Compatible SSD for Tecra A8-133

Q: Compatible SSD for Tecra A8-133

Hello,

I own a Tecra A8-133 (PTA83E-0E403MBT ).
To give a kick to my aging laptop I bought a corsair neutron GTX SSD. Unfortunately, after
many attempts, and some corsair support, it seems the SSD is not compatible with that TECRA.

I'm ready to buy a new one, but, obviously I want to be 100% sure the SSD is compatible this time.

How can I find a list of compatible devices for this laptop ?

As a SATA 1 laptop, I know the performance will be restrained, but I don't care too much.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Compatible SSD for Tecra A8-133

Hi

What?s wrong exactly?

I found some specification of the mentioned SSD drive from Corsair and it looks like the SSD drive is designed to support the latest high-speed standard SATA III (6Gb/s).
But it?s seems to be fully backward compatible with SATA II and SATA I. So it should be compatible?

From my knowledge there are no any special info regarding the SDD dive compatibility.
In some cases the SSD drive manufacturers provides an SSD drive firmware updates and sometimes such update helps to sort out some issues.

I have a Tecra M10-1KR (GM45/GM47 chipset) and would like to upgrade it with a ADATA XM13 60GB (mSATA). There is one free PCIe mini slot unter the keyboard, but unfortunately i found no information if the mainboard will accept mSATA modules.

Regards, Harald Katzler.

A:Tecra M10 mSATA compatible?

I cannot say for sure if this mini PCI module would be compatible.
Fact is that the TECRA M10 is equipped with Intel GM45/GL40?Cantiga (G) MCH? as North Bridge, Intel ICH9M as South Bridge and R5C847 as Card Controller.

The both miniPCI card slots are used for 3G or Intel Turbo Memory and WLan
Some models supports Intel Turbo Memory.
Intel Turbo Memory (Robson) in PCI Express Mini Card slot 2 and also some models are equipped with PCI Express Mini Card type 3G card in PCI Express Mini Card slot 2.

I possess a tecra A10 complete with Windows Vista Business installed (and backed up to an image file using Easeus Todo backup

However I also have access to a Tecra M10 which came with no operating system, although the COA sticker (product key) is likewise for a windows Vista Business.

My question is: would my Windows Vista Business back up from the A10 work on the M10 (ie would it load onto the M10 hard drive and then work properly

If anyone can advise on this matter I would be appreciative please

Best wishes

A:Can I use Tecra A10 OS disk to install OS on Tecra M10?

At first I must say that Toshiba recovery image is created for each notebook model separately and it is 100% created to work on specific model. Why?
Every notebook model has different hardware platform and all drivers, tools and utilities for certain model are part of recovery image. These recovery images are also tested.

Generally speaking if both models have identical hardware platform (hardware parts) it can be used.

Dear forum
The above says it all really.

I see the two look similar, but one is smaller. Are these two models different in other ways please.
Ian

A:Difference between Tecra A10 and Tecra M10

Of course the both notebooks are different.
There are different Tecra A10 models and there are different Tecra M10 units.

For example:
Tecra *A10-13B* supports an Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 2,26 GHz CPU and Intel GM45 chipset.

Tecra *A10-1D2* supports an Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 2.80Ghz CPU and Intel GM45 chipset

You can find details about different discontinued notebook models here:
http://www.toshiba.eu/discontinued-products/
Then you can compare all the hardware parts.

I've decided to try my hand at building my own PC. I intend it to be a medium - high end gaming computer. I've got everything figured out (at least I hope) I'm just wanting a second opinion about my choice of motherboard and CPU. I'm pretty sure they are compatible, at least in theory, I was just wondering if anyone had any first hand experience with them, or any advice for me. Hey, if you feel like it, recommend something bigger and better. I have a pretty good budget for this (within reason of course, nothing too outrageous).

CPU : AMD Phenom X4 9950 Quad Core Processor 2.60GHz, 4MB Cache, 2000MHz (4000 MT/s) FSB, Agena, Retail, Socket AM2+, with Fan (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4016668&CatId=3496)

Motherboard : FX nForce 750a SLI Motherboard - NVIDIA 750a SLI, Socket AM2/AM2+, ATX, Audio, Video, HDMI, DVI, PCI Express 2.0, Gigabit LAN. S/PDIF, USB 2.0, eSATA, RAID (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3930721&CatId=13)

One big question I have, however, is whether a GeForce 8800GT graphics card with its super long design would fit correctly or at all in that motherboard. The 2nd PCI-E slot has to be the first one used, so I couldn't put it in the top slot. I think it would fit, but not quite sure.

