Windows XP Will Not Start, Hangs On Loading Screen, Then restarts. Cannot enter S/M.

Q: Windows XP Will Not Start, Hangs On Loading Screen, Then restarts. Cannot enter S/M.

Hi, last night I was running a virusscan and adaware scans, disk cleanup (adaware, spybot, windows thing, etc) as I always do. Only difference was that i uninstalled my ATI drivers in preparation for installing the 5.11 drivers.

Well, I wake up this morning and my PC is on a blank screen saying "Hardware initiate failed, press G to continue"...

So I restart. All my computer does is hang at the Windows loading screen for like 5 minutes until it restarts by itself.

Then when it restarts I get the choice of running Windows normally, safe mode, or last known config. Last known good config does the same as running Windows normally - it hangs on the loading screen.

I've tried safe mode but it hangs when the list of drivers appears on my screen.

What do you think is wrong? I'd like to fix this without having to reinstall windows, etc. Do you think it has something to do with the fact that I uninstalled the ATI drivers?

I've updated drivers before AND did my virusscan/adaware scans before with this problem never occuring like this.

Please help, this is urgent as there are alot of important unfinished documents on there.

Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Windows XP Will Not Start, Hangs On Loading Screen, Then restarts. Cannot enter S/M.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Windows XP Will Not Start, Hangs On Loading Screen, Then restarts. Cannot enter S/M.

hey Blaine B.,

try a windows repair and see if that helps at all. bootup with your windows xp cd and then on the main console, choose install windows. press F8 to agree and then on the next screen, instead of reformatting and installing windows, choose the option that says "R=windows repair." then see if this works out for you. good luck

I upgraded my laptop hard drive to a hitachi gst travelstar 1tb 7200 rpm on 5-11-13. This morning 5-25-13 laptop started hanging on the windows loading screen with hard drive activity from a cold boot. It's done this total of 5 times, it's random, most of the time it boots up fine. After 15 min of waiting I hold the power button down to turn it off, that's the only time the health drops. Currently my laptop is running great, no problems at all. Looking at hd sentinel, it shows hard drive health at 88% and it says 'the drive tried to examine and reallocate data sector(s) 20 times. The examined data area is perfect. At this point, warranty replacement of the disk is not yet possible, only if the health drops further.' Surface disk check from HD tune and easeUS partition master reported zero bad sectors (all green). Raw read error rate is 196,609 at the time is started. It's been at 0 so far. I've created a full image with macrium reflect on an external hd and I downloaded WD data life guard and will perform a disk check with that later in the next couple days. While upgrading I lost one of the screws that holds it into the enclosure. I'm really worried, this never happened before.

A:Upgraded hard drive, windows 7 hangs randomly on start loading screen

It is possible that without the screw the hard drive is not making good contact with it's interface and that could cause these kinds of intermittent problems. So your first task is to replace that screw.

If that produces no joy then you might try running chkdsk on the drive. Be sure to have backup of your personal files before running any hard drive diagnostic.

Dear Community,
Today I went on my pc as normal to find the bugger wouldnt start past the windows loading screen,

Exactly what happends,

- I start the pc,
- Pc shows normal starting up black screen with white text every thing says its ok there.
- Pc then says something like "Windows was not closed properly"
And allows me to pick the normal safeboot safeboot with networking and safeboot with command. And sepperate is Start from last known working config.
All 4 then start to load XP and it crashes about 1 second into it.

Does any one know what the problem could be.

A:PC restarts at start of Windows loading

Yea. might be a virus. Might be your Windows installation is corrupt.

If you want to first just get to your data to back it up See How to recover your folders/files when Windows won?t boot

To fix the problem, you can also scan for a virus (as suggested) as well as repairing your Windows installation from your XP CD

Since I bought my new PC about a week ago I've been experiencing the same problem over and over again. Typically what happens is that my monitor screen suddenly goes blank, and then the CPU either restarts itself or I have to force it to restart. There is no discernible pattern to the crashes - it has happened while I was surfing the internet, editing a Word document, playing a game, and it has even happened while my PC was simply left on its own, with nothing running, not even a browser was open. I only found out because the message 'Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown' popped up.

