AdwCleaner freezes during delete process

Q: AdwCleaner freezes during delete process

I i'm trying AdwCleaner but unfortunately it doesn't work. In the second process where you delete the files the program has found, it suddenly just freeze and give no response.
I have tried it once where it actually worked, but that was the last time.. So how can I use the program? I don't have any open programs while it scans so I don't understand why it wont work. Can someone help me, please?
(and sorry for my bad english)

Preferred Solution: AdwCleaner freezes during delete process

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I don't know what the problem is with Google Chrome, but it just loves to download adware every chance it gets. I have PCMatic on my laptop, but it seems to be useless in stopping adware. And Malwarebytes can't even find the adware. I have tried running Adwcleaner as administrator several times. But after disabling PCMatic, removing Google Chrome, and even deleting an identified folder myself (which was empty) Adwcleaner still freezes the entire system. I can't even bring up the task manager to force quit and I end up having to hard boot the whole damn thing each time. I'm doing everything that is suggested on all the popular forums and still, nothing works. Now what?

Hey, I've never actually asked my own question on one of these forums before, but this is becoming a problem that really needs fixing.
I've been able to fix adware problems on my friends', family's and my own computers before with Adwcleaner and it has always worked quite successfully, until I got a Windows 10 computer. Now when I try and run the 'Clean' function, I get the blue screen of death with the words 'Critical Process Died Error', and I haven't found a way to get around it.
Could anyone please help me - is it just an incompatibility with Adwcleaner and Windows 10 or is there a way to fix this?

A:Adwcleaner not working on Windows 10 - Critical Process Died Error

The Adwcleaner works with my Windows 10 you need to install latest version of device drivers.Install all important Windows updates.Update your programs.Open Command Prompt as a administrator and type Sfc /Scannow to repair any damage Windows system files. You can ask help at Windows Crashes, BSOD, and Hangs Help and Support forum.

My first post here.  I am pretty green for computer knowledge
I have surveyed this web site its SEARCH window in order to prevent from posting for an assist.  One search came up with a thousand posts that matched my search words.  Perhaps I should have used less words ?   I am thinking I got matches for the word "the."  In any case, what I found initially did not match my very general question (below). Perhaps a tip on doing an effective search would be in order ?
AdwCleaner is easy to use, but I am not going to willy nilly "clean" all of its findings in my registry or files (relatively few files compared to a multitude in registry. Other than the scan, I did nothing else....no celaning.
QUESTION 1 of 2:  May I upload the AdwCleaner log of its scan result of my computer to this site to the appropriate forum as I have seen advised in order for a review by a knowledgeable person to advise me what NOT to "clean" off my computer ?
Question 2 of 2:   Is it advisable to set a restore point prior to the "cleaning ?"
The above is general questioning, so the below may not be relevant at the moment, but here it is:
I completed the profile on this laptop at this site, but many questions were left unanswered as to specific hardware on my computer.  I did not how to find the answers.
I have a very new Lenovo Flex laptop using Windows 8.1

A:AdwCleaner... What NOT to Delete ???

Creating a restore point is a reasonable thing to do.
Post the results of the scans using the programs below for one computer. We'll clean the second after the first...better that way as it will be less chance of confusing us.
Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.
After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.

There is an AdwCleaner folder (with numerous sub-folders) in my directory, it is over 180MB in total (almost 5,000 files). I want to delete it to free up space on my laptop but with it being so large I want to know if it is safe for me to remove this folder. The log within is huge and I can't feasibly read through it, I just want some reassurance that it's not going to remove any files not specifically in this folder when it goes (I'm very new to this type of software, I'm aware there's a quarantine folder and I'm fine with anything stored in that directory being removed, so long as it doesn't also pull anything from other folders, such as Documents).

A:Safe to delete AdwCleaner folder?

Hi Zethian It's totally safe to delete the AdwCleaner folder. AdwCleaner uses this folder to store the files and folders it deletes and also it store it's logs. Deleting it will remove the malicious entries it detected and removed and also the logs it produced. It's suggested to use the Uninstall option in AdwCleaner to properly remove that folder. Download and execute AdwCleaner and instead of clicking on Scan, click on Uninstall. This will delete the AdwCleaner folder and the application

I'm new here after screwing up my computer a few days ago using an anti-malware cleaner called RogueKiller.  While deleting the files in RogueKiller didn't initially cause problems, my computer eventually became disconnected from the internet after a "blue Screen event" and I had to restore my windows 10 to an earlier date.  I just ran AdwCleaner and here's the log file - I hesitate to delete ANYTHING after I had done so before and lost internet connection.  Please advise me the safest way to deal with these "threats" because I am not computer savvy when it comes to registry files - obviously after I screwed up settings that were needed to get online. I don't want to screw up again.