Anyways, thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to have a read through this, and an extra thanks to anyone with any advice or comments.

A:Compatible, or not compatible, that is the question.

why can u not use the first slot? the only problem should be with the case. put the mem. in before u put the video card in.

Hi,

I'm trying one of this popular caddy's that allows me to put a second hard drive in the optical slot bay, I use a Sata to Sata adapter, so there is not really an adapter besides connecting properly:

[http://www.akasa.co.uk/update.php?tpl=product/product.detail.tpl&no=181&type=Enclosures&type_sub =2.5%20Enclosure&model=AK-OA2SSA-BK]

My problem is with Toshiba BIOS that is expecting a ODD device in that Sata port and cames out with a "CD-ROM error", disabling the Sata port.

I have a workaround, if I start the PC, after BIOS post with anything in ODD bay, after starting Windows, I insert the second HDD in the ODD bay, go to "Windows Device Manager" do a "Check for hardware changes" and voil?, the second HDD is working fine, to me this proves a BIOS limitation.

Is there any help, a Beta BIOS or something else, I have the last BIOS 3.00 for this machine installed.

A:Tecra M10-17U use second HDD in the ODD bay

Please check this thread:
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=39412

It seems that Tecra M10 does not support an select bay which would allow you to use an 2nd HDD instead of ODD.
As far as I know select bay is supported on Tecra M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, S1, S2

A:Can I use SSD for Tecra A8

Generally speaking it should not be a big problem to use an SSD instead of an common HDD.
The notebook supports the SATA interface and you have to use an 2.5? SATA SSD drive.
I cannot recommend any specific brand but in some very rare cases it could be possible that you will need to update the SSD firmware providing by an SSD manufacturer?

Hi,

i bought the Z40 with a 500 GB HDD. As a replacement i bought the following SSD:

Crucial CT512MX100SSD1 - 500 GB

Unfortunately i didn't get it to work. On the BIOS i can see that the system recognizes the ssd. But neither the restored system boots, nor windows 8.1 Retail installs. Are there any known compatibility issues?

The problems persist whether the bios setting is UEFI oder CSM.

I upgraded to the latest bios version to 3.7, but that didn't change the result.

A:How to reinstall my Tecra M11-103?

Hi

According notebook specification your Tecra was delivered with preinstalled WIN7 64BIT PROFESSIONAL and you got additional WXP DVD. Original Win7 recovery image was saved on HDD and using preinstalled Toshiba recovery media creator you have had possibility to back-up recovery image and create bootable recovery installation disc.
How it works is described in user?s manuals document.

I don?t know if you have created this disc but now after WXP installation you need this recovery disc. Of course, if you want to have ?factory settings?, you need this disc. Other way, you can obtain Microsoft installation disc and install Win7. All necessary drivers, tools and utilities you can find and download from Toshiba download page.

I hope you understand the situation but if you have more questions you are welcome.

Regards,

A:Tecra A10 - No Sound using Win XP

> I use Windows XP.

Ok, I though similar issues with Win XP on other notebooks with new HD audio from Realtek.
The point is that you need SP2 and SP3!

The SP2 and SP3 provides important fixes and patches for HD audio?
So first of all uninstall the installed Realtek audio driver.
Then install the SP2 and SP3.
Then go to the device manager and delete the devices marked with yellow exclamation mark.
Then reboot the notebook.
Now Win XP should found a new audio device and should ask for the driver.
No you should install the sound driver from Realtek.
Reboot once again? and now the sound should works fine?

Hi. I've got a failing hard disk in my Tecra, the existing disk is a Fujitsu MHZ2120BH G1. In an ideal world I would swap this disk for a solid state but I'm wary having read of others' problems installing SSDs. Has anyone any experience of successfully (or otherwise!) of doing this. Alternatively, I'm quite content to stick with a HDD but I wonder whether I can increase the size of the disk from the existing 120Gb? When it finally boots with windows xp, there are horizontal lines across the screen with different shades of the colour. The cursor has a box of lines around it. I think it's a VGA card issue but am not sure; has anyone had similar problems? I have visited irisvista on the web, where there are some instructions on disassembly. I got to the connector to the LCD and repositioned it, and noticed that when I appllied pressure in this area I could get near normal display.... can anyone shed some light???

