Solved: Installation of Older Printer to Off-line HP Computer

Q: Solved: Installation of Older Printer to Off-line HP Computer

I am trying to install an HP 693C Deskjet printer to an off-line (no internet) HP Vectra computer with 32 RAM and 199 MHz. The computer will not read the CD with the printer driver information on it. Both the computer's "floppy" and CD drives seem to work okay for other applications. The installation disc contains driver information downloaded from the internet using another computer.

I have talked to HP who no longer supports this computer/printer and would charge more than the value of the unit to provide a "burned" CD.

How can I install this printer to this computer?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Is it possible to install printers using printui.dll command line using the bundled windows 7 printer drivers that come with the OS or from the update drivers that can be obtained from Windows Update? I have done this before using the printer drivers
and inf file that I've downloaded from a vendor site. But I need to install several printers that come bundled with the Windows 7, that don't have a corresponding download anymore on the vendor site. A couple examples would be the
Lexmark Optra M410 or Xerox 3250. I need to find out how to install a new printer object and then simply install additional drivers of various models without creating a new printer object.

This past week my system decided that I no longer have a driver for the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus printer that I have been using for the past couple of years. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and still no driver. I finally did get a message that windows could not open the file it needed and I needed to go to the manufacturer page and download it again. Which I have done may times. I am also unable to do updates any longer without crashing my computer. Is it just too old? Thank!!

i acquired a computer that my girlfriends brother built about 5 years ago, i use it for my work computer that doubles as a cash register. i popped it open to check things out (crazy dusty!!) and noticed that the Ram slot (i think they are the Ram slots) weren't all filled. now i use this computer for the internet and my accounting program and it isn't actually terrible as far as speed goes, but it isn't good either. so i am guessing it would take an older type of Ram (i don't know it you could even still buy it).

i am just wondering where i look to find out what type of Ram and what type of motherboard i have and all the info i would need to look into this further.

i apologize for the newb question (really i do), but i have to start somewhere i guess, right.

I have a Dell 8400 that I purchased Aug. '04 running WinXP. The monitor on it just died, and since I just got a new laptop a few months ago, I don't really want to spring for a new PC also right now. I know it's old, but it works just fine for us. I just need to get a new monitor, but I have no idea how "backwards compatible" the new flat screen monitors are. We use the computer for email and simple home office duties mostly, with some photo storage, so no need for anything super high-intensity as far as video quality goes. Will there be only certain types of monitors that will work with my system? I need a little help figuring out what I need. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

A:Solved: need new monitor for older computer

They are very well backwards compatible. As long as they have a VGA connector, or you have a DVI to VGA adapter, just about any monitor you can grab from anywhere will work.

Hello Everybody-

I was wondering how best to hook up an older computer to the internet. The computer in question is an old Compaq laptop (Pentium II) running Windows 2000. I am currently using a Motorola SBV5120 cable modem. The computer can access the internet if I connect it to the cable modem via USB cable. However, connecting an ethernet cable from the cable modem to the ethernet port on the Xircom internal modem does not work. The Xircom modem does work if you connect to a dial-up line. My main reason for wanting to figure this out is because I am going to be hooking up a router to the cable modem soon. Since I plan on using a wired router (ethernet cables) to hook up my computers, how would I best hook up the Compaq? Can I use an ethernet/USB adaptor on the USB port of the computer? The computer will be approximately twenty feet away from where the cable modem currently is. I was figuring on using a wired router to connect everything to keep costs and simplicity of the system down. If these are stupid question, forgive me. I've been a computer user for years, but don't have much knowledge on the technical side of things. Thanks.

A:Solved: Help Connecting Older Computer to Internet

Well, I'm having a bit of a problem with an internal modem that has both a dial-up port and an Ethernet port, I've never seen or heard of such a beast!

How about telling us exactly what configuration you have.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

Let's see this as well.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Can a pentium II be installed into an older machine that has a pentium 133? Is there some kind of adapter or is the bus just too small?

A:{SOLVED} Can Pentium II be installed in older computer?

I seriously doubt that there is such an adapter. The external buses are the same size, but the internal bus architecture is much different. The Pentium II includes a level 2 cache bus which does not exist on the earlier Pentium. I would think that a whole new motherboard design would be required to handle the differences so such an adapter would be pointless.

