Slow and nonresponsive file explorer in Windows 7

Q: Slow and nonresponsive file explorer in Windows 7

Within the past few weeks, file explorer has been running much more slowly than usual. When I try to select files to copy or move, file explorer will not respond for 30 seconds or more; then suddenly, it will cease the inactivity and respond. Sometimes I'm
notified that it's not responding, but usually I simply have to wait.
What's going on?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have noticed lately that my computer seems to take an excessively long time to boot up completely - almost 5 minutes. Also when clicking on desktop icons, they seem to also take much longer to load. Windows Explorer (the folder and file management tool, not to be confused with the browser Internet Explorer) is agonizingly slow to rename and open folders and files, sometimes taking close to 2 minutes just to open a 56 KB file. I have done all the usual things like running a virus and spyware scans (I have AdAware, Spybot, Malwarebytes and ATFCleaner, CCleaner as well as my ISP's Computer Associates Antivirus, Firewall and Spyware protection installed), emptying temp files and recycle bin and defraging the hard drive and I've unchecked "Automatically search for Network folders and printers". I also did a chkdsk scan and a system restore to before when the problem started. Nothing seems to help the slow response, especially when working with folders and files through Windows Explorer. I have not downloaded or installed any programs recently (only AdAware, Spybot and CA updates), but I did have a new power supply and a new cable modem installed recently. Even the tech that installed the new power supply said he was concerned at how long it took for my computer to boot up, however he only repairs hardware and could offer no suggestions as to what the problem is. If it's any help in diagnosing my problem, my system is an HP Pavilion 750n with a 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 proce... Read more

Hi,
Everytime I boot up the computer, I get the windows security red shield on the taskbar telling me that the status of my Zonealarm firewall is unknown, yet Zonealarm itself shows that all systems are working fine.

My next problem is that sometimes my computer becomes locked up and nonresponsive while I am on the internet. When I go to the start menu and click on restart or shutdown, nothing happens. I then have to manually turn off the computer. This has been happening far too often. After thorough scanning with Spybot, AVG antivirus, and Superantispyware, Superantispyware found some adware and other things which were then quarantined. I am still having the same problems however.

Below are my hijackthis log and superantispyware log.

Ok I realize this will take time and I hope you can get to the bottom of it. Been living with the redirected websearches (too long) now even if I'm not "online", specifically upon start-up, it is taking my system FOREVER to get going! Sometimes it just stalls all together. I've worn out the task manager ending task, LOL!

To be honest with you, it seems like ever since I had to "upgrade" to Windows 7 it seems to act like it's running TWO operating systems at once and when I look at the items listed in Processes of the Task Manager there are MULTIPLE listings of the same things. At one time, years ago, I had been told that you can stop some of those "Processes" to help your computer run faster...

Recently I bought an external hard drive to backup the data on my laptop. I don't know if it has anything to do with the issue I'm having or just a coincidence.

After installing the HDD, Vista started running really slow. Now it's gotten to the point where after opening any type of window, to included web browser or document file, the window will become completely unresponsive and I have to wait up to 10 mins. to restart. While I am posting this I just received a message that "Host Processes for Windows has stopped working and has shut down". I don't know what that means. Is this something serious or an easy fix? I will run a disk check and post the results. But any help will be greatly appreciated.

External HDD is a WD My Passport. Laptop is a Toshiba Satallite running Windows Vista.

~SFC /SCANNOW............didn't find anything wrong

What gives? It worked fine for Vista it even worked fine after inst 7 it just sorta went away but is still there.

There are no amswers out there. I have read every single post* and all of them either fall off, are blamed on a device failure, or are blamed on Malware.

Any help is appreciated.

For some days I think my file explorer has some problem.
For example: If I click on a .docx in Total Commander, it loads promptly, but when I want to use "save as" in the Word, it waits for 30 seconds before pops up the browse window.
Config: Win8.1 updated, Intel i5-4200M laptop with 240 GB Samsung SSD & 1000 GB Toshiba(?) SSHD
Usually this config is very fast, only some file operations are extremely slow.