Have read many posts and tried what was suggested. I pulled the 2 memory modules and cleaned the contacts with an eraser. I inserted only one of the modules at a time, switching slots etc. and then powered it up each time. Once with only 1 module installed, I got the WINDOWS XP startup screen (with the moving bar below) and then the Toshiba Splash screen appeared and then the screen went blank again. Seems like the hard drive starts up and then stops. The DVD drive seems to respond with a low clicking sound. I hear a couple chirps/clicks from the hardware but no beeps whatsoever.

I'm guessing bad RAM. I will try with some new RAM later when I get some.

Since I did get the machine to sort of startup once, am I safe to assume the BIOS and Motherboard are okay ?

The only thing happens , is that I see the upstartscreen (in touch with tomorrow TOSHIBA) and icons at the underside of the screen indicating the drives. Then nothing happens any more, it doe not start up.

I can by entering F12 in a new startup procedure change to startup via CD rom, but this also has no effect.

Also it is not possible to enter the bios (esc + F1).

The keyboard is functioning because, after a while every touch result is a short " beep" .

I have removed the battery for a while and tried again with no result.

In some cases this is not possible if the notebook series has been discontinued.

Usually you could order the recovery disks there.
But if it?s not possible, then you will need to install the Windows using an Microsoft disk!

Hi All,

I have a Tecra P4 - PTS40A-02100V which will not recognise the new Hitachi 80GB disk (HTS541080G9SA00). The laptop is out of warranty and replacement disk was purchased. This is the second new disk the supplier has sent me. The supplier is an official Toshiba supplier in Australia. Customer has paid ~$400AUD for the disk, so this could be an expensive exercise.

I am able to get a vanilla Toshiba Restore to work on the PC, however our organisation uses a WinPE based PXE boot environment to kick off image and build of Windows XP. Using a generic Windows XP in our environment is not possible.

Diskpart in WinPE will not recognise the disk. Partition Magic and other popular apps will recognise the disk, others won't. I can create an NTFS partition and format. Can create basic MBR and MFT, no luck recognising. Also I can use the disk in a USB caddy in Windows XP on another PC fine.

This new disk will display the same issues in another known working P4. I see no options in BIOS to get around the issue. I have updated the BIOS to v3.20, however the result is the same.

Any clues?

I want to increase the amount of RAM in my laptop but I do not know does my laptop can handle the memory faster than DDR2 533. I have Windows XP Tablet 32bit, I know it will handle only about 3.5 GB of RAM but it's better than 3 GB

I also want to change the hard drive. My current drive is HTS541080G9SA00 Hitachi, 80 GB, 5400 rpm SATA . Will it run with a bigger hard drive with speed 7200 rpm?

I installed all the most recent official drivers and BIOS

What else I can improve

A:How I can improve my Tecra M7?

Hello

According the specifications of Tecra M7-132 on Toshiba page it supports up to 4GB RAM but all 32bit OS support only up to 3.2GB RAM and for Windows XP 2GB is more than enough because it doesn?t need much RAM capacity.
The specification for RAM is DDR2-667.

Regarding the HDD: Larger HDDs are no problem because there is no capacity limit on SATA interface. That means you can also install 500GB HDD or larger. Only important is that you buy a 2.5? HDD with SATA interface.
Also 7200rpm shouldn?t be a problem but they creating more heat and need more battery power. Usually 5400rpm are enough and quieter.

I wonder whether anyone might be able to answer a question for me.

I have a nice Tecra R10-11B and it has been very good for quite a few years. It runs Win XP and does everything asked of it without a problem.

What I would like to find out, though, is whether it is possible to fit a quicker CPU. I have a suspicion that the installed cpu may be permanently fixed and is not replaceable but I would like to find out.

I had played with the idea of replacing the Intel P9400 Core Duo with something a bit new, to allow perhaps installing Win 7 and more memory. There is 3gb of ram installed.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A:CPU upgrade on Tecra R10

The CPU is socked and this means that the CPU is removable.
But the important fact is that notebook manufacturers don?t support CPU upgrade.
One of the main reasons is the BIOS which is mostly modified by notebook manufacturers.

But let?s start with some basic knowledge:
The CPU has to be supported by chipset and BIOS.