At a rough count the above problem has occurred about 15 times. I have read this forum trying to troubleshoot the problem myself. So I have updated my drivers, BIOS, I have even uninstalled Daemon Tools and removed the sptd.sys file by referring to the instructions here. All of it hasn't worked, and I have been incredibly frustrated.

Just today I have experienced 2 crashes, and I really don't know what else to do, so I'm attaching in the form of a zip file the 2 minidump files that were created as a result. Please, could someone assist with this? I would be most grateful!

Hello,

Tricky one this.

Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop - Was working fine, I restarted the machine then the the laptop would get to "Windows XP loading" (just before the login screen) and restart itself after the login screen.

I then disabled the harddrive after it happened a fair few times. I then booted a USB stick with ubuntu on, and it loaded but if the hard drive was connected it would show lines down the screen just a few RED GREEN BLUE ones.

So this morning I placed a Latitude D630 hard drive in the laptop. It would do the same but this time with vista.

What could the problem be?

I'm wondering possibly could it be the bios? How can I over come this. There was an error with the Windows XP when I stopped the machine from restarting but rather it turning straight off it came up with a blue screen about how i have installed new software or hard ware. The only thing was before it turned off it had some form of virus on it, which disabled the microsoft essential security.

I tried installing AVG but it didn't work as Windows Installer now wasn't working. The virus seemed to had only affected the internet when I done searches a page unrelated to the search would display.

I then tried installing avg but windows installer needed ot be instaled so I installed that it restarted itself and now this is the problem I'm facing.

Hardware failuer more than likely. If you are getting lines up and down the screen it is probably a video adapter and/or it's memory. Try running some diagnostics as I think DELL has those in the startup options.

Some background. About an year ago, my hp dc7800 wouldn't start and was giving the 5 beeps with red light. I had not used it for a month, and the tech fixed it. Nie again, after an year, I turned it on. It's been working fine for a month but during that time, the pc would suddenly stop, and even task manager won't work. I robstalled windows after the first time, because the windows splash screen would get stuck. It happened again but then I reset the CMOS, and I think I used f8 and booted with last known good configuration. Now it's happened again but none of that works. The windows splash screen loads and a blue screen comes on for a very short trine before it restarts. I can't read what it says but it's not the standard BSOD,too short. I tried removing the DIMM stocks one by one but no dice. The windows startup repair said that problems had been fixed but they weren't. I've tried running a hard drive diagnostic but my cd Tom is screwed as it won't open, so I can't make a bootable cd, and the bootable USB I made doesn't work either. If you need any logs tell me and I'll post them, but my pc won't boot in safe mode either and just restarts.

translation? my hdd is screwed? or is this a fixable thing.

Basically here is what happened. i was having graphics glitches and trying to fix it, some1 suggested i had artifact problems which meant my GPU was screwed. i removed my GPU and this started happening. b4 this my computer would boot with the GPU in it but the graphics were fcked.

now my computer wont boot in normal or safe mode, with the GPU in or out. GPU in i dont see anything at all but i hear the pc booting. A:PC restarts after windows loading screen

Hi knoddy

What is the make/model of your PC?

I'll assume you know that when working on a PC, you know how to take anti-static precautions, and to have the power off & the cord unplugged.

Try:
1) Remove the add-on graphics card.
2) As the computer is powering on, immediately start tapping the key/key combo mentioned in your bios banner or bios splash screen "Press F1 (or F2, F10, DEL, etc.) to Enter Setup".
3) In the Bios, make sure the date/time settings haven't moved backwards a year or two. If the time/date have moved backwards, it's time to replace the CMOS battery (see your system manual or your vendor's support webpages for full details on how to do that).
4) Look for an item in the Bios that allows you to "Save Defaults & Exit", and choose that.
5) As the system is restarting, begin tapping the F8 key, and see if you can enter Safe Mode.
6) If you can enter Safe Mode OK, visit Device Manager in the Control Panel (Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager) and remove all the devices listed in "Display Adapters".
7) Visit Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, and remove any video/graphics drivers that might be listed there.
8) On reboot, Windows should redetect the onboard graphics, and install drivers (you might have to allow it to visit Widows Update to get the most recent driver).

