Windows Media Player won't properly play Windows Media Audio/Video files

Q: Windows Media Player won't properly play Windows Media Audio/Video files

I'm at my wits end.

I put together a capable gaming pc about a month ago with a bunch of new components and some cannibalized older components.

I installed all of the drivers from the motherboard cd. I have a radeon x1300 vid card. I'm running windows xp home ed. I've installed about every codec and plugin under the sun. I've troubleshot my load with regard to Windows itself.

I cannot play Windows Media Audio/Video files for the life of me.

I do get audio, but the video is all hyper-colored like looking at scrambled porn.

It doesn't matter if I download the video or watch it in a browser (any browser). It doesn't matter if I open up the DLed video in real player, Windows Media player or Generic DIVX player #458973: it still comes out all scrambled and in crazy moon-man rainbow colors.

I have no problem playing any other type of windows media player file. Quicktime works fine as well.

Please help.

Preferred Solution: Windows Media Player won't properly play Windows Media Audio/Video files

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Windows Media Player won't properly play Windows Media Audio/Video files

Well standard Window's media files should play without the need for any additional codecs.

Maybe check the forums of your vid card for some answers.

I transferred some .mov files from my iphone to my laptop using Dropbox. In Dropbox, there is a green check meaning the file is completely transferred.  When I open Dropbox on my iphone, I can access the .mov files.  However, when I open Dropbox on my Windows 7 laptop, some .mov files work (everything in Sept) but some .mov files (everything from Oct 1 and on) only have audio but no video.  What is the issue?

A:.MOV video files won't play on windows media player

OK, I was told to install LAV filter and uninstall ffdshow.  That worked.  Maybe Apple used a difference video codec starting Oct. 1.  Anyways, that seemed to solve the problem.  However, the Oct mov files now only show icon.  I can't get it to show thumbmail like the Sept mov files.  Under "Tools" and "folder options" and "view" I unchecked "Always show icons, never thumbnails". But it only applied this to the Sept .mov files and not the Oct .mov files. The Oct .mov files still show an icon. How do I make them all show thumbnail?

Can anyone help me please? I'm using Windows Media Player ver.10 with XP Pro. Is there any way I can get it to play Real Audio Files with .ra and .rm extensions. I have uninstalled Real Player and now cannot play some 300 music files. Alternatively does anyone know of a player, other than Real Player, that will play them?
My thanks in advance.

Hey there.

So I'm having a problem playing .wmv files on my system (it's not just WMP). Everytime I play a file with a .wmv extension, the file will play, with proper audio and everything, but the colour will be messed up, almost as if the player (could be WMP, Realplayer, Quicktime etc...) is playing in negative mode. I can't fix it even with codecs. I've downloaded numerous codec packs, codecs from Microsoft, third parties, everywhere, and I can't seem to fix it. This only happens with wmv files, mpg, avi, mpeg etc...all play perfectly.

Running XP Pro

Thanks in advance

Hello all, I tried to reply to the thread with a similar title to provide a correct answer. So I am reintroducing the topic and providing an answer that seems to work.

Problem: I want to use media player with very minimal frame. Many answers are "play full screen". But I know that media can be played in windows media without any skin, very minimal framing and floating media controls over the video that auto hide when you move away.

Press Ctrl-2. This puts you in a skin mode. There should be menu items at the top: File, View, Play, Tools, Help
Choose View->Skin Chooser
You are now in the full media player experience. Do not choose a skin. Click the 3 square & arrow thing at the bottom "Switch to now playing"
Viola! No skin, minimal borders and floating media controls.

I have no idea why this is not a simple option. I think what I am choosing is the most basic skin, maybe not even intended for use. But this is my favorite player, super simple.

I have been burning discs for a while and have recently started using Memorex CD-R discs. Today I tried to burn a disc and for the third time in windows media player, it has completed but when I try to play it in a cd player or in the car - it does nothing and only shows one track. No errors occur when I burn it and there is plenty of room left on the disc. However, the process occurs quite quickly so maybe this is part of the problem. I really don't know.

