I opened a PDF file in notepad then in Word, now all PDF in my windows explorer shows a Word-like icon and file opens automatically in word. I checked folder options and rebooted the machine, but it still shows that icon.

How can I get the PDF file type icon back and file opens in Adobe automatically?
Thanks for any tips!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have generated a spreadsheet using excel. The data is stored in a worksheet column that looks like

I would like to 'copy' this data as it looks here to a notepad type file with the extension .djk. A file name like data.djk would be used. The data is used as an input file to another program

Is it possible to develop a macro that does this automatically in excel? The file name would be in a cell in the worksheet.

Currently I am using Excel 2003

To make a long story short, every thing thats of the "Application file type" now opens in Notepad 2. It's not just .exe or a specific file format, but of the file type, kind of like "audio" as a file type but "application" (sorry if its a bit mundane, but i had problems communicating that fact to someone else when i asked them for help) Anyway, the .exe file association fix won't work because of this, and there is no "Application file type" fix.

I use Vista Ultimate (German Language). The messages are perhaps not translated exactly.

Problem: When I open the program „windows-contacts“ (in "All Programs")

the message appears: "Error during opening the windows-adressbook-file"
(in German: Fehler beim ?ffnen der Adressbuchdatei).

This is obviously the reason that Windows-Mail cannot be started.

The error in windows-contacts appears also whe in Windows-Mail is totally removed from the computer (registry and AppData).
This error started after trying to remove the folder „Contacts“ from desktop to D:.

It ist the computer of a friend, but he will thrash me, when his mail-program does not work.

Hello Everyone,

I have kind of an odd question, I have been looking into changing file type icons when I came across an interesting conflict.
I would like to be able to change the file type icon for all .exe files to the same file type icon within a file explorer. If you were to try to do this, all icons that are associated with each .exe program becomes the same icon no matter where they are located.

The thing is that usually when I am in a file explorer the .exe files are installers and when I have .exe files in places like on my desktop, in the start menu, and in the taskbar, they are for launching already installed programs.

Can anyone think of a possibly way that could solve this conflict easily with some kind of setting or software.

I thought maybe something with shortcuts but that turned out to not work for me.
I also believe that .ico icon files have multiple sizes within them but I don't think there would be a realistic way to edit each of them for all the programs installed.

Has anyone else ever tried something like this? or have any solutions that I am not aware of?
Thank You

A:Changing .exe File Type Icons In File Explorer But Nowhere Else

File Explorer is on Windows 8/8.1, renamed from Windows Explorer on Windows 7 back to Windows95/Windows NT4.

Usually an .exe file for running a program will have its own icon, right-click a Shortcut, Properties, Change Icon to see what the .exe file has in it. Some programs may have a separate icon in their Folder in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86). If no icons are found Windows will put up a panel with a number of choices but they are more generic, mostly for Windows things.

Installable .exe files will have more of a generic icon and are of only a few types.

In windows Explorer files of the extention .avi will have an icon that is that little film strip with a screen shot from the video file. Matroska files (.mkv) only show a generic icon in explorer? How can i fix this so that the Matroska file will show the screen shot from the video file as is does with avi files in windows explorer? I have Home Premium? Thanks:)

A:Matroska File to show screen shot as icon like an avi file does in explorer

I wrote a similar post about mov files in here
Have a quick read at it (to understand what you're doing and why it's the way it is), then grab some matroska directshow filters. There's a list here: http://www.matroska.org/downloads/windows.html

P.S: Keep in mind the filter sparses the mkv file only (aka the container), it does not decode the audio or video stream inside of it. If you're only getting a filter but can't see the video, it would be because you're missing the codec (compressor-decompressor) for the video stream. I'm mentioning it because mkv files are usually encoded using codecs for which the avi container is not suitable (for example H.264 or AC3). If that's the problem, be sure to get codecs too (for example ffdshow-tryouts for H.264, or AC3filter for AC3).

Anytime I drag a file(s) in a folder window, a translucent, oversized icon follows the mouse pointer, partially obscuring up to 4 nearby items.

Can this effect be disabled? I'm sure somebody at MS thought it was slick idea, but it just gives me a headache. I haven't found a setting that controls it -- maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot. (Am guessing, while this isn't an "animation" per se, it's in the same general category.)

Thanks a ton for any clues.

