I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,I'm sitting here absolutely confounded. I just reinstalled Windows on my x240 and decided that, while I was at it, I might as well remove my BIOS password, as I am no longer in school. I primarily use my laptop at home, so a password isn't really necessary.I go into the BIOS and straight to the security tab. I start disabling everything that is enabled and related to Supervisor password, Boot-up password, Start-up password and so forth. At one point, I am prompted to type in my current password and next to fill in my new password and to type it in once more. Being somewhat familiar with how unintuitive a BIOS can be, I leave the fields where I have to type in my new password blank, thinking that the BIOS will then assume that I want to have no password. I leave the fields empty and hit ENTER. It accepts this for some reason. I get a system halt for some reason and my laptop reboots. I am then prompted to type in my BIOS password as per usual, but it won't accept the password I usually use, which means there's an active password, but no longer the one that I've set prior to this. I try different passwords, I try just hitting ENTER, but no luck.I am locked out of my laptop and every Google result even remotely related to my issue suggests that I have to purchase a new motherboard for my x240. Really?I did not set a new password, I left the fields BLANK and hit ENTER. I have no idea what the password could be.I figured perhaps the BIOS password reverts to a prior password,... Read more

A:Lenovo x240 LOCKED OUT

Ok, this is embarassing but it might be something to learn from.I just remembered the very first BIOS password I set. I tried it, and it worked. Leaving the fields blank caused my BIOS to revert to the earliest password, which is the password I set prior to the one I am using now.Either that, or my supervisor password and my start-up password were different.Anyway, feel free to mark my thread as resolved or just delete it.

After BIOS upgrade to v2.30 (from v2.24) on my x240 it's fan started to run non-stop on ~3k rpm while the machine is idle. Downgrading to v2.29 BIOS version solved the problem. Just FYI.

I could also confirm that FAN rpms regulation is different than before. I performed also downgrade to bios v 2.29 and everything is as before. I hope lenovo will fix this in next bios release. David

Because I want to buy non Lenovo battery. I tried searching online but I was able to find info only about X230 and T430. Have anyone tried non Lenovo battery in ThinkPad X240 yet? Did Lenovo allowed non genuine batteries after some BIOS update?

ThinkPad and ThinkCenter are completely different when it comes to Asset ID.  ThinkCenter uses the BIOS flash tool (with certain parameters) while ThinkPad uses a separate tool.

Hi everyone,It's has been few months that I have bought a Lenovo X240 (i5-4300U).It came with Windows 7 Pro, I used it till Windows 10 came out and then I upgraded it.The problem is that there is an option in the BIOS which allow to choose Graphics Memory for Internal Adapter (256MB and 512MB).But the changes do not apply. I mean it doesn't matter which value I choose (256MB or 512MB), the VRAM is still the same. In Windows 7, it would be 64MB but now in Windows 10; it became 128MB.Can someone tell me what is the problem ?And yes, I know that increasing the memory will hardly have effect on graphics performance. I am more concerned about why it does not work.Specs:- i5-4300U- 4Gb ram- 500GB HDD- Windows 10 Pro (14393 Build)Thanks!

Hello everyone, the following happend:I wanted to re-install my windows 10 on the x240, as it was giving some problems (very slow at shutting down, sometimes blue screen).I updated the bios first, but it gave me an error message.I nevertheless went to re-install Windows 10 ( via Windows 10 Click 'Start > Settings > Update & security > Recovery'), but about half way through the process, it gave an error message. After that when I started the laptop, I could only get into the bios, but not into windows. F10 shows that there is no hardware problem, and pressing F11 (the original pre-installed installation) does not lead to any reaction. The support from the place where I bought the x240 tried to update the bios from an external drive as well tried to re-install windows from an external drive. both failed, and they told me to seek solution with Lenovo.what can I do?Best,Barbara

I bought an used x240 8 months ago, a few months back it started not waking up from sleep but since I had work to do on it for university I left it that way and waited. Now that I'm done I'm trying to resolve the issue and it seems quite common. I tried everything I found online without success. Then I read that there were some bios updates and in the changelog the of the last one it says they fixed issues with sleep mode. Now I tried to install it from windows 10 and from usb since I usually only work with linux. The result is always the same:I boot inside the update utility, follow the instructions and when it reboots the lenovo splashscreen appears but it does not say anything about updating the bios (I saw it should on youtube). Needless to say, when I go inside the bios setup it indicates the version is still 2.37.I already tried changing bios settings in every possible way. If I can obtain a USB CD drive I'll try using that instead but in the meantime can anyone help me?