Can anyone help me solve the problem?
I would really appreciate any help received.
Thanks in advance

Hi guys,

First off, I'm not a computor wizard by any stretch of the imagination, but once I've got through the computor jargon I can do most things, lol

Right, my problem involves Windows Media Player. For some reason it has just stopped working. It still plays music, and still plays visualizations, but I can't get actual video's to play. I've tried updating to Version 11, I've tried going to 'Set Program Access And Defaults' and setting WMP to my default media player. I'm kind of at a loss at what to do to sort it out. I've tried searching the interent, including this forum, and have tried anything that I've found on here, and I still can't get it to play.

If anyone can give me anything that may help, I'm willing to try anything. And I'll apoligise in advance for my inexperience and general thickness in computor related jargon lol . Thanks in advance!

Windows media player 9 won't open a video, it says "invalid memory access" I was able to open this video a couple nights ago, but now it won't. Does anyone know how I might fix this problem?

Thanks so much

A:Windows media player 9 won't play video HELP!

I'm not completly sure what the problem is, but I'd try a few things, first, go into the options screen (in skin mode, right click by the play button) and then in options choose file types. Uncheck and re-check one or two, make sure that the file type of the movie you want to play is selected and click Apply. If that doesn't help, and you haven't tried restarting the computer, restart the computer...lastly, you can try re-installing Media player.

Is there some other codec (that's free) that I can get that make the video play normal?

You could try getting the xvid codec, alternatively give VLC media player a try (http://www.videolan.org).

There is a little small icon at the bottom of the media player,(next to the volume control). If you click this icon, your sound might turn on (This is the icon for mute ONLY on windows media player). Once you click this the sound for windows media player might work again.

Hello! Out of the blue this past spring my Windows Media player stopped playing streaming video (it says "Ready" so I click on the play button and nothing happens. Whereupon I click it again and again as I get angrier and angrier ) So I did a system restore to the earliest date possible and then it started working again...for about a day or two. So then I would do a system restore again. Finally even that stopped working and I gave up. I tried downloading the latest version of Windows Media (11) but that made no difference. On a tip from another forum I checked "use high quality mode" under video acceleration. Then, this past Saturday, it started inexplicably working again. I was ecstatic until today, when, yup, back to non-working. Why????!!!!!
Thanks so much in advance for whatever help you can provide - I'm pretty computer clueless; I had never even heard of system restore until I started scouring the internet looking for possible solutions.

A:Cannot play streaming video on Windows Media Player

Hello and Welcome to TSG Gaby

Try this:

• Make sure that the Internet Wizard or Network Connection Wizard has been run on the system. If it has not been, run either wizard:
1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Communications.
2. Click New Connection Wizard.
3. Follow the instructions and complete the wizard.

I may be brain dead but I can't open any files with Windows Media Player 11. When trying to open a file with WMP11 or trying to play an audio CD, I get an error message "WMP encountered a problem " . When I go to web for more info, the error code C00D11B1 is reported with some resolutions suggested. I believe I have tried all these possible solutions. Eg, I have validated my copy of XP Home Edition as required, Windows' updates are current on my system, hardware manager doesn't see a problem, etc.I can play CDs and .wav files with "itunes" so I know my sound system is working. I was even able to rip tracks from a CD with WMP11 and then add them to itunes library and play them back with itunes so some of WMP11 functions are working. The "burn" function of WMP11 didn't appear to work though.I tried to uninstall/roll back to WPM10 in Control Panel but was prohibited from doing this. When I uninstall WPM11, the system indicates roll back is complete but WPM11 remains as the program. Tried to download WPM10 but this was stopped by the system from completing this. I don't have any restore points with WPM10 so I can't restore to an earlier time. I need some help here, please. Thanks, Robiwebbie

When I double-click a YouTube video I converted to MP3, it just opens and the screen is grey and nothing is happening. What should I do?