After upgrading to Windows 10 from 8.1 on my desktop, three problems were evident:

1. File Explorer took over an hour to load - 'working on it' message displayed as the green progress bar slowly moved from left to right.

2. If I were to right click on a file or folder and select 'properties' all desktop icon pictures would go blank leaving empty boxes which after 15 minutes restored to normal.

3. If I were to right click on a file or folder and select 'properties' in addition to icon pictures disappearing, it would take most an hour for the properties window to come up.

All other aspects of my normal everyday usage seemed normal. Office worked, browser worked, two displays with stock charts running worked, TV program recording via QAM tuners worked fine as well.

I finally discovered from a posting on Windows TenForums that Windows Search was apparently the problem. Once disabled via msconfig / services /Windows search all my problems went away. Makes no sense to me but thought I would post this to perhaps save others some wasted time and grief should they have these unusual symptoms. Actually I have Win 10 installed on two other machines (laptops) with Windows Search active and no problems whatsoever.

when I open certain folders (even on my own 840 EVO SSD) explorer takes too long to show me the files.. like it has to build them again or something..

there is 106 files in this particular folder.. why doesn't it show up near instant.. it took atleast 4 seconds or more to show this folder..

i may have changed a settings i shouldn't have while tweaking my system..

Win 81. 64 16Gb RAM

When an application lets me browse a folder to find a file, the window it opens always displays files in name order even though the sort by date column is set in Explorer. Eventually (ofter after two minutes!) the display rearranges itself into date order. Related is this:

Just using Windows and changing drives in Explorer there is a considerable lag either before the folder opens, or the folder opens empty and a progress bar c r a w l s along the address bar.

I have five hard drives and many folders have have sub folders with many files in each. So I know there are a lot of files to manage. But it seems as if Windows isn't prefetching or caching or something and is starting from scratch every time. Once windows has opened a folder, surely it should remember, even after a power-off?

A:slow loading of explorer file lists

Are you trying to access network shares? If it is an issue of just the computer itself. The question is, how many files & folders are in those folders you are trying to access.

Ok so since upgrading from 7 to 10 file explorer has been a absolute nightmare! Everything was either incredibly slow, didn't happen or only partially load. After enduring this to this day I have decided enough is enough and started diagnosing by limiting the startup services using MSconfig.

After going through enabling startup services groups at the time and restarting the computer everytime! Eventually I found the service that was causing the problems with file explorer. The service is called Windows search and once disabled it restored functionality to file explorer. The search function in file explorer works but the search in the taskbar doesn't.

Step by step guide:
1. Hold Win+r to open run
2. Type msconfig and hit ok or enter
3. Click Services
4. Navigate to Windows search (you can sort the list in descending alphabetical order)
5. Uncheck tickbox
6. Click apply then ok
7. Select to restart now

Hope this works for you.

Recently a change occured (after an update?).
I have a folder containing only 6 shortcuts, linking to devices or to drives, connected to devices, in my home network. Opening this folder takes about 30 sec. It has to do with those shortcuts that link to drives, connected to devices, which are off. Apparently, file explorer, when trying to present the shortcuts, also tries to get some info from those drives. After failing, file explorer nevertheless decides to present the shortcut after long waiting time.
This effect has come recently in W10. In most cases, the effect is there, but in a few cases, the map is opening normally.

A:File explorer slow in opening folder with shortcuts

Additional info:
When the folder is closed for a longer period, then opening gives an instantaneous result.
After closing the folder, and opening again some time after closing, the shortcuts only show up after ca 30 sec.

And why only on the second drive?

I've tried the recommended explorer settings:
1. Optimize this folder for "General Items" ... and "Also apply this template to all subfolders".
2. Tolls --> Folder options... --> View ..........