If that helps things display OK, next see if you can return your video card for a refund (if it's under warra... Read more

Hello everyone, please help.

I'm having a problem in starting Windows Vista (OEM) in my Acer Aspire 5735.

Everytime my laptop reaches somewhen between loading screen to welcome screen, it unexpectedly restarts with no blue screen or any message. The restart it does cuts the power, turning it off and back on then boots normally. Making a restart loop.

This also happen to any Windows Installer. I tried booting it with Windows 7 and 8 installer but the problem still occurs.

The weird thing is when I run the Acer eRecovery Management or Windows System Repair and Recovery I created before upon boot, it runs fine and I be able to restore my laptop to its factory defaults. But when I tried to boot it again, the problem still occur.

THE PROBLEM ONLY HAPPENS WHEN I BOOT WINDOWS. But when I go to BIOS settings, booted USBDOS, flashing BIOS, it works fine...

What's the matter with my laptop? This is the weirdest problem that I'm facing when fixing computers...

These are the things that I had done but the problem still persists:

1. Flashed the BIOS from 1.07 to 1.10 using USBDOS.
2. Restored the BIOS to factory defaults.
3. Restarted the CMOS and changed the CMOS battery.
4. Removed the hard drive and booted using the Windows disc
5. Removed external devices and battery
6. Reseated the CPU and RAM
7. Diagnosed the RAM using memtestx86+ (no errors)
8. Check the power (no faults)

Please help me in solving my problem. Thanks for reading

What could it be and what should I do? I did a virus scan 1 or 2 hours before and mcaffee found 3 or 4 cases of 'Artemis' (trojan) which it removed. DOnt see it being that.

What can I try?

Hi sensrule and welcome to TSF !

To make it sure : you did a clean reinstall (formatting the drive, reinstalling windows from the start) and still got the same problems ?

What are the motherboard, PSU and RAM brands and models ? What are the PSU specifications (should be written on a sticker on the side of the power supply) ?

Could you download and install everest, or install whatever monitor program that came with your motherboard driver CD, and report here with the temperatures, fan speeds and voltages ? We don't need the whole everest report, only the informations under "sensor". We need to double-check those values with the ones from the BIOS, so enter the BIOS (repeatedly press del at computer startup), find the screen that monitors those voltages, fans speeds and temperatures and give us also the values reported there.

Could be faulty ram : download and burn Memtest86+ bootable ISO. Boot the computer on the CD : you'll have to enter the bios and change the boot device priority to CD-rom first. Let memtest run three full passes on your ram (it can take some time, you can let it run overnight). If it finds errors, you'll have to redo the tests on one ram stick at a time to identify the failing one(s) : open the case and leave only one ram stick on the motherboard (remove the power cable and touch a metal part of the case before you touch any internal components) then reboot on memtest CD. It's recommendend that you also run Windiag to double check ... Read more

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and I'm currently having quite a problem.

What happened that resulted in my problem:

1. Computer working totally fine.
2. Attempted to overclock CPU (without much experience)
3. Computer unable to boot
4. Reset CMOS Jumper to reset BIOS back to default.
5. Windows starts up normally, but hangs at the black loading screen where the windows logo is there and there's a little blue bar moving from left to right. Half way loading, the blue bar would just freeze and nothing happens even after many hours.
6. After restarting my computer, it brings me to a black screen asking me to boot safe mode/safe mode with networking/ safe mode with cmd or use last known good settings or start windows normally.
7. Only by selecting Safe mode OR Safe mode with CMD will my computer start. By selecting the others, windows still hangs at the loading screen

Things I have done to try to solve this problem (not in order):
1. Reset CMOS again
2. Replace computer battery
3. Moved around my 2x1GB RAMS and even sometimes just use 1 stick
4. Under safe mode, assessed to msconfig to select diagnostic start-up only.
5. Unplug and plug back hdd.
6. Removed wireless adapter.