Hi everyone,

I ran ADW about a week ago, and it was not-responding and froze my computer. I ran 2 different times today, and it was also not-responding and again completely froze my computer when cleaning. I had to hard boot, because I had no choice.
1.Does anybody else experience this trouble with ADW, or just me??

2. Is there other source, not bleeping computer, to download it from, or it would not make any difference???

My Norton says ADW is safe for downloading. But it's unusable at this point.

Thanks for your help in advance, guys.

When i try to end the process a message comes up saying 'task manager has stopped working' and my only option is to close the task manager.
Is this a virus? and does anyone know how to get rid of it?
P.s I have windows 7.

Also, their is a autorun.inf virus on my usb and when i try to delete it, it says something like 'cannot delete as zeioki.exe is using it'.

Also, before all this, my virus protection (trend micro) asked me if I wanted to allow or block zeioki.exe from making changes to my computer, it said its publisher was microsoft so i allowed it and the security risk was stated as low. My virus protection said that the risk was that it could change my dll or dl or something like that i cant really remember. And now sometimes it says unknown publisher and other times microsoft is stated as the publisher.

The thing is I have only just noticed it.These two notepad files in my task manager so I got curious as to why I could not remove them from the process list. So I downloaded Process Explorer to see whether it could delete it either.Weird thing I saw immedialty, was that the 2 Notepad.exe's had no parent, they were just running... and the colour of the process was grey, which isn't on the "Change highlighted colour" thing.I'll attach an image so you can see for yourself.I would like to know a way to remove them, as I like to keep my process list clean, and this has confused me greatly.

A:Strange process,2 notepad.exe's cant delete

I've noticed that they're are infact "Suspended" Only problem is, I cannot Un-suspend them. I do not think this to be the works of a virus, due to the fact I run weekly scans, and did a combofix only 9 days ago due to my PC getting destroyed by one peice of malware. Which has been sorted now. And I'm fairly good with computers, as I now work at a computer repair shop [Not PC World ]

Good morning all. After fixing many ads and trojans here, I tried uninstalling windows media player (it came with viewpoint and gave me many ads, etc.) but it won't let me uninstall it. I tried deleting the files within the folder and the folder itself but everytime I do and open it back up, there they are again. Also, I get a message saying that "cannot delete, used by another program" or something about processing.

I wanted to uninstall then go to microsoft.com to reinstall media player 10 but it won't install it. When I click on the exe file to install, it tells me that it's already installed or something. I'm frustrated at this point.

I also have no windows search (just an empty pane) and can't access windows update from any medium no matter how I try. I currently use Firefox as a browser. Can't run win update from search button, IE web toolbar or through my control panel. It does give me updates everyday automatically. I just can't do it manually for some reason. A:Delete After Canceling a Copy Process?

i dont know why you would want it to delete everything.. it's probably a fail-safe in-case somebody were to accidently "cancel" the file transfer

imagine if you were copying a 20 gigabytes of files and your computer accidentally restart/shutdown.. or you accidentally cancelled it.. wouldn't you want those files to still be there?

anyway, i think your solution though is using a program called Teracopy

but copy some random file first and do an experiment with files that you don't need first.. remember to test it out

I understand Bitlocker creates a large placeholder file during the initial encryption process, leaving around 6 GB free. I was wondering, what happens if during this process you delete one or more of your large files and empty recycle bin, in turn leaving
e.g. tens of gigabytes of "new" free space? The Bitlocker's placeholder file won't increase automatically after this. Won't this somewhat "defeat" what Bitlocker is trying to accomplish?

I know if you pause the process and continue some other day, a larger placeholder file will be recreated then, filling up also the space you freed the day before (which isn't the case within the same session when you delete some of your files).

