Norton Ghost 12 Error After Backup

Q: Norton Ghost 12 Error After Backup

Hi,

I'm using Norton Ghost 12 with Windows XP. Whenever I create a new recovery point, I get the following error at the end:

-Unable to read from file.
--Error EBAB03F1: The system cannot find the file specified.

The back up appears to have worked and I can browse with Recovery Point Browser, but I'm still concerned that if I actually had to restore my system then it might not work because of this error.

Does anyone know what this error means?

Thanks,
Joe

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

1. Make sure the drive you are copying to has a drive letter assigned.

Hi. I just purchased Norton Ghost 12 and when I try to do a backup, I get the following error:

-Error E7C3000F: Device \\.\SymantecSnapshot0 cannot read 152 sectors starting at LBA 6159272
--Error EBAB03F1: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

I contacted Symantec and they told me to check the "Ignore bad sectors during copy" box in advance options window. It will do a backup, however, are those bad sectors going to mess up a complete system restore if my computer crashes? Or, are those sectors information that I will be loosing if it my system crashes? I ran a scan disk on my Seagate external hard drive that I am using to backup my system. Also, do I need to reformat my Seagate to clean out any of the backups I have from a previous program that I was using?

Can anyone please tell me what I need to do?

Thank you so very much!!

Hello,
Can anyone help me with a question regarding Norton Ghost and re-installing a CD backup set.
A few weeks ago i made a complete backup of my C:\ drive with Norton Ghost onto 4 CD's and thought that i would not have to use them.

But i installed a program that caused some problems and after trying to solve it, i think that i made it worse.
So i thought that i would use the CD backup set instead, and put the C:\ drive back to the state it was in before i installed the troublesome program.

But when i did this, my Norton Internet Security 2001 program instead of coming up with the 305 days left as it was when i did the backup, it came up with the days left that were on the C:\ drive before i did the re-install (234 days left).

The question that i want to know is how does this happen?

As i thought that the CD backup overwrote all of the files on the C:\ drive, and it would install Norton Security back to the days left as it was when i did the backup?

As all of the other programs i have on the backup went back to the settings that were on the day i made the backup, but for some reason this happens only with Norton Internet Security.

Can i do anything about this happening, so that the days re-install to the days left that are on the backup?

Thanks in advance for any help.

A:Norton Ghost Backup

The Norton software uses the date it was originally installed and compares it to the current date...it's probably set in the registry or in a custom dll they created expressly for this purpose. It would be different if you had done a fresh install of Windoze and a fresh install of the trialware AV software.

You haven't told us what version of Ghost you need help with!
If it's the latest version (Ghost 15), the manual is here in PDF format:
http://uk.norton.com/support/product...pvid=nghost_15

To download it to your PC, right click the link on that page and choose "Save as" or "Save link as". You need Adobe Reader to read the manual.

When you have made a backup of a computer system with Norton Ghost, you cannot use that backup on a different computer unless it has exactly the same hardware components and it's hard drive is the same capacity or larger.

I am using Norton Ghost to make a backup of my hardrive. The problem that I have is that both drives are exactly the same model and size. When using Ghost it only show the two drives. Problem is I am not sure which ones is the original and which one is the backup drive. If I proceed with the wrong drive I am going to lose all the info I am trying to backup.Any help please ??

A:Solved: Using Norton Ghost for Backup ??

I always make my partitions different sizes so I can tell them apart in Ghost. So you might consider shrinking one just slightly with a partitioning tool such as GParted.

You would then have to change your backup procedure from "drive to drive" to "partition to partition".

I'm running Norton Ghost 12 on a new Vista laptop and am having some problems. A month ago a full recovery point backup worked fine, and weekly incremental backups have run each week with no problems. The total disk usage on the drive is around 30Gb and I have a Western Digital external USB drive that I'm backing up onto. I've also run a file and folders backup that completed normally.

However, with a new month rolling round Ghost tries to create a new full recovery point. It gets to between 33% and 48% (having created a file with zero size) and then just sits for hours (I've left it overnight at 33% and it hadn't moved by the following morning).

I can't see any errors in the logs and the disk was defragmented a couple of days ago, so I don't know why Ghost seems to be hanging.

Any ideas on how to work out what's happening would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Patrick,

Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team responding to your posting.