And no joy.

I'm about to tear out my hair. First Windows Explorer keeps stopping, searches for solution then restarts. About the time this problem, I noticed that Windows Explorer will change the original creation date on some of my files. It might be all files in folder or just certain types. I've yet to make a connection with when this is happening or what is causing it. Not necessarily when Windows Explorer stops. It's difficult when you can't tell which is the oldest/newest file in a folder.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, which I keep updated, McAfee, AntiMalware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware, also all updated.

I'm begging! Can someone help me please?

I've had some annoyance for quite some time when trying to work with folder and files through Local Disk Explorer or My Computer. Folder contents take much longer to display than they used to. If I click on a folder in the left side of the window, the contents of the folder (files) flash briefly, then disappear. In a few seconds they slowly reappear, one by one. Files are also slow to open. For example, an OTF Font file may take 15 to twenty seconds to open in FontView (it used to be almost instantaneous). Drag and drop also seems delayed. I've hunted the Internet for help and tried many tweaking advice suggestions, but nothing seems to help. I'd like to know what the problem might be and if there are possinbly any fixes.

My System - HP Pavillion 750n, 1.6 GHZ Pentium4 processor, 768 MB SDRAM, 32 MB graphics card and Windows XP home ed. as an OS. I bought it used and did not get any disks with it, so I can't re-install any system thingies if something gets messed up. I run Computer Associates Spyware and Antivirus scans regularly. Update and immunize with Spybot about once a week and do a scan once a month on average (it takes almost 2 hours to scan with SpyBot). I've given up on getting MalwareBytes to update and I've also uninstalled AdAware months ago which REALLY bogged down my system. I also have the CA firewall. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

When I click a Word 2007 document in Windows Explorer, I get the message "Windows cannot open the file (path\name) make sure...etc." Word opens but file does not. With Word open, clicking brings up another instance of Word (without file) and same error. Same as other posts on this issue. Issue does not occur with any other files (Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Acrobat, etc.) Happens with only Word extensions (docx, etc.) If I open Word and open the file from inside Word, all is fine.

I tried saving documents in different Word extensions, saving to different locations, but still get the error--only when opening directly from Explorer or Desktop. I have repaired Office 2007 (Ultimate Version), uninstalled Word, reinstalled Word; tried the registry fix posted here and MS site (removing Data reg entry under Word). Used tool posted here to unassociate/reassociate .docs with Word. I reimaged my hard drive using an image from two weeks ago, but apparently it started before that, because I still get the same error. I reset my index and waited for it to regenerate. I'm sure there might be other solutions I've tried, but these are the ones that come to mind.

It is a three-week-old Dell 1545 laptop, 64-bit Vista. Not impossible to live with, but has me stumped. According to all the posts in networld and here, fairly common problem that seems to have no single solution.

If anyone knows of new tips, I'd sure appreciate it.

A:Windows cannot find file path\file name when opening from Windows Explorer

Error is "cannot find (path\name)...before someone yells. Also, thorough scan for malicious software, trojans, etc. Do not have BSPlayer, whatever that is. Also, if I search for the document in the menu, I can't open it from there either.

Hi there

If you have Loads (and I mean Loads) of small files - e-books, excel data. word docs, emails etc etc then File explorer runs REALLY slow on even fast devices

I gave up moving this lot after about 4 hours. (W10 machine).

Switched to Linux system -- did it in 45 mins similar hardware to W10 machine - both Real machines --not VM's and direct transfer (not via LAN).

What gives !!!!!

I know it's only a 1 time move but similar hardware with identical HDD should not have a HUGE difference in the move --note in fact Linux actually has hard a harder job since the file system was NTFS which isn't a native Linux file system either. Source system external HDD on USB 3 device,, target systm larger HDD device on USB3 device -- no hubs - USB 3 transfer working OK on both W10 and Linux so reasonable comparison.