Two different Win 7 computers on my network can't find the HP1160 USB connected printer on the Win 8 installation of my dual boot configuration. The Win 7 computer has no problem finding and installing the same printer when accessing the Win 7 installation of my dual boot configuration. Its interesting to note that it finds my networked Dell 1320c printer both at its network IP address and as a printer available "through" the Win 8 installation.

I have tried all the available installation methods: search (of course), browse and selecting the Win 8 computer, providing the computer/printername and finally supplying the Win 8 IP address. The Win 7 computer simply will not recognize the printer attached to the Win 8 installation. All the permissions are turned on for printer sharing as well as file sharing. Turning off the Norton and Windows firewalls doesn't help either.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A:Win 7 Computer can't find USB Printer on Win 8 Dual Boot Installation

Here we are in "Hardware and Drivers". The drivers for the printer are no problem as it works well in both Win 8 and Win 7 from the host computer and fine in Win 7 from the network computer. In the same way the hardware communications between the computers works fine Win 7 to Win 7 and with file access to and from Win 8. Could it be a Win 8 bug... ??

I have a new Windows 7 Professional 64-bit computer. I also have a Samsung SCX-4100 printer, which worked fine on two different previous computers, one running Vista and the other running Windows 7 (x32). When I updated to the 64-bit computer, and loaded the Samsung x64 driver, the printer appears installed, but will not print at all. It is listed on all my programs and, when told to print, the printer icon appears in the lower task bar, but no documents show up in the queue, and the printer does not print anything.

The only printing it did was, upon installation, it printed out the test page correctly. I have used various Windows troubleshooters, I have removed and reinstalled the printer several times, and nothing has changed. I tried to re-configure the USB port to which the printer is connected, but I received this statement each time: "an error occurred during port configuration" and thus I cannot attempt to re-configure the port.

Kindly anybody please help in this regard

Please kindly help to get the printer installed in that pc since it will be a great pain for me to backup ,format and reload the pc

N.B: Past two days I googled and applied the registry tweaks but there is no effect

Thanks in advance

A:Solved: installation of printer fails!

Are the other printers in the domain running Windows XP SP3 as well??

What "registry tweaks did you apply"?

Are you familiar with running chkdsk to verify there is not a problem with bad sectors, lost clusters, cross-linked files, and directory errors? Its possible that, one or more of those could be the culprit.

If the problem still exists, it's possible that an XP "repair install" could fix the problem without you losing any files, profiles, preferences etc. That may be your best option as far as saving time is concerned if all else fails.

I have a wireless network connection to my laptop which is connected to my printer. I previously installed the printer and it was working with no problems.

I recently went to print and realised that the network printer wasn't installed any more. My computer recognises the network laptop and printer but when I go to install the printer the dialog box just hangs and the 'not responding' message comes up.

I suspect this maybe because I disabled a number of services (from services.msc) that were recommended on a Vista tweaking site. Maybe I disabled one that allows drivers to be installed. Not sure which one if this is the case.

Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

My mother in law just got a new computer with Vista, her old printer has a parallel cable, not a USB. The new computer only takes the USB, is there an adapter that will allow me to hook her parallel into something that goes to a USB or does she have to buy a new printer?

A:Using an older printer

There are parallel-to-USB adapters, and I've used them, but results have been inconsistent. I've never used one with Vista, and I suspect there would be more problems with such a device than with XP. Aside from the adapter, you still need Windows Vista drivers for the printer. If it's so old as to not use USB, it's doubtful drivers exist.

A new printer would be a better, more reliable solution. There are very good, cheap printers available now.

I formerly used the Brother AIO MFC 3240C printer on a Windows XP Pro machine and now with this new Compaq with preinstalled Windows 7, I can't install and use it--even with my Brother CD for the software. I was using a Brother HL 2040 but decided I wanted to resume using the Brother AIO printer so that I could scan and use the copy features. Anyone using this same setup on a Windows 7 OS machine?
And as luck would have it, one color ink cartridge is empty and since I don't print in color would that have a bearing on anything? Would this cause the printer to not print anything? I only print in B&W. As usual, TIA and I hope you can follow what I tried to convey.

Hello People,

I have two PCs with XP-Home on one and and W2K-SP4 on the other.

I have acquired an old large-scale flat bed plotter that is driven by a specifically written Printer driver for Windows 3.1.

Currently I am running this from an old 486-laptop running win3.1 but it is so slow (computer, not the plotter) and no network for file transfer. I tried win3.11 but the printer driver will not run correctly with win3.11 so it is back to win3.1.

