Vertical white line down the display

Q: Vertical white line down the display

Hi guys, this is my first post on one of these forums. I have 2 vertical white lines that go all the way down the display on the laptop. Had the laptop just over 12 months therefore is out of warranty. How can I fix this issue? Will HP be able to replace or repair this? Also is there an email address to contact HP customer support as I couldnt find one on the website. Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Vertical white line down the display

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

On my Dell Studio 1749 a vertical white line has appeared about 3 inches in from the left hand side.  It started off about 1mm wide but is gradually increasing in width and is now about 4mm wide.  There is no problem on an external monitor when connected.
Is this likely to be a fault with the panel or a chip problem?
Thank you.

A:Vertical white line appeared on display.

Hi  Ian,
This could be an issue with the LCD. To isolate the issue follow below steps:

Check if the vertical lines appear in BIOS screen (Restart the computer and tap F2 on Dell logo).
Also restart the computer and check the display in Safe mode (Restart the computer and press F8 on Dell logo and select Safe mode)
Run the diagnostics on the computer (Restart the computer by holding the” D” and power button and wait till the LCD test completes) and let me know the test result for LCD.

Awaiting your response!

Hey all. I have a 5 yr. old HP Pavilion dv6t 3200 CTO Laptop. I have had a 1/4 " white vertical line on the right side on my display for awhile now. It is there all the time, even in safe mode, even when I run computer error scan.( Black Screen with white line still) The pointer will disappear under the white line when trying to scroll making this difficult. I have used HDMI cable to my TV and the display on it shows no white line. I then assume that it is either the screen or the display cable. I would have to open it up either way, but was wondering if there is a way to figure out which is the culprit ? Or just go for a new screen, just do not want to open it and replace screen to find out cable is bad. Any ideas ? Thanks

A:Vertical white line right side of Hp dv6t 3200 laptop display

I believe the HP Pavilion dv6t 3200 has integrated graphics, meaning the graphics are soldered to the motherboard.
It is possible that it is the screen, but personally i think it could be the graphics chip. You mentioned that when you connect to an external display the "white line" is no longer visible.

You refer to the cable possibly being the problem are you referring to the HDMI cable or the cable that connects the screen to the motherboard?

If you are talking about the cable that connects the screen to the motherboard, the cable is soldered to the screen therefore if it is the cable a new screen will be needed. Can you take a picture of the line you are seeing please as this will help me diagnose the problem.

I was hoping someone could help me, I litterally just took my brand new HP All in One 21-3140 out of the box and the display as it was first starting up looked great and then it performed an update and now on the right hand side of my screen I have a white dotted line going down it. I have tried rebooting my computer and pulling the power cord out along with the connections for the wireless keyboard and mouse and cannot seem to get rid of it. Hello HP Support,  I need your help! I have an HP Pavilion 15 Notebook - n068el (energy star), Product number: F6R97EA#ABZ, running on Windows 8.1 64-bit.System: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4200U CPU @ 1.60 GHz 2.30 GHz, RAM: 4 GB.Processor Graphics in use: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4400, GOP version: 5.0.1035. Since yesterday, after some updates probably, but I don't know which ones, a white vertical line has appeared on the right-hand side of the screen, and it doesn't go away.  I cannot watch films or videos, do any work without this line disturbing the screen, it is really annoying and unpleasant.  Everything else is normal and running properly I think.  I have tried to solve it by downloading updated versions of the graphics processor, but when I go to your website, for my laptop there are three downloads recommended for the graphics processor: Driver per scheda grafica Intel ad alta definizione (HD) 2013-11-25 , Versione10.18.10.3325, 158.03M orDriver scheda grafica NVIDIA 2013-11-25 , Versione1.10, 340.7M orDriver per scheda grafica AMD ad alta definizione (HD)2013-11-15 , Versione13.151.0.0, 277.22M I don't know which one I have to download, so I have not downloaded any, and in any case I don't know whether that would solve my problem. Can you please help me?   Many Thanks in advance.Patrizia

A:Vertical white line on the laptop screen

Hey Patrizia,Welcome to the HP Forums! The first steps that you should attempt is to make sure that the vertical white lines do not appear in the BIOS. To do this I have included the steps below.1. Turn off your computer2. Make sure you have connected the power cable3. Turn on your notebook, as it is starting press the  F10 button repeatedlyOnce you are in the BIOS, if the lines are still present, it is likely a hardware failure. The next two steps may resolve the issue. The first one is to do a hard reset. I have included the document 'Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset'. The next and final step is to perform a BIOS update. I have included the information here for you 'Updating the BIOS'.Let me know if the issue does not appear in the BIOS.Hope this helps!