IMO the NTFS file system has serious problems if you start messing around with this type of data. !!!! Perhaps Ms need to look at a better file system for Mass storage devices. 5 and 6 TB HDD's are quite common now even for consumer sector and not expensive either.

I know this is an exceptional job but it does show that something in File explorer isn't very efficient once you start manipulating large volumes of data - especially in small files. (Approx 290 TB of data consisting of 128,000 files in 55,000 odd directories)

I'm usually quite happy with Windows - but there is definitely a problem here. Fortunately it was a 1 off job though !!!!.... Read more

Hello Everyone.

I use Windows 8.1.

Until few days ago, everything was working fine. No idea what happened but whenever I open the File Explorer/Windows Explorer, it always opens minimized. Earlier I just needed to maximize it and close it so that when the next time I open it, it opens maximized. But when I do that now, it still opens minimized.

Not just that. I like to have my files and folders view to be as "large icons". But, its all in "details" view now. Earlier if something like this happened, I would change it once to "large icons" and it remained intact upon my viewing next time. However, it doesn't happen now. Inspite of changing the view settings to "large icons", they still open "details" view.

Any idea, how to solve both the issues? It would be very helpful.

Thanks.

Most icons can be right-clicked, choose Properties and on the Shortcut tab click Run and change from Normal Window to Minimized or to Maximized. Yours may be set for Minimized.

Hi all,

I have been hammered by several viruses. The result of the attack is that Windows Explorer now shows the file type for an exe file to be a file folder instead of an application. I assume there is something not right in the registry but I do not know where to start looking. Can anyone help? Thanks very much.

I'm not sure this is what you are talking about, but you can change the icon:
Tools -> Folder options -> File types
Mark the file and press "advanced".

Hi All
I have a rather large file system with lots of folders & subfolders. When I want to save previously on Xp operating system I'd search in explorer open the folder I want then copy the address (e.g c:\customer records\client name\job address).
In windows 7, when I copy the folder address i get this "search-ms:displayname=Search%20Results%20in%20electronic%20files&crumb=location:S%3A%5CSEQ%5C011_Estimating %5Celectronic%20files\CHERMSIDE , 17 smith ST"

As you can imagine I cant paste that into a save as field and expect it find the folder location.

Does someone know if it can do what I want? keeping in mind this is about time saving and productivity exercise so I need a simple solution. It is also on a work computer so a lot of settings are locked.

Appreciate any help

Contradictory file dates in Windows 7 File Explorer when I use "Search My Documents" with *.docx

I modified a Word file earlier today. When I view the file in File Explorer the correct file date/time is displayed, however when I search for Word files by entering *.docx in the "Search My Documents" box (in upper right hand side of the File Explorer window) all Word files are displayed but this file shows a very different and contradictory date/time. The date/time in this case happens to be is 5 days earlier ? a date/time consistent with when I worked on it last week ? instead of when I modified it today. And yes, there is no question about this being the same file.

This is not just a one time occurrence or a one folder situation. In File Explorer for other files in other folders this same contradictory dating situation occurs. Namely; a file with the latest modified date/time shows the wrong date/time when it is searched for using the "Search My Documents" feature in File Explorer. I cannot say whether this situation is restricted only to Word files, but that is only where I have always encountered it because I work with Word files a lot.

This has detrimentally affected me because one time I thought I had totally lost an important file and beganworking again with an older and obsolete version of the file and had to redo a lot of work.

What is the cause of this? Is this a known bug?

A:Contradictory file dates in Windows 7 File Explorer when I use search

The Windows Index needs to be rebuilt. Better yet, if you have a fast computer you can turn indexing off so you don't get bitten by this "service". You can also use a different search program such as Ultra File Search.