I recently had to do a system restore and now my .jpg and jpeg files have a bad file icon. They still do open with the windows pic program as I want them to - but only on the admin accout, I usually surf and play and do everything else with a user account, and even if I reset everything under folder options for the file associacions it somehow doesn't apply to the other account.
The funny thing is that windows tells me in the file association menu that I changed the file association's properties and can set them back to standart "photo suite 6" - a program that I uninstalled ages ago ... can I somehow set this back to the normal winxp picture and fax displaying thing?

I keep losing the icons in Explorer, even with a fresh install of W7. It takes some time, but sooner or later they disappear. It's always Internet Explorer first (associated with .mht files) and now I've lost Chrome (associated with .htm).

Any ideas as to why this happens? Is there any fix you guys know of?

Rebuilding the W7 icon cache has not worked in the past.

A:Lost File Type Icons in Windows Explorer

Hello IveyLeaguer,

The icon cache would have no affect on file associations. They are two different animals.

The most common reason for file association issues is folks changing them using Open with.

If you like, you could use the tutorial below to quickly restore the default association of any file extension.Default File Type Associations - Restore
If you are sure that you or another user is not changing the file associations, then I would recommend to do a full scan of your system with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free to help make sure that your system is clean.

Microsoft today rolled out a massive update for Windows 10 preview builds and in addition to a plethora of new features, the company also introduced a completely new icon for File Explorer.

The default file manager on Windows 10 PCs, File Explorer has been around for many years (it was previously known as Windows Explorer), but its looks and features have barely changed in the latest Windows versions.

Users, however, are still hoping for a bigger overhaul of the app and one of the main requests is support for tabs that would make it easier to work with multiple folders in a single window.

New almost-monochrome icon
In the meantime, Microsoft is working on making File Explorer better match the looks of Windows 10, so the company introduced a new icon that follows the monochrome design language used for the other icons in the operating system.

?You will notice a little bit of color still present in the icon. The design team was a bit hesitant to completely let go of the yellow because it has become such a familiar part of the File Explorer branding,? Gabe Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, explained.

?They explored a variety of different ways to keep the yellow and still match the cleanliness of the black and white Windows app icons. The new icon you see in this build is where the design team landed that is closer to monochrome, but still has the familiar shape that users recognize, and has a nod to the yellow that you see all throughout File Explorer. This is weird. In the last day or so the default icon for .htm files has disappeared. I use FF, so my .htm icon is the FF version.

There have been no FF updates in the last couple days, and the other FF icons (e.g. hyperlink files) are still normal. But the .htm icon has reverted to the Windows 'unknown file type' icon.

I opened the Folder Options/File Type settings and the icon still shows up there for the .htm file type settings. I have tried changing it to something else (thinking maybe some minor Windows Update setting blocked FF icons from being used for Windows files...because that totally sounds like something MS would do). But nothing shows up for that file type icon anymore.

Any one else ever experience this?

A:File type icon disappeared?

Check these articles:

XP: Just refresh the icon cache by deleting the IconCache.db file from your profile directory (usually /Documents and Settings/Username/Local Settings/Application Data). It will be automatically recreated.

However, you may have to re-associate the file type you want to the program with which you it to open.

I work with a lot of animation sequences, and when using Win explorer it has always irked me that if I want to view anything but list or details view then the filenames are truncated.

This is a problem because the sequences I work with often have long(ish) names and numerically iterated, generally being suffixed by a padded number.

Is there a way that I can view tiles, or content, or icons without having the filenames truncated?

(Bonus question: how come sometimes I get the option to view 'content' and other times the option is not there?)

Thanks peeps.

Example image of what I'm talking about:

A:Windows explorer - How do I view full file names AND see an icon

You could try these options:
Increasing the Icon Spacing (horizontal and vertical) can allow for longer filenames.
Setting the icons to the largest size can also allow you to view longer names.
Also you could use Details view and have the Preview Pane active.
That program seems to be using the old style Windows dialogue boxes, so I'm not sure if any of the options (I listed above) will have much effect.

I'm running WindowsXP Professional on a Dell Latitude D600, and I recently swapped out my laptop base unit, due to a failure with the prior unit. I successfully swapped over all the peripherals from my old laptop unit (screen, drives, Wi-Fi, battery, etc.) and the laptop started up normally, with no problems.