Is there anyway I can make XP or W2K use the w3.1 printer driver?

I tried to install the driver in XP and W2K from the plotter disk but I get "there is no printer information in that location."

I don't care which system I use XP or W2K.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Depending on with whom I speak at Dell support, one moment the answer's yes; another moment, no; and yet another moment, maybe, but there might be problems! When I asked for further elaboration re "problems," I was told with the drivers on an older XP machine. I had envisioned backing up his current data to an external HD, then installing Win 7, followed by restoring his backed up data.

I'm not here to bash Dell in any way, but I still don't know if I can or should do what my friend prefers, and that's to move away from the XP Pro sp3 O/S no long supported and get more current with Win 7 installed on his 530...he really wants to keep his 530.

I'd really appreciate some help here.

Thank you!

A:Windows 7 installation on an older desktop with xp pro s/p 3

Buy a 6 Gbps sata drive, hook it up and install W7 on that, completely un hook his XP drive. If the machine was ever sold with Vista then those drivers will work with 7. Get the network driver and put it on a flash drive using the XP install before you start anything, that way you can install it and get online with the W7 install. You will need to get that driver from the Dell website.

It will run 7 no problem, just max out the memory and add a good video card. Later on upgrade the cpu to the fastest it can handle.

My friend replaced my harddrive with a bigger one the other day.
Everything is fine except that I get [Error number: 0x8007043B] when trying to install windows updates. Setting the value data to BITS and WUAUSERV in regedit did not work for me.
Another problem I am having is that my HP psc 2410 photosmart all-in-one printer will not install properly. It installs upto like 30% and then I get a message like "The system cannot read from the specified device." or "ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE" with "D:\setup\hpzgat01.exe -gate cue -runhpzmsi01.exe -m doc proc" or "D:\setup\hpzgat01.exe gate cue -runhpzmsi01.exe -m photogallery"
Now, I don't think it is the harddrive cuz everything else is working very smoothly. I dunno if maybe I am missing windows files or what...PLZ help me...When I have a problem I usually find a fix on your forum but this one is a little bit more complex and I can't find a fix anywhere. If u need more details about something plz ask me.

Not sure this is the right place to post this but here's the problem. Our older printers HPLJ4's etc. had a font called CG Times. Several of our people did documents in this font and really like it. We have placed new printers over time and the CG Times font is no longer available. We found that if you connect to a LJ4 and make it your default you'll have the font available. But if you go back to a default printer that doesn't have it, you lose it.

Making your default the LJ4 but remembering to change to your own printer before you print is WAY too complicated for many of our users...I'm sure you understand. I'd like to have the CG Times font for them, but when I go to download sites you have to pay for it. Doesn't seem right when I have it for free on the HP4.

Any ideas how I can get this font?

A:Older Printer Fonts No Longer Available

CG Times is available as both a 'True Type' font, which you can install on any workstation (available from some sites for free) and also as a 'Printer Font' which I believe is intrinsic to your HPLJ4 driver.

That said, I tried installing the 'True Type' version on a W2K but documents previously created with the 'Printer Font' version didn't like it. So I ended up trashing this version. My problem is that even with an LJ4 connected as my default printer, I'm not able to use CGTimes on this W2K machine. So, can anyone advise on how to install this font as a Print Font?

Do I need to update the latest driver from HP?

I have an older (but definitely dependable) HP LaserJet 4 Plus printer. It's worked beautifully through various generations of Windows...until my new computer with Vista. I bought a serial-to-USB cord to connect the two. When I plug the printer cable into a USB port, the computer immediately recognizes the printer's model and says it's installed. I set the printer as "default," but when I try to print something, it won't go through. It shows in the PRINT CONTROL queue panel, but nothing comes through to the printer.

Does anyone have any suggestions? HP no longer offers drivers for that printer on their website and subsequently won't offer help on their call-in tech line either.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

I bought a discontinued, 'Zebra Z4M Plus' Thermal Printer for a specific application.

On the back of the printer, there is a parallel, and db9 port. I have tried using both a db9 and parallel to USB adapter cable to connect to a newer laptop...neither of which works, and the laptop does not detect the printer.

I'm running Windows Vista, which is compatible with the printer.

What kind of cable is going to work? Do I need a cable that connects to the standard, 15pin serial port on the laptop, as opposed to the USB adapter?

These trips to BestBuy are not fun anymore - any advise is appreciated!