So let?s check what CPU would be supported by Mobile Intel GS45 Express Chipset which is part of the Tecra R10-11B
Here on this Intel Ark page you can find compatible CPUs
http://ark.intel.com/products/35505/Intel-82GS45-Graphics-and-Memory-Controller-Hub#@compatibility

But even if the chipset would support new CPU, some compatibility problems may appear because of the BIOS.
However, the Intel Core 2 Duo CPUs ( Montevina Penryn) were equipped in different R10 models, so probably other Intel Core 2 Duo CPUs would be supported.

By the way: the RAM could be upgraded up to 4GB RAM

Got a Tecra M1 refusing to power up since few days.

The M1 has 3 led to indicate: (a) the AC power is connected (b) the power is on (c) the battery is available / charging.
Each of these can be green or amber.

The symptoms are the following:
- with AC adapter and batteries plugged, (a) and (c) are green
- when powering the laptop, the leb (b) is turing green for a fraction of a second; then start blinking amber with more or less 1 second frequency. Got a intermediate beep on speaker with the same frequency.
- display is bank. Not even bios is displayed.

I tried already the following:
1) remove AC and battery, wait a while, plug both and restart. Same issue
2) remove battery, boot on AC. Same issue.
3) remove AC, boot on battery. Same issue.

Any idea ?
Does anyone know the meaning of having this "power-o" led blinking amber.
Thanks.

Hi buddy,

> remove AC and battery, wait a while, plug both and restart. Same issue
Good job because this was described [HERE|http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=21]

Unfortunatley that?s everything what you can do if your notebook doesn?t start. At the moment it looks like a serious hardware malfunction and the mainboard or CPU could be affected.

I would recommend contacting an authorized service provider in your country. The guys can make an exact diagnostic and tell you how much a repair would cost.

Good luck! :)

We bought a Crucial M550 256GB disk and want to replace in a Toshiba Tecra Z50-Av1

We do not want to make any transfer of data or cloned.
We want to do a clean install with Windows 8.1
The BIOS recognizes the SSD

But when you install Windows 8.1 does not detect any disk connected to the unit and requested additional drivers. Windows not detect drive

A:Tecra Z50-A-11V: New SSD but Win 8.1 does not detect it

Hi

Did you solve this issue?
Could you install the Windows 8.1 system on this SSD drive?

I think the additional driver installation while setup procedure isn?t necessary since Win 8.1 should already contain the essential drivers.
From my point of few there could be an compatibility issue (maybe SSD firmware update would solve this).

How about the usage of other SSD drives? Do you have the same problem using other SSD drives from other manufactures?

Feedback would be appreciated.

After reading a recent article in PCPRO it mentioned about changing the wireless card in you laptop to a quicker one, has anybody done this and if so I would like to know the following things:

1) how and what does it require
2) How much was the replacement and what model
3) what is the situation with warranty and firmware.

A:Wi-Fi upgrade on Tecra M10

I have a few questions for you:

Which M10 do you have exactly (M10-xxx)?
Is maybe Intel WiFi Link 5100AGN WLAN card inside?
If yes, which standard you want to use to get it faster than standard N?

Hi!

I'm in a bit of a dilemma. The current Tecra Z50 is extremely close to what I want in a notebook but the thing is, I currently don't really need it and I don't have the time to set it up. So I would buy one and have it lying around until late summer.

If I get one now and there's a new model out in summer, which I like even better, I would be very disappointed but on the other hand if I want to buy one in the summer and there's a new one with less connectors, a glossy screen with one of those extremely high resolutions or maybe without the pointing stick, it would be even worse!

So the question is: What can I expect from the Tecra Z50 in the future? I know that I probably won't get the information I need but I still had to post this.

Thanks!

A:The future of the Tecra Z50?

Future of Tecra Z50?
From my experience, Toshiba releases different notebook series within short spaces of time.
In most cases this applies to the ?everyday home? models like Satellite models.

The product life cycle of notebooks belonging to business segment like for example Tecra or Portege series is much longer? so from my point of few the Tecra Z50 should be available in the next couple of month.

But even if new models would be released, I think that older models should be still provided by some online dealers?

Does any one see any problems swapping out the 160GB HDD for a 1TB HDD i have already partitioned/formatted and installed XP PRO on the 1 TB HDD in my Satellite M-105 and it is working fine in there but would prefer it in the faster newer TECRA Laptop.

Thanks

A:Tecra M10 - HDD upgrade

Hi

I think this should not be a big problem since the SATA controller should handle the 1TB HDD.

You can test it using the HDD from the M105? the replacement is not difficult and both units M105 and M10 supports the same SATA HDD.