Since the server that you were sending the backup to had a power outage, the backup most likely did not complete, or other problems may have occurred on the server, which are preventing the backup from completing. This power-outage may also have affected your Windows XP machine as well, and may have corrupted the Norton Ghost application.

Make sure that you can access the server in Windows, where you are sending the Ghost backup. If you can access the server, launch Ghost and create a new backup job and try to send the backup to server again.

If the Ghost application is still having ... Read more

Hi, after reading that I should have an external backup, I bought a Nexstar 3 USB 3.0. compatible with USB 2.0. This in part as I lost my last Computer during an electrical storm about thirty miles away. I just want to back up about once a week.
I also bought Norton Ghost. Norton Ghost seeming to be working ok. Question: why do I need it? Apparently with Windows 7 I can just transfer Data to the external disc. I have to ask this question as the instructions coming with Norton Ghost don't seem to have been written by a human being. I should like to uninstall Norton Ghost , reformat the external and start again. Is this OK?

Thanks

I'm a big fan of disk imaging software, but I'm not overly fond of Ghost for exactly the reason you state. The best of breed is Acronis True Image, but it's not free. An excellent free alternative is Macrium Reflect. I'd suggest using either of those on a regular basis.

hey yall!!

We just got Norton Ghost 14.0 program works pretty great, backs up on time all the time. no issues with recovering.

i do have one issue tho. we made a ghost copy of the primary drive to a secondary one. just a normal hdd in an external enclosure. now.. i enabled the booting option on the drive so it will copy windows and pretty much make an exact copy of the drive. however when i went to test the drive to boot up the pc it gets the xp loading screen then just restarts the machine over and over and over and over and...... well you get the idea..

i called Norton and they said to just pop in a xp cd and repair the windows. i tried that didnt work. in the middle of the "repair" it got all the way to finishing then the setup said there was no disc all of a sudden?

any ideas?

Not all PC's can boot from USB. You will also need to change the boot order in the BIOS.

As for your current condition, if you changed the boot order, you will now need to change it back.

I'm only new to Norton Ghost 12 (i know the new version is 14 but I'm happy with 12.

Used space on C:\ is 11GB according to Local Disk properties, when I used Norton Ghost to backup C:\ its backup file is only 6GB did it (or I) do it correctly.

I need some help and guidance in making (system restore) recovery Disk/s either CD or DVD, there are programs like Microsoft Office that is preinstalled and I don't want to lose that . Also to help in having to reinstall drivers and updates etc I can just use the recovery disk to restore the system and use it straight away like the recovery disks you used to get from Acer.

I went into "Create Custom Recovery Disk" it then asks you for Symantec Recovery Location" No matter what I try it just tells me "Invalid Symantec Recovery Disk Location. Please specify a valid path to a Symantec Recovery Disk.

I have Norton Ghost 2002, I created a boot floppy and can boot and do backup to my HP 6000 SCSI tape backup (4G/8G). The backup method I used off the boot floppy is to backup the HD onto an image and select the HP device. However, the data on my HD is larger than 4G and Norton Ghost does not asked for additional tape. NG just indicates that writing at end of tape device and stop. (previously under 4G is fine but now I'm putting more data and applications and needs more than 4G).

Is there an option that I need to set within the NG boot floppy in order to backup using my HP DDS tapes?

SCSI controller is Adaptec,
Tape backup is HP 6000 external (4G/8G)

Norton Ghost recognized both and can backup/write upto 4G, but does not prompt me to enter additional tapes. Is there an option to have NG prompt for additional tapes?

Thank you.

Mike

A:Norton Ghost Backup (boot floppy)

Found the answer at Symantec's web site (knowledge base, keyword=SCSI). It seems NG will not span the image file across SCSI DAT tape drive. So it seems only one tape is use during backup, with 4G, it's not very much. Guess I have to look for a larger DAT drive or delete some files on my HD to below 4G.

I'm trying to create a full system backup. If I attach my verbatim external drive I can do the backup. If however I attach a less expensive internal drive (seagate 400gb) via usb2 cable converter all will go okay for a few minutes and the I will get a white screen. The time involved varies, sometimes the white screen appears in the beginning of the backup, sometimes at the end. When it appears all backing up stops.