Combofix freezes at the screen just after it says scanning for infected files but before Completed Stage 1 should appear. If I look at the running processes, the combofix process (in this case rmbr.cfxxe) is using about 50% of the CPU and System Idle the other 50%. I cannot end the process and only a hard shutdown will stop it. Running it from safemode has the same result. I tried stopping every other process before running combofix and also after combofix was already frozen (or busy a better word?). I have disabled the antivirus beforehand.I ran gmer while in safe mode and here are those results (below). Running the most recent version of GMER froze just like combofix. Problem that was intermittent has now become permanent. During boot sequence Windows start screen is very faint and boot process hangs. Only way I have found around it is to kill the mains then start again going into safe mode. Following a restart from safe mode all works fine. I have been on SP2 for a while problem was not there initially. Any thoughts.

Built my first computer (256 bytes of blistering memory with a calculator style screen) aged 16, built loads since then but only Windows makes me scream in frustration.

Whenever I try to run any virus/malware/spyware scanne my computer freezes after a few (variable) minutes.
It does this on: Windows Defender, AVG, Avast, SuperAntiSpyware.

Each program freezes consistently at the same place but it is a different place for each program. There are no errors and it does not impact anything outside the software.

I have:-

1 booted into Safe Mode and run the programs that can run in safe mode and nothing was found.

2 run ComboFix and found nothing

3 Run a scan overnight in the hope that it was just running slow but it was still frozen.

4 Ploughed through the web and found a lot of posts about scanners freezing and tried various workarounds but these appeared to the software specific - none worked; I am assuming that I have a common problem.

5 Uninstalled and reinstalled the software but it still freezes during the scan.

Is there a common 'scanning' service in XP that could be the source?

I have now reached the 'kick the PC reapeatedly while using my entire stock of swear words" stage.

Well...here is the thread documenting my original issue:

After trying the things mentioned in that post...and not having anything I cared about losing...I did a full recovery. It took a couple of tries but it did complete the recovery process.

The computer still freezes and only a hard restart will unfreeze it. The hard drive isn't spinning, so I don't think that's the issue. I have no idea what to do with this thing. Bad memory? The Windows memory check was negative for errors. Something else? At this point with a five year old computer, I'm not inclined to spend a lot to fix this. It has such light usage though...I hate to throw it away.
Care to share your thoughts? I'd be grateful.

Hey. I've some trouble with my notebook, here are details:

Notebook: ASUS Eee PC 1001PX.
I used to think that the problem was with its hdd, but it's not. I've reinstalled OS through PC and it still doesn't work. On PC hdd works btw.
Then I realized that the problem can be related with bios and I can download new BIOS and reset it, but that option was wrong. He simply stood at this stage.
And the last one, what do I want to do is just use 2 items (which I don't have) mean hot air gun for dismantling its bios, then insert it into programmer and firmware it through PC. What do you think, the game worth the candle?

Hey guys. First of all, I want to let you know that I do NOT have this computer with me. It is one of my relatives, but I have worked on it before.

Ok. The computer is a Dell Inspiron Laptop that is under 3 or 4 months old. The issue is this: When the lid is closed, the computer goes into sleep mode. Thats great, but when the lid is opened again the computer hangs. When you pull up the task manager the process System is at 97% - 99%.

Any idea what can cause this? I have racked my brain and can't figure it out. I have run spyware scans along with anti virus and nothing has turned up. The owner doesn't ever download anything, so I don't think it can be an infection.

What do you all think? A speedy reply would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

I would go to Dell's website and download the latest system software. It may be that the power management software has become corrupt.

Hi guys, I keep getting this high amount of ram usage, so I open up task manager and I see the C# command line compiler running which is odd because I'm not compiling anything at this moment. What's even more odd is that the process of the compiler (csc.exe) last about a sec and it closes automatically when opening task manager, but opens up again once I close task manager. I believe that this executable has a function that once task manager open terminate the process. I also see this other process I'm not familiar with called fin.exe (32 bit) with the description of "ComboFix NSIS Installer" and it's file location is at the temp folder (C:\Users\root\AppData\Local\Temp). I can't end the process, as it gives me this error http://i.imgur.com/AFiJCbK.jpg, or will blue screen my computer if I do. When I open up the temp folder I don't see it there, and there's also some files moving around and it seems that I'm not able to select the files inside the folder in order to delete them, so I tried temp file cleaner but no success it blue screened. So I have malwarebytes, and tried to open the file shortcut to it but windows gave me an error http://i.imgur.com/WPuf29X.jpg which is weird because I can still click on the open file location option and go there. So clearly malwarebytes wasn't going open to the virus preventing that. So I tried chameleon, a work around to open malwarbytes, and it did open and scanned as well. At the end I got 130+ items found, most of them hijack. Although... Read more

Win7 freezes before completing the boot process. There is a little box saying the disk is full, click here to delete files. But of course I can’t click there when the system is frozen.