In cinebench my framerate went form 20 to 16.6 and cpu benchmark from 251 to 171. Lenovo!!? I knew Apple did this kind of thing, but it seems  to be spreading. How do i get this Lenovo "virus" from my laptop? ie where can i find the older version of the bios that was working perfectly? Thanks in advance.

Hey folks,I got my T61 last week and been very happy so far. I installed Windows yesterday and did all the updates and driver installation with the automated Matrix program (not sure what it's called). One of the updates was a BIOS update.I tried to access my BIOS afterwards and it asked me for a password (it has never done that before the update). I never set one, so I just tried to hit enter and to double check also my usual computer password (I set that for Windows but not for BIOS, I just wanted to double check). Now I can't access my computer nor my BIOS anymore.Any idea what I can do? I am sure I never entered a password and so I am pretty frustrated. Thank you. Robert

You need to provide more information before one could suggest anything concrete. However, here are some generic suggestions. Is the machine totally dead?Take it to service. It starts up and then acts up asking for password. If you have set up password recovery in ThinkVantage Security Solution, you could recover the password. You may have to use ThinkVantage Blue button at the start up.Have you made Windows Password Recovery disk? This would help you recover windows passwordAs last resort try to set to factory setting and re-install to original setup. But before that go to service, particularly if the machine is under warranty.

Acer Aspire 5630 Laptop

Hi guys, my acer laptop has vista 64 on it, but I am trying to put the 32 version on in order to put 2 programs on that need to run on vista 32.

The problem is there is a password on the bios(where this came out of i don't know) and I need to boot from CD but I cannot get in to change the order, also this means I cannot use bios clearing password tools as they are off a cd.

I think the laptop holds the bios password in the eeprom and not the bios battery.I have striped down the laptop a far bit but could not find the bios battery.
The problem is I am on holiday at the moment and I don't really want to strip it totally as I am in a hotel, but I really need to get this going.asap

I have tryed some default password for the bios manufacturer, but nothing.
I wiped my laptop before and put on vista 64, but when I redownloaded the acer empowering support wiget(that would let me change the order their) that does not work and I cannot find anything on google about the issue.

Is there any programs that can do this from windows?

A:Locked BIOS

Hi: If stringent security was set, your only option would be to either replace the motherboard or BIOS chip. There are no jumpers.  Only on HP business desktops are there jumpers. If stringent security is set on an HP business desktop, then removing the jumper can't clear the P/W anyway. You would have to replace the BIOS chip or motherboard in that case as well.

How can I bypass/disable the BIOS lock to turn this into a functioning PC again? Any suggestions are welcomed and helpful. Thanks

A:Locked out via BIOS

I believe you can reset it just by removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes till the circuit runs dry, then replacing it... It's a dime size round battery somewhere on the motherboard.

Make sure you unplug the machine before you do this.

I know you can do it with reset jumpers also, but try the power cycle first.

What I would like to know is perhaps what happened, what did I do wrong?

Have a Packard Bell laptop with Phoenix Bios.

I had a boot password setup and went into the BIOS to remove it.

On the security screen I could only access one cell, buttons wouldn't let me navigate further. Think this was change user password, certainly wasn't Super but there was a third which I don't recall.

I entered my usual password then on acceptance added CR twice for the new one. This then showed the User password as clear and the Super as set.

Hoped this had cleared my boot password so saved and booted and now asks me for a password. Is it asking for the Super password ? Or has the CR fooled it into looking for some other code? I suspect the latter as my usual passwords don't work for the Super

Hello @quarinteen Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting. Most business class notebooks (including yours Elitebook and Probook) have better security, they do not produce halt codes and are better protected against "attacks". You will have to contact HP Business Support for assistance on removing the password. Here is how >> http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-phone-assist.html>> http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/business-support.html HP Business support should be able to send you a customised SMC.bin file and instructions which you can use  to reset the password.