This happens with Norton Ghost 15 and with Acronis 2012. The drive I am backing up to has been wiped clean and is formatted. The drives I am trying to backup have been scanned for viruses.

What do I do? I have looked it up on the WWW and haven't found anything.

My system Specs are available by clicking the computer icon above. The reason this is important to me is because I am running out of space on the Verbatim and don't want to buy another drive. This operation has worked successfully in the past but not now. Please help. Thanks.

This is my first attempt at using Ghost, so I know little or nothing about it. I'm hoping some of you guys with experience with it can help.

There are also what I deem to be side affects from the failed image creation.

I have attempted to create an image (to my slave drive) twice and each time, as Norton restarts the machine to create the image, the machine simply reboots but not fully. It gets to the point of detecting the drives and I get the "Missing Operating System" error.

Last night I had to use the procedures described here to boot back to Windows. The procedure described here did not work as when I typed in the commands I kept getting "Invalid Drive Specification" and I tried almost every letter in the alphabet. LOL
The possible causes of this are described here. The only one of those that applies to my situation seems to be that my BIOS is not compatible with PC DOS (The option I chose each time rather that MS DOS).
Now to the strange part. Last night I finally managed to delete the virtual partition and reset my C: (Primary with OS) back to active using the Gdisk procedures from the link above. I went to bed, as it was late, assuming everything was OK. All I did was check a few things. I need some assistance with an error I'm getting with Norton Ghost version 12.

Briefly, let me explain some background on the problem.

I have several Ghost Images that were made for a variety of Dell Optiplex systems. These images are stored on a network file server. Previously, I had been using a Ghost 10 disk to boot from the CD and launch the Ghost recovery utilities. I would start the Ghost Networking Utilities, Map a Network Drive to the location of the images then copy the image to the new PC.

2 weeks ago my company began purchasing a new Dell model (Optiplex GX755). I created the image of this system with no problems. However, when I tried to boot the systems from the Ghost 10 CD to image the other devices the computers blue-screened explaining that there was some problem with the hard drive (either a virus or bad HD sector). Considering these PC's were fresh out of the box I thought this unlikely and called Dell Technical Support.

After a long conversation with their support we discovered that the GX755's are using a new SATA driver for the Hard Drives and that Ghost 10 did not have this driver in it's library. Considering that Norton had recently release version 12 I thought (perhaps naively) that purchasing the latest version would correct the problem.

In one sense I was correct.

Ghost 12 boots from CD just fine and loads all of its utilities with no problem. Unfortunately it has created a new issue. I am unable to map a network drive.

Does anyone know what error number (662) represents and how I can solve this problem?

When Norton Ghost switches to PC DOS mode, here is some info that pops up:

A:Norton Ghost 2003 Error - Help!

Hi radar2000, found this reference on Symantec's support site:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...ntact_tscs_solve.html&src=sg&pcode=ghost&svy=

Which basically tells you this:

Error: "Error 662 Cannot create image file" while saving an image to a CD-RW drive

Situation:
When you use Ghost to save an image file directly to a CD-RW drive, you see the message "Error 662 Cannot create image file" and the process fails.

The CD-ROM discs have data already written to them. During the cloning operation, you checked an option that instructs Ghost to erase the CD-ROM discs before writing to them.

Solution:
This problem sometimes happens when you have Ghost use the Fast Erase option rather than Full Erase.

To resolve the problem, choose the Full Erase option in Ghost. If the operation still fails, use your Windows CD burning software to completely erase the CD-ROM discs before using them with Ghost.

Hopefully, this easy solution solves your problem.

Hi guys,

Great forum you have here, looks like you've helped tons of people. Hoping you can help me with a problem that's got me going pretty good. I'll give all the info so post may get long, please bear with me...

System is homebuilt, P3 850, 1 GB RAM, XP Pro (previously Win 98 SE), running flawlessly for several years. Currently no network, dial-up connection. I've been using Drive Image 7 for backups since the app came out, zero problems.

Last week I changed a few things..... Yes, I had a backup.

First I upgraded NAV to version 2005, then I installed XP SP2. So far so good, made a backup of a working system.

Went on with life as normal for a few days then one day tried to make a fresh backup. Drive Image 7 (7.03) failed to read the drives and gave the error "catastrophic failure". Clicking reconnect gave the same error.