I boot to safe mode, go to control panel, programs and uninstall several large programs. I click on restart but the system won’t shut down. I let it set for an hour or more and it still says Logging Off. Of course when I have to power down the system doesn’t save the changes.

I repeat and this time click shut down. Again it won’t shut down, after an hour or so it still says “Windows is shutting down”./
I log on to a Dos prompt. I go to d:/download and type del software. It asks if I really want to do that y/n. I type y but nothing happens.

I change directories to d:/download/software and type del *.*. It asks y/n. I type y and nothing happens.

Any ideas how I might delete some files and maybe get this thing working again?

From time to time I experience, that windows freezes and "Windows Problem Reporting": WerFault.exe goes nuts in its connection establishments to the Internet

I have tried to monitor the processes using ?Job List? and ?resource monitoring? etc. and there I can see that CPU from time to time peaks at 100% - but when it happens - I can not get access to see which process is causing this high CPU usage, which I assume is to blame that the machine is freezing from time to time. You know - Windows freezes precisely at that times :-(
I also found out where I can find windows logbook, but I can not understand how to use it

Some tips and hints for troubleshooting and monitoring for errors?

NB I made recovery ( I am currently not interested in resetting for now) and I have used windows various problem solver programs - witn no good results

I can "provoke" the windows to go in Temporary freeze mode - by switching to my other monitor

I have a Western Digital drive and it keeps freezing the transfer process around 15 seconds remaining. I am trying to transfer my movie files to it. The files are around 750 megs to 2.5 gigs each. I am trying to do them one at a time. I have got it to transfer about 3 movies to the device. When the transfer locks I have to turn off the computer and turn it back on to get it to stop. Its I think a 110 gig external.

A:Western Digital Drive Freezes Transfer Process

Some details you have left out.
Age of PC
Desktop or Laptop
How much RAM?
Single, Dual or Quad or high CPU.
Size of HDD
What source are you using to transfer file to the HDD?
Are you using a network LAN?
Speed of the LAN 10, 100, 10000?

When you do this type of work make sure the PC doesn't go to sleep and keep an eye on it.
Make sure the HDD doesn't have any bad blocks do a check disk (CHKDSK C: /F
Make sure the HDD is de-fragmented
Make sure the HDD has done quick or full optimized (use ULTRA DEFRAG FREE)
Make sure the system is cleaned using JetClean Free

The condition of the HDD is very important also the source your transferring from too it.

My motherboard has a built in wifi card, but ofcourse I use wired.

I use wifi for troubleshooting connections sometimes.

When I am done with wifi, I disable wifi - about to enable ethernet. But the wifi does not disable I click disable a few more times but nothing. And I can not enable ethernet.

- Sometimes it can stop on enabling ethernet with that small loading rectangle screen, that will appear for ever...

The only fix when the network process hangs is to hard restart.

I restart the pc from start menu but it stops on the screen "restarting (spinning thing)" - it still spins but spins for ever, so I have to press my PC reset button.

On bootup (i have a 3 places to click in a picture for the password) when I click the 3 places, it is still waiting for more clicks or "start over", if i wait long enough it finally realises I have already done the 3 clicks correctly and lets me in.

Re: Windows vista 64 bit freezes at desktop Hi All,

I have a serious problem - I have a certain software product (let's call it X) which works fine on all 32bit versions, but freezes up Multi-core 8 GB Vista Ultimate machine, when performing a certain actions (let's say, filling the spread sheet with data). After this program is done, Vista unfreezes and everything back to normal, but during the run, I cannot bring up any other window - not even a Task Manager (I can move the mouse, though) - clicking on the windows tabs does not do anything. I have 2 monitors and I can see Task Manager on a second one, if I bring it up before X starts to work and I see that CPU load never reaches 100%. But I cannot do anything with the PC until X is done working.

Would appreciate any help or assistance.

A:Running process temporarily freezes Windows Vista 64 bit

It may not reach 100%, but if there's a clear and sustained plateau in the Task Manager graph then it's likely that processor utilisation is at least part of the problem.