I have a Dell Inspiron 3537 model. It has been giving me a problem on and off. There is white vertical line which comes right in the middle of the screen. I used to press a little lightly on the screen and it used to disappear. But since morning it has been constantly there and troubling me a lot.
Request help asap and thanks a ton in advance.

The only way to permanently solve the problem is to replace the LCD -- if the system is under warranty, contact Dell and they'll do that for you. If it's not, the screen you depends upon whether it's a standard LCD (about $50-100) or a touchscreen (requires the complete assembly;  about $200).

Hello Guys,

I'm new here so pleae go east on me. Its my first post. I noticed yesterday that there is a very fine thin line on the left side of my desktop. In the screen shot you can barely make it out, but you will be able to once you see ot from the left corner of task bar. it does not appear when i open a browser or a folder or even start menu. It only shows on the desktop screen and is really annoying. I tried disabling some odd services and restarted the computer as well, but still no luck. A little help will be appreciated.

P.S: Screen shot is below.

A:Thin White Vertical Line on the left side of desktop

Hi there
If you are using an external TV type of monitor go into the menu of the Monitor -- usually via a remote controller etc. Somewhere in the Video / picture setups you should see an option like auto adjust picture / size or something like that -- then the image should fit the screen perfectly.

(Assuming of course that you have set the resolution (in the PC settings) of the monitor to one it can handle).

Everytime I print a photo that nearly covers the entire page, a white-ish/grey-ish line is present. The line is blurry and not even. I have tried all the service features on the printer's LCD menu like cleaning, calibrate, print test pages etc but nothing has helped.
I am not sure, but I think this problem started after I printed some self-adhesive labels that apparently were meant for inkjet printers and not laser (I did not have the paper's retail packaging, so I did not know). I thought maybe somehow one of the toners got damaged. The store I purchased it will cover hardware issues as the printer is still under warranty, but they say if it turns out it was one of the toners that was the problem and not the printer itself, I will be charged a fee. I have exchanged the black toner and that did nothing. I can't really afford to replace all the color toners right now just to see if this is a toner issue or not.
I am inserting an image at the end of this, which is a scanned printout where the line is fully visible. The print looks worse after I scanned it for some reason, it does not look that bad in reality (it's really darker!), but you get the idea.
Let me know if you have any ideas of what the problem might be and how to fix it. Thanks!

I recently bought a new HannS.G 22Inch widescreen TFT monitor and it displays a 1 pixel width vertical line of varying colours from top to bottom, which overprints the entire display, however it only shows up in the operating system, i.e.not in the bios at startup. The line is on the right hand side and does disappear and reappear randomly, but not with a restart. I have used it on two computers with the same effect.

Any ideas would be much appreciated

A:Vertical Line on Monitor display?

Well the first thing is that since it's new it's under warranty so you'll probably be sending or taking it back. Since it shows the same problem on two machines I'd bet on it.

The only other thing I can suggest is to make sure you're running it in it's native resolution and refresh rate.

Since that event there is a permanent vertical red line on the display, exactly at the center. Is it a problem that could be solved by installing a new inverter ? Good morning, after two months of purchase of my HP All-in-one 24 - g013nl appeared a vertical red line on the screen. Sent to support the PC with pictures related to the problem, in Hungary, I live in Italy. The PC support sends me back the same as before always with the red line on the screen. Call the call center (in Serbia) and tell me that the assistance did not see the problem, after which instead are the signs of opening of the body and the red line, and more nuanced but this, probably have tried to delete it without success. I ask if they can replace it, if they are unable to repair it, but the procedure does not have it.What is the problem ?Because after two months appears a red line on the screen? What are the causes? Why not fix it?Thank you

Hi guys, since yesterday I have one vertical line on my screen. I am sure it is hardware problem. I red some topics in the web about similar problems and decided to take off the bottom aluminum part of the case and to make sure  the display cable is on its place and is not lose. Everything looks OK. After that procedure the problem still exists.
So my question is : is there way to repair it without need to change of the whole screen assembly ? Can I change only the LED display cable, as I found some spare of them on Ebay ?
Does anyone of you experienced such a fault in this model display ?