Tried the following, in order:

Reboot, soft and hard, reinstall DI 7, reinstall DI 7.03 update, remove NAV 2005, remove Windows hotfix 834707 (installed by SP2 auto-update at some point), remove SP2. Nothing worked although the DI error message changed to "Remote procedure call failed to execute" (still acted the same though).

Next I got a copy of Norton Ghost 9. It failed to install, guess what the error was (CF)....

Investigation showed that the Drive Image "V2i Protector" service was not loading. Manual starting of the service also failed.

Whew, lucky I have that backup, right? Restore the s... Read more

A:Drive Image 7/Norton Ghost error after SP2

Hiya and welcome

Just looked at the V2i Protector, and it says it can't be loaded on the same machine as Drive Image:

Can Drive Image 7.0 and V2i Protector be installed on the same computer?
The 834707 update is this one:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-038.mspx

Which is an update for Internet Explorer.

This bit:

Next I got a copy of Norton Ghost 9

Is this a full version that you've bought, or a copy downloaded from a p2p program (if so, can't help on that)

What happens if you just install Drive Image on its own, is that okay? Or Norton Ghost?

I am running Norton Ghost 10 on a PC with Windows XP and I keep getting an unrecoverable system error at some time during the backup. I start the backup, and when I come back later, my system has rebooted itself and has a message that says Windows had an unrecoverable error.

Any idea why this may be happening?

Hi cashonly,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

The problem you are having can be due to a hard drive going bad, a problem with Windows, or another hardware/software problem.

I would first suggest that you run the Windows "chkdsk" utility 2-3 times , as well as the defrag and file cleanup utilities to see if it makes a difference.

Since this issue is fairly unique, I would like to offer to you that I formally escalate this issue to our technical support specialists. They will contact you directly to resolve the problem you are having.

In order to do so, please check your Private Message box for further instructions.

Thanks,
Mike

I need some assistance with an error I'm getting with Norton Ghost version 12.

Briefly, let me explain some background on the problem.

I have several Ghost Images that were made for a variety of Dell Optiplex systems. These images are stored on a network file server. Previously, I had been using a Ghost 10 disk to boot from the CD and launch the Ghost recovery utilities. I would start the Ghost Networking Utilities, Map a Network Drive to the location of the images then copy the image to the new PC. This process had been essentially flawless for about 2 years.

2 weeks ago my company began purchasing a new Dell model (Optiplex GX755). I created the image of this system with no problems. However, when I tried to boot the non-imaged systems from the Ghost 10 CD the computers blue-screened explaining that there was some problem with the hard drive (either a virus or bad HD sector). Considering these PC's were fresh out of the box I thought this unlikely and called Dell Technical Support.

After a long conversation with their support we discovered that the GX755's are using a new SATA driver for the Hard Drives and that Ghost 10 did not have this driver in its library. Considering that Norton had recently released version 12 I thought (perhaps naively) that purchasing the latest version would correct the problem.

In one sense I was correct.

Ghost 12 boots from CD just fine and loads all of its utilities with no problem. Unfortunately it has created a new issue. I ... Read more

This sounds very fishy to me I wouldnt trust this. Try and run a virus scan first. You could always connect a slave drive and move all of your important files.

I recently got Norton ghost 14.0 and decided to use the option where i copy my exact harddrive that i currently use, to one of my older blank harddrives that had failed me once before. I formatted it, and began the process, i went out for a bit and came back, it was stuck saying 29 mins left. and an error message saying

-Error EC8F17B3: Cannot complete copying of (C:\) drive.
--Cannot copy source drive to destination location.
---Error E7C30010: Device \\?\Volume{e3a773e0-8a4d-11dd-96f0-806d6172696f}\ cannot write 4096 sectors starting at LBA 103578640.

-----Error EBAB03F1: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

Whats up with that? The drive was basically corrupted so i stopped using it and got a new one. i figured a good formatting was all it needed. No sense in tossing a perfectly good seagate 320 gb. lol

P.S when i get this error, the drive dissapears from my computer. But it shows up in device manager

I suspect that your A: drive is file protected, and GHOST is trying to write to it's log file to tell you about the errors in the sectors mentioned.

I just purchased 9.0.