A:Windows Media Player won't play any new MP3 files

You can convert a Flash video (which Youtube videos are) to MP4 but you can only export sound to MP3.

Play the video, but run this program to record the sound. It can save it as mp3. I don't know if it can save files as WMA, though.

BOY! This problem sounds familiar. Now if I can get my old brain to remember the fix........

What version of DirectX are you running?

I think the fix is loading the very latest DirectX (NOT 10 unless you're running Vista).

Did you reload the Codex options for MP 11? It may be you are still running an earlier Codex that is not compatible with MP 11.

How do you play a different audio track for a video file in Windows Media Player 11

A:Play differnt audio tracks for video media player

I don't think WMP can handle multiple audio tracks. (I think by default it plays them both at the same time - at least in my experience).
Use Media Player Classic (freeware and very tidy - unzip on your desktop, and just run the file - no install, no junk). After you open your video, click on play, audio, and select the audio track you want to hear.

For the past several months, I've been having problems getting audio and video files to start playing, i.e. WMV, MP3, FLAC, MPEG, WAV, AVI, etc. The issue isn't isolated to Windows Media Player, although that is the player I use most often.

Here's what happens:
1) I Navigate to my media files via Windows Explorer.
2) Double click the file or select multiple files and right click "Play in Windows Media Player".
3) WMP will open but that is it. The blue circle will spin forever and the audio or video will never play.

My temporary solution:
1) Reboot the computer
1) Force close WMP by clicking the "X" to close the program.
2) Go into Task Manager and kill the app even though I just closed it via clicking "X".
3) Re-open WMP by clicking the WMP launch icon, go into Tools / Options / Privacy / and click 'Clear History' and 'Clear Caches'.
4) Close WMP and then go back to Windows explorer and re-click on the desired file I want to play.

WMP will work fine until I either press stop and then play again on the same file or if I click on a different file in Windows Explorer.

I've tried other media players and I get the same result. The media program will open but the file never plays. The problem occurs regardless if I select the file to be played from Windows Explorer or from the media player?s file / open command.

Starting about two weeks ago, I have had a real problem with my Windows Media Player. When I try to open a video file (.asf, .avi., mpg., .wmv, etc.) the Windows Media Player opens with the "Opening..." status, but the video never plays. When I click STOP, the status changes to "Aborting...", but it never finishes stopping. Then if I try to close the window, I get the computer beep and the window cannot be closed. When I try CTRL+ALT+DEL End Task, it doesn't close the Windows Media Player and my computer freezes. If I try CTRL+ALT+DEL again, I get the blue screen "System is busy" message and my computer is frozen, forcing a restart.

This also happens with Streaming Windows media. Also, when I try to open a Quicktime .mov file, the Quicktime player does not open leading me to wonder if it has anything to do with video processing. I can't get any video to work on my computer now.

Does this have to do with codecs, my video card, or something else? Does this sound familiar? Has this happened to anyone else? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Anyone.

Downloaded WMP 11. It installed fine. But when I go to sites, such as lordoftv.com, that use an embedded version of the player to stream video, I get nothing. No error message, just a screen with the Windows Media Player logo on it. I can click on it, right-click on it, no error messages, just nothing happens!

Tested some of the single-stream sites - lordoftv.com is a multi stream site with 1000 plus stations - with VLC player and they work fine. Thing is, with VLC you can only use single streaming sites, you can't make it work on multiple sites like lordoftv. Which makes it a pain - every time you want to change stations you have to change sites, find the URL of the streaming page and manually enter it into the VLC player!

Please, anyone have any ideas why the sites don't like WMP 11? They didn't mind 9, my old version, but I haven't got that any more :-(

Again, I'm sorry I can't give you a helpful error message but I'm not getting any myself. Just.... nothing happening.

Yours puzzledly

When I click on any file (audio) in my Library of WMP the programme hangs. I downloaded Version 10 recently and have only noticed the problem since then. I see near the bottom it refers to "sib1.od2.com" when I highlight any file and I do not remember seeing this before - I'm not a regular user of WMP but it looks as though this is in an area where the file being selected would normally be listed.