Hello. This laptop is almost a year old (still under warranty). It was in HP service center and their conclusion is that everything is OK with laptop because they could not reproduce error with their HDD and their OS (that is what they actually said). Problem is with display. From time to time (not always) thin white line is shown on top of blue or gradiant blue or similar color (I'm attaching links to photos because they are too large to upload - if you look closely at photos, you will notice it on blue color): Photo 1Photo 2 Now, I picked up laptop from service last week and my warranty is valid for 2 more weeks or something like that. Any suggestions what to do? It seems that HP Service Center (MR Servis d.o.o., Zagreb, Croatia, Europe) doesn't care or they are not capable to properly test laptop. I paid for laptop almost 1.000,00? and month or two after warranty goes out I will have broken laptop? Thanx in advance,Stanislav Vlasic

For no apparent reason a band of white that fades at the edges now appears down the centre of my display. It comes and goes when I log on/off, I'm sure the display is fine as it's brand new. I was just wondering if anyone has experienced a virus or worm that would cause this.
The display is a 19" HANNS-G using a DVI cable to connect. I'm new to this so I'm hoping I've posted OK.

A:White Line Down Display

Hi mickbenn,

Try a new driver(s). Look for new drivers for your video card and display and try that first.
Try reseating the video card and reconnect all cables.

One word about something being new... it doesn't mean it cannot fail. In my experiences, parts fail very early - dead out of box/dead in a month - or the fail after being in service for a while. (Of course there is the occasional lightning kill ) If you can try your display on another computer, or try another display on your computer, that will help rule out parts.

I hope this helps...

The computer is a Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop Computer running Windows Vista.
Last night a small white line randomly appeared underneath the taskbar, bumping it up a millimeter and then it grew and covered the whole taskbar and parts above it as shown in the pictures (attatched).
This white line shakes a bit and reflects the actions of the mouse (Pic 2).

I restarted the computer to see if it would fix it but instead, i got a BSoD when the computer turned back on.

Can you please tell me the resolutions to this and if you need any further info ill post it.

A:Blurry/White horizontal line on display

If possible go ahead and send a crash dump over. Though honestly that looks like the backlight on the monitor has gone crazy, or perhaps a video problem, so the bsod may be unrelated. Still doesn't hurt to try.

At least from the pictures that looks like it's a physical light being emitted from the back (kinda like the monitor went bonkers there on the bottom) and less of a software predicament. Again though, best to test out software possibilities before considering it hardware.

Ever since I got this notebook, all I've had are problems, and HP has never been able to resolve a single problem. It's like the warranty is completely meaningless. They didn't even replace defective parts, let alone replace the entire notebook.I've had problems with the hard disk, and was told we can't solve this problem as this is a problem with every envy notebook.I've had a problem where dust is building up inside the screen (between the screen and the external glass cover), and I was told I need to send the notebook to the service centre (even though I have an "on-site, at home service warranty? for 3 effing years). This one time, one HP tech even told me "ENVY NOTEBOOKS DON'T SUPPORT VLC PLAYER, YOU MUST PLAY MULTIMEDIA USING WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER ALONE". NOW, I have a white line appearing on the top corner of the screen, and HP said I need to take a picture of the problem in the BIOS. The BIOS itself has a white background. How can I click a picture of a white line on a white background? If I write with white ink on a white paper, can anyone read it? I explained this precisely, and was told "Since the issue is not present in BIOS, we need to check if this can be covered in the warranty". WELL, THE ISSUE IS PRESENT IN THE BIOS, IT?S JUST THAT IT CANNOT BE SEEN AS IT?S WHITE ON WHITE, AND YOU WANT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS AND NOT REPLACE MY LCD? The issue is present in live linux USB sticks as well! All you need to reproduce it is a DARK BACKGROUND. ... Read more

I bought a 15 inch NEC lcd about a month ago and have been using it without any problems. Just this morning a red vertical line appeared about 7/8ths of an inch from the left. I have the latest driver with windows xp. The line doesn't seem to actually be on the desktop and it overlaps everything. I've also tried resetting the monitor configurations. Does anyone have any idea of how to get rid of the red line?