Despite doing all these, the problem still continues.

Things I could not do:
1. Use the windows installation disk to conduct repair (because my disk drive is spoilt )

Lastly, these would be my computer specs

Ok so yesterday i installed a new graphics card into my friends machine, booted it up, everything was fine, installed the driver's and then rebooted, however on reboot the OS is getting stuck on the Windows XP loading screen, i tried to boot in all safe modes, and in last known good configuration, but all fail... So then i put in a Windows XP Disc that i have to try to recover to at least repair the installation, and its giving me absolutely no luck...

When it try to hit install in the Windows Set-up all im getting is the following BSOD error -

At first i thought perhaps it had something to do with installing the new graphics card, so i removed it and installed the old ATI one that was previously installed, still had no luck, i also tried to boot a different HDD from an old computer, but this also crashes at the exact same moment, what could this be guys? You might take a look in Event Viewer, looking for errors that occurred at approximate times of your freezes.

You might also take a look in C:\Windows\Minidump to see if there are any files there. If so, they may provide clues.

First off try booting to the xp cd and doing repair and when you log into the windows it asks for usually number one iwth a blank admin password at the command prompt type chkdsk /r and run that until it says no errors and then try to boot again. If that doesnt work let me know and we can try other things.

Well I had trouble finding anyone else with this exact problem. I'll try explaining this the best I can.

Well when I start my computer, it sometimes goes to the last known configuration page. The one that looks like this:

No matter which option I choose, when it gets to the Windows XP loading screen, it lags when the windows xp logo fades in, and then the computer restarts.
I did find a temporary way around this. When the computer starts up I hit F8 and i'm shown this screen:

Then, if I choose my hard drive, the loading screen comes up, and everything works fine. I figured this may be a hard drive issue, so I ordered a new hard drive. (I needed one anyway)

My original HDD is a Western Digital 75GB Raptor, the new one i bought is a Western Digital 640GB, both SATA. I tried setting them both up on my computer so I could transfer over some important files, but when I booted the computer with both of them installed, the computer would lag on the windows xp loading screen no matter what I did.

So I took that out and now i'm in the same position I was before. Anyone have any advice?

A:Windows XP Lags on Loading Screen... Restarts

Install your new drive and set the jumpers as master. Set the old drive as slave and Make sure it is disconnected. I assume you have your XP install CD? Make sure the CD/ROM Is set for first boot in the bios and install XP anew in the new drive. After the install shutdown the computer and connect the old drive and boot up the computer. Now you should be able to access the old drive and transfer your data to the new drive. Once done and confirmed that the data is transferred, you can delete, or format the old drive.

I've been researching the problem for a few hours now, and the employee had said "the computer was acting up lately" but couldn't give me any information past that.

So far I have replaced the power supply, checked the fans, checked the RAM, checked the IDE cable to the HardDrive, and made sure nothing is overheating.

In short Im at a loss here and I can't seem to figure it out. He needs the PC back ASAP and I'm running low on time now.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Does choosing safe mode allow you to boot the PC to Windows? It may be that Windows is crashing or hitting a blue screen and restarting because it's configured to do that.

Hi

Suddenly having serious problems with my computer.

Has been working fine for months but when I turned it on yesterday I started having problems.

The problem is that the computer starts to boot up fine, but when it reaches the Windows Loading screen it restarts the whole process of booting up again. This loop continues and does not stop.

Have tried starting the PC in safe more and all the other different modes but it doesnt make a difference.

Have also tried changing the boot order of the drives, no difference.

Unfortunatly I do not own a CD to re-boot or re-install the OS as the computer was passed onto my from a relative. They dont have the CD either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have alot of photos and documents on the PC that I would like to get back!

Help!