While not a problem, I just now noticed that on Windows Explorer, under [file] Name column, I see that for everyone of the files listed, there a very small "green checkmark" or a "yellow exclamation mark" in the lower right-hand corner of the symbol that designates the file type (Word, Excel, PDF, etc.). I've never seen that under Windows Explorer before, working this laptop - or any computer for that matter.

Anybody have an explanation for the mysterious symbols that have shown up, all of a sudden? Thanks.

Hello, I am running Windows XP. How do I get Windows to remember the selected file when returning to the parent folder? I know Explorer can do this, I have several installations that do this. How do I get my other systems to reselect the folder? For instance: Double click My Computer. Double click C: Double click any folder, best not to use the first one for this example. Press the Back Space key. You are returned to the parent folder but the folder that you entered is not selected. How do I get Windows Explorer to re-select that folder? I use Google SketchUp a lot and each new model/file I create, SketchUp makes a .skb back up file of the last save. I was able to create a subkey in the registry to associate a different icon file for the .skb files but it does not change the icon if the folder view is set to medium, large, or extra large icons and gives a thumbnail preview of the file contents.

Examples of the same files in the same folder below.

Notice how in the thumbnail preview all the file type icons are red and in the detailed list view the .skb file icons are black and the regular .skp files are red, like I want them.

In this particular folder it does not matter, just an example. But when navigating through other folders that contain many image files as well as the .skb & .skp files it can be confusing to tell which is which and I don't want to edit the wrong one. The thumbnail preview can be very helpful so I am trying to avoid changing the folder views.

If anyone has an idea of how to change that icon in the thumbnail view it would save me a lot of time and confusion, thanks in advance.

Ok so here's what I used to have orange boring cones for .mp3 .mp4 . all my many file types that I would look at daily.

I really need to change the look of things. So I downloaded something called "Filetypesman" which is totally freak out of this world for a quick way to change file typ icons in windows 10.

So I switched the file types icons with these pretties. For .mp3 its the little pink butterflys and for .mp4 and .flv there both flowers.

It looks like this! picture below.
Now once you see the image you will notice that for the first icon its a pink flower and then for the second its a folder icon from that show. Which is just something I used quickly to see if it would work. Now here's what I did I used filetypesman to change the file types icons to flowers and butterflys but for the shows folder icon I made a shortcut from the first file and changed its icon. But then I'm stuck with 2 of the same things in the same folder. Is here any way to remove the original file to keep the shortcut or to just change the icons on the originals.

I already have the folder icons changed I was working on that pretty late last night.

So now I was wondering if there's a way to change the flowers to something more specific like a image turned into a icon from that show. This happened awhile ago and I'm only NOW questioning its origins, but after a certain update, (or maybe not) a handful file extensions got their default icons changed to a rather peculiar one. It's a built-in icon, but doesn't fit JPEG, PNG, RAR, VHD, or even BMP. I've changed them back to default using FileTypesMan, but I noticed this on my old and current installation of Windows 7. Old was clean, current is in-place. Is there a certain update that causes Windows to change the default icons for some extensions? I mean, it's not major, but just curious why it goes through the trouble to mess with the default icons. On some other computers, such as the ones within my school, I've noticed that some programs show the proper icon within the shortcut properties, but when said program is open on the taskbar, it shows this one (attached) or the icon of a completely different application, like Microsoft word showing the icon of a database file or PowerPoint. Any ideas?

I have the Sims 2 on my computer and have recently discovered how to download custom stuff for it. Initially, however, I could not get it to work and in my frustration I decided 'why not, it couldn't hurt' and changed what the downloaded files opened with. I realised eventually that I simply hadn't clicked the 'enable custom content' button in the game. The files still work in the game, because I did not change the file extension, but now in the folder they all have the same icon (not the piece of paper with the box and six dots inside it). Unfortunately, I later discovered that some files need to be doule-clicked to install properly, but now whenever I double-click on them, the program I selected out of the list with the unchangable 'Always use this program to open the selected type of file' button, it opens with that program instead. How do I revert it to the unknown program (piece of paper with box and six dots)?

A:Changed file type - can't revert back

If you right-click the file, there will usually be an option under 'Open' that says 'Open with...', select that, and you can pick the program from a list.

Otherwise, click Start->Control panel-> Folder Options, and select the 'File Types' tab. Then, just click the file extension you want to change, hit the 'Change' button, and then hit 'Select program from a list', and you should be able to change it.

Good luck!