A:NEC LCD...red vertical line

IT seems that Part of your LCD monitor is not functioning Correctly. Under Normal Circumstances your monitor maybe do a POST ( power on self Test ) and the line is Initated that way. You may want to try Booting into Safe Mode and DOS prompt to see if the line goes away. If its does Its mostlikely a driver issue. If not then its the monitor and you should return it. Also try hooking up another monitor to it just to see if you have the same prob. JFYI you have Display adapters and Monitor Drivers make sure you have both up to date.

I'm not sure exactly what that is. Do you mean there's a line there when its turned on only, or is it always there, even when shut off?

If its there when it's shut off then it sounds like a pressure crack on the screen to me. Hopefully its not that. I had a nasty on one my Sidekick 2 once. x.x

But even if it is, if its a not interfering with the picture try to disregard it. That's all I can say.

Alright, I have a Toshiba notebook and the other day a vertical, thin, purple line appeared on the the right hand side of my display. I didn't drop my notebook or damage it in any way, no over clocking of any sort ether. It doesn't show on screen shot and when hooked up to an external monitor it works like a charm. I would like to know if the problem is fixable because my warranty is void. I am surprised this has happened because the laptop is only about a year and a half old. Thank you for your assistance.

A:Vertical Purple Line

That Purple Line is a dead or stuck pixel it could have been your Graphics Card but since it worked alright in a External Monitor it indicates the LCD Screen is faulty, this means you need to replace the LCD Screen. I'm not quite sure how to take them off or fix them back on but someone on here maybe able to help a bit better with that.

You could try looking on Ebay for your Toshiba Laptop Model, they sell laptops that may have 1 part not working (they will indicate what is not working) but will be a cheap option for your LCD Screen as well as other spare parts for your laptop compared to buying the Screen on its own here is an example - http://www.priorityelectronics.com/laptop-lcd-screens/toshiba-lcdscreens.html

Attach an external monitor.  If you don't see the same fault there, the wiring harness or display panel needs to be replaced.
If you do see it on the external screen, the GPU is the problem - replace the mainboard.

If there is a warranty or Guarantee in place for the item then dont try to fix it, you can void any warranty, take it back again and again until you get a working system or until you get your money back.

I thought my problem was some kind of virus so I posted it in the Security forum. But responses there (or lack of them) lead me to believe that it's something else. Here's the problem:

I've suddenly got little grids of vertical lines surrounding the cursor, covering the icons in the system tray, covering the icons in the browser toolbars, covering the start button, covering the icons on the desktop and in various other places. Strangely, they don't cover the icons for Microsoft Word or Outlook in the Start Menu, but they do cover the rest of the icons in the Start Menu. They even appear when the computer is booting up, covering the entire large eMachines logo and covering the entire Windows XP startup page. The "grid" of lines around the cursor consists of groups of 5 vertical lines, each about a millimeter high. There are 5 rows and 3 columns of these groups of 5 lines each. The whole thing is about a square centimeter. The grids around the various icons are similar. When I'm editing text, the grid around the cursor is replaced by a single vertical bar just to the right of the cursor, about a millimeter wide by a centimeter tall.

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition on a new eMachines M6809 laptop with an ATI radeon 9600 video card. I tried reinstalling the display adapter driver, but it didn't help.

I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions that anyone might have.

Note: Symptom is similar to one described in earlier note by SJackman.
There are small vertical line grids around desktop icons and the cursor on my display. Also, video shown on Microsoft Media player shows larger (longer and thicker) vertical lines over the images. (The video otherwise plays normally.) The lines do not appear on my desktop background or around the little icons on the Windows taskbar. As I type this note, I can see small vertical grids below my cursor pointer, but not elsewhere on the screen. Other than the vertical lines, my PC's functions seem normal.
Only recent install that I recall, other than Microsoft upgrades, is a Flash uninstall/install. I have Windows XP and a Dell 8300 PC.
I would welcome any suggestions.

I've got a yellow vertical line down the middle of my laptop screen. From what I've read and the troubleshooting I've undertaken, the screen is failing and the problem is only going to get worse. I bought the computer in December 2014; it is less than a year and a half old. I am retired and use the computer a few times a week, never more than one hour at a time. I've never dropped the computer or abused it in any way and the computer has never been taken out of my house. I am appalled that a company like HP would produce such an inferior product. Are their products so crappy that an extended warranty should no longer be considered an option but a necesssity? There is no reason for this problem other than HP cares nothing about the products it makes. I want to contact an officer of the company and have found that this is impossibile to do. As a senior citizen on a fixed income, I cannot afford to have the computer fixed. Now what do I do?