I shutdown my pc last night. Everything was working fine... then this afternoon when i went to turn it on. It started up like normal... then it went into the windows "has not shutdown properly" screen. So i chose "Start Windows normally" I get to the Windows loading screen. After that it restarts. Is this hardware conflict or just a plain virus? Any way to fix this? It does the same thing with every other option on that screen. And it will never get past the Windows Loading screen...

Try booting to Safe Mode, and run a chkdsk from there.

Hi everyone. Okay, as the title says, I cannot get my computer past the Windows loading screen.I tried in safe mode, taking out one stick of RAM, switching the sticks around, anything I thought would work and nothing.I had recently gotten rid completely of AntivirusPro 2009 and could finally download AVG.After downloading it, I did a full scan and it found roughly 6 viruses. The one virus that I thought was odd was winlogon.exe, obviously you can't delete that and I'm pretty sure AVG has no access to delete that either. But anyways, after all that happened, I had to restart my computer as AVG instructed, thus starting the endless cycle of restarting after the windows loading screen. If you have any tips or suggestions, please let me know.

Help! Windows hangs at loading screen Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and I'm currently having quite a problem.

A:Windows hangs at loading (XP logo) screen

Boot into Safe Mode, do Start > Run, type CMD press Enter
In the new window type CHKDSK X: /F where X is the drive letter your XP is on
(usually C, there is a space before and after X: ) press Enter
type Y to confirm, press Enter
then restart the computer and CHKDSK will check the disk.

If that didn't fix it boot using Safe Mode again and try a System Restore to a time before you tried to overclock the PC.

I need help booting my cpu because it hangs at the loading screen. I have read a lot of posts but none of them help because I can't get the cpu in safe mode. I have tried all the options and all kinds of boot disks. It won't let me use my keyboard to highlight any of the options where it says windows had problems loading and gives several options like safe mode or last good config. The keyboard will let me into the bios but after that it won't work. f8 won't take me to safe mode and it won't boot to the cd either. I had this problem once a few weeks back but I created a boot disk and after I booted from that for several times it started booting on it's own. I got the boot disk from a web site but it wasn't an xp boot disk.(i think it was an 98se or me disk) Well of course now either I have lost the disk or it just won't work anymore. I need to find a way to at least boot it long enough to get the data off. the file system is ntfs and I am using windows xp pro. if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

So I am stuck with this windows XP Professional machine with no information as to why it has failed to load

Note: I have an untouched hard disk image that i can reload over and over to keep trying to fix the computer.

So far I have tried this in the following order:

1) Boot into Windows XP Safe Mode and disable all non-microsoft services and start-up programs.
2) Virus Scan, Malware Scan, Adware Scan, Rootkit Scan, Rootkit Scan. (0 results found).
3) Chkdsk /r /x
4) Seatools HDD Long Test (HDD PASSED)
5) Memtest86+ (Passed 100%)
6) Repair the Windows XP Installation by popping in the Windows XP Professional CD and pressing "R" at installation selection

Now I cannot boot into safe mode, and I cannot get windows xp to load either. Any suggestions?

I can always recover the OS back into its original state (broken but loading safe mode) but please let me know how to fix this.

Hi there peeps, Recently purchased and built my new pc but seem to be having problems.

I installed the OS and all was working nicely, then I installed the supplied motherboard chipset drivers + latest nvidia graphics drivers (both of these drivers were the correct ones) and then after rebooting I couldnt get back into windows, it would just hang on the loading screen and just appear to load forever.

I uninstalled the drivers and tryed to reboot again, still the same problem, I can only get into "safe" mode.

I have tryed using a driver cleaner to remove any other of the MB + gfx drivers that were installed but still no luck on getting into windows via "normal" mode, only "safe" mode works.

Im thinking its a GFX driver problem but really dont know how to try and determine this.

I have tryed disabling everything onboard, usb, firewire, etc (i was told by someone to disable onboard gfx and this might sort it but i couldnt find the option to)

Ive checked some of the error messages in "event viewer" - "system" and got things like this:

"The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
Fips
Processor

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

Hopefully you guys could shead some light on this as its really beginging to frustrate me,

Many thanks

Mark

When you turn it on, it loads all the way up to the Windows loading screen where the progress bar loads/acts normally, but the next screen is black and does not progress past this.