I've run HighjackThis and the log file is reproduced below.

I have just reinstalled windows 7 64bit on my computer. Along with that I also installed Winamp, div x and real player. I shot some video with my HP Photosmart M627 digital camera. When I downloaded the movie clips(.AVI) to my computer all I get is an error saying "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file". Now I click "Web Help" and there is no answer to the problem. Now I can play the .AVI in Winamp, Real, and Div x but I only get sound. I then installed VLC Plaver and it works in there. My REAL biggest issue is that I can't use the file in Adobe After Effects as I am trying to manipulate the .AVI file and insert a special effect to the movie clip. When I use the movie clip in Adobe AE I get an error saying "After Effect warning: A problem occurred when processing OpenGL commands.". Now I turned off the Enable OpenGL in After Effect and that removed the error but I still cannot see the images in AF. How can I get the .AVI file to play correctly?

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!

My windows media player has started acting up on certain files, at first I thought it was just .flv files but it seems that some .avi file won't play either. It is odd as it will open them and I can move the time slider to different positions and it will show that frame but will not actually play them. I have tried reinstalling the K-lite code pack multiple times and have went to the "enable/disable windows features" and disabled then enabled WMP (this is the closest thing I could find to actually uninstalling then reinstalling WMP in Windows 7) to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

After reformatting my hard drive, suddenly to my great joy, I cannot play any avi files. Can someone point to the fix for this, or a particular codec that I'm supposed to download. Help appreciated. Thanks!

There doesn't seem to be any way to stream AAC files in WMP...

I've tried using the Orban plug-in, but it breaks MP4 video playback (I only get sound on MP4 videos after installing it). Although Winamp will work, I hate using it because it eventually commandeers all A/V file extensions. It also likes to phone home (I get firewall outbound alerts).

Is there another way?

Any number of media players can be used by any user.

Generally...installing any player mimics the behavior of WMP when it comes to designating itself as the primary program to be used for opening all media files...but such only happens if the user allows it to do so with tacit approval.

In any case...programs which open a given file can be changed anytime by a user on an individual file type basis...by going to Explorer view of My Computer, then clicking Tools/Folder Options/File Types...and then scrolling the list to chqnge whatever program user desires to open a given file type.

I use WMP to open .mpgs, Real Player to open .flvs, Musicmatch to open .mp3s...and I have a few other players installed. Regardless of which player opens a file, they can play in just about any of the players I have installed.

You may want to try MediaMonkey and VLC.

My problem started happening about 2 or 3 weeks ago. I went into windows media player, and I get the error message : Invalid Acces to memory location. I clicked on web help and Microsoft, suprisingly, has no answer. What is wrong with my media player?

Also I tried to download Real Player, and Musicmatch but they wont play the songs OR import them into the library. I tried to import them into the library, but it says : The File format is not supported. I dont ge tthat either because the Musicmacth help says it can play .wma files, same error messages with real player. What is wrong with ALL of these programs?

P.S. Its the free version of Real Player and Musicmatch.

Hey I use Zune and almost always use the Zune software to play my music but I also like Media Center and play music from it sometimes. So a few days ago I tried to play something on Media Center and it didn't work. I know that when you play music in Media Center on the PC it actually is using Media Player so I tried to play the same music in there and got a error with the code C00D11B1 I thought it was something with the Zune DRM since all my DRM protected music wouldn't play in Media Player, but this morning I turned on Copy protect during a rip just see if that would work, it didn't. So Media Player won't play any DRM music, anyone else have this problem and/or know of a fix?

Hey josh and welcome
Windows media player 11 tends to have this problem more than 9, or 10. there is a page here Media Player c00d11b1 | PC Error Repair that describes the problem and offers several methods of curing it. We could alway also use the system specs so that we would know what kind of hardware we are dealing with

hope this helps