I installed it on a Fujitsu C2240 Lifebook (XPP SP2) which has a wireless connection to my home LAN. The LAN server (a Dell Optiplex GX1 with Win2K SP4) has a Seagate 160GB USB drive that I'm using for backups. Windows' Backup Utility can make a regular backup from the notebook to that drive without a problem, but when I went to use Ghost to make an image of my notebook's hard drive (using the Wizard), I got an error message after selecting a folder on the Seagate USB drive as the destination:

Error E7D1001D: Unable to open [\\server\share\folder]. Error 000004F1: The system detected a possible attempt to compromise security. Please ensure that you can contact the server that authenticated you.
(0xE7D1001D)

I have full administrative privileges and can otherwise access all aspects of the server from my notebook. There is nothing I can find on Symantec's site referencing this error message and, even though the site says online tech support for 9.0 "will end May 31, 2006," trying to access it gives a message saying it's no longer available. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks.

A word of caution to those backing up their hard disks with GHOST 2002 when they have Windows XP installed.... it doesn't always work....

1) My brand new computer came pre-installed with Windows XP HOME Edition... and immediately backed it up with Ghost - even though I hadn't installed any other software - this way I have a clean backup of my computer. The GHOST BACKUP onto 2 CD's worked perfectly.

2) Next I installed some software, Antivirus, Email, Downloaded updates etc etc... and after doing that, I backed it up using GHOST 2002 AGAIN... on to 2 more CD's...
so how I had 2 backups of my computer.... this backup worked fine too.

3) I had purchased Windows XP Proffessional earlier, so I decided to install Windows XP Proffessional on my computer to see the differences between XP HOME and XP Proffesional (there's not much difference... you won't even notice the difference until to start to LOOK INTO SMALL THE DETAILS such as password protecting files / folders, and some more advanced networking options).
THIS BACKUP TOOK 3 CDS USING GHOST 2002.
Later, I decided to TEST each one of my CDs to see if they restored my computer properly.... so I tried GHOSTING another computer with my backup CD's....

The FIRST GHOST BACKUP restored perfectly.
The SECOND GHOST BACKUP restored perfectly.

THE THIRD GHOST BACKUP crashed on the 2CD with an error saying "could not restore file xxxxxxx.xxx" (I can't remember the file name)....

Hi all,
I avoid writing posts of my software problems, but for this one I couldn't find a solution.

I have an Acer laptop (still in warranty)
its HDD failed. The HDD is 320GB sata, toshiba.
I removed the original HDD and I want to temporarily use an USB 160GB WD drive.

I have a backup of C drive on 5 DVDs using norton Ghost.
I've never attempted recovery with it, until now.
(drive C is 37.7 GB, drive d is the remainder to 320 GB).

I followed all instructions for Ghost, I removed all partitions in the 160GB drive.
Ghost created 1st partition 37.7 and deployed all windows and other files there.
everything was successfully completed with all verifications.

BUT!

on attempt to boot from the newly prepared HDD I get this error:
"
File \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc000000f

"Insert Win installation disk ... etc"
"
I inserted win7 disk, selected recovery, It recovered somethng,
then after I boot from the new HDD I get windows startup screen, but followed by restart repeated forever.
I repeated everything from scratch, the whole 5 DVDs recovery.
Same thing:
BCD error.
I downloaded the program EASY BCD.
Inside there was a small BCDboot.exe that could run under dos.
(it was in EasyBcd\bin\BCDboot)
I executed the following line:
BCDboot c:\windows

BCD errror again converted to the other error with constant rebooting and "windows starting" screen.

I could press F8 and I tried several options
"Safe mode", "Last known configuration" ... Read more

Try booting of your windows 7 installation disk and following the installation procedure. When you get to the screen that says asks if you want to do a clean install or upgrade, select upgrade. This will do a repair installation of windows and should keep all your files. I do however recommend backing up anything you can first just in case.

Hello All,
Would someone know how or if it is possible to merge 2 Norton Ghost 2003 GHS files into 1 file? I have put 2 files on a DVd but it cannoot locate the second(span) file. The first is ok. so I think putting the 2 files together as one might work. I have had no success with making a file bigger than 2048 with ghost 2003 and NTFS drives. Thank you Mike