What I've tried:
Booting in VGA mode. Same deal.
Booting in safe mode. Starts to load the drivers/sys files, then hangs and does not progress.
Booting with "Last known good configuration". Same deal.
Hooking it up to an external monitor and doing all of the above, no change in behavior (note: when the monitor is black it doesn't go inactive - i.e. the power light is green and not orange)

Pulled the hard drive and ran checkdisk. No bad sectors.

Booted with XP CD and started the Recovery Console to attempt using some commands, but am stopped due to this error:

Welcome to TSF....

Give this a try:

If you have a Full Operating System on CD then you can try this:

1. Configure the computer to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. For information about how to do this, see your computer documentation, or contact your computer manufacturer.
2. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.
3. When you receive the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM.
4. When you receive the "Welcome to Setup" message, press R to start the Recovery Console.
5. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you have to use from the Recovery Console.
6. When you are prompted, type the administrator password, and then press ENTER (if none was set, leave it blank and press ENTER).
7. At the command prompt, type bootcfg /list, and then press ENTER. The entries in your current Boot.ini file appear on the screen.
8. At the command prompt, type bootcfg /rebuild, and then press ENTER. This command scans the hard disks of the computer for Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows NT installations, and then displays the results. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to add the Windows installations to the Boot.ini file. For example, follow these steps to add a Windows XP installation to the Boot.ini file:

Hi, so I woke up this morning and turned on my pc and it turned on then went to a screen that said, turn on pc in: safe mode, safe mode with networking, start windows normally, etc.

So I clicked on all of them and the result was the same, It took me to the windows XP loading screen were the blue bar at the bottom would begin to load and then it would just restart, it has been doing this all day.

I have been googling this issue all day but I do not know what to do.

Originally I presumed my power supply might be at fault since it seemed to be making lots of noises the past 4 months.
I have read that faulty RAM could also be the issue, I am currently running memtest86.
I have heard of people reformatting and the problem persisted.

I just need some advice.

btw, this is posted from my other pc

I have a Gateway computer, Windows XP.
My computer's been having a problem, every time I try to go through Safe Mode, it would always restart.
So therefore, no SAFEMODE for me.
When I try to start up normally, my computer would hang on Loading your personal settings. This one time, however, did go through that and I can't do anything, my mouse over the taskbar would display a hour glass. There are no desktop icons either, but I don't even get that anymore, it hangs on the Loading your personal settings now.
Please help me, and I also do not have any WIndows CD and I do wish to save some money.. Thank you for your time and effort.

Hi there,

I have just started having this problem. Everything was running fine previously. I hadn't changed anything except for a couple of recommended settings given by system mechanic which I've had on my system for a couple of years now.
When I boot up the computer, directly after the Microsoft logo and green progress bar it hangs for up to 10 mins on a black screen. The mouse arrow is the only thing visible. The HD activity light is off. After that windows loads. The computer behaves as normal after that. I reinstalled windows and all other software, which seemed to sort the issue until I installed sp3, which has now brought me back to square 1.

Computer is running xp pro (media centre) with sp3.
I am using Avast free Anti-virus, Comodo Dragon Firewall and Malwarebytes pro which I've been using for more than 3 years. I also have ccleaner and spywareblaster, again for more than 3 years.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm posting this on my laptop at the moment.

Earlier today my computer froze, so I reset it. My hand twitched and I pressed the switch twice in the same second, which is bad. I think it might have cause my computer to short out, but I sure hope not. So I turn it on and I get to the usual "Choose how you want to reboot Windows" screen after your computer gets turned off automatically. I chose every option and each one lead to the same result: they all went to the Windows loading screen and my computer reset from there.

Has anyone experienced this before and/or knows how to fix it? I really don't want to have to wipe my hard drive since at the moment I had just finished downloading King Crimson and Porcupine Tree ><