I've been doing a lot of tidying up of my file types and associations, and one of the things that I have done is to ensure that all my most used file types have meaningful and accurate "friendly names". So, instead Explorer referring to .wv files as "WV File" it now says "WavPack Audio File". I've done this for numerous file types and it has all worked well and is correctly displayed in Explorer.

However, I also use Windows Libraries, and for some reason it is still using generic file descriptions, or older ones that I chose myself and subsequently updated.

I have done the usual things of clearing the icon cache and all other cache and temp storage. I've also completely rebuilt the index of the Library in question. I have even removed all folders from that library and deleted the top level library itself (then, after a reboot, recreated it by selecting 'Restore Default Libraries'), but as soon as I add my folder to the Library, the same old file names show up again.

I have done a thorough search of my Registry and some of the terms being displayed by the Library are nowhere to be found in the Registry (because I have updated every possible instance of the file type name) so it must be cached somewhere, unless its buried in some indecipherable format in the Registry that doesn't show up in search results.

If I click an incorrectly named 'file types' group in the Library, and then choose 'Open Folder Location' to look at the same files direct... Read more

This could have something to do with your user files. Are you the Administrator of this computer & do you only have one user account?.

Click on Computer & then click on your main OS drive which is normally C:\, then click Users, which should show your user name as one of the folders. Click on that & select your Documents files & see if the new names are listed there, if so you can create a New Library by clicking on Include in Library, from the menu at the top, & selecting Create New Library.

If all the Documents are correct as mentioned above you could copy all the Documents into the New library & then after checking everything is correct you can delete the old library.

If you have more that one user account, it's possible that all the changes are being made on one account & you are then trying to access them on another account, so you keep getting the old arrangement.

For the most part, I do not mind Explorer's autodetecting the folder type (Music, Videos, etc). However, one thing that I miss from Windows 7 is being able to set the "style" for a folder type... where I could choose to display certain columns and have Explorer display those columns for all folders of that category.

Does anyone know of a way to set the defaults for a folder category?

Hi all,

Built my new computer yesterday and installed Windows 7 64 bit, Enterprise.

I have noticed that the file type icons aren't showing in explorer, while little it is extremely annoying as when searching for an excel document for example I just look for the icon.
It seems to work for some icons and not others- as shown in the image below.

Is there any fix for this?

I need to change a zip file to an epub file. I have heard this can be done, but when I add the .epub after the file name, I notice the file is still actually zip type file when I right click properties. This is causing a problem when I try to open it in in different ebook reader programs.

I know there is a way to change a file's actual file type, but I don't know how. Perhaps there is a software or I need to go into the registry?

I can do this either with windows 7 or XP home, because I have two computers. So help on either operating system would be great?

As a related question, I am wondering does changing a file's icon type actually change the file type or just the icon?

A:How do I change a file's file type (not only file association)?

Hi awd and welcome to Seven Forums.

I take it that your zip file is an e-book. Changing the extension does nothing to change the format of the data. If you have need to convert an e-book from one format to another try Calibre. In addition to managing e-books it allows you to convert from one form to another. calibre - E-book management

I have an xls file that I frequent a lot and was hoping I could pin it to the explorer icon on my taskbar. I know I can pin it to the taskbar under the excel icon but I don't need an excel icon on my taskbar to clutter it up. Is there any way to pin it to the explorer icon instead?

A:Any way to pin an .xls file to explorer icon on taskbar

Pinning to the taskbar is for applications, not files. That is the dealio.

I'm looking for the way to get the 'edit' icon to work again on the ribbon of File Explorer (on the Home tab).
Before I got my new computer, I was able to highlight an html file and then click on the Edit button and SharePoint Designer would open.
However, I can't get it to work now and I don't know why.
I have:
1) Gone to Internet Options > Programs
It's set for SharePoint Designer to be the default editor
2) Gone into SharePoint Designer > Tools > Application Options
It's set to be the default editor
3) Gone to Settings > Default Apps > Choose default apps by file type
But I don't want SPD to be the default to open it, just edit it.
4) Gone to Settings > Default Apps > Choose default app by protocol
Again, I don't want SPD to be the default to open it, just edit it
5) Gone to Settings > Default Apps > Set defaults by app
SPD is not listed in there and if I look at the IE (I don't use Edge), it's set for default for opening everything and not option in there for changing the app for editing an html file

I'm stumped. Where else IS there to go so the Edit icon will be usable and open SPD?
