to your (device manager)

now once there you will want to select from the toolbar of the window(veiw) then a drop down menu / from it you will select (show all hidden devices)

now if you see any (red or yellow) quotation marks , make a note of what they

now scroll down to your (USB Device Tree) and uninstall all that it is shown / then shut your sysem down compleatly then unplug all (USB Devices) then rebot your system 2 to 3 times

this will cause Windows to rebuild the (USB Device Treee & Drivers)

now try hooking up your (USB Devices) and see if they work properly

If you have a USB mouse & keyboard then you need to switch over to PS/2 to perform these steps

let me know how it works

When I put files [eg songs in this case] onto the USB device and then stick it in another computer it lets me play them but it says I can only do so while its plugged in. I got it because I was sure I would be able to copy them onto the second machine. It's not the write-protect switch that's preventing me...I've tried that approach.
I may be able to copy them with WMP by "copying the now playing" but that would be too slow.[if it even works]
Any help and suggestions appreciated.
Thanks.