If you include more detail about the architecture or name of this app (so others can research its architecture), it may be possible to tell you whether it's got what it takes to directly cause freezes (a buggy driver), or whether the freezes are more likely to be caused by something like interference during disk data committment by your anti-virus drivers, just as an example.

At the end of combofix, it tries to reboot itself but freezes there unable to finish the shutdown process. I can manually pop up task manager with ctrl+alt+del and restart the computer, but disrupt combofix process(As a result, combofix will repeatedly find the same issues again and again). Except for the freeze, everything else seems normal. I am using win xp professional with sp2/3 and most windows updates installed. I did google a bit on line, somebody else also complained same thing, but obviously the moderators there didn't realize existence of this issue (most of them thought this to be very serious and directed questioner to make a bootcd). I would really hope the developers will take a look into this issue. Combofix is the last means I rely on when something really mysterious happens in my computer. Now it cannot finish its work, I feel very frustrated. Meanwhile, I really appreciate/admire your work by developing such a nice, quick little powerful thing.Edit: Moved topic from Windows XP to the more appropriate forum.~ Animal

A:combofix is able to find errors, but freezes at the reboot process

As a general policy, Bleeping Computer does not offer advice on how to run ComboFix unless we asked someone to run it or if there is a problem with the computer caused by running the tool. Per the developer, people should not be using ComboFix without being advised to do so by a trained expert (see here) who is assisting them deal with a malware problem. When issues arise due to complex malware infections, possible false detections, problems running ComboFix (i.e. stalling, hanging, crashing) or with other security tools causing conflicts, experts are usually aware of them and can advise what should or should not be done while providing individual assistance. When false detections are identified, experts have access to the developer and can report them so he can investigate, confirm and make corrections. Those attempting to use ComboFix on their own do not have such information and are at risk when running the tool in an unsupervised environment. Also be aware that using ComboFix is only one part of the disinfection process. Preliminary scans from other tools like DDS, OTL, RSIT and GMER should be used first because they provide comprehensive logs with specific details about files, folders and registry keys which may have been modified by malware infection. Analysis of those logs allows planning a strategy for effective disinfection and a determination if using ComboFix is necessary. With that said, there are circumstances ComboFix will hang, crash or stall at various stages du... Hi there,

I'm a bit desperate here, since I can't seem to find a way to debug, analyze and fix this issue.

My systems sometimes freezes during the boot process and all I get is black screen.

This happens when the error occurs:
BIOS shows up normally
Window 7 logo is shown for a brief second
black screen

With boot details enabled, I see that drivers are getting loaded until classpnp.sys. After that the screen goes black as well and the system hangs.

Now when I turn on the machine, I get a text screen asking me whether to start normally or run a recovery attempt. Usually starting normally is all it takes and Windows boots up fine.
Once Windows is up and running, it's rock solid. No lockups, no BSODs or whatsoever.

Unfortunately I have no idea how to get debug details of this part of the boot process (os loader phase?).

I already switched the SATA Ports, switched to a different brand and even switched to mSATA. So I'm pretty sure it's not the SSD. Using Windows SATA drivers or Intel RST doesn't make a difference either btw.
Any help is very very appreciated!

SSD Troubleshooting:Despite your statement that it is probably not an SSD issue, it does sound like the SSD may be disappearing from the system. Make sure the following are up to date:SSD firmware
BIOS Version
Chipset Drivers
Hard disk controller drivers/SATA drivers
If you have a Marvell IDE ATA/ATAPI device, make sure the drivers are up to date from the Intel site or Marvell site and not from your motherboard/vendor support site.

Try doing a power cycle of the SSD. The following steps should be carried out and take ~1 hour to complete.Power off the system.
Remove all power supplies (ac adapter then battery for laptop, ac adapter for desktop)
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to close the circuit and drain all components of power.
Reconnect all power supplies (battery then ac adapter for laptop, ac adapter for desktop)
Turn on the system and enter the BIOS (see your manual for the steps to enter the BIOS)
Let the computer remain in the BIOS for 20 minutes.
Follow steps 1-3 and physically remove the SSD from the system by disconnecting the cables for a desktop or disconnecting the drive from the junction for a laptop.
Leave the drive disconnected for 30 seconds to let all power drain from it.
Replace the drive connection(s) and then do steps 4-8 again.
Repeat steps 1-4.
Start your computer normally and run Windows.