To rebuild the index, open:
Control Panel > All Control Panel Items
Click on Indexing Options
Click the Advanced button
Click the Rebuild button

I also checked my Task Manager for pointing out memory eating processes but found none. My CPU Usage was dribbling around 0% to 3%. But PFUsage was near 788MB. Then I started searching for virus. While starting the computer for another day of chasing an unrelated problem I see the following screen :

" Windows Resume Loader

The last attempt to resume the system from its previous location failed. Attempt
to resume again ?
(Use arrow keys to highlight your choice.)

Continue with system resume
Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu
ENTER=Choose "
The second problem - aside from the sudden appearance of the "Loader" screen itself - is that the computer is totally unresponsive to any input. All connections appear to be tight and neither keyboard, mouse nor restart make any change at all.

The machine is a Dell Optiplex GX620 desktop running Win7(32 bit), IE9 and Norton Internet Security.

I have exhausted my meager troubleshooting abilities and am hoping someone can provide some guidance.

If this is posted in the wrong forum please feel free to move it.

Thanks in advance for your time.

I cannot do anything. This problem has been going on for a couple of days now.
Yesterday, I loaded a DSL live cd, deleted some odd files, ran XP, and it worked like a charm, and I was able to use it for hours.
Today, XP is back to being extremely slow (the cursor moves almost 90 seconds after the mouse is moved).
I ran the checkdisk utility at startup (I had no choice) and it complained about several prefetch .pf files, then proceeded to run just as slow.

What should I do? I ran DSL again in an attempt to do away with the .pf files for good, but couldn't, because the files were read-only and couldn't be chmodded otherwise. XP is running to slow to run any scans or download any protection or do ANYTHING. Please help me, else I use this old mac (what I'm using for this forum) eternally...

Hi, i am new at this, so bear with me lol

We have just moved our XP computer into the living room, and connected it to a 58kb dial-up connection. We installed AVG 8 and everything was running fine

Now we've installed Windows Live OneCare Family safety on the machine so we can monitor my borther and sisters internet usage.

Now, the computer runs extremely slowely, Windows Explorer continually crashes, meaning we have great difficulty opening My Documents, and My Computer or anything that requires Explorer to open

As well as this, now the internet is majorly slow... even for bloomin dial-up, we used to get at least 9kbps, but now its shot down to between 2.5 and 1.5 kbps

AVG is now continuously scanning... even outside of scheduled scans, and constantly wants to update :S

And finally, i have now noticed that small files i dont use very frequently have begun to dissapear from the system!!! music files, images, word docs etc.

We have tried defragging it, scandisk, using AdAware SE Personal 2005, AVG Scans, and they all come up with negligeable results.

As well as this, now the pc wont install files for Trend Micro Online scans to run... so we cant even work it out that way :S

I have a suspicion this could be something to do with OneCare, or Multiple Viruses in the system that have somehow hidden themselves from AVG

PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!

Hi guys,

I have a problem which I cannot understand. I have a pretty old, but reliable monitor Samsung SyncMaster 740. Today I opened my PC, and my monitor died right when windows showed the desktop. The thing is it's not really dead, but ... stuck. My monitor has a power light which is always on if the monitor is plugged in and working, and it will flick if it's only powered up but not working. I unplugged the monitor from the tower, but the light stays open as if it's working. The other buttons don't work(auto, menu, etc).
Do you think there is a way to "hard reset" it? I tried removing the power source and plugging it back in, but no luck.

Also, I want your opinion on sth if you're kind. A few months ago my HDD started smoking and died(no apparent damage, I think it's only the resistance); yesterday my HDD cooler broke, today the monitor. Do you think it's a coincidence or is something happening with my PC? Or maybe it's the electricity company's fault? Do you have any advice for me?

A:Monitor on but nonresponsive

I have a 19" Samsung that goes dark about 5 minutes after the computer boots up. Either a capacitor or a resister needs to be replaced. I don't trust my soldering skills and no one repairs monitors. They are considered throw away items. It is sitting in the basement waiting until I find someone who would be willing to do the soldering.
